INTRODUCTION Only in recent years have the environmental hazards associated with mining and tunneling operations been fully acknowledged and determined remedial action undertaken. The nature of these excavation operations leads to a wide diversity of hazards spanning mechanical, electrical, chemical, environmental, and physiological. The most insidious of these are unquestionably the environmental ones which have the greatest long-term effect and are the most difficult to pinpoint and monitor. It is the atmospheric contaminants that lead to a significantly greater illness and mortality rate among miners. Dust is the most prevalent, hence most important of the atmospheric contaminants. Respirable particles lead to diseases characteristic of many mining operations: coal workers pneumoconiosis, asbestiosis, silicosis, talcosis, anthrocosis, etc. But toxic and suffocating gases can be equally insidious and the most innocuous pollutant, methane, leads to the most imminently disastrous results of all - explosion and fire. This means that truly effective monitoring of the environmental hazards in tunneling cannot be limited to a few simple standard check measurements. It must include the most precise measurements we can make for specific, documented hazards and even for factors, such as noise and heat stress, not immediately obvious as hazards. The Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act and more recent Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards are clearly designed to match such effective monitoring. The gold-silver deposits of the northern Primorye region are located in the eastern part of the East Sikhote-Alin volcanic belt, where the belt overlaps the Kema island-arc terrain of the Aptian-Albian age. There have been four deposits and numerous mineralization points found in the NE-trending Kema metallogenic belt that is about 1000 km long and 100 km wide. The known mineralization is of epithermal type, controlled by faults, and concentrated in quartz, quartz-fluorite-adularia, and, less commonly, sulfide-quartz vein systems hosted by the Upper Cretaceous-Lower Tertiary volcanic rocks. The vein systems extend for hundreds meters along strike, varying from tens centimeters to 50-60 meters in width. They are surrounded by wide zones of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration containing some gold-silver mineralization for which the commercial value was not studied during the early exploration. The ore bodies contain from 1 to 50-80 ppm of Au and from 1 to 1000 ppm of Ag. Gold is native, associated with quartz, and represented by particles from tens of microns to 1 mm in size. Silver occurs in native form as a constituent of argentite, pyrargyrite, stephanite, and other sulfosalts. The test work carried out for three vein systems 20 years ago showed that gold might be easily and almost completely recovered from the ore by cyanide treatment. The paper describes the geology and mineralogy of the deposits, Salut and Primorskoye, that are the most studied properties of the Kema belt. It also presents the data available on disseminated gold-silver mineralization in stockworks, altered explosive breccias, and wide zones of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration. This mineralization should be explored for possible exploitation as large open-pit, heap-leach deposits.

Flotation of fine and coarse coal after multistage addition of the frother was found to yield coal fractions with significantly lower ash content as compared to the feed. It was observed that the lowest ash content, specific gravity and reactivity of coal was associated with finer size fractions. Ignition and combustion characteristics of different coal fractions were evaluated using a differential thermal analyzer (DTA) with calorimeter attachment. It is suggested that in the ignition stage, the removal of mineral matter affects the reactivity through the physical changes brought about by the ash removal. In the char combustion stage the mineral matter seems to influence the reactivity through the catalytic activity of surface concentrations of metal ions, ratio of combustible/incombustible material, internal pore structure and roughness.

An efficient state-of-the-art dynamic model to simulate and predict the rate of water production in longwall coal mining operations was developed as a tool for mine planning purposes. The model can also provide an estimate of any potential resultant hydrogeological impacts of an operation via an array of element-specific single-valued parameters referred to as the field rating indices. The computational procedure was designed to fully exploit the benefits of hydrogeotechnology and utilize a combination of conceptual, physical, empirical, and numerical approaches to define, characterize, analyze, and evaluate flow con- trolling properties of fractured rock systems. The model presented here provides a dynamic prediction method for highly fractured flow; a practical tool in mine and water control planning; and a cost-effective means of assessing, based on the best available technology, the impacts of mining on the water resources within a mining environment to satisfy local and federal regulatory requirements. Unique features include consideration of laminar and non-darcian flow domains in double-porosity-pressure hydrogeological media.

In the dimension stone industry, workers in processing shops may be exposed to harmful levels of respirable silica dust when conducting the different tasks in stone preparation, which include cutting, grinding, polishing, and thermaling. To protect workers from this health hazard, operators sometimes ventilate processing shops using fan-powered dust collectors to capture and filter dust. To investigate this issue, NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, in cooperation with a dimension stone operation, upgraded an off-the-shelf dust collector the operator was utilizing in a polishing/cutting shop. Initial dust surveys showed that the unit was under-designed for the amount of dust being generated in the shop. The objective of the research was to cost-effectively increase the air cleaning volume and improve dust capture efficiency of the unit with a larger motor and blower. The unit?s original stock 0.56 kw motor and blower was replaced with a 2.24 kw motor and matching blower to increase airflow. The unit was evaluated both in the laboratory and the shop before and after the retrofit to determine the improvement of the upgrade. The study showed that the 2.24 kw upgrade improved the performance over the original 0.56 kw motor resulting in more dust being cleaned from the ambient air in the shop. The 2.24 kw unit cleaned 19% more air and captured 32% more respirable dust than the 0.56 kw unit.

Although primarily cut-and-cover excavations are required for replacement of the existing elevated I-93 interstate highway through the heart of Boston for the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) project, some mined tunnel construction was also undertaken. The mined tunneling conducted was the 22-m-wide northbound roadway structure which passed below a 20-m-deep operating underground subway station that was built in 1913. The innovative underpinning scheme used to support the subway station during construction resulted in the successful mining beneath the subway station with negligible vertical settlement. Two grouting galleries were carefully mined below the subway structure, and pre-grouting of the granulary, pervious glacial soils and weathered bedrock was carried out from these galleries. The reinforced concrete walls of the underpinning structure were constructed within three stacked drifts that were sequentially mined below each grouting gallery. After 11 cross adits were mined between the grouting galleries, cast-in-place post-tensioned girders that spanned between the stacked-drift walls were constructed to support the subway station. The stacked-drift walls also provided lateral support for the 22-m wide by 29-m long by13-m high opening beneath the girders.

This paper presents real time photoacoustic measurements of diesel-soot black-carbon (BC or EC) and Dusttrak nephelometer total carbon (TC) concentrations in a Nevada gold mine. Comparisons with time-integrated filter-based measurements of EC and TC accomplished using the NIOSH 5040 method were found to be 50% smaller than the integrated real time measurements. This work was initiated primarily as a demonstration project for the usefulness of photoacoustic instruments in measuring BC in the mine environment. Real time black carbon measurements are very useful for determining miner exposure, for providing feedback in mine ventilation systems, and for quantifying machine specific emission rates to understand the operating conditions for specific machines that produce greatest black carbon concentrations. This paper reports real time measurements of DPM from a loaded and empty hauler as it is operated in a drift with a 12% grade. The photoacoustic instruments were demonstrated to be satisfactory for BC measurements in the mine environment.

On average, there are approximately 10 fatal haul truck accidents per year. The most common causes for haul truck accidents include mechanical problems, inadequate training and insufficient road/berm maintenance. Due to the frequency and magnitude of haul truck accidents, new training methods are being investigated. With the widespread availability of computers and new technology becoming more reasonably priced, the ability to incorporate computer-based training for miners is becoming more possible. It has been shown that computer-based training is just as effective in knowledge acquisition as traditional lectures, and computer-based training can lead to a significant increase in the retention of material (Williams and Zahed, 1996). Studies have also shown that more engaging training methods lead to more effective knowledge acquisition (Burke et al., 2006). A supplemental system for current and new miner training to address the common causes of fatal accidents was developed. The training system is a virtual preshift inspection of a haul truck, and it can train new haul truck operators to identify parts that look defective. The training will increase an operator?s ability to recognize problematic parts and correctly identify the corrective action needed. Increasing the quality of training by providing an engaging, simulated hands-on environment will lead to safer behaviors by trainees, which will ultimately lead to fewer accidents and fatalities.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines is developing a process to selectively extract manganese from oxide ores as part of its in situ leach mining research program. The Bureau is conducting site characterization studies of two manganiferous iron-formation deposits which include: drill core, regional stratigraphic relationships from the existing geologic database, ore body geometry, geologic structure, hydrologic conditions, proximity of ore minerals to the leach fluid paths, surface subsidence potential, and data collected from laboratory leaching experiments. This information is being used to evaluate the technical, environmental, and economic feasibility of in situ leach mining of manganese for these two deposits. This paper will focus on the stratigraphy, mineralogy, ore textures, fractures, permeability, and porosity as they relate to in situ leach mining.

Silver has been a much maligned metal in recent years. In the last three and a half years the price has fallen from around US$7.00 -$7.80 to as low as $3.50 this spring. It has consistently under-performed most other precious metals in the past few years, and has fallen to its lowest levels since the late 1940s in inflation-adjusted terms. Perhaps this is beginning to change. Since April, silver prices have outperformed gold and platinum. While this may continue in the years ahead, key questions remain regarding the pace and timing of any future silver price advances. I want to talk about the supply and demand factors that have led silver to its recent position. Also, I will outline a possible path for silver supply, demand, and prices for the next several years. Before I dive into my discussion of the silver market, allow me to explain who I am. One of the points we always make to clients early in a relationship is that, when you are listening to someone's opinions, you always must remember who it is you are listening to, and why he might be saying whatever it is he wants you to hear. So often, people take opinions from brokers, traders, or investment advisors as gospel truth, never stopping to ask themselves two key questions: Is there any reason to believe that this person knows what he is talking about, and, second, is he trying to sell me something, in telling me this.

The advantages of using vertical pulsed columns as replacements for conventional mixer/settlers in the uranium industry have been known for some time. The advantages of the columns offer include a reduction in real estate for the plant, elimination of diluent evaporation and crud formation. This paper presents the findings of laboratory tests of pulsed columns extracting copper from pregnant leach solutions and also discusses potential advantages of the pulse column in copper solvent extraction.

Capital resource budgeting is the way managers of publicly held companies fulfill their fiduciary responsibility to maximize the wealth of stockholders. Managers maximize shareholder wealth by allocating investment capital to the most productive of competing alternative projects. Managers do this in a manner that maximizes the net present value of the firm's future cash flow. The techniques of cash flow analysis are the primary tools available for selecting a corporate portfolio of projects that meets or exceeds the rate of return expected by shareholders. The reliability of cash flow analysis hinges on the ability of managers to forecast the future values of individual components of cash flow. The accuracy and reliabil¬ity of forecasting determine the soundness of capital investment decisions and, ultimately, determine the value of the firm.

Coal mine refuse handling traditionally has been the redheaded stepchild of the industry - a problem to be ignored as much as possible. During the past few years, however, mining companies have become more aware of the potential water pollution problem associated with refuse handling and storage. Planning for refuse disposal increasingly emphasizes protection of the environment as well as economics of refuse handling. Coal companies are responding to the environmental control needs by devising new systems and adapting well-known techniques to refuse handling systems. Monterey Coal Company has operated a non-polluting refuse disposal system at its No. 1 Mine for over two years. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design considerations given to the planning of that system and the operational experience gained during its construction

The Detroit salt mine is operated by the Detroit Salt Co. It is one of the oldest underground room-and-pillar mines in the United States still in production. Mining at the Detroit salt mine began in 1906 with the sinking of the No. 1 shaft. Mining continued through the years, becoming progressively more modern in its equipment and techniques, until it was closed in 1983. In 1997, after a period of care and maintenance, the newly formed Detroit Salt Co. decided to reopen the mine. Upon completion of an extensive rehabilitation program, salt production resumed in 1998. Production currently continues at a rate of 910kt/a (1 million stpy). To date, the Detroit salt mine has mined more than 45 Mt (50 million st).This mine is unique because it lies under a heavily urbanized area within metropolitan Detroit. The mine and its history make a good case study for the continuing coexistence between the mining industry and its environs.

The High Density Sludge Process was originally developed by Bethlehem Steel Corporation for use on acid mine drainage and diluted waste pickle liquor discharges requiring continuous chemical treatment systems. This work began in the early 1970s and was first put into practical use around 1973. To date there are approximately 15 operating systems which have been installed on mine drainage in the United States, and another 10 systems worldwide. Dense Sludge is an innovative and improved method for treating acidic metal bearing streams in a manner which minimizes the volumetric generation of sludge for disposal. The technology utilizes a sludge recycle process which forms particles that have a low affinity for water, unlike conventional metal hydroxide solids which contain tightly bound interstitial waters. Typical acid mine drainage streams contain high sulfate concentrations which combine with calcium ions in lime based treatment systems to form gypsum crystals. The physical form of this gypsum is radically altered when the Dense Sludge process is utilized compared to the form generated in conventional lime treatment systems. The characteristics of the metals particles are also changed in this process, as the metal hydroxides are converted to metal oxides. Slides No. 1 and No.2 show scanning electron micrographs of conventional and densified sludges illustrating these differences. The magnification used was 300X. The dense sludge particles settle faster, dewater more readily, are more easily pumped, and hold much less water than conventional precipitates. In some cases, because the metal content of the sludge is more concentrated, it can be economically recovered.

Over ten years ago, Modular began development and implementation of its DISPATCH System for haulage optimization in open pit mines and now has over two dozen systems in operation worldwide. The so-called 'top down' approach used in system design and implementation was deliberate. This foresight now allows addition of features which would otherwise prove infeasible - without complete system redesign. Until recently, truck and shovel operator input provided timing data needed for optimal allocation. Now, addition of a high-speed, general purpose token ring loop controller and infrared (IR) transponders to each piece of mining equipment automates these important functions. Here, we discuss new devices, systems, and subsystems comprising mining's future.

Flame cutting and welding is one of the major causes of fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines. On May 20, 2006, a flame cutting operation at the Darby Mine No. 1 led to an explosion that resulted in five fatalities. On January 22, 2003, another explosion caused by flame cutting at the McElroy Mine resulted in three fatalities and three serious injuries. On June 22, 1999, a flame cutting and welding operation at the Loveridge Mine caused a fire that resulted in sealing of the mine for an extended period. Finally, on March 19, 1992, an explosion at the Blacksville No. 1 Mine that was caused by welding resulted in four fatalities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study on fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines that were caused by flame cutting and welding operations to determine the root causes of these types of fires and explosions. The methodology included interviewing mining personnel who perform flame cutting or welding operations in underground U.S. coal mines and visiting mines to observe these operations, and MSHA reports of investigations and accidents statistics were analyzed. The results were used to identify and compare differences between flame cutting and welding practices and techniques in small and large mines, Eastern and Western mines, low seam and high seam mines, room and pillar and longwall mines, and between experienced miners and new miners. As a result of this study, best practices and interventions were developed to reduce the number of fires and explosions caused by flame cutting and welding. This paper provides a summary of this work. Electricity, as normally thought of by a layman's definition, is a man- made force that has no color, no odor, is not visible, cannot be heard, yet man can control it and make it perform his work for him. A person dare not cheat on it, for it then will master him. It has laws, rules, and regulations that must be strictly adhered to if it is to perform in the safest, most reliable, and economical manner. In the early days of coal mining the power source was man himself. Later man employed steam and compressed air to reduce his muscle power requirements needed in the extraction of coal. By the turn of the 20th century, electricity had become the most common source of power for the coal industry. Steam and compressed air are still found in use in isolated cases today for specific applications; however, they are rapidly being replaced by electricity. Electrical laws and regulations are quite extensive and somewhat complex for the proper generation and use of electricity. Man-made laws, rules, and regulations for the care and handling of electricity, designed for man's safety, are rigidly enforced by Mine Safety and Health Ad- ministration (MSHA), as well as the various state departments of mines.

Chemical methods have been tried to alter the clay or the system water so as to obtain pellets with desired properties. In an effort to reverse the trend of declining enrollments to mining engineering programs that began in 2015, the University of Arizona has implemented a number of interventions over the past five years, including ramping up its pre-college mining education and outreach, and undertaking several enrollment research projects. This article is the second of two installments to discuss the results of our latest study. The first part can be found in the September 2025 issue of Mining Engineering magazine. To better understand mining’s competitive position, the School of Mining Engineering and Mineral Resources conducted a comprehensive study to determine: 1. How prospective college students, parents and educators perceive the industry, related careers and the mining engineering degree. 2. Factors affecting students’ choices of degrees and career plans. 3. The roles parents and educators play and how they influence students.
