Taboca Mining is one of the largest producers of tin in the world. In its pilot plant, significant amounts of a middling of 90% xenotime (YPO4) and 10% zircon (ZrSi04) are produced. Until now, these minerals of this ore body could not be separated successfully. This paper presents some aspects of the fundamentals of xenotime and zircon flotation with anionic (fatty acids) and cationic (amine acetate) collector, as well as the influence of the superficial leaching of the minerals with cold HCI and HNO3 on the floatability. The mineralogical studies showed that both minerals are optically liberated in -212+106 µm size fraction. Surprisingly, SEM analysis indicated that both xenotime and zircon contain very small inclusions (1-5 µm) of thorite (ThSiO4). On the other hand, zircon is fairly metamictizated giving rise to malacon. Zeta potential tests showed that the isoelectric points of xenotime and zircon correspond to a pH value of 4.5 and 4.7, respectively.The pretreatment with HCI and HNO3 displaced the isoeletric point (IEP) of the minerals to the left. The microflotation tests indicated that the floatability of both untreated and treated minerals are quite similar in the presence of the collectors studied in this work. Adsorption mechanisms are also suggested.

In the past 30 years, the research arena has changed significantly in all fields, mining included. The relative representation of the topics of research, how the research is performed, and who has performed the research have all changed significantly over these decades. Although there are a lot of subjective ideas concerning these changes, and there is a fair amount of anecdotal "analysis," there has been no actual study of these trends to verify the facts. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have tested the finite element code, UT3PC, with LaModel to evaluate their results using know case studies. The purpose of the testing was to demonstrate the usefulness and limitations of these programs in evaluating mine layout design. Both of these software packages are simple to use and free for public download. Their use by mine engineers, along with other tools, such as empirical methods, can enhance the assessment of a mine layout design. LaModel can model mining layout on a mine scale or, at least, on a multiple-panel scale. However, this software has limitations in calibrating to conditions at many coal mines in the western United States. The UT3PC software models smaller parts of a mine and is used to evaluate the design of pillars, shafts, or drifts; but the software calculates all components of the stress tensor and provides stresses, displacements, and safety factors throughout the model volume. The two codes are used to evaluate design of one known case, and UT3PC is used to evaluate another case. The results and approaches demonstrated in the testing are intended to aid mine engineers in evaluating site-specific problems and to show that these tools can provide useful information to the mine engineer in evaluating mine layout design.

The history of mineral processing in general and flotation in particular is long and has always been tied to mining methods of the day. Building on the ever-improving fundamental understanding of the underlying science, the most significant trend in flotation has been the putting into practice the learnings from trailblazers such as Professor Fuerstenau that has given the confidence that enabled an ever-increasing scale of operations. There is, however, doubt this ongoing trend is enough to maintain the economics against global trends such as that of falling grades, increasing mining costs, pressure on water supply and demand, rising energy demands needed for mineral processing, and a focus on whole of life value and mine legacy issues. In addition, we see that globally, the social license to operate for mining (and hence mineral processing) is far from secure and, at the very least, is under much more rigorous scrutiny. In this paper, we comment on the ramifications of broader uptake of more sustainable mining for mineral processing methods and address the specific question of whether recent progress in in-place recovery will lead to a timely breakthrough. The answer proposed is that this is possible in the next 10–20 years but in the meantime, the focus is just as likely to be on removal of waste (beneficiation) much earlier in circuits. Either way, mineral processing and flotation, as we know it, will change significantly.

In planning for the future, Nkana Division deepened the Mindola sub-vertical shaft which was commissioned in 1994 in order to access the 30 Mt of ore between 1274 and 1570 m levels. The Nkana Synclinorium which is estimated to contain 250 Mt of ore is being accessed from the vicinity of Central Shaft. These areas are being planned with the intention of maximizing the use of computers in geological modelling and mine design so as to overcome the inadequacies of manual planning techniques. As a result, there is an increased demand for quality output from the computerized mine planning system the division has been developing over the last few years. A new workstation comprising the Hewlett Packard HP 71 51100 MHz and a CRX graphics monitor was acquired in 1995 together with the LYNX (version 3.09 and version 4.0) Mine Modelling System. Currently the workstation is being used for geological modelling and mine design for the Zerofold at Central Shaft and the Mindola mining at depth project. AutoCAD and Mine Works Planner have been added to the sys- tem configuration. Mine Works Planner is likely to replace Lo- tus123 for mine scheduling tasks. Computer applications in the area of mine planning at Nkana has led to considerable time savings and improved efficiency in areas formerly performed manually and has allowed speedy processing of data that would otherwise have proved too time consuming. Nevertheless, a lot of work still needs to be done in the areas of geostatistics, stope design and financial modelling of mining options. For the foreseeable future computer based planning will operate parallel to manual methods until such a time as sufficient personnel are proficient in the use of computer systems. This paper describes the program of computerization at Nkana Division, reviews current applications and the benefits and experience gained and discusses the promise of current and future developments.

In recent years attempts have been made to fight open and intensive mine fires by the use of special extinguishers, which are able to produce great volumes of inert gases directed into the fire zone. These extinguishers are derived from turbo-jet engines used in aircrafts and adopted for operations in mine conditions. The purpose of this paper is to draw the attention to a computer simulation method, enabling studies of dynamical behaviour of mine ventilation processes disturbed by open fires, which are also influenced by measures taken during fire fighting actions i.a. the mentioned operating extinguishers. The first part of this paper gives an account of the principles on which the computer simulation program, concerning the non- steady mine ventilation process, the fire as a heat source and the extinguisher as a source of inert gas and moisture has been based. The next part of this paper deals with simplifying assumptions and the subsequent limitations of the derived simulation pro- gram. Finally, from an example of a computer simulation, the results will be presented and relations shown between parameters characterising the ventilation process during the fire fighting action.

The development of transportation systems for mined materials has historically been characterized by steadily increasing sizes in basic hauling units. This is especially true for open pit mines for which success is dependent upon the economical transportation of vast quantities of material. The depletion of high grade ore reserves has mandated a tremendous increase in the size and complexity of the ore haulage systems necessary for open pit mines, These increased demands were served by rail haulage systems in the early large open pit copper mines while later developed properties opted for the flexibility and lower initial costs of truck haulage. Now, we find the trucks being displaced as large overland belt conveyors tackle the problem of handling these ever larger quantities of low-grade ores with accompanying overburden ratios that can run as high as 10:1 or even 15:1. The basic development of large conveyors with shiftable sections and modular belts has generally taken place overseas, during the last few decades. The coal fields of central Europe proved an ideal testing ground for conveyor innovation because the low density and natural friability of the material created an ideal medium for transporting by belt conveyor. Now these proven ideas are being considered for and implemented into both the soft and hard rock mining industries of the United States.

This paper presents a summary of basic requirements for the design, installation and operation of booster fans in coal mines, especially in deep and/or extensive mines. It includes a brief description of the major steps that should be followed to ensure that these units are used in coal mines safely and efficiently. The guidelines were prepared based on the standards and regulations adopted by two prominent coal mining countries, the best practices developed by the mining industry, and the applicable standards used in the United States for the fail-safe operation of main fans.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this article is to outline the data requirements for selecting a proper underground mining method and to discuss the general steps taken in selecting that method. Determining the appropriate mining method is an iterative process that continues throughout the life of a mineral deposit. We will discuss the subject from the standpoint of a feasibility study, where a realistic assessment is necessary in order to determine investment merit. The feasibility stage of a project is that point where the drilling program has defined sufficient geologic reserves to consider mining the deposit but little or no underground development has been done. Primary parameters for consideration in choosing a mining method are 1) geometry of the deposit; 2) distribution of grade; 3) rock mass strength for the deposit, as well as the hanging wall and footwall; 4) mining cost and capitalization requirements; 5) mining rate; 6) type and availability of labor; 7) environmental considerations; and 8) other site-specific conditions. Of these parameters, the first four have the most impact on determining the general mining method to be employed.

In 1986, a subsidiary of Echo Bay Mines Ltd. purchased the McCoy property, 55 km (35 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain, NV. Echo Bay then launched a two-year, $1 15-mil lion capital program to build a mill to extract gold and silver from high-grade ore mined in two open pits - the original McCoy pit and a more recent discovery, the Cove. Engineering on a new mill began in 1987 with the facility coming on line in 1989. It was comprised of a semiautogenous (SAG) mill and ball mill grinding, leaching, flotation, counter current decantation (CCD) and Merrill-Crowe processes. The mill started up on McCoy ore, a rocky material that settled very well in the new CCD thickener system. Production levels were maintained at about 7.2 kt/d (8000 stpd). The situation changed as the McCoy ore played out and increasing amounts of material from the Cove pit-with its oxide, sulfide and carbonaceous ore - were fed to the mill. The problem was the high clay content of the Cove ore. The new ore immediately created production problems, mainly loss of control on the CCD thickeners. With the McCoy pit slated to be shut down in early 1991, it was essential to find a way to efficiently process the Cove ore. Initially, the only way to regain control of the thickeners was to slow down the processing rate and increase flocculant usage, thereby getting the solids to settle in the thickeners. But this had its cost. Production dropped to about 5.9 kt/d (6500 stpd), additional operators were needed and flocculant costs, on occasion, would reach an unacceptable $80,000 per month. INTRODUCTION Mount Isa Mines Ltd. operates a copper and silver- lead-zinc property at Mount Isa in northwest Queens- land, Australia. Mount Isa is located in the tropics at latitude 20°43'S and longitude 139°30’E (Fig. 1). It is on the upper watershed of the Leichhardt River and at an elevation of 365 m above sea level. The average rain- fall is 360 mm/y, the greater part of which falls in January to March (the hot summer months). The mean summer temperature for these months is 30°C (dry bulb), with a maximum temperature of 43°C; the mean wet bulb temperature is 25°C with a maximum of 28°C. Mount Isa is located geologically towards the western edge of the Precambrian Shield of northwestern Queensland. This complex forms a north-tilting dissected peneplain which extends in the north-south direction for 640 km, with widths varying from 32 km to 190 km. The combination of differential erosion, regional strike, and steep dips has produced a corrugated topography of low north-south orientated hills and valleys. The field was first discovered in 1923 as a silver- lead-zinc field. Mount Isa Mines Ltd. was formed the following year and subsequently became the sole operating company on the field. Lead and copper ore have been mined and treated separately and simultaneously at Mount Isa since 1953. Intensive exploration commenced in 1954 and an active exploration program provided the justification for a series of production expansion programs in both silver- lead-zinc and copper (see Table 1 ). The most recent and largest production expansion program at Mount Isa commenced when a decision was reached in December 1969 calling for an increase in copper production from 100 000 to 150 000 t/y of blister copper. A major factor which influenced this decision was the substantial additions to the ore reserves in the so-called 1100 ore body which is a massive copper sulfide ore body with a known strike length of approximately 2500 m, a height which is variable up to 300 m, and a width of generally 300 m up to a maximum of 370 m (see Figs. 2 and 3). Host to the copper mineralization is a complex and variable rock generally called "silica dolomite." The ore body strikes 6.02 to 6.1 rad (345° to 350°), dips west between 0.78 and 1.13 rad (45° and 65°), and is truncated at depth by fault implaced basement rocks. It first occurs some 600 m below the surface and bottoms at about 1000 m below the surface. The unconfined compressive strength of the silica dolomite ore varies from 150 to 250 MPa, whereas the basement rocks, carbonaceous mylonite, slaty shale, buck quartz, and greenstone (a chloritic schist) are considerably weaker, varying in strength from 20 to 80 MPa. The distribution of mineralization within the ore body is variable, but can be considered as generally high grade at or just above the basement contact and diminishing towards the upper reaches of the ore body. Ravensthorpe Nickel Operation (RNO) is a major new mine and processing plant currently being constructed by BHP Billiton in a ?green field? site near the small town of Ravensthorpe, about 150 km west of Esperance and six hours drive from Perth in Western Australia. Ensuring that the project has a positive overall impact on the surrounding region and that this extends well beyond the life of the operation will be a major challenge for RNO, state and local government, and the local community. For the last two years, the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM) has been assisting RNO management and the RNO Community Liaison Committee to develop a community sustainability monitoring framework for the project. This paper reports on the process that was used to develop the framework, describes the main elements and briefly discusses key learnings from the exercise.

Powerful mining systems typically generate high-level noise that can damage the hearing ability of miners. Engineering noise controls are the most desirable and effective control for overexposure to noise. However, the effects of these noise controls on the actual hearing status of workers are not easily measured. A tool that can provide guidance in assigning workers to jobs based on the noise levels to which they will be exposed is highly desirable. Therefore, the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a tool to estimate in a systematic way the hearing loss due to occupational noise exposure and to evaluate the effectiveness of developed engineering controls. This computer program is based on the ISO 1999 standard and can be used to estimate the loss of hearing ability caused by occupational noise exposures. In this paper, the functionalities of this software are discussed and several case studies related to mining machinery are presented to demonstrate the functionalities of this software.

General widespread interest in fine coal cleaning circuits did not occur in the United States until the mid 1960's. Up until this period the relatively low price for which bituminous coal was sold did not justify for many operators the capital and maintenance costs associated with the beneficiation and drying of fine coal. However, with current growing interest in this area, the introduction of new types of process equipment along with modifications to existing components is occuring to maximize the recovery of coal fines. In 1973 Derrick Manufacturing Corporation introduced high frequency screening machinery into the coal industry. The first design consisted of a 4 ft. wide 18 ft. long single deck screen frame with three 100 mesh woven wire screen surfaces divided by repulping troughs for the addition of wash water. In addition, a special slotted rubber dewatering deck was installed on the discharge end of the unit to assure adequate dewatering of the screen oversize. This panel had nominal 25 mesh X 3.0" slotted openings. The machine was also equipped with a special high speed-low amplitude (3600 RPM .032" % AMP.) integral vibrator.

In 1981 a Zn-Ag-Pb deposit was discovered in the vicinity of Molai, Greece. Subsequently, it was determined to be of the Kuroko type. The geology of various areas in the southeast Peloponnesean Peninsula is similar to that of the Molai deposit. Since favorable geologic criteria are present, absent, or unknown in varying degrees in all areas, it was deemed necessary to classify and rank the prospective areas according to the level of information available. For each level of information, an ore discovery model based on pragmatic exploration criteria was developed, enabling the favorability of occurrence to be calculated for each area. A Monte Carlo simulation was used to calculate the probabilities, the input data consisting of quantitative and qualitative estimates of the geologic criteria for each area. Three levels of information were modeled : Level A consisted of 9 criteria, level B of 12 criteria, and level C of 20 criteria. The three levels of information were tested on the Molai area. The results exceeded expectations, showing the gen¬eral trends which control mineralization at the lowest level of information. With an increase in the level of information, geological trends become more evident and a differentiation can be made between areas containing Cu mineralization, exhibiting a low probability, and areas likely to contain Zn-Ag-Pb mineralization. The models were then applied to the neighboring areas - only level A and B were available.

Increasing use of pressurized-face tunnel boring machines in North America has produced a similar increase in the application of precast concrete tunnel linings. Where a pressurized TBM is needed, immediate ground support and ground water pressure resistance is also required. A segmental lining installed within the TBM tail shield provides the only available means of providing such a sealed lining. This paper addresses new developments in North America in lining applications and design. For the purposes of this paper, a precast concrete tunnel lining is defined as a tunnel lining constructed using precast concrete segments that are assembled into a lining ring. The lining rings are connected adjacent to each other to form a tunnel lining. Each segment has a sealing gasket around it so that when the lining is completed, it provides a fully waterproof lining system. The ring is erected within the tail shield of the TBM and the annular gap around the ring is filled with grout as the machine moves forward. The ring is not expanded and normally provides the finished lining of the tunnel with no requirement for a second pass lining. The TBM has a series of hydraulic rams that push on the leading edge of the segmental lining to provide the sole system of forward propulsion for the machine. The rings are tapered, being longer on one side than the other. This allows the rings to be installed either on a curve or in a straight line depending on the rotational position of the rings.

One possible alternative for disposal of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) by-products is use as backfilling support material in highwall mine adits. The finite element method was used to analyze the variation of stresses and displacements within and around a highwall adit backfilled with FGD materials. The engineering properties of the rock material and the optimum mix proportioning of the FGD materials were obtained from laboratory tests. Finite element analyses show that, for the case in question, the roof displacement would decrease about 48 percent and the peak stress could be decreased about 58 percent. The study indicates that fairly weak FGD materials can eventually lead to stability of backfilled highwall adits.

In 1984 a high temperature heat recuperation system was installed in the pellet plant of the National Steel Pellet Company located in Keewatin, Minnesota. The system is similar to those of Cleveland Cliffs Empire and U.S. Steel's Minntac operations. It recovers hot process air from the cooler by induced flow, and directs it to an intermediate zone between the drying and preheat zones on the grate machine. This system recently underwent further modifications in April 1985, following initial operation in 1984. The M. A. Hanna Company, which manages the property, developed the design criteria and made the subsequent recommendations for modification through its research facility in Nashwauk, Minnesota.

The wetting behavior of liquid polymers at solid surfaces and the adhesion forces involved at polymer-filler interfaces should always be considered in the fabrication of high quality polymer composites, including those made with mineral fillers. Spontaneous polymer spreading over the filler surface is a basic condition in the fabrication of the polymer-mineral composites. In this regard, the wetting and adhesion characteristics of polymer-mineral systems are reviewed in this contribution. It appears that several aspects of wetting phenomena at mineral filler surfaces are not well described in the literature and require further systematic study. Specifically, it is clear from this review that efforts should be made to determine the effects of mineral surface contamination (including surface hydration) on wetting and adhesion phenomena, and to determine the wetting characteristics of molten polymers at mineral filler surfaces. It is expected that any improved fundamental understanding of wetting and adhesion phenomena for the polymer-mineral composites will provide the basis for further technological development.

Among the methods of mineral processing, gravity concentration methods are, probably, those which have lower costs, higher capacities and lower operational complexity. In order to be really effective, these methods require a feed size distribution in which the particles are liberated. Further, there must be a significant difference (usually higher than 1-1.5) among the real densities of the particles. However, in most cases, the traditional gravity concentrators (jigs, shaking tables, spirals and dense medium hydrocyclones) lose efficiency (sharpness of cut and recovery) when the mean diameter of particles are lower than 0.05mm and the difference among densities are smaller than 1. Most gravity concentrators developed in the last 20 years are based on the use of centrifugal forces that create large "apparent gravitational gradient" seeking to overcome the limitations of particles size distribution. This paper presents the experience of the CVRD Research Center in evaluation and development of new process based on using this new generation of gravity concentrators.
