The Sandvik DE710 diamond core drill has become one of the most popular exploration drills available. It is operated on exploration and mining projects in locations around the world. The compact nature of the DE710 allows a small footprint on site. This has proven to be a great benefit in difficult access areas where site preparation can be limited. The DE710 drill is available in a range of con-figurations to suit global operational and environ-mental demands. "It is now possible to use 3D X-ray tomography analysis for plant-site characterization of coarse particles at a sampling rate of about 3 kg/min for particles which range in size from 150 mm to 1 mm at a voxel resolution of about 150 microns. This is quite a significant advance in X-ray tomography technology and should be useful for plant-site coarse particle characterization (size, shape, composition, density, texture, grain exposure, mineral liberation) with a response time of minutes after receiving the sample. Applications in the mineral industries are discussed including the coal industry, aggregate industry, metal mining and the processing of industrial minerals. INTRODUCTION Plant-site characterization of coarse particles at coal preparation plants, crushed stone/aggregate plants, and mineral processing plants is needed to improve plant capacity, product quality, and/or process efficiency. Not much on-line coarse particle characterization is done at these plants. Some limited information regarding particle size is obtained on-line from reflected light images using systems such as the OPSA, Split, and WipFrag analyzers. Even laboratory analysis of coarse particles has been difficult because of the large amount of sample required to insure statistical significance of the results. During the past decades laboratory 3D characterization of particles from energy and mineral resources by X-ray tomography has been demonstrated and used to good advantage [1, 2]. 3D X-ray tomographic analysis had its origin in the medical services industry; it is used to provide internal images of the human body and now has also been developed for non-medical applications [3]. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram for the cone-beam geometry micro-CT system. In our case X-rays from a microfocus X-ray generator are partially attenuated by the sample (a packed bed of particles) that is made to rotate in equal steps in a full circle about a single axis of the particle sample. At each rotational position, the surviving X-ray photons are detected by a planar two-dimensional array (image intensifier) large enough to contain the shadow of the specimen. These two dimensional projection images are collected using conventional video technology. The video signal for each projection is then converted to a two-dimensional digital array by an image processing system. Finally, a three-dimensional image is reconstructed from the collected set of projection images. With the availability of automated high speed X-ray tomography [4] it now seems possible to do plant-site particle characterization at a sampling rate of about 3 kg/min for particles which range in size from 150 mm to 1 mm at a voxel resolution of about 150 microns. "The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (NIOSH-OMSHR) currently is leading an effort in the development of the next-generation self-escape apparatus as part of the research imperative directed by the MINER Act of 2006. A multifaceted contract program over the past 3 years delivered key components and base breathing modules to form the basis for developing backpack and vest-style versions of dockable self-contained (closed-circuit) self-escape respirators with hoods (CCMERs). This paper outlines the current status in developing the CCMER that incorporates a docking and switch-over valve (DSOV) for seamless transfer from one breathing device to another, and a hood with an inner mask and speech diaphragm (HMC) for ease of donning, ease of use, and communication ability. Three versions of the CCMER are being pursued, namely: the CCMER-B, which can be worn as a backpack and incorporates the features of a miner’s belt; the CCMER-V, which is worn similar to a miner’s vest and attaches to a miner’s belt; and the CCMER-C, a breathing module cached along the escape route that can be docked to the -B and -V versions. Human factors considerations are a key element in the CCMER design, as it is to be continually worn by the miner while underground, and must be readily accessible for deployment when needed. The CCMERs are designed to be capable of being certified to 42 CFR part 84 standards, including sub-part O for mine use, and to meet MSHA permissibility regulations for use in underground mines. They are sized for sufficient oxygen capacities (Cap 2 and Cap 3 as defined in sub-part O) to yield a duration that is of practical use in a mine escape scenario. INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) is leading the development of self-escape apparatuses to provide breathing gas to mining personnel operating in the event of an emergency in various capacities underground in environments containing hazardous gas components. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (also known as the MINER Act) and input from the mining community called for the need to move Self-Contained Self-Rescuer (SCSR) technology to a next-generation status. In response to this need, NIOSH’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) established a strategic plan to develop key components and devices with help from external experts knowledgeable in breathing apparatus designs. The US Navy was identified as a key expert in this field through its extensive experience in diving apparatus and life support systems, and development work commenced through Inter-Agency Agreements with OMSHR. A contracts program was also launched with industry experts specializing in this field. This paper outlines the current status in developing the Next-Generation Closed-Circuit Mine Escape Respirators (CCMERs) that could be used for surviving and escaping from a mine following an emergency that renders the mine atmosphere irrespirable."

In this study, a unique excavation system was characterized, utilizing waterjet technology as the primary tool for material removal during rehabilitation of reinforced concrete and shotcrete structural liners. Through empiric testing, this research seeks to validate the hypothesis that waterjet removal of these support systems will result in less unintended damage than conventional removal methods. The intent is to develop a viable technology that will reduce the collateral damage caused to surrounding liners during excavation, improve the adhesion between shotcrete and the substrate for longer lasting ground support, and improve overall safety for workers in underground environments. An analysis on the fracture mechanisms and operating parameters of each method was completed. Instrumented shotcrete panels were physically tested and examined through visual inspection and ground penetrating radar (GPR) to compare substrate damage according to each testing method. After testing was completed, the data strongly indicates that waterjet cutting causes less collateral damage to the surrounding intact liner and substrate when compared to that of conventional impact hammers. This research is intended to provide a scientific basis for additional applied research in the rapid excavation and repair of shotcrete support systems.

Pyrite is the most common among the group of sulfide minerals in the Earth and abundant in most geological settings. This gangue mineral in association with garnet, hematite, magnetite, and other sulfide minerals acts as an indicator mineral in the Kubi concession of the Asante Gold corporation in Ghana. X-ray diffraction (XRD), air annealing in a furnace, energydispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were applied to investigate the crystal structure, identify individual elements, permanence, transformation, and chemical/electronic properties of such pyrite. The study aims to identify individual elements and to gain an understanding of the surface reaction mechanisms, as well as the properties of precipitated pyrite particles observed during the hydrothermal formation of the ore deposit. XRD shows that pristine and annealed samples contain some hematite and quartz besides pyrite. Results from air annealing indicate that the relationship between pyrite and hematite-magnetite is controlled by temperature. EDX reveals that the sample has O and C as contaminants, while XPS in addition reveals Ba, Au, P, Al, and N. These elements are attributed to pyrite that bonds metallically or covalently to neighboring ligands/impurity minerals such as oxides, chalcogenide sulfides, as well as the gangue alteration minerals of magnetite and hematite in the pyrite sample. These findings suggest that during the hydrothermal flow regime, pyrite, pathfinder elements, and impurity minerals/metals were in contact with quartz minerals before undergoing hematite transformation, which thus becomes an indicator mineral in the Kubi gold concession.

Failures of tailings dams have been happening lately. Due to the lack of laws on particular design criteria and stability requirements related monitoring during construction and maintenance, they are thought to be more fragile than hydraulic dams. Monitoring the dam is therefore necessary to understand its current condition and guarantee its safety. The physical condition of the dam could be evaluated with the early identification of seepage. Additionally, due to their adaptability and capacity for high-resolution data collecting, UAVs are an excellent choice for efficiently covering the tailings dam site. UAVs may capture high-quality photos when equipped with a high-resolution RGB camera, thermal sensors, or multispectral sensors. When these sensors are paired with image processing and machine learning algorithms, the result is a reliable estimate of the dam condition.

The bucket elevator is probably the oldest known form of conveyor. Its history can be traced back to the days of Babylon where wicker baskets lined with a natural pitch and fastened to ropes operating over wooden sheaves turned by slaves, were used for the elevating of water into irrigation ditches. It is not unnatural for the bucket elevator to be the first in history, for even today engineers and designers recognize that well designed, correctly applied bucket elevators offer unequaled advantages over other bulk material elevating methods. The bucket elevator's vertical design saves valuable floor space. It provides flexibility of machinery layout with lowest initial capital expenditure, which is its principal advantage. While the advantages of the bucket elevator have long been recognized, there has been a tendency to lean away from its use because of high maintenance without reliability. CHAIN Belt Company found that the bucket elevator, if correctly applied, can be built to be as dependable and reliable as any other piece of machinery in today's modern processing plants. It is not difficult to understand why the bucket elevator is looked upon sometimes as a necessary evil in the material handling system. Very little has been published or written about the specific use or application of bucket elevators other than in manufacturers catalogs. Most of today's elevator application was set forth at the turn of the century by Hetzel (1). There have been many improvements made in the manufacturing techniques of elevator components, improvements in material selections, all which can be used to improve today's bucket elevator. To best understand the improvements which have taken place recently in the design and application of bucket elevators, an understanding of basic elevator principles is desirable. In general, it can be said that bucket elevators are classified into two basic types : (1) centrifugal discharge and (2) continuous. Elevators in use today are either of the centrifugal discharge type or the continuous type, or a combination of both in special applications.

Although phosphorus is a very important biogenic element, its concentration in coal is generally low. Phosphorus concentrations typically range from 0.001 % to 0.229% in raw coals of the contiguous 48 states. Some Alaskan coals in the Cook Inlet region contain horizons unusually high in phosphorus. A foot by foot analysis of deep drill core, containing 70 ft. of sub bituminous 'C' coal from the Beluga coal field, Alaska, showed certain increments contained as high as 17.03% P2O5 in the coal ash; 1.01 % P on a moisture-free coal basis. Crandallite has been identified by electron microprobe analyses as a phosphorus numeral in these coals. The authors could quantify calcium, barium, strontium and phosphorus concentrations from the coal attributable to crandallite. These high phosphorus coals provided a unique opportunity to study the association of phosphorus in coals using chemical fractionation for exchangeable cations and acid extractable elements. Since the source of high phosphorous horizons in Cook Inlet coals is attributed to volcanic ash, it is suggested that the profiles of acid extractable phosphorous concentration may be useful for coal seam correlations.

Direct Production Costs for Solar Sa 1t approximate the trucking cost for 160 Km. Operations near markets appear unusually attractive at first look. However, many desert operations have been plagued by dust storms yielding salt too high in insolubles for most uses. This paper relates the history of a successful operation in a dust storm area. Saturated brine from the solution mining of LPG storage caverns is evaporated in solar ponds yielding 99.95% sodium chloride (dry basis). Purchased energy is one-eighth that of vacuum pan operations. Production scale tests have proved it works at another desert location using a more complex brine. A new approach for refining soluble salts at ambient temperatures is demonstrated by bench scale and pilot work. Again, savings in purchased energy exceed 80%, even when temperatures are raised to reduce refining time.

The Penetrating Cone Fracture (PCF) technology 1 is a new method of rock excavation developed by Sunburst Excavation, Inc. of Denver, Colorado. PCF is a rock excavation method which employs tensile breakage mechanisms under controlled conditions to enable the continuous excavation of rock?in underground and some surface applications. The technology has developed rapidly over the last two years to the point where it is now being prepared for commercial application in the mining and civil construction industries. The initial commercial application of PCF will be undertaken at the Perseverance Nickel Mine of Western Mining Corporation Limited in Western Australia beginning in May, 1994.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has recently developed a rock mass classification system for evaluating the structural competency of bedded roof strata; the Coal Mine Roof Rating, or CMRR. When compiled with the companion Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet, which is simple to learn and use, CMRR data are a useful tool with applications to longwall gate road pillar design, safety hazard mapping, and artificial roof support analysis. This paper demonstrates these applications under actual conditions found in current U.S. mining operations.

"In his 1989 book, The New Realities, Peter F. Drucker, Clark Professor of Social Science at Claremont Graduate School, Claremont, CA, stated: “Information is data endowed with relevance and purpose. Converting data into information thus requires knowledge. And knowledge, by definition, is specialized” (p. 209).The discipline of mineral valuation is knowledge-based and requires a mineral valuer to collect, analyze and interpret data that are material to a mineral-valuation assignment. In so doing, the valuer turns the data into information (data come first, followed by information as determined by the mineral valuer) for use by the client (from whom the valuer obtained the mineral-valuation assignment) and other intended users. The valuer uses his or her experience and education (each valuer’s knowledge base) supported by a foundation built upon competency, materiality and transparency, the three pillars of mineral valuation (minerals valuation, mineral-property valuation).The International Mineral Valuation Standards Template (IMVAL Template), third edition dated May 2018, defines mineral valuation as: “The estimation of the value of a mineral property in money or monetary equivalent. The word ‘valuation’ can be used to refer to the estimated value (the valuation conclusion) or to refer to the preparation of the estimated value (the act of valuing)” (p. 14).Furthermore, the IMVAL Template clearly separates valuation from evaluation: “The template deals with valuation, which is distinct from evaluation. The distinction inherent in these defined terms is that valuation addresses the estimation of value of a mineral property, whereas evaluation addresses the broader assessment of a mineral property for an investment decision (p. 2).”This is an important difference because the minerals industry commonly makes investment decisions using feasibility studies to evaluate a proposed mineral development and production project. The purpose of such investment-decision analysis is distinctly different from valuation of a mineral property, no matter where that property lies upon the mineral explorationdevelopment- production-reclamation timeline (Fig. 1). Valuation involves terms such as market value, just compensation, fair value, etc., whereas investment-decision analysis is concerned with the economic viability of a given proposed project. Although feasibility analysis and market valuation can both use discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis as a tool, the formulation of the DCFs and their interpretation are different."

Thin seam mining presents unique challenges when management or economic conditions require significant productivity increases. These challenges are increased depending upon the presence of various external factors such as labor unions, Federal and state regulations, and market characteristics. This paper explores the turn-around situation occurring at Tanoma Mining Company (TMC), a medium-sized underground coal mining company in central Pennsylvania, USA. Using a systematic approach of improving management controls and direction, labor relations, and communications, coupled with an intensive upgrade/rebuild/replacement program for equipment and systems used at the mine, TMC has begun reversing its' cashflow position from negative to positive within two years.

Geothermal heat might become an important fuel for several reasons: (1) To substitute for other scarce and critical fuels. (2) Because it may be less costly to the user than alternate fuels. (3) Because its production may be more profitable than production of other fuels. (4) Or for a number of other more or less non-economic reasons such as convenience or because of less environmental impact. In competition with conventional and other non-conventional fuels, geothermal heat must score well on one or more of those points. This study first considers projections of energy needs in several United States economic sectors and the technical possibility of geothermal heat substituting for other fuels in those sectors. Then, reported and projected costs of energy from geothermal heat are compared with costs of other fuels to show the relative costs of fuels in several economic sectors. Relative costs are reported from a sample of real and hypothetical geothermal projects. The actual cost of energy will vary with each application and the particular circumstances of each geographic location.

The Canadian concept for nuclear fuel waste disposal is being assessed by AECL Research in a series of experiments at its Underground Research Laboratory (URL) near Lac du Bonnet. Manitoba, Canada. As pan of this research, the Mine-by Experiment has been designed to obtain information on rock mass behavior, the development of an excavation-induced damage zone and failure mechanisms around a circular bored tunnel. An iterative design approach was used to effectively reconcile the experiment objectives and construction logistics. This paper discusses the design considerations and construction methodology adopted on the project.

Locus Mining is working side-by-side with a prestigious iron ore company to evaluate the addition of Locus ESG-friendly green flotation reagents with the primary goal of improving recovery and grade. In this paper, we will focus on the cationic reverse flotation application. The most “established industry” reagents for cationic reverse flotation are amine as the collector, starch as the depressant, and in some cases frothers are also used (among them MIBC, pine oil, others). Here, we evaluate the synergies of different classes of eco-friendly biosurfactants and industry-standard reagents during the cationic reverse flotation method. Exploratory research was done first with an analog sample under different pHs, eight different biosurfactants with starch and no-starch, and a customized DOE was used to perform 145 microflotation tests. The results show Separation Efficiency from 20% (baseline) to 50% (biosurfactant), and Selectivity from 3.27 (baseline) to 5.67 (biosurfactant). Optimized result conditions were then applied to the iron ore samples received from our client to perform flotation tests on a Denver Lab cell. Similar results were obtained by improving Separation Efficiency and Selectivity, which corroborate with the previous work.

Abstract. The shaft was drilled on U.S. Government land in the Piceance Creek Basin and was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. It was drilled to 723 meters (2 371') to provide access to rich deposits of oil shale, nahcolite and dawsonite for geotechnical test work and environmental mining research. Rotary drilling and dual string, reverse-air, jet-assist circulation methods were used. Drilling required 8 months. Site preparation, running and cementing the casing required another 4 months. A 2.44-meter (96-inch) ID steel welded casing, 5.1 cm (2 inches) thick was installed and 2 700 tonnes (63 000 sacks) of cement were slurried and pumped into the annulus.

Our industry is in trouble. Real trouble. It has never been an easy, secure business. But to-day it is engulfed in revolutionary currents. No longer can there be reliance upon the checks and balances of market forces. Supply and demand largely dictated the economics of business enterprise in simpler days. To-day politics, in particular nationalism become increasingly dominant. And as governments expand and put out tentacles of interference in the direction of the mining industry, far too little understanding is evidenced as to how that industry works. Then there is something which is relatively new -stagflation. As the prices of minerals falls, the capital investment required for new extractive facilities soars at rates which far outdistance those which are cited by governments to indicate the magnitude of inflation. To illustrate; 1) In 1971 it was calculated that $355 million would be required to bring the Cuajone property in Peru into production. Five years later that stage was reached at a cost of $680 million. 2) With the Caridad mine in Mexico, estimated capital investment doubled between 1971 and 1976. 3) The requirements calculated for Cerro Colorado in Panama have risen in two years from $560 to $800. 4) The budget of $240 million for Sar Chesmeh in Iran in 1971 had become $500 million by 1976.

The Homestake-New Mexico Partners consist of Homestake Mining Company of Lead, South Dakota; Rio de Ore Uranium Mines, Inc; United Western Minerals Company; White, Weld and Company; J.H. Whitney; San Jacinto Petroleum Corporation; and Clyde Osborn, Homestake Mining Company is the general partner, the others are limited partners. The Rio de Ore Uranium Mines, Inc. has. a mine in the Ambrosia Lake area; this was the first mine to go into production in this area. The United Western Minerals Company also has a mine in the Ambrosia Lake which is operated as a "farm out" from the San Jacinto Petroleum Corporation. These mines are the principal sources of ore for the mill. This group was the first to obtain a contract with AEC to make uranium concentrate from Ambrosia Lake ores and the first to have a mill in operation specifically for these ores. With Clyde Osborn as the sparkplug and co-ordinator holding the ore suppliers of, this group together, a contract with AEC was agreed on as to its essential points by mid-summer, 1956, At that time, there was no general partner and no financing, so me formal contract could be signed. By December, 1956 when the contract was signed and the present partnership officially formed, much of the basic engineering was done and purchasing of main elements of the mill waited on the formalizing of agreements, at the specifications and sizes agreed on previously. Ground for the mill was broken in April, 1957. The sampling plant went into operation in October and ore was first fed to the ball mills on February 5, 1958, ten months after construction actually started. Filling of the circuit with sodium carbonate bicarbonate solution had begun a week before that.
