Recent studies conducted at Virginia Tech have shown that ultrafine coal particles can be selectively coagulated and separated from mineral matter without the use of traditional agglomerants or flocculating agents. This technique utilizes hydrophobic interaction forces to induce coagulation of coal particles, while particles of mineral matter are dispersed using pH control. After selective coagulation, the coal coagula can be recovered by a sedimentation technique. In the present work, factors such as pH, particle size, and solids concentration have been examined. A wide range of coal samples have been successfully upgraded using this technique.

The Musaimeer pump station and outfall project (MPSO) is in Doha Qatar. This technical paper will discuss and explain the three major stages of geotechnical investigation employed. Stage one the tender geotechnical data and how this was used to design the TBM and identify various areas of risk. Stage two was the selection of supplementary geotechnical investigation methodologies. Stage three was the geotechnical investigation by specialist equipment installed on the TBM and providing further data on a real time basis as the TBM was advancing. Analysis of all the data will be provided along with the lessons learned.

The titanium dioxide pigment industry in the United States has always relied to varying degrees on imported titanium concentrates. Dependence on foreign ilmenite was especially high (generally over 85% of consumption) until 1942, when large-scale U.S. production of ilmenite began, and has since ranged from 12% to 47%. Rutile import reliance was generally in the 45% to 80% range until the early 1960's, when increased use in the chloride pigment process raised dependence on imported rutile to over 90% in most years since 1963. Import reliance of zircon, obtained almost entirely as a byproduct of titanium mineral production, has generally ranged from about 30% to 65% of consumption. This paper will examine the history of U.S. sources of these heavy mineral commodities, and will discuss the potential U.S. future supply in view of changing industrial uses and processes and the anticipated development of new heavy-mineral-sand processing operations, such as those at Richards Bay in the Republic of South Africa and in Sierra Leone.

Fine coal cleaning by froth flotation has become common practice in the U.S. with more than 80,000 tons treated in this way per day. In spite of this large tonnage, developments in the automatic control of coal flotation circuits have lagged significantly behind those for mineral systems. One reason such developments have been limited is that instruments have not been available for the on-line measurement of carbon or ash and another critical variables in coal slurries. A second reason is that the influence of the operating variables on coal flotation has not been completely understood. During the last few years some of the required instrumentation has been developed and an improved knowledge of the flotation process itself has occurred through mathematical modeling; as a result certain control strategies for coal flotation are beginning to emerge. This paper attempts to evaluate several control strategies using a detailed flotation dynamic simulator, DYNAFLOAT. After constructing a process matrix for the system of interest, promising alternatives for linking manipulated and controlled variables have been analyzed. In order to develop combined grade and recovery control strategies, the authors found it necessary to construct a grade/recovery map with the aid of the simulator to drive the system to known final, feasible grade/recovery operating conditions. Finally, an advanced strategy which uses an on-line model to identify disturbances and take control actions is proposed.

The precise definition of an ultimate or economic pit has, over the years, received much attention in the literature on the subject of mine planning. Unfortunately, relatively little has been published in the area of pit sequencing and scheduling--an aspect which is typically of much greater economic significance both during the life of a mining operation, as well as in the evaluation of an exploration project. This paper discusses an overall mine planning methodology with emphasis on the design of an optimal sequence of pit expansions or phases. Although the concepts given are not new, it is hoped that some practical suggestions will be made. The paper will also describe graphical techniques which have been found useful in comparing the merits and impacts of alternate planning strategies and production schedules.

For several years iron ore processing plants, located in the northern U.S. experienced seasonal decreases in the grinding efficiency of their primary autogenous mills. Kawatra and Eisele (1992) studied this phenomenon in an operating plant and characterized it in terms of specific energy consumption (Fig. 1) and production of critical size material (Fig. 2). Critical size material is defined as ore that is too small to be effective grinding media and too large to be ground. This data showed that both specific energy consumption and critical size production increased during the winter months. The increased energy consumption was in part a result of an increase in the viscosity of the mill pulp at colder pulp temperatures. However, viscosity could not fully explain the changes in critical size production. These changes are most likely due to changes in the breakage characteristics of the ore. Other studies were also conducted to determine if thermal and physical properties of iron ore changed at colder temperatures. These are summarized below:

The Technology Application Center, in conjunction with the U.S. Bureau of Mines Liaison Program, is studying the use of Landsat data for the monitoring of coal surface mine reclamation activities. Landsat may provide sufficient information to reduce the number of on-site inspections now required. The focus of the project has been the Navajo Coal Mine located in north- western New Mexico and operated by Utah International, Inc. On October 15, 1977, a field team recorded spectral measurements at the mine during the time of Landsat's overpass and a corresponding aerial photographic flight. Training sets were selected from the ground and aircraft data representing vegetated, graded, ungraded and natural environments. A supervised classification of the data was performed by the Stanford University Remote Sensing Laboratory then correlated to aerial photos and mine maps. The results, to date, have been very encouraging.

The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the 12th MPD Student Poster Contest on March 2, 2022, during the MINEXCHANGE 2022 SME Annual Conference & Expo. The event showcased the work of 32 graduate and undergraduate students from U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when the students submitted one‐page abstracts for judging. In February, they prepared and presented posters that explained their research, and each student had five minutes to explain their research to a panel of judges during the conference. Recognizing the students’ efforts in working hard on their research topics and setting aside time to complete the necessary steps to enter the poster contest, the MPD provides monetary rewards to all participants. For graduate students, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, and third through seventh places $200 each, and for undergraduate students, first place receives $1,000 and second place $500. The main authors of nonplacing entries receive $125 each. Participation in the contest includes a free ticket to the MPD Luncheon, where the winners are announced.

Specialty silica materials, as defined in this chapter, are rocks that consist predominantly of silica (SiO2) and are produced as chunks, round pebbles, and sawed or trimmed blocks and other shapes for nonconstruction applications. The rock types include quartzite, sandstone, novaculite, flint, chert, and vein quartz. Other terms used commercially include jasper, silex, lascas, and rock crystal. In its publication, Minerals Yearbook, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) reports the production and consumption of some specialty silica materials under several headings. Quartzite, sandstone, and novaculite used in abrasive applications are addressed by the USBM under Abrasive Materials. Lascas, a type of vein quartz used in growing synthetic quartz crystals and in fusing applications, is discussed under Quartz Crystal. In the USA, miners are at higher risk for work-related disorders that could precipitate an opioid prescription, injury-related opioid prescriptions, and opioid overdose. We aimed to support prevention of these outcomes with an “opioid hazard awareness” miner safety training module. In January and February 2020, the training module was embedded within required mining safety and health training for stone, sand, and gravel miners in Massachusetts (USA). Training impact and reception were assessed with a pre- and post-training survey of trainee characteristics, training content knowledge, and attitudes. Over 800 miners were trained and over 600 responded to surveys. We found statistically significant improvements in opioid risk factor knowledge and knowledge of resources to help a coworker. Nonstigmatizing attitudes were high both at baseline and following the training. The training was perceived as relevant and useful by trainees. Improving opioid hazard awareness in high-risk worker populations has potential to reduce opioid dependence and downstream impacts including overdose death. Employer injury-prevention efforts should be reinforced while worker health and safety training enhances awareness of opioid-related harms and prevention strategies for miners and other high-risk worker populations.

Although mineral commodities used to play and still play a very crucial role in the development of civilization over the centuries, their extraction, transportation, transformation and use are at present sources of great concern in terms of sustainability. Some of the most discussed environmental problems are in fact closely related to the utilization of minerals as materials and fossil fuels. The paper analyses the origins of sustain-ability weakness of mineral supply through Environmental Economics models, which have interpreted the phenomena of pollution and non-renewable resource depletion as a market failure. Conventional market tools have proved to be unable to perform an optimal allocation of those resources that are priceless or have open access. An external intervention is needed in order to reduce the excessive exploitation of environmental and natural resources. Some of the solutions proposed by policymakers and subsequently implemented by governments are briefly considered and the achieved results are discussed. In several cases the public intervention, where the attempt was to restore the sustainability conditions, has failed. Restrictive environmental protection regulations have resulted in severe limitations to the mining activity, without, on the other hand, achieving the expected results in terms of sustainability. Some of these regulations instigate unfair international competition practices among those producers who do care about the environment, but who have high production costs, and those who supply cheap raw material but whose low costs hide heavy environmental impacts. Nowadays, most of the world?s supply of minerals is being produced in developing countries, with severe global environmental impacts. As effective tools for monitoring the problem, sustainable development indicators could be used by policymakers to duly associate the comprehensive environmental impacts for each mining product, depending on its origin and extraction history.

The environmental demands on the mining industry coupled with rising production costs have created a need for a low cost sludge removal system. The HYDRA* system meets these demands by offering a unique means of removing settled solids from the bottom of a clarifier or a thickener. This underflow system combines experience and proven concepts to form a low cost sludge removal system. The HYDRA system incorporates a flexible design that can be adapted to any settling area. The components are readily available and cost less than a conventional clarifier or thickener. Existing technology developed by preparation engineers provides for retrieval and recovery of mine preparation plant refuse. However, past retrieval methods have been extremely costly. The HYDRA system, because of its low cost, makes the complete process of retrieval and recovery economically feasible. This allows wasted resources to be converted to a saleable product.

Bayan Obo ore contains mainly bastnaesite, monazite and associated iron, fluorite, calcite, dolomite, barite, and trace amount of columbite. Due to its complex mineral compositions and similar mineral properties, it is difficult to separate and obtain rare earth and fluorite concentrates with high purity by conventional magnetic separation and flotation. In this paper, a stepwise magnetic separation process comprised of wet permanent magnetic separation (PMS), wet electromagnetic separation (EMS), and superconducting magnetic separation (SCMS) was proposed to pre-concentrate iron, rare earth, and fluorite minerals from Bayan Obo ore. The results showed that iron, rare earth, and fluorite preconcentrates with high purity and low impurity content could be achieved, which might be helpful to shorten the technological process and improve the separation efficiency for the subsequent flotation of iron, rare earth, and fluorite minerals.

he need in the mineral industry to treat increasingly larger tonnages has caused a demand for larger installations. In order to limit the size of these installations, it was necessary to build machines with larger capacities or production output. With this aim in mind, WEMCO Division developed the No. 120 WEMCO-Fagergren Flotation Cell in 1967. These large cells have been compared to conventional smaller cells from the standpoint of metallurgical performance, investment costs, power requirements and maintenance requirements in many plants throughout the world. Figure 1 illustrates the size difference of the No. 120 when compared with the No. 66. All results to date indicate the large No. 120 cell surpasses the smaller machines in all categories.

8.1 INTRODUCTION Several methods currently exist by which gold may be recovered from a pregnant leach liquor. Two of these methods are discussed in this chapter, the Merrill-Crowe (zinc cementation) process and the carbon adsorption process. These two methods represent the most frequently used techniques for gold extraction and are, -in fact, used almost exclusively in U.S. heap leaching operations. Because of the efficiency and ease of use of these two methods, it is extremely likely they will continue to be quite prevalent within the gold mining industry in years to come. The remainder of this chapter includes information on the history of the two processes, descriptions of the actual processes, criteria to consider in selecting a recovery process, and commercial design and construction considerations for both of the gold recovery methods. As with other chapters in this book, some fairly technical information is presented for the benefit of those readers needing a greater level of detail. However, the overall intent of the chapter is to provide an overview of the processes likely to be used in gold extraction, thus giving the reader a firm basis for more technical research into the topic, should this be needed. 8.1.1 History of Zinc Cementation During the late 18901s, zinc cementation was introduced for the precipitation of gold and silver from cyanide solutions. This occurred at about the same time as the introduction of the cyanidation process, the history of which is recapped in Chapter 1. The initial cementation process involved introduction of a gold-bearing cyanide solution onto a bed of zinc shavings. It proved to be quite inefficient because the reaction rate was very slow. The zinc quickly became "passive", inhibiting further gold deposition. Shortly after this first introduction, zinc precipitation was improved by adding a lead salt (usually lead nitrate) to the zinc. This allowed a zinc-lead couple to form on the surface of the shavings, eliminating passivation of zinc surfaces and thereby allowing continued deposition of gold. India’s most extensive renewable energy expansion program targets 280 GW of solar energy by 2030. Due to the massive generation of photovoltaic waste (expected 34,600 T by 2030), stringent recycling effort to recover metal resources from endof- life PVs is required for resource recovery, circular economy, and subsequent reduction in the environmental impact. The present study investigates the recycling potential of end-of-life silicon solar modules. The feed characterization reveals that most of the values in PV modules are concentrated in the frame (pure Al), Si wafer (72–84% Si, 9–12% Al, and 0.13–0.71% Ag), and electrical connections (Cu wire coated with Sn). The Si and Ag values in the feed were beneficiated using water fluidization, and concentrate with 90% Si and 2% Ag was attained in the underflow concentrate. Ag values were recovered in the form of AgCl by leaching in nitric acid and precipitation. After the purification step, the residue containing 99% Si can be further utilized to fabricate Si wafer and Al-Si alloy. The preliminary cost estimations suggest that the proposed process is economically viable for the recycling of solar panels with the maximum value generated from the AgCl precipitate followed by Al panels and Si wafers.

Throughout the history of the development of mechanical conveyor systems, it has always been an established condition that loads are received at one end of a single-belt conveyor and discharged at the other end, in a point-to-point, manner. In systems designed for the continuous transport of granular materials, vertical or horizontal changes in; direction have always necessitated two or mope single-belt conveyor units, with a corresponding number of motors, assemblies and attendant mechanical and human or electronic controls. Besides these high-cost factors, every change in the system's direction also calls for a transfer point that involves a drop-back of the material from one level to another with some loss of the material and, in many cases, unwanted additional granulation. Where changes in the location of the discharge point are wanted, the conventional single-belt conveyor must either be replaced by a shorter or longer unit or additional units purchased and installed, or existing units rearranged. This can take days or weeks, and involve special expenditures as well as loss of valuable production time.

"Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have studied the influence of headgate side ventilation controls near the longwall start-up room on the formation of explosive gas zones (EGZs) in underground coal longwall bleeder ventilated gobs. In a project funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers developed a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model to study the formation of methane-air mixtures in the gob, start-up room, and bleeder entries. The relative change in size and location of EGZs are examined in response to ventilation controls in the headgate side bleeder entries near the start-up room. Modeling suggests that adjustments to the ventilation controls can be made to minimize the size of the EGZ. However the EGZ may form in or around active working areas regardless of the ventilation control settings. Research found regulators on the crosscuts into start-up room and first entry inby can force air into to crosscuts outby the start-up room causing more air to flow through the gob. INTRODUCTION Underground longwall mine ventilation systems may operate with either a bleeder ventilated gob or a progressively sealed gob. Bleeder ventilated gobs must meet the standards for safe operation of the bleeder system by examining bleeder system effectiveness. As defined in the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Program Policy Letter (PPL) No. P13-V-12 (MSHA 2013), the pillared area or gob is “any area where a reduction in pillar size has occurred during retreat mining” and includes the “caved and broken material, the interstices within the caved material, and the open spaces surrounding the caved material.” The PPL further states that the intended purpose of ventilating the gob is “to protect active workings from the hazards of methane accumulations …” The requirements for operating a bleeder system as stated in The United States Code of Federal Regulations (CFR 2013) Title 30 §75.334(b) is to pass ventilation air though the gob “and to continuously dilute and move methane-air mixtures [from the gob] away from active workings and into a return air course …” where the concentration cannot exceed 2 percent methane (CFR 30 § 75.323). Further clarification of the bleeder system as described in the PPL states the following: “A bleeder system includes the area from which pillars are wholly or partially recovered, bleeder entries, bleeder connectors, and all associated ventilation control devices that control the air movement through the area. Bleeder entries are air courses designed and maintained as part of the bleeder system.”"

A laboratory apparatus (shield dust simulator) was designed and constructed to simulate the dust generated during the advance of longwall hydraulic roof supports, or shields. The objective of the study was to develop a tool that could be used to test the hypothesis that foam applied to a mine roof prior to a shield advance could be used to reduce the respirable dust generated during shield advances. This paper will outline the design parameters for the development of the system, as well as describe baseline testing of coal and limestone dust. Results show the average instantaneous respirable dust concentrations that occurred during simulated shield advance. Confidence intervals were calculated from the instantaneous respirable dust data to determine the repeatability of the data produced by the device. INTRODUCTION During longwall mining, miners can be exposed to respirable dust that is generated during the advance of hydraulic roof supports or shields. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers have conducted numerous surveys of longwall mining operations, benchmarking the operating practices and dust control measures in use. It has been determined that the shields are responsible for 27% of the respirable dust that is generated on the longwall face [1]. The dust generated by the shield advances ranks second, next to the longwall shearer which is accountable for 43% of the respirable dust generated on the longwall face. The respirable dust generated during the advance of the shields can be a significant contributor to the respirable dust exposure of the mining personnel operating at the longwall face, especially since some of this dust is generated in the walkway. Control systems designed to reduce the dust levels generated during the shield advance have the potential to greatly reduce the respirable dust exposures of the personnel downwind of these activities. One control technology to decrease the dust generated by the shield advances would be to apply a layer of foam to the forward shield-roof interface prior to the shield advance [2]. The blanketed layer of foam would interact with the material located on the top of the shield during the advance, preventing a portion of that dust from becoming entrained in the mine air. This layer of foam would be applied using a foaming nozzle located on the longwall shearer body that would spray foam on the roof surface as the shearer passed. Substantial laboratory work has been completed to determine the feasibility of this type of foam application. NIOSH engineers have classified the various characteristics of foaming agents, using foam expansion ratio and drainage as important properties, as well as developed the mechanical systems required to apply the foam safely to the mine roof [2, 3]. The construction of an apparatus that could simulate the mechanical interaction between the dust-laden shield top and mine roof was necessary to adequately test the hypothesis that foam could be an appropriate control. A team of engineers designed and constructed a shield dust simulator system allowing for in-house testing prior to a full-scale field investigation.

The use of the walking dragline as a stripping tool has increased dramatically in the past two decades. The reasons for its increased popularity and some historical background on its introduction into the mines are given in a recent paper by Learmont. (l)* The history need not be recounted here except to show the trend to longer booms which has accompanied the growth in machine size. Figure 1 shows the change in maximum operating radius on Bucyrus-Erie machines which has occurred over the years and Figure 2 shows the corresponding change in maximum boom lengths. Reference 1 also presents some of the reasons for expecting this trend to longer booms to continue. There are many design parameters affected by the increase in boom lengths; swing power, hoist and drag rope lengths, and drum capacity, to list just a few. The purpose of this paper is to discuss only the structural implications of using longer booms. As in the design of any structure, the various facets of boom design are interrelated and a process of optimization between them must be worked out either by evolution or by conscious iterative effort. The decisions we have reached about such things as material selection, structural arrangement, and applicable criteria, have not come into being overnight but represent instead many years of design experience and a fair amount of recent concentrated analytical effort. In the following pages an attempt will be made to first, state those decisions, second, explain how we arrived at that particular result; and third, describe what we expect future developments to be which might influence us to change those decisions.
