Here we read where the mighty Sampson removed the pillars from beneath the prison house causing the collapse of the structure resulting in his own death along with the deaths of the 3,000 Philistine occupants. Our problems at the Mi Vida Mine differ somewhat from those of Sampson of old, in that it is our aim first to remove the pillars and get out from under the back before the "house falls in" and, secondly, to remove the pillars without the lose of a single life or without even a single casualty. Sanshandao Gold Mine is the only undersea metal mine in China. To deal with the collapse and pumping of stopes and roadways caused by complex ore-rock occurrence conditions, the mine conducts filling and sealing of some areas, and the remaining ore reserves will be mined after treatment. Therefore, it is urgent to evaluate the stability of rock masses, fault fracture zones, and aquicludes during the secondary mining process. In this study, displacement and microseismic methods are employed to monitor rock deformation and fractures. Additionally, FLAC3D was used to simulate the process of secondary mining, reproducing the evolution of stress fields, displacement fields, seepage fields, and plastic zones at different mining stages. The combination of numerical simulation and on-site monitoring verification demonstrates that the deformation of surrounding rock presents a rapid growth at the initial stage of mining, followed by a gradual decrease in the growth rate, and finally tends to stabilize; the fracture zone area at the 151–159 exploration line on the − 320 m level (near the 7# and 8# stopes) exhibits poor stability, and monitoring measures should be strengthened; the deformation value of the aquiclude is less than the deformation value of I protection level in the Code for Design, the impact of secondary mining on the aquiclude is limited; fault and fracture zone deteriorate rock mass stability, and their impact is related to their spatial locations. Hanging wall fault has a more significant impact on the settlement of the aquiclude, while the footwall fracture zone has a greater impact on the development of the plastic zone.

Each year, US coal cleaning plants landfill or impound millions of tons of high-quality, fine-sized coal. This coal is not only difficult and expensive to capture during cleaning, but, if captured, can pose serious materials handling problems. The GranuFlow. Technology was developed and patented by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to address these problems. GranuFlow involves the addition of a coal binding agent such as an asphalt or heavy oil emulsion to coal to reduce moisture, dusting, and freezing and to improve the flow properties of the coal in bins and chutes (1, 2, and 3). When the emulsion is added before mechanical dewatering, the binding agent causes the formation of fine-sized coal agglomerates that dewater better than untreated coal. In addition, the binding agent increases the capture of ultra-fine coal in screen-bowl centrifuges. Previous work by DOE has also demonstrated that such treatment results in a significant reduction in dustiness and a reduced potential to freeze. To address concerns about the handling and combustion characteristics of GranuFlow treated coal, DOE performed a pilot-scale pulverization and combustion test (4). No problems were encountered during pulverization or combustion, and use of this fuel in a p.c. boiler was found to be feasible from a technical perspective. CQ Inc. has an exclusive license from DOE to market this technology and is currently performing a series of commercial demonstrations to determine if GranuFlow is both technically and economically viable.

The existence of resins in some coal deposits in various parts of the world has been known for many years. These resins vary considerably in chemical structure and properties. The resin that is found in Utah coal, however, is rather unique, and has properties particularly attractive for the manufacture of printing ink mastics and adhesives. This resin is a rather dark, very high melting point, low molecular weight hydrocarbon resin. Its typical properties are shown in Table I. Its largest use by far, has been in the printing ink industry. The history of Utah coal resin is interesting, but unfortunately one of disappointment and failure.

Longwall mining is popular in underground coal production in the United States due to higher production rates and safety concerns. Because of the extreme complexity, it is necessary to plan an adequate design to achieve a safe and efficient working place. The proper sizes of yield and abutment pillars and panels can be determined by simulation using numerical modeling techniques. By means of three-dimensional modeling, stresses to be imposed on the pillars, panels, gob, and powered supports can be analyzed. In this study, an initial three-dimensional finite element model was developed and then modified into four different models. Using these models, the numerical outputs of distributed stresses on three different sizes of yield pillars, three different sizes of panels, and two different sizes of abutment pillars were compared and analyzed to determine the most adequate pillar and panel sizes. Progressive failure theory based on the Hoek and Brown failure criterion was used to determine redistribution of stresses in the yielded and failed areas in the longwall mine.

"A pressing issue that has often been the topic of discussion in iron-making operations in India is the high content of alumina in the country’s iron ore deposits. The presence of alumina has hampered production by affecting slag fluidity, and thereby the hot metal quality. Iron ores from Indian mines are generally rich in hematite, with traces or small amounts of goethite/limonite, kaolinite, gibbsite and quartz reported from time to time. In day-to-day production, emphasis is placed on checking the chemical analysis of product samples, but the true solution to the alumina problem lies in estimating the mineralogy of the ore samples. We developed a mathematical model, based on singular value decomposition, to predict mineralogy from classical chemical analysis. We then used X-ray diffraction patterns, scanning electron microscope analysis, and grain counting with an optical microscope to determine actual mineral compositions and to test the values predicted by the model. The results indicate that with regular calibration, the model can be used as a simple, fast and effective tool to predict on a regular basis the mineralogy of multiple samples.IntroductionIndian blast furnaces use high-grade iron ores (as lumps or as sinter) and coke (obtained from the destructive distillation of coal) as raw materials for the production of high-quality hot metal to be converted into different steel products through the Linz- Donawitz process. The iron ores are mainly sourced from the Singhbhum region of Odisha and Jharkhand states, the Bailadialla region of Chattisgarh state and the Bellary region of Karnataka and Goa states, and are mainly classified based on size as (1) lump ore (fed directly into blast furnaces), (2) fines (converted into sinter/pellets and fed to blast furnaces) and (3) slimes (< 0.15 mm; currently dumped in huge slime ponds). Any variation in the quality of the ores supplied results in variations in the production trends of hot metal."

Homestake Mining Company has identified a significant native sulfur resource at its Cinnabar Canyon prospect in Mono County, California. Elemental sulfur occurs as replacements, fracture coatings and breccia fillings in a thick sequence of Miocene-Pliocene intermediate volcanic rocks. The deposit extends along a northwest trending regional fault and measures approximately 900&apos; in width, at least 1800&apos; in length, and has a thickness in excess of 200&apos;. The deposit lies approximately 150&apos; below the surface and is covered by a silicified cap of volcaniclastic strata. The deposit has been delineated by rotary and core drilling. Utilizing a grade cutoff of 5% elemental sulfur, the delineated deposit has a probablelpossible resource of 16.1 million tons of ore averaging 17.9% elemental sulfur containing 2.57 million long tons sulfur. Assay grades within the resource area range up to 40% sulfur over a 40-foot intercept.

The accuracy and reliabil¬ity of forecasting determine the soundness of capital investment decisions and, ultimately, determine the value of the firm.

Rock salt has been mined by the solution method for many years in many countries. Attempts have been made in the past in Canada and various other countries to produce potash by the&apos; same method. However, only Kalium Chemicals Limited (1) has been successful, possibly because the conditions in Saskatchewan are the most favorable conditions to be found so far for the development of a solution mining method for potash. There are significant differences in solution mining of rock salt and solution mining of potash. First, rock salt deposits are relatively pure in respect to soluble minerals, whereas potash is never found in the pure state and contains Substantial amounts of other soluble minerals, particularly rock salt. In comparison to rock salt, much less potash is dissolved and brought to the surface for the same amount of water circulated through the orebody. The amount of water to be evaporated per unit weight of product is a major difference. Much greater amounts of water must be evaporated when producing potash and the treatment of the brine is more complicated because other dissolved salts have to be separated. Secondly, the rock salt deposits, particularly the domes, are much thicker. Bed thickness is of prime importance because it determines the yield of a well and consequently the economics of the process. Furthermore, as rock salt provides a strong roof structure, larger cavities can be developed and this prolongs the life of the rock salt well.

Roasting of refractory gold ores has the primary goal of oxidizing sulfides and organics to improve gold recoveries prior to leaching. Commercial installations currently utilize bubbling and circulating fluidized beds. The principle of flash roasting is aimed at a more cost effective method of whole ore roasting for large throughput applications. Results of pilot plant testing and scale up to commercial design will be discussed in further detail in this paper.

The environment for process engineers today is very different from 20 years ago. A multi-lift benching cut-and-fill mining method was adopted at Asamera Minerals (U. S.), Inc.&apos;s Cannon Mine to balance the goals of high productivity and near 100 percent recovery with the need to minimize subsidence. High strength backfill was required to provide effective long-term overburden support and safe working conditions during the pillar recovery operations. Operational designs were evaluated using numerical modeling to predict global mine stability and backfill strength requirements. These models incorporated sequential mining of primary stopes, backfilling of primary stopes and recovery of pillars, and have been transferred to the mine operations group for use in evaluating different production sequences. The modeling has provided a better understanding of the structural response of the mine to excavation of the primary stopes and removal of the pillars. Predictions about the transfer of overburden weight to the abutments, pillars and cemented fill pillars have provided a criterion to evaluate mining plans and production sequence. Comparison of these predictions with actual mine structural performance has developed confidence in the design of the mining method and in the geomechanical design methods being employed. Primary mining of the B-North zone is nearly complete, and the stopes have been generally stable, as projected in the original design. California’s San Diego County Water Authority provides a safe and reliable water supply to more than 3.3 million residents through twenty-four member agencies. The 2nd Aqueduct pipelines, a critical infrastructure consisting of three large-diameter pipelines, are susceptible to natural threats including streambed erosion, channel migration, and seismic hazards within the 3,840-foot-long Moosa Canyon segment of the alignment. A state-of-good repair, hazard mitigation, and resiliency project is progressing to ensure uninterrupted water supply. For each pipeline, a segment will be replaced by tunneling. A high-level project development approach is presented, focusing on alternative selection, environmental and geotechnical considerations, and operations and maintenance constraints.

A procedure is presented for ranking hazardous waste sites for remedial decisions, and an example with application to mining waste sites is discussed. Typical contaminant concentrations are calculated from field data. Exposure indices that compare these measured concentrations with allowable limits are then computed. The limits are selected to protect both the health of humans (for both carcinogen and noncarcinogen effects) and the health of key organisms in the ecological food web. The additive exposure index for a site, defined as the sum of all contaminant-specific exposure indices, is then used in ranking the sites and assigning each a priority for remedial action. One key source of uncertainty in the process is the estimation of a typical site concentration from data that include values reported as "below certified reporting limit" (BCRL). This uncertainty is compounded in the additive exposure index and therefore may have a substantial effect on the assignment of remediation priority. A general approach is presented for incorporating consideration of BCRL data into uncertainty evaluation when assigning remediation priority designators to hazardous waste sites.

Adverse water-quality impacts of uranium mining and milling activities on both surface- and ground-water resources in the Grants Mineral Belt have recently been documented.1 In some cases, the impacts resulted in violation of existing regulations and license conditions and have endangered public health. Unfortunately, industry-sponsored ground-water monitoring programs do not adequately record the actual impacts of mining and milling on ground-water quality.

Project scheduling is a deterministic technique utilizing single estimates of activity durations. In reality, activity durations are stochastic and can be better represented by probability distributions. This paper describes the development and utilization of a project scheduling simulation which combines analytical scheduling with stochastic activity durations. The purpose is to provide a method to analyze the sequencing of mining production processes and predict the effect of any planned changes. The simulation is demonstrated through realistic examples, such as longwall face-to-face transfer sequencing and the effect of varying advance rates on longwall development sections. Statistical data, to make more informed production decisions, are generated in the form of project activity/path criticality and project duration distributions.

Locus Mining is working side-by-side with a prestigious iron ore company to evaluate the addition of Locus ESG-friendly green flotation reagents with the primary goal of improving recovery and grade. In this paper, we will focus on the cationic reverse flotation application. The most “established industry” reagents for cationic reverse flotation are amine as the collector, starch as the depressant, and in some cases frothers are also used (among them MIBC, pine oil, others). Here, we evaluate the synergies of different classes of eco-friendly biosurfactants and industry-standard reagents during the cationic reverse flotation method. Exploratory research was done first with an analog sample under different pHs, eight different biosurfactants with starch and no-starch, and a customized DOE was used to perform 145 microflotation tests. The results show Separation Efficiency from 20% (baseline) to 50% (biosurfactant), and Selectivity from 3.27 (baseline) to 5.67 (biosurfactant). Optimized result conditions were then applied to the iron ore samples received from our client to perform flotation tests on a Denver Lab cell. Similar results were obtained by improving Separation Efficiency and Selectivity, which corroborate with the previous work.

"The Freeport-McMoRan Sierrita Crystal Plant produces Copper (II) Sulfate Pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O) through a series of cooling crystallizers. In this process, high supersaturation and unwanted spontaneous nucleation promote fine crystals. Seeding through recycled crystal classification can manipulate the crystal size distribution (CSD) for larger crystals. Proper selection of the crystallizer for seeding can prevent spontaneous nucleation and promote final crystal size. This study shows when seeding temperature is closer to the crystallizer temperature, suspension densities in the crystallizers are promoted and overall CSD shifts to a larger size of crystals. INTRODUCTION Figure 1 shows an overview of the crystallization process. The in-plant feed flow, called Pregnant Mother Liquor (PML), enters the first crystallizer and is subsequently cooled through a series of four crystallizers. Specific temperatures are targeted for each crystallizer to ensure the crystallization process is operating within the metastable zone (MSZ). The discharged flow from crystallizer #5 then enters two cyclones. The overflow from the cyclones contains smaller crystals providing seed crystals for crystallizer #5. The underflow from the cyclones begins the drying process. The overflow from crystallizer #5 enters cyclone #3 for removal of fine crystals and seeding purposes. The underflow from cyclone #3 has the capability to provide seed crystals for crystallizer #1 or crystallizer #2. The overflow leaves the system as Spent Mother Liquor (SML). Undersize crystals dissolve into the PML and return back to crystallizer #1.THEORIES AND METALLURGICAL TESTS Seeding requires an understanding of the crystal size, solution temperature and amount of crystals that enter the crystallizers (1). For the seed crystal size, classified crystal seeds can prevent fine crystals returning back into the system which eventually leads to excessive agglomeration (2). Proper selection of the crystallizer can ensure seeding at an appropriate temperature. Seeding at a temperature much lower or higher than the saturation temperature promotes spontaneous nucleation. Typically, seeding between 4-5°F below the saturation temperature is acceptable (5). A general rule of thumb is to add the seed crystals at the temperature between the solubility curve and the metastable zone. An experiment conducted by Mettler-Toledo AutoChem, Inc. indicates seeding close to the solubility curve rather than the metastable zone promotes a lower supersaturation and nucleation rate but yields a higher growth rate and a greater number of larger crystals (1). The amount of seed crystals can not only change the suspension density but also narrows the width of the MSZ in the crystallizers. An experiment conducted by Jaroslav Nyvlt reports with the crystals absent, the maximum allowable undercooling is 6.3 degrees at a cooling rate, 5°C/hour. With the presence of crystals, it narrows the MSZ width to 2.2 degrees (4). Industrial crystallizers normally operate at suspension densities between 15% and 25% by mass. When suspension densities are lower than 15%, it increases the risk of primary nucleation and the probability of incrustations; on the other hand, if the suspension densities are greater than 25%, it can cause a greater attrition rate and increase the probability of deposits (6). Moreover, operating suspension densities between 15% and 25% are also sufficient to minimize supersaturation rate which promotes crystal growth over nucleation (2, 6)."
