Mercury and silver polythiocarbonate sludge that was generated from the pilot testing of optimized mercury removal from cyanidation pregnant eluate solutions prior to Merrill-Crowe recovery of gold and silver were tested for long term stability at Newmont Metallurgical Services. Sludge samples were mixed with heap leach residue to simulate disposal of the sludge in spent or active areas of the heaps and leached for twenty weeks with water and cyanide leaching solution, respectively. Leach testing results are presented as well as analysis of the sludge using scanning electron microscope techniques down to the <1000 nanometer scale.

[Full-scale laboratory experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of ventilation and water spray pressure on the potential dust capture efficiency of a ventilation system comprised of blowing ventilation and an underboon scrubber. The tests were performed for a 1.52-m (5-ft) roof height and 2.36 m-3/s (5000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume, and a 2.44-m (8-ft) roof height and 4.72 m3/s (10.000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume at three face positions of the miner. The scrubber suction rate was varied for the tests to study the effect of scrubber flow rate on capture efficiency. The airflow patterns and scrubber efficiency were determined by performing tracer gas tests. Tracer gas was released through a manifold placed in front of the rotating miner drum. The gas was sampled in a grid fashion using a real-time multi-point gas sampling system. The capture efficiency of the scrubber was evaluated based an the peak gas concentration of the gas laden air drawn through the scrubber and the amount of gas passing, through the scrubber as a fraction of the gas released at the face. The data were analyzed to yield scrubber peak concentrations, potential exposures at various operator locations and the gas removal percentage (GRP). The underboom scrubber appears to work best in the end sump position, relative to the start sump and start slab positions. The capture efficiency scrubber was higher for 2.44-m (8-ft) roof heights compared to 1.52-m (5-ft) roof heights. The data also showed that the scrubber air discharged behind the mining machine may be drawn into the face area by the action of the blowing ventilation system, resulting in recirculation.]

Mr. William. J. Montgomery in his book "Theory and Practice on Mine Ventilation stated "Ventilation is vitally important to underground mining for three reasons: First, it sweeps all workings with a plentiful supply of air and drives to the outside the smoke, gases, and contaminated air which would be injurious to the miners; second, it dilutes and renders harmless the explosive gases emitted from the strata, thus eliminating the dangerous conditions caused by the accumulation of these gases; third, it keeps the mine air as nearly as possible of the same composition as the outside air, thus giving to the miner the healthiest possible condition in which to work...." Specific methods to achieve the above basic reasons for mine ventilation were established in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Sections 303(y)(1); (y)(2), and Section 317(f)(4) of the Act, which can be broadly described as entrapment features, are controversial and debatable in the minds of many mining engineers in their intent and method for affecting, 303(y)(1) in certain cases prohibits the use of belt haulage entries as an intake for face ventilation, This is to say that air traveling in a belt entry will be placed into the returns and not used for face ventilation, 303(y)(2) limits the velocity of the air on trolley haulage entries. The regulations, as published in the Federal Register, have set this limit at 250 feet per minute unless a higher velocity is approved by the District Manager.

Coal-derived flue gases contain CO2/SO2 and these contaminants preferably have to be captured by cheap sorbents. This remediation approach is from the standpoint of addressing issues such as global warming, acid rain and development of Advanced Power Generation Systems and to realize the economic gain as well. Conventional and existing dry scrubbing technologies use regenerable sorbents which are pollutant specific and require expensive stabilizers in order to attain versatility. This paper discusses the use a novel class of sorbents prepared from the heavy metal contaminated Berkeley Pit water (Butte, Montana) by a proprietary process developed at The University of Nevada, Reno. These sorbents are activated mixed spinel ferrite (MxFe,_X04)&apos; Preliminary experimental results show that the sorbents have good desulfurization and CO2 decomposition capacities. The decomposition effectiveness of these mixed spinel ferrites was studied at 300°C and compared against the synthetic magnetite obtained from ferrous sulfate solution in our laboratory. The results indicated that the mixed spinel ferrite had good affinity for the adsorption and decomposition. The CO2 decomposition data of both sorbents fitted the first order reaction kinetics. Even though the surface area of the magnetite was higher than that of mixed spinel ferrite, the CO2 decomposition rate of the mixed spinel ferrite was estimated to be 2.5 times higher than that of magnetite under identical conditions. The carbon analysis deposited on the sample indicated that the CO2 was 100% decomposed into carbon and other carbon! hydrogen compounds by the mixed spinel ferrite whereas the conversion was 43% by the magnetite. In terms of specific adsorption of carbon, ferrite was 3-5 times more efficient than magnetite.

Extensive testing in the past ten years has shown that where a uniform natural gamma background is present in the strata bordering the seam, the thickness of the boundary coal left in place after mining can be determined by measuring the attenuation of that radiation (Nelson and Bessinger, 1989). Measurements made by the authors in underground mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, and Kentucky, and by others in Wyoming and New Mexico, have shown the presence of such a gamma background (Nelson, 1989). Natural gamma coal thickness sensors of several configurations have been tested in mines owned and operated by the Consolidation Coal Company in Pennsylvania and west Virginia (Nelson and Bessinger, 1988).

Rock bursts in the deep metal mines of the Coeur d’Alene district present an ever increasing problem in the safe and economic mining of the district’s silver, lead and zinc ores. Hecla Mining Company operates two mines in the district - the Star, a 1100-ton/day lead-zinc mine, and the Lucky Friday, a 750-ton/day silver- lead mine. Rock burst problems at both operations prompted Hecla management to make an all-out attempt to find a practical method of predicting and eventually controlling these bursts. Research by personnel from the Denver Research Center of the Bureau of Mines at ASARCO&apos;s Galena Mine indicated that a recognizable pattern of seismic activity preceded some bursts and this activity could be precisely monitored by present- day, off-the-shelf electronic devices. Using information gained by the Bureau and other sources, Hecla designed and installed a 24,- channel seismic monitoring system in the Lucky Friday mine. Installation was completed in December 1973 and after a year of successful operation, it was decided that a similar system would be installed in the Star mine. This second installation was completed in June 1975. Both systems are now operating and providing continuous information on underground seismic activity. Each monitoring system consists of a network of geophones with attendant amplifiers that are connected by shielded cable through an interfacing device to a computer. The origin of each seismic event is determined by the computer and a three-dimensional location is printed out. This information is plotted daily and is used to pinpoint rock burst prone areas and chart their relative seismic activity. This paper will review the causes and effects of rock bursts in the Coeur d&apos;Alene district, the equipment and operation of the microseismic system at the Star and Lucky Friday mines, and the results obtained to date.

The use of deep wells for waste disposal is not a new technique. The production phase of the oil industry has been using this method to dispose of unwanted oil field brine since the 1930&apos;s The adoption of this method by other branches of industry, however, to dispose of manufactured wastes is a relatively new development, but one which is finding increased use (2). Deep well waste disposal is not an ordinary technique even though it is finding relatively wide application. In fact, just the opposite is true; it is still a rather extraordinary measure. It is not now, nor is it ever likely to be a disposal method which can be assured of success before it is tried.

Large open pit mines in desert climates, such as the Phelps Dodge Morenci copper mine in Arizona, can create groundwater cones-of-depression of considerable size and :ability. The hydraulic containment provided by the groundwater depression prevents migration of process solutions into the surrounding regional aquifer. Copper leach operations that fall within the groundwater depression may not require costly lining if passive containment can be demonstrated. An approach is presented in this paper that was successfully used to demonstrate passive containment. The approach includes a combination of groundwater modeling and a water balance analysis of leaching operations failing within or immediately near the open pit.

Business development process. Throughout Cyprus Amax&apos;s early months in Russia, the company stayed focused on what was needed from a deposit for economic success. Cyprus Amax&apos;s reason for success in Russia is that all involved - its Russian partners, the workforce and expatriates - provided a focused effort that served the project as it worked through the tender process and the Russian regulations. The company developed an understanding of the regulatory process by working with solid, ethical partners. Infused into the Kubaka management structure were Russians with the knowledge to facilitate the process and a professional group of expatriates. Developing credibility and a solid rapport with the Russian mining authority was critical to the success of this venture. Identifying and gaining the trust of key Russian individuals was also critical during the early stages. Gaining their trust and building credibility was part of the process. These key Russians were brought to the United States to visit existing Cyprus Amax mines. These efforts proved valuable in building an understanding with the Russians about the kind of company Cyprus Amax is and the kind of efficient operations that it can run. This was a learning process for all parties. Fortunately, the company was dealing with intelligent and educated people.

Eruption of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs in the area of the McDermitt (Cordero) caldera began about 17.4 m.y. ago and continued for about 1.5 m.y. During this period of silicic eruptions, a circular area about 30 km in diameter collapsed to form a caldera that subsequently filled with sedimentary and volcanic rocks. 3 A total of more than 200 km of silicic rocks was erupted from the volcano. The final phase of igneous activity, about 15.5 m.y. ago, included resurgent doming and intrusion in the central part of the caldera. Three to 4 m.y. later +I2 m.y. ago), hydrothermal solutions using the northern part of the caldera ring fractures as conduits deposited cinnabar, pyrite, alunite, and other minerals in tuffaceous lake beds and volcanic rocks accumulated within the caldera. The ore-forming solutions may have been a residuum from the silicic magma or connate water or ground water heated by the still-hot resurgent magma in the central part of the caldera. The source of the mercury has not been identified. Later oxidation of the sulfide minerals and redistribution of the supergene minerals corderoite, several mercury nitro-oxychlorides, marcasite, iron, and titanium oxides in the sedimentary rocks account for most of the newly discovered ore body at Cordero.

The location and orientation of fire suppression nozzles is critical in suppressing mobile mine equipment fires. To effectively suppress such fires, optimization needs to be considered for the suppression nozzle locations and discharge angle. Detailed experiments were conducted to study the effectiveness of fire suppression agents with different nozzle configurations. A variety of fire suppression systems including dry chemical, wet chemical, dual agent (dry and wet chemical), carbon dioxide, and water mist were used. Six types of nozzle locations were studied, and their fire suppression effectiveness were compared. Results from this work highlight potential considerations when determining effective fire suppression designs.

The development of column flotation is the most significant achievement in the area of mineral processing in the last few decades. The high efficiency of column flotation allows a reduction in process time, a decrease in the number of cleaner stages and in the volume of the circulating load in the flotation circuit, and, as a result of this, an increase in consistency and reliability of operations. Unique multisectional column flotation apparatuses were developed. Such designs have a number of essential advantages as compared to monocells. A change from monocells to multisectional column allows to provide favourable conditions for separation of particles of various floatability. To attain that aim particular hydrodynamics and aeration regime is established in each section of the column, operational variables being adjusted according to the floatability of the material. Therefore in multisectional column machines the material-apparatus feedback can be established, process variables optimized depending on the characteristics of the floated materials. This concept forms the basis of column designs we have developed. For the first time column cell with alternating slurry Rows (combination of co- and counter-current flows) were developed and commercialized . Successful operation was reported of the new generation of columns with cell volumes of 10 to 80 m3 and the height of 4-6 m in copper, molybdenum, antimony, tungsten and nickel ores and coal slurry processing at different plants. Operation experience of these cells showed their considerable design and operational advantages and verified the proposed options and relationships. The new apparatus is provided with a pneumohydraulic aerator allowing to control bubble size distribution, the service life of the aerator is not less than two years. A multilevel flotation model was developed and used to work out a technique of column design and process parameters calculation. A method of the apparatus design parameters calculation based on laboratory test results (scaling up) was worked out. The method is based on flotation macro and micro-hydrodynamics simulation.

Eighteen coarse taconite tailings samples were collected in 2000-2001 from five western Mesabi Range taconite (iron ore) operations located in northern Minnesota, i.e., EVTAC, Hibbing Taconite (Hibtac), USX Minntac, Ispat Inland (Minorca), and National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC), to test their physical, geological, chemical, and mineralogical properties [Zanko, L.M., Niles, H.B., Oreskovich, J.A., 2003. Properties and aggregate potential of coarse taconite tailings from five Minnesota taconite operations, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Local Road Research Board, St. Paul, MN, Report No. 2004-06 (also as Natural Resources Research Institute technical report, NRRI/TR-2003/44)]. The goal was to assemble a body of technical data that could be used to better assess the potential of using a crushed taconite mining byproduct like coarse tailings for more widespread construction aggregate purposes, primarily in roads and high¬ways. An important part of the mineralogical assessment included X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and microscopic (polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, i.e., PLM, SEM, and TEM, respectively) evaluation of the size and shape (morphological) characteristics of potentially respirable microscopic mineral particles and fragments. Quantitative mineralogy, based on XRD analyses, showed that the dominant mineral in all samples was quartz (55-60%), followed by much smaller amounts of iron oxides, carbonates, and silicates. Specialized microscopic analyses and testing performed by the RJ Lee Group, Monroeville, PA, on both pulverized (-200 mesh, or 0.075 mm) and as-is sample composites showed that no regulated asbestos minerals or amphibole minerals were detected in the western Mesabi Range samples. A small number (26) of non-asbestos and non¬amphibole mineral cleavage fragments/mineral fibers were detected by SEM out of 1000 fields analyzed, but most were identified as min¬nesotaite and talc, silicate minerals common to the Biwabik Iron Formation. Amphibole minerals, absent in coarse tailings samples from the five western Mesabi Range taconite operations, were present in a single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample collected in 2003 for Lake County from the Cliffs Northshore operation in Silver Bay, MN. Importantly, the Superfund Method for the Determination of Releasable Asbestos in Soils and Bulk Materials [United States Environ¬mental Protection Agency (USEPA), 1997. Superfund method for the determination of releasable asbestos in soils and bulk materials, EPA 540-R-97-028, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington], as modified by Berman and Kolk [Berman, D.W., Kolk, A.J., 2000. Modified elutriator method for the determination of asbestos in soils and bulk materials, Revision 1: Submitted to the U.S. Envi¬ronmental Protection Agency, Region 8, May 23, 2000] failed to generate any protocol fibers, i.e., fibers longer than 5 µm and thinner than 0.5 µm, from either the western coarse tailings samples or the single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample. The combined findings suggest coarse tailings and other taconite mining byproducts should be treated with the same common sense safety and industrial hygiene approach practiced for all mineral-based materials that have the potential to generate respirable dust. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. INTRODUCTION Main mine fan installations at underground coal mines must be designed to comply with the requirements outlined in 30 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) Part 75. However, very little emphasis is typically placed on the aerodynamic optimization of shaft collar designs, ductwork configurations, and the selection of a fan isolation, or "closing door," system. Field testing has shown that poorly designed systems may produce large pressure losses between the shaft and fan inlet, as well as air turbulence problems which adversely impact fan efficiency and sometimes fan structural integrity. This paper analyzes each component of a surface exhaust fan system for an underground coal mine: • The shaft collar arrangement, • The 45 or 90-degree turning duct that isolates the fan motor from the return airstream, • Alternative ductwork arrangements for parallel fan installations, • The self-closing doors or dampers that are required for multiple fans, and • Horizontal and vertical evas6 arrangements on the discharge side of the fan. While discussion is limited to axial fan installations at shaft mines, most of the recommendations would also apply to centrifugal fan installations and to main mine fans for drift mines. FEDERAL REGULATIONS The mandatory safety standards for underground coal mines that apply to the installation of main mine fans are listed in 30 CFR Part 75.310. Stipulations which impact the design of the fan sys- tem arrangement are contained in paragraphs (a)(l), (a)(5), (a)(6),(d), and (1) of 75.31 0: • Each main mine fan shall be installed on the surface in an incombustible housing; • Each main mine fan shall be protected by weak walls or explosion doors in direct line with possible explosive forces; • Explosion doors or weak walls shall have a cross-sectional area at least equal to the area of the return air shaft or drift opening through which the pressure from an underground explosion would be relieved; • Each main mine fan shall be offset by at least 4.57 m (15 feet) from the nearest side of the mine or shaft opening; • Automatic closing doors shall be provided to prevent possible air reversals through the fans in mines ventilated by multiple main mine fans. The installation of main mine fans underground is prohibited by 30 CFR Part 75.310, (a)(l). Providing explosion doors or weak walls in line with a possible underground explosion and offsetting the fan 4.57 m (1 5 feet) from the edge of the shaft preclude the installation of the fan directly over the shaft. In addition, 30 CFR Part 75.507-1 specifies that all electrical equipment used in return air courses be permissible, which requires locating the fan motor outside of the airstream exhausted through the fan. To comply with the Part 75.310 regulations, explosion doors are typically located directly over the shaft as part of the shaft cover or &apos;bonnet." A sufficiently long section of ductwork placed between the shaft enclosure and fan, equipped with a 45 or 90- degree turn, enables the fan to be offset at least 4.57 m (1 5 feet) from the shaft and the motor to be isolated from the airstream. The need for the turn in the ductwork can be eliminated by driving the fan from the discharge side, instead of from the inlet side, and providing for a 90-degree bend in the evas6. For multiple main mine fan systems, self-closing doors can be located on the inlet or discharge side of the fan. FAN SYSTEM COMPONENTS A poorly designed exhaust fan arrangement will produce turbulent conditions at the fan inlet and significant pressure losses between the shaft and fan. Field tests have shown that pressure losses through inlet ductwork at some installations may constitute as much as 30 percent of the total mine head. Unfavorable flow conditions may cause a change in the operating point on the fan performance curve, resulting in reduced fan efficiency and pres- sure generation capability. In some instances, poor airflow distribution through the fan may create mechanical stresses that lead to fan blade or fan housing fatigue failures. The objective in designing an air duct arrangement for a fan system is to provide a low cost duct that will move the air from the shaft to the fan in a uniform air distribution and with minimum energy requirements. The optimum solution is a compromise between technical and economic factors. Aerodynamic design considerations for the shaft collar and cover, fan inlet ductwork for both single and parallel fans, self-closing doors, and evas6 are discussed in the sections below. Shaft Collar/Cover To prevent excessive turbulence and non-uniform air distribution through the fan, a smooth transition for the change in direction of airflow at the top of the shaft must be provided. However, the concrete lining of the shaft is abruptly terminated at the surface at many coal mine installations (see Figure I), creating a sharp 90-degree bend. Dupont has successfully incorporated a Floatex Density Separator into its wet-gravity operations for the recovery of zircon from titanium tailings. Results indicate that the Floatex achieved a zircon recovery of approximately 95% while rejecting similar amounts of quartz and other gangue minerals. Additionally, a unit capacity approaching 16 tonnes/hr/m2 was achieved. Results also show that the alumino-silicates can be separated into other product streams that will further improve process economics and minimize waste material. The improved plant feed grade provided by the Floatex has allowed for either an increase in overall plant capacity and/or final product grade. This paper will present the findings from the in-plant study.

Utilization of low-grade manganese ore adopting the carbothermic reduction roasting process is a proven method to produce high-grade manganese ore. To minimize industrial waste and protect the environment, gas cleaning plant sludge (GCPS), which is a solid waste from steel industries, was employed as a reductant to perform the reduction roasting process. The optimum conditions to carry out reduction roasting of the low-grade manganese ore were found to be: a roasting temperature of 950 °C, a residence time of 2 h, 40% GCPS as reductant, and magnetic separation at 5000 G for a manganese ore size of –10 mm. A lowgrade manganese ore comprising Mn grade 31.27% and Fe grade 19.78% having a Mn/Fe ratio of 1.58 containing a high silica content of 26.48% was used for the carbothermic reduction roasting having mineral phases of pyrolusite (MnO2) and hematite (Fe2O3) as found from XRD. The gangue minerals were separated during the magnetic separation, and the upgraded product was obtained, which reached a maximum value of TMn 49.5% with RMn 76.55% and TFe 62.19% with RFe 42.51%. In the study, activated charcoal (AC) was also taken as a reductant for comparative analysis; the experimental results revealed that GPCS performed better than that of the AC, showing potential to be used as a reductant in metallurgical industries. However, the resultedMn/Fe ratio was very low for the reduced sample; therefore, it can be used for smelting along with high-grade manganese ores as a feed.

Coal mine longwall face ventilation is an important component of the overall mine ventilation system. Increases in the production rate due to higher capacity mining equipment tend to increase methane emission rates from the coal face, which must be diluted by the face ventilation with a minimal opportunity for assistance from additional control equipment (i.e., surface boreholes). Increases in panel length, in some mines approaching 6,100 m (20,000 ft), and panel width provide additional challenges to face ventilation designs. Face ventilation can also be affected by communication with the methane-laden gob gas reservoir. Except in a two-entry system, belt air cannot be used to ventilate the face in the US, except in limited cases. This relatively recent requirement has further challenged the mining industry in maintaining adequate longwall face ventilation. To assess the effectiveness of current face ventilation practices, a face monitoring study was combined with a tracer gas test on a longwall face. The study was conducted at a US mine operating in a thick, bituminous coal seam with some self-heating tendencies. Multiple gob gas ventholes were located near the face and produced a small portion of ventilation air in their production flow. Initial results show that emission rates on the longwall face showed a very limited increase in methane concentrations from headgate to tailgate despite the occurrence of methane delays during monitoring. Increases in methane concentrations in the tailgate entry in the vicinity of the longwall face T-junction appeared to be produced primarily by gas flow from the gob, not from increased emissions from the face. Barometric pressure variations were substantial over the course of the study and varied on a diurnal basis, as is typical of many mining operations. Suggestions are forwarded for reducing longwall face methane concentrations.

This paper presents an analysis of gold production and prices over an extended period. Production patterns are provided for the world as a whole and for the five major producing countries. Gold prices as a function of interest rates, as measured by municipal bond rates, are given for the period 1947 to the present. World gold production has had a phenomenal increase since 1980, with the exception of South Africa, all major producing nations participated in this increase, even though the price of gold generally has been decreasing since the high level attained in 1980.

"The U.S. Geological Survey and Natural Resources Canada conducted a study on the net import reliance of each North American country, and the impact of North American trade on the net import reliance of 12 nonfuel mineral commodities that are associated with advanced technology products: cadmium, cobalt, gallium, germanium, graphite, indium, lithium, nickel, rare earth elements, selenium, silver and tellurium. The combined results for North America, using 2014 data, showed greatly reduced net import reliance for nearly all of the commodities evaluated, which is largely the result of pooling the resources of production and recovery in Canada and Mexico of materials that are consumed in the United States. This study highlights the mitigation of potential supply risk for critical materials that results from trade within the North American trade bloc. IntroductionMultiple metrics and definitions exist for what constitutes a critical material, but there is broad acknowledgment that a mineral commodity may be considered critical if, among other factors, its production is geographically concentrated, if it has few or no substitutes, or if the country of origin is politically unstable. Numerous governmental and independent researchers have proposed methods of investigating criticality, with differing priorities such as economic resilience or strategic military supplies (European Commission, 2014; Graedel et al., 2015; U.S. National Science and Technology Council Subcommittee on Critical and Strategic Mineral Supply Chains, 2016). While criticality really depends on who is asking the question, and despite the differing priorities, there are several commodities that are commonly found to be of concern. Originally constructed in the 1930s, the 1-mile-long Sumner Tunnel is 31 feet in diameter and carries traffic deep below Boston Harbor, connecting Boston and East Boston. This project includes both design and construction for the rehabilitation of the nearly 100-year-old tunnel. The primary work includes repairing advanced deterioration at the tunnel crown with new precast arches that will add protection and strengthening. The restoration also consists of upgrading the tunnel systems, including permanently removing 75% of the existing exhaust duct suspended over the roadway to improve the overall ventilation system capacity and performance.
