Underground construction often requires working within a very congested urban environment, including excavating shafts adjacent to highly sensitive and multistoried structures, sometimes even within such structures. Shafts adjacent to heavily loaded column footings are often required due to space constraints. Invariably, footing surcharges must be considered during the design of shaft rock reinforcement. Rockwedge stability evaluation reveals that column surcharges can greatly impact the ability to meet the desired factor of safety. Design methodologies and examples to deal with these special circumstances are presented.

More efficient classification with a single hydrocyclone through equipment and/or operating design changes does not appear possible. However, improvement in classification efficiency by increasing the sharpness index and decreasing the apparent by-passing while changing the cut size is possible through proper staging of inefficient hydrocyclones. But feasible multistaging requires achieving the necessary material balances around the units. Because of the interactions among the units, these balances require extensive iterations. The final step before commerical installation should be a laboratory demonstration, in order to define the control algorithm required to maintain stability. However, eventually a sufficient knowledge base should be developed that will permit simulation in place of laboratory testing as well as the incorporation of a feed forward strategy.

Geologically, this region is occupied by Mesozoids, a folded belt of Triassic and Jurassic sediments and volcanics. Gold mineralization is of Upper Jurassic age. Most of the stream placers formed during the Quaternary. Placer gold was first discovered in 1916. Between 1930 and 1957, mining was carried out by the "Dal'stroi," a Russian death- camp organization. At the mines, "Dal 'stroi" exterminated 5-7 million captives taken from Russia's different colonies, each prisoner extracting 1-2 kg of gold before he died. Since 1966 the mines have been worked mechanically. About 10 mining districts are now active, producing altogether 110-135 tons of gold annually.

In contrast to pyrometallurgy's 6000year history in metals production, hydrometallurgy is of relatively recent origin. The earliest reference to it was in the 16th century, with the first applications to copper in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 19th century, increased demands for pure metal resulted in the development of electrolytic refining, and early in this century electrowinning. The rapid growth in copper production in the 20th century, particularly in the United States and Chile, stimulated the development of new technology for leaching and for the recovery of copper from leach solutions. In the past 25 years, solvent extraction has become a major factor by permitting novel leaching technology that produces dilute or complex solutions. In addition, solvents other than sulfuric acid, and chemical methods for precipitating copper metal are now of increasing interest. These are trends that should grow in importance with the need to process lower grade and more complex materials. The evolution of copper hydrometallurgy is reviewed. Key factors in recent major developments are presented with details of specific operations and with trends for the future indicated. The relative importance of copper hydrometallurgy is compared with that of pyrometallurgy in the light of probable changes in ore supplies and character.

INTRODUCTION The enquiry of the Royal Commission on Health and Safety of Workers in Mines of 1976, known as the Ham Commission after its chairman, Dr. J. Ham , now president of the University of Toronto, was one of the activities surrounding the upturn in the fortunes of the Canadian uranium industry and its markets in the mid-seventies. Although the regulation and licensing of Canada's ten major mine/mill facilities employing six thousand or more uranium mines is a federal concern under the Atomic Energy Control Act, this Commission, which paid particular attention to health and safety in uranium mines, was appointed by the Province of Ontario. Further provincial enquiries in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland have been aimed at quantifying, reducing or eliminating the environmental and health impact of uranium production. This work has created a mosaic of provincial regulation in what is essentially a field of federal jurisdiction. Various organizations of the federal government related to its regulatory function in the uranium industry are outlined in Figure 1 showing the matrices of regulatory, advisory and research activities associated with the exploitation of Canadian uranium resources. A more detailed examination [ ] of the governmental (federal and provincial) activities, commissions, etc., in the Canadian uranium industry indicates a definite parallelism of effort, if not of scale between the two levels of government in the execution of their roles in occupational and environmental health and safety and is presented here to explain the complex stage onto which the Canadian Institute for Radiation Safety has just entered. The development of the Institute and its precursors together with current and planned research activities are described. BACKGROUND Traditionally and constitutionally, natural resource exploitation and its regulation is under provincial jurisdiction; however, the uranium industry has been under federal control since the Second World War when security measures necessitated the creation of the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB). Health and safety aspects, in terms of inspection, compliance and environmental monitoring are performed on behalf of the AECB by provincial labour inspectors (Saskatchewan and Ontario) and Ministries of Environment. Non-radiation health and safety matters are also enforced under the federal Canada Labour Code by provincial inspectors. In support of licensing and standard-setting functions, major research programs have been initiated and expanded at both the AECB and the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET), formerly the Mines Branch of the Federal Department of Energy, Mines and Resources). CANMET established a Mining Research Laboratory at Elliot Lake, Ontario in 1965 to conduct research and development aimed at improving production capability, providing information on the security of uranium supply and investigating the hazards of mining and their implications for the health and safety of the miners. The provincial route in assessing the costs and benefits of uranium production has attempted to be far more conclusive in nature. While some on-going studies are funded, periodic inquiries by Royal Commission have become the accepted practice. Six such inquiries have been conducted in four provinces and widely differing policies have resulted from their findings and recommendations. For example, while the government of British Columbia in the Fall of 1980 declared a seven-year moratorium on(2) uranium mining and exploration in the province, the province of Ontario's crown utility "Ontario Hydro" financed the rehabilitation of a mine/mill complex at Elliot Lake. The latter instance is not surprising considering that the final report of Ontario's "Royal Commission on Electric Power Planning",(3) concluded that nuclear energy has a continuing role to play in the expansion of Ontario Hydro.

INTRODUCTION The transportation of men, supplies, and mined material from an underground operation is the connecting link between the mine plant and the surface plant. Unless the mine is accessed by a drift or adit, some form of hoisting system is necessary for slopes or shafts. This chapter will deal with the selection of wire ropes and hoists, two of the most important consider¬ations when designing a hoisting system for an under¬ground mine. WIRE ROPES General A wire rope is designed to transmit forces longitudi¬nally along its axis. Wire rope is used in a variety of mining applications because of its flexibility, high ten¬sile strength, and dependability. Shaft hoisting ropes and principal slope haulage ropes are usually custom-¬built; however, proper rope selection for slushers, car spotters, etc. should not be overlooked. Wire ropes for shafts and slopes, since they represent the life line for the mines, should be of the very highest quality improved plow steel. This quality is necessary to deal with the conditions of loading, winding, vibration, abrasion, and corrosion. Tables I and 2 display the specifications for the typical wire ropes used for mine haulage applications. The 6 x 19-class haulage rope is used for most hoisting where abrasion is not critical. On the other hand, where abrasion is critical, such as a slope application, 6 X 7-class haulage ropes are preferred. For other mining applications, manufactur¬ers' handbooks should be consulted. Selection The selection of a wire rope for a mining situation consists of simply applying appropriate safety factors to a calculated maximum rope pull and comparing the result to the listed breaking strength of the rope under consideration. Table 3 can be used for determin¬ing the minimum factors of safety for wire ropes. To determine the maximum rope pull, the following quantities must be known: the rope weight in pounds (x), the conveyance weight in pounds (y), and the weight in pounds of the load in the conveyance (z). These values are used to calculate the load due to gravity, the load due to conveyance friction, and the load due to rope friction. When these loads are added together, as shown in Eq. 1, the maximum (static) rope pull (RPS) can be derived:

Thee Brightwater water treatment facilities, currently scheduled to be completed in 2010 and begin operating in 2011, will serve the northern part of King County, WA. The facility includes a new treatment plant and extensive conveyance system consisting of more than 21 km (13 miles) of influent and effluent conveyance tunnels and five portals. The majority of the conveyance system tunnels are mined by tunnel boring machines (TBM) and microtunnel boring machines (MTBM). Tunnel and portal construction is divided into three main contracts. The Ballinger Way receiving portal, constructed under the central tunnel contract, is the terminus for the BT-3 leg of the central contract and the BT-4 terminus of the west contract. The shaft has a 7.3-m (24-ft) finished inside diameter (ID) to accommodate removal of the central project TBM and the west contract TBM and extends to a depth of 66 m (216 ft) below grade through a complex and challenging soil profile characterized by multiple ground water tables. Vinci Grand Projects/Parsons/Frontier-Kemper Constructors (VCFK) was the joint venture team for the Ballinger Way portal. Frontier-Kemper was responsible for the shaft sinking. VCFK evaluated either slurry wall techniques or ground freezing for earth support during excavation of the portal and liner installation. The selection process took into account the vertical depth, cost, past practice, geology, water tables and a 9-m- (30-ft-) thick zone of contaminated soil at the top of the shaft. Ground freezing, which would also act as a hydraulic barrier, was deemed the better option for this project. The contract was awarded to New Jersey-based geotechnical contractor Moretrench. Typically, frozen walls, by design, key into an underlying cutoff. At the Ballinger Way portal, however, the [ ] freeze bottomed out in a substantially thick stratum consisting of predominantly clay, but with some inclusions of permeable soil that indicated significant ground water pressures. To ensure stable conditions at the bottom of the shaft, Moretrench, which also specializes in dewatering, designed and installed a perimeter array of deep wells to temporarily depressurize the permeable soils. The project is located in the northern region of the People’s Republic of China and was awarded to Impregilo, as sponsor of the Wan Long Joint Venture, in September1997. The project consists of four tunnels for a total length of 88,700 m, with an excavation diameter of about 4.9 m. The lining is made of honeycomb pre-cast segments, connected by PVC dowels and the joints are sealed with elastomeric gaskets. The geology is mainly Limestone, Dolomite and Sandstone. Karst cavities are abundant and are often in-filled with plastic red clay. This has adversely affected the TBM’s progress. Four double shield telescopic TBMs were mobilized to cope with the very tight construction schedule and, at the end of November 2000, more than 80% of the tunnel has been bored. The article analyses the TBMs’ productions in the various geological conditions and the results of different technical solutions adopted at the project.

Experts, like many of the speakers at the SME Annual Conference, are frequently called upon by lawyers to assist them in litigation. Due to the technical nature of many cases, the testimony of an expert with knowledge and experience in a particular field is necessary to help a judge or jury understand and decide certain issues. Environmental litigation is no exception. Experts routinely are called upon to offer testimony to establish the existence of contamination and its source, as well as the potential health and environmental risks associated with the contaminants. This article will briefly discuss the factors courts apply to determine whether to admit expert testimony after the recent Supreme Court decision in Daubert v. Memell Dow Pharm., Inc., 509 U.S. 579 (1993). The Court's decision in Daubert overruled a long-standing test that had based the admissibility of scientific evidence on its "general acceptance" in the field in issue. Next, the article will discuss in general terms what a party must do to "link a particular defendant's conduct to the contamination involved in order to recover from that defendant. This link, known as causation, varies depending upon the type of claim being asserted. Expert witnesses are used extensively to help establish causation. JUNK SCIENCE OR GOOD SCIENCE- HOW DOES A COURT DETERMINE WHAT TO LET IN A frequent complaint in litigation involving technical or scientific issues is that one party or another is trying to use so-called "junk science" to prove its case. While some expert testimony might be so clearly lacking in support or so "off the wall" that a court can easily determine to exclude it, other testimony, especially testimony on the "cutting edge," is much more problematic. In 1923, the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals decided the case of Frye v. United States, 293 E 1013 (1923). The Muck Valley Hydroelectric Project in Northeastern California required construction of a 3.65 meter tunnel through 6,623 meters of mixed volcanic flow deposits within a critical time frame. As Engineer and Construction Manager for the Project, Morrison-Knudsen Engineers invited bids for both Drill and Blast as well as Tunnel Boring Machine methods, selecting a contractor proposing a TBM designed and built specifically for this project which could excavate a wide variety of materials and maintain acceptable progress rates to complete the work within schedule. Tunnel lining as required included shotcrete with metal fibers and full circle concrete.

In 1973, the Subcommittee on Contracting Practices, U. S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology, National Academy of Sciences, under the able chairmanship of A. A. Mathews, Engineering Consultant, now residing at Kaunakokai, Hawaii, undertook the task of developing recommendations for improving the performance of underground construction work, reducing the costs of such work and minimizing the adverse atmosphere in which owners and contractors were performing their respective functions. The author of this paper and C. F. Palmetier, a highly qualified engineer, were thereupon appointed as staff assistants to the Subcommittee, to conduct a study of existing practices and relationships in Western Europe and in the United States, to formulate recommendations, for consideration by the Subcommittee and the participants in a future workshop, as to desirable improvements in United States contracting practices and relationships. The study, conducted during 1973 and 1974, involved personal interviews of a total of 162 owners, engineers, contractors, lawyers, and educators throughout the United States and in 7 European countries, the analysis of 178 replies to questionnaires sent to individuals and firms involved directly or indirectly in construction, and a workshop, near Napa, California, attended by 53 representatives of all segments of the construction community. The resulting report, entitled "Better Contracting for Underground Construction", was submitted by the Subcommittee to the National Academy of Sciences, which approved its publication in 1974 by the National Technical Information Service. On the east side of Washington DC, the DC Water & Sewer Authority is developing a Facility Plan for the Anacostia River CSO Control Projects, including 8 to 12 miles of CSO storage/conveyance and flood relief tunnels and associated facilities. The project includes major technical and non-technical challenges, including: completion under a Federal Consent Decree schedule; large diameter (estimated 25 to 35 ft) soft ground tunnels and shafts up to 200 ft depth; operations without use of active flow control systems; and close coordination with several major public and private construction and development projects that are being advanced in the project area.

[Agitation and transport of slurries have been investigated intensively for the past twenty years. It has been shown (1) that slurries have the properties summarized in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, and S. For a detailed exposition the reader is referred to the above reference and the bibliography, which, in turn, have extensive references and bibliographies. An interesting problem with which the senior author has been concerned with is the scab up of power requirements for slurry agitators operating in the laminar region with pseudo plastic materials. Pulps of shaly ores, after various chemical reactions in aqueous leaching systems, are often difficult to settle and filter if agitation is violent. In these cases agitation must be at a minimum, yet prevent [tling] such as in copper uranium ores. This mild agitation is on the laminar region.]

The Mount Pleasant Mines, or Mount Pleasant Joint Venture as it is presently known, is located approximately 59.5 km (37 miles) south of Fredericton, NB, Canada. Earliest indications of mineralization were found in 1954, during a regional reconnaissance geochemical stream sediment survey carried out over large parts of New Brunswick and the Gaspé Peninsula. The regional geology of New Brunswick is shown in Fig. 1. This program, sponsored by Selco Exploration Co. Ltd. of Toronto was conducted by H. Bloom, H.E. Hawkes, J.E. Riddell, and J.S. Webb. At its conclusion in 1955, 30 significant anomalous drainages were identified for follow-up evaluation. A total of 4937 sample sites were occupied. Geochemical reconnaissance using stream sediment sampling was a new technique which had only been field tested the previous year in the Gaspé and the northern coastal area of New Brunswick. Sediments collected from known mineralized drainages were found to leave a train of anomalous heavy metals from 1.6 to 9.7 km (1 to 6 miles) in length. When the exercise was extended to a reconnaissance survey, the previously unknown mineralized prospect at Nash Creek, New Brunswick, was discovered, staked, and later drilled (Hawkes and Bloom, 1956). Although it did not come into production, the discovery left little doubt as to the viability of the method and led to the Selco sponsorship of the program for the following two years.

Over 2,000 shale gas wells have been drilled in the Pittsburgh Seam longwall reserves. As longwall panels are laid out, some of these shale gas wells must be located in longwall chain pillars. With longwall mining on both sides and the constraint of chain pillar size, gas well in chain pillars are subjected to longwall-induced ground movements and stresses, which could induce deformations in gas well casings Casing deformations are associated with several factors such as overburden geology, surface topography, setback distance, and casing construction. Overburden geology is one important factor that largely determines the locations and levels of deformations in gas well casings Previous NIOSH gas well research has found that casing deformations above the coal seam horizon are smaller under deep cover than unde shallow cover and that casing deformations could occur at the coal seam horizon under deep cover. Recent mine-by cases have provided more insights into the locations and amount of longwall-induced casing deformations as well as the potential occurrence of a large casing deformation at the coal seam horizon. This paper presents three recent mine-by cases with shale gas wells in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels under different overburden depths. Casing deformations were measured by multi-finger caliper surveys and predicted with numerical modeling. With the established numerical model, the effect of overburden depth was further analyzed to investigate the potential occurrence of a large casing deformation at the coal seam horizon under deep cover. These mine-by cases not only provide a general demonstration of how overburden depths can affect longwall-induced stresses and deformations but also give a good indication about the level of casing deformations that could occur under different overburden depths. The study concludes that (1) casing deformations reduce with increase of overburden depths at the gas well; (2) a cementing alternative with production casing uncemented is an effective means to eliminate production casing deformations; and (3) large plastic casing deformation could occur in the production casing at the coat seam horizon under deep cover. The experience and knowledge gained from these mine-by cases would help longwall operators and gaza companies to take appropriate measures to minimize the influence of longwall mining in shale gas wells in chain pillars.

Tailings disposal is a significant consideration for the mining industry, with the majority of the ore processed in most mining operations ending up as tailings. Several tailings dam failure accidents have occurred during the past few years and mine tailings dam failures are occurring at relatively high rates. Tailings dam failure is disastrous with the serious damage and the loss of lives. To increase the tailings dam safety, a tailings dam monitoring and pre-alarm system (TDMPAS) based on the internet of things and cloud computing platform has been accomplished with the abilities of real-time monitoring of the saturated line, impounded water level, rain fall and the dam deformations etc. The TDMPAS has been applied in several mines in China and helped the mine engineers monitor the tailings dam safety and get warning information automatically and remotely in any kind of weather conditions. This work has been demonstrated the tailings dam monitoring and pre-alarm system (TDMPAS) is meaningful to monitor the tailings dam physical safety condition. The TDMPAS could be applied to monitor all the national tailings dams online in the future.

Sol-gel processing is rapidly becoming an important process for producing such advanced materials as high activity catalysts, fiber optics and ceramic precursors. These materials can be tailor made with properties unique to sol particles as well as the gel aggregates by controlling production of the sol, the formation of the gel, and the removal of the interstitial fluids. This paper presents colloidal and kinetic principles of sol generation and gel formation. Hydrolysis of alkoxides provides the best means of controlling sol production and electrostatic stabilization enables the formation of the most homogeneous gels. Gelation occurs by hierarchial aggregation which produces inhomogeneities much larger than the sol particles. Colloidal and kinetic principles can be applied to reduce the size of the inhomogeneities and obtain high performance transparent insulation and new ceramic composites.

INTRODUCTION The extraction of gold and silver from ores, concentrates, and various metallurgical products can be achieved by a number of hydrometallurgical techniques. The solvation properties of alkali cyanide solutions on gold and silver were recognized 200 years ago. A cyanidation process for leaching gold from its ore was patented in 1887 and 1889 by MacArthur and Forrest. The solvent action of thiosulfate on gold and silver was observed over 100 years ago. Recently, several patents have been issued for processes using ammonium thiosulfate as lixiviant for precious metals, Berezowsky, et. al (1978) and Kerley (1981). Tozawa and and coworkers also examined the dissolution of gold in ammoniacal thiosulfate solution. Thiourea leaching of gold and silver initially discussed by Plaksin and Kozhukhova in 1941 but has received only limited attention since that early work. Use of thiourea as an alternative to cyanide was the topic of several papers presented at the 1981 AIME annual meeting In Chicago, Illinois. Hiskey provided a review of the fundamental chemistry of the dissolution of gold and silver in acidic thiourea solutions. Pyper and Hendrix reported on the leaching of a finely disseminated gold ore using thiourea as a lixiviant. The review article(6) previously presented was fairly comprehensive covering Important contributions to the chemistry of thiourea and the processing of gold and silver with acidic thiourea solutions. A search of the technical literature was made to determine recent (since 1981) progress and developments in applying thiourea to the processing of gold and silver. This review reveals that Soviet and Eastern European scientists are continuing to make major contributions to our understanding of thiourea/precious metal systems.

The close-multiple coal seam is an important component of China’s coal resources and plays a key role in total coal reserves. However, the overburden movement in the mining process of close-multiple coal seams is usually extensive, which is seriously affected by overmining. It is therefore essential to study the mechanism of roof breakage, the relationship between the shield and the surrounding rock, and the mechanism of overburden movement to ensure the safe operation and the efficient exploitation of close-multiple coal seams. This work first proposes a technical route for intelligent ground control. Second, the principle of cooperative control between the shield and overburden roof is revealed, and the shield support capacity calculation method is summarized. Third, the quantitative criterion for disturbance degree of key stratum (KSDD) is proposed based on the key strata theory. Finally, several intelligent evaluation and analysis systems have been developed in terms of overburden breakage and shield support capacity, multi-information analysis of ground control, and disturbance degree of overburden. The research results may provide an essential reference for the development of intelligent ground control in the mining process of close-multiple coal seams

The Courthouse Commons Tunnel facilitates the secure transfer of inmates between the County Jail and State Courthouse across a city block in downtown San Diego, California. This shallow tunnel was excavated using the Sequential Excavation Method in soft ground. It passes under 8- and 10-story buildings with a foundation cover of 6 feet, and crosses the active San Diego Fault with a design offset displacement of 18 inches.
