The major problem with the Nd-Fe-B magnet is its low operating temperature, i.e., the coercivity decreases so rapidly with increasing temperature that the practical maximum operating temperature-is only 100 °C. Meanwhile, it has been reported that nitrogen addition can drastically increase the Curie temperature of both R2Fe17 and RTiFe11 (R = rare earths). A reasonable question is, then, can one see a similar effect in Nd-Fe-B system? Experiments have been conducted to examine how magnetic properties of Nd-Fe-B magnet are affected by the nitrogen addition. Our results show that part of Nd2Fe14B maintains its original crystal structure and no substantial change in To, due to such N2 treatment is found. However, part of the sample decomposes into a-Fe and, possibly, Nd nitride as a result of nitrogen treatment.

"The phase equilibrium and characterization studies by using high temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) methods have been performed for binary organic thermal energy storage materials. The organic thermal energy storage materials undergo a solid-solid state phase transition before melting which stores large amounts of thermal energy. Two materials [tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane(TRIS) and 2-Amino-2-methyl-l, 3- propanediol(AMPL)] were used for this study. Binary samples of AMPL-TRIS were prepared to perform high temperature XRD characterization and DSC studies and the binary AMPL-TRIS phase diagram was developed. The high temperature solid-state phases of AMPL and TRIS were characterized as a disordered BCC structure. It was found there is virtually no solubility of TRIS in AMPL or vice versa below -75 °C. The maximum solubility of TRIS in AMPL is 11% TRIS at 75 °C. The eutectoid transformation was shown at 19%TRIS-81%AMPL composition and at a temperature of 75°C. Lattice expansion calculations on single phase of TRIS and AMPL have been performed.IntroductionThermal energy storage materials can store a large amount of heat due to the presence of thermal transitions from the orientationally ordered to disordered phases occurring before melting. These molecules (such as amine and alcohol derivatives of neopentane) can reorient as a whole about the central carbon atom to form orientationally disordered crystals (ODIC) and their spherical shape makes them reorient relatively easier. Thermal energy storage materials are becoming increasingly important as a renewable energy resource. These molecules undergo large changes in enthalpies at solid-solid transitions. The presence of these compounds with large enthalpy changes are identified as potential thermal energy materials and some of die applications are solar cell systems [1-3]. Binary mixtures have been found as a way to adjust the transition properties in addition to pure compounds [4]. Tris(hydroxyrnethyl)aminomethane (TRIS, C(CH2OH)3NH2) and AMPL, CH3C(CH2OH)2NH2) are two important thermal energy storage materials."

The effects of microwave roasting on separation of rhenium (Re) and molybdenum (Mo) from a molybdenite concentrate have been investigated based on evaluation of the heating characteristics of the concentrate in the microwave field. The results show that a variety of operating variables, namely microwave power, sample weight, sample geometry, roasting temperature, roasting time and atmosphere significantly impact on the volatilization rates of Re and Mo. The optimum conditions for Re-Mo separation are microwave power 1300 W, sample weight 20 g, sample geometry pellets, temperature 600 oC, time 1.5 h, and atmosphere 20%O2. Under these experimental conditions, the volatilization rate of Re reaches 88.12%, while that of Mo is just 5.15%. Microwave-assisted roasting provides an alternative route to separating Re and Mo from molybdenite concentrate.

"In the traditional method for refining of indium, glycerin-KI and glycerin-NH4Cl are used as electrolytes to remove Cd and Tl by electrolytic refining, which produces In with a purity of 99.995%. Large quantities of polluted industrial waste water are the result. It is calculated that the saturated vapor pressure of Cd and Tl are between 1-200 Pa, which is much larger than the vapor pressure of In. Thus, the study of removing Cd and Tl was carried out over the temperature range between 700-950 °C and pressures between 1-15 Pa. After vacuum distillation the contents of Cd and Tl in crude indium could sharply fall below 1 ppm..IntroductionIndium is a is a pale blue and silver white metal, and has high ductility [1-2]. Pure indium is generally used as a raw material to produce semiconductor compounds, fluorescent material and ITO targets [3]. Sublimation, zone melting and electrolytic refining are major methods to produce pure indium from crude indium. Electrolytic refining is the main method to product pure indium at present. High productive efficiency, simplicity of operation and short cycle of production are major advantages. However, glycerin-KI and glycerin-NH4Cl are used to remove Cd and Tl in electrolysis method. Large quantities of polluted industrial waste water are the result[4]."

Impurities are removed from crude phosphoric acid (57.75% P2O5) with a mixture of low and high molecular weight alcohols, one of which is hydrophilic and the other is hydrophobic i.e. methanol and hexanol. In a single stage, the phosphate values segregate to the high molecular weight alcohol fraction and the impurities segregate to the low molecular weight alcohol fraction. The optimum ratio for the extraction is found to be 0.5 part methanol, one part impure acid and four parts hexanol where an extraction percent of more than 95% is achieved. Re-extraction of the phosphate value from the solvent is obtained by 6% phosphoric acid and the different factors affecting the re-extraction process have been studied. Finally, the purified acid is concentrated under reduced pressure and passed through activated carbon column, whereas the alcohols are re-circulated. The produced phosphoric acid was found to be in good match with the international specifications of food grade quality acid. A technological flow sheet is elucidated.

Waste acids containing phosphoric, acetic, nitric and hydrofluoric acid were produced during the etching process of liquid crystal display and semiconductor manufacture. In recent years, the attention on the treatment of industrial waste acids has been increased considerably according to the reinforcement of the environmental regulations as well as the implementation of the economic considerations about the waste acids. Fundamental studies on the separation and regeneration of the mixed waste acids were conducted using Cyanex 923, Tri-octyle phosphate and 2-Ethylhexyl alcohol as an extractant by solvent extraction. It is considered that the extraction of liquid crystal display waste acids with Cyanex 923 and Tri-octyle phosphate, semiconductor waste acids with 2-Ethylhexylalcohol is applicable for the separation and recovery of acid. Finally, the acceptable recycling process from the multi-component waste etching acids was proposed.

EU legislation imposes ambitious recycling targets for various consumer goods. End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs), scrap iron and various proportions of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) are processed by shredding plants which recover most of the metals but produce Shredder Residues (SR) which are landfilled. They represent 20 to 25 wt.% of the shredder input. Energy issues for the coarse fraction of SR are now largely studied. However, below 2 mm, the calorific value falls off drastically. These Fine Shredder Residues (FSR) represent up to 55 wt.% of the total SR. To meet European objectives other alternatives to landfilling must be considered for the FSR. The present paper describes a study carried out to characterise the FSR and investigates ways to process them and produce marketable products. Applying Gy's theory, a sampling procedure was conducted over two years to statistically quantify the variability of the physical and chemical properties of FSR produced by a Belgian post-shredding treatment plant. Macroscopic characterisation has led to the identification of four material categories which could be separated according to their physical properties: ferrous metals (more or less oxidised), non-ferrous metals, an organic fraction (plastics, rubber, textiles, foams, wood) and a minerals fraction (glass, ceramic, concrete). The entrainment of small metallic particles within the pores of organic fragments will affect the quality of the separations.

Bacterial leaching tests have been carried out on Portugese pyritic ores containing zinc, copper, lead and silver as valuable elements. Both indigenous and isolated strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were used. During the tests the factors pH, Eh and dissolved oxygen were measured and related to the leaching activity of the bacteria. Different means to estimate or determine the real bacteria concentration were examined. The influence of nutrient media and particle size has been evaluated. The role of galvanic couples was studied by electrical linking of mineralogical samples of pyrite, sphalerite and chalcopyrite. Leach residues were examined by optical microscopy to follow the mineralogical alterations during the leaching. The results show a rather good leaching of the sphalerite. However, the dissolution of copper from chalcopyrite is much more difficult, 50 % recovery never being obtained.

"Cokes play an important role of spacer in blast furnace. However, they degenerate during Boudouard reaction. Blast furnace cokes are reacted with pure C02 at I 072 to 1673 K. Reaction rate was obtained by the weight change of spherical specimen. The specimen after reaction was examined by microscopic observation. The reaction rate increased with temperature and was expressed by two Arrhenius type lines. The activation energy was 126 KJ/mol at higher temperature than 13 73 K and 202 KJ/mol at lower temperature range. At the higher temperature range, the reaction proceeded from the surface leaving unreacted core, whereas homogeneously whole inside at lower temperature. The porosity increased from the center to surface at higher temperature, whereas it was almost constant at lower temperature.IntroductionThe cokes have the function of fuel, reductant and spacer to keep gas and liquid flow in the blast furnace. Thus, the reaction mechanism of coke with several gas and the strength after the reaction should be important factor to control the blast furnace operation. The reaction mechanism of coke with C02 has been studied extensively. The rate equations were derived by Gadsby[ I], Ergun[2] and Turkdogan and Vinters[3]. They were compared and discussed by Kobayashi and Omori [ 4]. Effect of crystallization degree on the reaction rate was examined by Kashiwaya and Ishii[5]. Catalytic enhancement effect of ash componets have been clarified by Kashiwaya et. al. [6]. Although degradation of coke in blast furnace has been examined recently[7], however, the degradation of coke after the reaction with C02 has not been well clarified yet. In the present work, the metallurgical coke specimen was heated in N2 and C02 and the reaction mechanism and degradation behavior after the reaction was investigated."

"2-substituted benzimidazole-zinc and 2-substituted benzimidazole-copper complexes were main components of organic solderability preservative (OSP) in PCB producing process and affect the thermal stability of OSP film. So these four complexes were prepared by 2-substitutedbenzimidazole reacting with zinc ion and copper ion, the complexes crystals were determined by IR, its thermal stabilities were studied by TG method. The results indicated that the thermal stability of 2-substituted benzimidazole-zinc is higher than the 2-substituted benzimidazole copper,and the thermal decomposition mechanism was presentedIntroductionImidazole compounds which is an important heterocyclic compound shows the important value and outstanding prospects[I-3l in field of biological engineering, medicine, and high-performance composites. It's said that imidazole compounds is an excellent new metal surface treatment[4] agent, because it has good reaction activity with metals and can form a chemical layer on the metal surface. The complexes of imidazole were main components of organic solderability preservative (OSP) in PCB producing process and affect the thermal stability of OSP film. The mechanism of imodazole combined with metal and film deposited has been reported, but the opinions about thermal stability of film have bifurcation, let alone the thermal decomposition mechanism of film at high temperature. The complexes were prepared by combining of 2- substituted-benzimidazole with zinc and copper iron, which were studied by IR and TG method, in order to get thermal stability of different complexes."

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical, morphological and thermal properties of biodegradable composites based on aliphatic-aromatic copolyester/polylatic acid blends (PBAT/PLA blends) reinforced by açaí seed fibers, an abundant byproduct of the açaí fruit agro industry. The biodegradable polymeric composites were prepared by melting extrusion process using a twin-screw extruder machine. The fibers removed from the açaí seed were used as the reinforcement and PBAT/PLA blends as the matrix. The influence of the açaí seed fibers addition on properties of composites was investigated by tensile and impact tests, SEM, DSC, and XRD analysis. Correlation between properties was discussed. In addition, açaí seed fibers characterization by SEM, XRD and WDXRF have also been carried out. The addition of açaí seed fibers on biodegradable PBAT/PLA blends showed that it is possible to get interesting property gains in biodegradable polymer by using waste from renewable sources.

As a series of fundamental study on the gas evaporation method, a levitation-melted aluminum was evaporated in the gas mixture of argon and ammonia to synthesize ultrafine particles of aluminum nitride. When the ammonia partial pressure were more than 2kPa, the formation ratio of aluminum nitride was about 95%. The particles of aluminum nitride were mainly hexagonal. The mean size of the particles of aluminum nitride was about 57 nm, and it was constant without depending on the temperature of the levitated aluminum and the partial pressure pf ammonia. The aluminum nitride was formed by the reaction between ammonia and condensed liquid aluminum particle whose size was relatively small.

Recovery of dissolved copper from discard slags is a critical consideration affecting the economics of copper smelting. Slag cleaning is frequently carried out in electric furnaces, however reduction by injection of natural gas in a holding furnace may offer a lower cost alternative in some circumstances. As the residence time of the injected gas is short, the factors controlling the rate of reduction need to be clarified in order to optimise the design of the slag cleaning furnace. A series of medium scale (200 kg) reduction tests to investigate the rate of reduction of copper-containing slags by injection of natural gas-nitrogen mixtures between 1150-1250C was carried out by CSIRO Minerals. The composition of the gas in the top-space of the reactor was found to be significantly more reducing than the slag, indicating that thermodynamic equilibrium was not established between the slag and the gas in the bubble plume. An apparent first order rate law was observed between the rate of oxygen elimination from the bath and the magnetite concentration of the bath. The dissolved copper concentration was closely correlated with the oxygen potential of the slag, suggesting a partial equilibrium between the dissolved components of the slag. The utilisation efficiency of the natural gas decreased as the natural gas flow rate was increased. The results of the tests tend to indicate that the rate is controlled by a mixed reaction kinetics/ mass transport mechanism. The work was supported by Xstrata Copper ? Mt Isa Mines.
