A pilot plant study was conducted to evaluate the performance of column flotation in the recovery of gold from the gold/tellurides bearing sulphide ore of the Kensington deposit (Echo Bay Mines and Coeur d'Alene Mines), and to compare the performance of column flotation to conventional "mechanically agitated" flotation, Tests were conducted in a 150 mm diameter, 60 liter glass column with ground flotation feed split from a concurrently operating conventional pilot plant, thus permitting direct comparison between the two processes. During the test program, the effects of wash water rate, gas holdup, froth depth, residence time and flow bias were examined in detail. The bulk metallurgical ore sample had an average "as tested" feed grade of about 5 git gold and 1 % sulphur, with the gold occurring primarily as inclusions of montbrayite (Au2Te3) in pyrite, with minor amounts of native gold. Conventional flotation using 60 minutes residence time across four roughing stages recovered about 97% of the gold into concentrates grading about 50 g/t Au. A single stage of column flotation roughing using 25 minutes residence time matched the conventional circuit recovery of97%, but produced grades of +150 git Au.

Cerro Colorado lies on the eastern edge of the Atacama Desert in the foothills of the Andean Cordillera of northern Chile. Compañía Minera Cerro Colorado SA (CMCC) operates Cerro Colorado. CMCC, headquartered in Santiago, Chile, is wholly owned by Rio Algom Ltd., of Toronto, Ontario. Cerro Colorado is located 120 km (75 miles)east of the port city of Iquique. Access is by 30 km (19 miles) of paved highway and 70 km (43 miles) of upgraded road. The mine site is located at an altitude of 2600 m (8531 ft) on a gentle west-sloping plateau adjacent to a deep canyon (Quebrada de Parca) to the north. Temperatures are moderate, ranging from 5° to 30° C (41° to 86° F) with an average annual rainfall of 20 mm (0.8 in.). The plateau is generally covered with 20 to 30 m (65 to 100 ft) of Quatemary sand and gravel overlaying bedrock. In the immediate vicinity of the Cerro Colorado deposit, a semicircular embayment has been eroded into a steep canyon wall that cuts through the surface gravels to expose a considerable section of the underlying bedrock.

The present U.S. production of bromine is from inland brines located in Arkansas and Michigan. The most concentrated domestic brines (up to 5,000 ppm bromide) are situated in Arkansas. Less concentrated brines (about 2,500 ppm bromide) are located in Michigan. The amount of bromine sold or used in the United States came from three companies operating in Arkansas and Michigan. Arkansas, with its six plants, was the leading U.S. state in bromine production. Bromine being the leading mineral commodity valuewise produced in the state. The Michigan bromine production was a byproduct of magnesium compounds production.

A series of in situ pull test were performed on a new design friction stabilizer bolt with the objective of determining its performance characteristics. The bolt is installed while drilling, thus improving safety and significantly reducing the installation time. An optional expansion element can be inserted into the bolt to provide an end-anchorage, which further increases the bolt’s capacity. In situ tests show that the pull capacity of the 2 m long new design bolt is about 15 tons. When installed with an expansion element, the pull capacity of these bolts becomes as high as 30 tons.

The complex chemical make-up of electronic waste as well as the variability of feed material from post-consumer sources requires resilient processing systems that are able to handle a range of material without adversely effecting production. Several of the successful processes that are being operated by a number of large-scale metal producers are reviewed in this paper. This review outlines the processing path and final disposition of many of the important individual elemental components. Determining the chemical characteristics of processes is required to understand both metal recovery possibilities and controlling the fate of minor elements. The behavior of both the organic and metallic fractions of electronic waste during processing is evaluated thermodynamically and general conclusions are given. I

Slurry or slimes dispersion is a critical factor controlling the efficiency of sulfide mineral comminution and concentration operations. The PQ Corporation has conducted innovative sodium silicate-based studies to determine the effects of enhanced dispersion on whole ore grinding and flotation behaviors and on downstream separation and cleaning steps. The work has advanced the understanding of the role of pulp rheology on the optimization of commercial grinding, agitation leaching, and flotation operations. This paper reviews the role of sodium silicate as a selective wetting agent and surface charge modifier in sulfide mineral systems, and discusses the results of silicate experiments conducted on various ores of copper and molybdenum, gold, platinum-palladium, and copper zinc, all of which contain clay minerals or highly floatable gangue constituents.

The thiosulfate, effects copper of concentrations of and ammonia ou the extractlon of gold from sulfide gold concentrate have been studied. The experimental results showed that it is possible to reduce thiosulfate concentration. Above 95% of gold extraction was obtained in O. 2M thiosulfate leaching solution in two hours under the suitable conditions. Therefore, the process of washing residue was simplified, the consumption of thiosulfate and the loss of thiosulfate carried were reduced. by washing residued.

The electrochemical nature of mineral-grinding media interaction in the wet grinding of one and two sulfide mineral ores was investigated with regard to the flotation behaviors of the minerals. Two iron sulfides (pyrite and pyrrhorite) and mild steel were used to represent the sulfide minerals and the grinding media, respectively. Galvanic currents in two- and three-electrode combinations under abrasive and non abrasive conditions were correlated with the floatabilities of these minerals under corresponding conditions.

The Department of Energy is presently sponsoring the development of automated miner-bolter machines in an effort to increase production and productivity in the continuous room-and-pillar mining sections. This study is concerned with the production potential of these machines in three different mine layouts. The Underground Material Handling Simulation (UGMHS) computer model was utilized in the study. The effect of variables such as bolt installation delay, shuttle car capacity, and equipment availability on production are analyzed.

Every year thousands of people from all over the world come to Mount Parnasse, visiting Delphi, the Parnasse ski-resort and other sights in the area of Fokida, available to all ages all year round. This region of Greece, is not only gifted with natural beauty, but also with valuable underground natural wealth: inside Mount Parnasse and the adjoining Ghiona Mountain, there are rich bauxite deposits - the ore from which aluminium is made. In this magnificent part of our country, any mining activities undertaken must be adapted to coexist within such an ecologically sensitive area. This demands an enormous effort, knowledge and the use of technology. This is definitely our Company's primary objective. Our company's (Silver & Baryte Ores Mining Co. S.A.) activities in the area began in 1933, when Euripides Mavrommatis and the two Eliopoulos brothers, Elias and George, established "Bauxite Parnasse SA". Since then, ten thousand people have worked in these ore deposits, and 45 million tons of bauxite have been extracted. The full length of the underground excavations is more than 300 kilometers and 115 million cubic meters of limestone have been extracted on surface mining. In 1996, Bauxite Parnasse merged with Silver & Baryte Ores Mining Co. S.A. Now, the company exports more than 1.500.000 mt per year of bauxite to more than 15 countries around the world, offers a significant amount of job opportunities in the region, and imports valuable exchange into the country.

Newmont Mining's executive management launched an initiative in 1999 that was designed to engage the entire workforce in a continuous effort to systematically drive inefficiency out of the corporation. Built on a foundation of teams and teamwork, Gold Medal Performance (GMP) has had a significant and positive impact on the reduction of costs. At the same time, it has increased productivity, improved cash flow, and helped Newmont to further enhance health and safety programs. Currently, more than a hundred teams are working on improving line-balancing production and external communications at all levels of the corporation. The training and rigorous set of tools avail- able to and used by these teams were designed to help them improve communications, identify inefficiencies and their financial impact, develop and implement solutions, and finally, to measure the results of the process enhancement. It has been observed in some mineral processing plants that grinding circuit efficiency varies seasonally, such as in some plants which are located in the northern US and Canada and undergo large seasonal temperature changes, with the grinding circuit efficiency different between summer and winter. This indicates that the temperature of grinding circuit slurry has a noticeable effect on grinding performance. The effect has rarely been studied. To this end, an investigation to examine the effect of changing temperature on efficiency and determination of the mechanism responsible has been carried out. Plant investigations and laboratory experiments have been conducted in order to study hydrocyclones. It was demonstrated that when the pressure drop is held constant, the d50(c) size decreased approximately linearly with increasing temperature, while the shape of the reduced efficiency curve remained nearly constant. This effect was determined to be due to changes in slurry viscosity with temperature.

This paper reports the construction of an environmentally-friendly tunnel in sedimentary soft rock near a residential area. The main tunnel, which will be used as the Onmawashi-Koen (Park) Regulating Reservoir, is a large-scale tunnel with a cross sectional area of 254.0 m2 and a lengthof 577.3 m, excavated using such support as shotcrete, rockbolts and steel H-sections. Since the large main tunnel is excavated in sedimentary soft rock, it is necessary to keep the stability of the tunnel face and the crown and to prevent surface settlement. A top heading with a length of 50 m is therefore driven as a pilot tunnel to observe the ground behavior during excavation, and to obtain information on the geological conditions based on which type of support structure is determined with consideration given to the results of field measurements and numerical analyses.

Conventional clean coal technologies which consist of coarse coal cleaning by gravity methods and treatment of natural fines by flotation can only remove a portion of the pyritic sulfur and ash in the coal. Higher (+90%) pyritic sulfur rejection is attainable when coals are ground to ultrafine sizes to enhance liberation of the mineral matter and then cleaned. However, cleaning of coal at very fine sizes poses a number of unsolved problems, the chief one being the loss of cleaning efficiency. This, of course, means that liberation of pyrites does not always equal its rejection. In addition, the dewatering of fine- cleaned coal, and its handling, transportation, and acceptability to the utility industry a1 so pose considerable technical and economic problems, especially when compared to the FGD alternative. Convergence measurement across the 17.4-m (57-ft) high shaft station/loading pocket at Mt. Taylor provided continuing verification of stability and safety. Three levels of instrumentation, consisting of three lines each, were installed and monitored. The instrumentation showed that the flexible lining restrained the adjacent rock. The flexible lining consisted of pea gravel with neat cement between rock and liner plate, wooden crush blocks between liner plate and steel ring beams. The loading pocket is elliptical, 11.6 x 9.6 m (38 x 31.5 ft) inside diameter. The crush blocks were designed to allow 15 cm (6 in.) of convergence. Maximum predicted convergence was 7.0 cm (2.75 in.), and 5.7 cm (2.25 in.) was measured. Convergence measurements also demonstrated decreasing deformation with respect to elapsed time and distance from the measurement station to the temporary bottom of the shaft excavation.

Investigations of bedrock within subsided areas over abandoned coal mines in Illinois reveal very little disturbance of the bedrock. In areas that have surface subsidence of 0.3 to 1 m (1 to 3.25 ft), examination of cores from exploration drilling and investigations of the boreholes by means of closed circuit television have shown that fractures are spaced at least 0.9 to 3.6 m (3 to 12 ft) apart. They are located within a zone 6 to 15 m (20 to 50 ft) above the collapsed area in coal mines 42.6 to 112.7 m (140 to 370 ft) deep. The dip of the fractures ranges from 25° to 60°, cutting across nearly horizontal sedimentary bedding planes. The amount of fracturing found in the collapsed area decreased as the amount of soft, weak materials increased in the immediate overburden of the mine.

Sixty countries around the world mine about 5000 million tonnes of coal annually and simultaneously produce nearly 25 million tonnes (36.8 Gm3) [One tonne of methane at a temperature of 15°C and a pressure of 760 mm of mercury has a volume of 1471 cubic meters.] of methane. Many of these coal mines are very gassy and require methane drainage prior to mining as well as during mining. In spite of significant differences in the geology and reservoir properties of the coal seams, several methane drainage techniques have found universal application. The paper describes various techniques currently in use and their efficiency in recovering methane from mines. It appears that the application of state-of-the-art techniques, developed mostly in the U.S.A., can considerably increase the efficiency of methane recovery and improve the safety of mines throughout the world.

The Ferris-Haggarty underground mine was abandoned circa 1910, and portal discharge has since resulted in degradation of a trout fishery in the receiving waters of Haggarty Creek. Although tunnel discharge varies dramatically in volume throughout the year due to infiltration of snowmelt, compositionally it is a nearly constant low-TDS, pH-neutral, low-sulfate, copper-silicate dominated water. Between infiltration events, components of ARD accumulate in unsaturated, oxygenated environments within upper workings and are delivered to the main haulage level by the subsequent annual snowmelt flush. Mixing with non-ARD mine waters results in neutralization, dilution, and precipitation of amorphous copper carbonate and silicate phases. These mechanisms, combined with variations in the water balance, control the composition of the portal discharge. Understanding the chemical and hydrologic control mechanisms was critical to the design of a passive treatment system to decrease effluent copper concentrations.

The 9th Line / 16th Ave tunnels are part of a $700 million expansion of the York Durham Sewage System, north of Toronto. The 15 km of tunnels presented many challenges, including glacial and postglacial deposits, at depths up to 55 m. Due to high hydrostatic heads, the Owner specified EPB tunnelling, however, an alternate was proposed utilising rib and lagging tunnels, combined with a de-watering scheme. State of the art technology was utilised with a new Lovat TBM, incorporating PLC control, soft start water-cooled motors and a head designed to tackle the mixed ground expected. The 9th Line tunnels were completed in 2002. Subsequently the second section of tunnel along 16th Avenue has been awarded to the Joint Venture. This paper presents a case history of the soft ground tunnelling, including design elements, tunnel systems and TBM operations.

Study area is located on the NorthWestern of Yatagan-Yenikoy and placed in the units of the crystaline Menderes massif of Eagen, Turkey. Stratigraphically gneissic, migmatitic and metagranitic rocks are found at the base. Garnet schists, phyllitic rocks lie unconfirmitelly upon the basement rocks. Permian aged marbles can be observed as diferrent sized lenses within the schists. Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous aged gray colored dolomites and pure crystaline calcite bearing marbles lie upon the Permian aged schists. Neogen series, mainly composed of conglomerates, claystones, marl and limestones unconformly cover the other basement series, mentioned above. Pure calcite bearing marble occurances are found at 2 locations in the study area. These are known as Berber Quarry and Kavuk Quarry. Samples numbered as N7, N8, NA from the Berber Quarry, mineralogically composed of Calcite (97-99%)+iron oxide (1-3%) and chemically contain CaCO3 (97,98%), Fe2O3 (0.5-1%), SiO2 (0.025%) N9 and N10, sampled from the Kavuk Quarry-mineralogically composed of Calcite (94,95%)+iron oxide (2-3%)+albite-Quartz (1-2%) and chemically contain CaCO3 (92-93%), SiO2 1.49%, Fe2O3 0.42%. Especially in plastic and paint sector albite and quartz are unwilling minerals due to their hardness. Approximatelly 1/20 of the study area (87.500 km2) contains industrial calcite occurances. Moreover about 100 billion Tons geological, 1.86 billion tons runable (possible) calcite reserve calculated. It can be expected the calcite quality will be increased with depth. During the running stage of the quarries over burden removel and hand sorting processes will positive affect of the quality.
