The recent developments in refractory precious metal ore processing (Bio-oxidation, Autoclaving), and the revitalization of the more traditional roasting processes have attracted great attention in recent years and are indeed the focus of todays symposium. It must always be remembered, however, that the term refractory ore by definition means that the material 'must be capable of being treated at a profit". Given the high cost of the refractory processes, the requirement to be treated at a profit requires very close scrutiny during the evaluation phase of the property development. The M.G.M. film company has the latin motto Ars Gratia Artis meaning Art for Arts Sake. Ingeniatore Gratia Ingeniatoris (a very crude attempt at saying Engineering for Engineerings Sake) should not be the motto for mining companies intent on exploiting refractory gold deposits, but rather the wittily tilted heading for this paper "Take the money and run like a thief". The following hypothetical case studies show that the high technology solution is not always the best financial solution.

The idea of using only one strand for both sintering and cooling of the sinter is not new. In 1952, in the U.S.A. a sintering plant was built at Benson Mine (Star Lake, N.Y.), including : - 68 m2 or 735 sqft (8 wind boxes) for sintering, - 22 m2 or 237 sqft (3 wind boxes) for cooling. In the USSR, a large number of machines have been built allowing for cooling of the sinter on the strand, especially the 4 m (about 13 ft) machines, with : 252 m2 sintering grate area 60 m2 cooling grate area 312 m2 total grate area. However, such ventures did not prove very successful, and the IRSID embarked many years ago on a research program to discover : - what are the problems associated with cooling on a sintering strand ; - what are the possible solutions for industrial plants.

"Replacing the aging roadway access to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, thereby ensuring traffic safety and robustness in case of seismic occurrences, provided an opportunity for major design improvements as well as the development of a parkway that would include the construction of four new tunnels. With an eye to the future, the Doyle Drive replacement project aimed to meet the highest standards for environmental stewardship beyond regulatory requirements. Understanding that lighting equipment is the tunnel‘s subsystem that uses the most energy, the operator was looking for a sustainable solution to light the tunnels. An Intelligent Lighting Control System (ILCS), designed specifically for road tunnels, was acquired to individually control the almost 2000 luminaires lighting the four tunnels. This paper will show the results in terms of energy and operational savings generated over the nine months of operation between the commissioning and the conference in April 2016. INTRODUCTION Electrical & mechanical (E&M) equipment represents an average of 10 % of a tunnel total construction cost. Once the civil infrastructure completed, E&M equipment drives the main part of the expense during a tunnel useful life. Table 1 below describes the impact of various types of energy consumption and their cost impact in tunnels of less than 500 m. It is clear that lighting is the sub-system that requires the most energy. A good lighting strategy is the key to reducing energy consumption due to lighting and a viable solution that will bring important savings in tunnel operations.With a price of $0.14/kWh in California and a planned increase between 3% and 6% per year during the period 2013-2040, the tunnel operators could not afford to overlit the tunnels—particularly when they have to operate it for the next 30 years. However, they also need to maintain the right lighting level to ensure driver safety all the time. The Presidio Parkway project includes the Battery tunnels, which are 240 m (790 feet) and 230 m (750 feet) in length, and the Main Post tunnels, which are 280 m (920 feet) and 315 m (1030 feet) in length."

Among the thirty-five declared critical raw materials (CRM) in the United States, there is no sustainable domestic production for the fourteen of them, while for some others domestic supply does not meet the national demand. Numerous potential critical raw material projects are in advanced exploration stages. However, the price uncertainties for many of these commodities put feasible future production into question and come into contrast with overly optimistic price forecasts published in all feasibility studies related to such exploration projects. Thus, in this work, a newly developed smart computational tool is used to evaluate the real perspectives of several CRM exploration projects implementing actual commodity prices, and to conduct reverse calculations in order to find the prices at which each project can be viable.

This paper illustrates the application of geostatistics to a roll front type uranium deposit located in Wyoming. The steps involved in calculation of experimental variograms, variogram modeling and verification of the resulting models are described in detail. The resulting spherical variogram models for grade thickness and thickness show strong geometrical anisotropies. The major axis of anisotropy for both variables is approximately parallel to the axis of the roll front and the minor axis perpendicular to the roll. This model confirms the technique of drilling "fences" across the roll front, where the drilling is much closer together than the fences along the roll.

I consider it an honour to be the opening speaker in this afternoon's session on "Canadian Exploration". I also think it most appropriate that this joint meeting of the MMIJ and AIME should consider this subject, because Canada is a major exporter of mineral products and Japan and the United States are our two largest customers. Clearly, therefore, both countries have a valid interest in developments on the Canadian minerals scene. I represent the Mineral Development Sector of the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. I will therefore speak from the point of view of the Federal Government. At this point I would like to acknowledge the help and constructive criticism I have received from several of my colleagues in Mineral Development Sector in the preparation of this paper. In any discussion of exploration in Canada, it is essential to emphasize at the outset that Canada has a federal system of government, with powers shared between Ottawa and the provinces. Under our constitution, the federal government has jurisdiction over the north, and over offshore areas, while the provinces own the natural resources within their boundaries. They control the systems of land acquisition for exploration and the terns under which mining titles are issued, and are therefore able to determine the rate and conditions of exploration and development of these resources. It follows that the Federal Government can influence the exploration and development of the provincial resources only indirectly by consultation with provincial authorities. However, once the resources are developed and begin to flow to market, the Federal Government can exert a much stronger influence because of its constitutional right to control both inter-provincial and international trade, as well as through its general fiscal and tax powers.

This concept paper is presented in the hope of raising the awareness of mankind on the necessity for its peaceful coexistence with nature. It is a food for thought. It takes compromise and sacrifice of people, who will have to learn to curb their greed and move toward a more organic form of prosperity. A nature-friendly sustainability is first step toward the protection of nature that is critical to the mutual survival of mankind and nature. People need the resources from the finite earth to survive and nature needs the prevention of human destruction in order to continue to regenerate and provide. The contemporary notion of sustainability is self-serving. It serves the interest of industry by camouflaging itself to look like nature?s protector. The ?sustainability? concept presented in this paper aims to extend the longevity of the utilization of the limited natural resources for many generations to come. It is an important, responsible first step in creating a healthy sustainability concept that, when implemented, extends the longevity of mankind by the most efficient use of the finite resources on this limited Planet Earth, all the while taking into consideration the increase in anthropogenic activities due to exponential human population growth. This new definition of ?sustainability? has completely different characteristics than its contemporary versions. Nature has its own destiny, rules and principles. Being a part of nature, human society depends on it for survival and must play by its rules and never the other way round as in its initial pretensions. Society should not try to humanize nature, but rather to respect the rule of the nature in a peaceful way of co-existence. When implemented, this new concept of sustainability aims to affect the designs of engineered structures and revolutionize the recovery methods and processing of natural resources, such as mineral resources in the most efficient manner. Finally, this paper intends to stimulate critical thinking and initiate serious discussions aiming at producing a general consensus for the best definition for human society to not only enrich, but to extend its existence. Marcona Corporation produces about 3.5 million long tons of iron ore pellets annually on its two travelling grate pelletizing machines at San Nicolas, Peru. During 1969, these pellets will be shipped to customers in four marketing areas--Japan, the United States, Europe, and South America. All of these sales are on the open market, and product quality is a major concern. Typical chemical, structural, and quality test results for Marcona pellets are given in Table 1. [ ]

The Call for Papers described the session as "Top down applications; management tools for decisions, planning, investment/finance, and negotiations." In order to attract papers, and know which ones to include as well as those to reject, it was necessary to (1) define the executive suite, (2) review what had been done in previous APCOM symposia, and (3) find out what's happening now, what isn't being done, and what can be predicted. To accomplish this, especially the third task, senior managers throughout the mineral industry were generous with their time in telephone and personal interviews. Five papers were selected for presentation at the symposium and inclusion in the proceedings; the content is divided between the Executive suite in the mineral industry and those elements which apply to any Executive Suite. The Executive Suite is the top portion of the organizational tri- angle (I), those to whom the managers of functional areas such as exploration, production, finance, and marketing report. The make-up and specific activities within an executive suite reflect the organization and culture of its corporation. As there is no typical corporation, there is no typical executive suite; however, those who work within the executive suite typically do not have day to day operational responsibilities and either are, or report to, the Chief Executive Officer.

Early in 1977, Amoco Production Company and Houston Chemicals, a subsidiary of Pittsburg Plate Glass (PPG) Industries, started producing iodine commercially in northwestern Oklahoma. This is significant because it is the first plant in over 40 years to be built in the United States with iodine as its sole commercial product. With the exception of a limited amount of iodine produced by Dow Chemical in Michigan, the United States is dependent upon imports from Chile and Japan for its iodine needs. The two million pounds of iodine produced annually from the Woodward plant will supply over one-third of the United States' requirements. Routine analysis of subsurface brines by the Formation Water Lab at the Amoco Production Company Research Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, revealed unusually high concentrations of certain potentially economic minerals. Investigations determined that, of the minerals in question, iodine appeared to offer the best potential. The brines in question are located in the Morrow sands (basal Pennsylvanian) at a depth of 7,175 to 7.400 feet, in an area where Amoco has been active in a gas play for the past 20 years. The regional iodine concentration ranges from 10 to 700 ppm and averages around 300 ppm with the project area. The project is located 8 miles north and slightly east of the town of Woodward, where the well-developed, porous, and permeable sands of the Woodward trench contain large volumes of brine.

During recent years, there have been frequent investigations on the geochemistry of biotite. This work has emphasized, and no doubt was prompted by, factors related to mineral exploration, particularly for those deposits of the porphyry copper type. A large number of papers have been devoted to the obtainment of trace-element data from plutonic biotite. These data have been used to extract primary geochemical information pertaining to the parent magna and the hydro-thermal system which together give rise to porphyry copper deposits. In two early works, Putman and Burnham (1963) and Parry and Nackowski (1963) analyzed base metal contents of ferromagnesium minerals, primarily biotite, from various barrenfmineralized plutons of the Basin and Range Province. One similar conclusion from the two studies was that the Cu, Zn, and Pb contents of magmatic biotite served as indicators of ore development within the granitic rocks genetically related to ore. This theme was then pursued vigorously by a number of authors until the present time. Results, however, have been contradictory, as reviewed by Coope (1974). For example, studies by A1 Hashimi and Brownlow (1970), Lovering et a1 (1970), Putman (1972), and Graybeal (1973) continued to support positive primary relationships between the trace-metal content (usually copper) of biotite and associated sulfide mineralization. By studying biotite in close spatial association will sulfide occurrences, Putman (1972) and Graybeal (1973) developed models for base metal partitioning in magmatic systems based on their discovery of inversely distributed copper between silicate (biotite) and sulfide phases. Conversely, research by Bradshaw (1967) and Blaxland (1971) plus the recent findings of Parry and Jacobs (1975) and Kesler et a1 (1975) found little if any evidence to support a correlation of biotite base-metal or

"With increasing demand for steel and depletion of high-grade iron ore deposits, more research efforts are being directed toward extending the life of existing ore reserves and developing technology to treat low-grade iron ore resources. Among all the reported technologies, biotechnologies in mineral processing – specifically bioleaching and microbially induced flotation – have emerged to be considered as low-cost, environmentally friendly potential alternatives to many of the current mineral processing techniques. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current research on the use of microorganisms for iron ore beneficiation and, further, discusses the applicability of bioleaching, bioflotation and bioflocculation for the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores.IntroductionIncreasing global demand for raw materials has led to diminishing resources of high-grade iron ore. As a result, the mining and utilization of low-grade hematite, limonite, specularite, siderite and goethite ores have attracted more and more attention. However, these types of iron ores are of complex paragenesis and fine disseminated grain size, and often contaminated by phosphorus in the form of solid solution. The distribution of phosphorus throughout the iron mineral crystals prevents the effective use of physical separation techniques, and these complex ores are at present largely untapped due to a lack of cost-effective and efficient processing methods. Chemical leaching and roasting-magnetic separation approaches have been mainly tested only on the laboratory scale and are all either cost prohibitive or ineffective when used on low-grade complex iron ores."

Based on the 2010-2019 Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident report database, 91% of reported ground control accident in the US longwall mines were caused by gateroad roof instability. This can be related to the significant changes in loading conditions that gateroads are subject to from the development to the longwall abutment loading phases, combined with the thinly bedded shale roof, found in many US longwall coal mines. One of the challenges in designing efficient support systems is to understand the roof instability mechanisms along with support-roof interactions under this complex loading condition. Field monitoring of roof displacement and stress changes coupled with detailed analyses using numerical models are well-documented techniques to study the causes of roof instabilities. However, traditional modeling techniques require additional calibration to simulate delamination and buckling of shale roof, one of the main roof instability mechanisms in longwall mines. One alternative modeling technique is the UDEC Bonded Block Method (BBM) where bedded roof and support interactions can be explicitly captured. This paper presents the development of a BBM model of a longwall entry at a 180 m depth of cover with a three-entry gateroad layout along with roof extensometer monitoring results. The models are validated against the monitoring data, showing the potential for BBM numerical models capturing the complex roof and support system interactions to assist with optimizing gateroad layouts and support systems.

Introduction Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp. (ACMDC) started gold production at its Masbate gold mine early in 1980. This involved an open-pit mine and a 3.5-k/d (3850-stpd) carbon-in-pulp processing facility (Pizzaro and Antonio, 1981). When this operation started, the mine began stockpiling sub-grade milling material averaging 1 g/t (0.029 oz per st) gold. Furthermore, geologists estimated that there were additional low grade reserves within the ultimate pit limits. These amounted to 2.4 Mt (2.6 million st) with an average grade of 1.1 g/t (0.03 oz per st) gold. The success of low cost heap leaching prompted an investigation to determine if this tech¬nique would be applicable for the low grade Masbate ore. The findings were favorable and a series of laboratory tests were undertaken. These tests indicated the amenability of this subgrade milling ore to heap leaching. Depending on ore size, gold extractions of more than 60% were obtained. To further define operating parameters for a commercial heap leaching plant, a 400-t (440-st) batch pilot plant was built and operated. These test results were used to design the first commercial heap leaching plant in the Philippines. One design concern was the control of solutions during the rainy season. Due to the material's low grade, every effort was made to minimize capital and operating costs. To this end, surplus mining equipment from the copper operations of ACMDC and used machinery in the crushing circuit were considered. Location: The Masbate gold heap leaching operations are located on the northeastern part of Masbate Island, Philippines. This is about 480 km (300 miles) south-east of Manila. Climate: The climate is moderate with two distinct periods. The dry season runs from January through June, and the rainy season extends from July through December. During the wet season, the rainfall at the mine site averages 300 mm/m (11.8 in. per month) for a total of about 2000 mm/year (78 in. per year). However, heavy downpours in excess of 100 mm/h (4 in. per hour) can occur. Geology: Four distinct rock types have been identified in the pit area. They are tuffaceous agglomerates, andesitic agglomerates, metasedimentary rocks, and hornblende augite andesitic porphyry. The tuffaceous agglomerate occupies the northern and western flanks of the mine. Andesitic agglomerates are localized distinctly in the central portion of the volcanic plug within the mine site. The eastern boundary of the mine is occupied by metasedimentary rocks, whereas, the hornblende augite andesitic porphyry occurs as an intrusive within the andesitic agglomerate and tuffaceous agglomerate. Some areas of the pit contain high proportions of clay minerals, requiring an agglomeration step in the flowsheet. This ensures satisfactory percolation through the heaps. So, while developing its Two Piece Assembly, Goodyear noted a number of trends in the mining industry: •The global market sophistication of equipment and operations requires the packaging of products and services to provide the best return on investment. •Industry consolidation and growth have resulted in fewer, more powerful mining houses, leveraging purchasing power in the marketplace. •User productivity demands continue to drive original equipment manufacturers to develop higher pay-load equipment. •Technology needs include improved ergonomics, to reduce fatigue and increase operator productivity. •Increased laws and environmental regulation prohibit on-site whole tire disposal practices.

This is the 10th annual tabulation of US mineral royalties published in MINING ENGINEERING. The first year, 1982, the author solicited information about royalties and the cost of reserves. That column contained only a few royalties - not enough to tabulate. Since then, the response has been sporadic but the entries have grown to more than 300. Some have been deleted. Some of the older information has been deleted to make room for new entries. All indications suggest that the readers enjoy and use the information. But more information is needed. Russian practice In 1989, this column gave a brief history of mineral leasing and royalty payments as the concept applies to mining in the United States. This year's narrative deals with information about the mineral ownership in Russia. That country is in political and economic turmoil, including administrative systems and methods. And many laws are likely to change. What follows describes the Russian system of mineral ownership as of early 1992, according to Kirill Kavun. He begins "All the subsurface space of the Russian Federation with minerals contained belongs exclusively to the state. This forms the Common State Mineral Fund. Land parcels may be state, municipal, public or private property. They may be let to be owned and used by individuals, juridical persons, national/territorial or administrative/ territorial formations." This seems to apply to surface rights, as known in the US.

JOHN HAMRIC: Our next speakers are Richard Ghent, manager of environmental health and safety for CF Industries, Hardee Phosphate Complex, in Wauchula, Florida. Richard has 20 years' experience with environmental health and safety affairs. He has a bachelor of science degree from the University of South Carolina. With him is Daniel Warnock, who is supervisor of safety and training also at the Hardee Phosphate Complex. Daniel's experience is in safety programs and electrical training. Their presentation is "Regulations Versus Management Practice." RICHARD GHENT: Written procedures give structure to safety programs. At their best, they are brief and understandable to facility personnel and clearly identify roles and responsibilities. At worst, they attempt to recite the entire regulation they are intended to address. Some regulations, such as OHSA's Hazard Communication Standard, require employers to develop, implement, and maintain a written program. As written programs and procedures are developed, some basic questions arise: Is the program designed to achieve compliance with regulatory requirements or does management expect the program to go beyond compliance to some higher level of performance? Management may have difficulty in measuring and communicating performance expectations in safety. A facility with 4 million safe work hours does not suddenly become unsafe the day their safety record is broken. Generally, management expects safety programs to meet regulatory requirements and to protect the employer from enforcement actions and fines from regulatory agencies. Management also expects that safety programs will result in a safer work environment with fewer incidents, accidents, and near misses. But it is difficult to know when a safety program has succeeded. If the program is expected to go beyond compliance, what other standards should be included (e.g., ANSI standards, company management practices, lessons learned from inspections and audits, recommendations from safety committees, etc.) in the

To the casual observer there is probably no simpler appearing operation in the mineral industry than a limestone quarry. It might seem that the entire operation - from the drilling, blasting, and loading of the stone, its transport to a mill for crushing, washing and sizing, to loading into boats, railroad cars, or trucks for delivery to customers - can be comprehended at a glance. But no first impression could be more misleading. It is one of the purposes of this presentation to sketch the broad outlines of the extensive limestone industry in the United States which, measured in terms of volume of production since the end of World War II, has grown almost 300 per cent to a national level in 1957 of 384 million net tons.1 Another objective will be to discuss in more detail this industry in the State of Michigan. For this latter purpose, the Michigan Limestone Division plants at Calcite and at Cedarville will be used as examples. These descriptions will, we believe, show that the limestone business has complexities to match its size.

"The South Hartford Conveyance and Storage Tunnel (SHCST) project is a significant component of the Hartford Metropolitan District’s (MDC) long-term control plan (LTCP), which is overseen by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CTDEEP). This project will address a portion of the MDC’s Clean Water Project (CWP), which will reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs), eliminate sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), and reduce nitrogen released into the Connecticut River. The purpose of the SHCST project is to eliminate West Hartford and Newington SSOs, eliminate Franklin area CSOs discharging to Wethersfield Cove and minimize CSO discharges to the South Branch Park River. The locations of each overflow are shown in Fig. 1. In 2010, the district prepared a preliminary design report (PDR) for the SHCST project, which included relief of the Folly Brook trunk sewer and proposed to keep the tunnel boring machine (TBM) retrieval shaft within the city limits of Hartford. Figure 1 shows the 2010 PDR recommended tunnel route. Subsequent to the PDR, the objectives of the SHCST have slightly shifted. In accordance with ongoing revisions to the LTCP, relief of the Folly Brook Trunk Sewer is no longer necessary. Additionally, the MDC has decided to perform less sewer separation in the Franklin Avenue drainage area. To replace the sewer separation, new relief points are proposed within the Franklin area and will be diverted to the SHCST. Figure 1 also shows the current recommended tunnel route (Alignment F). During 2012, the MDC conducted an evaluation of the potential of connecting the proposed North Tunnel (originally proposed as an independent tunnel with its own pump station) into the South Hartford Conveyance and Storage Tunnel. This evaluation concluded that the two proposed tunnels could reasonably be connected together and operated as a single tunnel system utilizing the tunnel pump station at the eastern terminus of the South Hartford Tunnel (Fig. 2). It also was concluded that this alternative was less costly than two independent tunnel systems."

Dowsing is really IESG which inductively locates electric gradients (dv/dx) on the flanks of SP anomalies. "Sensors" are in one?s head. The "meter" consists of one?s body, limbs, and two $.69 welding rods. The method was calibrated near Mamainse Point, Ontario, where IESG-negative chalcopyrite-bornite-chalcocite-native copper ores reveal mineral zoning related to the IESG-positive Keweenaw fault, down which oxidizing solutions moved. In Michigan, the IESG-positive Keweenaw fault suggests that oxygen-bearing solutions from the Jacobsville Sandstone moved downward to oxidize hydrothermal sulfur to produce native copper, and to supply sufficient water to satisfy Walter White.
