Ammonia - ammonium sulfate solutions were sparged in a glass reactor with a SO2/O2 gas mixture (2% SO2 and 98% O2) to leach copper from pure chalcopyrite and chalcopyrite concentrate. The SO2/O2 mixture produces higher and faster extractions than O2 by itself. The effect of temperature, particle size and free ammonia concentration was investigated. The fastest and highest recoveries were obtained at 80 oC from a chalcopyrite concentrate with a d80equal to 13 m, with about 83 gpl free ammonia, an average pH equal to 8.75 and a stirring speed of 500 rpm. The extraction process was controlled by diffusion through a product layer, according to the shrinking core model, with an activation energy of 41 kJ/mole.

Falconbridge Limited operates a smelter in Sudbury, consisting of fluid bed roasters, acid plant, electric furnaces and Peirce-Smith converters, to treat local concentrate and other custom materials. The products are a low iron, nickel- copper-cobalt matte and sulphuric acid. The paper reports on the experimental work and results obtained in processing a xenotime concentrate. The rare earth resource concentrate has been treated by three different methods namely, hydrothermal leaching, alkali roasting and alkali pugging or baking. The recovery in hydrothermal leaching with caustic soda at 150-160°C has been 89%. En comparison, processes involving alkali roastings with soda ash at 850°C and with caustic soda at 500°C, and alkali pugging or baking with caustic soda at 200°C have given recovery values close to 100%

Recycling technology of spent Mn-Zn system batteries has been worked out and tested in laboratory scale. The proposed technological scheme includes the following basic operations: breakage of batteries, hydro-vibrated treatment of broken up mass, electrolysis by using alkali electrolyte. This method enables extracting of 200-220 kg zinc in powder form, of 300-350 kg manganese concentrate and of 130 kg steel in the form of scrap per tone of broken up batteries.

Ilmenite ore samples obtained from Dankoli in Zamfara, North Western Nigeria has been characterized using Energy Dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) technique, X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and the Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) technique. The major constituents in the ore were quantitatively found to be TiO2 and Fe2O3 in concentrations of about 60wt% and 31wt% respectively. These occur in the forms of magnesian ilmenite (Fe, Mg)(Ti, Fe)O3, pure ilmenite (FeTiO3), and barium copper yttrium oxide (Ba2Cu3YO6.56) minerals. Other constituents/impurities in minor or trace quantities include MnO, Ta2O5, Nb2O5, Wo, SnO2, Hf, Zn, V, Zr, Co, Pb, Br, Al, Rb, Y, Th and U.

Layered LiMn0.5Ni0.3Co0.2O2 was prepared from Mn(NO3)2, Ni(NO3)2, Co(NO3)2 and LiOH by co-precipitation and solid state reaction. XRD, C-V and galvanostatic charge-discharge methods were used to examine the structural and electrochemical characteristics. The LiMn0.5Ni0.3Co0.2O2 delivered a high discharge capacity of 167 mAh/g between 2.5 and 4.3 V with excellent cycling stability.
