In uranium mines, the median size of the aerosol has been found to be about 0.1 micron or less. Such small aerosols are readily deposited or "plated-out" on dosimeter interior surfaces resulting in the recording of a low dose. The "plate-out" properties of the CEA alpha dosimeter head are described with respect to aerosol properties in controlled experiments in the laboratory. A simple model is derived to estimate the amount of "plate-out" in the CEA head.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the integrity of escapeways in a three entry underground coal mine. A center conveyor belt entry (secondary escapeway), was flanked by an intake (primary escapeway) and a return entry. Diesel equipment was used throughout the mine for material and personnel haulage. A carbon monoxide monitoring system, tied to a data recording computer on the surface, was deployed throughout the belt entry and at selected sites in the intake and return entries. Previously, the company had a fire of unknown origin in another mine, which prompted an interest in the performance of their escapeways. An initial, qua1itative evaluation was performed by burning approximately 14 kg of coal at the mouth of the intake entry. The first test was followed by a similar burn at the mouth of the belt entry. These initial trials showed a high quantity of leakage between entries. In several follow-up evaluations, simulated fires, using a tracer gas, were set in the intake and belt entries. Tracer gas concentrations were obtained in all entries at four different underground locations. The results of these tests showed that permanent stoppings could not guarantee isolated, contaminant-free escapeways.

Two hundred and thirty million tons of coal! That is what the Burlington Northern (BN) railroad anticipates that it and the Chicago North Western railroad (CNW) will haul out of the southern Powder River Basin l (see map on page 966) in 1994. Put that 209 Mt (230 million st) into railroad perspective. Current average train size is 113 cars. With each car transporting 94 t (103.5 st) of coal, each train averages 10.6 kt (11,700 st) of coal. Simple division shows that 209 Mt (230 million st) of coal equals 19,658 trains a year. So BN and the CNW must move 54 loads a day out of the Basin. Every load, of course, has an empty side of its cycle. This means that 54 loads a day translates into 108 total trains a day, or 39,420 trains a year through the southern PRB.

Successful transitions from micro- to macro-engineering are the keys to effective technology transfer between research and development organizations and industrial end users. At the same time, it has proven to be one of the most difficult tasks that the minerals industry has had to manage. Typically, developers of fundamental information concerning how mineral processing subsystems work have been academics and government scientists. These are the individuals giving the most important input to micro-engineering models that can benefit industrial operations. Publication is the usual route for "attempting" to transfer this technology to the end users. Unfortunately, with such publications, very little direct communication occurs concerning real industry needs or the future steps required to make the particular micro-engineering model useful. In the past, the industry has relied on in-house R&D groups and plant metallurgists to "translate" publications, to provide useful macro-engineering tools for plant applications. To some extent, engineering companies have also been asked to serve this function. However, these firms have been rather ineffective in this area since their conservative nature has caused them to look rather suspiciously at new technology. This approach to technology transfer has worked, albeit clumsily, for the last several decades. This communication system is now on the verge of total collapse due to conditions of the minerals industry. Mining companies can no longer afford the significant overhead expenses of specialized technical staffs. Universities are finding it extremely difficult to interest US students in mineral engineering programs, and funding for such programs is weak. Faculty members involved in micro-engineering research today tend to focus on pure (non-application-oriented) research.

A multiyear program involving online, in-vessel exposures at Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI) has provided information and experience about the materials and designs for brickwork linings in pressure oxidation autoclaves. A variety of brick and mortar products was evaluated. Properties before and after exposure were used to document the performance. Some benefits include the development of a new silicate mortar, a better understanding of brick requirements and increased autoclave operating time between maintenance shutdowns. BGMI operates six pressure oxidation autoclaves at its Eureka County, NV gold operation. These autoclave process 15.8 k/ld (17,500 stpd) of gold ore. Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the six autoclave circuits. The gold ore is refractory, in which the gold particles are mineralogically encapsulated on a micro- and submicroscopic level. The autoclaves are 4.4- m- (14-ft-) diam and 26 m (85 ft) long (tip-to-tip). Inside of each is a full brickwork (brick plus mortar) lining that divides the vessel into five compartments. Each compartment has a motor-driven agitator that keeps the slurry suspended and disperses the oxygen to enhance reaction. During autoclave operation, the conditions are steady state at 210° to 232° C (410° to 450° F) and 61 to 62 kPa (420-430 psi). As shown in Fig. 1, there are other accessory vessels (splash and flash towers) in the autoclave circuits that are also brickwork-lined. The linings used to date, other than small test sections, have all been acid-resistant fireclay bricks, bonded with alkali silicate mortar, PbO- based mortar and/or vinyl ester mortar, but mainly alkali silicate mortar.

A quantitative estimation of the size distribution of rock fragments is extremely important in mining, metallurgy and other geotechnical fields. This paper presents a new approach to the analysis of fragmentation. The method combines the practicality of digital image processing of the rock surface with the theoretical volume calculations based on the principles and laws of fractal geometry. The final volumetric distribution curve is compared with the results from traditional sieving indicating close agreement.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the potential for in situ leach mining "(ISM) of gold and silver mineralization. This preliminary study examined samples from several types of deposits using light optical microscopy and the electron microprobe to characterize the ore and gangue minerals and their microscopic characteristics, including the spacial relations between the target minerals and likely natural fluid channelways. Low grade disseminated deposit types from the western U.S. were found to contain fracture-hosted or matrix-hosted gold and silver minerals, some of which are encapsulated by quartz or pyrite. Geologic features readily observed microscopically include ore and gangue mineral identity, size, and their association with each other and with fractures. Successful ISM application to gold and silver deposits needs this data to: (1) select the proper lixiviant based on chemical reactivity of the host rock, ore, and gangue minerals, (2) determine potential permeability characteristics when designing lixiviant flow patterns, and (3) understand potential problems of the lixiviant reaching encapsulated ore minerals. Careful examination of the geologic characteristics of each ore body is required because of the observed diversity of characteristics in deposits from the same "class" and even within the deposit itself.

The production of soda ash from trona (sodium sesquicarbonate, Na2CO3•NaHCO3•2H2O) resources has completely displaced the production of synthetic soda ash in the USA. Further, the utilization of other trona resources is under consideration in China, Turkey, etc. Recent research has been concerned with the development of flotation technology for the trona industry. In this regard studies on the flotation behavior of sodium carbonate salts: trona, sodium carbonate monohydrate and decahydrate, as well as the flotation behavior of sodium bicarbonate, are reported for both cationic (dodecyl ammonium hydrochloride) and anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate) collectors. It has been found that strong flotation of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) can be achieved with 100% recovery, while the other sodium carbonate salts do not float well. These results have been explained by FTIR analysis of aqueous solutions of Na2CO3and NaHCO3in a range of concentrations from very dilute to saturated conditions. The changes in the shape of the O-H stretching band of water are correlated with the flotation behavior of Na2CO3salts and NaHCO3. In addition, the absorption band of the carbonate ion at ca. 1385 cm-1is used to monitor its interactions with water and/or other ions in solution. The infrared results demonstrate thatNa2CO3acts as a water structure maker, leading to an extensively hydrated surface that accounts for the poor flotation of most sodium carbonate salts. In contrast, NaHCO3does not have this characteristic and consequently complete flotation is possible with both cationic and anionic collectors. These results support the previous water structure analysis for soluble salt flotation of alkali halides and other oxyanion salts.

P.L. 95-87 contains explicit demands for land-use planning in its reclamation and designation sections. Both sections require recognition of local land-use plans; however, the sections are not well integrated. Accommodations to these planning requirements may be found in suggestions based on British mineral planning practice. Better links can be created among local land-use planners, the state's permitting authority and designation office, and mine designers. Mining companies should take more interest in local land-use plans and in resource inventories; states should consider devolving to local government responsibility for accepting mine permit applications and designation of unsuitability petitions.

Impacts of mining on surface water and groundwater occur frequently not only in active mines but in abandoned mines, then the establishment of effective legal mechanisms for the regulation and control of mine waters is a necessary step in order to avoid pollution from mine waters and in consequence to contribute for a sustainable development of the mining industry. Currently there is a lack of a specific European legislation about mine waters and this absence of legislation occurs too at national level in many European countries. This absence of an European specific regulatory framework for mine water pollution questions the effectiveness and the applicability of the current legislation and this fact has led the EC to put forward proposals legislation to adequately deal with environmental and social consequences of mining, and among those proposals is a draft for a directive on waste from the extractive industry that includes provisions for mine water pollution.

Horizontal stress is an important factor that contributes to roof failure during longwall entry development, especially when the immediate roof is weak. In this paper, the effects of stress angle between the maximum horizontal stress and entry development and stress ratio of the maximum to minimum horizontal stresses on the stress distributions in the weak immediate roof of a three-entry system are analyzed using the finite element method. The results have confirmed that stress angle has a significant influence on the stress distributions. Generally, the three-entry system is in the worst stress condition when the stress angle is about 60° to 75° . The stress ratio has also some effects on the roof stresses.

INTRODUCTION The need for discussion of Owner-Engineer-Contractor relationships in tunneling arises from the increase in costly and time-consuming litigation. The paper examines the objectives, motivations and responsibilities of each party, discusses some common causes of claims in underground work, and makes some suggestions for improvements. The viewpoint and bias are those of an engineer. If a subtitle were required for the session, "Sharing the Risk" would be appropriate. Sharing the risk is an important aspect of Owner-Engineer-Contractor relationships because when a risk is shared, all parties have an incentive to minimize it. The System It would be shortsighted not to recognize that the system is wider than the Owner, the Engineer and the Contractor. Two rare evaporite minerals, nahcolite (NaHC03) and trona (Na2C03?NaHC03?2H20), are both widely used in the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) The largest natural carbonate deposits (trona) are in Wyoming, USA, the second largest deposits are in Turkey, in a lacustrine basin (Beypazari) where nahcolite and trona are located within the Miocene Hirka Formation. The Hirka Formation is mainly composed of bituminous shale, claystone, marlstone, tuffltuffite, and dolomitic limestones. Although numerous trona beds are interbedded within the above mentioned sedimentary units, there are only two beds of trona that are of economic interest. The lower part of the lower trona bed is rich in double carbonates such as pirrsonite (NA2C03? CaC03?2H20) and gaylussite (Na2C03?CaC03?5H20), indicating a change in Ca/Na ratio in the solutions which are responsible for the formation of soda occurrences. In contrast, the upper part of the upper trona bed is rich in nahcolite. This minerological pattern has been found in every drill- hole in the basin. While both trona beds average up to 10 m (33 ft) thick, the average thickness of nahcolite is approximately 0.5 m (1.6 ft). Also, thin section studies show that many fibrous and lath-like trona crystals contain small radial nahcolite crystals; all of them are euhedral and equi-dimensional. Geochemical studies of major, minor, and trace element contents also support this coexistence. Macroscopic and microscopic observations reveal that the nahcolites principally were formed as a result of an incongruent dissolution process of trona. In conclusion, the presence of nahcolite in the Beypazari basin is due to the dissolution process of trona, particularly during the last stage of evaporation, as a result of fresh water entering the basin. During that time, an increase in the HC03/ C03 ratio resulted in nahcolite-trona phase transitions.

The continuous need for infrastructure expansion forces the mining industry to develop underground structures into more sensitive and violent environments. When underground excavation enters into deep and high stress rock conditions, geotechnical designers find themselves faced with the difficult task of selecting a rock support system that will meet today's stringent requirements. Whatever support system is chosen, it is mandatory that potential rock movement be controlled. All this has intensified the development of safety systems and new, unique solutions which can enable construction companies to go both, further and deeper, without reducing the level of safety. To address these needs, Atlas Copco developed the Roofex® bolt, specifically designed to withstand large static and dynamic deformations under prespecified load conditions. The Roofex Rock Bolt acts as stiff support up to a designable load level before the sliding effect of the mechanical frictional system is triggered and allows highly controlled rock mass movement without loosing the support function.

Support characteristics of in-cycle trusses are analyzed using a photoelastic model loaded by tightening a truss in the sequence normally used in an underground mine. Stresses in the roof at its center point and at the junction of the roof and rib are examined. Effects of zero tension and unequal tension in the inclined anchor rods are presented. Effects of simulated subsidence on stress in the roof surface and on tension in the separate truss members are examined. Conclusions are drawn relating to (1) the effects of tension in the inclined anchor rods on uplift and compressive stress parallel to the roof surface, (2) the effects of subsidence on stress in the roof surface, and (3) the effects of subsidence on tension in the truss members.

The Norwegian contracting firm A/S Høyer-Ellefsen has for the last 2.5 years carried out substantial pregrouting in a 7600m long tunnel just outside the city of Oslo. This has been done to avoid groundwater lowering and consequent damage to surface structures. A WIRTH TBM is used in combination with a 2 boom Atlas Copco hydraulic jumbo for the drilling of groutholes in front of the machine. The detailed procedure for the drilling and grouting will be discussed, and the results obtained will be presented.

Chelatang agents, because of their metal specificity, can function as effective mineral processing reagents. A brief review of the work carried out in this area is presented. Some of the salient features of mineral flotation and flocculation with chehting-type reagents, such as bulk us. surface chelation, the role of pH, mineral solubility, solution chemistry of reagents, and temperature, are illustrated with appropriate examples. The problems associated with the commercialization of chelating reagents for ore beneficiation and the research efforts required in this area are also discussed.

Examining a typical curriculum for mineral process engineers shows that traditional subjects remain important, namely, engineering, earth and basic sciences, mathematics and mineral proc¬essing technology. However, Table I shows additional subjects that may be woven into a modern curriculum, because of micro- and macro-engineering advances over the years. The ways to incorporate these subjects into the curriculum will vary from school to school. Such changes are in response to evolutionary technological and political needs as determined by society and business. The mineral industry shares a particularity- heterogeneity-with the other primary industries exploiting nature such as agriculture, fisheries, and forestry, which may not be found in the secondary industries, In the mineral industry heterogeneity is evident both in the raw material, the ore in situ, and in the working conditions. Mining engineering, which encompasses the tools for designing mine production systems, is mostly an assembly of the other branches of engineering and applied science. The assemblage's goal is to arrive at an optimal production system. As such, mining engineering is similar to systems engineering. The technique for the development of systems-mine production systems or mining operations -is operations research with its succession of activities: observations, modeling, experimentation, and verification. Comparisons among alternative systems are highly desirable during the development phase of a mining operation as well as during later phases where modifications, ameliorations, and expansions are carried out on the existing system. The role of the independent consultant in systems design and development lies in the collection and breadth of experiences from modeling and model verification in other operations, which he can add to a new system's development and thus in- crease its credibility with management.

The fishhook effect, wherein the recovery of fine particles in the underflow increases with decreasing particle size, has been observed in hydrocyclone classification. A systematic study was carried out to determine the factors affecting the recovery of very fine particles to the underflow. Attempts were made to identify factors, i.e., design and operating variables, that affect the size at which this phenomenon occurs. Experimental results show that the sizes at which the fishhook effect occurs is mainly a function of feed size distribution and solids concentration and is less dependent on the design variables.
