"The Copper Isasmelt process has been developed over the past 15 years by Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The first two commercial plants were commissioned in mid 1992.The results of four heat balances on the Mount Isa plant are presented. At a smelting rate of 98 t/hr of chalcopyrite concentrate plus 14 t/hr reverts, the total heat generated was -91MW. Approximately 39% of this energy came from coal, while 50% of the energy reported to the process waste gas. To a first approximation the furnace is near chemical equilibrium.The impurity distribution in the Mount Isa plant was presented. Approximately 91 % As, 85% Cd, 75% Bi, 68% Zn, 60% Sb and Tl, 45% Pb and 30% Te in concentrate was eliminated from the matte.The ""bubble"" frequency of the gas cavity below the foot of the lance was measured at -2. 1Hz. Side bands displaced by -l.lHz modulated the bubble frequency. This was consistent with radial gravity wave motion in the slag bath. The two processes, gas bubbling and wave motion appeared to be coupled together; the bubble frequency was twice the slop wave frequency. Extracting perovskite from high titanium-bearing blast furnace (BF) slag is a green and potential method to recover the second titanium resource. The non-isothermal crystallization process of perovskite in synthesized high titanium-bearing slag was studied in situ by confocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM) with cooling rate of 20 K/min. The results showed that perovskite was the primary phase formed during cooling process in the titanium-bearing synthesized slag (TiO2=23%). Perovskite started to precipitate at 1719 K and finally presented an orthogonal straight lines morphology.

Newmont has investigated potential treatment options for low-grade refractory gold ores since 1988. After extensive R&D at Newmont?s laboratories, biooxidation pretreatment followed by ammonium thiosulfate leaching was selected for application to sulfidic preg robbing ores. A heap biooxidation and ammonium thiosulfate leaching demonstration facility was constructed in 1995 to conduct large-scale pilot tests at Newmont?s Carlin Operations. This paper presents Newmont?s experience with the recovery of gold from preg robbing ores using ammonium thiosulfate.

"A practical model based on the Hill analysis has been developed to calculate the Lankford value of interstitial free (IF) steels and its distribution in different rolling directions, by considering only a few selected texture components. The Texture Intensity Ratio (TIR), i.e. (111 ) /(100), was used in the model to describe texture. By using the new TIR parameter, the texture-based prediction models can be used more easily to predict the Lankford value in a rather straightforward way.IntroductionThe deep drawing capacity of sheet steels is generally indicated by the Lankford value, which is mainly determined by the texture in steels1. Traditionally, various models derived from the Taylor model are employed to calculate the Lankford value from the texture2-4. In such models, the plastic deformation of steel is assumed to be the result of the slip of dislocations in certain slip systems, i.e., by either pencil glide or restraint glide. The slip direction is the <111> direction. In the case of pencil glide, the slip is thought to be possible in all crystal planes with the <111> crystal direction. Assuming the material is elongated in the X1-direction by d n and compressed in the X2 and x3-direction by qd n and (l-q)d n, respectively, corresponding to a deformation tensor"

"The rising popularity of microwave heating in mineral processing has fuelled the need for knowledge concerning dielectric properties of minerals. Dielectric property and microwave absorption property of anthracite were measured over a temperature range of 20-100°C at 2.45GHz by using an open-ended coaxial sensor measurement system. The results show that the dielectric constant, loss factor and loss tangent increase with temperature rising at 2.45GHz. Microwave absorption properties of anthracite are highly dependent on temperature and frequency. At frequency of 2.45GHz frequency used in microwave metallurgy, anthracite is suitable for reducing agent to achieve fast elevation of temperature then returning to original state. The research will be helpful in explaining the thermal running of microwave dielectric heating the anthracite.IntroductionThe application of microwave heating in minerals processing and treatment has recently attracted great interest from the metallurgical industry. Compared with conventional heating methods, the advantages of microwave heating include rapid and selective heating, uniform distribution, high efficiency, fast on and off switching as well as flexible and modular design[l-3]. As a result of these advantages, microwave heating has been applied in a variety of mineral processing and extractive metallurgy, such as microwave-assisted ore grinding, microwave heating for carbothermic reduction and acid leaching of ilmenite ore, microwave drying, microwave-assisted roasting and smelting of sulfide concentrate, microwave-assisted spent carbon regeneration and microwave-assisted waste management [ 4-6]. Though the application of microwave heating in the metallurgical industry is promising, further studies on the interaction between microwave radiation and minerals and its effects are highly desired to develop innovative techniques for minerals processing and ore treatment using microwave heating [7]."

Keywords: Undercooling, Convection, Dendrites, Stainless Steel, Levitation Certain Fe-Cr-Ni stainless steel alloys solidify from an undercooled melt by a two-step process in which the metastable ferrite phase forms first followed by the stable austenite phase. Recent experiments have shown that the lifetime of the metastable phase is strongly influenced by flow within the molten sample. The current research will provide insight to why flow affects the metastable phase. This new understanding will lead to the use of convection to control microstructural evolution in spray-forming of stainless steels. Simulations using a commercial computational fluid dynamics package, FIDAP, yield a range of convective flow velocities that cause mechanical damage to the dendrites which is compared to experimental results. If the convective velocities are great enough that the dendrites bend, then low angle boundaries form at the points of collision. These result in high energy sites that could serve as nuclei for the stable phase.

Univariant diagrams are constructed for the reduction of nickel and cobalt oxide and sulphide minerals. The results from the carbothermic and hydrogen reduction of sulphide minerals are compared. The importance role of lime and calcium sulphate in controlling the emission of sulphurous- gases during reduction reaction is also explained. The mechanism of carbothermic reduction of nickel sulphide is explained by examining the sulphur exchange and reduction reactions. The phase equilibrium relationships that determine the formation of multicomponent liquid are characterised. Also the governing equilibria for inert atmosphere calcination- roasting of nickel and cobalt sulphide minerals are also described for the metallization of nickel and cobalt.

Experimental rheology data are needed to produce design criteria for mass and energy transfer processes. Large throughput plants operate under continuous flow mode. The capital cost is determined by the accuracy of the rheology data used for design. The operating cost is dictated by the energy required to sustain the flowing conditions of various process slurries. Typically, rheology investigations are carried out during the final stages of metallurgical testwork, which is too late to set the design criteria for the pilot plant. This leads to increased testwork cost, and sometimes lowers confidence in the quality of the data produced. In addition, the engineering and feasibility studies are often delayed because of the lack of pertinent rheology data. One of the objectives of this paper is to emphasize the importance of timely planning and execution of the rheology study, which is shown to be a critical component of the overall testwork program. Various applications are discussed, including elaboration of process and equipment design criteria. In this paper, the emphasis is placed on gold and nickel laterite hydrometallurgy applications.

"Methanol, lower hydrocarbons, CO, and HCOOH formation have been by the reduction of CO2 with H2. Un-catalyzed electro-reduction requires a significant overvoltage. An alternate route has been conceptualized. Production of hydrogen from water can be achieved by chemical oxidation of a metal in water followed by oxidation of the hydronium ion by the released electrons to form hydrogen radical. It is hypothesized that circumventing the problem of the formation of hydrogen molecule is essential while having the hydrogen radical to react with CO2 forming methanol, etc. This may be possible by a bimetallic catalyst acting as a galvanic couple, wherein one metal acts as the electron donor for the production of hydrogen radical while the other acts as a catalyst for the reduction of CO2. This may enhance the reaction rates. The current concept circumvents the need for an external electric field unlike the electrochemical process.IntroductionUtilization of carbon dioxide as a raw material, not only as carbon sources but also as useful chemical feedstock is a more holistic approach to reduce air pollution by flue gases (1-3). Several methods have been proposed to maintain the concentration of atmospheric CO2 or to reduce and recycle it. One of these is the chemical fixations using catalysts. The conversion of CO2 to methanol by hydrogenation over copper containing catalysts is one of the most widely studied subjects in this area. The limitation in this reaction is the low conversion of CO2."

"According to characteristics of Tm, Yb and Lu enriched oxides composition and problems in its traditional extraction separation process, the computer simulation of a optimized fuzzy extraction separation process, in which three products with high purity(>99.99%) could be obtained at same time, was carried out. Distributing Curves of every element in both organic and aqueous phases were worked out. Distribution rules of rare earth elements in every stage of the optimized extraction process were studied. The computation results of economical and technical index showed the consumption of the acid and base chemical reagents in the optimized process would be saved more than 30%.IntroductionFor the solvent extraction separation process of rare earths, countercurrent extraction process was widespread in the industrial practice. Normally, rare earth ions were extracted by the saponificated extractant and transferred into the organic phase, where the acidic extractant was saponificated by the base firstly. Then, the loaded rare earth ions were stripped from the organic phase into the aqueous phase by the acid. Therefore, the acid and the base were the main consumptions in the process, and the equilibrium acid of the stripped rare earth solution was one of the main pollution resources. Meanwhile, for the heavy rare earths, such as Tm, Yb and Lu, stripping was more difficult, and the equilibrium acidity of the stripped rare earth solution was higher, so the acid consumption increased greatly."

Chapter 11 determined the combinations of industrial oxygen, oil and blast preheat that will steadily produce 65% Cu matte from pure chalcopyrite concentrate. It showed that the . combinations are described by a flat plane. It also showed that the minimum energy requirement for making 65% Cu matte occurs with maximum oxygen enrichment, zero oil and zero blast preheat. This chapter examines the, effect of matte grade on industrial oxygen, oil and preheat requirements.

The reduction of iron ores by solid carbon, when both are agglomerated together in the form of pellets, has important kinetic advantages. Although several studies have been performed on the subject, some points on the controlling mechanisms need clarification. There is a big scatter in the values of the apparent activation energy reported in the literature, and this may be due to factors like heat transfer, flow of gases in the reduction system, pellet size and composition. This work is concerned with the effect of several parameters on the reaction rate. The parameters studied were temperature (in the range 1173 K to 1423 K), carbon type (coke or charcoal), pellet size, gas flow rate, catalyst action of the produced metallic iron and added sodium carbonate. It has been shown that the values of the apparent activation energy can change according to the reduction conditions employed, and hence any modeling effort will have to take account of these parameters. "This paper investigated the refinement effect of pulse magneto-oscillation (PMO) on the solidification structures of medium carbon steel S45C in metal mould. The induction coil was positioned at the middle of ingot. The results showed that solidification structure of the treated ingots was remarkably modified with a transformation from well-developed dendritic structures to small dendritic structures or globular structures compared to the untreated ingot. The area fraction of modified microstructure regions reached more than 80 percent. A further experimental investigation had been done to understand the influence of refinement effect on the solidification structure under different mould size. Theoretical analysis demonstrated that the mechanism for the refinement of solidification structure was that PMO promoted nucleation near the mould walls and changed the interface temperature gradient and concentration gradient in liquid, eventually leading to a transition from the columnar crystals to the equiaxed crystals.IntroductionIn recent two decades, the electromagnetic processing of materials (EPM) has been widely used in many fields such as ironmaking, steelmaking, and solidification processing [1-6], where EPM can control melt flow, modify melt shape, reduce macro-segregation and refine microstructure. Pulse magneto-oscillation [7-9] (PMO), as a novel technique of EPM, has a remarkable effect on grain refinement and high potentiality to be used in industrial production. Compared with ultrasound refinement technique, PMO can be easily employed to metal solidification processing for long time in no contact with hot metal liquid by using a water-cooled coil. Another important advantage is that PMO needs smaller energy compared to pulsed magnetic field which needs a very high current to obtain a strong magnetic field to get a satisfactory effect. These advantages mentioned above are beneficial for industrial application, which make it potential to be widely used in future. Gong et al. [7] have studied the refinement effect of PMO on pure aluminum and find that PMO can significantly modify the solidification structure of pure aluminum. Li et al. [9] have reported the effect of temperature field on solidification structure under the influence of PMO. On the basis of these works, this paper has studied the effect of PMO on solidification process of medium carbon steel S45C in a metal mould, which can also provide some information for industrial application of this new technique."

The activity of the ?Hydrogen Group? of Padova University, addressed to the study of materials for solid state hydrogen storage, is illustrated. Various Mg-based materials have been considered and are being studied: a) MgH2 and 0.5% mol Nb2O5 mixture ball milled under argon atmosphere; b) Mg-Ni-Fe intermetallic compounds prepared by short time ball milling of ribbons obtained by melt spinning and by long time ball milling of a mixture of MgH2, Ni and Fe powders; c) MgH2 ball milled in argon with Mm-Ni-Al (Mm = La-rich mishmetal) and Zr-Cr-Fe catalyst alloys. All the samples have been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (Rietveld refinement) before and after hydrogen absorption/desorption cycling and tested with a Sievert apparatus as regarding their thermodynamic and kinetic properties.

Mineralogical and image analysis studies have been performed on four volcanogenic base metal ores that contain 0.01 to 4.5 wt% Pb to determine the behaviour of galena during mineral processing. The galena in these ores is fine grained and is poorly liberated in both the primacy and regrind mill discharges. Consequently, low grade Pb concentrates are produced to obtain relatively high Pb recoveries. The Pb concentrates contain many impurities including high amounts of pyrite and sphalerite, and small amount of CU-, As-, Ag-, Bi-, and Se-sulfides. These impurities need to be rejected from the Pb bullion during smelting. The galena commonly contains up to 1 wt% Ag in solid solution with an average of 600 to 1460 ppu for the deposits studied to date. The Ag in galena accounts for up to 65% of the Ag in some ores.

A fundamental study of the sonochemical leaching of chalcopyrite in ferric ion media has been performed to understand and quantify the effects of sonication and other parameters on leaching reactions. The study covers sulfate and chloride media. The main leaching reaction: CuFeS2(s) + 4Fe3+(aq) Cu2+(aq) + 5Fe2+(aq) + 2S(s) (1) was found to be dependent on temperature and initial particle size, but less dependent on ferric ion concentration. Leaching kinetics were not affected by ferrous ion concentration or the amount of chalcopyrite added. Leaching was performed under a variety of sonication and leaching conditions. Reaction stoichiometry was confirmed through detailed wet chemistry analysis and mass balance calculations. The use of ultrasound activation showed a clear improvement in leaching kinetics and amount of copper extracted, sonication having a catalytic-like effect on the leaching reaction. Compared to experiments without sonication, reaction rates were 2-3 times faster at the same temperature, and could be faster by a factor of 20 for the same initial particle size. Regardless of initial particle size, the amount of copper extracted was comparable under sonication, and could be twice that under chemical leaching, implying the avoidance of fine particle grinding. Sonochemical leaching was found to be only temperature dependent, where the best copper extraction was at 75C. Leaching was further enhanced by the use of a grinding aid. The leaching behavior of chalcopyrite particles remained similar with and without ultrasound activation, implying that the known passivation mechanism in the oxidative leaching was not eradicated. Sonication resulted in coarse particle breakage (ultrasonic milling). Sonication did not contribute to particle passivation, as affirmed from different leaching procedures and sonication in aqueous and organic media. Parabolic leaching kinetics were confirmed for leaching experiments.

At present the Codelco´s smelter & refinery business have growing complexities, concentrates with lower copper grades, higher impurities contents, and environmental restrictions which have lead to refocus the Codelco business, not only by considering the isolated developments for each of the Codelco´s Smelt & Ref complexes, but also as an integrated corporative complex scheme which improve the economy of scale, optimize the synergies, and include new technologies for higher productivity and lower operational costs. Accordingly, for the 2008-2012 period, Codelco have prepared a Development Plan integrated to the smelters and refineries business units that improve its single potentialities of and include the advances for the Teniente Converter [1] and Continuous Converting [2] Technologies, and also include the concept of uncoupling the smelting process from the converting process allowing a higher operational flexibility, and a better control of its contaminants. Thus, processing the white metal generated in the Teniente Converter unit of the smelter A into the smelter B has comparative advantages. These changes in the business concept allow an overall increment of the smelting capacity by processing only white metal as a final product through a very marginal investment in this way the total or partial conversion of the white metal into blister copper is eliminated allowing to use the available gas capture-treating capacity, and available acid plants for increase smelting capacity as well.

"The increasing amount of portable devices and their fast obsolescence generates an increasing quantity of discarded batteries. The recycling process of discarded batteries allows the recovery of metals for further use and avoids the contamination of soil and water. Even though there are several researches on the topic, few papers focus on mixed batteries. The purpose of this work is to characterize a mass of collected mixed batteries and study the hydrometallurgical process of recycling. The specific leaching parameters studied were pH, temperature and reduction potential. The specific goal was testing the selectivity of pH for leaching each metal. The results show that the optimal leaching occurs in acid solutions with negative pH at IM of sulfuric acid and at room temperature (25°C).IntroductionThe increasing portability of electronic devices in the past century along with their fast obsolescence produce tons of discarded materials yearly that could be recycled generating new materials for the industry. For example, metals such as cobalt and nickel, that are worth respectively US$ 30.00 and US$ 16.10 per kilogram[l,2] are disposed in urban trash yearly, which means that millions of dollars are thrown away instead of being recovered and reused[3].Besides the obvious fact that the society is throwing money away, most of these metals are toxic for the environment and all mammals, so when badly stored after use they can be found contaminating ground water which will contaminate the entire lifecycle. Some of these metals can cause cancer, serious lung problems and have bioaccumulative properties [4] resulting in lower productions of natural products and maybe death for consumers.So in compliance to new regulations such as the National Solid Residue Politic (PNRS) and the CONAMA-Resolution N°401 from November of 2008[5]- (that follows similar restrictions and regulations as the European directives) all those urban and electronic wastes need to be correctly disposed and treated before being thrown away on local dump sites.In Brazil the national rate of garbage recovery is around 70%, which only 5% is properly recycled, accordingly to the research of the UFSC, also electronic waste grows at 5% per year [6]The present study was motivated by the fact that recycling processes for batteries are not spread through the country and by the fact that most papers do not try to recycle a mixed mass of batteries, but a specific mixture which does not represent the composition of traditional household wastes."

Keywords: AN-KN Phase Transition, Lattice Parameters of AN-KN, X-ray Diffraction The lattice parameters of the low and high temperature phase of KNO3-rich (in NH4NO3) solid solutions have been determined by the X-ray diffraction method. The low temperature single KNO3 phase (KN II) are from 92%-100% KNO3 in NH4NO3 composition range and from room temperature to 393 K showing in X-ray diffraction patterns. The high temperature KNO3 phase (KN I) showed very broad composition range between 20% to 100% KNO3. The lattice parameters of KNO3-rich (KN II and KN I) solid solutions have been calculated at different temperature range. The volumes of orthorhombic KN II phase decrease from 0.3208(3) to 0.3195(3) nm³ at the room temperature as the compositions increase from 95% to 100% KNO3. The lattice constants of the hexagonal KN I phase show that there is no significant change in a-direction when the temperature increases. Details X-ray results and lattice expansion equations during heating will be presented.

Keywords: solvent extraction, precious metals, thiodiglycolamide, rapid separation, hydrochloric acid The solvent extraction of some precious metals (Pd(II), Pt(IV), Rh(III) and Au(III)) and base metals (Fe(III), Cu(II) and Zn(II)) in a hydrochloric acid solution was carried out using N,N&apos;-dimethyl-N,N&apos;-dioctyl-thiodiglycolamide (MOTDA) dissolved in the mixed solution of 80 vol-% dodecane and 20 vol-% 2-ethylhexanol. The extraction percentages of Pd(II) and Au(III) in the 0.01 M MOTDA-1.0 M HCl solution system are 99.6% and 71.8%, respectively. In contrast, the other metal ions are hardly extracted under the studied conditions. The Au(III) and Pd(II) extracted in the organic phase are easily back-extracted with a 1.0 M thiourea/1.0 M HCl solution. A comparison with the conventional extractant for the Pd(II) separation, di-n-hexyl sulfide (DHS), revealed that the extraction rate of Pd(II) with MOTDA is much greater than that with DHS. The extraction percentage reached over 99% in less than a 2 min contact time. However, in the DHS-Pd(II) system, it takes about 240 min to achieve the extraction equilibrium. Furthermore, MOTDA can quantitatively extract Pd(II) up to half the molar amount of MOTDA. Therefore, MOTDA is a promising extractant for Pd(II) from the HCl solution after the removal of Au(III).
