This paper is motivated by the belief that increasing drilling and blasting costs will not necessarily bring about better digging or crushing productivity. As a matter of fact it can be counter productive as the ensuing discussion will show. In the two case studies presented herein when powder factor increased, productivity at a rope shovel and at a primary crusher decreased. Experience has shown that equipment (shovel and primary crusher) productivity increases as the powder factor increases and concurrently operating costs decrease. This is illustrated by Figure 1where the graph shows (assuming drilling costs constant) that for increases in powder factor initially operating costs might fall till a certain point and then they start to go up again. By the same token we need to understand what is the behavior of the operation’s productivity. It seems intuitive productivity goes up for increases in powder factor but when an operation reaches the point of minimum operating cost one could say that productivity reached its maximum. For continuing increases in powder factor can productivity still go up or does it go down? This paper presents two examples where the productivities of a surface coal mine and of a quarry are reduced for increases in powder factor. This indicates that these two operations could be operating to the right of their minimum operating costs and maximum productivity and therefore wasting precious drilling and blasting dollars and resources. Moreover, their productivity is following the red dotted line in Figure 1 and the question becomes can they follow the blue dotted line for increased drilling and blasting costs? The industry owes to itself to determine this minimum operating cost point and what can be done in case that the productivity goes down afterwards despite an increase in drilling and blasting costs. In other words, utilize your drilling and blasting resources correctly. In the two examples that follow single explosive loading strategies make powder factor a valid means of comparing the results of productivity as a function of powder factor. Also, external factors such as equipment operator influence are eliminated due to the long time span considered in the analysis

I have been following the discussions on coal degradation started by the article "Degradation process in coal slurry pipe-lines," by M.G. Ayat and B.C. Scott. I agree with Mr. Dasher's comments in January that the title of the article was perhaps misleading as the information appeared to pertain more to processing the coal than to transportation. Specifically, the authors' conclude that the cyclone had an important impact on the degradation. Dr. Ferri's comments on degradation in other physical processes was very correct, handling of coal in a turbulent manner has an impact on the size distribution of the coal. This is one reason that when I design a coal system (mine to rail car) I try to minimize the total number of transfer and processing steps consistent with achieving the desired product specifications. Another area, mentioned in passing in the article, the impact of natural causes and the mining step, is of particular interest to me. A mine in West Virginia had a variation of 50% in the -6.35 mm (-0.25 in.) raw coal depending upon the direction of mining. Since it was a single unit mine, this significantly impacted the final product. Two articles on mining's impact on size distribution are: • Stefanko, R., Chopra, I. K., and Ramani, R. V., 1974, "Mining influence on size consistency and washability char¬acteristics of coal," SME Fall Meeting. September; and • Albrecht, M., and Olsen, D., 1980, "Mining methods impact on coal preparation plant design." 1st International Mine Planning and Development Symposium. September. Both articles presented information on variation of size distribution and cleaning plant performance on a coal depending on the mining method used. Both articles considered a single coal seam at one mining operation. Stefanko's article considered continuous and conventional mining of coal in Pennsylvania. Albrecht's article considered surface, underground continuous, and underground hydraulic mining of a coal in British Columbia. Both concluded that mining methods do impact coal characteristics. I agree with Mr. Ayat's comments in reply to Dr. Ferri's discussion, "... degradation is a multi-faceted phenomenon involving many natural and man-made factors." As efforts are being made to produce a higher quality (lower sulfur) coal, this topic becomes even more important

In 1989, an autogenous grinding task force was formed to study potential autogenous grinding circuits to replace the existing semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) at the National Steel Pellet Plant in Keewatin, MN. Pilot plant test work, performed by the Hanna Research Center (HRC), indicated that fully autogenous grinding with pebble extraction and crushing could be incorporated into the existing circuits. In 1990, one of the existing 10 grinding mills was converted for an in-plant test incorporating pebble crushing. Full-scale test work were conducted in 1990 and 1991. They verified the pilot plant projections with primary mill throughputs from the fully autogenous circuit using pebble crushing being greater than throughput of the existing SAG mill circuits. The plant produces 5 Mt/a (4.9 million ltpy) of iron ore pellets from 17.6 Mt (17.3 million It) of crude taconite. Crude ore is single-stage crushed by gyratory crushers. Primary grinding is performed by 10 semi-autogenous wet grinding mills. Secondary grinding is performed by five ball mills. Induration is with an Allis Chalmers grate-kiln pelletizing system. The primary grinding circuit consists of 108.2-m-diam x 5.5-m long (27 ft-diam x 18-ft) SAG mills. The mills are charged with 127 mm-diam (5 in.diam) steel grinding balls at from 3% to 5% by volume. Ball consumption rate is about 0.55 kg/t (1.25 lbs/lt) of crude ore feed to the mill. Each SAG mill is powered by two 2.6 MW (3500 hp) motors drawing 5450 kW (7300 hp) at 76% of critical speed. The mills are grate discharge with 16 mm (0.6 in.) slotted grate openings when new. The mill discharge is sized on a trommel screen having 4.5 mm (0.2 in.) openings. The plus 4.5 mm (+0.2 in.) oversize material is returned to the discharge end of the mill by a reverse screw auger located in the center of the trommel. The -4.5 mm (-0.2 in.) trommel screen undersize is pumped to magnetic cobbers.

An asbestos substitute is any material that replaces asbestos in a commercial product. There are many asbestos substitutes, each with its own unique physical and chemical properties. Substitutes can be inorganic or organic, fibrous or nonfibrous, and natural or synthetic. They also can be used as a direct substitute for asbestos or as a replacement product. Probably in no other field is the diversity of substitute materials so great. The concept of asbestos substitutes is not new. The first major effort to develop asbestos substitutes was undertaken by the federal government. The United States has always been dependent on foreign sources for strategic-grade asbestos, and during World War II, the government was concerned that these supplies would be cut off. Strategic-grade asbestos was critical in many electrical and thermal insulation applications (electrical insulation, battery plate separators, flame-proof boards, insulation for rocket components, etc.). A reliable supply of nonstrategic-grade asbestos also was required for general civilian and military applications, such as in brakes, clutches, and construction materials. The government not only initiated a major search for deposits containing strategic-grade asbestos, it also funded research on synthesizing asbestos in the laboratory and developing products that did not contain strategic- grade asbestos. These efforts, as well as those conducted by the private sector, generally were unsuccessful. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a second major effort to develop asbestos substitutes began because the general public was concerned about the health threat posed by the release of asbestos fibers during the manufacture, use, repair, and disposal of asbestos-containing products. Strict regulations covering the mining and manufacturing sector already had been enacted because of the issue of occupational exposure. The issue then became environmental exposures. Environmental regulations were enacted, and through time they became more strict. The combination of increasingly strict environmental regulation, maturing of some asbestos markets, and liability issues prompted many manufacturers to discontinue asbestos product lines or search for asbestos substitutes. As a result, asbestos usage dramatically declined from the 1970s to the present (Table 1).

As part of an MSHA program to assess the effectiveness of dust control parameters for longwall mining operations, respirable dust studies were conducted on six longwall sections. The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the influence of airflow and production on longwall dust control. The sections were sampled for 3 to 35 shifts. In addition to dust, ventilation and production measurements, other dust control and operational parameters were measured. The water spray system at each operation conformed with generally recommended practices. Therefore, improvements to the dust control system would be most appropriately achieved through improvements to ventilation along the face. Two methods of assessing the influence of ventilation and production were used. For two of the six mines where extensive sampling (22 and 35 shifts) was conducted, multiple linear regressions were used to relate the dust concentration versus airflow and production data. For these two mines, statistically significant correlations existed between concentration and both production and airflow. The multiple regressions fit to the data indicated that for every 0.47 m3/s (1,000 cfm) increase in airflow, there would be approximately 0.04 to 0.07 mg/m3 reduction in dust concentration; and, for every 1,000 ton increase in production, there would be approximately 0.15 to 0.50 mg/m3 increase in dust concentration. For the four mines with limited data (3 to 10 shifts), as well as for the two mines with extensive sampling, an average ratio of airflow per ton of coal mined was calculated by proportioning the airflow to production and the designated occupation personal respirable dust exposure to a 2.0 mg/m3 concentration. The airflow-to-tons ratio required to maintain a 2.0 mg/m3 dust concentration ranged from 0.0038 0.0071 m3/s per ton (8 to 15 cfm/ton). Both of these data treatments were used to calculate airflow requirements based on normal production rates. For the two mines where both the regression and airflow-to-tons ratio were calculated, results from the two methods agreed within 25 percent.

"INTRODUCTION In recent years, the development of tunnel boring machines has revolutionized the tunneling industry. The general structure of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) can be described as a multi-component system. To achieve high performance rates, machine elements have to perform reliably. Performance losses and interruptions of the construction process should be prevented or at least, reduced to a minimum. In order to achieve high advancing rates, cutting tools must be in good condition at any time. Furthermore, failure of individual tools might result in increased and faster wear of remaining structural components. For this reason, maintaining and replacing cutting tools is crucial to prevent project delays due to insufficient boring performance. Precise prognoses concerning the prevailing geology are infeasible and thus, efficient scheduling of maintenance actions is challenging. The intention of this work is to analyze different approaches of TBM maintenance in soft ground. Different strategies are analyzed by the use of a simulation approach. Cutting tool condition is regarded as performance limiting factor. The maximum operation time of the cutting tools is determined using the “Soil Abrasivity Index”. A case study serves to show the effects of different maintenance strategies on total project duration. SCHEDULING OF MAINTENANCE ACTIONS Scheduling maintenance actions of single and multi-component systems concerns numerous fields of industrial production. Concentrating on mechanized tunneling in soft ground, cutting tool maintenance represents the most common reason for intermission of advance (Köppl 2014). In literature, time-based and condition-based maintaining techniques are widely discussed. The following section outlines the principles of time- and condition-based policies. Furthermore, examples for their applications in recent research are given. Time-Based Maintenance In general, the time-based maintenance approach assumes that the failure behavior of the system components is predictable. Maintenance actions are scheduled according to predefined intervals (e.g., hours, days, weeks). A detailed analysis of preventive repair times or interval forms the basis for maintenance decisions. For this approach, an adequate quantity and quality of data is fundamental. Numerous studies deal with the analysis of time-based maintenance for production equipment. In fields of mechanized tunneling, unplanned machine downtimes restrict the applicability of time-based maintenance approaches. Thus, this paper mainly focuses on condition-based maintenance."

Clays for building bricks and roofing tiles in Chile are classified as common clays and ball clays, with deposits of sedimentary and residual origin, both Cenozoic in age. Deposits are known from north to south, through 11 of the 13 Chilean Administrative Regions, 18° to 39° South latitude, and from west to east, through three of Chile's main geomorphic features, namely the Coastal Plains, Coastal Range, and Intermediate Depression. Alluvial and lacustrine sedimentary common clay deposits are located in the northern and southern Intermediate Depression. The average chemical composition of clay deposits in I and I1 Regions, is 58 percent Si02, 16 percent A1203, and 4 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are sericite, quartz, feldspar, and albite. The average chemical composition of clays in Metropolitan, VI, and VIII Regions, is 52 percent Si02, 16 percent A1203, and 6 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are montmorillonite, quartz, and plagioclase. Residual common clay deposits occur in the Intermediate Depression and in the Coastal Range internal basins, VII, VLII, and IX Regions, and they represent surficial alteration of pumice beds and crystalline rocks. The average chemical composition of clay deposits derived from crystalline rocks is 58 percent SO2, 17 percent A1203, and 9 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are sericite, quartz, and clinochlore. Clay deposits formed from pumice beds contain 47 percent Si02, 24 percent A1203, and 10 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are kaolinite, feldspar, and cristobalite. Sedimentary ball clay deposits are located in the Coastal Plains and Coastal Range, VI, VII, VIII, and IX Regions, between 34" and 39" South latitude. The average chemical composition of the ball clay deposits is 51 percent ,902, 28 percent A1203, 5 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are kaolinite, quartz, and sericite (illite?). These clay deposits supply the Chilean building sector with over one million metric tons (mt) (1.1 million short tons [st]) of material per year. The average growth rate of clay consumption during the period 1993 through 1997 was 10 percent annually. The clays are used by both mechanized plants and handcraft facilities.

INTRODUCTION In the coal industry, ever greater amounts of fine coal must be processed due to the need to crush to finer sizes for impurity liberation in low cost physical cleaning processes. Fine coal processing is a major problem for the industry, both through the cost of disposal of reject fines and through the mining cost of lost coal values. Of the available disposal methods, impoundment has always been the most popular. In many cases, when the coal fines were of sufficient quality, froth flotation and expensive filtration methods were used to recover the coal in these waste streams. The coal fines are not always of a marketable quality, however, and flotation, due to poor yields and difficult dewatering, has always been an expensive and not necessarily profitable process. The oil agglomeration method is increasingly important as a technology for the treatment of fine coal-in-water suspensions. These fines can be preferentially wetted and agglomerated by many different oils mixed with the suspensions. Ash-forming impurities remain in suspension and are rejected when the agglomerates are recovered, for example, by screening. Agglomeration-based methods provide perhaps the only practical means for upgrading extremely fine coal to useful products on a large scale. As with froth flotation, oil agglomeration relies on differences in the surface properties of coal and impurities to effect separation. Whereas flotation be- comes less effective with particles finer than 200 mesh (0.075 mm) or coarser than 50 mesh (0.3 mm), there appears to be no lower limit on particle size for oil agglomeration while particles % in. (3.175 mm) diameter or larger can also be treated, if desirable. In addition to this ability to clean a broader size range of coal particles, oil agglomeration can produce a dense, coarse granular product of acceptable strength and low water content without the need for vacuum or thermal drying. The preferential wetting of solid surfaces by immiscible liquids has been utilized, if not fully understood, for a long time. Indeed Gaudin,229 in tracing the ancestry of froth flotation, refers to a 15th century oil-pulp kneading procedure in which water-wetted particles were freed under water from an oiled mass. 4.1 INTRODUCTION There have been numerous methods developed for predicting the final subsidence and final displacement profiles (Voight and Pariseau, 1970; Brauner, 1973a; Kratzsch, 1983). But for discus- sion purposes, they can be classified into six categories: theoretical, profile function, influence function, graphical, physical, and numerical modeling. The theoretical method employs mainly continuum mechanics theories and attempts to explain the mechanisms that lead to sur- face subsidence. Many models using nearly all kinds of material behavior have been developed. These include elastic (Salmon, 1963; Berry, 1964), plastic (Pariseau, 1968), viscoelastic (Iman, 1965), and elastoplastic (Dahl, 1969). The Profile Function Method is essentially a method of curve-fitting against the measured subsidence profiles in a particular mine or region. There are more than 20 profile functions developed empirically for nearly all major coalfields in the world. These include, to name just a few representative ones: Hungary (Martos, 1958), Japan (Hiramatsu and Oka, 1968), Russia (Avershin, 1947), United Kingdom (Wardell, 1965), and USA (Peng and Chen, 1981; Karmis et al., 1984). The NCB's graphical method in the subsidence Engineers' Handbook (1975) also belongs to the profile function method. The influence function method was first proposed by Bals (1931/1932). It was further developed in various periods and stages by Knothe (1957), Liu and Liao (1965), Brauner (1973a) and Marr (1975). This method is now widely used in various parts of the world. The physical models include sand (Litwiniszyn, 1959; Pariseau and Dahl, 1968) and gelatin (King and Whetton, 1958; Khair et al., 1986). They are used mainly to study the parameters that control subsidence behavior. The most popular numerical method is the finite element technique. It can simulate nearly every conceivable material behavior, inhomogeneity, bedding planes, anisotropy, and various boundary conditions. This versatility is absolutely necessary considering the ever-changing geologic and mining conditions encountered. In the following sections, only those methods that have been applied to US coalfields will be discussed. Furthermore, the methods for prediction of several key parameters such as maximum subsidence, maximum possible subsidence, and maximum displacement are discussed first, because they are the key parameters to be used in the profile function, influence function, and graphical methods.

Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde, majority owned by Phelps Dodge produces 200M lbs per year of LME Grade A copper from low cost leaching of secondary sulfides and SXEW processing. Central to the success of Cerro Verde has been the continuous improvement of leaching practices which currently yield over 80% recovery of the contained copper in the ore. This recovery has been achieved by careful attention to operational practices and leaching process fundamentals. This paper details the development of the concept of “Lixiviant Request Rate” where by solution is applied at an optimal rate for the grade, mineralogy, and the point in the leach cycle. Also paramount to the success of Request Rate technology has been the development of irrigation practices such as drip irrigation and irrigation grid design. These developments have ultimately resulted in improved copper production, decreased sulfuric acid and water consumption, decreased pumping cost, and more consistent PLS grades.

Oil sands processing generates huge volumes of slurry, known as tailings, that is being stored in tailings ponds. The volume of produced tailings is a very important factor in oil sands surface mine planning, because the available area for dam construction is limited to the lease areas. On the other hand, oil sands operators cannot leave mine sites without reclaiming the tailings ponds. Since most of the reclamation material is generated in either oil sands mining or processing, it is reasonable to include reclamation material requirement as part of long-term mine planning. In this paper, an integrated optimization framework is proposed to maximize the net present value (NPV) of the produced oil sands, with respect to tailings capacity constraints and reclamation material requirements. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed to find the optimal solution for long-term mine planning problem. A sample bitumen processing flow sheet is used to formulate the volume of produced tailings, based on Clark hot water extraction method. To verify the proposed model, it is coded in Matlab and run using CPLEX. Run results for real-case oil sands dataset show that the optimal production schedule meets material requirements for reclamation, tailings volume is within tailings capacity range in all periods and the production schedule follows the predetermined horizontal direction.

Introduction A staccato beat rings out across the Australian bush. The stamps are at work, slowly pulverizing gold-bearing ore for a patient, grizzled prospector. This is the State Battery near Marvel Loch, a tiny 22.6-t/d (25-stpd) capacity gold plant operated by the Western Australia government. It is one of many such plants located in remote corners of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. They are miniature custom mills operated for the benefit of prospectors and small mine operators. These state batteries are so called because they are operated by state governments and because the principal item of machinery in the plants are stamp batteries. They are fascinating anachronisms - throwbacks to times past, a century ago, to the hard and heady existence of gold rush days. Marvel Loch plant Typical of these operations, and perhaps a trifle more sophisticated than most, is the plant near Marvel Loch, a small center for mining and farming about 400 km (250 miles) due east of Perth. Marvel Loch. The name evokes visions of a pristine lake set in a cool, green, misty glen of the Scottish highlands. Actually, it is probably a hot, dry salt pan somewhere nearby. Just where the "loch" is difficult to discern. There is no sign of it on the map.

Analysing a flotation plant?s operating performance requires accurate metallurgical sampling. Typically, the aims of performing flotation plant surveys are to establish a consistent and accurate understanding of the operation of the circuit as well as to identify potential areas for improvement. Once the data have been collected, a mass balance is required to provide a consistent set of data from which plant performance can be assessed. Mass balancing is a key skill that many metallurgists and mining industry professionals are familiar with. Mass balancing reconciles the feed and product streams throughout the plant and is sometimes used for accounting of the material entering and leaving a system (eg. JKMetAccount). However more common reasons for mass balancing are: better understanding of the flowrates within a system, assessing the quality of data obtained from sampling and surveys, and providing a key dataset for assessing and improving the performance of unit operations. Mass balancing requires practice and experience to determine if the results are reasonable. There are various software programs available to assist in the mass balancing and understanding of processing plants. This paper is focused on JKMultiBal initially developed by Gay (1993), and then later commercialized by JKTech. JKMultiBal in its current release is for balancing data in both one and two dimensions, i.e. balancing data on either sized or assay bases as well as size-by-assay. With the recent trend in flotation circuits becoming more complex, JKMultiBal has been used to gain a better understanding of the processes occurring within the circuit. This paper provides a description of the program as well as several case studies where the two-dimensional mass balancing has resulted in improvements in plant performance.

"Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently developed a coal-mass model to realistically simulate the deformation and loading behaviors of the ribs of coal pillars in underground coal mines. The scale-dependent properties (stiffness and strength) of coal material were considered in the coal-mass model. In this paper the orientation of face cleat with respect to driving direction was integrated in the coal-mass model. The controlling parameters (dimensionless coal-mass scale and fracture strains) of the modified coal-mass model were calibrated using a published case study of coal pillar strength. Numerical models with wide ranges of controlling parameters were conducted to simulate the test pillar. The best match between the numerical modeling results and the measured stresses and deformations was achieved by using a coal-mass scale of 30 and fracture plastic shear and tensile strains of 3.25% and 0.325 %, respectively. INTRODUCTION The failure of coal pillar ribs by itself are a major hazard in underground coal mines. Furthermore, failing ribs can indirectly contribute to roof and floor instability by increasing opening widths across intersections and entryways. Over the past decade, rib failures have resulted in 12 fatalities, representing 28% of the ground-fall fatalities in U.S. underground coal mines. Mining depth has always played a very important role in assessing rib stability. Gauna and Mark (2010) completed an analysis of rib fatalities that occurred between 1996 and 2010. One of their most prominent and influential findings was the identification of a relationship among fatalities, depth, and mining height. Therefore, Coal rib stability will continue to be a challenge for future deeper mines in U.S. coal basins. In the past several decades, research efforts have focused on roof support. The current rib control practice in U.S. coal mines is to select rib bolts through a trial-and-error approach (Mohamed et al., 2015a). Rib failure incidents can be can be substantially reduced or even eliminated by adopting an engineering-based coal rib design approach. The factors affecting rib stability in coal mines are numerous and mutually dependent. These factors include but not limited to mining height and overburden depth, interburden thickness for multiple-seam mining, coal strength, cleat density, entry direction with respect to cleat orientation, existence or absence of partings in the coal, percentage of extracted roof and/or floor rock, density of rib bolt support (Mohamed et al., 2015a). Moreover, it is difficult to isolate the particular effect of a specific factor on the overall rib stability. Therefore, a reliable empirical rib design approach is not achievable because it requires a significant number of case histories to be collected in order to have a reasonable range of all of the critical parameters. However, numerical modeling can be a practical tool to assist with rib support design if the modeling is realistic, which can only be achieved through calibration and validation of the numerical model against field data."

"Rare Earth Elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential for numerous modern high tech applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts and defense applications. The destabilization of REE pricing owing to the global demand and supply deficit has forced many countries to re-evaluate the possibility of indigenous production of REEs. Cost effective and eco-friendly opportunities are being widely explored for extraction of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources such as coal and coal byproducts to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Central Alaska (Healy Coal Mine) and Southern Alaska-Cook Inlet (Wishbone Hill) province have been found to possess elevated REE concentrations as compared to average world coal estimates. The objective of the study is to enrich the REEs in the fine size fraction (-75 Microns) from Healy and Wishbone Hill by froth flotation technique. A Box-Behnken design was applied for modeling and optimization of some operating variables on the flotation to maximize REE enrichment. The variables studies were frother dosage, pulp density (% Solids) and collector dosage. Experiments were carried out using a statistical design and the main and interaction effects on response variable was evaluated by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Based on the experimental results the optimum flotation conditions for maximum REE enrichment in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% Solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy coal sample and 10% Solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic equation for modelling and optimizing the response variable is found to be independent of collector dosage for both the coal samples. INTRODUCTION Alaskan coal deposits are distributed in three major coal provinces and are in Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks. The climate, vegetation type and sedimentation process has attributed to low sulfur content (averaging 0.3 percent) in Alaskan coals compared to other coal deposits found across the globe. In Central Alaska-Nenana and Southern Alaska-Cook Inlet coal province coal resources are contained in Tertiary rocks while bulk of the Coal resource in North Slope coal province is contained in Cretaceous and Tertiary coal bearing rocks [1]. Coals from Central Alaska- Nenana (Healy) and Southern Alaska-Cook Inlet province (Wishbone Hill) have been found to possess elevated concentrations of critical REEs as compared to the amounts present in world coals (Figure 1). The Wishbone Hill deposit is considered a relatively small deposit, with about 14 million tons of identified reserves, compared to Healy which has over 500 million tons identified [2]. The REE concentrations up to 286 ppm and 524 ppm on ash basis have been reported by Gupta et al. in 2016 with elevated concentrations Ce, La, Y and Nd which are expressed to be of critical importance by US Department of Energy. Accordingly, the two coal samples possess the potential to be used as a REE resource in the near future under favorable socio-economic and geo-political scenarios. [3, 4]"

"Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is an occupational lung disease caused by chronic exposure to respirable mine dust. After decades of steady decline, CWP incidence appears to be on the rise since the mid-1990s, particularly in some regions of Appalachia. Alarmingly, many of these cases have rapidly progressed to the most advanced form of CWP, referred to as Progressive Massive Fibrosis (PMF). Most of what is currently understood about respirable mine dust has been gleaned from routine regulatory monitoring, which tracks total mass concentration of respirable dust (mg/m3) and, less frequently, silica mass content. This paper focuses on the use of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) as a way to provide basic characterization of the whole composition of the dust, allowing it to be classified into three mass fractions – coal, carbonate, and non-carbonate minerals. TGA was conducted on 59 dust samples collected by miners from eight coal mines in central Appalachia, and the results are discussed in terms of differences between mines, regions, and primary occupations. Consistent with prior results on area dust samples from some of the same mines, results of the personal samples generally show that the coal mass fraction of the dust is relatively low. Carbonate and non-carbonate minerals thus tend to make up the bulk of the dust mass, and vary across occupations and specific mines. INTRODUCTION After nearly four decades of decline, the prevalence of Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP, or “black lung”) in the US has been on the rise since the mid-1990s (Laney et al., 2014; Laney et al., 2010; Suarthana et al., 2011; Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2016). Particularly alarming is the number of cases of progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), which is the most advanced form of the disease (Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2016; Laney et al., 2017). A recent study by Laney et al. (2017) observed 192 US coal miners participating in the Coal Workers’ Health Surveillance Program (CWHSP) who had been diagnosed with PMF since 2000. Of the 163 (85%) that had a normal radiograph on file to use as a baseline, 27 (17%) of these individuals had progressed from a normal radiograph to PMF diagnosis in less than 10 years. Moreover, 162 (84%) of the individuals in that study worked in KY, WV or VA, and 169 (88%) had only ever mined underground. Blackley et al. (2016) also reported on a group of 60 PMF cases that were discovered by a single black lung clinic in eastern KY. Since seeking care at such clinics and participation in the CWHSP are voluntary, and could be influenced by a number of factors, these recent reports may well overestimate the degree of resurgence in severe disease (i.e., versus disease that was previously under-reported). Even so, they highlight a critical need to better understand the cause(s) of disease development and progression – such that effective interventions can be devised."

"Gold rush" is usually associated the western United States - California, Nevada, and Colorado. The southeast section of the nation is known more for its rice, textiles, tobacco, indigo, and cotton. This area, though, is where it all began with gold in this country. The United States' first gold rush, in fact, is said to have started with the discovery of a 7.7-kg (17-1b) nugget in the Piedmont section of the Carolinas in 1799, some 50 years before the rush to California. The Carolina gold rush continued intermittently through 1942 when the Federal Government shut down all gold operations. Strong gold prices throughout the early part of this decade and new extractive technologies spurred a small resurgence of gold operations in South Carolina. Mind you, this is not Nevada with its flood of geologists and mining companies. Nor are there any 7.7 kg (17 lb) nuggets being discovered. But Ridgeway Mining Co., a joint venture between Kennecott Corp. and Galactic Resources, has set about mining 51 Mt (56 million st) of low-grade ore containing an estimated 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) of recoverable gold. The open pit, carbon-in-leach operation is located near the town of Ridgeway in South Carolina, about 32 km (20 miles) north of Columbia. Carolina gold North and east of Ridgeway, Piedmont Mining Co. operates the historic Haile gold mine near Kershaw, SC. And Brewer Mining Co. operates the nearby Brewer deposit. Between 1829 and 1942, South Carolina gold mines produced 10 t (318,800 oz) of gold. It all began in 1799 when Conrad Reed, son of a German immigrant farmer, found the 7.7 kg (17 lb) nugget in Little Meadow Creek, NC. His father thought the rock was worthless and used it as a doorstop, so the story goes. It took nearly three years before Conrad's father decided his doorstop was indeed gold. Gold was later discovered in the Greenville district of South Carolina. And, in 1828, Benjamin Haile discovered gold in a stream that ran through his property in Lancaster County, SC. Haile's mine became South Carolina's most famous and most productive gold mine, producing more than 7.8 t (250,000 oz). At first, miners worked the stream beds of Haile's property. Later, lode deposits were discovered on slopes alongside the creeks. They would lease 4.6 ml (50 sq ft) lots and mine as deep as 7.6 m (25 ft). During the Civil War, the Confeder-

Progress, future challenges, and the continual search for more efficient and rapid methods of excavating underground openings and shafts were main themes at the 1983 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) held June 12-16 in Chicago, IL. The event, jointly sponsored by the Society of Mining Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the Engineering Institute of Canada, offered a diverse program for both civil and mining engineering disciplines. Although all papers given at the three-day conference were noteworthy contributions, and each is included in the conference proceedings currently available from SME, there were a few sessions that had particular mining-related interest. Research, Acceptance Needed for Water-Jet Technology Water-jet-assisted rock excavation is seen by some as a technology moving from the prototype phase to a fully developed, accepted system within the next decade. For an industry that is traditionally fairly slow in accepting significant changes, this development appears especially noteworthy. However, speakers at the water-jet technology session generally agreed that many large US manufacturers are not viewing water-jet-assisted equipment as viable replacements for all-mechanical systems. This, they fear, may mean some US manufacturers will lose a significant share of certain equipment markets to foreign competitors who are moving aggressively ahead in this area. Despite the advantages of increased cutting rates, reduced power requirements, less dust, prolonged bit life, and reduced sparking in many cutting situations, water-jet technology applied to mining is apparently having some acceptance problems in the US. R. J. Evans, professor of industrial engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, noted that there are several perceptual barriers to water-jet coal cutting; such as uncertainties concerning the fu¬ture demand for coal and the reliability of equipment, apprehensions that jet-assisted equipment will make the mine operator dependent on specific types of hard-to-obtain equipment, and fears about accessibility of the equipment for repairs. Evans also said numerous parameters need defining before taking advantage of water-jet-assisted cutting systems in under-ground coal mining in the US. For the cutting head, information must be obtained on optimum bit geometry and spacing, and maximum and minimum torque requirements. For a complete US water-jet cutting system, Evans added, research is needed to establish optimum jet pressures, jet powers, number of jets per bit, and location of jets relative to the bit. Operators depend upon the success of backfilling programs to ensure that mine activities run continuously (Archibald et al, 1993) where backfilling is an integral part of the mining cycle. In order to ensure that the backfill is prepared and delivered to the stope possessing the required engineering properties, as designed, and that the backfilling process is safe, mine operators at all stages of the backfilling system must be adequately trained for their tasks and be aware of how their work affects other backfilling stages, both up- and down-stream of their station. Mine operator training is primarily based on learning on-the-job from experienced supervisors or training personnel. Classroom training and the availability of reference manuals are less common. While in use by many industries for some time now, computer-based training (CBT) is becoming more readily accepted by the mining industry for a wide variety of training. It is not intended to replace on-the-job training, but to augment it. CBT offers many advantages to enhance operator learning by utilizing multimedia presentations, interactions and on-line testing to teach complex concepts and relationships. Discussions with many operations revealed that there is an industry need for a backfill guide for frontline operator training and as a reference manual for operators and mine engineers. Sponsored by the mining industry and the CIM, "Mine Backfill, An Operator's Guide" has been developed by the Departments of Mining Engineering at Queen's University and McGill University to fulfil this need. "Mine Backfill, An Operator's Guide" is an interactive multimedia package that incorporates high quality colour images, animations, sound, and video with text to review the main backfill methods employed in Canada, including hydraulic/slurry, paste and rock fill. The Guide is divided into training and reference primer sections. When in training mode, the operator is guided through a presentation of common mining and backfill practices and technologies so that he/she may become more familiar with different aspects of backfill processes. To ensure that key concepts have been learned during training, the operator will be tested after each section using a series of multiple choice and true/false questions. When in reference mode, alternatively, the operator may browse through the information in a more detailed and independent fashion through a series of interactive menus. The Guide focuses on the following main topics: resources, surface preparation, distribution, stope activities, health and safety, and quality control. Special features included in the Operator's Guide are a Buyer's Guide, a Trouble Shooting Guide, and an interactive glossary of backfill and mining terms. Concepts in interactive and computer-based learning are also reviewed in this paper.

The increasing volume of wastes being generated by industry is a legacy of the industrial revolution and subsequent industrial growth. Social and regulatory pressures have been mounting on industry to improve its waste management practices. In many industrial sectors, waste disposal has been the only method of waste management. Land farming, underground burial, deep wells and incineration are still practiced. Often, concentration and volume reduction of waste streams are also practiced to reduce the waste management costs. In the recent years, there has been emphasis on waste minimization. Since the 19th century, industry has practiced recycling of usable resources as a way of handling unwanted byproducts. The mining industry has recovered or extracted economic minerals from tailings for decades. For example, during the gold rush period of 1970s, extraction of gold from tailings dams became economically attractive. Similarly, when it was economical, coal and shale fractions have also been recovered from tailings and refuge materials for commercial uses. In the steel industry, with the development of new furnace technology, recycling of flue dust and scrap iron was practiced as early as in the 19th century. Before 1900, there was little incentive for the industry to reduce the waste volumes. Manufacturers, however, did see a rationale for adopting profit-increasing techniques. They made an effort to recover and recycle economic materials from waste sources. One of the pioneering examples of resource recovery is the coke making industry. As the industry was market driven, products recycled from coke batteries included ammonia for use in fertilizers, gas for power generation and heating, and tar for road construction, wood preservation and roofing. Tar had been avery troublesome waste byproduct. But it quickly became a valuable chemical raw material, providing the foundation for Germany's dominance of the world's dye and medicine markets before World War I. Similar trends evolved in the chemical industry. In the context of current environmental regulations and escalating mining and processing costs, recycling of re- [ ] sources is becoming economically more attractive. Solid and liquid wastes generated by industries contain a range of inorganic and organic contaminants. Among these contaminants, metals and hydrocarbons form major groups. Treatment of these wastes is essential to meet regulatory disposal requirements. In the recent years, based on the principles of chemical and mineral process engineering, processes have been developed to treat these industrial wastes. This article reviews some of the processes that have made impacts and have proven to be effective at commercial scales.
