The pioneers in pressure hydrometallurgy have provided a solid foundation during the past four decades. The pressure techniques are now capable of being used to push back the frontiers in the winning of metals. Pressure hydrometallurgy has been used to meet the objectives of extracting metals; purifying metal solutions, recovering metals; and rendering waste streams acceptable for disposal to waste repositories and the environment. Some examples of each of these functions are briefly reviewed. The applicability of pressure techniques to the recovery of precious metals is discussed.

"The solubilities of rhodium (Rh) in a molten silver alloy in doré-smelting conditions for treating copper refinery slime at temperatures of 1,000 to 1,300 °C were measured using a high-temperature equilibration-quenching technique and direct phase analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The results obtained indicate that the solubility of rhodium in molten silver is very limited: only 0.04 to 0.26 weight percent at 1,000 and 1,300 °C, respectively. The thermodynamic properties of rhodium in molten silver were estimated from the solubility data. The compositions of the solid rhodium alloys in equilibrium with molten silver-rich doré metal were also measured in this study. The excess rhodium in the doré alloy will precipitate during the refining as solid, greater than 99 weight percent Rh.IntroductionSilver refining is a core step of the processes of anode slime treatment and precious metals recovery in copper refineries (Hait, Jana and Sanyal, 2009; Ludvigsson and Larsson, 2003). It separates the oxidic materials, such as nickel oxide (NiO) and barium sulfate (BaSO4), from metallics after the de-coppering and de-selenation steps of the anode slime, and refines the silver bullion from the undesired elements present (Cooper, 1990; Hyvärinen, Lindroos and Yllö, 1989). Doré metal is a silver-rich alloy which after the smelting step will be refined electrolytically, and the remaining constituents of gold as well as the platinum group metals (PGM) will be subsequently recovered in their own processing stages.Because of low concentrations of PGMs in copper, they are typically soluble in the doré metal in anode slime treatment. This can be concluded from their binary phase diagram data with silver (Massalski et al., 2007). One exception is sometimes encountered in the anode slime smelting operations if the smelter feedstock is rich in rhodium, as may be the case if the raw materials contain secondary raw materials such as e-scrap. The solubility of rhodium in solid silver is less than 0.04 weight percent (Królas and Sternik, 1995), and its solubility in molten silver is highly uncertain. The only experimental information in the literature (Królas et al., 1993; Elliott, 1985) suggests that the silver-rhodium alloy system at 960 °C forms a eutectic, which locates less than 2 °C below the melting point of pure silver (Arblaster, 2015). Early observations (Rössler, 1900) propose that rhodium is insoluble in molten silver even if solid silver-rhodium solutions have been recently produced on a nanoscale (Kusada et al., 2010).The aim of this study is to measure experimentally the solubility of rhodium in molten silver at doré metal smelting and refining temperatures. The silver alloy used to mimic the doré alloy contained silver and about 1 weight percent of the alloying elements copper, gold, palladium, rhodium and tellurium. The experiments were carried out in metal-slag equilibria with nitrogen-oxygen mixtures as the atmosphere, employing an equilibration-quenching technique and using direct phase composition analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) (Jak, Hayes and Lee, 1995)."

Introduction The ore deposits of the Viburnum Trend in the Southeast Missouri Lead District constitute the world's largest lead producing district. Six or seven mines currently are in production in the Viburnum Trend. The principal minerals are few in number, simple in composition, and form simple superposition and replacement textures. The economically valuable minerals in the typical lead-zinc ores of the Viburnum Trend are the sulfides, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and siegenite. The most abundant gangue minerals are dolomite, marcasite, pyrite, calcite, quartz, and dickite. Four concentrates, lead, zinc, copper, and cobalt are produced from the ores, and they contain an interesting suite of trace elements, of which silver and cadmium are recovered at the smelter and refinery.1 Emphasis is given here to the variations in directions of ore fluid flow based upon interpretations of the positions of orebodies due to the ore fluids being impeded by Precambrian basement relief and upon patterns of ore mineral/metal zoning. The Precambrian basement relief and Lamotte Formation pinchout has exerted an important control upon the specific locations of orebodies in the Southeast Missouri Lead District. The locations of some orebodies along one side of Precambrian knobs or ridges strongly suggests that they are positioned on the side from which the ore fluids flowed. Other orebodies are located in positions that suggest that they formed where the ore fluids passed around or between Precambrian knobs. Patterns of mineral and/or metal zoning have been used in many mineral districts to interpret the directions of ore fluid flow. The mineral/metal zoning pattern correlates closely with that of the mineral paragenesis. The earliest deposited minerals tend to be deposited nearest to the source, the later deposited minerals next closest to the source, and the latest deposited minerals furthest from the source. In the Southeast Missouri Lead District, it is interpreted here that the early-deposited copper-rich ores are closest to the source of the ore fluids, the subsequently-deposited zinc-rich ores are next closest to the source, and iron-rich ores are furthest from the source.

Popular concepts of resin and conventional roof bolting The conventional roof bolt with shell anchor was first introduced for coal mine entry support in the late 1940s. The general concept of a reinforcement mechanism for this type of bolt is suspension. This means the shell anchor must be anchored well inside a competent rock stratum (such as sandstone, limestone or firm shale) so the bolt suspends the underlying weaker strata. This concept has and will continue to dominate the use of conventional roof bolts. Under this concept, the conventional roof bolt is not suitable for the stratigraphic sequences in which a strong, firm stratum is not available within the economic anchorage horizons.

Introduction The disposal of mine tailings, development rock, and other unwanted refuse material underground in mines by using pneumatic conveying techniques has been undertaken in the coal industry for many years. Similar equipment has been utilized for backfilling hard rock mines and is currently being applied in a gold mine in South Africa where development rock is being stowed in the mined-out stopes to help reduce the incidence of rock outbursts. On a limited scale, pneumatic conveying has been applied for backfilling uranium mines and one particular mine in New Mexico, U.S.A., has used this technique for 8 years. Other uranium mines in this area are now considerinq the dry backfill technique to eliminate the problems associated with hydraulic fill. The need to backfill in uranium mines is primarily of importance to improve ventilation, stabilize the pillars and roof, and possibly to extract a larger percentage of the uranium ore. If this can be achieved by utilizing the tailings from the beneficiation plant and using rock from the development headings which in itself may be slightly radioactive, then a greater benefit can be derived. Backfill can be achieved with hydraulic fill methods by running slurry into the stopes and allowing the water to decant and return through the footwall development entries to sumps for pumping to the surface. However there are several disadvantages associated with this method in that water is percolating throough the mine workings; it is necessary to build bulk heads in flat lying deposits; it is difficult to fill right to the back; and the decanted water takes with it quantities of the finer sand particles which results in maintenance problems with the mine pumps. Pneumatic conveying can overcome these problems in that the voids can be completely filled with high degree of compaction, heavy bulk heads are not necessary, the development rock can be added to the pneumatic system for disposal underground so eliminating hoisting cost to the surface, and cement can be added to the wetted material. The central question concerning the health risks associated with mining and processing of taconite ores in the Eastern Mesabi Range is ??does asbestos, of any variety, occur within the gangue mineral population?? Free silica in the form of quartz does exist in the taconite, but silicosis has been relegated to a secondary issue. The focus has shifted to the asbestos minerals and the malignancies that might occur following low-level exposure to dust. Although mineral fibers do exist in the Mesabi taconite ores, Ross, Nolan and Nord conclude ??no asbestos?, as explained in their contribution ??The Search for Asbestos within the Peter Mitchell Taconite Iron Ore Mine, near Babbitt, Minnesota?. Their area of study is located in the eastern Mesabi Range. It is here that the tectonic and metamorphic effects associated with the intrusion of the Duluth Gabbro have been profound. A variety of amphibole minerals have developed as a result of these geological events, some with names recognized within the US Asbestos Standard. The issue tackled by the authors is whether or not these amphiboles are present in the mine and if so whether or not they are asbestiform in habit.

Phelps Dodge’s Morenci copper mine has had six drills, six track-dozers, 16 shovels, two loaders, and 90 haul trucks equipped with either Caterpillar, Aquila, or Modular GPS systems for nearly three years. The Caterpillar Computer-Aided Earthmoving System is an open-architecture system, which allows for inputs to enhance orientation solutions and system functionality. This system has begun a new phase that leads to an intelligent mining system. Optimization techniques of the current system and inputs are reviewed. In addition, some practical issues of implementing new technology in a mining environment have been identified to aid in this new phase.

Sustainable development of mineral resources is based on a spatial model of the orebody that is only partly known from exploration drilling and associated geological interpretations. As a result, orebody models generated from the available information are uncertain and require the use of stochastic conditional simulation technique. This paper considers three methods for simulating orebody geology: (1) pluri-Gaussian simulation that limits the allowable contacts between the various units; (2) sequential indicator simulation using indicator kriging; and (3) an experimental multiple-point approach that captures some higher-order spatial statistics. The data requirements of the methods, how to meet them in mining applications, and performance characteristics are discussed. The application of these methods in a hypothetical deposit consisting of three geological units provides a comparison and illustrates the advantages of the different simulation approaches.

The Grenville structural province, a 400 km-wide belt of Precambrian metamorphic rocks which crosses the province of Québec in a northeasterly direction, is the host of several wollastonite occurrences. Most of these are found in marble and calc-silicate rocks enclosed within or located near intrusive bodies. Reconnaissance and detailed mapping of such zones have helped to identify areas of interest for wollastonite exploration. The most important zone is located in the huge Lake Saint-Jean anorthosite massif in the central part of the Grenville. A recent geological mapping project has revealed the presence of wollastonite in metasedimentary faulted remnant of the roof. The main occurrence consists of diopside and wollastonite in a zone at least 3 km long and 150 m wide. Preliminary sampling suggests and average grade of 50 percent wollastonite with an aspect ratio of 151. Other wollastonite deposits occur in the western part of the Grenville, mainly north and west of Montreal, where the Morin anorthositic complex and a large syenite mass intrude the metasedimentary rocks of the Grenville Supergroup. Marble bands with up to 70 percent wollastonite occur locally at the southern margin of the complex or as an inclusion in the syenite. Significant wollastonite occurrences have recently been found in the eastern part of the Grenville. One of them is located in metamorphosed calcareous rocks which are part of the granulite facies Manicouagan metamorphic complex. A representative sample analyzed 54 percent wollastonite. Farther south, an inclusion diopside-wollastonite gneiss containing an estimated 40 percent wollastonite occurs at the margin of the Pentecôte River anorthositic complex.

The major goal of this study is to decrease iron content in wet-process phosphoric acid. Reducing the amount of post-precipitated sludge in the acid is another important objective in this investigation. In order to achieve these goals, research efforts have focused on bench scale testing of an iron-chelating reagent to remove iron from phosphoric acid produced from South Florida high-iron and -magnesium phosphate concentrate, and plant testing using freshly produced concentrated acids for reducing the post- precipitated sludge. The data obtained in the above studies suggest that the addition point of the precipitating reagent is very important, as the precipitated iron compound has higher solubility at higher P2O5 concentrations. Up to 60% Fe2O3 removal efficiency is achieved depending on the amount of the reagent, concentration of acid used, and operating conditions. The addition of precipitating reagents to freshly concentrated phosphoric acid leads to a decrease of up to 84% in sludge volume percentage depending on acid type and clarification conditions. Decreasing the volume percentage of the sludge facilitates acid handling as well as decreases the adherent water- soluble P205 leading to lower total P2O losses.

Gas properties and possible sources are outlined for the various gases that are commonly encountered underground. Assessment of potential gas hazards prior to construction is discussed. Measures for mitigating the problem during construction are summarized. This RETC Session on Gassy Ground has been organized by the Underground Technology Research Council (UTRC), Technical Committee on Gassy Tunnels.

Before you begin mining aggregates in Oklahoma, you must first look at the market and ask these questions: (1) Is there a need for additional aggregate production? (2) Can we produce the aggregate efficiently enough to compete? (3) Is the deposit close enough to the market? If you can answer "yes" to each of these three questions, then you are ready to start the process for mining aggregates in Oklahoma. The first consideration to be made is whether the aggregates produced will need to meet state specifications. If you do not want to meet state durability standards, there are numerous formations you can mine and produce aggregates. We will deal only with the formations that will meet state durability standards. These formations are located in the southern half of Oklahoma and in the Tulsa area. Some of the formations that contain limestone, dolomite, and sandstone that will meet state durability tests are West Springs Creek, Kindblade, McKenzie Hill, Butterly-Royer, and Rush Springs Formations. Granite and rhyolite also are found in Oklahoma and can be used as construction aggregates. Once an area has been identified as having durable material, and drilling has verified its properties, a permit must be secured from the Oklahoma Department of Mines, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, and any other applicable agency before construction of a plant occurs. There are many different brands of crushers available, but all work on one of two crushing principles-either compression breakage or impact breakage. Each type has its application in different industrial-mineral types and the desired end product. A typical small crushing plant would start with a jaw crusher for primary reduction, and then employ one standard cone and one shorthead cone for secondary reduction. One grizzly would be in the circuit with one finished-product screen and three to four finished-product stackers. Natural sands and gravels are found in rivers and old river channels. These too need to be tested to see if spec product can be produced. All of our sand operations have very little gravel; thus, we do not process the gravel. The sand is processed through classifying tanks for gradation.

If an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM is operated effectively tunneling can be carried out producing negligible ground movements. Using the methods given in this paper face losses of the order of 0.5% and less are generally obtainable using an EPB. Operating the EPB TBM in this manner reduces the requirement for the building protection measures used to protect surface structures. This can result in a considerable cost saving for the construction of a tunnel under built up areas. This paper to give guidance on the causes of ground movements around a TBM and the methods of running an EPB TBM that will minimize those movements. Details of how this was successfully done during the construction of the Bangkok Metro are given. Equipment which will reliably produce high velocity water jets for use in rock excavation is now available. This report reviews some cases where water jets were used in excavating low to medium strength sandstone in Colorado and Utah. The primary discussion is of water jet assisted rotary drilling for blast and bolt holes in tunnels, shafts, and chambers. The subjects include drilling performance, effects on work environment, safety, and controlled blasting results. Information is also presented concerning trench excavation utilizing water jets.

The importance of factoring mining dilution into the estimation of ore reserves in an open pit mine is discussed. An example that relates the issue of mining dilution to the size of the smallest volumes that can be mined selectively is given. The relationship between the size of the selective mining units (SMUs) and the variance of their average grade is presented. The concept of variance reduction and its use in factoring mining dilution into geostatistical ore reserve estimation is described. An approach to estimate a variance reduction factor by way of conditional simulation is introduced.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Henderson mine utilizes a highly mechanized, continuous panel-caving system to extract ore from a deep, massive, molybdenum deposit. The mine site, lo¬cated 80.5 km (50 miles) west of Denver, is situated at 3170 m (10,400 ft) above sea level in a steep valley on the eastern side of the Continental Divide. The mill site, located on the western side of the divide, is linked to the mine via a 15.5-km (9.6-mile) railroad tunnel. Mine production is scheduled to reach 27 215 t/ d (30,000 stpd) from the uppermost production level. This pro¬duction rate will have been reached within the four years following an intensive ten-year preproduction development program. A second production level, due to come on stream in later years, will expand production capabilities to 31 751 t/d (35,000 stpd). The mine, which employs approximately 2000, has blocked-out ore reserves of 220 Mt (242 million st) at an average grade of 0.42% MoS2. Geology The Henderson deposit is composed of two partially overlapping ore bodies that lie 1080 m (3600 ft) beneath the peak of Red Mountain. The ore bodies are entirely within a Tertiary rhyolite porphyry intrusive complex that has intruded Precambrian granite. The de¬posit is elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 670 x 910 m (2200 x 3000 ft). In section it is arcuate with an average thickness of 185 m (600 ft). The top of the deposit is at an elevation of 2610 m (8700 ft) while the lower limits range from 2340 m (7800 ft) on the west to below 2100 m (7000 ft) on the east. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore bodies and consists of molybdenite and quartz in random to subrandom, intersecting, closely spaced veinlets. Cavability RQD (rock quality designation) * values measured from Henderson drill core and compared with the RQD values from the Climax and Urad block-cave mines in¬dicated that the Henderson ore would cave but with difficulty and that a high percentage of the cave ma¬terial would be blocky. Initial caving experience shows the Henderson ore caves easier and with greater frag¬mentation than was indicated by the RQD values. Pos¬sible reasons for this are: 1) The greater lithostatic load at the Henderson has a greater effect on caving and fragmentation than anticipated. 2) The relief of confining pressure due to caving action and brittleness of the rock is enhancing breakage. Mine Layout The Henderson mine layout was designed from its inception for a large-scale, rubber-tired, continuous panel-caving mining system. The ore body is vertically divided into three major mine levels (Fig. 1). The top¬most level (8100 level), which is 2469 m (8100 ft) above sea level, is the current mine production level. Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems are currently recognized as a necessary tool for the management of projects. Currently, CAD is used for TBM and conveyor setups, concrete lift design and overall constructability reviews. Typically, such CAD models exist only in 2 dimensions. The advent of more powerful computers, enhanced CAD programs and after market animation packages provides tremendous potential to the Tunneling industry. In particular, effective application of these technologies enhances cost, time and quality in field operations.

The City of Toronto's Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors (NTC) ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. 120 m of Starter tunnel and 70 m of Tail tunnel were excavated with roadheaders to help with the launch of the TBM and as part of the contract base scope work. JayDee Canada in Collaboration with Everest Equipment Co. developed an innovative approach to design and build a stand-alone Ring Machine Erector nicknamed Enterprise to erect precast segmental lining in Starter and Tail tunnels in lieu of Cast-In- Place concrete. This paper describes the design and provides feedback on the innovative procedure used to install the rings.
