Caterpillar has been involved in highwall mining since the purchase of Bucyrus in 2011. The Cat® HW300 is a continuation of the Superior Highwall Miner that was first sold in the USA in 1994. Currently, there are more than 80 machines supplied worldwide, and Caterpillar envisions increasing the population steadily in the coming years. The Cat highwall miner product group, based in Beckley, WV, has been involved in the sales of all miners to date. With the dealer model that Caterpillar is using, more people, dealers in particular, need to be trained on the application of highwall mining. A site investigation is a highwall specialist?s work, and Caterpillar assists dealers and customers in determining the technical feasibility of highwall mining on mine sites. With the ever-increasing amount of requests, it proved to be important that people without highwall mining expertise, yet who are familiar with mining, could perform a very quick analysis of a potential highwall mining site to determine at an early stage if it is worthwhile to invest the time and money of all parties?customer, dealer, and Caterpillar?in further follow-up. Therefore, Caterpillar would like to introduce the Cat HW300 QuickScan tool.

"In underground mining, machine design is predominantly dictated by mine conditions and individual customer desires. In partnership with Foresight Energy, J. H. Fletcher & Company was tasked to design and manufacture a new roof bolting machine with six independent drilling apparatus on board capable of drilling and bolting the roof and ribs with material handling. This is the first Fletcher® six-head machine to be designed and built for the mines in the United States. The machine is intended to work in the Illinois Coal Basin.The objective was to produce a machine capable of drilling and installing six bolts simultaneously with a limited number of operators. The goal of the mine is to decrease the time to bolt a cut to improve the safety level of the current roof bolting method, improve efficiency and to improve the bottom line cost of entry development. The customer wanted four mast feed drills at the front of the machine dedicated to installing roof bolts and then another two mast feed drills behind them dedicated to rib bolts. This dictated the requirement of latched controls, which would allow the operator to start drilling one hole and then latch the controls to be able to move on to the next. To accomplish this, we developed a unique hydraulic latch circuit to maintain operator safety and compliance. Guarding was added to prevent an operator from coming into accidental contact with a latched drill.The result of the design is a machine with a single platform and six independent masts with drillheads: four masts strictly for drilling and installing roof bolts on the front of the platform and two masts on the back of the platform for rib bolts. The feed and rotation controls at each operator's station include a latch control for drilling. The latch control will allow the operator to lock in the feed and rotation once the hole has been collared, allowing the operator to move on to the next hole. The rear of the machine is equipped with material handling. There are two material pods with winch controls as well as a mesh rack that includes mesh lift, mesh tilt, and mesh sump.The six-head roof bolter allows fewer operators to drill and install roof and rib bolts, which in tum lowers the miners' roof exposure per cut. This design reduces the operator's exposure from the inherent pinch points and rotary hazards once he has engaged the latch drilling. Therefore, the machine will help to decrease the time to bolt a cut, improving productivity while enhancing the ability to operate the machine safely."

In underground mining and tunneling, machine design is predominantly dictated by mine conditions and individual customer desires. In partnership with Australian companies WDS Limited and Cram Fluid Power, the engineering department of J.H. Fletcher & Company was tasked to design and manufacture roof bolting modules to be mounted off both sides of a roadheader, providing in-cycle bolting. The objective was to produce a boom and bolt module that would allow an operator to bolt from a remote location, eliminating the need for miner to work in unsupported ground. The bolt module needed to operate in front of the cutting boom, but retract to a parked position out of the way during the cutting cycle. Due to Australian electrical approval requirements, it was desirable to design the module with minimal use of electrical controls. The need for multiple, complex, drill steel and bolt handling steps led to the need for a custom hydraulics package to automate several of the movements. The result of the design is dual drill and bolt modules mounted to a multistage boom with over 24 feet (7.31 m) of extension. Each unit rotates and tilts to meet the bolt pattern requirements in conjunction with the stow and load requirements. The bolt module builds on previous designs incorporating a modular assembly with each sub-component designed to be replaceable and adjustable independently from other machine components. Each major component is painted a different color to help the operator make the connection visually from the module to the operator?s control valves. Hydraulic package valves were designed to automatically control several of the sub-components during the drill cycle, reducing the number of steps a drill operator would, otherwise, have to do manually. This design removes the operator from working in unsupported roof and away from other inherent hazards, putting them at a safe distance on the operator?s platform. The cutting and bolting equipment has been combined into one machine, which is advantageous in single entry drifts because there is no need to place change equipment. The hydraulic package valves eliminate the need for any electronics, thus avoiding any electrical regulations with respect to the controls. The addition of these modules to the roadheading machine increases miner safety and streamlines production while meeting the ground control support requirements.

Transportation and the logistic requirements are set very high for the German coal mining industry. Short transportation resources, crowded quarters, and long transportation distances to destinations are some basic conditions that logistic employees of the mines have to deal with. Therefore, in the context of these processes, human effort and technology are faced with great challenges. There can be a total of 300 transport units, depending on the size of the mine. Every day, they are moved through a nearby 150-km-long transportation network of floor and monorail tracks. Of these transport units, 150 are new, and the other 150 units are split into cross traffic units that are moved only in the underground and return travel units. Beside track-bounded transports, all material transports take place in the shaft. As a result, many involuntary transports and changes in the means of transportation make the daily work more difficult. Typical transports in the shaft include the supply of new materials from above to below, as well as returnable goods from below to above. Cross traffics throughout several levels, which are rather rare, would have to be handled above the shaft. Due to limited shaft capacity, these cross traffics should be avoided when possible. Based on the gas resources in coalmine slopes, track-bounded transports using monorails (powered by diesel or rechargeable means) are preferred. This depends on the road degree, the depth, and track cross section of the shaft/slope. The variety of the material spectrum includes more than 100,000 different types of material.

In response to the mining of reserves with increasingly adverse round conditions and the roof support recommendations of current rock mechanics theories, roof support systems have continued to improve. A few of these newer bolting systems. while giving improved performance, require a new method to check bolt installation. Previous1 , a torque wrench had been the sole means to check the installed torque of a roof bolt. However, due to the characteristics of soma of the newer bolting systems which can prevent a reliable manual torque check and a recent change in the federal roof control regulations, an alternative method to a manual torque check is gaining acceptance. This alternative method improves monitoring the hydraulic pressure of the roof bolting machine torque circuit and provides a safe, reliable and quick wav to check bolt installation in those instance when an accurate manual torque check cannot be made.

Surface control can prevent the falls of ground between primary roof support systems and rib support. Using existing industrial products, and adopting them for mining applications, has historically attained surface control in underground mining. However, the latest innovative solution, a revolutionary wire mesh product, is designed specifically for underground mining applications jointly by Bekaert and Orica. This knotted wire mesh, FlexKnot? 2500 and FlexKnot? 3500, uses smaller gauge, higher tensile strength wires, than a chain link fence or welded wire mesh. The higher tensile wire enables the mesh to achieve greater ultimate load-bearing capacity, with significantly lower overall weight. Test results, obtained at the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator facility, illustrate the comparisons of the new FlexKnot with traditional 8- and 10-gauge welded steel mesh. The FlexKnot is superior in deflection, load-bearing capacity, and stiffness?categories that are critical in achieving safer surface control. It also offers enhanced corrosion resistance because of the galvanized coating applied on the individual wires prior to the knotting process. Case studies from underground coal mine installations confirm that FlexKnot has the ability to significantly reduce installation cycle time and to minimize use and repetitive manual handling of individual mesh panels. An added advantage is the ability to supply FlexKnot in rolls for quick and easy handling for either rib or roof support application. When using rolls, the bolter can install the entire roll with one continuous forward motion, unlike the wasteful back and forth travel for mesh panel.

This paper describes the importance of considering ground control measures when importing U.S. continuous mining technology in foreign countries. Important ground control factors are discussed. Each year the USA exports a significant amount of continuous miner equipment (i.e. continuous miners, roof bolters, coal haulers, shuttle cars, continuous haulages, scoops and feeder-breakers). International customers see the opportunity to significantly improve their productivity and increase their longwall gateroad development rates by implementing the room-and-pillar (place changing) mining systems used throughout the USA. However, a number of issues are often overlooked or not thoroughly evaluated when selecting the equipment, often resulting in lower than expected productivity. Ground control is one of the critical factors that must be addressed. Since 1993, the author has assisted numerous international customers and manufacturers with implementing or improving the performance of continuous miner and room-and-pillar systems in Australia, India, Mexico, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. An essential first step is to conduct a thorough ground control study, and then integrate its findings into mine layout, equipment selection and section operating plans. Based on actual case histories, the author will present a number of examples and "Do's and Don'ts." Another key to success is the involvement of manufacturers and suppliers with customers when implementing new systems and technology. The importance of allowing for cultural evolution by both management and workers for acceptance and successful implementation of any new system is also discussed. Over the past ten years, the global coal industry has gone through some very dramatic changes. Countries that previously experienced a freight advantage, such as Australia shipping coal to Japan and Korea versus the United States, are finding they are now in a world coal market similar to other commodities and products. Today, coal prices arc stated F.O.B. at the consumer, and the origin is often irrelevant. Also, previously state-run coal industries have been privatized, such as the United Kingdom, and others such as Poland and India are currently going through the same transition from state-run to the private sector. In all cases, the key to continued viability, or survival, depends largely on reducing costs in order to compete for a market share. Two ways exist to reduce costs. First, almost everyone tries to reduce expenditures. Depending on the circumstances at a given mine or in a specific country, this helps to some point. However, most find that secondly, production must be increased to achieve the necessary cost reductions to compete in today's global coal market. As a result, over the past ten years, foreign companies and countries have looked to the USA for new mining methods and systems to significantly increase productivity. Thus, a major portion of American equipment manufacturers and suppliers sales have been exports, which has played a major role in helping to "keep-the-doors-open" for a number of companies through the lean 1990's, when American coal companies were postponing capital expenditures and expansions. As foreign companies and countries have looked to the USA for ways to improve productivity, they have become particularly interested in continuous miner equipment systems and most often "room-and-pillar," "bord-and-pillar" or "place changing" mining systems for four reasons. First, in countries such as the United Kingdom and Germany, who have been longwall mining for generations, there remain numerous remnant small pockets of reserves in existing mines that are either too small or too difficult to longwall mine, and are conducive to the flexibility of continuous miner systems. Second, for countries such as Australia, who have experienced the constant problem of developing longwall gateroads in a timely manner to avoid longwall move delays, new or alternate methods are required. Third, companies and countries using roadheader machines on coal production are recognizing the increased productivity potential of continuous miner equipment. Fourth, countries such as South Africa and India, where a substantial amount of the production comes from conventional mining methods, "drill-and-blast", companies are recognizing the opportunity to improve by implementing continuous miner technology. Colliers & Associates, Inc. has found that over the past eight years too often foreign companies or countries purchase American continuous miner equipment without first conducting a thorough geologic, geotechnical and ground control study for the reserves to be mined. The problems are compounded by not developing mine plans, and submitting them to the regulatory authorities for approval prior to purchasing and even implementing the equipment.

Over the past three decades, the U.S. coal mining industry has widely used cable supports to supplement traditional primary bolting systems, especially in difficult ground conditions. However, increased mining activity in adverse conditions has underscored the limited effectiveness of the non-tensioned, partially grouted cable supports used to supplement primary bolts. Roof failures in conditions such as corrosive environments, highly laminated strata, low overburden depth and water intrusion have demonstrated that the need for cable technology has reached beyond the traditional non-tensioned, partially-grouted cable tendon. Furthermore, declining market conditions and increased competition for coal customers has demanded that new cable bolt technology be costeffective and readily adaptable to the mining cycle. Jennmar Corporation has developed several cable bolt technologies that can be used as stand-alone solutions or in concert with one another to mitigate adverse conditions. These technologies include rapid tensioning of cable supports, structural surface control and polyurethane injection. The case studies presented in this paper use one or more of these technologies to address adverse mining conditions or special ground control problems.

Following a massive rib wall failure along the reclaim belt of the large underground surge bunker at CONSOL?s Bailey Mine, a multifaceted, cleanup and rehabilitation effort was initiated to rapidly stabilize the bunker rib walls and place the bunker back into production. Rehabilitation of the bunker included infilling and re-mining of the failed excavation area, installing a system of horizontal tie-back cable bolts, constructing a large knee wall at the base of the rib, reducing water inflow, and providing drainage for rib water. As a result of the coordinated effort, the bunker was safely placed back into production within 38 days. The 7500-ton surge bunker, an engineering feat in itself, was constructed in 2003 to accommodate production surges from two longwalls. In 2005, 14.8 million raw tons passed through the bunker. The 22-foot wide by 75-foot high surge bunker excavation extends as much a 52 feet below the base of the Pittsburgh seam. The bunker excavation measures 325 feet in length, with feeder and reclaim belt excavations extending the bunker excavation by approximately 500 feet. The massive rib roll, which occurred near the bottom of the reclaim belt slope, measured as much as 45 feet high by 60 feet long. Failure of the rib was attributed to progressive failure of a thick claystone unit present near the slope bottom area. Saturation of the claystone by water inflow, high insitu horizontal stress, and pre-existing rock joints were considered contributing factors. Immediately after rib failure, mine production was temporarily rerouted to a parallel belt. Two bulkheads were then constructed 175 feet apart along the reclaim belt slope, and a customized fly ash-cement mixture was pumped from the surface into the unstable reclaim slope area. A tunnel was then mined through the backfill along the original reclaim slope contour; the new excavation supported by a system of customized steel sets. To assure stability of the adjacent bunker rib wall, a pattern of 70-foot long cable bolts were installed downward from the adjacent entries to effectively tie back the rib. Drainage holes and a 12-foot high knee wall were installed. Adjacent gas wells were also plugged to help reduce inflow. Periodic inspections and continuous monitoring are being used to help assure bunker stability.

Due to changing geology, rib bolting is an ever-changing problem in ground control. With the economic status of the coal market, the need for safely increasing productivity in rib bolting is at an all-time high. The current solutions used in the market often require a long installation time (e.g. if collapsed holes have to be redrilled) or result in poor quality installations that can lead to insufficient ground control. A new bolting product based on the simple screw principle has been developed to bolt ribs faster and with a more repeatable, higher level of installation quality. The paper covers the product invention and development, the fastening principle and its advantages over current systems and first experiences in the market. The first underground trials have shown that the screw anchors can be installed safely and efficiently, often faster than traditional methods. The screw anchor does not suffer from conventional bolting issues such as collapsed holes due to bad ribs. The screw anchors are designed to obtain steel failure and load testing underground shows consistent fastening in all types of conditions.

"Steel wire mesh is the accepted standard for roof and rib skin control at most coal mines in the United States. Wire mesh is delivered to the mine in bundles that are heavy and awkward to handle. The large size, stiffness, and weight of the wire mesh can present a safety hazard in transporting underground and storing on the roof bolter. Installing wire mesh on the roof and ribs with the roof bolter can be a challenge as well.Synthetic mesh is lighter than wire mesh and can be folded and rolled into a safe, manageable size. A single synthetic mesh roll large enough to cover the roof and ribs in a deep cut can be safely handled by two men. The roof bolter is designed to carry and dispense the roll as it advances and installs primary roof support, resulting in a single pass roof and rib ground control solution. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of the roof bolter synthetic mesh handling system developed by J. H. Fletcher & Co., Huesker, Inc., and Oxbow Mining.INTRODUCTIONRoof and rib skin control in some coal mines has been an issue since mining first began. Roof and rib skin problems vary from mine to mine. The type of roof rock material exposed after mining; the mine atmosphere; and stresses from depth of cover, over mining, and/or undermining are some of the variables that can contribute to roof skin problems from mine to mine.Potential roof and rib skin problems can be time dependent as well. Some mines have roof skin rock, sometimes called draw rock, that falls when drilling the hole for the roof bolt as the initial roof support is installed. Some roof skins are more stable but can fail over time. The failure of roof skin can even be between properly installed roof bolts with roof plates (Figure 1).Mines have most commonly used a wire mesh that comes in individual panels anywhere from 5 ft x 5 ft (1.5 m x 1.5 m) all the way up to 5 ft x 16 ft (1.5 m x 4.9 m) in size. They are typically constructed of 8- or 9-gauge wire welded on a 4 in (102 mm) square pattern. A 5 ft x 16 ft (1.5 m x 4.9 m) panel weighs approximately 35 lbs (16 kg). These steel wire mesh panels can make it a difficult and sometimes dangerous task to deliver them from the surface to the roof bolter and then store on the machine. Manipulating the mesh panels from the storage area on the machine to the final installation position on the roof or rib can also be a daunting task (Figure 2)."

"The Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS) has been developed as an engineering tool for the prediction of subsidence deformation indices through the implementation of an influence function. SDPS provides a reliable and fast method for the prediction of mining-induced displacements, strains, tilt, and so forth at any elevation between the seam and the horizontal or varying surface topography. One of the key aspects in obtaining reliable ground deformation prediction results is the determination of the edge effect offset. The value assigned to the edge effect corresponds to a virtual offsetting of boundary lines delineating the extracted panel to allow for roof cantilevering over the mined out area. The objective of this paper is to describe the methods implemented in updating the edge effect offset code within SDPS. Using known geometric equations, the newly developed code provides a more robust calculation of the offset boundary line of the extracted panel for simplistic, as well as more complex, mining geometries. Assuming that an extracted panel is represented by a closed polyline, the new edge offset algorithm calculates a polyline offset into the extracted panel by the user-defined edge effect offset distance. Surface deformations are then calculated using this adjusted panel geometry. The MATLAB® program was used for development and testing of the new edge effect offset feature. In completing rigorous testing regimes, the new offset features will be integrated into SDPS, further increasing the speed and reliability of the programs resulting in a retrospective increase in capability and flexibility. INTRODUCTION Underground operations have been known to cause mining-induced subsidence inside and outside of the mine permit area (Karmis, Agioutantis, and Andrews, 2008). Additionally, subsidence can impact surface water bodies, such as rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands (Karmis and Agioutantis, 2015; Newman et al., 2016), as well as infrastructure, such as roads, railroads, pipelines, and buildings. With an increase in regulatory focus on mining-induced impacts to local structures, the calculation of mining-induced subsidence indices has become necessary in determining potential damage and mitigation efforts. The accurate prediction and evaluation of mining-induced ground deformations is required to obtain underground mining permits due to potential impacts to nearby structures, as well as hydrogeological sources. The prediction of ground deformation indices is often a complex task due to the number of input parameters required, such as mining geometries, overburden lithology, surface topography, the rate of mining (Karmis, Agioutantis, and Andrews, 2008)."

Cable bolts anchored with traditional two component polyester resin cartridges have successfully supported difficult roof conditions in underground mines. Resin cartridges provide a costeffective cable bolt anchoring system with consistent anchorage performance characteristics when properly installed. The most commonly used cable bolts in the U.S. mining industry are 270 ksi (1,862 MPa), 0.7 and 0.6 inch (18 and 15 mm), seven-strand smooth cable with resin mixing bulbs (also known as bird cages), and 40- and 30-ton nominal capacity, respectively. However, there are other types of cable bolt anchoring systems aside from bird cages. Recently, many questions have been raised regarding the anchorage characteristics of various types of cable bolts. Keystone Mining Services, LLC (KMS), the affiliated engineering company of Jennmar Corporation, conducted a variety of controlled tests developed to closely model actual underground installations. These tests compared the performance of three commonly used cable bolt varieties, including plain, bird caged and indented seven-strand cable. Details of the laboratory testing and comparative analysis of the results are provided.

"Self-drilling rock bolts (SDRBs) that use pumpable cement grout to anchor bolts have been used successfully in the tunnelling and civil engineering industries for many years. Pumpable cement grout offers a considerable advantage in that the SDRB can be fully encapsulated right down to the bearing plate, including filling cracks and cavities in the borehole. However, cement grout cannot provide the immediate rock support required for the coal industry. This paper describes a new SDRB system that uses pumpable resin to anchor the SDRB in a borehole, which not only provides all the advantages of a pumpable grout anchoring system, but also provides immediate roof and rib support as required in the coal industry. This paper further outlines the latest developments in SDRB technology including (1) extendable self-drilling rock bolts, which can almost double in length during the installation process and are particularly suited to low seam heights and rib support and (2) pre-tensioned SDRBs, where a pre-tensioned load can be applied during the installation process. These new SDRB systems offer both considerable advantages in rock support and improvements in mining productivity.INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is continually striving to develop more efficient methods to support the roof and walls of roadways and tunnels, and rock bolting has proven to be one of the most significant improvements in ground support over the last 50 years. Rock bolting is now almost universally used in the underground mining industry worldwide, and there are many different rock bolts available.Rock bolts are traditionally made from steel or fiberglass and are anchored into a borehole with a friction-anchoring device, such as an expansion shell mechanism; cement grout; or chemical resin. Friction-anchored bolts are widely used in the Australian metal mining industry, predominantly as short-term support. They are used in conjunction with resin-anchored bolts where there is a requirement for longer life. Resin-anchored bolts are used in the coal mining industry.Friction-anchored bolts provide immediate rock support, but their load transfer capacity is poor compared to resin or cement anchored bolts. In addition, friction-anchored bolts are more susceptible to corrosion than resin or cement anchored bolts."

"As the leading US supplier of roof control drills, J. H. Fletcher and Company® has encountered an extensive set of roof strata challenges and has overcome various drilling issues by varying machine parameters and working with customers and tool manufacturers to develop solutions. Every mine wants to drill and install roof bolts as fast as possible with maximum safety at the lowest possible installation cost for their conditions. In most circumstances, the intuitive method of higher speeds and pressures can actually have a detrimental effect on the roof drill safety and performance.This paper will outline recent tests carried out at several different coal mines in the Eastern United States. The tests focused on optimizing the drilling parameters of feed pressure, feed rate, rotation speed, and drill torque.The drill feed, rotation speed, and rotation torque, as well as the type of bit selected, have a definite impact on the performance of the roof drill including drilling speed, safety, and tool life. The drilling process can be improved while also improving operator safety and reducing bolt installation costs by maintaining the appropriate roof drill settings for the specific strata conditions.The advantages of improving the drilling process includes increased bit life, increased drill steel life, reduced hanging drill steels, reduced clogging of the vacuum system, decreased whipping drill steel potential, reduced noise generation, and increased cutting size which reduces fine dust generation and dust collection system servicing.INTRODUCTIONIn recent times, the economic pressures that coal producers are facing have created an increased emphasis on controlling operating costs. Several coal operators have pointed out their dissatisfaction with low bit life, and there is a renewed interest in improving tool life and machine performance as part of an overall cost control strategy. Operators are looking for ways to reduce tooling cost, maintenance costs, and drill downtime without decreasing drill performance. This renewed interest in reducing operating costs, along with the ongoing desire to improve safety, created a perfect environment to take a fresh look at the existing fleet of machines to see what could be accomplished. The goal was to take a practical approach to reviewing machine parameters to determine what changes could be made. The emphasis was on changes that would be feasible to roll out to an entire fleet of machines in a short period of time with minimal capital expenditure. The thought process was that significant improvements could be made by simply tuning up the machine parameters to provide a more efficient and safer bolting process."

The paper shows results from the physical modelling of longwall excavations concentrating on the fracture pattern development above longwall panels. The modelling technique is briefly described and the detailed analysis of the fracture pattern is discussed. The physical modelling is particularly useful in visualising the caving process above longwall panels. This advantage has been exploited using the image analysis technique. Black and white pictures have been taken while the models are tested in successive stages and then enhanced and stored as binary images by scanning using an image analyser coupled with a video camera. These images are then processed using a custom C program which allows the discretization and characterisation of the fractures. This provides a valuable data base for further numerical and statistical analysis which subsequently may allow the assessment of the water inflow hazard to the workings. In this paper a sequence of different extraction thickness have been analysed using the technique mentioned above to show the effect of the extraction thickness on the fracture distribution and intensity.

Between 45,000 and 50,000 claims for subsidence are submitted each year to the German hard coal industry. In order to improve the service to claimants a quality management was established in 2005. This paper describes the process now used for handling these claims. A quality check has also been carried out by way of a customer survey, which was performed by an independent research agency. The results of the survey are presented in this paper. In Germany, research into mining subsidence mainly involves the prediction of ground movements caused by deep mining operations. Special areas of research are subsidence reducing aspects of the extraction panel planning, especially from the point of view of mining dynamics, as well as securing and restoration measures. This work seeks to prevent or minimize mining-induced damages close to the surface, for instance, buildings or infrastructure installations (such as pipelines), or underground mine openings (e.g. shafts). Roof collapses and surface fractures caused by shallow mine workings of an earlier era currently constitute a special area of investigation.

The WESTFALIA group of companies developer and manufactures underground mining machinery for complete high-performance longwalls. WESTFALIA uses a state of the art electrohydraulic system as the most important component for the realisation of today's fully automated plow or shearer longwall. The shield control unit (SCU) allows maximum custom designed software flexiblity as well as maximum hardware reliability. The master control unit (MCU) monitors shield support data as well as the plow/shearer position. By using an industry standard PC in an explosion-proof box with an intransically safe keyboard nearly unlimited software capabilities can be obtained with inexpensive hardware. Among various other modes of operation this MCU allows the monitoring and recording of data which can be transmitted to a surface computer. Production and operational adjustments can be made by the mine management based on the MCU information. Statistical analysis of the distribution of roof pressure under various conditions is also possible. The WESTFALIA automation system PM-4 gives the operator maximum flexibility and helps the mine management to run their longwall more efficiently and safely.

This paper presents the physical modelling results of subsurface fracture development associated with longwall mining operations and an application of image processing techniques to interpretion of the results. Physical modelling results have been obtained by employing a large sand and plaster model loaded purely by gravity as a means of fracturing the subsurface strata above the longwall excavation. The results have shown fracture development and crack propagation as a longwall face advances and demonstrated that the strength of stratified rocks, the presence and position of a weak band-, and the extraction thickness, have significant effects upon the overall fracture patterns above the excavation. Binary images of fracture patterns were scanned from the black and white photographs of the tested models using an image analyser coupled to a video camera. These images were manipulated by a custom written C program which allows the images to be processed in both vertical and horizontal direction. The images were filtered to quantitatively differentiate between vertical and horizontal fracture intensities. The vertical fracture intensity is particularly important as vertical fractures are considered to provide the main avenues for surface and subsurface water inflow into the excavation. The use of the image analysis techniques has shown a promising improvement in image enhancement and in model results interpretation in a quantitative manner. The numerical nature of the image analysis results will allow further statistical comparison with other modelling techniques to be undertaken and significantly increase the scope for use of the modelling technique results.

The United States Coal Mining Indus- try had the opportunity to greatly improve their roof control techniques during the nineteen seventies by the use of fully grouted resin roof bolts. This new tool was first approved for underground coal mines by M.S.H.A. ten years ago and during the next decade has been perfected to meet many problems previously thought to be unsolveable. The initial approved cartridge was very similar to the ones used in Europe in the nineteen sixties and since then has undergone a great deal of modification for our mines. These refinements in cartridge construction have been obtained by the close cooperation of resin manufacturers with mining personnel in perfecting pro- ducts customized to particular needs. This type of continuing program naturally necessitates a responsibility upon the resin anchor manufacturer to maintain a competant technical department. These roof control technicians by constant exposure to many of the most demanding underground problems, have developed through the years into leaders in successful applications. Today, Celtite has over twenty technically trained underground technicians with an accumulation of over one hundred years experience in resin anchors. Our documented technical reports are in excess of five thousand, involving over six hundred mines representing every major coal mining area in most mineable seams. This department has been the implement used to work with our research and development people in perfecting a continual line of improved resin anchors. This program has been a significant factor in leading the resin anchor industry into a position where approximately one third of the 1980 under- ground coal production used the fully grouted system. However, as gratifying as this accomplishment is, our experience has lead us to believe that there is an additional demand for a roof control system capable of combining the mechanical bolts ability to apply tension with resins proven superiority in anchoring. A significant number mines visited during the last decade had problems that we believed could be better answered by applying tension rather than the fully grouted approach. In most in- stances, their current mechanical installations were doing an adequate job until anchor slippage occured. Fully grouted systems solved this bleed-off problem. However, an acceptable number of falls still occured. In these some- what unique areas which we believe may amount to as much as fifteen percent of the total bolt installations, the need for improved anchors was a necessity. In developing this program we listed the ultimate requirements necessary for both the bolt and the anchor. These are for the bolt: A. Have one end manufactured so it can be grouted to the mine roof with polyester resin, obtaining a variable length from 12" to 36". B. Have a mechanism which allows the operator to tension the roof from zero to 10,000 psi. This mechanism should indicate if the roof is in compression and the bolt in tension. C. Have a mechanism which allows the operator to thoroughly mix the resin. D. The head of the bolt should not extend below the roof line any more than a normal mechanical bolt. E. Not require any extra tools for installation. F. Be bendable for use in low seam coal. G. Be durable and inexpensive. The ultimate point anchor resin should have the following characteristics: A. Have a mix and gel cycle which would compete with a mechanical bolt for speed of installation. B. Have a pull out strength in excess of a normal 5/8" mechanical bolt.
