A century of experience with mechanical excavation machines is beginning to pay dividends to the mining industry. Mining is moving from mechanical excavators to mechanical miners. These mechanical mining systems are poised to make a significant impact on hard-rock mining, both underground and surface. Mechanical mining machines have had a long and successful career in coal and evaporites ("soft-rock") mining. Unlike most mechanical hard-rock mining, these systems actually mine ore. For example, the most productive underground method has been, arguably, longwall mining. Mechanical excavation machines are mostly used in civil tunneling or in driving mine openings such as vent shafts. Civil tunneling is a notable mechanical excavation success. Even with its high capital cost, a tunnel boring machine (TBM) can drive kilometers (miles) of tunnel at very low cost. In hard-rock mining, mechanical excavators bore tunnels, raises and shaft openings in the mine, but rarely mine ore. Like the soft-rock miners, their contribution to mining is important and their development must continue. Generally, they are used as excavators not miners. Current trends guarantee development of true general-purpose hard rock mechanical mining machines. Mechanical miners will become a complete mining system and will determine the design of the mine. Mechanical methods will reward the operator with lower costs and high productivity.

Mineral flotation is effective over a relatively narrow particle size range of approximately 10 to 100 µm. If the upper particle size limit can be increased, however, a run-of-mine ore may be coarse ground, and only the middlings are ground further to achieve required grades. This will result in significant energy savings and increased throughput. In this communication, methods of increasing the upper particle size limit will be discussed on the basis of a flotation model that can predict flotation from both hydrodynamic and surface chemical parameters. An example of increasing flotation recovery by control of a chemistry parameter is given.

Introduction A prime goal in the design and operation of uranium milling waste or tailing disposal systems is to mitigate adverse effects of tailing liquid on the adjacent groundwater. Adverse effects are often defined as modifying the groundwater quality in such a manner as to have detrimental health effects on downstream users. To accomplish this goal, the following three types of systems are employed with regard to the seepage and groundwater aspects of waste disposal: Type I Systems Seepage is allowed to occur unabated from the tailing disposal facility. Detrimental radionuclides and chemical elements are prevented from causing adverse downstream effects by natural purification actions in the subgrade geologic materials and the near zone groundwater. Monitoring is required to assure the predicted natural purification is occurring. The consequences of seepage loss is minimal since the m be predicted with current investigation and analytical techniques and can be evaluated as to effectiveness during operations. Type II Systems Seepage is partially retained in a waste impoundment or leakage from a designed retention system is anticipated. Natural purification is relied on for controlling migration of detrimental radionuclides or chemical elements, or contingency planning is employed to collect and return the tailing liquid to the impoundment. Installation efforts and concern for escape of tailing liquid are greater than for Type I systems, but extra precautions to preclude all seepage are not implemented. Monitoring is required to detect leakage and/or assure the natural purification of escaping tailing fluid. The consequence for accidential excusions are moderate, and will be excessive only if massive system failure occurs. The pioneers in pressure hydrometallurgy have provided a solid foundation during the past four decades. The pressure techniques are now capable of being used to push back the frontiers in the winning of metals. Pressure hydrometallurgy has been used to meet the objectives of extracting metals; purifying metal solutions, recovering metals; and rendering waste streams acceptable for disposal to waste repositories and the environment. Some examples of each of these functions are briefly reviewed. The applicability of pressure techniques to the recovery of precious metals is discussed.

Introduction The ore deposits of the Viburnum Trend in the Southeast Missouri Lead District constitute the world's largest lead producing district. Six or seven mines currently are in production in the Viburnum Trend. The principal minerals are few in number, simple in composition, and form simple superposition and replacement textures. The economically valuable minerals in the typical lead-zinc ores of the Viburnum Trend are the sulfides, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and siegenite. The most abundant gangue minerals are dolomite, marcasite, pyrite, calcite, quartz, and dickite. Four concentrates, lead, zinc, copper, and cobalt are produced from the ores, and they contain an interesting suite of trace elements, of which silver and cadmium are recovered at the smelter and refinery.1 Emphasis is given here to the variations in directions of ore fluid flow based upon interpretations of the positions of orebodies due to the ore fluids being impeded by Precambrian basement relief and upon patterns of ore mineral/metal zoning. The Precambrian basement relief and Lamotte Formation pinchout has exerted an important control upon the specific locations of orebodies in the Southeast Missouri Lead District. The locations of some orebodies along one side of Precambrian knobs or ridges strongly suggests that they are positioned on the side from which the ore fluids flowed. Other orebodies are located in positions that suggest that they formed where the ore fluids passed around or between Precambrian knobs. Patterns of mineral and/or metal zoning have been used in many mineral districts to interpret the directions of ore fluid flow. The mineral/metal zoning pattern correlates closely with that of the mineral paragenesis. The earliest deposited minerals tend to be deposited nearest to the source, the later deposited minerals next closest to the source, and the latest deposited minerals furthest from the source. In the Southeast Missouri Lead District, it is interpreted here that the early-deposited copper-rich ores are closest to the source of the ore fluids, the subsequently-deposited zinc-rich ores are next closest to the source, and iron-rich ores are furthest from the source.

Popular concepts of resin and conventional roof bolting The conventional roof bolt with shell anchor was first introduced for coal mine entry support in the late 1940s. The general concept of a reinforcement mechanism for this type of bolt is suspension. This means the shell anchor must be anchored well inside a competent rock stratum (such as sandstone, limestone or firm shale) so the bolt suspends the underlying weaker strata. This concept has and will continue to dominate the use of conventional roof bolts. Under this concept, the conventional roof bolt is not suitable for the stratigraphic sequences in which a strong, firm stratum is not available within the economic anchorage horizons.

Introduction The disposal of mine tailings, development rock, and other unwanted refuse material underground in mines by using pneumatic conveying techniques has been undertaken in the coal industry for many years. Similar equipment has been utilized for backfilling hard rock mines and is currently being applied in a gold mine in South Africa where development rock is being stowed in the mined-out stopes to help reduce the incidence of rock outbursts. On a limited scale, pneumatic conveying has been applied for backfilling uranium mines and one particular mine in New Mexico, U.S.A., has used this technique for 8 years. Other uranium mines in this area are now considerinq the dry backfill technique to eliminate the problems associated with hydraulic fill. The need to backfill in uranium mines is primarily of importance to improve ventilation, stabilize the pillars and roof, and possibly to extract a larger percentage of the uranium ore. If this can be achieved by utilizing the tailings from the beneficiation plant and using rock from the development headings which in itself may be slightly radioactive, then a greater benefit can be derived. Backfill can be achieved with hydraulic fill methods by running slurry into the stopes and allowing the water to decant and return through the footwall development entries to sumps for pumping to the surface. However there are several disadvantages associated with this method in that water is percolating throough the mine workings; it is necessary to build bulk heads in flat lying deposits; it is difficult to fill right to the back; and the decanted water takes with it quantities of the finer sand particles which results in maintenance problems with the mine pumps. Pneumatic conveying can overcome these problems in that the voids can be completely filled with high degree of compaction, heavy bulk heads are not necessary, the development rock can be added to the pneumatic system for disposal underground so eliminating hoisting cost to the surface, and cement can be added to the wetted material. Three major types of solution chemical equilibria involving flotagents (Le. flotation reagents such as collectors, frothers and modifiers), minerals and solution play a crucial role in determining the behavior of complex flotation systems. Minerals of phosphates (apatite and francolite), tungsten (wolframite and scheelite) and associated carbonates (calcite and dolomite) are sparingly soluble in aqueous solution and form dissolved mineral species in bulk solution. Such dissolved species interact with mineral solids, often resulting in surface conversion of the minerals. In addition, they can interact with various flotagents and lead to surface or bulk precipitation and loss of selectivity in the flotation. Relevant solution equilibria of such sparingly soluble minerals and their interactions with oleic acid and structurally modified reagents were determined in this study using a multi-pronged experimental approach. Methods to manipulate and control the solution chemical equilibria and thus achieve selectivity in flotation systems are discussed.

The Grenville structural province, a 400 km-wide belt of Precambrian metamorphic rocks which crosses the province of Québec in a northeasterly direction, is the host of several wollastonite occurrences. Most of these are found in marble and calc-silicate rocks enclosed within or located near intrusive bodies. Reconnaissance and detailed mapping of such zones have helped to identify areas of interest for wollastonite exploration. The most important zone is located in the huge Lake Saint-Jean anorthosite massif in the central part of the Grenville. A recent geological mapping project has revealed the presence of wollastonite in metasedimentary faulted remnant of the roof. The main occurrence consists of diopside and wollastonite in a zone at least 3 km long and 150 m wide. Preliminary sampling suggests and average grade of 50 percent wollastonite with an aspect ratio of 151. Other wollastonite deposits occur in the western part of the Grenville, mainly north and west of Montreal, where the Morin anorthositic complex and a large syenite mass intrude the metasedimentary rocks of the Grenville Supergroup. Marble bands with up to 70 percent wollastonite occur locally at the southern margin of the complex or as an inclusion in the syenite. Significant wollastonite occurrences have recently been found in the eastern part of the Grenville. One of them is located in metamorphosed calcareous rocks which are part of the granulite facies Manicouagan metamorphic complex. A representative sample analyzed 54 percent wollastonite. Farther south, an inclusion diopside-wollastonite gneiss containing an estimated 40 percent wollastonite occurs at the margin of the Pentecôte River anorthositic complex.

The major goal of this study is to decrease iron content in wet-process phosphoric acid. Reducing the amount of post-precipitated sludge in the acid is another important objective in this investigation. In order to achieve these goals, research efforts have focused on bench scale testing of an iron-chelating reagent to remove iron from phosphoric acid produced from South Florida high-iron and -magnesium phosphate concentrate, and plant testing using freshly produced concentrated acids for reducing the post- precipitated sludge. The data obtained in the above studies suggest that the addition point of the precipitating reagent is very important, as the precipitated iron compound has higher solubility at higher P2O5 concentrations. Up to 60% Fe2O3 removal efficiency is achieved depending on the amount of the reagent, concentration of acid used, and operating conditions. The addition of precipitating reagents to freshly concentrated phosphoric acid leads to a decrease of up to 84% in sludge volume percentage depending on acid type and clarification conditions. Decreasing the volume percentage of the sludge facilitates acid handling as well as decreases the adherent water- soluble P205 leading to lower total P2O losses.

This paper presents an overview of some of the basic issues related to tunnel construction in the presence of flammable and toxic strata gases. Gas properties and possible sources are outlined for the various gases that are commonly encountered underground. Assessment of potential gas hazards prior to construction is discussed. Measures for mitigating the problem during construction are summarized. This RETC Session on Gassy Ground has been organized by the Underground Technology Research Council (UTRC), Technical Committee on Gassy Tunnels.

If an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM is operated effectively tunneling can be carried out producing negligible ground movements. Using the methods given in this paper face losses of the order of 0.5% and less are generally obtainable using an EPB. Operating the EPB TBM in this manner reduces the requirement for the building protection measures used to protect surface structures. This can result in a considerable cost saving for the construction of a tunnel under built up areas. This paper to give guidance on the causes of ground movements around a TBM and the methods of running an EPB TBM that will minimize those movements. Details of how this was successfully done during the construction of the Bangkok Metro are given. A novel special magnetic separator was developed based on the special properties of precious metal-bearing alloy in highgrade nickel matte. The recovery of Au, Pt, and Pd was 77.79%, 84.79%, and 81.79% respectively at optimum operation conditions of magnetic separator feed of 2.5t/h, pulp density of 45%, and flush water of 1.5t/h, and the recovery significantly improved comparing with normal magnetic separator. Magnetic field simulation of the special magnetic separator indicates that magnetic intensity of 0.6 T can be generated on the surface of magnetic drum, which can strengthen the recovery of heavy alloy that contains precious metals. The alternate strong and weak magnetic field can also make magnetic particles rolling on the surface of drum, which will reduce the generation of magnetic agglomeration to a large extent and decrease the content of impurities in magnetic concentrate.

The importance of factoring mining dilution into the estimation of ore reserves in an open pit mine is discussed. An example that relates the issue of mining dilution to the size of the smallest volumes that can be mined selectively is given. The relationship between the size of the selective mining units (SMUs) and the variance of their average grade is presented. The concept of variance reduction and its use in factoring mining dilution into geostatistical ore reserve estimation is described. An approach to estimate a variance reduction factor by way of conditional simulation is introduced.

Numerous fatal/nonfatal accidents involving underground workers struck by powered machinery occur yearly, with continuous miners and roof bolters involved in the majority of these accidents. In an attempt to reduce these accidents, researchers at the the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted studies of operator interactions with the motions of continuous mining machines and roof bolter boom arms. These operators generally perform their tasks in close proximity to the equipment in confined workspaces, often employing awkward postures. Since experiments with human subjects using the actual equipment were not feasible due to safety concerns, researchers opted to conduct controlled experiments in laboratory settings. Utilizing motion capture technologies and computer simulations, the studies collected data on equipment and operator movement in a range of seam heights and working postures. This article details the results of these studies to examine operating speeds based on usage and seam height.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Henderson mine utilizes a highly mechanized, continuous panel-caving system to extract ore from a deep, massive, molybdenum deposit. The mine site, lo¬cated 80.5 km (50 miles) west of Denver, is situated at 3170 m (10,400 ft) above sea level in a steep valley on the eastern side of the Continental Divide. The mill site, located on the western side of the divide, is linked to the mine via a 15.5-km (9.6-mile) railroad tunnel. Mine production is scheduled to reach 27 215 t/ d (30,000 stpd) from the uppermost production level. This pro¬duction rate will have been reached within the four years following an intensive ten-year preproduction development program. A second production level, due to come on stream in later years, will expand production capabilities to 31 751 t/d (35,000 stpd). The mine, which employs approximately 2000, has blocked-out ore reserves of 220 Mt (242 million st) at an average grade of 0.42% MoS2. Geology The Henderson deposit is composed of two partially overlapping ore bodies that lie 1080 m (3600 ft) beneath the peak of Red Mountain. The ore bodies are entirely within a Tertiary rhyolite porphyry intrusive complex that has intruded Precambrian granite. The de¬posit is elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 670 x 910 m (2200 x 3000 ft). In section it is arcuate with an average thickness of 185 m (600 ft). The top of the deposit is at an elevation of 2610 m (8700 ft) while the lower limits range from 2340 m (7800 ft) on the west to below 2100 m (7000 ft) on the east. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore bodies and consists of molybdenite and quartz in random to subrandom, intersecting, closely spaced veinlets. Cavability RQD (rock quality designation) * values measured from Henderson drill core and compared with the RQD values from the Climax and Urad block-cave mines in¬dicated that the Henderson ore would cave but with difficulty and that a high percentage of the cave ma¬terial would be blocky. Initial caving experience shows the Henderson ore caves easier and with greater frag¬mentation than was indicated by the RQD values. Pos¬sible reasons for this are: 1) The greater lithostatic load at the Henderson has a greater effect on caving and fragmentation than anticipated. 2) The relief of confining pressure due to caving action and brittleness of the rock is enhancing breakage. Mine Layout The Henderson mine layout was designed from its inception for a large-scale, rubber-tired, continuous panel-caving mining system. Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems are currently recognized as a necessary tool for the management of projects. Currently, CAD is used for TBM and conveyor setups, concrete lift design and overall constructability reviews. Typically, such CAD models exist only in 2 dimensions. The advent of more powerful computers, enhanced CAD programs and after market animation packages provides tremendous potential to the Tunneling industry. In particular, effective application of these technologies enhances cost, time and quality in field operations.

The City of Toronto's Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors (NTC) ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. 120 m of Starter tunnel and 70 m of Tail tunnel were excavated with roadheaders to help with the launch of the TBM and as part of the contract base scope work. JayDee Canada in Collaboration with Everest Equipment Co. developed an innovative approach to design and build a stand-alone Ring Machine Erector nicknamed Enterprise to erect precast segmental lining in Starter and Tail tunnels in lieu of Cast-In- Place concrete. This paper describes the design and provides feedback on the innovative procedure used to install the rings.
