Central America is graduating this year into large scale mining with the start up of Inco's multi-million dollar nickel laterite processing plant in Guatemala. In the other extreme of the Isthmus in Panama Texas Gulf Sulphur is doing check diamond drilling and foundation test drilling at the Cerro Colorado copper porphyry. The higher price of gold and silver has spurred development and exploration of several small precious metal mines. The purpose of this presentation is to make a brief resumé of the most important mines operating in the area and a list of significant exploration projects. Also, tables will be shown to compare mining codes and taxes. Unfortunately these tables lack information on Panama. Before starting I like to express my appreciation to Kennecott Copper who permitted the use of some of the data compiled by the author on their behalf during the year 1975. Other persons which did not want to be named also have my gratitude.

Design and optimization of open pit limits are of paramount importance because they provide information for evaluating the economic potential of a mineral deposit and for developing short and long range mine plans. Many algorithms and their modifications have been used to design and optimize open pit limits. These algorithms have provided mine planning engineers with pertinent information in designing, optimizing and extracting ore reserves by open pit technology. However, they do not address the random field properties associated with the ore grades and reserves and commodity prices, and thus, fail to yield the truly optimized pit limits in any time horizon. In this paper, a new algorithm, MCSIMFNN, which overcomes these limitations is proposed and used to optimize open pit limits. The random field properties of the ore grade and reserves have been modelled using the modified conditional simulation based on the best linear unbiased estimation and local average subdivision techniques. Artificial neural networks are used to classify the blocks into classes based on their conditioned values. The error back propagation algorithm, in the neural networks, is used to optimize the pit limits by minimizing the desired and actual outputs error in a multi- layer perceptron under the pit wall slope constraints. The optimized pit value obtained by this algorithm has been compared to that from the Lerchs-Grossman's algorithm in a case study. The results are the same, but in random multivariable states, the MCSI MFNN algorithm is the most suitable for pit optimization. The method is also fast since it mimics the operation of the brain in the solution of the pit optimization problem.

The purpose of this paper is to set the stage for (1) the determination of the specifications and actions required for a successful development of a system for the management of waste deposits and contaminants resulting from activities in the mineral industries and landfills and (2) the appropriate infrastructure to be developed at the industrial level. The design of this system would be such that its application could be extended to other industries as well. Waste deposits and contaminants from activities in the mineral industries and landfills commonly cause damage to the environment. In addition to precautionary measures aiming to protect against environmental impact, early warning and immediate response to mining hazards and contaminants is a requirement for sustainable development. Hazard detection and control requires continuous and real-time detection techniques, as well as methods for tracing and predicting the motion of contaminants and waste products. The efficient accomplishment of these goals in the minerals industry requires developing an integrated system for environmental monitoring using remote sensing technologies, in combination with advanced image analysis and geostatistical techniques.

High-resolution ground-penetrating radar (GPR) was used to image the near-surface extent of two exposed Late Cretaceous kimberlites intruded into lower Permian limestone and dolomite host rocks in northeast Kansas. Six parallel GPR profiles identify the margin of the Randolph 1 kimberlite by the up-bending and termination of limestone reflectors. Five radially intersecting GPR profiles identify the elliptical margin of the Randolph 2 kimberlite by the termination of dolomite reflectors near or below the kimberlite's mushroom shaped cap. These results suggest GPR may augment magnetic methods for the delineation of kimberlites or other forceful intrusions in a layered host rock where thick, conductive soil or shale is not present at the surface.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) Ventilation Division continues to evaluate proposed explosion-resistant seal designs. There are currently eleven specific designs for explosion-resistant seals that are suitable for construction in underground coal mines. Seal construction in operating mines must be equivalent to those constructed in the Experimental Mine during the explosion testing program. Accidental failures of seals have occurred due to explosion pressures below 138 Kpa (20 psi). The possibility exists that the failed seals were not properly constructed. Also, conditions in the vicinity of the seals may change. Water may accumulate against the seals, heave or sag may cause detrimental effects on the seals, and sloughage of the ribs may negate hitching. If seals are not properly installed or maintained, they could fail when subjected to explosion pressures. If seals fail for any reason, the possibility exists for explosion propagation throughout large areas of the mine. There could be catastrophic consequences to an event of this nature. This report will present a limited discussion on the construction of each of these seals and will address related issues.

Conventional methods of drill hole site selection are reviewed briefly. Two approaches using geostatistics are then discussed, both of which have been shown to yield improved results. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is described which will select the best locations for drilling from a user specified number of possible drill sites. Two options are discussed. First, the user can specify a maximum drilling investment or a maximum number of drill holes and the program will select the locations yielding the minimum estimation variance. This amounts to getting the most for a given investment. Alternatively, a maximum tolerable estimation variance can be specified and the program will select the number and location of the drill holes to obtain the desired information at a minimum cost. Another benefit of the approach is the quantification of the tradeoffs between investment and information obtained.

The current edition of The Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code was published in 2012 and, after a transition period, the 2012 edition came into mandatory operation on Dec. 1, 2013. There is a significant change between JORC 2004 (Clause 44) and JORC 2012 (Clause 49) for the reporting of industrial mineral resources and reserves, which should be addressed by ASX-listed players in the industrial minerals space.

Planning today for what hopefully will never happen is one of the surest ways to decrease the chance of it happening. As Napoleon proved and Ian Mitroff wrote, "The heat and stress of battle is the worst time to make decisions of strategic importance." Mitroff also wrote, "The value of a plan is not that it will ever perfectly match reality, but going through the process of planning speeds the process of recovery. It allows the organization to emotionally work through the worst before it actually happens." This paper concentrates on things miners must consider; on the need for plans to be like a belt conveyor strong enough to carry the load, flexible enough to stretch a little; on the criticality of throwing away fax machines and telephones, and having certain officials at the scene rather than back in head-quarters; on the training of fire brigades and mine-rescue teams; on having company-controlled chromatographs; on having people who can look at trends rather than numbers. Some of the things in this paper might anger some readers; for that, I can only ask them to consider first the problem not their position.

Another record year vas experienced by the mining industry as the value of nonfuel minerals production soared to $23.5 billion-up 15% from the previous year. Based on preliminary estimates by the Bureau of Mines, US mine output was the basis for about $225 billion worth of minerals-derived materials. Metal mining accounted for $8.5 billion, or 36%, of the total. Of the 22 metals produced in the US, 11 showed quantity increases, while 16 had value increases. Business Week's survey of 1200 companies (Mar. 17, 1980, pg. 81) revealed that 21 metals and mining companies had sales increases of 30% with earnings up 104%. Higher prices and increased demand for metals were primary factors behind the improved performance. The steel sector reported a 30% decrease in earnings for the year, but the slump was primarily the result of a $383-million loss for US Steel coupled with a 17% decrease in earnings at Inland Steel. Other firms did well in 1979, with earnings up 279% at Interlake and 269% at Kaiser Steel. Major obstacles facing the steel industry included substantial tonnages of dumped and subsidized imports, environmental expenditures, runaway inflation, and price controls. Turning to nonmetallic production, of the 49 commodities reported by the US Bureau of Mines, 29 had higher outputs and 39 had increased values. While production statistics may seem encouraging, government regulations continued to stifle industry efforts to develop needed new capacity. A case in point may be publication of the Environmental Protection Agency's simplified procedure to streamline five permit programs by consolidating them into one. The five included: hazardous waste management, national pollution discharge elimination, dredge and fill, underground injection control, and prevention of significant deterioration. The new procedure, published by EPA in the Federal Register, took 149 pages. AMC's J.A. Overton, Jr., noted that (MCJ, Nov. 1979, p. 39) to visually depict the complexity of the proposed regulations, Sell Oil Co. developed a flow chart mapping a path through one section. The chart required 10 days to map and two weeks for two draftsmen, using computerized drafting techniques, to plot the results. Overton said, "Perhaps the greatest service EPA has performed in preparing its proposal is to demonstrate again that federal regulations have become a complexity compounded by confu¬sion that culminates in a conundrum." While regulatory agencies promulgate new regulations, the lack of a cohesive government minerals policy remained a matter of significant importance to mine management. A non-fuel minerals study to provide input to the Administration for a national minerals policy program was a dismal shock, according to Rep. Jim D. Santini (D-NV). He said the first phase of the program, which was to identify industry problems, failed to come to grips with the hard decisions necessary regarding these problems, their impact, and their interrelationship. Santini said the report failed to acknowledge government's role in the process and absolved the government of any adverse influence on the domestic minerals industry. In response to the phase one report, eight senior mining executives testified before Santini's House Subcommittee on Mines and Mining concerning mineral supply, access to foreign sources, environmental protection, conservation and recycling, national security, and capital formation. By year's end, Rep. Santini promised to prepare a hard-hitting committee report on problems affecting the non-fuel minerals industry to provide a better base for subsequent policy recommendations (MCJ, Jan. 1980, p. 34). On the technological front, interest again centered on mechanization, automation, and scaleup to improve and expand production. Computer use increased for calculation of ore reserves, mine planning, operations research, and mineral processing.

Use of geostatistics to solve mining problems is gaining importance as the cost of developing new mines is increasing and there is a need to mine more marginal deposits. But, until recently, coal companies have shown little or no interest in geostatistics. However, the stringent quality controls on coal burning has led to a surge in interest in improved methods for estimating clean coal characteristics. Until now, most of the geostatistical applications have centered on the problems of estimating in-situ coal characteristics (Sabourin, 1975; Wood, 1976, 1979; Fang and Stark, 1976; Pauncz and Nixon, 1979; and Knudsen et al., 1980). Little work has been done in applying geostatistics to coal washability, except that by Armstrong (1980). Applying geostatistics to coal washability basically means the estimation of cleaned coal characteristics, with the aid of geostatistics. Cleaned coal estimation plays a very important role in overall emission control strategy, as can be seen by the general flow diagram of such a strategy shown in Figure 1. The scope of this paper is limited to one aspect of the overall emission control strategy shown in Figure 1; namely, the prediction of cleaned coal characteristics using geostatistics.

The effects of postmining land use planning are addressed in this paper. These effects may include savings in reclamation costs and increased value of reclaimed land. However, this may result in greater planning costs and possible delays in production. Therefore, an economic analysis was undertaken in an effort to determine the importance of each potential result and to quantify the overall economic impact of postmining land use planning. A discounted cash flow analysis was performed using a surface mine cost model to analyze the sensitivity of selling price to changes in various postmining land use planning parameters. As a result of this analysis it was determined that the profitability of a project is most sensitive to delays in production, particularly, if the delay occurs after major investments have been made. Many methods have been proposed for evaluating postmining land use alternatives (Sweigard and Ramani, 1981). Both quantitative methods, such as benefit-cost analysis (Brock and Brooks, 1968), and nonquantitative methods have been proposed. The application of one specific analytical method is pursued in this paper.

Fractures of sedimentary rocks in the vicinity of the outcrop are commonly encountered around the world. Mine highwalls and numerous highway cuts give excellent views for detailed study of surface fractures. This paper gives an explanation of the origin of fractures as well as characterization of the distribution and extent of joint system with reference to lithologic composition of the rocks. Practical implications of the joint system affecting mine operations are described. Among the subjects discussed are: discontinuous deformation as an effect of surface subsidence, stability of mine portals and near outcrop underground operations, and stability of highwalls, when using highwall miners and strip operations. Some design procedures are recommended that can minimize the problems encountered in mining areas with intense joint systems.

Canada encompasses an area of approximately 9,976,000 kilometres. It is comparable in size to the United States, but because of climatic conditions and limited transportation facilities, much of the area is unsuitable for agricultural or industrial development. We have a population of 22,000,000 - most of whom reside within a hundred mile belt paralleling the Canadian-U.S. border. Our principal cities in order of size are Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and Winnipeg. We have a total of 10 provinces, each of which elects its own - government. The Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories covering the northern half of the country, are administered by federal government agencies. The mining industry employs approximately 9% of the labour force and accounts for more than 40% of all tonnage shipped on Canadian railroads and inland waterways. In 1974 it produced $4,800 million in mineral wealth. Canada ranks first in world production of asbestos, nickel, zinc, and silver and has significant production of copper, iron, molybdenum, lead and other mineral commodities. During the past decade Canada, like many other western countries, has undergone dramatic economic and social change. This trend is continuing, and its effect on the Canadian mining industry has produced conflicting results. From the industry's point of view, some of the more negative aspects include a steadily increasing involvement by government at municipal, provincial and federal levels through the imposition of Stricter controls, regulations and taxation policies, a rising tide of nationalism, which advocates public ownership of all natural resources, the spectre of inflation (currently increasing at the rate of 8% per year) and unsettled labour conditions.

Ever since the introduction of the first successful continuous mining machines some twenty odd years ago, there has been an obvious, and steadily increasing, need for some form of continuous haulage machine, or system to work with them. There is universal agreement that the continuous mining principle, and the various continuous mining machines in particular, have done a great deal for mining. However, coal mining men, who have the longest and broadest experience with them, agree that continuous miners do not truly mine continuously. In fact, their estimates, and actual studies, show that the real mining time of these machines ranges, on the average, from 20% or less to about 30% of the available shift time. Part of the failure of the continuous mining machine to mine continuously may be ascribed to breakdowns in its intricate machinery. Most of the failure, however, is blamed on a variety of other factors. Of these, there are two which are given particular blame: face haulage and roof control. The relative importance of the two as the major negative factor in continuous mining is a moot point. However, there is an extensive concensus that haulage is the number one problem. Roof problems and their control are inhibiting factors regardless of the type of mining or mining machines employed. But the truth of the matter is that a continuous mining machine, like any type of loading machine, whether underground or on surface, is only capable of mining or producing in direct ratio to the mineable, or loadable, material that can be kept ahead of it and equally, if not more, important, that can be taken away from it. During the formation of most epithermal precious metal deposits geochemical changes can be characterized by the introduction of large amounts of silica, minor amounts of sulfur, and trace quantities of gold, silver, and other metals. During the same process, large amounts of alkalis and alkaline earth elements, such as sodium and calcium, and sometimes aluminum are removed from the rocks. In deposits hosted by carbonate sedimentary rocks large amounts of carbonate may be removed before or during the silicification process. Small amounts of iron may be introduced by the mineralizing solutions, however, in most epithermal deposits this may be a relatively immobile component and is locally derived. The results of these changes are deposits consisting of up to 90 to 95 percent silica as quartz veins, breccias, silicified host rocks, and jasperoids containing a few percent sulfides, mostly pyrite, and a few parts per million gold and silver. Other minerals commonly but not always present are barite, arsenic, antimony, or mercury sulfides, and tellurides. Often gold shows a spatial, and therefore an apparent genetic, relationship to pyrite in primary ores. Alteration and gangue assemblages sometimes include sericite and/or adularia, and parts of the deposits may contain alunite and/or clay minerals. Even though the value of these deposits usually lies in their gold content, silver is usually present in larger quantities than gold (Romberger, 1990). Based on these general characteristics observed in a large number of epithermal deposits, together with processes occurring in active geothermal areas to which they are often genetically linked (Henley, 1985), a model is proposed whereby deposition occurs along a subhorizontal zone separating environments of contrasting chemistries. The upper environment is characterized by oxygenated acid waters and the deeper environment by a reducing near neutral aqueous system. The model describes the chemical changes occurring as a result of mixing and/or boiling within this zone. It builds upon the physical models proposed by Romberger (1988a) for disseminated gold deposits and Bonham (1988; 1989) for volcanic rockhosted deposits.

Despite the significant role of coal in the economic progress of nations, the occupational and health risks associated with its mining pose a major concern for industry stakeholders. The occurrence of roof collapses in coal mines remains a critical factor leading to substantial loss of life and financial damages for miners. Therefore, accurately predicting the roof fall rate (RFR) holds paramount importance. However, the uncertainty surrounding rock parameters in mines hinders the application of conventional methods to assess roof collapse rates in coal mines. To tackle the challenges associated with predicting roof fall rates in underground coal mines, this study proposes a novel solution by leveraging the Rock Engineering System (RES) method. The investigation is grounded in a dataset comprising 109 data points, encompassing crucial input parameters like depth of cover (DOF), primary roof support (PRSUP), intersection diagonal span (IS), mining height (MH), and coal mine roof rating (CMRR). In the model construction phase, 80% of the data (87 points) were utilized to build the RES model. A critical aspect of this study involves the evaluation of the RES model’s performance against alternative regression techniques, namely linear, power, exponential, polynomial, and logarithmic regression. This comparison was executed using the remaining 24 data points (20% of the dataset) for rigorous evaluation. Employing key statistical metrics such as mean square error (MSE), root mean square error (RMSE), and squared correlation coefficient (R2), the study systematically demonstrated the superior accuracy of the RES-based method compared to other approaches. In conclusion, the outcomes strongly support the efficacy of the RES method in predicting roof fall rates, not only in the specific case studied but also indicating promise for its application in other underground coal projects. This underscores the potential of the RES method as a reliable and versatile tool for forecasting roof fall rates in the complex and critical context of underground coal mining.

Introduction Our society is currently experiencing a change in civil philosophy toward US industrialization. We have become increasingly bent on the pursuit of a nirvanic state of zero risk. The money supply has become inversely proportional to its sources. And most mining companies, traditionally conservative, have become increasingly risk conscious. Rising taxes, high inflation, and decades of a steadily decreasing gross national product (GNP) - coincident with moral decay and disarmament - have eroded America's economic health. Psychology of US metal markets has shifted across the economic spectrum to disillusionment and discouragement. The sagging national economy, expanding governmental debt, and a backward mineral policy in concert with worldwide unrest and turmoil have caused great volatility in the metal markets. Congressional inaccessibility of US resources has contributed to its loss in strategic leadership and dependency on foreign suppliers and the common market. Large scale mining activities are now on the decline. And there is an overall slump in mineral exploration in this country. America now faces the sobering reality of almost total importation of 13 key mineral commodities and total dependence on foreign sources for five of them. There is a growing dependency on 21 of the 34 minerals vital to the US economy. And virtually everything needed can be imported directly from third world countries. Almost 85% of the free world's supply or production of vanadium, chromium, platinoids, manganese, and titanium - an essential to the aerospace industry - comes from South Africa. That country now plays a forefront position in supplying the West with minerals. The Soviets have become increasingly aware of this situation. They have made key moves in procuring for their own purposes major raw materials markets, particularly in South Africa. This is obviously threatening to the US' direction and brings about vulnerability to shortages and cutoffs. In spite of these developments and the overall change in the mining industry, there is good opportunity for growth ahead. The way has been paved for the smaller mining companies, particularly the more bullish of these. Smaller mining organizations possess a tight management and strong sense of direction. They can easily adapt to and cope with change. "Windows" that exist in the industry directly depend on a number of factors. These include the busi¬ness climate, market research and planning, management and human resources, applied appropriate technology, favorable hunting ground, and entrepreneurship. Mining as business Mining (and exploration) as a business is by its very nature highly speculative. It involves greater risk for a longer period of time than most other businesses. The entire mineral estate in the US continues to shrink. This is primarily because of various legislated wilderness measures. Consequently, the probability of finding an economic ore deposit in the US has decayed to less than 1%. Although the risk is high, the stakes far outweigh the gamble and are larger than most other businesses can offer. Mining properties, as investments or business opportunities, can provide effective hedges against long-term inflation because the real price for selected commodities, such as gold, may sometimes rise faster than inflation. Recessionary periods seem to provide the best climate for entering the mineral business or for a particular mining organization to expand its activities. Looking ahead and seizing opportunities during a depressed market will pay off. Property payments and royalties are likely to be lower. A waste management area of a copper zinc mine which is expected to be generating acid exceeding 1000 years is used as a research facility to develop a passive treatment approach to decommissioning the site. One of the processes proposed to be implemented in a lake with a one million cubic metre volume is biological polishing. To determine the expected performance of the process, model is constructed from experimental data collected in the lake. The model results and the field data represent a weak fit, but the discrepancies are useful indicators of key factors affecting the process, such as iron cycling.

Laguna del Rey is the name of a dry lake bed located in the State of Coahuila, Mexico in a semi-desertic terrain typical of the basin and range physiography. Química del Rey, S.A., a subsidiary of Industrias Peñoles, has been producing sodium sulphate since 20 years ago, from brines pumped from the sub-surface of the present playa. The spent brine is used as raw material for the production of magnesium oxide. An extensive, lenticular deposit is found just below the playa. It consists mostly of glauberite (sodium-calcium sulphate) and blöedite (sodium-magnesium sulphate). The glauberite occurs as thin crystals oriented at random and leave many void spaces among them. These intercrystalline spaces are partly filled with mud, but the whole mass of the evaporite is still very porous. A brine that contains in solution ions of sodium, magnesium, sulphate and chlorine occupies the voids of the sponge-like evaporite body.

Commercial quality kaolin deposits occur in fluvial sediments in both central-eastern Georgia and in the eastern Amazon River area of Brazil. Distinctive coarse and fine particle size kaolin deposits are present in both areas; they have many remarkable similarities for mineral deposits occurring at such wide geographic separation. Industrial, mineralogical, crystalline, and chemical resemblance of the coarse and fine kaolin deposits from the two areas will be described in detail. Knowledge of similarities of the Brazilian clays to those which have dominated world production in Georgia will help to develop superior quality kaolin products for world use in paper, paint, plastic, ceramic, and other applications.
