On November 1991, Homestake Mining Co. completed the installation of a $5.7-million, 2.7-kt/d (3000-stpd) flotation circuit into the flowsheet of the McLaughlin Mine in California's coastal mountain range, about 113 km (70 miles) north of San Francisco. This addition reduced overall operating costs and improved the gold recovery of the low-grade refractory reserves over that expected from direct cyanidation. In addition, flotation provided a means to generate a sulfide concentrate that is used to supplement feed to the pressure oxidation circuit. The McLaughlin operation started in 1985 as the first pressure oxidation plant for treating sulfide refractory ore. During the mine's short history, efforts have been made to reduce costs and increase production through process development.

Hachinohe smelter, a zinc-lead blast furnace complex with the annual capacity of zinc plus lead of 100,000 tons, had originally treated normal zinc and lead sulfide concentrates. However, it is currently handling a great variety of raw feeds ranging from complex sulfides to oxidic recycled materials in view of resource economy, most of which are unsuitable for zinc electrolysis. This paper reports on some significant efforts recently carried out on improving sintering operation, i.e., the increasing use of secondaries against harmful ingredients like halogens, and the substantial reduction in energy use as the results of various modifications and improvements.

Performance assessments are carried out to monitor operations, to evaluate performance and to identify processing problems. The assessment involves collecting and analyzing representative samples from critical points in a flowsheet and interpreting the data. Sample analysis techniques include chemical analyses, mineralogical investigations, mineralogical analyses, and materials balancing. Chemical analyses provide the lowest cost assessment and should be used liberally, particularly in monitoring a process. Materials balances performed on chemical assays for a suite of samples are used as a first step in evaluating a process. Mineralogical investigations are more expensive than chemical analyses but need to be used only at the beginning of mining and metallurgical operations and as a second step in assessing processing problems. Quantitative mineralogical analyses combined with materials balancing provide the most complete performance assessment, but the procedure is expensive. On the other hand, the assessment has the potential of a large payback when carried out where warranted.

Tailings originating from the gravity concentration of a gold ore containing about 14 g/t Au have been treated by various beneficiation methods. These tailings have been screened on the 147 and 74 micron sieves and the two coarsest fractions have been separated on shaking tables with unsatisfactory results, but the concentrates have been examined in polished sections for mineragraphic analysis. Very simple flotation flowsheets have been applied to collect most of the gold, recovery and grade varying with the regrinding time in a ball mill. Cyanidation tests have shown that this type of treatment is also applicable to such tailings.

In this study, research on the use of monosodium glutamate for copper leaching, with emphasis on the thermodynamics and oxidant characteristics, is presented. Copper dissolution was conducted following a hydrometallurgical route, using monosodium glutamate in alkaline solutions. The effect of oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and potassium permanganate (KMnO4), and the efficiency of copper leaching with glutamate compared with glycine have been studied. Results, obtained at room temperature, showed 92% recovery of copper using 0.03 M hydrogen peroxide, 0.5 M monosodium glutamate at a pH of 9.44.

This paper reviews the impact of the idler set on the performance of belt conveyors. Idler rolls as part of the load support system and their interaction with the conveyor system will be discussed. in particular, the rotating performance of the individual idler roll concentrating on the rotating resistance and life of the bearing and seal design are addressed in detail. A basis for the development of performance specifications for use in conveyor design that takes advantage of the idler manufacturers design and manufacturing expertise is discussed.

Introduction Placer deposits account for one-half to two-thirds of the total gold produced worldwide. As many as 311 t (10 million oz) have been produced from some major districts. Several others are credited with 155 t (5 million oz). All the major districts and many lesser ones have similar characteristics. Consideration of these characteristics offers insight into the origin of gold in the deposit. Knowing the gold deposit's geologic history leads to useful conclusions in exploring for placer deposits and for deposits in consolidated areas. Placer Deposit Characteristics Table 1 lists 17 placer gold districts around the world and their characteristics. These include type and age of, mineralized source rocks, associated intrusive rocks, and age of intermediate sedimentary cycles. Although quartzite or sandstone occurs in the bedrock sequence in four of the 17 districts, slates, phyllites, or schists are present in all of the districts. Additionally, in all but three, the slates are pre-Mesozoic. And, in six of the remaining 14, the slates are Precambrian. Rocks intrusive into the slates are all of intermediate to acidic composition and are emplaced as stocks, dikes, or sills, rather than being batholithic in proportions. Intermediate interceptors have not been recognized in only three of the 17 districts. Data from China and Mongolia are inconclusive as to this characteristic. Black Shale Gold Higher than average gold values are found in modern sedimentary rocks in coarse granulites, conglomerates, sandstones, and gray-wackes. Not so predictably, higher than average gold values also occur in black shales and carbonaceous argillities. Li and Shokena (1974) found that, in the Proterozoic sedimentary and equivalent metamorphic rocks of the Enisei Ridge, carbonaceous and graphitic phyllites and schists were particularly enriched in gold. Korotayeva and Polikarpochkin (1969) reported gold content in organic rocks to be enriched up to 15 times more than the organic free shales and siltstones of the Nerchinsk Zavod region of eastern Transbaikal. Black shales can be gold interceptors as are rocks of the granulite facies. Gold occurs in shales in particulate, free form, in pyrite, adsorbed on clays, and precipitated on carbon. In copper-bearing shales of Poland's Fore-Sudetic monocline, Kucha (1973) reported gold present in organic compounds as well as in silver bearing minerals. Anoshin (1969) found a strong correlation between gold and the pelitic fraction of sediments in certain rocks of the Atlantic Ocean basin. Heavy metal absorption on clays results in agglomeration to the extent that the particles settle with the heavy mineral fraction in enriched strata. Piper and Graef (1974) think that gold in sediments on the flank of the East Pacific rise is of lithogenic origin. Crockett (1973), however, proposed a volcanogenic exhalative origin. A strong correlation between gold and volcanic activity exists in rocks of the Canadian Shield where tuffaceous sediments and porphyries are more frequently enriched in gold than rocks with no volcanic components. Volcanic rocks of intermediate to acidic composition are considered here to be the primary source of gold in black shales. Gold is concentrated in shales as detrital free grains with diameters less than 50 µm (270 mesh), as precipitates, and in pyrite or other sulfide minerals. This is the first step in the history of gold placer deposits. Grain Size Modification Gold, as free grains with diameters less than 50 µm (270 mesh), is too light to be concentrated hydraulically into placer deposits. Some process has increased the average size of the gold grains. Mobilization during regional metamorphism converts most of the gold into particulate grains or entrains it in microfractures in the sulfide minerals. With moderate folding, small, white, vitreous quartz veins develop. As deformation continues, larger, more conspicuous quartz veins are formed. Not everyone understands the concept of mineral royalty. Mineral royalty is a fee paid to a landowner by someone who extracts a mineral commodity from the owners property. The royalty contract between the lessor and lessee contains clauses and conditions that are significant to both parties, e.g., annual m1n1mum, escalation factor, duration of the lease, reclamation and assignability. Comparison of royalty rates requires knowledge of many conditions that influence the value of a given deposit. People in several different professions benefit from shared royalty information.

Deep bed media filtration is used as a tertiary treatment step (after hydrocyclones and flotation cells) to remove fine oil droplets and solids from oilfield water before reinjection disposal or to remove particulate material from surface waters used for waterflood injection. Oil and solids injection requirements are typically <5 ppm concentration at <2 micron diameter. The preferred media for produced water filtration is walnut or pecan shell, however the use of this media has evolved by trial & error and the fundamental mechanisms that occur during separation and media cleaning have not been investigated. A project was initiated to fill in this knowledge gap by analyzing the physical, mechanical, chemical, and hydrodynamic properties of six types of granular filtration media (12/20 mesh size): garnet, silica, anthracite, pecan shell, English walnut shell, and black walnut shell. Comparison of bed packing, oil wetting, attrition resistance, particle strength, and fluidization has led to an understanding of the preferred filtration media for separation of fine oil droplets and solids.

In this paper, the results of mathematical modeling of casing pipes decontamination from radio-active new mineral forms directly in boreholes using hydrochloric and hydro-silicic-fluoric acids are presented. Modeling for highly and low radioactive coatings on the walls of casing pipes of Anastasievka oil-and-gas deposit was performed using GEMS software, based on the method of Gibbs energy minimization. Calculations have shown that thorianite and goethite, that are present in low-active crusts, detected in casing pipes uplifted from comparatively low depths, are well dissolved in hydrochloric acid, but radiobarite is almost insoluble. For the same acid concentrations, almost all radiobarite of high-active coatings detected in pipes uplifted from considerable depth is dissolved. To evaluate the possibility of decontamination of pipes from radiobarite of low-active coatings, modeling of crust dissolution under the action of H2SiF6 has been performed. The results have shown that for acid concentrations of more than 13 % almost all Ra and Ba are dissolved while all iron and thorium remains in goethite-thorianite solid solution. For the same acid concentration, almost all radiobarite from high-active coatings is dissolved. Therefore, no reagent allows decontamination of pipes from coatings of both types. It seems that successive or simultaneous use of both reagents (HCl and H2SiF6) in certain ratio is required. To clarify this issue, further experimental and model investigations are necessary. The issue of decontamination of casing pipes from galena that is present in high-active crusts also needs to be clarified.

Chemisorbed oleate films on the surfaces of fluorite, barite, and calcite were studied by means of infrared spectrophotometry. Evidence is presented which indicates the mineral anions, i.e., fluoride, sulfate, and carbonate, are displaced from the mineral surfaces as a result of the adsorption from aqueous solutions. Also, chemisorption reactions between oleic acid and fluorite or calcite occurred spontaneously in the absence of water. Carbon dioxide was identified as a reaction product when dry calcite was contacted with oleic acid. There was no evidence of reaction between oleic acid and barite in the absence of water.

Cable bolts are used as a means of rock support around underground excavations in many mines across Canada and around the world. A substantial body of research on cable bolting was conducted at a number of Canadian universities and mines from the mid-1980s through the 1990s. Since then, research into selected areas of cable bolting practice has continued in Canada. The research has focussed on cable bolt instrumentation and on the inclusion of cable bolts in empirical stope design techniques. A review of cable bolting practice is now warranted at many mines. It has been five years since the completion of the previous substantial body of Canadian academic research and the associated advancement in understanding of cable bolt design, implementation and verification practice. Attempts were made at that time to transfer the new design procedures and performance assessment technologies to mine-site personnel. In some cases, this was effective, and ground control personnel continue to improve on their cable bolting practice at each specific mine site. However, at other sites, experienced people have moved on, and the new, less experienced personnel do not have access to the training or technical resources required to improve their understanding of the subject. In other cases, the technology was not transferred effectively to practitioners, with the result that substantial improvements can be made to the cable bolting practice at those mines. Guidelines for auditing cable bolting practice are provided in this paper. The guidelines include a discussion of the objectives of the audit, suggestions for audit procedure and a summary of the possible outcomes of a cable bolt audit. The objectives of an audit might include assessing the reasons for unexpected cable bolt failures, evaluating the quality of the installation procedures, quantifying the efficiency of the cable bolt system and assessing training requirements and procedures. A cable bolt audit should include consideration of all aspects of the cable bolting cycle, including the design, implementation and verification phases of the operation. At the end of the audit, a ranking should be assigned to the components of the cycle. The ranking system can then be used to identify items that require immediate attention, others that could be improved and others that are adequate. Following completion of a cable bolt audit, increased confidence in the support system and its application is generally, found, along with the potential for cost savings in many cases.

Laboratory and field scale kinetic testing was conducted to evaluate scaling up of laboratory data. Two 20- tonne (field) cells were monitored for internal temperature, pH, conductivity, volume and rate of flow, and water quality. On a surface are. basis, results showed sulfide oxidation rates obtained using 50-kg cells are more sensitive to changes in aeration than those from 1-kg cells. Correcting the laboratory oxidation rates for field temperatures with a pH 7 activation energy, which is in the field drainage pH range, returned oxidation rates an order of magnitude lower than the field cell rates.

Mechanical mining is steadily gaining in usage in the mining industry. A variety of machines are now being used, including tunnel boring machines, roadheaders, continuous miners, surface miners and augers. These machines have advantages compared to drill-and-blast mining methods, including increased safety, lower cost, uniform muck size and accurately sized openings. A century of experience with mechanical methods has paid dividends to the coal industry. Current trends guarantee eventual development of true general-purpose hard-rock mechanical mining machines. When several significant challenges have been met, mechanical miners will become integrated mining systems and will determine the design of mines.

With the successful implementation of supervisory control on the Bagdad concentrator grinding circuits, steps have been taken to expand supervisory control to the flotation circuits. This paper discusses the design and installation of the slurry delivery systems, analyzing instruments, level control devices, reagent pumps and supervisory software. Emphasis is placed on the design and installation of a reliable slurry transport system to feed the Courier 30 online analyzing instruments. Total system availability has been measured at plus 95%. Phase 1 acceptance testing of the supervisory software indicates a notable increase in copper recovery with no significant change in final copper grade.

Broadly conceived, the demand for electricity depends upon three sets of variables: (i) the growths of the many individual demands for energy services; (ii) the competitiveness of electrically driven technologies in meeting these demands; and (iii) the energy-conversion efficiencies of installed electrical technologies. The first set of variables establishes the size of the potential market; the second, the market penetration of electrical equipment; and the third, the quantity of electricity required to operate the equipment. All forecasts of electricity consumption ultimately depend upon inferred or assumed relationships to describe the future behavior of these variables. This partitioning of the demand-forecasting problem is conceptually useful and will guide the discussion presented in this paper. However, it is also something of an oversimplification. Examined in more detail, the electricity fore-casting problem is exceedingly complex. The variables mentioned above are, in turn, found to depend upon more fundamental sets of demographic technological, resource, and policy variables. The demand projections developed by the major forecasting services are usually developed in terms of these underlying variables, which themselves must be independently forecast.
