According to the Balandin's (1) "multiplet theory of catalysis", adsorption can occur only if atoms of the reactant molecules are congruent with surface atoms of the catalyst. Such a condition calls for certain definite geometrical relationships between the reactant molecules and the atoms at the surface of the catalyst. If such a match or geometrical 'fit' is not provided, the surface reaction will not take place. An appropriate analogy to this may be the lock and key theory that enzymes should fit a substrate just as a key fits a lock. Similar geometrical considerations in adsorption studies were made in connection with the flotation of minerals. Gaudin(2) and Gaudin and Preller (3) proposed that if the dimensions of collector ions are in registry with the mineral lattice, an ordered layer of adsorbed species is formed. They explained that the structural fit is one reason for good flotation of galena with xanthate. In another study, Bachmann (4) attributed the selective flotation of KC1 from NaCl with amine to the fact that the lattice parameter of the amine collector is closer to that of KC1. Schubert(5) investigated the flotation of various nonmetallic minerals with amine and pyridine, and related the dimensions of the collector ions with the anion distances of the mineral surface. He concluded that good flotation is obtained when the tolerance is within 20%. The geometrical theory has also been used by Groszek (6) to explain the preferential adsorption of n-paraffin onto the basal plane of graphite. The geometrical theory has thus been found useful in explaining adsorptive properties of an adsorbate relative to the substrate structure. The purpose of the present work is to examine the possibilities of a geometrical fit between sodium dodecyl sulfate and Cu(OH)2 surface, and to construct a crystallographic model of the surface compound.

INTRODUCTION A shuttle car is a self-propelled rubber-tired haul¬age vehicle designed specifically for underground min¬ing, primarily in coal mines (see Figs. 1 and 2). The drive mechanism is located on the sides of the vehicle, and the load is carried in the center. A chain-and-flight conveyor distributes the load when the car is being loaded by a loading machine or continuous miner and also discharges the load onto a conveyor belt or into a mine car. As the name implies, the shuttle car shuttles back and forth between the working face and the un¬loading point and is not required to turn around. Shuttle cars have served as primary haulage in this country since 1940 and still perform this function in most coal mines today. TYPES OF SHUTTLE CARS Shuttle cars may be battery-powered, diesel-powered, or cable-reel electric powered. Battery-powered cars were used between 1940 and 1950, but are almost out of existence today because of their limited power. Diesel cars have been used in coal mines, but are used mostly in noncoal mines where rules and regulations are not as stringent. Also, objections by organized labor have limited the use of diesel-powered shuttle cars in coal mines. Today, the largest number of shuttle cars are cable-reel cars. Electric power is fed through a cable stored on a cable reel that may have a capacity from 152 to 244 m (500 to 800 ft), depending upon the size of the cable and the cable reel (see Table 1). This, of course, limits the travel of a shuttle car. However, time studies have shown that for the most efficient haulage cycle, the length of haulage should not exceed 91 m (300 ft). As haulage distance increases, the waiting time for the loader or miner becomes longer, and haul¬age efficiency suffers. Cable-reel cars are manufactured in standard hand and opposite standard hand models. A standard car has the operator's control on the left front side and the opposite standard car has the opera¬tor's controls on the right front. Generally a loader or miner operates with two shuttle cars, one of each type. This allows the trailing cable to lie on either side of the entry and prevents the cables from fouling each other. Shuttle cars are designed to operate with either dc or ac power. Cars using dc power are designed for 250-v supply and ac cars are designed for either 440, 550, or 950 v, three-phase voltage. Most coal mines that are relatively level can use dc cars where dynamic brak¬ing is not required. For mines having steep grades (in excess of 15%) ac cars are used because ac traction motors have inherent dynamic braking and are safer when tramming downgrade. A recent innovation in shuttle car design in the last five years has been the introduction of an ac/dc car. This design utilizes ac input power through the cable, and the power is rectified on the car to 250-v do for traction motors. The pump motor and conveyor motor are powered by ac voltage. The main advantage of this design is efficiency-a much smaller cable may be used and the smooth operating characteristics of the dc traction motor is obtained. This prevents shock loading on the traction drive train, which is an undesirable feature of ac traction motors. SHUTTLE CAR FEATURES Elevating Discharge Today, all shuttle cars are equipped with an elevating front conveyor that allows the shuttle car to discharge into a mine car or belt feeder without the use of ramps. Hydraulic Power System Today, all shuttle cars are equipped with an hy¬draulic power system. Operating and maintaining the heavy equipment used in open-pit mining operations is an ongoing challenge for mines. Typical operations employ a combination of shovels, wheel loaders, and haul trucks to excavate and transport the material for further processing. As this is the first point of contact for the material after blasting, it is often a bottleneck of all downstream processes, thus, equipment uptime and efficiency is crucial. Automated systems for bucket tooth monitoring, payload measurement, proximity detection, and rock fragmentation analysis will be examined. The impact of these systems on operation safety, efficiency, and reliability, in real-world scenarios will be investigated. The process of managing all the above fleet of equipment in a mine can be streamlined by connecting the equipment monitoring systems to a central server. Using the central server, the distribution of this information can be automated to ensure that the right people see the data in a timely manner, improving both proactive and reactive responses to threats to safety and productivity.

INTRODUCTION Radon-222 is an inert, radioactive gas formed by the radioactive decay of radium-226, a long-lived member of the uranium-238 decay chain. Radium is present in varying amounts in virtually all soils and, on the average, about 36,000 pCi (1330 Bq) of radon per square meter of soil diffuse into the atmosphere each day (UN 1977). Radon decays with a half-life of 3.6 days through four short-lived daughters to lead210 and it is these short-lived daughters[ [Ra A, (218Po, t, = 3.0 min) , Ra B, (214 Pb, t;, = 27 min), Ra C, (214Bi, t] = 20 min) and Ra C1 (214Po, t] = 2.5 x 10-6 min)] ]which cause the major health hazard associated with radon (Bale 1951). Atoms of these daughters, either unattached or attached to the ever-present particles in air, are deposited on the surfaces of the respiratory tract; alpha particles emitted in their decay can result in large doses to the cells of the bronchial epithelium lining the respiratory tract. These daughters will be present in air in varying relative concentrations depending on the "age" of the air (time since radon emanated into it) and on the amount of mixing of radon and radon daughter contaminated air with clean air. [The practical unit developed to quantify the amount of radon daughters in air is the Working Level (WL). This unit was historically related to the equilibrium concentration of 100 pCi (3.7 Bq) of the short-lived daughters of radon in one liter of air (cf. Holaday 1969) and is defined as any mixture of the short-lived daughters in a liter of air that have a-potential alpha energy of 1.3 x 105 Mev (2.08 x 10-5J) in their decay to lead-210. The working level month (WLM) was developed along with the WL, and was defined as an exposure to one WL for a working month (170 h). This is equivalent to 2.2 x 107 MeV•h•L-1 (3.54 x 10-3 J.h.m-3). If the average breathing rate is taken as 1.2 m3.h•1 (ICRP 1975), then one WLM is equivalent to inhalation of 4.24 mJ of potential alpha energy.] It is now generally agreed that the inhalation of radon daughters is the major potential radiation hazard in uranium mining, and contributes a substantial fraction to the natural radiation exposure of the general population due to the accumulation of radon and radon daughters from natural sources in buildings. Radon daughter concentrations in modern mines are controlled by ventilation, and by blocking off old working areas (cf. Simpson, 1959). However, before the hazard from radon daughters was recognized, considerably higher concentrations of radon daughters were present in some uranium and non-uranium mines. These high radon daughter concentrations resulted in an increase in lung cancers in the mining population, and it is these results that are our main source of information on the risk of inhaling radon daughters. HISTORICAL REVIEW Many excellent reviews of the history of understanding the health effects of inhalation of radon daughters are available (see, for example, Hueper 1942, Lorenz 1944, Sikl 1950, Stewart 1964, Holaday 1969, Lundin 1971, Cross 1979) but a brief summary of some of the highlights in this area may be of interest. [a] 1556: Agricola describes an unusual and fatal chest disease occurring among underground miners in the region of Schneeberg and Joachimsthal (Jachymov) in the Erz mountains in Central Europe. (It is of some historical interest to note that Agricola's book was translated from Latin into English by a mining engineer and his wife; the engineer later became President of the U.S.A.) [b] 1879: Haerting and Hesse indicated that the majority of deaths among Schneeberg miners were due to lung cancer; the lung cancers in these miners (who were incidentally not cigarette smokers) were observed twenty to fifty years after they began working in the mines. [c] 1896: Discovery of natural radioactivity by Becquerel, followed by discovery of radon by Dorn in 1900. [d] 1924: Ludewig and Lorenser report high concentrations (400 - 15000 pCi or 15 - 570 Bq per liter) of radon in the air in the Schneeberg mines and suggest that radon could be responsible for the high rate of lung cancer among miners. However, the reason why radon should cause lung cancer specifically was still not really understood up to twenty years later (Lorenz 1944). High concentrations of radon in the air in the Joachimsthal mines were reported by Behounek in 1927 and a high incidence of lung cancer among Joachimsthal miners (similar to that among miners at Schneeberg, which is only some 30 km distant but in a different political district) was noted at about the same time (Sikl 1930; cf. Sikl 1950). It is estimated that about half of the Joachimsthal miners died from lung cancer and about half from silicosis and tuberculosis (Sikl 1950). [e] 1930's and 1940's: Radioactive ores are deliberately mined in the U.S.A., Canada and other countries primarily as a source of radium for medical purposes and for luminescent dials; other radioactive ores are mined as a source of several non-radioactive minerals, while extensive uranium mining did not begin until the late 1940's. [f] 1940: Based on crude epidemiology and dose calculations, Evans and Goodman propose 10 pCi L-1 as a maximum permissible concentration of radon in continued human exposure. This is the first known recommended maximum permissible concentration for radon. This recommendation was adopted by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards in 1941 and reconfirmed in 1953. Many systems which are modelled mathematically result in a model where the relationships between some or all of the parameters are found to be non-linear. These systems are usually complicated further by a desire to make the system achieve multiple and often conflicting objectives or goals simultaneously. Rozwadowski (1970) developed a model to describe the total discounted net profit of a mine as a function of the amount of ore developed and of the grade of the amount of ore mined. Dynamic programming was used to determine the policy which gave the maximum net present value. In this paper it is shown that the relationships between the variables can be approximated by piecewise linear functions. This is amenable to solution by an algorithm based on the simplex algorithm of linear programming. The goals of maximizing the net present value, the total net profit and the total gold output are incorporated simultaneously into a goal programming formulation of the system. The resulting model is characterized by a large number of disconnected constraints. These are decomposed into several smaller problems and the problem solved. The solution is examined to discover the sensitivity of the system to changes in certain parameters. In particular the interaction between the three goals is analysed to determine whether there is conflict between any of the goals and, if so, what the trade-offs between the conflicting goals are.

When exploration shows a mineral deposit to be of importance, the subsequent work of defining the limits or boundaries of the ore body and preparing it for the extraction of the mineral is termed development (Young, 1946). In underground mining, development also connotes the work that is involved in opening up a deposit preparatory to stoping or productive operations. In this section, mine development is defined to include all studies and operations that will enable a sound evaluation of an explored ore body from the technical and financial standpoints. Though the ultimate objective of all mine development activities is the same, the scope and detail of these activities vary depending on the type of ore body (e.g., flat bodies, lenses and sheets, massive deposits, narrow veins, and bedded deposits), and the method of working the deposit (e.g., under- ground or surface methods or a combination of both of the methods). Therefore, the various contributions in section 3 address such topics as long-range planning, feasibility studies, and valuation for many types of ore bodies and different mining methods. This introductory review is divided into three major parts. In the first part, long-range planning aspects are briefly discussed with .an emphasis on current trends that affect mine planning. In the second part, an overview is provided of the contents in the mine development and valuation section. In the last part, remarks are made on the status, scope, and future of quantitative and computer methods in mine planning and development.

Contrary to active subsidence, which occurs concurrently with mining operations, or is completed within a few days following coal extraction, delayed subsidence may take many years to appear at the surface after coal mines are abandoned. There are two principal morphological types of delayed subsidence: troughs, which are shallow depressions, and sinks, which are steep-sided crown pits. Both types are damaging to surface structures, and a variety of methods have been introduced to deal with the problem, ranging from subsidence insurance to site restitution. In planning insurance or restitution measures, a predictive model is of value in estimating the magnitude of the problem and the size of long-term budgetary commitments. Only one model is known, which was developed for the Bureau of Mines by GAI Consultants of Monroeville (l,2,3). The GAI model is presented in qualitative terms. This report develops a formal basis for the model and tests a numerical implementation on one of the best-described study areas, Allleqheny County in Pennsylvania.

INTRODUCTION Los Angeles is one of the world's largest cities in area with a span of 70 km between its north and south limits. The population in the Los Angeles Basin exceeds 11 million people. Los Angeles is second only to New York City in density of U.S. urban population and it operates one of the largest city bus fleets in the world, 2,500 buses. After many years of planning and many consultants' reports, it is planned to initiate a 30 km (18.5 miles) starter line subway -- the "Wilshire Corridor" (Figure 1). Construction is to start in 1985. In several locations, subway routes ultimately will skirt or cross old oil fields, which may cause gassy tunneling. Of particular note are the La Brea Tar Pits, which overlie a part of the old Salt Lake oil field. Tunneling through tar sands for about 3 km will be unique for subway construction and will occur on the starter line. Experience with previous gassy tunnels in the greater Los Angeles area shows that tunnels can be completed safely if precautions are taken. Abundant ventilation is the main solution, although other precautions are discussed herein.

Throughout the history of mankind, the principal use of coal has been to produce heat through combustion. The heat is used in many ways: to warm air space for our comfort; to provide heat or energy to power industrial processes, such as cement and steel production; and to produce electricity. Because it is our nation's most abundant fossil energy fuel, coal in the late 20th century is on the threshold of becoming a significant source for synthetic liquids and gas energy fuels for this country. This is made possible by conversion processes which can change solid coal into various synthetic gases and liquids. These coal-derived fuels are nearly identical to the processed fuels and chemicals provided by natural gas and crude oils, which presently provide almost all the petrochemical feedstocks and energy fuels needed for the residential, light commercial, and transportation markets. A revolution is beginning to take place, not only in the United States, but in many other countries with a return to a coal-based energy economy. Also, new combustion and conversion technologies which are compatible with national health and environmental goals are rapidly emerging. These technologies will allow coal's use to be expanded not only in its traditional markets, but also to supply markets held by natural gas and crude oil. With the worldwide decline in natural gas and crude oil reserves, coal is being-looked upon to meet the energy demand. Because of these new coal conversion technologies, coal will no longer be only a combustion fuel, but a valuable raw material for production of a variety of clean fuels and chemicals.

Significant economic benefits can result when rock mechanics is applied within a practical framework and integrated within the other engineering functions of the mine organization. Such application and integration requires management support and understanding of rock mechanics as a practical tool to help attain high standards of safety, productivity and resource recovery. For such an approach, a long-term geotechnical program is needed in most operations to build an adequate data base and to ensure that design and ground control issues are handled in a cost-effective manner. Best usage of rock mechanics in mining occurs when management recognizes the application as a long-term investment, where time is needed to realize good returns. The need for this approach is due to the difficulty in accurately predicting ground conditions ahead of mining. The practical application of rock mechanics must follow an iterative process of design and verification based on site-specific experience to account for geologic and mining impacts. Ground conditions experienced during mining must be used to check the initial mine design and, if necessary, to provide a basis for design modification. Such a practical rock mechanics program includes comparative experience, in situ instrumentation and numerical modeling. The program begins with the geologic site investigation and continues throughout the life of the mine. It is an integral part of mine planning and operation.

Based on the mechanical essence that large-scale plastic failure zone appears in all or part of surrounding rock in soft rock roadway, the numerical simulation method is used to study the rectangular roadway in layered rock strata. It is clarified necessary conditions must be met for soft rock: firstly, the strength condition is that the maximum confining pressure is greater than the uniaxial compressive strength of rock strata. Secondly, the stress environment condition is that the ratio of maximum confining pressure to minimum confining pressure is greater than 3. Thirdly, the angle condition is that The direction of principal stress action enables the plastic zone of weak rock layers to fully develop. At the same time, the quantitative description method of soft rock is given, and the soft rock roadway is redefined. Soft rock roadway refers to the roadway that meets the strength conditions, stress environment conditions, and rock structure angle conditions under certain surrounding rock conditions and in-situ stress environment conditions. After the excavation of the roadway, a large-scale plastic failure can be formed, that is, a butterfly-shaped plastic zone is formed, and the conventional support cannot be adapted. It is difficult to support in engineering. It provides a theoretical basis and engineering analysis method for the identification of soft rock roadway, and the research results have engineering value Soft rock tunnel engineering in coal mines constitutes a vital aspect of soft rock engineering. This field broadly encompasses rock engi- neering concerning large plastic deformations, e.g., soft rock slope engineering and soft rock tunnel engineering. The intricate geological conditions encountered in soft rock tunnel engineering present a significant challenge to support, which has harmed coal production in China. China leads global raw coal production with the annual output of 4.6 billion tons. Annual tunnel excavation supporting this production spans approximately 11,000 km, with over 10% of these tunnels classified as soft rock formations. Soft rock is commonly associated with soft rock tunnels due to their prevalence in engineering projects. However, reaching a consensus on the definition of soft rock has long been an enduring challenge for scholars and engineers. Numerous definitions have been proposed, includ- ing descriptive, index, and engineering definitions. For instance, the International Society for Rock Mechanics defines soft rock based on its uniaxial compressive strength σ ranging from 0.5 to 25 MPa. China's Engineering Rock Body Standards, established in 1994 (GB 50218-94), take a qualitative and quantitative approach to classifying rocks. Rocks are categorized as hard or soft based on criteria such as hammering sound, fragmentation, water immersion effects, and weath- ering degree. Additionally, the integrity of rock bodies is assessed across five categories intact, relatively intact, soft fractured, fractured, and extremely fractured. This classification considers factors like the number and spacing of structural planes, their combination, and the types of structures. Descriptive and index-based definitions fall under the category of geological soft rocks, providing a comprehensive geological perspective on the surface features or strength characteristics. However, these definitions have limitations in engineering practice, which leads to contradic- tions. For instance, rocks with uniaxial compressive strength less than 25 MPa may not exhibit soft rock characteristics if the tunnel is shal- low with low horizontal stress levels. Conversely, rocks with compressive strength exceeding 25 MPa at sufficient depth and high horizontal stress may exhibit soft rock characteristics. Definitions originating from engineering practice have emerged after realizing the inadequacy of discussing soft rocks without considering engineering. For instance, Dong's loose circle theory defines soft rocks as rocks with a loose circle thickness exceeding 1.5 m, which chal- lenges conventional supports. This intuitive definition, widely accepted by engineering professionals, emphasizes the difficulty in supporting tunnels due to extensive damage. However, various tunnel damage poses a challenge in relying solely on the loose circle thickness of tunnels for determining soft rocks. He introduced the concept of engineering soft rocks, which are defined as rock formations exhibiting significant plastic deformations under applied engineering force. Two fundamental mechanical properties of soft rocks are identified the critical softening load and critical soft- ening depth. The Henderson Mine, a new large scale underground development, is being developed by AMAX. The mine site is located about 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado, adjacent to the east side of the Continental Divide. The mine's three access shafts are in a narrow alpine canyon at an elevation of 10,400 feet. The ore body of molybdenite is to the south of the shafts, 3,000 feet below the surface of nearby Red Mountain. The ore extends over 800 feet vertically and is about 1,700 feet by 2,200 feet horizontally. The eastern and southeastern boundaries of the deposit are still to be defined at the present time. Development mining is advancing at the mine site on a three shift, seven-day basis at the rate of about 2,000 feet per month. About twelve miles of heading have been driven at the present time, and work to sink No. 3 Shaft has started. Development mining was begun in 1967 with the sinking of No. 1 Shaft. This shaft is fully concreted, 23 feet in diameter and 2,441 feet in depth. It is the mine ventilation exhaust conduit. It is also used for development muck hoisting, stand-by mine water pumping and secondary access to the 8,035 foot level. This level is the mine exhaust ventilation level and was mined principally by conventional rail mining methods. From this one station at the 8,035 foot elevation a 5% ramp was driven to the initial production horizon at 8,100 feet with diesel rubber tired mining equipment. Subsequent mining has been entirely by mobile diesel equipment at the mine site.

"Construction of the OceanaGold Haile operation’s process plant in Kershaw, South Carolina is currently under way, with ore through the mill expected in late 2016 and commercial production expected in early 2017. The process is designed to treat 6,350 tonnes per day with minor upgrades required to achieve 8,270 tonnes per day. Plant optimization during detailed engineering, combined with a focus on de-risking the process, has resulted in numerous process changes since the initial design. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio operation, whilst identifying potential expansion opportunities. INTRODUCTION Haile Gold Mine is located in Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The last operation employed heap leaching from 1985 through 1992. Since then, the property has been closed and fully reclaimed. Romarco Minerals acquired the property in 2007, and began an exploration program that delineated 2.02Moz. of gold in reserve at an overall grade of 2.06 g/t. OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals and the Haile Operation in October of 2015. OceanaGold operates under a risk management philosophy in all aspects of operation, both corporately and at each individual business unit, and has implemented numerous process changes to eliminate or mitigate risks identified in the initial design of the processing circuit, and provided increased opportunity for optimization and expansion. This paper describes the plant optimization and de-risking, it also presents a proven commissioning strategy modelled after OceanaGold’s Didipio Operation, and identifies potential expansion opportunities. INITIAL PROCESSING CIRCUIT DESIGN An extensive metallurgical test work program was undertaken by Romarco Minerals and third party laboratories during the initial design phase of the Haile project [1]. This preliminary test work provided the technical information as a basis of plant design. The initial flow sheet for the Haile processing circuit is shown in Figure 1 (see APPENDIX). The plant is designed to process 6,350 tpd (7,000 stpd) on an annualized basis. The process begins with a jaw crusher followed by a SAG and ball mill grinding circuit to reduce particle size to P80 74 µm. A flash flotation cell treats 50% of the cyclone underflow in the ball mill circuit. Grinding circuit product is sent to a rougher flotation circuit to recover gold-bearing pyrite. The flotation concentrates from flash and rougher flotation are reground to P80 13 µm using stirred media detritors (SMD’s). The rougher flotation tail is pumped to the carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit for gold recovery. The reground concentrate is pre-aerated prior to being pumped to the CIL circuit. The CIL circuit is a hybrid circuit with eight tanks. Tank 1 leaches the pre-aerated concentrate only, and tanks 2 through 8 leach the combined flotation tailing and tank 1 discharge. The carbon strip circuit is a standard pressure Zadra system, followed by electrowinning, and refining using an induction furnace. CIL tailing passes through a cyanide recovery thickener prior cyanide destruction and then pumped to the tailing storage facility (TSF)."

[When a blast furnace has a certain defined burden and is operated under fixed conditions of blast temperature, etc., the fuel efficiency is determined by the extent to which the reducing gases can remove oxygen from the burden in the furnace stack. This is determined by two distinct factors: 1) The uniformity of gas-solid contact, and 2) The ease with which oxygen can be removed from individual pieces of burden. This latter is often called burden reducibility. Previously we reported crushing or grinding crystalline silica results in silica-based free radicals on the particulate surface which can generate hydroxyl radicals in aqueous solution (1). Now we find that freshly ground silica is more cytotoxic to and a more potent activator of alveolar macrophages than similarly sized aged silica. Since the United States Department of Labor estimates that over 1.25 million American workers may be exposed to freshly ground crystalline silica arid nearly 60,000 may be at risk of developing some degree of silica-based occupational lung disease, then this is hardly a trivial problem. Occupations of concern include workers who come in contact with silica including miners of soft and hard minerals, stone quarry workers, glass workers and even millers who stone grind flour. Acute silicosis is manifested by inflammation, alveolar lipo-proteinosis, and the rapid development of respiratory disability that depending on the dose of silica can produce chronic silicosis which takes 20 - 40 years to develop. It is demonstrated by the appearance of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions and progressive development of dyspnea(3). Certainly the free radicals produced on the surface of freshly ground crystalline silica play a most important role in producing the acute and chronic symptoms of silicosis. When respirable-size freshly- ground silica (0.1 -- 5 microns in diameter) enters the deep alveolar spaces in the lung and contacts an aqueous environment, hydroxyl radical are generated and cellular damage is bound to occur. We have found that freshly ground silica can cause lipid peroxidation and lysis of erythrocytes(1). The objective of this investigation was to further elucidate the enhanced toxicity of freshly ground versus aged silica. It can be deduced from the data that not only is freshly ground silica more cytotoxic to alveolar macrophages but it is a more potent stimulant of these phagocytes. However the mere characterization of toxicity is not entirely helpful if there is not a useful means to detoxify the cause of the damage. We have identified an aqueously soluble substance that can be used in high dilution to detoxify the SiO(•) and Si(•) type of free radicals. This is the organosilane known as Prosil 28 (R). We have found that coating of the freshly ground silica can effectively reduce its toxicity. The importance of this observation is that such a coating could be used with water cooled drills. This may partially detoxify silica at the point of generation of the free radical, i.e., the generation of the fresh silica dust itself. Such a coating could be used in great dilution 1:103 or 1:104. The coating would be long lasting, inexpensive and should be non-toxic because of the great dilution.

The Buick concentrator represents state-of-the-art technology in automated digital process control operation utilizing a centralized computer. The process control strategies implemented at Buick are no longer new to the industry, but the successful application of these developments is still rather unique in North America. Productivity improvements, determined to be a direct result of the process control developments, are the primary topics of this paper. Emphasis is placed on metallurgical benefits including both lead and zinc recoveries; lead concentrate grade; and reductions realized in reagent consumptions, operating costs, and personnel. A detailed description of the concentrator, along with a history of the process control development and a more in-depth discussion of the control strategies implemented at Buick can be found in the references. (The Buick flowsheet is depicted in Fig. 1).

"One critical factor in mineral reserves reporting, as well as mine-reserves reconciliation, is the impact of dilution and ore loss in the mining process. This paper considers the implications of various factors on dilution and ore loss projections, by orebody geometry, mining method, and ore control systems. We also discuss the implications of resource estimation methodology on dilution for reserves. DEFINITIONS Dilution and ore loss are two critical concepts in mining, which address the differences encountered between modeled grade and tonnages and actual production. Dilution is volume increase and grade reduction caused by multiple factors, chief among which are mining of waste material along ore-waste contacts, mining of internal waste as ore, and misclassification of waste as ore in the ore control process. There are also geostatistical and estimation aspects sometimes lumped with dilution, including the volume-variance effect (the tendency for small volumes of material to include a less regular distribution of grade than large volumes of material). Ore loss is described as reductions of ore volumes in the mining process due to misclassification of ore as waste in the ore control process, exclusion of discontinuous mineralization from mining due to geometry or continuity, and mechanical losses in the mining process. Dilution is typically taken as an increase in tonnes of ore with no change in contained metal (and thus results in a reduction in grade.) (Some workers consider the likely grade of the diluting material as well, particularly in deposits with gradational grade boundaries—this will be addressed later in the text.) Ore loss is typically taken as a reduction in tonnes at average grade of the ore, and thus results in a reduction in both tonnes and contained metal. The Spar Lake deposit is located in northwestern Montana, approximately 27 km (17 miles) south of Troy, MT, under Mt. Vernon. The deposit is a stratiform, stratabound copper-silver deposit occurring in the Revett Formation of the Proterozoic Belt Supergroup. Distribution of known sandstone-type deposits in the Revett Formation is shown in Fig. 1.

"The Toyama Line is under construction as a natural gas pipeline with a length of 102 km from Itoigawa City to Toyama City. A 2 km-long tunnel section of the pipeline that we are reporting here is being excavated in a mountain area away from an urban area. The geology under which the tunnel is constructed is collapsible fractured breccia slate and Holocene sandy soil. Other tunnels of the Hokuriku Expressway and Hokuriku Shinkansen are in service above the tunnel route. From the starting shaft on Toyama side, conventional tunneling was adopted to facilitate excavating the base rock layer and maintain enough distance from the Hokuriku Expressway tunnel. From the starting shaft on the Itoigawa side, TBM tunneling was adopted to cope with the unconsolidated soft ground for a 200 m-long section from the shaft. We will discuss the issues and countermeasures concerning the selection of a tunnel route and excavation methods, performance of both conventional and TBM tunneling, and underground connecting of these tunnels excavated by conventional (NATM) and TBM methods under a high groundwater pressure up to 1.2 MPa. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The International Petroleum Exploration Teiseki Co., Ltd. (INPEX) is constructing a high-pressure main pipeline network in the Toyama Prefecture area to promote the use and reliable supply of natural gas as shown in Figure 1. As part of the Toyama line project that has a total length of 102 km, A-1 construction, the nearest section to the tunneling starting point in Itoigawa City, where various tunnel excavation methods have been adopted to install the high-pressure pipeline 20 inches in diameter, a 2 km tunnel in the A-1 construction section discussed here is to be excavated by conventional and TBM methods in a mountain area. Based on environmental studies such as traffic jams due to frequent traffic of heavy vehicles disposing of soil, and the effects of dust, noise and vibration during construction, we selected the route to install the gas pipeline in a mountain area as shown in Figure 2, where the impact on the surrounding environment could be minimized."

In Mineral Processing, the objective of most processes is the separation of mixtures of minerals, which are originally associated in composite particles. Feed preparation processes grinding for instance, which take place before beneficiation or separation processes do not usually break particles at the boundary between mineral phases. They produce composite ("middlings") as well as liberated particle. It is therefore necessary, in a particulate system, to determine the proportion of particles which are liberated as well as, ideally, the size distribution of minerals which remain associated in composite particles. Up to now, there has been a lack of experimental techniques to characterize completely composite particulate systems. Heavy liquid separation which is commonly used to obtain information of this type can only be applied to simple binary cases for which one mineral has a low density (lower than e.g 2.8 ). The technique which is proposed in this paper involves the measurement of parameters on polished sections of particles mounted in a matrix, and the use of mathematical transformations to reconstruct in three-dimensions the information obtained from these measurements .
