Mining companies are increasingly approaching the social aspect of sustainable development within the rural communities that neighbour their projects and operations. Rural community engagement requires significant effort and resources, and it can be extremely challenging for mining companies to earn and sustain social capital. The focus on rural, proximal community engagement is not to be understated and has led to significant benefits in many communities. However, opposition to mining projects is often exhibited in urban environments, where there may be potential for mining companies to gain social capital with relative ease. Cities tend to have existing frameworks for community engagement and public activation, such as annual parades and festivals, that make it easy for a mining company to provide financial support or value-in-kind. Local organizations and community groups can achieve the same amount of engagement in an urban environment with significantly less effort required from the mining company. By applying simple marketing principles to community engagement strategies, corporations can increase awareness for their business and encourage city residents to think critically about the origin of resources. Unlike many corporations, mining companies are not marketing or selling products to individual consumers. From this arises the opportunity for a company to use marketing to promote other positive initiatives and, as such, connect their brand with positive messaging thus earning social capital. This may lead to a wide variety of secondary impacts including benefits to recruitment efforts, increased political support, and positive media coverage. This paper explores these matters with special reference to Vancouver, BC, Canada and the mining companies Teck and Goldcorp.

The abstract states that horizontally-mounted jet fans are commonly used to ventilate vehicular tunnels due to their space and cost savings compared to fully ducted systems. It highlights the successful use of vertically-mounted jet fans in exhaust ventilation shafts for a passenger rail overbuild in New York City. The paper compares shaft dimensions, jet fan placement, and measured airflows, also comparing these measurements to predictions from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.

The aim of this joint work between the French Coal Board and the Paris School of Mines is to be able to practically model the behaviour of a transverse drum cutting rock with picks. First a theoretical approach leads to the concept of cutting curves, giving forces and torque against penetration per drum revolution. Then experimental evidence, from full scale and reduced scale testing, validated and confirmed the theoretical shape of the curves. Finally practical applications are given, to improve the design or use of a shearer (or continuous miner). A micro-computer program is being developed to predict the cutting performances of a machine in certain conditions.

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority are undertaking the extension of Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Metrorail service to Washington Dulles International Airport and beyond to Route 772 in Loudoun County, Virginia. The roughly 37 kilometers long, double track alignment involves two 700 meters long single track, soft ground NATM tunnels at Tysons Corner, two 3.3 kilometers long single track rock TBM tunnels at Dulles Airport and one 25-meter deep station at the airport to be constructed by NATM in sedimentary rock. The design-build project is being implemented in a Public-Private-Partnership. A joint venture of Bechtel and Washington Group International has concluded the preliminary engineering and construction is scheduled to start in late 2007.

The Los Angeles Metro Eastside Extension light rail project included a 1.5 mile underground segment, which consisted of twin 18'?10" ID tunnels, bored with two EPB-TBMs. One of the major project challenges after the completion of the bored tunnels was the excavation of six cross passages within alluvial geology below the water table and with low ground cover. Sequential excavation methods were employed and this paper details the design, ground treatment, support measures, and construction methods used to mine these cross passages beneath the congested urban streets of the City of Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension (MGLEE) extends Metro’s light rail system to the densely populated and growing East Los Angeles communities. Much of the 6 mile alignment consists of at-grade track, but the project also features a1.7 mile underground segment in cut-and-cover and twin-bored tunnel structures. In light of past experiences with open shield construction, The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) specified, for the first time, use of Pressure Face Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM’s) to advance tunnels through soft ground. This paper describes the history of the tunnel design, construction management, and construction methods adopted that resulted in successfully completing the tunneling segment.

The properties of Neutra-Fix® and Neutra-Ment® , two new lime substitutes for the treatment of acid mine drainage (Arm), have been compared with lime and Alkament®, two products presently in use for AMD treatment. The two new products are basically dolomitic byproducts and produce sludges that are more compact than those from lime. Sludge settling rates are faster than lime with iron concentrations after 24 hours that comply with EPA regulations. Material utilization and optimum pit are reported.

Introduction Many gold and silver ores are refractory to conventional processing technologies. Thus, precious metals recovery is uneconomic. These resources can consist of ores, flotation concentrates, mill tailings, and other reserves. The refractory nature of these materials can be ascribed to such components as iron sulfide minerals, silica minerals, tellurides, organic compounds, and sulfosalts. Precious metals locked within iron sulfide minerals account for a large number of refractory gold ores. These minerals consist principally of pyrite or arsenopyrite. They must be oxidized to liberate the encapsulated precious metal and allow its contact with the leaching agent. Carbonaceous gold ores represent a unique class of refractory precious metal ores in general. Not only does gold encapsulation by iron sulfide minerals occur (Hausen, 1985), but these ores also contain organic matter that interferes with gold recovery by cyanidation. Direct interference can be attributed to either occlusion of gold within organic matter or formation of a stable gold-carbon complex. The magnitude of this problem is debatable. Wells and Mullens (1973) examined two carbonaceous gold ores and found no association between the gold and carbonaceous material. A more common problem is indirect interference, whereby the aurocyanide complex formed during cyanidation is sorbed by the native organic matter and is not available for recovery. This phenomenon is referred to as "preg robbing" (Osseo-Asare et al., 1984; Hausen and Bucknam, 1984). Guay (1981) summarized various methods that can reduce preg robbing during processing of carbonaceous gold ores. However, some are not applicable to carbonaceous ores that have significant amounts of gold locked in iron sulfide minerals. Several methods exist for oxidizing iron sulfide minerals and rendering refractory precious metal ore amenable to conventional recovery processes. These include various embodiments of roasting (Jha and Kramer, 1984; Brown, 1984; Arriagada and Os-seo-Asare, 1984; Smith, 1986), pressure oxidation (Muir et al., 1984; Beattie et al., 1985; Thompson, 1986; Weir et al., 1986; Argall, 1986), and chemical oxidation (Scheiner, 1971; Jackson, 1983; Van Weert et al., 1986). Each process has been successfully used for refractory precious metal ores. In many instances, however, their use is precluded by capital and operating costs relative to the value of the ore. An alternative to these methods is microbial pretreatment - a biological process whereby iron sulfide minerals are degraded and the liberated precious metal values can be recovered by conventional technologies. Bioleaching refractory precious metal ores is a relatively new concept compared to roasting and chemical oxidation. It is rapidly becoming established as a viable pretreatment alternative. Numerous studies have been conducted in the laboratory and on a pilot scale (Yudina et al., 1979; Lawrence and Bruynesteyn, 1983; Pol 'kin et al., 1985; Marchant, 1985; Livesey-Goldblatt, 1985; Gibbs et al., 1986). Comparative tests have demonstrated that bioleaching can be equal to or better than roasting or pressure oxidation in terms of product recovery and process economics (Fridman and Savari, 1983; Livesy-Goldblatt et al., 1983; Karavaiko et al., 1985; Gilbert et al., 1986; Hackl et al., 1986). Bioleaching's main drawback is that pretreatment requires days rather than hours. This can lead to excessive operating costs for difficult-to-treat ores. Undercut-and-fill mining is a method developed by the International Nickel Company to deal with abnormal pillar mining conditions at one of its mines. Results have been such that its use has been extended to normal, pillar recovery operations in other mines of the Company as a replacement for conventional square-set pillar mining. It is anticipated that the method will also largely replace square-set stoping at INCo mines, especially for mining at deep horizons.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is designing the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in San Jose, California. The project includes 6.9 km (4.3 miles) of twin-bored tunnels to be constructed through downtown San Jose using two earth pressure balance machines (EPBMs). This paper begins with a project description and update of the project status followed by a description of the relationship between anticipated ground conditions and EPBM requirements. Topics addressed include soil conditioning, abrasion resistance, annulus grouting, face pressure estimation, additional pressure control devices and control measures to limit over-excavation and settlement.

We in Kennecott are well aware that Alaskans are interested in the progress of our project at Ruby Creek. We would very much like to be able to present you with a final report at this time and tell you about a new mine. I'm afraid, however, that it will be several years at best before such a report can be made. This, then, is an interim report to describe briefly some of our findings to date, and to acquaint you with some of the problems, both geologic and economic, which must 5e resolved favorably before we can talk about a mine. There are several things about this project which make it unusual and interesting to those of us who have been connected with it. Firstly, there is the fundamental importance to Alaska, in the present stage of its economic history, of any undertaking which offers promise of turning a natural resource into a competitive export product. I am sure all of us would get a lot more satisfaction out of having a part in bringing in a new mine in Alaska than we would out of adding another one to the long list in, say, Arizona.

"INTRODUCTION Characterization of waste rock is frequently an oversight in mine planning which can contribute to significant delay in permitting and ultimately development. Thorough waste rock characterization is now a prerequisite to developing operating and closure plans acceptable to regulators and the public. BACKGROUND A long history of mine development has placed virtually all focus on the economic extraction and beneficiation of ore materials, while waste rock characterization and management received substantially less attention and consideration. Inadequate waste rock characterization has contributed to planning and management practices that are having unintended and unforeseen impacts to surface and groundwater, and in some cases lead to significant long term closure liability. In response, the regulatory community has developed guidelines for performing waste rock characterization during the pre- mine permitting process that in some cases seem onerous (BLM, 2013). Additionally, where a project proponent has not met these guidelines or results have been deemed “inadequate”, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection and Bureau of Land Management (regulatory agencies) will only issue operating permits with rigid management practices to address the uncertainty, including requirements for lining waste rock facilities. WASTE ROCK CHARACTERIZATION FOR NEVADA PROJECTS Newmont Mining Corporation (Newmont) operations in Nevada approaches waste rock characterization like ore characterization, as it requires a similar investment of time, funding and attention to detail in order to pass public and regulatory scrutiny. Newmont follows a tiered approach to characterization that creates three over-lapping data sets representing an “escalation” in analysis at each tier, an approach that has thus far gained regulatory approval. “Tier 1” waste rock characterization for most Newmont projects begins with exploration drilling which follows internal standards and procedures. 20-foot composite samples are prepared from all drilling and analyzed for multiple trace elements using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) methods and for acid-base characterization using method ASTM-E1915. If the exploration program is successful and further resource or reserve development is recommended, the Tier 1 data are used to prepare a Waste Rock Characterization Plan (Plan) that will be presented to regulatory agencies as a part of baseline project characterization."

Machine learning in the form of artificial neural networks was applied to investigate whether specimen load evolution can be predicted as a function of acoustic emission (AE) signals in the case of three-point bending (TPB) marble specimens instrumented with piezoelectric sensors. The ultimate objective of this study is to develop a model that can quantify rock behavior under loading that can lead to rock-failure prediction in underground structures subjected to bending, such as roof failure in development or production openings.

In addition to compliance with government emissions and reporting requirements, mining and mineral processing companies are increasing energy efficiency to reduce costs and become more competitive in the global marketplace. One of the major obstacles to identifying opportunities for increased energy efficiency is the lack of readily available data on energy use, and more importantly the energy use linked to production data, that identify energy reduction opportunities. As well as energy reduction, mining and mineral processing companies often struggle with the prediction of energy use, and are often penalized for under or over forecasting. Once again, it is the lack of timely information that makes this prediction difficult. This paper looks at expanding the use of a Manufacturing Execution Systems by integrating with Energy Solutions. This will provide automatic, timely information, at a granularity that makes it easier to identify energy reduction opportunities, reduce energy costs, and better predict energy use in a mining and mineral processing operation.

At Lupin mine gold is spatially and genetically linked to zones of hydrothermal alteration in iron-formation which are symmetrically developed adjacent to late Archean quartz veins. Immediately adjacent to the veins, coarse grained, typically gold- and sulfide-poor, calc-silicate rocks are often present. These rocks comprise hedenbergite + quartz ± grossular garnet ± epidote ± scheelite ± calcite. Sulfides (pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite and loellingite) and gold are concentrated in the next zone and occur with hornblende-rich rocks comprised of hornblende, quartz, hedenbergite and grunerite. Furthest from the veins are gold- and sulfide-poor, grunerite-rich iron formation comprising grunerite, quartz, hornblende and sometimes magnetite. Although the alteration assemblages have similarities with skarns, they develop in iron formation, and are at best indirectly related to intrusive igneous rocks. Geological and geochemical data clearly indicate the calc-silicate rocks are metasomatic in origin.

There are three principle lines of evidence that indicate the clay minerals found in the Goathill North (GHN) rock pile at the Molycorp mine are predominantly a product of hydrothermal alteration, not weathering. The unweathered drill core and samples from GHN have similar types and abundances of clay-mineral groups based on XRD analysis. Chemical analyses from the electron microprobe reveal similar chemical compositions for the hydrothermal alteration clays in drill-core samples and clays found in the rock pile. Textural evidence gathered from petrographic and microprobe examination also suggests a hydrothermal origin for clay minerals.

Wet bituminous coal fines from active and abandoned slurry impoundments are currently being examined as a recoverable feedstock for the production of coal water slurry fuel (CWSF). Preliminary analysis indicates that these coal fines can be converted into low solids, low viscosity CWSF with acceptable stability without the use of viscosity modifiers (dispersants) or stabilizers. Efforts are now underway to determine if the impounded coal fines can be economically cleaned by froth flotation to an ash level of < 12 wt. % and a total sulfur content of 1.2 wt. %.

Industrial flotation of sulfide ores is 80 years old. It has gone through many advances to date. However most flotation operations are still struggling to improve performance, which as a worldwide average is at the 90% level. What can be done to push the ceiling to 95% or better without performing finer primary grind, nor without duplicating flotation plant capacity? Such "unique task" can be performed by the low volume high capacity new flotation equipment known as the JAMESON CELL, when used as, "post-scavenger" of final plant tails. Improved efficiencies are obtained mainly from two cases: -Particles which never contacted a bubble. -Particles sheared-off by cell turbulence due to reduced number of hydrophobic sites. The application reverses conventional trend of using large volume mechanical cells by trade-in with smaller efficient equipment: resulting in reduced capital expenditures and operating costs. Outstanding "pre-rougher" applications are also presented.

Minor elements determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy include: zinc, cadmium, copper, cobalt, nickel, chromium, manganese, and iron. Of these elements, only three; zinc, cadmium, and copper are found to have been introduced with the ore-forming fluids. Iron, manganese, chromium, and nickel were increased in dolo-stone lithologies when compared to limestone lithologies. The uniform distribution of cobalt suggests this element was neither increased nor decreased during ore emplacement nor during dolomitization of the rocks. Zinc increases adjacent to ore result from leakages into open spaces rather than as pervasive aureoles surrounding ore bodies.
