In-situ leaching is commonly used to recover uranium from low-grade deposits in sandstone formations. Acceptable recovery rates can only be obtained if the formation retains its permeability during leaching. Field experiences indicate that microbial growth, stimulated by the leaching pro- cess, can cause plugging problems. To investigate this hypothesis, leach solution and solid samples from well casings and submersible pumps were obtained from four in-situ mining sites. Chemical and microbiological analyses were performed. Bacillus species, Micrococcus species, pseudomonads, and xanthomonads were isolated from these samples. A mixed culture of these organisms was inoculated into a uranium core that was being leached in the laboratory. The permeability of this ore sample decreased to one-third its original value after 16 days. The addition of hydrogen peroxide (0.2 g L-1) to the leach solution killed the microbes and restored the permeability to its original value. This suggests that periodic injection of hydrogen peroxide into production wells may reduce microbial plugging in these wells and the immediate surrounding formation.

Anhydrous DyC13 was prepared by dehydration of DyCl3?6H20 in a fluidized bed using both batch- wise and continuous feeding. A gas mixture with varied composition of argon and HCl was used. The productivity was high, reaching values of 0.25 mol H20/m2-st during the reaction step 6- 1 and 0.062 mol H2O/m2.s during the reaction step 1-0. The product was free from hydrolytic compounds, such as DyOCI, if control of inlet gas composition versus temperature was achieved. From the results of various experiments, some relations between HCI-concentration and temperature in order to avoid hydrolysis have been deduced. The fluidization process efficiency decreases drastically after the dehydration has proceeded down to about 10 mol% of remaining water. Therefore, in a final treatment the last traces of water were removed by slowly purging gas through a packed bed. The water content could thereby be reduced to less than 1 mol%.

"In an attempt to raise the copper grade of Printed Circuit board (PCB) by removing other components, carbonization treatment was investigated. The crushed PCB without surface-mounted parts was carbonized under nitrogen atmosphere. After screening, the char was classified by size into oversized pieces, undersized pieces and powder. The copper foil and glass fiber pieces were liberated and collected in undersized fraction. The liberation of copper foil from the oversized pieces was also investigated. The copper foil was liberated easily from glass fiber by stamping treatment. Liberation rate of copper foil was high at high carbonized temperature. The experimental results indicated that 90% of oversized char was liberated and the copper foil recovery from PCB carbonized at 1073K was 110kg/t. The copper recovery from char powder by flotation was also investigated. 15% of the copper grade and 80 % of the copper recovery were obtained, whereas the removal rate of silicon was 55%.IntroductionWaste Electrical and Electronic Equipments (WEEEs) should be recycled because they have many kinds of valuable materials and most WEEEs include Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). In Japan, about 30 km2 per year of Printed Circuit board (PCB) has been produced [1], PCBs are normally separated from WEEEs and picked up by hand and sold to non-ferrous metal market because PCBs include high grade of copper and other precious metal such as gold, silver and palladium [2]. However, PCB also has impurities such as silicon, aluminum and calcium which are slag materials in non-ferrous smelting process, and other harmful elements such as lead, bromine and antimony. Low grade PCBs are sold after removal of invaluable parts or sometimes land filled without any treatment"

Atlantic Copper Metallurgical Complex in Huelva (Spain) was commissioned in 1970 with a capacity of 40,000 tpy of copper from concentrate. In 1975 the old blast furnaces were replaced by the Outokumpu FSF technology. During the last 30 years, through several expansions and technical modifications, the production has increased up to 300,000 tpy of new copper. This paper describes the developments on the control of impurities that have been made to fit new situations, such as a new artificial gypsum plant, a new electrolyte treatment plant or different secondary materials handling management.

The influence of coal desulphurization by fungus was experimentally studied. The present results suggest that fungus can effectively remove inorganic and organic sulfur in coal. The main factors that influence the desulphurization by fungus such as pH value, temperature, coal slurry concentration and coal granularity are studied by orthodox experiment and the optimal experimental conditions are as follows: pH value 6, temperature 45 C, coal slurry concentration 10% and coal granularity 100 m. Under the above conditions, fungus can remove up to 44.96 total sulfur and 54.87 inorganic sulfur within two days and their desulphurization rates will increase along with time. Compared to sulfolobas, desulphurization by fungus is steady and more effective and has the advantage of high speed.

Microstructure and precipitates in hot rolled low carbon steel sheet by CSP were investigated in this paper. It is pointed out the precipitates in low carbon steel sheet by CSP are different with that by traditional hot rolling. The bainites were found in CSP hot rolled steel sheet by TEM testing and these bainites could maintain in the sheets even after batch annealing. The selected area electron diffraction analyzing indicated that there were many CrB2BN and FeB4BN phases precipitated in hot rolled steel sheet and no AlN grains precipitated. The nitrides forming can limit AlN grains precipitating during the batch annealing processing, and this could do harm to the texture pipeline along orientation line forming with formed properties.

MTU is conducting a study to recycle and reuse the aluminum waste generated from various segments of the aluminum smelting industry. This research is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and industry. A portion of this effort is to determine the operating efficiencies of Eddy Current Separation, comparing separating characteristics of white and black dross. The results of this effort will be presented here.

Norddeutsche Affinerie's routes date back to the 18th century. NA was established in 1866 as a joint stock corporation. NA's core business covers the production of copper cathodes from primary and secondary raw materials and the processing of them into wire rod and shapes. Part of the shapes are processed into pre-rolled strip and shaped wires within the Group. With some 3,200 well qualified and highly motivated employees, the NA Group produces some 560,000 tonnes of copper cathodes, 370,000 tonnes of wire rod, 230,000 tonnes of shapes, 130,000 tonnes of pre-rolled strip as well as 70,00 tonnes of strips and shaped wires annually. NA's product range is complemented primarily by precious metals, selenium, sulphuric acid, lead and nickel sulphate. The paper will give an insight into the performance of NA and its business units with regard to production, environmental and health protection and occupational safety.

There have been increasing in melting recycled scraps in copper smelting processes, and thus growing interests in the chlorine behavior. In this study, chloride dissolution in FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2slag (SiO2sat.) at 1523 K has been measured with varying in PCl2 from 1.13x10-8 to 1.30x10-7atm. and the oxygen partial pressures encountered in typical copper smelting furnace, i.e. PO2=10-8 to 10-10 atm. Discussion is made on the chloride capacity of FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2 slag in terms of its characteristics and the dissolved chlorine species. It has been shown that the mostreasonable dissolution reaction and chloride capacity can be expressed by the following reactions, where chlorine dissolves in the form of Cl-; here, aO2-, oxygen ion activity, is shown a function of oxygen partial pressure in the atmosphere. In the present study the utilization of coal ashes that appear at the end of firing process of brick production in cement pastes was examined. Ashes with three different particle sizes of 75 µm, 106 µm and 150 µm were used to replace ordinary Portland cement (PC) as 5 % and 15 % by weight. Seven samples were prepared and physical, mechanical, chemical and microstructural analyses were carried out. The compressive and bending strength values of samples were determined at the ages of 2, 7 and 28 days. It was found that cementitious pastes with finer particle sizes possessed the highest compressive and bending strength values at all curing ages. Both values after 2 and 7 days cure increased with an increase in ash content, no matter what the particle sizes of ashes were. However, strength decreased after 28 days cure as a result of ash addition of 15 %, although it was still above that of the PC.

Stainless steel is increasingly used as a cathode starting sheet. It was shown earlier that even when depositing copper on copper, a substrate-influenced zone appears in the deposit structure, followed by a transition zone and finally by the electrolysis-influenced structure. On copper, the substrate-influenced zone has a thickness of twenty micrometers and on titanium, eventually more than fifty micrometers. Initial nucleation and growth have a considerable influence. In this paper, copper was deposited in a channel cell on four different 304 stainless steel substrates: mechanically polished and anodized, respectively, at 0, +400 and +800 mV/SHE in 1M H2SO4 at 20°C. Copper was deposited under electrowinning conditions after solvent extraction (SX) (40 g/l Cu++, 180 gh/l, H2SO4, 20 or 60°C). The results showed that, although Auger surface analyses of the substrates were only slightly different one from another including the oxide thickness, nucleation and initial stages of growth were very sensitive to the surface treatment of the substrate. Potential step and current step methods gave similar results : progressive nucleation followed by 3D diffusion controlled growth. The highest nucleation frequency was observed on stainless steel anodized at 0 mV/SHE, under various electrolysis conditions. The potential influence of these findings on industrial practice is discussed.
