This paper presents a strength formula for the design of coal pillars. The formula is derived from results of laboratory experiments, studying the effects of primary factors influencing the strength of the coal specimens/pillars. Five primary factors, significantly affecting the strength characteristics of the coal specimens/pillars were identified and extensive laboratory investigations were carried out. The five primary factors were namely 1) coefficient of friction between loading platens and coal specimens, 2) elastic properties of the loading platens, 3) coal specimen geometry, 4) coal specimen size, and 5) rate of loading. Four to nine levels of variation for each primary factor on the strength of coal were studied. An empirical formula, implementing the variation of the primary factors affecting the strength of coal specimens/pillars, has been developed. A comparative analysis of the results provided by this and some well known formulae is also presented.

A project's rates of return (RORs)1, be it the internal rates return (IRRs) or one of the many IRR surrogates, frequently needs to be approximated. The success and efficiency an ROR- approximation procedure depend on the quality the approximation-initiating parameters, such as bounds or seed values (guesses). The existing approximation procedures commonly use bounds and guesses suggested by intuition rather than supported by mathematical considerations. This paper presents three mathematically founded ROR-bounding and eleven ROR-guessing approaches and examines their suitability by using examples of typical project cash-flowpatterns (CFPs). The calculated bounds and guesses not only improve the approximation efficiency, but also allow the process of the ROR discovery to be automated, thereby making it more convenient and reliable.

Gemcom PCBCTM is a software package which has been developed over the last 22 years for the planning and scheduling of block cave mines. This paper presents an update of the various research and development activities done to PCBC recently. It also provides an overview of the current capabilities of the software including tools for both feasibility type studies as well as tools for operating mines. PCBC is used extensively by prospective and operating block cave mines and some of the recent applications are described.

Canada's coal production is approximately 65.4 million tonnes of which 95 % is produced by surface mining methods mostly from the three Western provinces (British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan). The mines are highly mechanized; productivity gains during the past few years have ranged from 60 -80%. Truck/Shovel methods are common although Saskatchewan lignite is almost exclusively mined by draglines. This paper provides an overview of Canadian Coal mining industry vis a vis surface mining. Emphasis is on application and utilization of mining equipment and associated mining methods.

Throughout the history of power excavating machines, engineers have continuously tried to shape the main drive speed-torque characteristics to provide an optimum performance from each main motion. Selection of prime mover for the various motions has been the subject of many engineering studies and most forms of energy conversion have been tried. A new form of electrical power conversion looms on the horizon' as the most optimum yet. Controlled frequency operation of a squirrel cage induction motor increases the reliability of the most reliable form of energy conversion (electrical) found thus far and at the same time improves the performance characteristics.

The image-based On-line Particle Size Analyzer (OPSA) system has been developed at the University of Utah to measure particle size distributions under plant conditions where overlapped and segregated particles are being transported on a moving belt conveyor. Evaluation of the OPSA system at several plant sites has been completed. The results show a consistent agreement between the particle size distributions obtained from the OPSA system and those obtained from laboratory screen analysis of belt samples. These results and the stable performance of the OPSA system during the field tests suggest that continuous quality control of crushed products is possible using the OPSA system.

Conventional mine safety wisdom states that "the most efficient mines are also the safest." Since the 1980s, small mines (and contractors) have been targeted as the most dangerous ones because of their fatality records. Statistical testing of 1993 West Virginia safety and production data indicated that the most efficient WV mines were not the safest ones, considering correlations between the severity measure and tons per employee-hour, except for very small mines. This paper will present the results of an extended analysis of WV mine safety using 1993 and 1996 data, concluding with the method used to suggest current priorities for focusing interventions.

The Empire concentrator currently processes magnetite ore from the Empire pit which is approaching the end of its mine life. Over the past two years plant wide tests have been run to access the plant capability of processing ore from the neighboring sister Magnetite pit. The neighboring pit presents challenges to the Empire plant due to its higher feed grade, finer liberation size and higher percent silica which require additional secondary grinding and concentrating capacity to achieve concentrate grade. The I-75 Modernization Project (Segment 3) just north of Detroit, MI is being delivered as a Design-Build-Finance-Maintain (DBFM), which is a Public Private Partnership (P3). The project includes design and reconstruction of 5.5 miles of freeway, including a depressed section with a 20,630-ft long, 14.5-ft inside diameter, up to 100-ft deep stormwater tunnel, multiple drop shafts, and a pump station. The project also includes a maintenance term of 25-years. This is the first time MDOT has used a P3 delivery method for a major highway and tunnel project. This paper describes the development of the P3 documents, including performance-based tunnel and shaft technical requirements, and the approach to project risk management, financing, and insurance coverage.

Conventional logging tools such as density, neutron, and acoustic have ranges of investigation of tens of centimeters. The borehole gravimeter, however, has a range up to hundreds of meters. For example, from the center of a cylindrical orebody 0.22 g/cm3 denser than its surroundings, one can detect the boundary of the orebody at a radius as large as five times its height. More complex structures can be investigated with computer programs. We can predict the usefulness of proposed gravity surveys, or decide which suggested structure is most likely to have caused the results of existing surveys.

The abstract discusses the issue of mine equipment fires caused by hot surface ignition of flammable liquids. The research investigates the ignition probability of liquid fuels (diesel, engine oil, hydraulic fluid) on different metal surfaces (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel) under various ventilation speeds. The results show that the type of metal and ventilation speed influence the ignition temperature, with diesel being the most easily ignited fuel and carbon steel requiring a higher ignition temperature. The study provides data for understanding equipment mine fires and developing mitigation strategies.

The major health hazard from exposure to crystalline silica historically has been silicosis. Silicosis is the scarring of the lung from excessive exposure to crystalline silica. It has been recognized as an occupational disease for over two thousand years, since early Greek physicians noted the respiratory problems of miners, stonecutters, and quarrymen who were exposed to excessive quantities of mineral dust. During the industrial revolution, the incidence of the disease was greatly increased by the use of machinery which increased dust levels. Subsequently, the need for dust control was recognized and dust control measures were instituted. Silicosis is characterized by progressive breathlessness on exertion and develops over the course of years. X-ray images of the lungs show progressive scarring of the lungs. The symptoms are related to the amount of exposure to crystalline silica and the years of exposure.

Vertical magnetic surveys have been made over about 3, 150 miles of the crystalline area of east-central Alabama. A contour map (100-gamma interval) showing regional magnetic anomalies has been prepared (scale 1:250,000) from data points located at quarter-mile intervals on all public roads. Small one- and two-station anomalies were eliminated, leaving only areally extensive anomaly features associated with regional geology. The regional gradient was "filtered" from the basic data and the resulting magnetic configuration compared to the regional geology. Regional lines of vertical magnetic intensity trend northeast and follow the structural framework of the area. Correlations can be made between a large number of geologic and magnetic features. The strongest regional anomalies are associated with the Goat Rock, Bartletts Ferry, Towaliga, and Brevard fault structures. The Inner Piedmont area is characterized by a broad regional high. The magnetic values of the northern Alabama Piedmont grades gently northwestward, disrupted occasionally by elongate highs and lows associated with amphibolites or granites. Scattered throughout the Piedmont are anomalous areas of high magnetic intensity; some are related to magnetic-bearing rocks, and some Indicate possible mineralization. It is well known that the elimination of impurities such as iron pyrite, shale, clay, silica, etc., from coal, by floatation [Sun, 1954; Aplan, 1983] and selective oil agglomeration [Keller and Burry; 1990] depends on the fact that coal is hydrophobic, and the impurities are hydrophilic. The water contact angle has long been used to evaluate the hydrophobic nature of coal, first by Brady and Gauger (1940), who demonstrated that the contact angle of water on coals increases with rank, and passes through a maximum at about 88% carbon. Brown (1962) found that the contact angle of coal decreased with increasing ash content. Sun, and also Aplan, have reported a direct relationship between values of the contact angle and rank, and have related the contact angle to coal floatability. Horsley and Smith (1951) first demonstrated that the captive bubble contact angle may be used to characterize the hydrophobicity of a coal containing more than 80% carbon DAF, while Parekh and Aplan (1978) have shown that the sessile-drop technique may be used to evaluate the hydrophobicity of coal of any rank.

There are a large number of facilities throughout the world which handle coal, such as preparation plants. Many other facilities use coal as a fuel, such as cement and lime factories. Although coal can be handled safely and can be an efficient fuel, there are explosion hazards which are accentuated as the particle size is reduced. Particle sizes of coal which can fuel a propagating explosion occur within thermal dryers, cyclones, baghouses, pulverized-fuel systems, grinding mills, and other process or conveyance equipment. This paper discusses how explosions can occur within these facilities.

Lower cost per ton results from timely operator action, increased visibility of information to production and maintenance personnel, and better fleet management. When information is effectively integrated into fleet management systems lower costs result from higher availability, longer component life and reduced repair cost. This paper will present the objectives of the Caterpillar Vital Information Management System (VIMS) and provide actual examples of successful use.

Recently, the President of the Portland Cement Association, Robert D. Maclean, gave the keynote address at the Rock Products Eighth International Cement Industry Seminar. He said, after listing the seven plagues our industry is suffering, "none of these items I have listed is a sales or marketing problem. Further, none is a problem that can be relegated to long-term study by public or private research agencies. Tests were conducted to investigate the potential for recovering anthracite from preparation plant tailings. Samples were collected from tailings streams or slurry ponds of several anthracite cleaning plants. A washability analysis was conducted on each sample. The use of gravity-and surface-based cleaning processes for treating the 28x200 mesh tailings material was examined. Simulations were performed for various cyclone staging arrangements using published partition data for both water-only and dense-medium cyclones. Froth flotation testing was done on both precleaned anthracite and tailings material. Grade-yield curves were determined for various conditions.

Hibbing Taconite Company is located by the cities of Hibbing and chisholm near the center of the Mesabi Range, approximately 169 km (105 miles) from the Canadian Border. The plant site is equidistant from these two communities, about 6.4 km (4 miles) from each. A 169 km (105 mile) railroad connects us with the port of Superior, Wisconsin, where the pellet production is loaded into lake carriers for lower lakes destinations. Immediately to the south of the mine area is the world famous Hull- Rust-Mahoning Mine which produced more than 700 000 000 million tons of red ore between the years 1893 and 1973.
