Any effectuation of a viable program of air pollution control will' require a basic understanding of the chemistry of atmospheric processes, the fate and migration of SO2, and the ultimate health effects of the sulfur oxides themselves. The migration and ultimate fate of Sop discharged into the atmosphere will be discussed with particular emphasis on the various conflicting views and how these relate to our present emission control regulations. Our present lack of knowledge is a severe detriment, and consideration will be given to those particular areas where future research may best be directed to provide the answers to a number of perplexing questions.

Until recently, the application of the Jameson Cell technology in North America has been restricted to minerals processing. Recently, laboratory, pilot-plant and full-scale testing has been conducted to assess the Jameson Cell's ability to effectively treat fine coal. Based on the data, carrying-capacity relationships have been developed. In addition to its operational simplicity, the Jameson Cell has the ability to provide a separation efficiency near the theoretical separation performance on the basis of ash rejection while achieving a relatively high throughput capacity Tie results obtained from the various fine coal cleaning applications in North America is presented in this publication.

The city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in southern Germany is located at a main transit road to Tyrol in Austria and suffers of a very heavy traffic load. Therefore, the Kramertunnel as a by-pass tunnel is built to release/mitigate the traffic through the city centre. The 3,600 m long single tube road tunnel is designed with a parallel but smaller emergency tunnel and with cross passages, fitted with single- and doublesided emergency bays, a vent shaft, and an intermediate ceiling to separate fresh air supply from the road traffic. The tunnel, concrete lined along its entire length provided the challenge to find smart formwork solutions for quick set-up, repositioning, setup and pouring. Three particularly specific sections are discussed in this paper.

Overview Coal production in the first half of 1982 remained near the high levels begun in mid-1981. Production then fell sharply during the latter part of the year due to recession-weakened demand. Even so, 1982 coal production was estimated at 756 Mt (833.4 million st), a record high that exceeded 1980's previous production record of 752.7 Mt (829.7 million st). Though 1982 coal production was substantially below industry expectations, the attained production represented a modest achievement in view of the recession's severity. In 1982, the gross national product declined 1.8%, its worst performance in 36 years. The recession, along with mild weather, improved energy efficiency, and conservation efforts caused the nation's energy use to drop 4.1%. With the iron and steel, construction, and auto industries experiencing production declines, industrial energy use fell 10.8%. The extent to which the nation's economic slump affected coal markets in 1982 varied: • total domestic coal use declined 3.4%; • exports remained strong for most of the year; • electric utility coal use declined for the first time in 25 years; • coal use at coke plants declined by one-third; and • coal use in other industrial sectors stayed surprisingly near the 1981 level. Coal Use Domestic coal use totaled 641.8 Mt (707.5 million st) in 1982,22 .9 Mt (25.2 million st) below the 1981 level. Nearly all the decline occurred at coke plants where use dropped to 37.1 Mt (40.9 million st) in 1982 from 55.3 Mt (61 million st) in 1981. The decline in all other industrial and electric utility coal markets was only 5.3 Mt (5.8 million st). Residential and commercial coal use increased 635 kt (700,000 st) to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) from 6.7 Mt (7.4 million st). Power generation decreased 2.3% in 1982, the first year since 1945 that output failed to increase. The decline was due to a drop in industrial demand. Electricity sales to residential, commercial, and other nonindustrial users increased slightly. But coal's competitive position stayed strong. Power generation from oil and natural gas fell 28.9% and 11.7%, respectively. Power generation from coal declined only 0.9%. Among the primary energy sources, coal fueled 53.2% of US electric power generated in 1982, compared with 52.4% in 1981. In 1982, US steel production declined to 66.1 Mt (72.9 million st), the lowest level in 50 years and down from 109.6 Mt (120.8 million st) in 1981. The reduced steel demand forced 13 coke plants to shut down. Coal Exports Coal exports in 1982 totaled 96.4 Mt (106.3 million st), 5.7 Mt (6.3 million st) less than in 1981. Despite the worldwide recession and above normal coal stockpiles in many countries, exports were higher than many expected. This showed the relatively strong US position in international coal trade. The US continued to export near-record coal tonnages despite increasingly competitive influences. These included an improvement in Australia's labor difficulties, the return of Polish coal to Western European markets, and lower oil prices. In 1982, US port facilities were improved and expanded, and more efficient methods for scheduling foreign vessels were implemented. As a result, high volume coal shipments to US ports were routinely loaded and dispatched unhampered by bottlenecks that plagued East Coast ports in 1981. This paper re-examines the mixing conditions in the collection zone of flotation columns. These have in the past been characterized with a single uniaxial dispersion coefficient, E. The relationship between E and column diameter, Dc, is examined based on residence time distributions (RTDs) in columns of Dc ranging from 5.lcm to 184cm. Results agree with published correlations in chemical engineering, i.e. E a Dc '" , Data explain why pilot columns display significant upgrading between the feed level and the interface, whereas plant columns do not. It also suggests that, for plant columns, the full collection zone (up to the interface) can be considered when calculating the residence time. A mathematical model considering two regions of different mixing was compared to the single E model. Both models adequately fitted measured age distributions inside the column and overall RTDs. Measured and simulated mixing characteristics are compared to those of flotation banks, using a tanks-in-series approach; banks of comparable mixing to columns are identified.

The current exploration boom in Central and South America shows no sign of abating and, if anything, is growing. This is despite an inevitable cooling in the recent frenzied buying of resource stocks on the Canadian exchanges which have funded much of the Latin American exploration. Several factors appear to be driving the boom. Firstly, the resource potentials in this vast under-explored regions are nothing short of phenomenal. Secondly, after decades of stifling nationalization and restrictions that stood in the way of foreign investment, especially in mining, emerging nations the world over now suddenly find themselves competing with each other to be the most attractive.

Located south of downtown Seattle, the Beacon Hill Station & Tunnels is the key section of the southern segment of Sound Transit’s proposed new LINK light rail system. This paper presents an overview of the design, which includes 4,300 ft of segmentally-lined bore twin tunnels and a deep mined station. With platforms located156 feet below grade, the station itself is only the second large-scale mined station in soil the US. Its complex geometry combined with variable soil conditions—sands, silt sand clays with slickensides—challenged the designer’s to come up with a SEM-based design that addresses the owner’s risk, cost and schedule concerns.

IBC Advanced Technologies, Inc. has developed ligands, ?amed SuperLig®, which have specific applications in the gold mdustry. These ligands use molecular recognition technology (MRT). One ligand has been developed to selectively recover gold and silver from tailings solutions and from pregnant Merrill-Crowe solutions. Another ligand removes free cyanide, _ th10cyanate, other cyanide species, as well as copper and other base metal cyanide complexes from leached gold-ore solutions. The development of these "species selective'' SuperLig® prod­ucts allows for the more efficient operation of gold recovery processes and opens up the possibility of the economic devel­opment of high-copper gold ores. The resulting gold eluate is a high grade and a high purity stream which will simplify the need for further refming. Engineered systems based on MRT consist of a few unit operations utilizing standard equipment and mate­rials of construction. The process is simple to operate, thereby lending itself to automated modular design, which is both eco­nomic to manufacture and to operate. Test results for the gold and cyanide-copper systems are presented in order to demonstrate the high selectivity and effi­ciency of MRT technology in recovering these species from solution. . IBC Advanced Technologies, Inc. (IBC) and Fluor Daniel, Inc. formed a strategic alliance in late 1994. The goal of the alliance is to combine IBC's scientific expertise in the MRT field with Fluor Daniel's engineering capabilities in the metal­lurgical industry. The Mission Mine is an open-pit copper mine located 18 miles south of Tucson, Arizona in the eastern foothills of the Sierrita Mountains. Mining is done on 40 foot benches using P & H 2100 shovels and 170-ton Terex trucks. Drilling is accomplished With two (2) Bucyrus-Erie 45R?s, one (1) Bucyrus-Erie 60R and two (2) Ingersoll Rand T-5?s. For secondary drilling. a Joy VCR-ISO truck mounted drill is used. The mine is currently operating 3 shifts/day, 7 days/week at 59,100 tons per day, with the mill receiving 28,500 tons per day. The management of the drilling and blasting program requires extensive record keeping in all phases of the operation. This is essential in order to evaluate different products and procedures.

Coal production in the Central Appalachian region has a long history, and it remains a major US coal-producing region. The coal industry consensus is that the region is in a state of decline as evidenced by the recent lower regional output. Are Central Appalachian coal reserves adequate for the region to continue as a major supplier of low sulfur coal? To answer that question, this paper focuses on the Central Appalachian coal reserve base estimates and production trends. Central Appalachian (CAPP) reserve evaluations face the difficulty that there are no publicly available databases that provide a thorough analysis of remaining CAPP reserves. Based on best available Energy Information Administration (EIA) data, a coal reserve estimate of 17.6 billion tons is developed. This estimate appears high according to industry perception. Recent United States Geological Survey (USGS), and other state agency coal reserve estimation projects are evaluated as alternative approaches to the re-serve estimation problem. Using the conclusions from these studies, the CAPP reserve base is estimated at 7.1 billion tons. Another perspective on the CAPP reserve base is provided by reserve holdings of major CAPP operating companies reported at 5.2 billion tons. A conceptual mining cost analysis indicates substantial price increases will be necessary to offset this deterioration in the economic viability of the reserve base.

Tungsten-containing ores are mined on all continents of the world. China is the world's largest producer and controls the world's largest reserves. The USSR, itself a sizeable producer, is estimated to be the world's largest consumer. The major use for tungsten in the noncommunist world is in production of cemented tungsten carbides for cutting, drilling, and wear parts. Other major uses include lamp wires, steels for tools, and armaments. Real tungsten prices have been in a general decline since 1977-1979 as the tungsten market undergoes basic and lasting structural changes.

The successful integration of overburden casting techniques into the mine production cycle can be an extremely cost effective use of explosives. The entire mining cycle revolves around the cast blasting and to be successful requires a great deal of planning and cooperation. Several operations of Cyprus Coal Company in the Appalachian coal fields have successfully integrated blast casting into their mine plan. This paper will detail the parameters and necessary controls to integrate an overburden casting program into a surface coal operation.

While a fleet of 100 t (110 st) haul trucks were busy removing overburden from the open pit mine in the distance, a host of dignitaries, including congressmen and California state representatives, gathered for Molycorp?s official groundbreaking ceremony at the Mountain Pass Mine on April 20. The mine, recognized as arguably one of the richest rare earths deposits in the world, is at the center of Molycorps? strategic ?Mine to Magnets? plan. It aims to secure America?s future supply of rare-earth-dependent technologies by developing a strong domestic rare earth industry. Molycorp identifies rare-earth-dependent technologies as those that cannot be produced without rare earth materials. The list of these technologies is long and growing. It encompasses everything from personal electronics and batteries for hybrid cars to permanent magnet generator wind turbines and national defense applications.

INTRODUCTON James Howden first secured an order for two Service Tunnel Boring machines in November 1986. These Tunnel Boring machines were 5.7 and 5.4 metres in diameter and the full length including back up was 215 metres. Manufacture commenced in December 1986 at the Glasgow factories of James Howden & Company with the deliveries to site of the machines in September 1987 and March 1988 respectively. In December 1987 two further orders were secured for the land running tunnels at 8.7 metres diameter. This paper presents some of the challenges in building tunnel boring machines for the Eurotunnel project between Britain and France. The general specifications of the Tunnel Boring machines and length of drives are shown in Appendix 1. DESIGN PARAMETERS The specification given by the Consortium TML on behalf of their client Eurotunnel cleary indicated that cutting of the face should be concurrent with the building of the precast concrete lining rings. In order to do this a telescopic machine was thought to be the best solution. Ground conditions were described as chalk marls of homogeneous nature with the possibility of friable areas and some revelling. Shortcut methods are commonly employed for estimating mining costs for prefeasibility studies. Most of these methods, however, are suitable for earliest stage studies or for internal discussion purposes only. The experts at InfoMine?s CostMine division recommend that any cost estimate completed for purposes of significant decisionmaking or for compliance with Canada?s NI 43-101 requirements be completed using a determinative itemized method. The same basic principles apply for an early stage, intermediate stage, or advanced stage estimate. The only difference is in the level of detail and effort employed. ? Based on the results of a completed resource estimate, an itemized cost estimate begins with development of a conceptual mine plan. Using a surface mine as an example, four elements are crucial no matter what level of study is initiated. Basic geometry of the ore deposit and waste material, with a determination of the expected ratio of waste to ore, a reasonable pit slope angle, possibly requiring the completion of geotechnical studies to predict the waste-to-ore ratio with certainty. ? Determination of the assumed ore and waste production rates. ? Locations of all ore stockpiles and waste dumps. ? Segmental haulage distances and gradients for ore and waste.

The Carlin Trend is North America's premier gold producing district. It is located in northeastern Nevada's Elko and Eureka Counties along a northwest trending belt about 65 km (40 miles) long and 8 km (5 miles) wide (Thorstad, 1989; Jones, 1989). This trend is the worldwide reference site for epithermal, sedimentary rock-hosted microscopic gold deposits. At least 19 deposits have been discovered to date, varying in size from 933 kg to 1.08 kt (30,000 to 35 million contained oz) of gold (Fig. 1). Newmont Gold Co. and its parent, Newmont Mining Corp., jointly constitute the largest mineral right holders in the district. They own or control more than 1000 km'- (386 sq miles) in and around the Carlin Trend and own all or part of 16 out of the 19 mines and prospects identified to date. Since the initiation of Newmont's exploration activities in the Carlin Trend in 1961, 2.24 kt (72 million oz) of cumulative gold resources have been identified. Cumulative production from all mines since the start-up of Newmont's Carlin mine in 1965 to the end of 1989 was about 202 t (6.5 million oz) (Jones, 1989). The incentive of sustained high gold prices and innovation in processing technology resulted in a significant acceleration of gold output over the last few years. Newmont Gold alone produced more than 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) in 1989. That is equal to 22% of the cumulative 1965 to 1988 output, and an almost 200% increase over its 1986 output.

This paper briefly reviews the historical development of the Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace Process, which was first applied commercially to the treatment of qarnieritic ores in New Caledonia in the mid-fifties. It describes various technological improvements introduced, since, in industrial plants or developed in pilot facilities where a wide variety of nickel oxide ores has been treated success- fully over the years. Major categories of ores are characterized. The effect of their physical and chemical properties on their performance in the electric furnace is discussed. The relationships between ore composition, ferronickel grade and slag composition are analyzed and their effect on slag and metal tapping temperatures, nickel recovery, and electrode voltage are discussed.

The interest in using halogens for extracting precious metals from ores has increased due to changes In ore characteristics, environmental concerns and regulations. The rediscovery of halogen leaching capability has been the topic of these and other writers1-30. Much work has been done on the performance of bromine, chlorine and iodine5-29. Of these, bromine and chlorine look most promising. Iodine is quite expensive and sometimes forms an Insoluble film on a precious metal surface22,23. Little experimental work has been published on the relative performance of bromine versus chlorine. The Pourbaix diagrams for the halide leach system (see Fig. 1-4) Indicates a significant stability advantage for bromine In forming complex ions with gold. This should result In greater extraction of gold under similar leach conditions and Is evaluated In this work. The regeneration of halogen from a spent leech solution is a critical requirement for an environmentally acceptable halogen leach process. Bromide can be oxidized In-situ to bromine ~ adding chlorine or ozone2,31. Bromide like chloride can be oxidized In an electrochemical cell to produce halogen on demand 13,15,17. Bromine clearly offers a number of possible regeneration pathways. This work strives to compare the relative ability of chlorine and bromine to extract gold from partially and fully oxidized ores. A commercially pressure oxidized sample was evaluated under a number of experimental conditions. The autoclave feed ore from the same mill was also evaluated after complete oxidation In a laboratory autoclave.

This paper presents a review of the grouting works of Line 2 of the Greater Cairo MetroSystem. The Nile River alluvial deposits underlying this ancient city provided for a challenging and sometimes difficult grouting project. Permeation grouting using state-of-the-art computerized grouting techniques, as well as extensive ground treatment by jet grout, was per-formed for soil consolidation and/or groundwater control. During the project, over 425,000m3 of ground was treated, requiring 1.4 million linear meters of drilling and PVC injection pipe, 54,000 m3 of bentonite cement and 230,000 m3 of chemical and mineral grout. In addition, over 70,000 m3 of ground was treated using the jet grout method. Relative to major international transportation projects, the grouting works for Line 2 of the Cairo Metro represent one of the largest worldwide grouting endeavors to date.
