EIMCO Process Equipment Company has introduced the new SmartCell series of conventional flotation cells. The flagship of this new development is the 5000 ft3 cell that is the largest available in industry. This new series of cells includes a cylindrical tank design, a conical draft tube and froth crowder. Optional air control, wash water addition and embedded expert control are available. A discussion of the design parameters, energy efficiency, testing, and commercial plant results are presented.

The perlite industry in the United States continued to undergo rapid change and increased competition last year as it did in 2002. U.S. production in 2004 was 510 kt (562,000 st),an increase following five consecutive years of decline (Table 1). Perlite is exported to Canada and to the Pacific Rim. These partially offset imports. Perlite imports from Greece to the eastern and Gulf Coasts of the United States declined by about 22 percent after reaching a record 240 kt (264,000 st) in 2003.But their market remains protected by high rail rates from western U.S. plants. Minor imports of perlite persist by Termolita from Mexico.

The River Vormbäcken is the recipient of treated AMD from the Kristineberg mine site, northern Sweden, where mining of a complex sulfidic ore has taken place since 1940. Parts of the river flow through different kinds of wetlands. The changes in metal concentrations and water chemistry that occur upon passing these wetlands have been studied by analysis of water chemistry data from a number of stations along the river collected during 11 years of monthly sampling. It is concluded that the impact and functioning of wetlands cannot be elucidated from chemistry data alone. Future studies including e.g. reconstructed water flow are needed.

The engineering profession has traditionally devoted its efforts to understanding and modifying the Earth's environment in order to adapt it to man's needs. In appraising our overall performance, I would have to say it has been a mixed bag. In many areas, notably communications taken in the broadest sense, and development of creature comforts, we have done a good job. In others, we have failed, particularly in our assessment of the effect of our work on the environment. Our failures have been due in part to a lack of understanding or foresight, and in part to a disproportionate emphasis on lowest first cost. Now, with an increasingly large number of people living in a finite environment, there is an urgent need for reassessment. It is no longer possible to pursue a single objective without regard to its side effects. Our projects are too large, and there are too many of them. Environmental impacts must be taken into account in all important engineering decisions of the future. There are forces at work which will help to bring this about. Thinking people everywhere have realized that adverse alteration of our environment eventually affects every one of us. The majority of our citizens, who now live in cities, are beginning to appreciate the advantages of a good natural environment in a way which others who have been closer to the soil have appreciated for years. Our people have flocked to the cities because they wanted to be "where the action is." At the same time, there is a strong desire for what we have come to call the quality of life. Gold occurrences have been reported in Alagbede, southwestern Nigeria, but a mineral potential map (MPM) to guide academics and investors in the area is still needed. As a result, geophysical methods (aeromagnetics and aero-radiometry) have been used to assess the potential for gold minerals in the area. Several enhancement filters, such as reduction to the equator, upward continuation, analytical signal, second vertical derivative, and power spectrum analysis, were applied to the aeromagnetic data to understand the subsurface geology better. The enhancement filters applied to airborne radiometry data are K/eTh, ternary color composite, F parameter, and deviation from the ideal K values (Kd). Geophysical data analysis was used for structural mapping and geological reconstruction, while aero-radiometric data was used for hydrothermal alteration mapping. The primary trend observed in the area’s magnetically inferred structural framework map is NE-SW, while a few are in the NW–SE and E-W trends. These observed trends show that the study area suffered at least three deformation episodes. Geological evidence of gold mineralization, such as favorable lithology, geological structure, and hydrothermal alterations, has been fused to produce a reliable MPM of the area. The geographical location of the existing mineral sites in the investigated area agrees with the geological structures and the MPM produced there. Thus, the systematic approach adopted in this study can be extended to other supracrustal belts of a typical Precambrian basement complex worldwide to ensure the reliability of orogenic gold mapping and resource management.

Magnetic liners can improve the performance of ball mills by increasing grinding efficiency, extending service life, and reducing maintenance costs. Despite their importance, the fundamental understanding and the quantitative investigation on the effects of the magnetic liners has not been addressed in the literature. This paper addresses this gap by studying charge motion, and how the use of a magnetic liner affects the breakage mechanism of the mill, using discrete element method (DEM) modeling and the Hertz-Mindlin contact model with relative velocity dependent (RVD) rolling friction. Charge motion was modeled under different mill speeds. Compared to conventional steel and rubber liners, the charge motion in the magnetic liner mill was predominantly cascading. Quantitative analysis of the energy dissipation within the mill was conducted to investigate mill breakage. Regardless of speed, over 50% of the total energy dissipation in the magnetic liner mill was in the form of abrasion and attrition. The results highlighted the appeal of magnetic liners in secondary and regrinding application, where abrasion and attrition are considered more efficient in the fine material breakage, and where impact is ideally minimized to reduce mill wear. A number of experiments were conducted to assess the effect of different model parameters on the performance of the magnetic liner mill. The highest abrasion/attrition intensity was observed with high values of the model parameters namely the restitution coefficient, static friction coefficient, and rolling friction coefficient.

Coal production in the United States increased in2004 by 36 Mt (39.7 million st) to end the year at 1 Gt(1.11 billion st), according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This was a 3.7-percent in-crease from 2003’s 971.6 Mt (1.07 billion st) (Table 1).(All percentage change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) Although U.S. coal consumption rose in 2004, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sectors by 1 percent and declined slightly in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption dropped by 2.4 percent. U.S. coal exports rose for the second consecutive year, while coal imports again increased to record levels. Coal stocks declined during the year, as electric generators used their stockpiles to helpmeet increased demands and missed shipments. Coal producers used their stockpiles to supplement their production levels.

"Mitigation may be considered a hurdle when it comes to environmental permitting. For complex projects with site specific mitigation plans, the time to devise those plans and get them approved can be a long and costly endeavor. However, mitigation options are expanding and the mitigation banking industry has grown tremendously over the last two decades, helping projects move forward with less debate. Mining companies are recognizing the value that mitigation banks provide in helping to shore up project timelines and costs. Where possible, companies are taking advantage of the opportunities to buy credits from thirdparty providers offering mitigation bank credits. In some instances, mining companies are taking matters into their own hands by establishing mitigation banks to realize their own mitigation freedom. That can have its advantages and disadvantages, as discussed below. All in all, the expansion of mitigation options has streamlined the permitting process, introduced flexibility, improved project permitting timelines and loosened the permitting girdle.Compensatory mitigationCompensatory mitigation involves actions taken to offset unavoidable adverse impacts to wetlands, streams and other aquatic resources and authorized by Clean Water Act section 404 permits and other permits. As such, compensatory mitigation is a critical tool in helping the federal government meet the longstanding national goal of ‘‘no net loss’’ of Waters of the U.S., both in acreage and function.Section 314 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2004 required the Secretary of the Army, acting through the Chief of Engineers, to issue regulations “establishing performance standards and criteria for the use, consistent with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, of on-site, offsite, and in-lieu fee mitigation and mitigation banking.” The provision also required that those regulations ‘‘maximize available credits and opportunities for mitigation, provide flexibility for regional variations in wetland conditions, functions and values, and apply equivalent standards and criteria to each type of compensatory mitigation’’ (73 FR 19595). The result was the Final Rule on Compensatory Mitigation for Losses of Aquatic Resources issued in 2008 (33 CFR Parts 325 and 332).”"

"This work focuses on the extraction of rare earth metals (REE) from aqueous solutions using stimuli-responsive polymers. Various parameters affecting the adsorption capacity of the polymer, including pH, polymer concentration and REE concentration were studied. The interfacial behavior of REE in aqueous phase before and after polymer addition and the mechanism of the formation of metal-polymer complexes and their properties were investigated using UV/VIS spectroscopy. Results obtained would help to test the feasibility of employing stimuli responsive polymers in pre-concentration of rare earth elements associated with other elements in mineral aqueous streams prior to solvent extraction. The pre-concentration step would reduce the amount of organic solvents used for extraction and striping compared to conventional extraction processes. INTRODUCTION Rare earth elements (REEs) have become the foundation for several technologies and have been used extensively in many industries such as modern electronics, green energy, health care and transportation and defense [1-4]. As these industry sectors are growing, the global consumption of REEs is going to increase dramatically. The current global REEs demand is estimated to be 105,000 tons of rare earth oxides per annum with an expected annual growth of 5.6% [5-6]. Rare earth elements are produced from different sources (primary and secondary). China is considered as the largest producer of REE in the world, providing about 90% of the world’s mine production while the United States is second with 4% of the mine production [7]. High global demand for rare earth materials results in shortage of such materials in the near future. It should be considered that the term ‘‘rare’’ earth is not an accurate term, since they are abundant in some extent in the Earth’s crust, but are typically finely dispersed. Thus, nowadays looking for more efficient and cheaper methods for extraction, separation and purification of low concentrated REE ores and exploring secondary sources are essential. Rare earth materials are found in raw condition and require treatment that involves several processes, which can consume money and time. Recent improvements in extraction and recycling technology have made the extraction of rare earth elements from rare earth sources more feasible in terms of cost and time [8-10]. Physical and pyrometallurgical methods require high-energy and thus high costs. Moreover, due to environmental problems, environmental protection systems are required, and they are not as adaptable as chemical processes [11, 12]."

The complexity of large geographically diverse or multicommodity mining companies requires a corporate structure, which provides the maximum long-term effectiveness. Structure models exist along the spectrum of centralization to decentralization. This paper examines the trade-offs of flexibility, cost, decision making, consistent strategies, and corporate control associated with different structural models as applied to mining companies. The mining industry typically lends itself to a business unit model. However, the degree of decentralization depends on size, proximal operations, technical complexity, product mix, geographic spread, mining methods employed, and the inherent capabilities of an organization.

To accommodate growth in air service and to follow the Master Plan for long-term airport development, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority established thed2 Development Program at Washington Dulles International Airport. A sub-surface Automated People Mover (APM) System is under construction to replace the Mobile Lounges as the primary people mover system at Dulles. To minimize disruption to airport operations the majority of the APM System’s crossings of Taxi lanes will be undertaken using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) or the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). This paper explores the planning and design of these shallow tunnel segments for future generation aircraft loads, within the constraints of minimal construction access under post 9/11 security requirements and the context of the overall airport expansion program.

PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT The Big Walnut Augmentation Rickenbacker Interceptor project began in 1995with the preparation of the Scope of Services for the design of the Rickenbacker Interceptor, with service to and around the Rickenbacker Air Force base. The air base was soon to be placed under civilian control through a Port Authority, with an expected influx of businesses and services, requiring increased sanitary service capability. Due to political differences regarding annexation and other issues, the project was placed on hold. In mid 1996 the Scope of Services was rewritten with more emphasis on a tunneling option, but still only addressing the air base and surrounding tributary are a sanitary service requirements. The consultant selection process began in late 1996 with the Request for Statements of Qualifications issued in December. Three firms were selected to furnish proposals based on the revised Scope of Services that now included requirements for hydraulic modeling of the service areas and the Big Walnut Outfall (BWO) and an expanded soil investigation requirement. All three firms were requested to make presentations to the selection committee, with the committee selecting URS Greiner for further consideration and negotiation. A contract was entered into in August of 1997with URS Greiner. The major sub-consultants were Lachel and Associates, Inc., H.R.Gray and Associates and Solar Testing Laboratories, Inc. The project began with geological investigations, preliminary soil borings, well investigations, tributary area evaluations, hydraulic modeling of the BWO system and research into other projects planned for the Rickenbacker airport and surrounding area. The hydraulic modeling of the BWO and the proposed Rickenbacker Interceptor confirmed that the BWO suffered wet weather surcharging and would require augmentation to properly convey the future flows to the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant(SWWTP). The project scope expanded to include evaluation of both the Rickenbacker Interceptor and the Big Walnut Augmentation projects. Both projects previously identified in the Capital Improvements Program. The work on the expanded scope for the Big Walnut Augmentation and the Rickenbacker Interceptor began with the evaluation of a parallel 2.75 meter (108") diameter augmentation sewer from SWWTP to S.R. 317and Parsons Avenue, then continuing east along S.R. 317 as the Rickenbacker Interceptor. Paste backfill, because of its colloidal or water-holding properties, does not produce run-off water when placed underground. Paste backfill is generally, prepared from relatively low water content, full mill tailings with a certain proportion of ultra-fine particles and mixed with cement, thus producing early and better strength. Mill plant discharge tailings and other materials available at or near the mine site such as sand, aggregates or waste rock are used as blending materials in the mix design. This study investigates the influence of the above-mentioned blending materials on the mechanical characteristics of paste backfill, as well as the grading, shape, specific surface area, mineralogy and workability of the different mix design.

Attempts are made to evaluate the feasibility of using a water-injection cyclone for the concentration of iron ore fines. The separation characteristics of clay fines, containing large amounts of alumina and silica, from the iron values are discussed. The effects of critical variables, such as injection water rate, truncated cone diameter, spigot opening and vortex finder diameter, on the performance of a water-injection cyclone in terms of iron, alumina and silica grades; iron recoveries; and alumina and silica rejections are discussed. A set of 16 full-factorial experiments (24) was carried out to gain an understanding of the individual and interaction effects of the variables. The results indicate that classifying iron ore fines containing 63.0% iron, 2.5% alumina and 3.5% silica through a water-injection cyclone can produce concentrates with iron grades greater than 66.0% and alumina and silica contents less than 1.5% and 2.0%, respectively, at different study conditions. The achievable iron recovery values are greater than 88%, and alumina and silica rejections are more than 80% and 50%, respectively, within the specific study conditions. While the truncated cone diameter, injection water rate and spigot diameter influences the alumina rejection to a considerable extent, it is mostly influenced by the vortex finder diameter. The iron recovery and silica rejection values are mostly influenced by spigot diameter and truncated cone diameter. The effect of injection water on the concentration characteristics depend on the prevalent truncated cone diameter and spigot diameter conditions.

"During the past decade, column flotation cells have become widely accepted for upgrading ultrafine sulfide ores. However, the use of columns has been widely relegated to cleaner circuits due to their comparatively high selectivity derived from the use of wash water dispersed over a deep froth. High tonnage rates and low feed grades make using column technology in roughing and scavenger stages challenging due to the resulting size of the needed equipment. To specifically address this challenge, a new high-intensity flotation system known as the StackCell™ was developed. This technology makes use of a novel pre-aeration method coupled with froth washing to simultaneously provide improved flotation kinetics and selectivity. The novel aeration system provides efficient bubble-particle contacting thereby shortening the residence time required for particle collection. This article reviews the technical design features of this new flotation technology and presents recent data from in-plant pilot testing in a copper-sulfide application. INTRODUCTION Column flotation cells have become very popular in the minerals processing industry for cleaner circuits due to their ability to produce a high-grade froth concentrate via the use of froth washing (Luttrell et al., 1999; Kohmuench et al., 2004). The use of wash water minimizes the nonselective recovery of ultrafine impurities that are normally entrained into the froth product from conventional flotation machines. On the other hand, the unique design of a column cell typically requires a large tank volume. Column cells must be tall to ensure that the pulp residence time is long enough to offset their inherently slow flotation kinetics and to minimize internal mixing that is detrimental to overall cell performance. The tall design minimizes the total floor space required for the column installation, but substantially increases the foundation load. The large size of the column tank can also create issues during fabrication, transportation and installation. To address these concerns, the engineering team at Eriez Manufacturing developed a next-generation flotation technology called the StackCell?. This high-intensity flotation machine was designed to provide column-like separation performance within a very compact volumetric footprint. This article describes the key working features of this new technology and provides data from recent pilot-scale tests conducted in gold and copper-sulfide applications"

The last decade has witnessed a rapid development and application of slurry and EPB type tunnel boring machines. Both soft ground types are able to excavate tunnels in unstable ground conditions below the water table with positive face support. The most significant component of the excavation process is the cutterhead and tool con-figuration were the excavation and face support meets the geological challenge. The TBM downstream processes cannot take place unless the cutterhead and tools effectively do their job. This paper will review the current state of the art design for both slurry and EPB cutterheads and highlight both common as well as geological specific design features.

The exclusion of coal fly ash from regulation as a hazardous waste has led to increased interest in returning ash to the coalfields for co-disposal. A multi-year column study used coal refuse with high potential acidity (4% total-S), and two alkaline ashes in various bulk-blends. The unamended refuse acidified rapidly, producing acidic (pH 1.7) leachates, high in dissolved metals. Treatments blended with sufficiently high amounts (20 to 33%) of alkaline ash produced alkaline (pH >8.4) leachates with low metal levels, while lower ash blending rates acidified over time to produce metalliferous leachates. Examination of solid materials indicated that pyrite oxidation was occurring to some extent in all treatments. A regression equation (r2 = 0.95) was developed to estimate time to net acid release for mixtures of these materials. Ash alkalinity and refuse potential acidity must be balanced to insure water quality for co-disposal environments, or the ash materials should be isolated away from acidic drainage waters.

Often geometallurgical models are prepared at various project stages from very few data and are assumed to be representative of very large tonnages. These may include recovery models; crushing and grinding parameters and models; models of concentrate grades; models of acid consumption; etc. These models commonly do not carry a measure of uncertainty or variability, and are taken at face value at the time of design and planning. This paper proposes a proactive approach to modelling variability, providing uncertainty estimates and thus allowing for risk analysis and mitigation of geometallurgical models. The variability model is built up by understanding the limitations of the pillars of a geometallurgical model: data uncertainty; geologic model uncertainty; domain definition uncertainty; and parameter estimation uncertainty. Of these factors, typically domain definition is the most significant contributor to geometallurgical model variability. First, the fundamental supports for these models are briefly discussed, with domain definition emphasized. Second, two methods for uncertainty modelling are proposed. The first, more applicable to conceptual or early-stage projects, is a simpler and more expedient alternative that provides initial assessments of variability. This is intended to aid management in decision-making related to budgeting, including further sampling and testing. The second, a block-by-block approach that allows a detailed assessment of risk for specific designs and mine plans, thus providing further opportunities for mitigation. In the example provided, emphasis is placed in communicating this variability to both management and technical personnel in the form of “measured-indicated-inferred” indicators and also block-by-block confidence intervals.
