In order to find the behavior of dewatered unconsolidated strata during the process of injecting water through a borehole, a new type of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system was successfully used for the real-time strain monitoring of unconsolidated strata during a water injection process for a dewatered unconsolidated strata of a coal mine. The unconsolidated strata water injection test was implemented through a borehole at a depth of +115.83 to +135.15m. The employed FBG strain monitoring system and ground water level observation system were installed at the depth in the unconsolidated strata where the water injection was conducted through two different boreholes. The water injection pressures in the test were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3MPa respectively, and the total water injection volume was 4226.84m3. The relationships between the water injection pressures, water injection volume and the strain change of the unconsolidated strata, the stress and strain conditions of the unconsolidated strata before and after water injection, were analyzed. This paper presents the results of these tests, and shows that the dewatering compression of the unconsolidated strata is reduced with increasing water injection pressures and water injection volumes. Comparing the stress-strain conditions before and after water injection, it is found that the stress of the water injection strata is in tension, which confirms the theory that the settlement of the thick unconsolidated strata is directly caused by the reduction of ground water levels. The high sensitivity and stability of the FBG monitoring system used was able to realize the real-time strain monitoring of the water injection process within a deep unconsolidated strata. This FBG monitoring system and the test results presented are very important for understanding further treatment of settlement in unconsolidated strata.

Introduction Researchers have long speculated regarding the adsorption state of collectors on mineral surfaces. Only recently have analytical techniques become available that allow direct in situ analysis of adsorbed layers. With reactive internal reflection elements (IREs), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IR/IRS) allows for unobtrusive investigation of the adsorbed layer (Harrick, 1979). This technique has been used both for the in situ identification of adsorbed species and for the direct calculation of collector adsorption density in real time from infrared spectral data (Miller and Kellar. 1988). The reactive mineral IRE serves both to internally reflect the infrared light and to act as a substrate at which collector adsorption can be monitored. Shown in Fig. I is a schematic of light being internally reflected in an IRE. As the light is totally reflected at the interface, an evanescent wave propagates a short distance (typically a few microns) away from the IRE, and sampling of the interfacial region occurs. Because of multiple internal reflections, great sensitivity can be obtained. Flotation systems for which this method has been demonstrated include CaF2/oleate, Al2O3/dodecylsulfate, CaCO3/oleate, ZnS/xanthate and KCI/octylamine (Miller and Kellar, 1988; Kellar et al., 1989, 1990; Miller et al., 1990). Of particular interest to flotation chemists is the conformational behavior of the alkyl chain of adsorbed collector molecules. In the simplest sense, conformation can bethought of as the relative flexibility of the hydrocarbon chain caused by rotations about carbon-carbon single bonds. The flexibility is described by the amount of gauche/trans conformations in the alkyl chain. Figure 2 shows examples of gauche and trans conformations (rotational isomers or rotamers) in a hydrocarbon chain. These two conformations are observed when the terminal methylene groups in any four-carbon subchain are on the same side (gauche) or opposites sides (trans) of the plane of the middle carbon-carbon bond. A gauche conformer (rotamer) is thus a state of maximum potential energy, whereas a trans conformer is a state with minimum potential energy. The difference between these states has been found to be approximately 0.5 to 0.8 kcal/mole (Mead et al., 1986). The relative number of butane molecules present as gauche conformers with respect to trans conformers can be calculated from the Boltzmann equation (Mead et al., 1986). At 25° C approximately 66% of the butane molecules are trans rotamers. [ ] However at 100° C, only 33% of butane molecules are trans rotamers. Exposing the hydrocarbon chain to a polar, rather than an a polar, medium should also cause an increase in the number of gauche butylene groups in a hydrocarbon chain, although this effect has been difficult to observe experimentally (Mead et al., 1986). Forming a crystalline hydrocarbon is equivalent to decreasing the temperature, which greatly increases the amount of trans butylene groups present in the chain. From the preceding discussion, a picture of the solution species of concern can be developed. The collector monomer should exhibit the greatest number of gauche rotamers and most likely will look crumpled or balled-up to reduce the surface area in contact with water. The micellar form is expected to be aggregated, with the hydrocarbon chain existing in a less polar environment. These characteristic conformational features have been examined by FT-IR spectroscopy for various liquid phases of alkanoic acids (Umemura et al., 1981; Cameron et al., 1982a; Yang et al., 1986; Wong, 1987; Wong and Mantsch, 1983; Cross et al., 1992), phospholipid membranes (Fringe Ii, 1980; Casal and Mantsch, 1985: Wong et al.. 1988;

It is uncommon these days to read a business magazine or newspaper without finding a reference to Knowledge Management (KM), and its critical importance to corporate success. One definition of KM is: “getting the right knowledge to the right people at the right time and helping them to put information into action in such ways that strive to improve organizational performance.” In the minerals processing industry we could assert that we have been practicing this for years through effective operator training. In most cases we would probably be wrong. Training has certainly filled the need of addressing safety and basic operational issues, but we must collectively focus on education (learning), and the difference, as measured in outcomes, is not at all subtle. This paper briefly examines the history of training and education in the mining industry, and looks in more detail at the impact of one company’s approach to empower its workforce, while keeping the ultimate goal clearly in mind: “The great end of knowledge is not knowledge, but action.” (T.H. Slurry diaphragm walls are commonly used as both temporary excavation support walls, and permanent structural walls, for circular shafts and long rectangular structures (such as underground subway stations); however, they are not commonly used for more compact rectangular or square shafts. In these instances, a second wall is typically cast inside the slurry walls to form the permanent structure. This paper discusses the approach used on the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in California to analyze these compact rectangular types of structures for static and seismic loading, and to determine whether or not slurry walls can be confidently used as both the temporary and permanent walls for two tunnel ventilation shafts.

An economic, real-time probe drill monitoring system was developed for Metropolitan Water District’s Arrowhead Tunnels project to quantitatively evaluate ground conditions ahead of a TBM. This system digitally records hydraulic feed, rotation, and percussion pressures and calculates drill advance rates during drilling. These data are computer synthesized to develop a digital representation of the ground ahead, and the resulting “picture” of the ground is distributed to the project team to assist with tunnel construction decisions (i.e., targeting grout holes, optimizing mine-cycle lengths, and avoiding becoming stuck). The analysis and interpretation procedure has now been calibrated and refined using over 5,000 m (3 miles) of geologic face mapping data.

The 79th Street Water Tunnel Extension Project was initially designed by the City of Chicago, Department of Public Works, to increase the capacity of the City’s south side water distribution system. MWH preformed a design review, prepared the final design and provided construction management for the City of Chicago Department of Water. Construction commenced in September 1995 and was completed in October 1999. The Project connected two existing water tunnels with a new 5.8 km (19,044 ft.) long, 4.9 m (16.08 ft.) finished diameter concrete lined rock tunnel utilizing TBM, drill-blast and mechanical hoe-ramming methods. In addition, approximately 61 meters(200 feet) of concrete lined variable cross section tunnel, a new gate shaft and a temporary construction shaft were constructed. This paper describes the construction of these features and the geological conditions encountered.

Preliminary recommendations for the Upper Northwest Interceptor 1&2 specified installation of reinforced concrete pipe using pipe-jacking methods. However, a larger one-pass tunnel constructed using precast segmental lining would provide additional storage volume. The risk of encountering unexpected conditions or events and the resulting cost impacts could differ significantly for these two options. A probabilistic life-cycle cost analysis of these alternatives was performed. This paper discusses the construction alternatives considered, the risk assessment methodology used to evaluate these alternatives, the input parameters and risk factors used in this analysis, and the recommended project which is currently being constructed.

INTRODUCTION The placement of concrete by means of pumping is one of the fastest growing practices in the construction industry and is widely used in mining applications. In¬troduced in the United States in 1933, this method has been adapted to many aspects of the industry, especially where space for equipment is either limited or inaccessi¬ble. Concrete pumping offers many advantages over other methods of placement. Using pumping equipment, the concrete mixture can be transported in a single operation from a central mixing site to numerous forms in many remote locations, eliminating the need for rehandling the mixture and reducing the labor costs to a minimum. Pressurized pumping provides an extra mix¬ing and blending step, resulting in concrete of improved uniformity and greater density. In turn, this produces high compressive strength and increased durability. Various placement defects can be reduced or pre¬vented by pumping. The steady and even flow of the concrete minimizes the form distortion and delays caused by vibration problems that are common to fast dumping of the concrete mixes. Segregation, planes of weakness, bleeding, and surface faults are diminished considerably. Perhaps the greatest advantages of concrete pump¬ing are the distances and volumes that can be handled. Depending upon the equipment used, pumping rates of from 8 to 115 m'j/h (10 to 150 cu yd per hr) can be achieved, with a horizontal range of up to 460 m (1500 ft) and a vertical range of up to 140 m (450 ft). Theoretically, almost any concrete mixture could be pumped. However, consistency is an important consid¬eration for efficient operation. Mixes that are too wet, too dry, too hard, or poorly graded can cause difficulties that increase the costs. Similarly, mixes containing aggregate material that is over the maximum size or that is porous and highly absorptive can also result in diffi¬culties and increased costs. For the best efficiency, the mix formulation must have a well-graded sand and aggregate combination, with enough fines to provide flowability. If additional water is required for pumping, additional cement must be used to meet the design criteria of the structure. Each pump manufacturer can provide recommended mix formulations for the specific equipment furnished. Since the 1950s, many improvements have been made in pumping technology. Originally, only rigid steel pipe of 168 to 245 mm (6.625 to 9.625 in.) diam was used; today, both rigid steel pipe and flexible conduit are available in diameters of from 76 to 203 mm (3.0 to 8.0 in.). Improved pumps have been developed, and the introduction of power-coordinated booms has in¬creased the versatility of concrete pumping. The older and more conventional placement methods can no longer compete with the flexibility, efficiency, and econ¬omy of the pumping method, and continued research and development can only improve the system and expand its use throughout the mining industry. PUMPING EQUIPMENT The three major types of concrete pumping units currently available are the piston pumps, the pneumatic pumps, and the squeeze-type pumps. Table I provides a comparison of capacities, horizontal ranges, and vertical ranges for pumps of all three types. Belt turnovers are commonly used in conveyors to rotate the belt so that the clean side of the belt contacts the return idlers. The belt turnover length has traditionally been sized on only the twisting stresses. However, belt turnovers are also subjected to bending stresses due to the weight of the belt. Although bending stresses have in the past been ignored, these stresses are significant and should not be neglected. This paper quantifies and presents a method for calculated twisting and bending stresses and also the belt sag.

The major developments in fine coal processing in Australia are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the approaches taken by various Australian coal producers to improve the recovery of the coarse size fractions (minus 0.5 plus 0.25mm) and upgrade the selectivity of flotation at ultrafine sizes (minus 0.075mm). The effects on fine coal preparation of flotation circuit changes, the influence of physical and chemical variables on coarse coal flotation and the impact of spiral concentrators and column flotation, are discussed. Reference is also made to the development of oil agglomeration technology for the treatment of fine coal refuse and some of the factors which have led to its current demise.

The complexation of Alizarin Red S (ARS) at the surface of hydrous fluorapatite particles has been investigated at 25.0 C by means of potentiometric titrations, adsorption experiments in 0.1 M NaCI ionic medium, and Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform spectroscopy (DRIFT) studies. A chemical model describing the reaction at the aqueous mineral surface has been established under equilibrium conditions according to the reaction [== -CaOH2 + HA2 - « _ =PO CaA2 - z + H30&apos;; to (int.) = -5.61 ± 0.02 3 a =PO- logBs-1110(int.) ( ) within the range 8.40 <_ -log[H ] <_ 9.80.] Experimental data were evaluated using the computer program FITEQL on the basis of a constant capacitance model for the electric double layer. The surface complex structure, has been proposed to involve the quinoid and alpha phenolic oxygens of ARS coordinated to the calcium sites on the fluorapatite surface.

Flow rate into the thickener or clarifier a) As the flow rate increases into the thickener or clarifier ?retention time? decreases which causes a greater affect hydraulically on the settling solids. So as the flow rate increases it will generally mean an increase in flocculant dosing rate. b) As the flow rate decreases into the thickener or clarifier the retention time increases which reduces the hydraulic affect on settling, improving settling rates. This will generally mean that as the flow rate decreases, we will decrease the flocculant dose rate.

Education and research have always followed production in the mineral industry. Almost all of the leading mineral education and research units in the world today are in developed countries which had strong mining industries created during the 19th and 20th centuries to meet the demands for minerals due to the Indus- trial Revolution. It is in those countries where the main advances in mining and metallurgical technologies have occurred. But it is in the developing countries, often with traditions which have not favoured engineering initiatives, that the mineral industry is growing. Legislative changes and high exploration expenditures in many of those countries are of such a nature that many mineral discoveries will be made and mines and plants built in them during the next decades. Developments must be accompanied by increased activities in education, research and technology transfer in mining and processing, particularly those which are computer based. Malaysia is a developing country with the objective of achieving developed status by 2020. It has a short history of tertiary education and industrial research and a growing mineral industry. It is now building the education and research programs which will give strong support to its mineral industry. The progress which is being made in the computer based components of these pro- grams, and the factors which influence them, are discussed.

he Broken Aro coal mine is located at the Woodbury Wildlife Preserve 11 km (7 miles) west of Coshocton, OH on State Route 541. Underground min¬ing at the 16-hm2 (40-acre) site took place during the 1910s. During the past five years, surface mining has occurred along the western and northern perimeters of the underground region. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), R&F Coal and American Electric Power (AEP) are involved in a project to remine the abandoned underground complex. The program also includes installing a mine seal made of fixated flue gas desulfurization (FGD) material. Previous mining activity in this area has resulted in an acid mine drainage (AMD) problem on portions of the reserve. In particular, a prominent AMD source is present in the Simmons Run drainage. The project goal is to eliminate or reduce the AMD that is discharging into the watershed. It was initially hoped that the Simmons Run drainage area could be economically mined. Accordingly, this area was included in the mine permit. However, experience with other previously mined areas on this reserve showed that the old mine workings were more extensive than originally thought. Old mine workings present several problems. The most significant are reduced coal recovery, poor coal quality and AMD liability. All of these problems increase mining costs. And the more extensive the old workings, the more significant the increase in cost. Based on R&F&apos;s experience with old mine workings in this area, it was decided that economic recovery of the Simmons Run drainage reserve was not possible. As a result, R&F excluded the Simmons Run drainage area from its early mine plans. Some time after it was decided not to affect the Simmons Run drainage area, R&F and ODNR&apos;s Division of Mining and Reclamation discussed the possibility of removing this area from the permit and attempting to correct the AMD problem as an Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) project. Specifically, the discussion centered around mining through a portion of the old mine workings to expose the mine openings in the highwall. Once exposed, the mine openings would be sealed using FGD material from the nearby Conesville power plant operated by AEP. In addition, there was interest in reclaiming the old tipple and associated gob pile located adjacent to Coshocton County Road 17 on the opposite side of Simmons Run. R&F attempted to eliminate the AMD problem by sealing the mine openings with FGD material. Once the seals were installed, they were covered with overburden. Monitoring wells were installed to determine the effectiveness of the seal and the inundation progress in the old mine workings as well as monitoring the quality of ground water. The project was jointly funded by revenue from the sale of the coal recovered during the project and AML funds. The FGD seal is expected to cause well water levels to increase above preseal elevations. However, the additional head pressure due to increased water depths in the underground mine may cause seepage through the bottom of the mine or out through the perimeter. The in¬creased water depth in the underground mine is expected to cause lower oxygen concentrations in the underground mine water. Since acidity is produced by oxidation of iron pyrites, less oxygen should result in better quality water. Monitoring wells will be installed before seal installation so that pre- and postseal water levels and well water quality can be determined. Surface sampling locations will be identified. These will be monitored before and after seal placement.

Spent potliner is generated in the electrolytic process of reducing alumina to make aluminum metal using molten fluoride electrolytes. Spent potliner (SPL), obtained at the end of the pots life contains a small amount of cyanide and fluoride which present environmental problems. SPL became a listed hazardous waste under RCRA (KO88) in July, 1990. One of the possible uses of spent potliner is as a substitute for Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) as a fluidizer in iron- and steelmaking and in the glass industry. A low viscosity and a low melting point are prime requirements for accomplishing the above. In the present study, viscosity measurements were performed. Effect of various additives, such as sand, limestone, dicalcium silicate dust, and MgO baghouse dust on the viscosity of SPL was studied. The results showed that with the addition of sand and limestone, very high fluidity of SPL melt can be obtained at significantly low temperatures. The results suggest that spent potliner mixed with additives could potentially be used as a substitute fluidizer.

Several industry trends are putting new demands on surface mining equipment. This is true both on the “hard” side of the equipment business - the research and product development programs, and on the “soft” side - the business processes, human resources and competitive strategies. This article describes seven key industry trends and the impact each is having on surface mining equipment suppliers. 1. Globalization Earth-spanning technologies are shrinking the world into an economic village, causing corporations to think and plan on a global scale. This “globalization” is one of the great buzzwords of the 1990s, meaning precisely whatever the user says it means. In this case, let us take it to mean that political boundaries arc less restrictive than in the past, permitting mining companies new freedom to roam the globe for ore bodies. Evolving out of this are global mining houses that have ownership and management interests in labyrinthian webs of mines spanning the world. There are several impacts on surface mining equipment suppliers.

This paper shows that if a drift has a brattice which is sufficiently leaky, changes in the operating point of the fan depend solely on the volumetric efficiency within the drift. Under this high leakage condition, an increase in the length of the drift causes very little shift in the fan operating point. For less leaky brattices, the operating point depends on both the fan characteristic curve and the volumetric efficiency. It is shown that for the fan curve and drift parameters used in this paper the fan operating point in a drift with a volumetric efficiency of 50% is essentially the same as a drift which has a zero efficiency. In this region of efficiency, an increase of 300% in the length of the drift causes only a 3% increase in fan operating pressure.

Cameco Corp. operates uranium mills and tailings management facilities at its Key Lake and Rabbit Lake operations in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada. Development at both mine sites began in the 1970s, with initial tailings deposition occurring within above-ground impoundments, which was common for these facilities at the time. As open pits became available at each site, and mining continued at other orebodies in the area, tailings management shifted to in-pit facilities to meet stakeholder expectations and improve the long-term security and environmental performance of tailings management at these facilities. The in-pit facility at Rabbit Lake (receiving tailings since 1984; Fig. 1), was one of the first (if not the first) engineered in-pit tailings facilities in the world and adopted a full pervious surround design concept with subaerial deposition. Under this concept, permeable sand and coarse rock are placed at the base of the pit, around its perimeter, as well as overlying the tailings at closure to promote regional groundwater flow bypassing the lower-permeability tailings. In contrast, at Key Lake, the in-pit facility (receiving tailings since 1996) adopted a partial pervious surround design concept. Under this concept, permeable materials were again placed at the base of the pit, and partway up the side walls; although for the upper portion of the tailings, the material is placed directly against the natural geologic materials. In the Key Lake case, the natural geologic environment provided the required bypassing of the tailings deposit to achieve the desired environmental performance while the base drain again facilitated pumping during operations to achieve consolidation objectives (Fig. 2). In both the initial design of the facilities, and through more than several decades of operation, it is clear that although in-pit tailings facilities provide common benefits with respect to long-term geotechnical stability, it is critical that their design approach take into consideration site-specific conditions

Computer based techniques for solving the Ultimate Pit Limit Problem have appeared in mining literature since the early 1960&apos;s. The majority of papers pertaining to this subject can be partitioned into one of two categories: discussion of the pros and cons of a particular algorithm, or a case study presenting specific applications of an algorithm. Subsequently, there has a1 so been considerable debate concerning the best techniques between, essentially, two camps: those favoring the moving cones techniques, and those favoring the techniques which yield true optimal pit designs. The purpose of this paper is not to add to this debate, but rather to present a few new ideas (partially a new look at an old idea), which can be easily implemented to noticeably improve any ultimate pit limit approach independent of the particular algorithm used. These ideas fall under the heading of "bounding the optimum" (Barnes and Johnson, 1980).
