"In recent years, much has been said and written on Lake Superior ores, giving the impression that the quality of the ore is deteriorating in grade and that the reserve of high grade ore is rapidly being depleted. Average analyses of ore produced in this district since 1902 show that the average quality has been practically uniform since 1910, and now closely approximates the average for the total reserves of merchantable ore.The accompanying tables and charts show the average analyses for the past ten years, weighted according to tonnage: The chart above shows graphically the average natural iron content for the old range, Mesabi, and grand total Lake Superior ore shipments since 1902.During the last ten years the decrease in iron content for shipments from all ranges except the Menominee was only' .05 of 1 per cent, while for the Menominee ores there was an increase of .052 of 1 per cent. These tabulations and the chart prove that the average quality of the total annual production of iron ore from the Lake Superior district is uniform. Mining men of the district know that all of the merchantable ores of every ore body are being mined out cleanly, and therefore the present average iron ore content of total annual shipments from the district may be expected to continue as long as the present merchantable ore reserves last. There is no logical reason to expect a decrease in the average iron content. Furnaces require ore of definite quality, and if this quality of ore cannot be produced from the natural ore bodies, it must be produced by mechanical means—that is, by concentration of low grade ores or iron formation."

The Office of Coal Research Program has been outlined in our Annual Report for a number of years and reported on by various members of the OCR staff as well as by our contractors. The program is national in scope and is intended to develop new and improved uses for our Nation's coal resources and to maintain coal in a favorable economic position, vis-a-vis, the other energy forms. A program has been developed that includes conversion of coal to gas, gasoline and other petroleum-type products, and to electricity. These projects are only one facet of the OCR program albeit an important one. In many of the conversion projects we have underway, original development work has been done with bituminous and sub-bituminous coal. It is the intention of this paper to present a general outline as to how lignite might fit into one or more of these projects as a raw material. Our national lignite reserves are vast in scope and this has been recognized in the OCR program by development of a project specifically for lignite and by including lignite as a test raw material in many other projects. Project Lignite is intended to develop the Cop Acceptor Process for conversion of lignite to a high B.t.u. gas. In this effort we have included the design, construction, and operation of a lignite gasification plant at Rapid City, South Dakota. The work is being conducted by the Consolidation Coal Company and is an outgrowth of their laboratory development of this process. The first portion of our effort included a detailed economic study of a somewhat arbitrary grouping of States designated Market Area A that could be expected to use gas manufactured in a lignite gasification plant. The area included the Dakotas, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Iowa. This geographical area could readily be served if a process could be developed for converting North Dakota's lignite reserves, estimated at 351 billion tons, to high B.t.u. gas. Our study showed that Market Area A had a potential commercial- industrial market of one trillion cubic feet of gas a year. To meet this demand, we believe that part of the load can be obtained from commercial lignite-to-gas plants. At the time of our original study, we concluded that gas could be delivered to the city gate in Market Area A at about 45¢. As a result of price escalation in the interim, our estimate today might be slightly higher, but not significantly so, since some parts of the process appear better today than they did at the time of the original projection.

The work to be described was part of an exploratory research program directed toward identifying potentially useful but little known reactions in extractive metallurgy. In particular, the major copper sulfide minerals, as a group, have long been considered insoluble in nonoxidizing acids (e.g. Forward and Barren, 1J60; Parsons and Ingraham, 1970; Peters et al. 1972). This generalization was considered to include nonoxidizing conditions in warm aqueous MC1 solutions (Ingraham et al. 1972) and, indeed, was consistent with our own chemical and mineralogical experience. On the other hand, under hydrothermal conditions, copper and sulfide species are carried in solution and deposited as sulfides in mineralized veins. The question that poses itself is: what are the mildest conditions of temperature and fluid composition under which commercially important copper sulfide minerals can be solubilized in the absence of an oxidizing agent? A reference to H2S formation during oxygen-sulfuric acid pressure leaching (Warren, 1958) of chalcopyrite, when the oxygen partial pressure was allowed to fall, provided a clue. In the present study, experimentation with chalcopyrite concentrate in dilute hydrochloric acid, under re flux conditions (in Pyrex flasks) and with an inert purge gas, revealed substantial amounts of H2S production and iron solubilization, cite negligible copper solubilization, after 2 ½ -4 days. Under comparable conditions the extent of reaction with dilute sulfuric, acetic and phosphoric acids was markedly less.

An acceptable source of concrete aggregate is available in Kansas City in a continuous, medium bedded, slightly dipping limestone unit. Removal is accomplished in shallow depth, 12 feet to 17 feet high, room and pillar mines. The accepted empirical design spaces 20 foot pillars 60 feet on center. A portion of the 20 foot unit is left in place for roof support. Rock and soil cover is variable to 100± feet maximum. Long-term stability of these mines is affected by numerous factors, including the above mine-rock profile, ground water conditions and mining practice. Crusher-run aggregate sells at the mine for $2.20 per ton, yielding a gross income of $2.00 to $2.80 per square foot of mine. Use of mine space for real estate development requires a new perspective in mine development. Mining practices to obtain long term stabile structures can become an over-riding factor as compared with minimum production costs and maximum extraction ratios. Poorly mined areas are unusuable for secondary purposes. Development cost for lease space in less desirable mines is substantially greater than those planned for a secondary use. Real estate development in mine space involves unique engineering problems. Properly engineered developments offer singular advantages. Warehouse lease space sells for $.50 to $1.00 per square foot per year; fully developed office areas may double these values.

Marine phosphorite deposits occur in Brazil, in the Bambui Group of late Precambrian or Early Cambrian age. The phosphorite is laminated, isoclinally folded, and is composed of black, elongated apatite pellets and quartz grains cemented by quartz and muscovite. Abundant, narrow quartz veinlets cut through the rock at right angles to the elongation direction of the pellets. The phosphorite is 0 to 80 meters thick and contains 5 to 30 percent P205. The deposit is elongate towards the northeast, and the central, thickest, and richest part is bounded by faults. Measured reserves are about 250 million tonnes that average about 13 percent P205. Preliminary testing indicates that grinding, scrubbing, and desliming will produce a material usable for fertilizer manufacture at a cost competitive with imported phosphate fertilizers.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating methods and technology that, when applied to existing continuous coal mining machines, may improve production and safety. Toward those goals, a microcomputer network has been designed that provides automated control and monitoring of all mining machine systems using a single twisted pair cable (two conductor stranded wire twisted together to provide a level of noise rejection). The network also provides -connections for intelligent sensors and systems for navigation and diagnostics. The flexibility of the network is demonstrated in that features can be added and removed without redesigning the whole system. A general description of the network's integration to a Joy' 16CM, Joy 14CM, Jeffrey 102, and a custom built auger machine is provided. The microcomputer networks for the Joy 16CM and the Jeffrey 102 have been installed onboard the mining machines and have been extensively tested at the Bureau of Mines test facility. The Jeffrey 102 system has also been tested in an actual highwall coal seam. Both systems have performed satisfactorily. The microcomputer networks for the Joy 14CM and the Auger Miner have been tested and await installation on the respective machines.

Foundry sands used to make molds and cores have been very important to foundrymen since metal casting began hundreds of years ago. They are now used in two basic ways, either in an uncured green state, grain-bonded with clay, or in a set cured state achieved with sand that, mixed with resins or oils, is cured by baking or by chemical reaction. The term sand, as generally used in foundry applications, may best be defined as material composed of granular particles of mineral matter, ranging in size from 0.5 to 2 mm in diameter. The particulate nature of the material may be the result of natural disaggregation or result from crushing and screening of rock or ceramic materials; crushed and screened products are sometimes referred to as "manufactured sand." Based on their origin, the raw materials for foundry sands will vary in grain shape, grain composition, relative surface, grain size, and grain distribution patterns. These properties, in addition to their chemical analyses, sintering point and expansion characteristics play an important part in the choice of sands used as the base molding or core aggregate in metal casting. Sands with different origins may be blended to produce specific compositions and grain size distributions. Early raw material requirements based on silica sand were simple, but as sand/core/mold technology became more sophisticated and binder technology continued to be developed, the physical properties of foundry sands became more critical. Silica sand is composed of quartz, along with, in most cases, small amounts of feldspar, mica, clay, and other common minerals. Although silica sand is still by far the most widely used base material in production of molds and cores used in metal casting, other natural mineral sands have their own unique characteristics and fill an important niche in special applications. As a result, the term sand, as applied to raw materials used in metal casting, has been logically extended to include granular materials composed of a group of minerals other than quartz. With increased use in advanced foundry technology, natural sands composed predominantly of zircon, chromite, staurolite, or aluminum silicate minerals and of granularized chromite or olivine, have become more than just alternate materials and are now commonly classified as sands when the grains are sand-sized. Foundry sand may therefore be considered under two categories: silica sands and non-silica sands.

Originally constructed in the 1930s, the 1-mile-long Sumner Tunnel is 31 feet in diameter and carries traffic deep below Boston Harbor, connecting Boston and East Boston. This project includes both design and construction for the rehabilitation of the nearly 100-year-old tunnel. The primary work includes repairing advanced deterioration at the tunnel crown with new precast arches that will add protection and strengthening. The restoration also consists of upgrading the tunnel systems, including permanently removing 75% of the existing exhaust duct suspended over the roadway to improve the overall ventilation system capacity and performance.

Rubidium and cesium were discovered by Bunsen and Kirchhoff about 100 years ago. These two elements are by no means as abundant as sodium or potassium. Their occurrence in minerals is widespread, but usually as minor constituents. There is no known specific ore containing rubidium, but rubidium is found replacing the. other alkali metals in .some minerals.. Perhaps the highest concentration of rubidium found in one mineral is in lepidolite, KLi(OH,F)2A12Si3010, which contains from 0 to 3.5%*Rb20. 0n the average, lepidolite contains about 0.5% Rb20. Other sources of rubidium are carnallite, KMgCl3?6H20; pollucite, H20.2Cs20.2AI203.9SiO2; rhodizite, R20.2A1203-3B203; biotite, H2K(Mg,Fe)3A1(Si04)3; sea water, rivers, marine and fresh water organisms, soils, and plants. Cesium, even though it is the least abundant. of the stable alkalies, has a specific ore. Pollucites a hydrous cesium aluminum silicate, may con¬tain as high as 42.5% Cs20, although again, the average Cs20 content is about 25% among the handful of known deposits. Other cesium-containing minerals are lepidolite and carnallite. Rubidium and cesium are very much like potassium in chemical properties, consequently, they are hard to separate. Because of the difficulty in obtaining pure cesium and rubidium compounds coupled with the scarcity-of supply, prices were high and the two elements enjoyed little industrial use. Tunnels as any other structures are affected by different loads and stresses. Generally, the loads on tunnels consist of both static and dynamic loads. These loads must both be considered in the tunnel design process. In this paper, the stability state of Jiroft water-transform tunnel is evaluated. Firstly, the in-situ stresses and then using Kirsch?s equations the induced stresses due to static loads in walls and crown of tunnel are calculated. Consequently, the strain caused by probable earthquake without considering the interaction between the concrete lining of tunnel and rock mass using seismic analysis is calculated based on free-field deformation. When the strain is determined, the simplified method of closed-form solution, Wang?s equations and Penzien?s equations are used to estimate the applied forces on the tunnel due to earthquake such as axial force and bending moment on a tunnel section taking into account the interaction of the tunnel concrete lining and rock mass. Results of this study show that the loads applied to the tunnel as a result of earthquake waves can be affect the stability of underground structures, especially long structures such as tunnels.

Detailed examination of the Sloan Ranch diamond prospect has shown that the Sloan 1 diatreme, the Sloan 2 dike, and the Sloan 3 horizontal sheet complex are all parts of the same kimberlite complex. Geologic mapping, geophysics, soil chemistry, test pitting, and drilling all helped to delineate the structure. Bulk sample testing yielded moderate grades with encouraging gem-to-industrial ratios, but no large stones were recovered. These test results, along with supporting mineral chemistry data, suggest that the Sloan Ranch complex is analogous to sub- economic occurrences located near the margins of the Archean cratons in southern Africa.

"Hecla's Greens Creek silver-gold-lead-zinc mill began using carbon dioxide rather than sulphuric acid to control pH in April, 2015. High pH levels in the grinding and lead flotation circuits are caused by the presence of re-mined cemented paste backfill in mill feed and need to be lowered to achieve good flotation response. Carbon dioxide has proven to be quite effective at controlling pH in the lead circuit with greatly improved pH target attainment. The allowable amount of carbon dioxide used is not limited by effects on lead-zinc selectivity and by poor froth characteristics, as was the case with sulphuric acid. Startup and implementation went smoothly, with few operational issues needing to be resolved. Early results from implementation of the system and its effects on mill performance will be presented. INTRODUCTION Hecla Greens Creek is a silver-gold-lead-zinc mine producing flotation lead and zinc concentrates, as well as a gravity gold concentrate. Besides their base metal contents, both the lead and zinc concentrates carry precious metals. The circuit is largely conventional, with SAG and ball mill grinding being followed by graphite removal preflotation, then conventional lead flotation and conventional zinc flotation. Both rougher concentrates are treated in regrind steps, followed by cleaner flotation. The cleaners tails are treated in an unorthodox bulk circuit to produce a low-grade zinc-lead concentrate marketed to Imperial Process smelters (1). BACKGROUND Backfill and Flotation pH The Greens Creek mine is an underground operation in which mined areas, after ore extraction, are backfilled, using rammed paste or pumped slurry. The backfill consists of mill tailings to which approximately five percent Portland or similar cement is added to enhance its compressive strength. Later mining near backfilled areas inevitably results in a considerable amount of old backfill being mixed with new ore before being shipped to the mill. Depending on orebody geometry, mining methods etc., the amount of backfill in mill feed is often 20% to 25% and sometimes even higher. Commercial cement, and consequently backfill prepared using it, contains excess lime. Because of this, backfill in mill feed is indistinguishable from the addition of a large amount of lime, so mill natural pHs often range above 10 or even 11. Similar situations have been recognized for many years at mines throughout the world (2)."

As opposed to a prescriptive-based design, a performance-based fire-protection system design allows the system planner the flexibility in choosing specific method, materials and design tools to achieve a preset goal. A different approach in fire protection and a powerful addition to existing method, the system has been around for many years, and has gone through numerous improvements. Despite its popularity in the building industry, it has not been introduced to the mining industry yet. As mines get deeper, increases in size and complication, mine fire safety system will also become increasingly challenging, a new and proven system should be able to great potential to eradicate many of the problems that are either unsolvable or cost-prohibitive with the traditional method. With increasing globalization and international exchange with other major mining countries a common language/practice also make the performance-based design method a desirable feature in mine fire safety system. This paper will first define a performance-based system, step-by-step design methods, likely impacts on fire-protection practices and possible challenges in implementing the system in US underground mines.

The economic viability of mineral companies not only depends on maximizing mineral recoveries but also on their ability to do so at minimum cost. Increasing pressure to cut costs has resulted In reduced staff, thereby decreasing the capabilities of routine metallurgical audits. This paper reviews a systematic approach to plant auditing which has been used successfully at several operations. Several case studies illustrating the potential benefits that can be attained from flowsheet auditing of mineral processing plants are discussed.

Longwall mining technological improvements have provided significant increases in productivity over the last 15 years. Longwall productivity is anticipated to continue to escalate with expanded application of automated equipment. Automation technology that will likely be adopted over the next 5 years is memory cut with shearer initiation of shield movement supervised by a couple of face workers. Operations using this technology will most likely relocate many production workers from the face to the outby gate entries and position several face workers outby the shearer, exposing workers to different health and safety risks. These changing risks are primarily related to worker relocation and expected increased production levels. Workers outby the face will most likely have less dust and noise exposure, but will be exposed to other safety hazards associated with outby equipment movement, materials handling, and gate entry ground movements. The face workers will most likely be exposed to higher respirable dust and noise levels generated by the equipment at elevated production rates. Methane gas emission is also expected to increase with faster mining rates. These operational changes and the control technologies needed to reduce redefined longwall worker hazards at semiautonomous longwall operations require examination to maintain the health and safety of mine workers.

PROPERTY AND PRODUCTION: Around 100 Million Tons of Recoverable Coal are available from the approximate 10,000 acres allocated to the mine. Over 1300 acres of surface land holdings extend well beyond the limits required for plant site, storage tracks, water supply reservoir, settling ponds and waste disposal. COAL: Extensive core drilled testing confirmed the early indicated high quality of the #6 Seam Washability data show less than four percent of the' coal seam required removal to provide a superior product for the available market. PREPARATION PANT DESIGN: The limited needs enabled Preparation Plant Design to meet the requirements without inclusion of novel equipment. The simplified needs afforded ample opportunity for considering increased automation where advantage or economy was antioipated. Plant design included protection of opportunity for pre-drying in advance of air cleaning the fine coal and accommodations for addition of Dense Media separating equipment in event warranted or required by future market changes. Protection is also afforded for addition of Raw Coal Storage accommodations in event warranted. Figure I shows the Preparation Plant Flow Sheet.

Surface coal mining productivity in the U.S. and Illinois has shown a general declining trend since 1969. The U.S. Department of Energy conducted an analysis in 1980 of the causes of declining productivity in different states. This paper presents a detailed analysis of changes in overall productivity and productivity in different functions such as overburden preparation, overburden stripping, reclamation, coal handling, etc. during the period 1970-1982. Statistical analysys techniques including multiple regression were utilized in the study.

Drilling of small diameter blast holes in the conventional tunnel driving system or mining operation still consumes a significant part of the time and money required to extend an opening in rock. The use of pneumatic drills for most small hole applications has been the dominant tool used by miners and tunnel men alike throughout the world. But now, a, trend has been started that is showing major inroads into the traditional areas of pneumatics drilling for all types of rocks. Operators dealing in very soft materials, such as coal, salt or potash, traditionally had the option to use hydraulic power for their drilling tools. Twelve to fifteen years ago, drillers in medium hard, but nonabrasive rock extended their drill machine option by helping to develop a drill that still used air to power the hammers, but relied on hydraulic power for the rotational torque and feed thrust. (1) This was a significant step forward, particularly for those who drilled in rocks that were compatible to rotary-percussion bits. However, this application was in fact somewhat limited to the limestone and dolomite formation of mid-United States and the softer sediments in Europe. Now high performance rock drills have been developed, using all-hydraulics for both the hammer and rotation, that have many advantages over the conventional pneumatic systems. In two previous papers on this subject, (2)(3) this author reviewed in detail: 1) the characteristics of each of the manufacturer's products that were on the market; 2) The specific advantages of the all-hydraulic drilling systems; 3) Data from the applications of these drilling systems that was in use; 4) What was needed to further develop this drilling system and utilize its potential in the mining or tunnelling cycle. Under the terms of the 1970 amendments to the Clean Air Act, the EPA established national ambient air quality standards for a number of pollutants. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) was one of these pollutants. These ambient air quality standards have had perhaps their biggest impact on the power utilities. In an effort to meet the air quality standards set forth by the EPA, utilities using high sulfur fuels have been forced to install flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems. The majority of FGD systems in operation today are nonregenerable systems, that is the by-product of the system is disposed of, usually into settling ponds. Limestone slurry is the most common reagent used to remove SO from the flue gases. The calcium carbonate (limestone) slurry interacts with the flue gas, absorbing the SO2 and forming a by-product of calcium sulfate/sulfite which is disposed of.
