The design of a preparation plant for minimum maintenance and clean up requires both the skills of the Engineer and the practical experience of the Operator. From the initial flow sheet and preliminary design until the plant is completed and operating, each phase of the work must be thoroughly explored for simplicity, workability and high efficiency. It is the responsibility of the Designing Engineer to develop the plant around the basic flow sheet, selecting equipment and materials not only with regards to Initial cost but also required upkeep and repair.

Coal, which was discovered in Utah in 1849, covers about 18% of the total area. Production in 1981 vas more than 14 million tons. However, some Utah coal mines are quite gassy. If longwall face technology is applied, then a release of a high volume of methane may be expected during the mining process. Investigations on methane content have been made by use of an isothermic bubble desorbometer. The desorbable methane content of 5 m3 to 16 m3 of methane per ton of coal mined has been determined.

The titanium industry is based on the unique properties of titanium dioxide and titanium metal. Because of its whiteness, high refractive index and resulting light scattering ability, titanium dioxide in its two main allotropic forms, rutile and anatase, is the predominant white pigment for paints, paper, plastics, rubber, and various other materials. Titanium metal, because of its high strength/weight ratio and resistance to corrosion, is widely used for aircraft, both in airframes and engines, for powerplant surface condensers, and a wide variety of chemical processing and handling equipment. U.S. production of titanium dioxide pigment in 1979 was about 658,000 tons - 2/, valued at about $770 million. Net shipments of titanium mill products were around 19,000 tons, worth about $380 million. These two major uses account for over 96% of domestic titanium consumption. The third largest application, the use of rutile for coating welding rods, required about 9,500 tons of rutile concentrate, worth about $4 million. Other applications of titanium-bearing raw materials include the manufacture of titanium carbides, ceramics, and chemicals, and the recently developed use of ilmenite as a substitute for barite in well-drilling muds.

Hydrogeological techniques were used to solve problems of slope stability in open-pit mines of the Eufaula bauxite district, Alabama. Geologic and hydrologic data were evaluated and used to design a system of dewatering wells to enable the operators to mine bauxite more efficiently and economically. Walls of open-pit mines in the district were subsequently stabilized by the operation of the dewatering system. Three open-pit mines, each at varying stages of the mining process, of the A. P. Green Refractories Company, were used to develop a sequential series of guidelines that indicate how to effectively remove ground water from the formations surrounding the ore bodies in the district. The use of sound engineering principles in well design, in combination with the correct interpretation of the pit hydrology provided the basis for solutions of the slope- stabilization problem aided in the economical removal of bauxite from mines of the district.

Corrosion of steel roof support systems can cause potential premature failure of the support, thus adversely affecting the excavation stability and rock-related safety. An in-house corrosion test system was designed and developed to test full-length roof bolts for material performance based on tensile load capacity and strength under different corrosive conditions found underground. Initially, ASTM A615 grade 60 steel roof bolts, which are the most commonly used bolt material in the United States, were tested with and without stresses in a simulated underground coal-mining environment for approximately six months. This paper mainly discusses the test system, protocol and system shortcomings, and makes recommendations based on the observations and results.

Phosphate mining and beneficiation in the State of Florida are presently being carried on by 12 different mining companies with a total of 21 mining and flotation plant locations. Their combined production of both washer rock and flotation concentrate was approximately 28,000,000 long tons in 1968. This accounted for 70-72% of the total U. S. production and close to 30% of the world's output of this mineral. From this extensive activity in the Florida phosphate field, one basic flow sheet for beneficiation of the ore has developed over the years as the most commonly employed. In fact, all of these plants with the exception of two beneficiate Florida pebble phosphate using a basic operation as illustrated in Figure I. The two plants which differ from this general approach are not using raw matrix as feed. In one instance, +14 mesh pebble is ground in a rod mill to release free silica which is subsequently removed in a cationic froth flotation circuit using an amine acetate blend and kerosene. This technique generally results in a 4-7 BPL unit upgrading of the feed pebble. The other exception to the standard flow sheet illustrated in Figure I is an operation which is beneficiating tailing piles. In this case, the material is first subjected to cationic froth flotation in order to upgrade the feed to a point comparable to normal matrix. Thereafter, after, the phosphate is floated in an anionic rougher circuit followed by cationic flotation of the silica in a cleaner circuit.

Despite limited discussion, Chemistry of Flotation is a good text and reference 1985 by M. C. Fuerstenau, J. D. Miller, and M. C. Kuhn Society of Mining Engineers Caller No. D Littleton, CO 80127 Softcover, $23.50 (member), $18.50 (student member), $28.50 (list) Review by Richard R. Klimpel Chemistry in Flotation, as stated by the authors, is intended as a textbook for students as well as a reference book for practicing flotation engineers. It covers subject matter related to surface phenomena; collectors and collector salts; natural floatability; the flotation of sulfide minerals, insoluble oxide and silicate minerals, semisoluble salts, and soluble salts; and slime coatings. There are no discussions in the book on practical plant implications of flotation chemistry, such as the influence of rate, particle size effects, dosage, flotation equipment, and methods of chemical addition. The book itself is small (only 177 pages), and, as published, is in an easy-to-handle soft cover. Once one accepts the intent of the authors, this book really does represent a very concise and convenient summary of the chemistry of flotation. It is, however, far from complete in its discussion of concepts and implications of data. Very often in the presentation, key prior knowledge (or at least subject matter awareness) not given in the book, is assumed. Thus, depending on one's familiarity with the specific subject matter, some sections can be easily followed while others could be tough going. Some of the discussion is so brief and terse on important subjects that unless the reader already realizes the meaning of the presentation, the conclusions to be drawn are not always clear. Therefore, if one is not expecting a self-contained primer on flotation chemistry, this book is very useful. To this end, the book is recommended to practitioners of flotation chemistry. The presentation of data in figures and tables is good. It helps considerably in the book achieving its conciseness. The authors certainly are qualified and knowledgeable in the subject matter - apparent in the style of presentation. In summary, this reviewer thoroughly enjoyed this book and will use it as a concise review of flotation chemistry. Richard R. Investigators there reported the latest discoveries, developments in commercial practice, and state-of-the-art reviews of scientific principles and applications of various technologies for handling, processing, and use of high sulfur coals. The Economics of Magnesium Metal, 1985, Roskill Information Services Ltd., 2 Clapham Road, London SW9 OJA England, 129 pp., 71 tables, appendices, bound, $750-Despite setbacks in some major magnesium markets in 1985, Roskill's latest forecast for the last half of this decade is for a 4% to 6% annual growth rate in demand. Growth for magnesium metal is expected in the motor industry for use as a possible substitute for aluminum. Some magnesium producers are altering their marketing strategies to cultivate this market. This study also includes a review of the worldwide magnesium industry, its end uses and consumption, and international trade and price trends.

Coal is found in every major geographic region throughout Alaska and in two offshore areas. Since about 1852 over 100 small mines have opened and closed. Last years production was almost entirely from one mine in central Alaska. Clearly the utilization of Alaska's abundant coal resources presents political, economic and technical problems that are far from solution. Location and Physical Features Figure one illustrates the geographical and geological similarity between Alaska and western United States. The Arctic region of Alaska generally resembles Wyoming and the Dakotas. The Brooks Range is an extension of the Rocky Mountains. The Central region of Alaska between the Brooks Range and the Alaska Range bears a general resemblance to the basin and range country of western United States. The Southcentral and Southeastern regions has a similar resemblance to the Sierra Nevadas and the west coast of the United States.

Preliminary figures from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration show 801 underground metal mines and 490 surface metal mines, at the end of 1981, up from 663 and 383, respectively, in 1980. Preliminary MASH figures also show 207 underground nonmetal mines and 1070 surface nonmetal mines at the end of 1981, compared with 167 and 1092, respectively, last year. In addition, preliminary MASH figures show there were 14,676 mineral extraction operations on the surface and 3845 underground at the end of 1981, versus 14,951 and 3675, respectively, for last year. The number of mines, then, in three of four categories increased significantly, while having a lower net total of just 2% in the other category. And the number of underground extraction operations increased nearly 5% for the year, while surface operations were down less than 2%. But despite operations totals that mostly held their own or showed significant increases, it was a tough year for the nation's mining industry. The nonferrous segment of the industry had a bad year and 1982 may be no better, according to Business Week (Jan. 11, 1982), which adds that a turnaround is impossible unless the general economy recovers. Even then, with diminishing markets and overcapacity plaguing its products, the mining industry's condition "will be far from robust," the magazine says. The basic problem is that nonferrous metals-aluminum, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc-are tied to the most troubled sectors of the US economy. As recently as 1979, for example, more than 40% of all aluminum shipments went to the construction and transportation industries. Last year, these markets were down to 35% of aluminum shipments. And molybdenum sales to steel producers dropped by nearly 15% last year. Moreover, nonferrous products ended 1981 at disastrously low prices. Molybdenum oxide sold at $8.77/kg ($3.98/lb), half its $17.63/kg ($8/lb) price earlier in 1981 and aluminum was listed at $1.08/kg ($0.49/lb), compared with $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) a year earlier. The Comex price of copper was $1.54/ kg ($0.70/lb), down from $3.11/kg ($1.41/lb) in early 1980, in real terms the worst copper price in 30 years. Lower prices led operators to cut their output and increase layoffs, shut down mines, and defer capital spending projects. In December, Duval Corp., a Pennzoil Co. subsidiary, shut all four of its US copper mines until March. Aluminum Co. of America had laid off 7.3% of its work force, shut nine of its 38 smelting lines, and entered 1982 operating at only 68% of capacity. Inco Ltd., the Free World's largest nickel producer, lost money in 1981, an estimated $11 million, for the first time since 1932. And, like Falconbridge Nickel Mines and other major nickel producers, had cut back on nickel production and was operating at only 63% of capacity (Forbes, Feb. 15, 1982). Amax, the country's largest molybdenum producer, had cut production by 20%. And Hanna Mining Co. sold lead for $5.07/kg ($2.30/lb), about $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) below what it cost to produce. Another problem is that copper companies in the next few years must come to terms with problems of aging smelters. Some companies are simply closing them. In 1980, Anaconda closed its 75-year-old Butte, MT, smelter and is shipping concentrates to Japan, rather than modifying the smelter to meet environmental requirements. And oth Phelps Dodge Corp. and Asarco Inc. have antiquated smelters on which they will have to make decisions. The most troubled metal in 1982, Business Week said, will be molybdenum, with no real recovery in sight until the mid-1980s. High molybdenum prices in the late 1970s, caused in part by shortages, triggered overexpansion that will take years for the US market to soak up. On a more upbeat note, 1981 mergers might help stabilize the industry by providing funds for mining companies. Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) said it plans to spend $7 billion on Kennecott during the next 10 years for modernization and expansion. And Atlantic Richfield Co. said it will spend $500 million on Anaconda Copper Co. during the next five years. Another positive note was sounded by T. H. Adams of the United Banks of Colorado Inc. He said he expects the mining industry to experience moderate growth in 1982, led by "interest rate sensitive" demand from energy, electronics, and defense markets. And mining will be helped by "weak, but improved" construction and auto markets. The mining industry will be operating in an economy stronger than 1981, but still relatively sluggish by postwar standards, Adams predicted. Iron Ore Estimated US iron ore production in 1981 was 75.2 Mt (74 million long tons), up 6% from 70.7 Mt (69.6 million long tons) in 1980, though down from the 87.1 Mt (85.7 million long tons) produced in 1979. The mine value of usable iron produced from domestic mines was estimated at $3 billion. US iron ore was produced by 28 companies operating 35 mines, 26 concentration plants, and 16 pelletizing plants. The mines included 34 open pits and one underground mine. So, while developing its Two Piece Assembly, Goodyear noted a number of trends in the mining industry: •The global market sophistication of equipment and operations requires the packaging of products and services to provide the best return on investment. •Industry consolidation and growth have resulted in fewer, more powerful mining houses, leveraging purchasing power in the marketplace. •User productivity demands continue to drive original equipment manufacturers to develop higher pay-load equipment. •Technology needs include improved ergonomics, to reduce fatigue and increase operator productivity. •Increased laws and environmental regulation prohibit on-site whole tire disposal practices.

Large-diameter autogenous and semiautogenous grinding mills represent the primary thrust of the expanding grinding technology. In spite of initial difficulties, large autogenous and semiautogenous mills have reached an acceptable level of technology that provides the mineral engineer with a reliable, low cost means of ore comminution. A successful milling installation begins during the design stage of the grinding mill and the plant in which it is to be installed. This is particularly true in autogenous and semiautogenous mills. Critical mill and plant design factors should be considered while the mill and installation are still only "paper." Various current liner designs will be discussed ranging from lifter bar/plate to integral types. Modes of operation such as "high-low" will be considered. Liner maintenance procedures ranging from laydown area in plant design, proper mill shutdown methods, to installation and bolt tightening complete the equation to yield optimum performance possible for any particular grinding application. The objective of this paper is to discuss trends in wear materials, designs, and operating practices, and to provide some guidelines for good practice as we move through the 1980s. We will put together concepts that relate to the designs, materials, and applications so that higher performance can be obtained by the operator for his specific application. The concepts are shown as being in series became they are dependent on each other to achieve the desired performance: designs times materials times application results in higher performance (Arnson, Parks, and Kjos, 1983).

In recent years, equipment manufacturers have been busy developing remote control systems to catch up with the sophistication and efficiency of continuous miners. Now the tables are turned, and manufacturers are undertaking the new challenge of upgrading, refining and equipping continuous miners to take full advantage of the capabilities made possible by modern, successful remote control systems. Because the operator can safely advance the miner farther without pulling out for roof bolting, continuous miners now need to be equipped with means of complying with correct face ventilation, dust suppression, methane detection, diffusion and improved lighting. Some of the exciting possibilities being developed to catch up with remote control include feedback controls using laser beams as datum points, coal sensing devices with feedback signals to show the operator what the machine is doing, show where it is relative to the coal seam, how hard it is working, and more sophisticated use of cyclic control. Mining machinery manufacturers have accepted the new challenges, and faster, safer mining procedures are already in sight.

Goldex Mine is an underground mine located near the town of Val-d?Or. Multiple innovations were required to work the mine. Due to its low grade, it was important to develop a bulk mining method to economically extract the ore. The method used is a combination between shrinkage stope and long hole stope methods. This modified method is more than adequate; however, all of the ore body must be liberated in a very short period of time. Therefore, to bring down 23 Mt of ore, large blasts up to 1.8 Mt are required. The situation is also complicated by the fact that the mine is located in a residential area. No less that 40 homes are built within a 1 km radius of the mine site. In addition to managing mass blasts, means must also be found to mitigate the vibrations produced by the blast to diminish the disturbance to the neighbourhood. Therefore, the mine used numerous tools to properly plan the blasts and reduce the impacts. A program to control vibrations was one of the first tools put in place. The program?s aim was to draw up an action plan to ensure a follow-up of the homes by inspecting them. The second tool was to develop a methodology to plot a reliable attenuation curve and to adequately determine the maximum charge weight for each blast. Finally, effective communication tools were developed to inform the neighbourhood. There was a huge amount of work to be done in relation to the bench. Reliable and fast loading techniques had to be found to load large blasts in a very short period of time. Adequate logistics had to be developed to send underground more than 20,000 kg of emulsion per day while performing the daily underground operations. Technology had to be developed to adapt the i-kon electronic blasting system to large blasts. Since the control of the charges was the major factor to reduce surface vibrations, it was important to employ loading techniques that would permit decking of the long holes to reduce the charge weight per delays without adversely affecting the loading. All of this work requires an enormous amount of energy but also close collaboration between the different stakeholders (various departments, suppliers and consultants).

In open pit mine planning and design, push back mine sequencing is widely used for long-term production planning. In push back design, a series of nested pits is generated and then considered as possible push backs with regard to the minimum push back width requirements. These nested pits are produced by parameterizing on one economic parameters like commodity price, mining or processing cost, stripping ratio etc. The most important characterization of these push backs is that the inner most push back has the highest value per ton, the second inner most push back has the second highest value per ton and so on. These nested pits are generated based on the best estimates of grade within a representation of the ore body in a three dimensional matrix form. Therefore, the inherent uncertainty associated with reserve estimation (for our discussion grade uncertainty) is not taken into account when push backs are designed. These methods do not attempt to establish which part of the deposit is likely to be worth most. This paper introduced a new algorithm that incorporates ore grade uncertainty during push back design process. The suggested strategy tries to seek to schedule risky blocks later in the extraction sequence.

The effect of intensive milling on the conversion of microcline ( KAlSi3O8) to potassium chloride (KCl) occurred during the chlorination roasting process for artificial KCl production was investigated. A feldspar ore with 10.89% K2O grade and containing microcline was dry milled by a planetary ball mill for mechanical activation. Milled ore mixed with calcium chloride was roasted at temperatures between 500 and 1000 °C to get the chlorination roasting process. The product was then leached in water to dissolve KCl occurring during the roasting, which will be precipitated from the pregnant leach solution by evaporation. Results showed that potassium recovery from the unmilled ore increased rapidly up to 800 °C, and dramatically decreased at higher temperatures due to the removal of KCl from the furnace by means of evaporation. A potassium recovery of 31.95% was achieved by the unmilled ore, whereas it was 88.43% when 15 min milled ore was roasted at 750 °C. It was concluded that intensive milling caused mechanical activation of microcline to reduce the roasting temperature of the chlorination roasting process.

Edmonton South LRT is the latest expansion of the Subway system in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada: Consisting of twin 5.8m segmental lined tunnels, 280m long, driven by a Lovat EPB machine. The key challenges were as follows. A 6% downhill grade. Tight radius curves of 250m.Overlying structures within 3m of the tunnel. Strata consisting of sand above the water table, glacial tills and bed rock below the water table. Located within The University of Alberta Campus and adjacent to a hospital. Northern Alberta climate with winter temperatures routinely falling below—minus 30 degrees Celsius. This paper provides a case history and outlines the challenges involved in completing this project.

Peng The highlights of this paper are : • The shield supports with lemniscate links will exert a tangential force on the roof strata, causing unnecessary and harmful roof movements, thus damaging the roof structure. The principal source of the tangential force is the horizontal movement of the point O, the pivotal joint between the canopy and the caving shield. When the support height is changed during setting, the point O will move along a curve upward and rearward toward the gob. As a result, it produces a vertical movement, causing the roof to move up a distance of ?d, and a horizontal movement toward the gob, creating vertical fractures in the roof. • The major purpose for employing the lemniscate-link system is to protect the hydraulic legs against the action of the bending moments induced by the tangential force that causes deformation or destruction of the legs. • Based on these two points, the author suggested that, in order to eliminate the harmful effects of the lemniscate-link system and strengthen its advantageous features, a shield support with a new design of that mechanism has been developed. With the new design, the conventional rigid lemniscate links are replaced by hydraulic rams. When the pressure inside the rams reaches a certain level, the ram will yield.

During the last decade there were pronounced changes in the competitive pattern of the fossill fuels It is proposed to trace these trends and describe inter-fuel competition, first as it relates to the economy as a whole and then more specifically to examine competition of the fossil fuels as these share the electric utility market. Table 1, Competitive Fuels and Water Power Used in the United States, 1950-1959, shows the growth in the consumption of coal, oil, gas and water power 'during the past decade. Uses which are not directly competitive among the fuels, such as tractor fuel, carbon black, and consumption of petroleum products in the making of synthetic rubber, have been excluded from these statistics. The experience of the three fossil fuels in competition since 1950 shows natural gas expanding more rapidly, than oil by roughly twice as much, 219.0 percent' compared to 124.1 percent growth in B.t.u.s of oil consumed in the ten-year period. Percentagewise, water power little more than held its own, and coal, including anthracite, actually decreased more than one-fifth.

In order to more effectively pursue research on heap, dump, and in situ solution mining of gold and silver, the Federal Bureau of Mines conducted an extensive survey of leaching practices and problems. This presentation summarizes trends and statistics. Leaching is projected to provide 20 pct of primary mine produced gold and 10 pct of primary silver by the end of 1982. Current leaching practices in the United States are reviewed; operational problems and research programs to alleviate those problems are discussed.
