Western Mining Corporation Limited owns and operates the St Ives Gold Plant located near Kambalda, approximately 90 kilometres south of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. Production commenced in March 1988 at a design capacity of approxi­mately two million tonnes per year. The plant was quickly expanded as a result of new ore discoveries in the district and has been processing ore since 1993 at the rate of three million tonnes per year. The plant has recovered over 50 tonnes of gold since the operation began, The plant was able to maintain acceptable recoveries throughout the plant expansion phases. Further gains in recovery were possible since there was still free gold in the tailings after approximately 24 hours of leaching. Testwork carried out on prospective orebodies showed that some contained considerable quantities of free visible gold, while others were seen to be semi­refractory using a conventional grind - leach circuit. Alternative treatment techniques were considered because a substantial amount of revenue was lost with the treatment of these ore bodies using conventional milling techniquies. The basis for all the investigations was to maximise the gold recovery from each orebody while minimising the effective cost per ounce of gold produced,

A geological and geophysical study was con-ducted at the area of Stylos, Hania in order to study the possible mechanisms of saltwater contamination. A new detailed geologic map in scale 1:5,000 was combined with the results of a time lapse geophysical survey using seismic and electrical methods. A fault system in the N-NE direction possibly favors the saltwater intrusion.

An oversupply of copper on world markets in the early 90' s, coupled with a decrease in demand, resulted in a "tight" market for the sale of copper concentrate. In these conditions small producers of low grade copper concentrates found it difficult to sell their products. The situation was exacerbated for those producers also having reasonable quantities of penalty elements (e.g. As, Bi). The Telfer Gold Mine bulk copper gold concentrate, produced from treating underground sulphide ore, fell into this category (i.e. 16% to 20% copper, 30% to 35% sulphur and 3500ppm to 4500ppm arsenic). The concentrate sulphide minerals are predominately chalcocite and pyrite. Although a higher grade copper concentrate was attainable a substantial decrease in gold recovery ensued. Under the prevailing market conditions a decision was made to stockpile concentrates pending either an easing of market conditions or alternatively finding an on site method for treating the concentrate to recover both the contained gold and copper.

Antoine M. Gaudin was a vigorously creative man and throughout his career an internationally respected leader of his chosen profession of mineral engineering. To his professional colleagues and clients and to his former students he was both "Professor Gaudin," their wise, inspiring, and enthusiastic teacher, and "Tony," their warm and beloved personal friend. Thus, his teachings and his unique inquisitive-creative approach to problems live on and grow in the accomplishments of his students. Antoine Gaudin was born at the turn of the century in Smyrna, Turkey, where his father was general manager of a French-owned railroad. It was there that he spent his earliest years, literally in the shadow of classic marbles from diggings at the site of Aphrodesias, which his father had rediscovered. From this, Tony developed an appreciation of the arts. He eventually surrounded himself with art treasures; he reveled in the beauties of nature, and he cherished his choice collection of rhododendron and azaleas. His artistic traits led him to take up painting when his daughter, Elinor, sought his help in blending her tints for a water color. In typical fashion he was not satisfied until he had become adept with pastels in capturing the muted tones of distant landscapes and the technical properties of light and color. Unfortunately not many paintings were produced. His paternal grandfather was Marc-Antoine Gaudin, for many years secretary of the Academie des Sciences in Paris, and a well known chemist and mineralogist whose primary interests included the synthesis of precious stones. In an autobiographical sketch written in 1939, Dr. Gaudin recalled: "As a child I saw many of the original synthetic sapphires and rubies which my father had inherited. This, coupled with my father's avocation of mining ventures and archaeology, early decided that I would become connected with the mineral industry." One can speculate that the archeological activities of his father, the mineral systhesis experiments of his grandfather, and his own early studies of mineralogy and geology formed a base from which his special talents as an experimentalist were to develop. Laboratory research under Professor Gaudin's personal guidance was often an intensive, fast- moving, and exciting experience--especially to a new graduate student. An advanced numerical model based upon the Discrete Element Method (DEM) has been developed to provide the engineer with unique detailed information to assist in the design of transfer points in large industrial conveyor systems in mining operations. This modeling technique provides a quantitative description of the bulk solids movement through the transfer point. This information consists of the velocity distribution of the bulk solids and the stresses within the bulk solids. The DEM model also gives detailed information concerning the impact forces acting on the transfer structure and the conveyor belts from the bulk solids flow.

In situ stress on the scale of a tunnel or mine may be distorted by geologic structures. The resulting variations in in situ stress have a direct bearing on the potential for mining-induced seismicity. New evidence collected from the Lucky Friday mine by US Bureau of Mines researchers, as well as a review of previous case studies, demonstrated that in situ stress variations affect the [spatial] distribution of mining-induced seismicity. Although overcore stress measurements have been useful in these studies. they are too expensive and, depending, on conditions, may be too difficult to collect. However, information on borehole and raise breakouts: deformation of mine openings: and patterns of seismicity, ground-control problems and rock-burst damage can be used to build a stress database. In conjunction with maps of mine structure and geology and models of rockmass behavior, this database can then be used to build a map of in situ stress variations. Such a map could provide a means of anticipating patterns of mining-induced seismicity and. Thus, could be the basis for planning appropriate measures to ameliorate rock-burst hazards.

Three different refractory carbonaceous gold ores from the Carlin operation in northeastern Nevada were investigated to characterize the effect of passivation treatments on the nature of the carbonaceous material. The carbonaceous material was chemically isolated from the ores and passivated residues, and examined by FTIR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and gold adsorption capacity. The main component of the carbonaceous material in these ores was found to be a naturally occurring activated carbon-type compound. Hydro-carbons were detected on rare occasions, but no evidence was seen for humic acids. Ore samples were passivated by autoclaving, or by treatment with sodium hypochlorite or gaseous chlorine. In some of the passivation tests, a new peak was observed in the IR spectra of the isolated carbonaceous material, that was due to carbonyl functionalities. However, all of the passivation treatments tested decreased preg robbing significantly. This suggested that the appearance of the carbonyl peak was due to the severity of the conditions during passivation, rather than the method used.

During 1997-2001, an EC funded project investigated the environmental consequences of the use of industrial waste and sewage sludge based artificial top soils (ATS) in rehabilitating large coalmine waste dumps in the Saar region of Germany. Both the laboratory leaching tests and field lysimeter data analysis carried out by the research partners have shown that the amount of dissolved heavy metals in the leachate was low, and generally below the regulatory limits. However, the dissolved amount of nutrients, especially mineral nitrogen, was found to be relatively high. The hydrological properties of waste rocks and ATS mixtures were established through history matching of the laboratory column tests and the field measurements. 1D column models and 3D field models were used to numerically simulate pollutant transport at the ATS rehabilitated waste dumps. This paper presents the findings of the numerical modelling research carried out for the characterisation of hydrological and pollutant transport properties of rehabilitated coalmine waste dumps in the Saar coalfield.

During slow-cooling crystallization of iron-making blast furnace slags, most rare earth elements recrystallize in an artificial "mineral" identified as calcium cerite. Scandium (Sc) and europium (Eu), however, concentrate in a sheetlike "mineral." In this investigation, the mineralogy of this sheetlike "mineral" was studied. It was identified as being in the mica group and was called a rare earth-bearing barium fluorophlogopite. One of the objectives of this study was the recovery of this "mineral." The study indicated that it can be effectively recovered from the slag by flotation using dodecylammonium acetate or a combination of dodecyl-ammonium acetate and sodium oleate as collectors.

During the first fifteen years of operation at the Syncrude facility in northern Alberta, numerous improvements have been made in the field of ore conveying. The unique nature of the material conveyed coupled with the wide range of environmental conditions encountered results in a number of unparalleled challenges. Most of the improvements have been brought about with the use of detailed field evaluation. This paper outlines some of the programs which have been run to optimise belt and system construction, and conveyor performance and utilization.

Operations research includes the application of systems analysis to mining operations, the acquisition of field data and the creation and verification of computer models of these operations. These activities result in the generation of computerized mine planning tools which have a firm base-in observational facts. The Surface Mining Laboratory of the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET), in Devon, Alberta has been engaged in operations research activities since 1982. The work includes computer simulation of truck/shovel, continuous mining equipment and dragline operations. Other examples include cooperative programs with industry (such as the demonstration and evaluation of an integrated truck management system), the development of a device to measure off-highway truck rolling resistance, and an automated remote data transmission network. The presentation outlines existing and proposed research projects of the Operations Research group.

Vibration screens are commonly used not only in classifying bulk material but also in dewatering it. The lack of a comprehensive physical theory of dewatering often leads to difficulties in the design and operation of the vibration screens. Firstly, the dewatering of bulk material will be shown, based on a physical model. Because of the oscillatory motion of the liquid in the bulk, the inertial force of the accelerated liquid and the dripping of water out of the bulk or screen must be taken into special consideration. The physical model put forward shows the effect of the various operations parameters of dewatering screens. The comparison between dewatering theory and practice will be shown by measurements using coal, limestone, etc. Dewatering measurements, which have been conducted on a vibration screen, demonstrate that different vibration frequencies and rates of acceleration lead to different residual moistures. Finally, the possibilities of improving vibration dewatering will be described.

At first glance the staid Joralemon background does not seem to equate with the life of adventure that irresistibly called me for over 70 years. But my ancestors had their adventures too. My father's family were Dutch Reformed Protestants who had energy or daring enough to come to America to escape the Catholic persecution that followed the Massacre of St. Bartholemew. The first Joralemon came from Friesland to New Amsterdam m 1636, just after Peter Stuyvesant. My father's mother's family, the Berdans, were French Huguenots who came to northern New Jersey only a little later to escape the Catholic domination in France. Some say that the first Berdan to come to America was given all the land between the Passaic and the Hacken-sack Rivers by King James. Whatever, the Berdan family settled there and was able to make a scanty living by farming and selling their produce in Manhattan. The spirit of adventure in my mother's family was just as tenuous. Gamaliel Beaman was pastor of a shipload of Puritans who came to Massachusetts in 1636. Gamaliel's descendents were peaceful farmers and some ministers in New England and later New York State. They had got all of the adventure out of their systems in the long and dangerous voyage across the Atlantic to escape religious persecution. The Joralemons and the Berdans married into families that had been in America almost as long as they had. On my father's side the Berdans, Doremus, DeGreys, Vanderbeeks, and Varicks showed by their names their Dutch or French Huguenot stock. The only one who achieved any fame was Peter Varick, who was George Washington's military secretary during the American Revolution. After this he was nine times mayor of New York and was one of the founders of Kings College, later Columbia University. He was responsible for one of my few ancestral claims to distinction. Demand for titanium minerals and pigments was nearly unchanged in 1996 compared with 1995. However, through mine expansions and process optimization by the TiO, pigment industry, the available supply of titanium minerals and pigments increased moderately. At the end of 1996, exploration, development and expansion programs were ongoing in the mining sector. But expansion projects in the pigment sector were delayed pending increased demand.

Dynatec Mining Contractors (Dynatec) entered into a contract with Barrick Goldstrike Mines (Barrick) to develop the deep gold ore reserves at the Meikle Mine north of Carlin, Nevada. The Ventilation and Production Shafts were started in early 1994 and were completed in December, 1995. The mine development and mine construction programs were completed in November, 1996. This paper describes the Meikle Mine development program.

In order to safely construct a ventilation and escape shaft through saturated overburden into an operating mine, artificial ground freezing and raise boring were combined for the first time on a project in the U.S.A. at Georgia-Pacific's Kentwood Mine in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Previous to drilling a pilot hole 206 feet deep into the mine, a 20 foot diameter cylinder of soil 140 feet deep was totally frozen. Before termination of the freezing operation, the pilot hole was reamed to 9 foot diameter and a 7 foot inside diameter hydrostatic steel liner was grouted in place.

Kidston's 14 000 t/d mine and mill complex in Queensland, Australia, started operation in January 1985. During its first 18 months of operation, the mine produced over 7000 kg (225,000 oz) of gold, making it the largest gold producer in Australia. This paper describes the planning, logistics, flowsheet, and process for the Kidston project, and some of the problems encountered during startup and the measures taken to correct these problems.

The success of the excavation of a sewage tunnel in a very extreme geological conditions, from river deposits and sandy layers to hard dolomite, and several meters below the estuary under the sea water influence, shows that the choice of a right equipment together with the use of chemical products like foam and polymers enable to dig tunnels in unexpected areas and give solution to the environmental problems. The paper describes the excavation and support process as well as the adopted solutions in every material and during the cross through the intermediate shafts, also under sea influence.

The SX-EW plant consists of three parallel trains with two extraction and two stripping stages, with the mixing chambers situated on the same side of the settlers, using a coalescing launder to direct the solution flow to the outlet weirs in the side as the mixers. In the tankfarm the loaded organic tanks will include a coalescing packed column to separate the aqueous entrainment. Organic from gunk will be recovered in a packed column, instead of a centrifuge. The EW plant utilize polymer concrete cells with permanent stainless steel cathodes with edge strips on side and bottom, without wax.
