A three-dimension two-phase (air and dust) computer model was developed to model air velocity and respirable dust distributions in the longwall faces. This paper describes the derivation of the model including the model features, mathematical equations and boundary conditions. Example simulations were also performed for two longwall faces where measured respirable dust and air velocity distributions were available. The results indicated the model can simulate the mine conditions fairly accurately.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, the author has been asked by several mining companies and mining publications to share some of his insights on how the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) and Pentagon might affect the mining industry globally. Until now, the author has been reluctant to express his thoughts in a publication that could possibly fall into the hands of terrorists and give them some ideas that they may not have been previously considering. However, the author discussed the contents of this article with several friends and acquaintances in the international intelligence community. They said that nothing commented on here is new to the terrorists. Potential terrorist targets Sources within the worldwide intelligence gathering community have told the author that current intelligence data indicates that it is likely that the Islamic fundamentalist groups responsible for the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001will likely be directing their effort at foreign business entities. Any overseas or any domestic businesses of highly visible companies that are part of the anti-terrorism alliance should consider themselves a potential target.

Unsegregated pyritic uranium mill tailings from Elliot Lake, Ontario, with and without limestone amendment, were subjected to column leaching experiments for the purposes of predicting the onset of acidic drainage and the magnitude of metal and radionuclide release under various treatment and control strategies. The unamended tailings produced acidic drainage after approximately one and a half year. The tailings mixed with various grain-sized limestone did not produce acidic drainage during the study period. The tailings consist essentially of quartz, K-feldspar, muscovite and pyrite. The unsegregated tailings amended with very fine limestone displayed the least amounts of pyrite loss whereas those without limestone amendment had the greatest pyrite losses. Predicted onset of acid generation varied from 16 to 75 years for the top sections and in most cases greater than 100 years for bottom sections of the unsegregated tailings with limestone amendments. Unsegregated tailings mixed with fine- and very fine-grained limestone proved to be the most effective in controlling or delaying the onset of acidic drainage under unsaturated conditions.

Microseismic monitoring and evaluation is one aspect of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research program. Roof falls are often preceded by a period of elevated microseismic activity, but not all periods of elevated activity result in a roof fall, nor do all roof falls occur after some amount of elevated activity. The objective of this study is to review periods of elevated microseismic activity and determine whether fracture activity rate can be used to anticipate the initiation of roof falls. The study was carried out at an underground limestone mine where major roof falls are associated with excessive horizontal stress. The progression of roof falls was detected by the microseismic signature produced by the rock falling from the mine roof onto the mine floor, which is termed a roof fall impact event. A total of nine elevated fracture activity periods that resulted in seven major roof falls were examined. It was observed that elevated fracture activity preceded the initial roof fall impact event in three out of four major roof falls. The initial impact event was not identified for the remaining three roof falls. Fracture event rates were analyzed and a roof fall alarm trigger of five fracture events in a ten minute time period was established for this test case. The fall alarm trigger was tested against six of the elevated activity periods. Four roof falls occurred in the six periods of elevated activity, and two would have triggered the alarm before the roof fall occurred, while two false alarms were generated. The results show that limited success would have been achieved by the microseismic system as a roof fall alarm trigger. However, the trigger would have been successful at warning of the onset of elevated activity, allowing mine employees to respond appropriately. The study highlighted some issues with implementing such a system in an operating mine, including the need for real time identification of fracture related microseismic signals among mining induced signals, and accurate location and identification of fracture clustering.

This paper reviews commercial installations of FLOTAIRE Column Flotation Machines for metallic, nonmetallic, and coal flotation. Second generation FLOTAIRE Column Flotation Machines employ dual aeration systems to provide a mixture of air bubble sizes. Operating data presented in this paper shows that optimum grade and recovery relationship for each rougher, cleaner, and scavenger application are obtained by adjusting the ratio and volume of aspirator air bubbles and micro diffuser air bubbles.

On November 15, 1990, President Bush signed the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The new legislation is sweeping in its demands for cuts in smog, acid deposition, toxic air pollutants and ozone-depleting chemicals. The Amendments will siqnificantly alter air quality permitting and compliance and are estimted to cost billions of dollars to implement. This article provides an overview and summary of each of the eleven titles of the Amendments. It also addresses how the Amendments will be implemented.

A slope stability study for the Annie Creek and Foley Ridge Mines was undertaken to provide Wharf Resources, Inc. with a technical assessment of the stability of the slope for an overall pit slope angle of 60°. A rock analysis of the most critical and persistent combination of discontinuities was carried out using probabilistic methods. A detailed discontinuity mapping and assessment of the rock mass provided the orientation data used in this study. The orientation data were reduced and analyzed to identify the discontinuity sets. A statistical analysis provided information about the distribution of the data. A deterministic wedge stability analysis identified the critical combination of discontinuities; those with a low factor of safety were further studied using probabilistic kinematic and kinetic stability analyses. The results from this approach were used to obtain the reliability or probability of failure of the slopes.

A computer-oriented systems simulator (CMHS) has been developed for analysis of continuous materials handling systems. Special emphasis has been placed in the model on several features which are unique to these systems. These features include periodic pattern of material arrival from several sources, several types of material to be transferred, material dispatch processes, intermediate storage capacities, and multiple material destinations. Both the deterministic factors of the continuous material handling system such as the physical decomposition of the system and the scheme and schedule of its operation and the stochastic factors such as variations of material arrival, material pattern on the conveyor, and avail-abilities of the system elements are considered in the simulator.

Loaders and dump trucks are the most commonly used surface-mining equipment. Negligence of the safety-engineering aspects of dump trucks may result in serious accidents in a mine. A reduction in the risk of an accident due to the deployment of trucks can he achieved by engineering analysis, risks assessment, improved safety features, active safety devices, condition-based maintenance, in-built protection systems, etc. This paper presents some cases of accidents in Indian surface coal mines and advocates a systems approach to safety.

Queensland?s underground coal industry, as a whole, has arguably the best gas monitoring systems in the world. Each mine utilizes real time, tube bundle and onsite ultra fast gas chromatograph systems. Queensland?s mining legislation has specific requirements for mine gas monitoring but there is no requirement for all three techniques. Industry has however identified the need for all three and adopted this as a standard, resulting in over sixty thousand gas results collected each day. Automated monitoring systems are programmed to alarm for gas concentrations, gas ratios and explosibility. These alarms are then used to initiate predetermined actions to take control of the situation and prevent the compromise of safety to workers and the loss of resources. Dedicated software packages have been developed to assist in the interpretation of the large volume of results generated. The real time systems are used for real time warning, essential for incidents such as belt fires. Tube bundle systems suit long term trending used for identification of the onset of spontaneous combustion or for the determination of explosibility during the routine sealing of worked areas. Gas chromatograph analysis is used to provide a complete analysis and provides results for hydrogen and ethylene, key gases used in the assessment of spontaneous combustion. It is also crucial during significant spontaneous combustion events and coal fires to use gas chromatography to determine the explosibility status of the underground atmosphere otherwise the severity of the situation is likely to be under estimated. This paper outlines the need for all three techniques for assessing the underground status and outlines advantages and disadvantages of each.

Cyprus Metals' Sierrita mine is located in the Pima Mining District, Pima County, Arizona (Fig. 1), which is one of the largest known porphyry copper districts. The ore body is part of a large mineralized system that includes Cyprus' adjoining Esperanza mine. The copper and molybdenum grades being mined at Sierrita make it one of the two lowest grade porphyry copper mines in the world Mineral production from the district was first recorded in 1876. Copper from replacement deposits in carbonate rocks and copper¬-lead-zinc from veins in volcanic rocks were mined from several deposits. However, it was not until 1957 that the district commenced to become a major copper producer with the beginning of production from the Pima mine, which was the first open pit operation. Since that time, seven other open pit mines have come into production. Because of the variable copper prices and high operating costs, not all of the mines are operating today. A map of certain outcrops, plutons, and open pits, as well as older underground mining operations, in the Pima district is shown in Fig. 2.

In 1978, Congress established a series of mineral institutes for a limited time to assist financially in mineral industry education and research. Later, education and research were separated, establishing generic institutes for specialized research that transferred the former research budget from the base mineral institutes program. One of the generic institutes is the Mine Systems Design and Ground Control (MSDGC). It provides for research funding specifically for mining. Other parallel generic institutes were established in pyrometallurgy, comminution, waste management, etc. MSDGC was established at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University(VPI). The founding group included the University of Alabama, University of Kentucky, University of Nevada Reno, University of Idaho and University of Alaska reporting through VPI to the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and Congress. Other universities also participated on an ad hoc basis.

High performance sprayed concrete equipment installed on two 9.4 m diameter hard rock TBMs enabled a continuous sprayed concrete lining for the entire contour in both tunnels to be performed concurrently with the advancing TBMs. Innovative layout of the sprayed concrete arrangements comprised ring beam constructions each with two independent spraying robots. Each of the spraying robots were independently connected to sprayed concrete pumps, as well as a high capacity concrete logistics system on the backup. The mix designs focused on long open-time, excellent pumpability and tough requirements on strength development. The achieved output capacities of the sprayed concrete amounts to an average of 15 m3 per hour. Peak capacities of 24 m3 per hour have been realized.

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and these data change as internal and external conditions evolve. Staffing turnover hinders experienced-based decisions especially with simple tools like spreadsheets. Lack of current information can contribute to decisions that result in significant deterioration in the quality of operation. Timely, unified information from sophisticated analyses presented to the broadest possible reach will improve operation. The major innovation is the addition of the web browser to the suite of software people will use with no training – the other two are spreadsheets and graphical presentations – and the consistent organization and transformation of the real time data to support broad access. This paper describes the data transformations and presentation methods necessary for a Web view, especially the special needs of real time data and analysis required for active operations decision-making. Many people inside and outside the complex, not just operators, need timely information that is abstracted, aggregated, organized and unified. Unification and aggregation of real time data presented via the Web opens a new paradigm for collaboration. The analysis tools are as important as the data. These rule-based tools add significantly to the operations database in the form of results stored for viewing with plant data. Mining and metallurgical plants already use many sophisticated analysis tools such as predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis vibration analysis, and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. These add real time events, similar to an alarm package, and unified production information to the operational database. Simple models are used on line to create key indices that provide a real time indication of performance. Key indices include metrics for losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency, and overall process equipment effectiveness. These additional data in the operations database are used for early fault detection, increased production, better quality, higher availability of equipment and faster detection of process bottlenecks. An important feature is the ability for people to create their own key indices and store the results for use by anyone in the plant historian, but accessible by a browser. Kinetics studies and other rate measurements are reviewed in the amine extraction of uranium and of some other related and associated metal ions. Equilibration' is relatively fast in the uranium sulfate systems most important to uranium-hydrometallurgy. Significantly slow; equilibration-has ' been encountered' in some other systems. Most of the recorded rate information, both qualitative and quantitative; has come from exploratory and, process-development development work, while some kinetics studies have been directed specifically toward elucidation of, extraction mechanisms. In contrast to some other extraction systems, relatively little attention has been given to the kinetics of uranium extraction by amines. This is because investigators have not been troubled by slow extractions. Instead, when rate limitations have been of concern in amine extraction (Amex) process developments, they have been mainly from slow phase disengagement rather than from slow equilibration. Nevertheless, taking uranium together with several other elements that are closely related to it or associated with it in typical processes, a considerable body of rate information has been recorded.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has investigated various factor effects on cab air filtration system performance. Factors experimentally investigated were intake filter efficiency, intake air leakage, intake filter loading (filter flow resistance), recirculation filter use, and wind penetration. Adding an intake pressurizer fan to the filtration system was also investigated. Results indicate that the intake filter efficiency and recirculation filter were the two most influential factors on cab protection performance. Use of a recirculation filter significantly reduced cab penetration over the intake air filter by itself due to the multiplicable filtration of the cab interior air. Cab penetration was also affected to a lesser extent by intake filter loading and air leakage. Adding an intake pressurizer fan notably increased intake airflow and cab pressure while providing only minor changes to cab penetration.

During the 1950's and 1960's a program of geologic mapping of counties has been underway in Nevada by geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Nevada Bureau of Mines. The aping has been done principally at reconnaissance scales, with more detailed work in local areas. Geologic maps are either published or open-filed for about a dozen counties at scales of 1:200,000 or 1:250,000. One by-product of the geologic mapping has been the recognition of about 80 Tertiary volcanic centers from which large or very large volumes of volcanic material ranging from rhyolitic to andesitic in composition have been erupted. For purposes of this discussion these are regarded as the major centers; the tally does not include hundreds and perhaps thousands of small rhyolitic domes and plugs and basaltic vents. About 15 to 20 of the 80 major centers are believed to be calderas ranging in diameter from 3 to 25 miles. Some have been described in the literature by geologists of the Nevada Test Site and others. However, the vast majority of the 80 centers have not been described in print, and we are indebted to our colleagues for locating them for us in many of the counties. PT Kaltim Prima Coal?s 13-km (8-mile) overland conveyor (OLC) was commissioned in 1991. It is a conventional three-roller, 35 degree trough belt type. Cost and performance optimization during initial design resulted in a 5.4-m/sec (17.7-ft/sec) belt speed, 1,000 mm- (40 in.-) belt width to convey 1.35 kt/h (1,490 stph) and 7 Mt/a (7.7 million stpy) of coal. Despite a high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 m/sec (21 ft/sec) in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput in-crease. In 2002, a new low loss ST2100 1,100 mm- (43 in.-) wide belt replaced the ST2250 that was due to be changed-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to increase the OLC capacity to 30 Mt/a (33 million stpy). Upgrading the OLC by increasing the belt speed was the lowest capital option. Increasing belt width and/or modifying the trough angle to have larger cross sectional area was not an economical option because it would require expensive changes and significant down time of the OLC. To achieve 30 Mt/a (33 million stpy), the belt speed had to be increased to 8.5 m/sec (28 ft/sec). Although such high belt speed looked feasible, there was no information at that time of other OLC operating at such high speed. There was a risk that the conveyor would not operate safely and reliably at higher speeds. This risk was escalated by the fact there was no facility to lower or fine-tune the belt speed once the higher belt speed was implemented.

The underground mining evolution for block cave mines in Chile and worldwide has made important strides in the last decades. Nonetheless, reserves determination in the initial stages of these types of projects—mainly for long-term planning—is not studied in as much detail as it should be, especially regarding the impact on the final value of the enterprise. Today, the first estimation of the size of a block cave mine, typically expressed in tons, tends to determine very large footprints and ore bodies. The resulting large-scale mine is obtained by applying the marginal cut-off grade (COG) to determine reserves. Yet, in many cases, it is possible to obtain an equal or higher benefit, extracting fewer reserves in less time, with a smaller active area, which significantly reduces the project’s uncertainty. To explore scenarios obtained by applying a higher marginal COG in the initial phases of the project, the Hill of Value methodology is used to estimate the net present value (NPV) in relation to the production rate and the COG. However, the application of this methodology considers certain simplifications that generate results which are not completely satisfactory in specific cases. This paper suggests an improvement of this method to obtain more reliable results regarding determination of a COG profile that will optimize the NPVof a block-cave project. The methodology was developed and applied in a massive polymetallic deposit with zinc, lead, and silver mineralization, corresponding to a real block caving project. The methodology provides NPV results that differ by approximately 15% in comparison to the real mine plan, while also being considerably simpler and faster to calculate. In summary, the proposed methodology provides a reasonable and fast procedure to estimate higher than marginal COG that increases the NPV of block cave mine projects.
