"The aim of this study is to prepare the apatitic material using colemanite mineral (2CaO.3B2O3.5H2O) which was obtained from Eastern Anatolia, Turkey. For this purpose, colemanite mineral was reacted with different phosphate sources, namely, dipotassiumhydrogen phosphate, ammoniumhydrogen phosphate and ortophosphoric acid at various temperatures and time periods. Experiments were run in batch system. The apatitic material was prepared by a wet method and followed by heat treatment at various temperatures. Structure of the samples was analyzed by XRD, FTIR, XRF and SEM. The particle size analysis was also made for the result product. The experiments showed that reaction temperature, contact time and heating temperature are important parameters to transform the colemanite into apatitic structure. Reaction of colemanite with dipotassiumhydrogen phosphate and ammoniumhydrogen phosphate results in amorphous, non-stoichiometric hydroxyapatite type structure, while acid based phosphate source gives brushite and monetite type product before and after heat treatment, respectively.IntroductionBoron which has properties intermediate between metals and non-metals is a member of semiconductor group of elements. Its atom is very small and has three valence electrons. Boron exists in Earth's crust (from 5 mg/kg in basalts to 100 mg/kg in shale) and in the oceans (4.5 mg/l) [1]. Turkey has 60% of world's boron reserves which is mostly in the form of colemanite (2Ca0.3B203.5H20). Colemanite is the most important calcium containing commercial borate mineral with 5 mol of crystal water [2].Calcium phosphate cements are very useful for bone repair applications because of its chemical structure. They are injectable, easy to shape and can be maintained locally. Because of those reasons calcium phosphate cements are very effective to fill bone defects with an irregular shape [3]. Hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO)6(OHh) is the major component of the bone (70 wt%). However, hydroxyapatite stoichiometry, composition and crystallinity differ in human skeleton system [4, 5].The main objective of the present work was to study the transformation of colemanite to apatitic material using different phosphate solutions at several time spans and temperatures. The experiments were run in a batch system, change in pH and also weight loss were measured after the experiments. Several analysis methods were used to investigate the chemical and structural changes."

"Specularite and vanadium-titanomagnetite are difficult to granulate, and with the increase of their proportions, the permeability of sintering bed is deteriorated together with the combustion velocity of fuel for the shortage of air through the sintering bed, which can lower sintering speed and specific production capacity significantly. The biomass fuel has a higher combustion velocity than coke breeze, therefore the productivity of specularite and vanadium-titanomagnetite ore can be improved remarkably by replacing coke breeze partly with biomass fuel .The results showed that, when the proportion of biomass fuel replacing coke is 40%,the sintering speed and specific production capacity of 35% specularite were improved from 19.06mm/min, 1.33 t/(m2·h)to 21.45mm/min, 1.47 t/(m2·h),and that of 55% vanadium-titanomagnetite were improved from 17.23mm/min, 1.11 t/(m2·h)to 22.80mm/min, 1.44 t/(m2·h). As a conclusion, biomass fuel is effective to strengthen sintering of refractory iron ore.IntroductionThe iron and steel industry of our country has achieved significant development in the recent years. In 2010, the output of steel has reached to 0.627 billion tons. The increasing scale of iron and steel has led to rigorous domestic iron ore environment, and the reserves of hematite and magnetite that have superior sintering characteristics are on the decline with continually exploiting and utilizing [1]. Therefore, the RIO (refractory iron ores) SP (specularite) and VT (vanadium-titanomagnetite) have to be applied vastly. However, the quality of sinters can be deteriorated when utilizing RIO in high proportion due to their poor granulation and metallogenic performances [2, 3]. Generally, the ratio of SP is 3~5%,which should not exceed 10% in our country currently [4]. Though high rate of VT is adopted in PZH steel for a long time, the productivity is obviously low compared with normal sintering [5]."

Over 25 years of US research in Mineral Recovery from Geothermal Solutions have lead to few commercial applications. With the World Bank program in Kamchatka, Russia in September 2005 a step was taken to vitalize and coordinate the many efforts to advance economic mineral recovery systems worldwide. The US Department of Energy is helping to spur on the interest and research needed to realize the many benefits of extracting minerals from geothermal solutions. The excitement of recovery of minerals from geothermal brines has many positive angles. The economics of certain geothermal site is improved if a revenue is arrived from a sellable commodity with the geothermal power. The use of cleaner geothermal brines also improves the capable use of the brine before reinjection. We will review the history of Geothermal in the USA and the opportunities for recovery of different minerals and the markets for them.

"In this work, metal values were prepared from used beverage cans. The cans are made of aluminum and minor alloying metals and printed with a multi-color printing ink. A method has been investigated to remove the printed coating using organic solvents or by sand blasting technique in a rotating drum. Metal values of the cleaned cans are prepared applying combined hydro and pyrometallurgical treatments. Factors affecting the efficiency of the suggested method have been studied.The results show that the extent of removal of the printing coating is successfully performed with recyclable methyl ethyl ketone I dimethyl formarnide mixture. With sand blasting, it proceeds regularly with the inner diameter, the rotation speed of the drum, the size of the sand grains and temperature. The removed coating is stripped with the same solvent. Metal alloy(s) are prepared in two ways. In the first way, the cans are pressed into solid blocks using hydraulic press before melting at temperatures up to 1000°C using borax-sodium chloride salt mixture as a flux. The quality of the metal obtained is a function of the salt and temperature. The slag so formed was leached with mineral acid solutions. In the second way, the used beverage cans are directly dissolved in mineral acids whereby different metal values are selectively precipitated. The undissolved part is fused with sodium carbonate at 800°C and processed in the same manner. Results were explained in the light of the thermodynamic properties of the species involved."

Renewed interest in olivine refractories has led to efforts to characterize them employing modern techniques of experimentation and data analysis. Initial studies have focused on determination of physical and thermophysical properties. Special equipment for the determination of thermal shock resistance and creep behavior have been constructed. Optimal compositions for maximizing various properties are being identified using appropriate statistical techniques. The overall goal is to develop response surfaces for each of a selected group of engineering design and use properties. Development of ?olivine Refractories? in the United States The term "olivine refractories" is used here because it does appear that domestic deposits of this rock will be the focus of renewed interest and "olivinell is the preferred term in this country. There are extensive deposits of high quality olivines extending through parts of Georgia. North Carolina and in the state of Washington. The eastern olivines are much more localized and extensively altered compared to the western materials. The Washington olivines exist as massive rock deposits in the Twin Sisters mountain area northeast of Seattle and their inaccessi-bility has slowed efforts to develop them. The North Carolina olivines have been used in steel plant applications since the 1930's. Geologists use the term "olivine" to describe assemblages of ortho-silicates. 2RO.SiO2, wherein the RO may be MgO. FeO. MnO. etc. When the RO consists essentlally of MgO and FeO. the material is called dunite and. as such, is synonymous with "refractory olivine." Refractory olivines utilizing North Carolina materials were developed for brick products by Birch and Harvey in this country around the mid-1930's. (I) Their work was completely independent of that of V. M. Goldschmidt and co-workers who used massive dunites located in Denmark. (2) These deposits are currently being mined by A/S Olivine of Denmark for the manufacture of a rather complete line of brick shapes for use in steel-plant. glassplant. and cement kiln applications. "Three mol% Yttria-Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia (YSTZ) was prepared by a sol-gel synthesis technique using zirconium tetrachloride and hydrated yttrium chloride precursors. After drying and annealing at 823K, the particle size was in the range 10 to 20 nm. The zirconia powder was sintered using a uniaxial hot press at an applied stress of 20 to 40 MPa. One hour, isothermal sintering was performed in air after initial heating at 50K/min. Theoretical density was obtained at densification temperatures above 1498K. After sintering, grain coarsening characteristics were studied using constant heating rate anneals followed by quenching, based on a model for grain coarsening in a linear heating rate cycle. The microstructural change was studied using SEM and TEM and the phases were determined using x-ray diffraction.IntroductionThe ability to sinter nanocrystalline materials to full density several hundred degrees below the normal sintering temperatures is one reason for their current interest. [1-5] Yttria Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia (YSTZ) of grain size of about 300 nm has exhibited superplasticity, with elongations as large as 800%.[6-7] Fine grain size is critical for superplasticity. Retention of the fine grain size during sintering of nanocrystalline powder is important if a material is to exhibit superplasticity or to exhibit physical or mechanical properties associated with the ultra fine structure. This paper investigates the sintering behavior and the grain coarsening characteristics ofnanocrystalline YSTZ.Techniques for synthesizing nanocrystalline materials have been studied in great detail earlier. [8-12] The techniques used to synthesize nanocrystalline zirconia include alkoxide synthesis [9], the chloride method [11], the peroxide method [13] and the acetone-toluene method. [13] In this paper the method used in the synthesis of zirconia is the chloride technique. With this precipitation technique, either zirconium chloride or oxychloride and a corresponding yttrium salt or even pure yttria are used."

"Catalytic mechanism of CeO2 in combustion of coals was investigated in this paper. Catalytic combustion of four kinds of coals with different metamorphic grades by CeO2 was examined, suggesting that catalytic function of CeO2 increases with increase of metamorphic grade of the coals. One important reason for CeO2 promoting combustion of the coals is that pyrolysis of anthracite is advanced by CeO2, which not only raises the pyrolysis rate and pyrolysis conversion ratio, but increases contents of light components in pyrolysis gas; and both pore space and specific surface area of the pyrolysis char are enlarged by CeO2, which is another reason. In order to realize in situ catalysis for reducing catalyst consumption, it is crucial to increase catalyst particle number and enhance the bonding force between catalyst and coal. In addition, remarkable energy saving effect was observed when a nanometer calcium-based rare earth catalyst obtained by hydro-thermal synthesis was applied to catalytic combustion of coal injection into blast furnace.Introduction Coal combustion is acknowledged as one of the most important coal applications. Since addition of catalysts could reduce the ignition temperature of pulverized coal and accelerate the coal combustion, catalytic combustion is generally accepted as an effective measure to realize fast combustion of coal. Furthermore, different catalysts added may produce different effects on ignition temperature of coal. It is reported activity of catalysts with the same cation follows this order: OH->CO3 2->Cl->SO4 2-; while that of the catalysts which have the same anion follows: Cs+>Rb+>K+>Na+>Ba2+>Li+>Sr2+>Ca2+>Mg2+>Be2+ [1-4] .Due to the special physical and chemical structure, CeO2 plays an important role in the catalysis field. Many literatures point out that CeO2 not only has great catalytic effect on energy conversion, succeeded in catalyzing combustion of gaseous fuels such as CH4, CO, etc. but also can catalyze combustion of some liquid and solid fuels such as JP-10, black carbon, carbon deposit in the automobile exhausts and so on [5-9].Pyrolysis, the first step of combustion, directly influences ignition temperature and combustion rate of coals. So a great variety of catalysts were applied to catalyze pyrolysis of coals. And plenty of studies suggest that the alkali and alkaline-earth metal compounds inherent in the coals show apparent catalytic effect on coal pyrolysis. Meanwhile, addition of alkali and alkaline-earth metals into coal combustion process also indicates obvious catalysis effect, accelerating coal pyrolysis, improving pyrolysis conversion ratio, increasing contents of pyrolysis gases and changing composition of the pyrolysis gases [10-15].Although alkali and alkaline-earth metal compounds have good catalysis effect on coal combustion, their application in the catalysis field was limited because of their erosive attack to the combustion equipments. In contrast, CeO2, as a substitution of the traditional coal catalysts, presents widely potential application due to its good catalysis ability, non-corrosive and nontoxic. However, investigation on CeO2 catalyzing coal combustion is rarely reported. In this work, catalytic mechanism of CeO2 in coal combustion was studied, in an attempt to provide theoretical foundation for developing new catalysis technologies."

An analytical program using a combination of SEM-based image analysis techniques is developed for automated modal analysis of ores containing silicate and other gangue minerals. Previous knowledge, gathered by means of either optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, SEM, or electron microprobe analysis is used to establish discrimination criteria in the image analysis program. The program initially discriminates minerals on the basis of their relative grey values in a backscattered electron image. For those minerals which have overlapping grey levels the minerals are identified by the program using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry with X-ray counting for twelve or more elements. This technique is useful to quantify ores in which the gangue minerals are numerous. Two cases of application are presented.

"To remove aluminum ion from chlorinated rare earth solution, this paper used hydrolysis method to explore the hydrolysis behavior of aluminum ion in aluminum chloride solution and confirm the optimum conditions of aluminum ion hydrolysis, which are pH value, temperature and initial concentration of Al203 and so on. The experimental results show that single treatment can make aluminum precipitation rates of chlorinated rare earth solution reach about 90% by hydrolysis precipitation; and then several recycle disposal can get precipitation rates of 89% for aluminum and 2.86% for rare earth.IntroductionIn China, rare earth resources are very rich and unique minerals, complete variety, and rare earth products are very large in the domestic reserves. Rare-earth and application products have been deep into all areas of our life, permanent magnet material of rare earth is one of the most popular application areas[11. Binary oxides such as praseodymium neodymium have been widely applied in the fields of glass, ceramics, magnetic materials, catalysts and so on. Especially, the advent of the Pr-Nd-Fe-B magnets which makes the world magnetic material into a new stage of development [2•3]With the development of science and technology, for industrial, physical and chemical indicators of raw materials Pr-Nd oxides (such as particle size, specific surface area and non rare earth impurities etc.) are also getting higher and higher. The oxide size has an important influence on sludge formation in the electrolytic process. If the size is too large, added oxides have settled on the bottom of slot before melting, and then generated sludge; if the particle is too small, it can cause dust dispersion, enlarge oxide unit consumption and increase the cost of production in the charging process. Some early processes use oxalic acid to make chloride neodymium praseodymium settle, and impurity can be removed cleanly, but the cost is high, it is not suitable for production. At present, most enterprises are using ammonium hydrogen carbonate to precipitate chlorinated neodymium praseodymium, but chlorinated neodymium praseodymium such as iron and aluminum and so on can easily form gel in the precipitation process, seriously affect the growth of neodymium praseodymium carbonate crystal and often leads to particle meticulous, even may also generate gel-like neodymium praseodymium sediments and cause centrifugal or suction filtration difficult. Now the actions and their removal of impurity such as iron and aluminum have done a lot of research in the production process of rare earth, removing aluminum craft with alkaline (sodium hydroxide) and acid (oxalic acid) has good effect, but the cost is higher[41; used adding complex agent to remove aluminum method which is simple and easy to operate, but aluminum removal rate is not high, and also changed the sediment of crystal type[51, and etc. This paper discusses the removal of chlorine from rare earth solution on the basis of the hydrolysis property differences betweenAJ3+ and rare earth ion."

"Thermodynamic calculation is applied to make an investigation on the equilibrium phase relations and liquids of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-FeOx system for different temperatures. The calculated results with FactSage6.1 show that the effect of temperature on the the equilibrium phase relations and liquidus of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-FeOx system and its sub-systems is appreciable. The liquid phase regions enlarge with increasing temperature from 1573K to 1873K, while the primary phase fields reduce distinctly.IntroductionThe main oxide components of vitrified bottom ash slag are CaO, Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3, MgO, and Na2O, accounting for more than 90% of the bottom ash by weight[1]. During slag processing, the knowledge of thermodynamic properties and liquidus temperature in the related slag systems is highly required [2, 3], which is not yet available. Through literature survey [4-6], it is clear that the systematic information on the concerned complex slag system is scarce. So far the engineers in the field have to make assumptions of the thermodynamic properties of the simplified oxide system, without taking into consideration the interactions of the different oxide components, which hinders the development of the slag valorization and utilization. In order to provide thermodynamic properties for the application of the vitrified bottom ash, the six-component oxide system (CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-FeOx-Na2O) is highly required. A preliminary phase diagram of the CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-FeOx-Na2O system can be obtained from extrapolation of the thermodynamic functions of constituent subsystems such as CaO-SiO2-FeOx-MgO, CaO-SiO2-FeOx-Al2O3, CaO-SiO2-Na2O-MgO and CaO-SiO2-Na2O-Al2O3. In this work, the equilibrium phase relation and liquidus of CaO-SiO2-FeOx-Al2O3 system, one subsystem of the concerned complex slag system, are calculated and the effect of temperature is also discussed."

"The mobilization of contaminants from industrial residues like ashes from municipal solid waste incinerators in case of leaching is investigated world wide. In classical leach tests only soluble species are considered. In addition the geochemical behaviour of residues has to be completed by assessing the mobilization via colloidal particles. This transport is well known from natural aquatic systems. Quantification of aquatic colloids is associated with considerable difficulties, because they are often found in low concentrations and in a size distribution where small particles with diameters below 0.1 µm predominate. In the past years, the Laser-induced Breakdown Detection (LIBD) has been developed as a novel sensitive method for quantifying colloids. Column leaching experiments with directly coupled LIBD were used to quantify the release of heavy metals and colloids out of bottom ashes. Some typical colloid bound heavy metal concentrations in the leachate are in some cases exceeding the limits defined by German authorities. The LIBD with a flow-through cell allowed to assign absolute values to colloid size and concentration."

"Zarafshan/Newmont is a 50/25/25 joint venture between Newmont Gold and the State Committee for Geology and Mineral Resources, and Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinat, two entities of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The Zarafshan/Newmont joint venture consists of a heap leaching operation which will process 220 million metric tonnes of existing low-grade oxide ore stockpiles (averaging 0.036 oz Au/t) from the Muruntau mine. Net recovery over the 17-year life of the project is expected to be 4.8 million ounces of gold.The plant construction started in October 1993 and operations commenced on May 25, 1995. The crushing plant consists of four stages of crushing and screening to produce a 95% passing 3.35 mm product, followed by heap leaching and gold recovery by the Merrill-Crowe process. The dore metal is refined at the Muruntau refinery. All gold produced by the joint venture is sold on the world market. IntroductionThe Muruntau mine and nearby town of Zarafshan are located in the center of the Kyzylkum desert, 250 miles west of Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan. Following a mining conference in Moscow in 1990, a Newmont geologist was among the first team of westerners to visit the Muruntau Mine, the second largest gold producer in the former Soviet Union. At Muruntau, they found 220 million tonnes of low grade gold ore that had been stockpiled during the previous 25 years. In February, 1992, six months after Uzbekistan's independence, Newmont signed a 50/50 joint venture agreement with the Uzbek government to use heap leach technology to process the ore. The feasibility study was completed in November of 1992. Plant construction started in October, 1993 and operations commenced on May 25, 1995.Newmont Metallurgical Services performed metallurgical studies to obtain heap leach process design criteria parameters. The initial metallurgical study on 20 grab samples is the subject of this paper."

"Electrocoagulation is a technique for treating wastewater streams from metallurgical plants whereby electrodes are corroded to generate gases (most notably oxygen at the anode and hydrogen at the cathode) and solid particulates which acts as substrates for coprecipitation of impurities. The performance of electrocoagulation reactors, in terms of their efficiency for removing a particular impurity, is highly dependent on several factors, most notably: the nature of the electrodes, the spacing between electrodes, the current density, the height of the electrodes, the solution flow rate, and application of periodic current reversal. Because these variables have complex interactions, in order to ensure reliable scale-up of laboratory results, experiments should be conducted under conditions that closely match those that would be employed at an industrial scale. To that end, this article describes the design and commissioning of a versatile laboratory scale electrocoagulation reactor that allows for the control of all the aforementioned variables along with the ability to measure the instantaneous spatial distribution of current within the reactor.IntroductionArsenic is often removed from metallurgical waste streams in stirred tank reactors by coprecipitating it with ferric ions as an arsenical ferrihydrite [ 1]. Electrocoagulation is an electrolytic technology that can accomplish the same task, but has not yet been widely adopted to treat metallurgical waste streams [2]. The electrocoagulation process involves the use of an external DC power supply to drive the dissolution of a relatively non-toxic metal into the wastewater stream, usually either iron or aluminum, which then largely precipitates as oxyhydroxide phases that adsorb undesired impurities [l]. At the anode, the metal is dissolved and oxygen is often evolved, lowering the local pH and enhancing metal ion solubility."

The hydrothermal syntheses of zeolites from coal fly ash were carried out using NaOH and KOH as an alkali source. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) and the ion exchange selectivity were investigated for the zeolites synthesized by a hydrothermal treatment. The effective usage of the zeolite as a cation exchanger was considered from the viewpoint of engineering. Zeolite P, HS (hydroxysodalite) and K-CHA (potassium-chabazite) are mainly formed as zeolite species in NaOH or KOH solution at 393K. The zeolite P and K-CHA have a large exchange capacity as a cation exchanger. The cation exchange isotherms of various monovalent and divalent cations with various zeolites are investigated. The order of selectivity of the zeolites is as follows, NH4+> K+> Li+.For the divalent cation, the largest removal amount is obtained for Pb2+ in the low equilibrium concentrations below 0.2mmol/dm3, and almost perfect removal can be achieved for Pd2+. The order of selectivity of zeolites in low concentration is expressed in the following order; Pb2+> Co2+> Cd2+> Ca2+> Mg2+> Ni2+. Ii is considered the zeolites obtained from coal fly ash can be used as an excellent cation exchanger.

This paper gives an overview of the primary copper smelting business during the years of flash Smelting in the light of various projects taking into account the sustainability of copper production. Also the future challenges of copper smelting are addressed with special emphasis on the environment. Flash Smelting connected with either Peirce-Smith converting or Flash Converting offers the most economical and environmentally friendly alternatives for the smelting of normal and lean copper concentrates. For rich copper concentrates the feasibility of Outokumpu Direct Blister Flash smelting is, understandably, beyond compare. When the total investment costs for building a smelter and acid plant are considered, it is clear that Flash Smelting is the more feasible option compared to bath smelting. Reduction of equipment and operating cost is further achieved by the LUREC-process developed by Outokumpu Technology for operating plants with SO2-contents up to 25 % by volume. As an example the Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting Furnace (FCF) has been in operation at Kennecott Utah Copper for 10 years and has achieved excellent results both environmentally and production vice. The FCF treats the entire output of the Kennecott Flash Smelting Furnace and has excess converting capacity. Furnace life, initially projected at two to three years, is now projected to be more than 5 years. It is likely the life will be essentially the same as a well-operated Flash Smelting furnace.

"The principal objective for finishing surfaces is to protect and/or to decorate them. This can be achieved by adding or removing material from the work surface. The addition of aggregated material is called coating or recovering. In this work, mecano-chemical techniques are investigated for surface finishing. For these techniques, barreling or polishing by the friction method will be used. These are the cleaning or finishing processes most used for great volumes of small pieces. These methods improve the surface finishing by eliminating burrs, sharp pointed, tool marks and crusts of casting. They are used to clean metallic pieces, ceramics and polymeric materials. The process is based on rubbing or friction by abrasives. The pieces are arranged in the barrel with an abrasive and an additive (water or chemical additive). The machine produces a rotating movement on the pieces. When the abrasive passes against the surfaces of the pieces, it produces an action of rubbing and impact that cleans the surfaces. The rubbing action is developed when the upper layer of the charge slides to the lower extreme when the barrel rotates. The barrel can be hexagonal or octagonal to facilitate the sliding of the charge. The barrels can be between 15 to 120 cm in length and they can have almost any diameter and velocity of rotation. There are several types of barrel: individual, multiples, and multiple compartments. "Purification of metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si) by the plasma-arc zone melting method (PZM) has been examined. The process consisted in the horizontal displacement of a molten zone heated by Ar- and 10%H2+Ar- plasma-arc under atmospheric pressure. This technique, especially using hydrogen plasma-arc, promoted the segregation of impurities from the head to the tail of the bar and the vaporization of impurities of higher vapor pressures. Metallic impurities such as Fe, Ti, Cr, Mn,. Cu, Al and Ca were reduced to less than 1 mass ppm at the head side of the Si bar. Non-metallic impurities such as boron, phosphorous, carbon and oxygen were also reduced by the zoning effect and, furthermore, by activated hydrogen atoms dissociated in the high temperature plasma-arc according to the following reaction: Q (in liq.Si) + 2H = H20. Plasma-arc zone melting with hydrogen plasma has been recognized to become an effective purification technique of MG-Si for the production of a low cost solar grade Si (SOG-Si).IntroductionDemand of high-purity Si for solar grade silicon (SOG-Si) is supposed to be further growing in the near future. The purity of SOG-Si required for the photovoltaic cell is more than six nines. An expensive semiconductor grade silicon (SEG-Si) with the purity of around eleven nines has been used to satisfy the demand. Development of techniques and processes for the production of a low cost SOG-Si is therefore necessary [l]. Although many purification techniques, such as directional solidification, plasmaarc melting and electron beam melting [1-6], and processes, such as carbothermic reduction of high purity silica [7], have been examined and proposed for this purpose, a more efficient and practical purification technique is still required.In the present work, the purification of MG-Si has been investigated using a plasma-arc zone melting (PZM) technique developed by the authors. Plasma-arc melting, which is well· known as a useful melting method for various metals and alloys, has been recognized to be efficient for refining and degassing several metals if hydrogen is added to the plasma generating gas, resulting in the so-called hydrogen plasma-arc. For example, deoxidation of Fe, Co and Ta [8,9], decarburization of Fe [9] and removal of metallic impurities from Zr, Ta and Fe [10-12] have been reported. This excellent refining effect is considered to be caused by dissociated and activated hydrogen atoms formed in the high temperature plasma-arc."

In the course of carbonization of coal under a rising temperature condition, volatile matter (V.M.) is released. The kind and amount of V.M. released depend on the kind of coal. Components of V.M. are tar, hydrocarbons (CH4, C2H4, C2H6, C3H8), CO, CO2 and H2, which are released in this order as a function of carbonization temperature. When the carbonization of coal under a rising temperature condition is interrupted at a certain temperature, TC, max, semi-coal-char with residual V.M. is obtained. If some optimum interruption-temperature is chosen, small but most suitable amount of V.M., namely H2, is retained. When the semi-coal-char thus obtained is heated again under the same rising temperature conditions but up to more than TC, max (1), the residual V.M. is released from just around TC, max (1). We propose novel iron ore agglomerate bearing such semi-coal-char with some strength. While simple iron ore agglomerate bearing coal char will start the reduction reaction as solid-solid reaction at somewhat higher temperature, the proposed one will start the reduction reaction as gas-solid reaction at somewhat lower temperature but a little higher than TC, max. Samples of semi-coal-char and novel iron ore agglomerate bearing such semi-coal-char have been prepared and evaluated.

Telfer Gold Mine treats both gold/copper oxide and sulfide ores in a remote location in the Great Sandy Desert, Western Australia. Currently, the oxide gold ore is treated in a conventional CIL circuit by blending the low and high grade copper ores to minimise cyanide consumption and allow smooth operation. The sulfide ore is treated through a flotation circuit to produce pyrite and copper concentrates. The pyrite concentrate is treated in the CIL. Copper concentrate is stockpiled and sold to a smelter for further processing. In recent times, as the depth of the pit has increased the copper head grade has also increased, to the point where the ore was becoming uneconomical to treat. In addition, it was desirable to reduce the amount of cyanide reporting to the tails dam both from an environmental and economical viewpoint. Newcrest Mining Limited engaged GRD Minproc Limited to evaluated a process to reduce the amount of cyanide entering the tail dam with consideration given to copper recovery. From this investigation, the Sulfidisation, Acidification, Recycle and Thickening (SART) process was selected. A detailed testwork program for SART was undertaken with the objective to design and construct a SART plant at Telfer. This paper outlines how the SART process was chosen and summarises the testwork that led to the design of the SART plant. It also touches on some of the important issues for designing this type of process.

"Single-roll strip casting process is studied using computational fluid dynamics which takes into account fluid flow, heat transfer and solidification. The computational model is based on the conservation Jaws of momentum, energy and continuity. Correlation of strip thickness, solidification zone length, and puddle shape on single-roll strip casting of Al-1 %Mn is explored. Feeding pressure and roll speed are investigated. The results show that the··strip thickness slightly increases with pressure, similarly the length of solidification zone. The variations of strip thickness and solidification zone length with roll speed show a sharp decline for strip thickness and slight decline for the length of solidification zone with increasing roll speed. The constraint and free-jet flow have different feature in term of flow field. Severe turbulence is observed on the free-jet flow.IntroductionThe near-net shape casting of strip metals is a demand nowadays. The demand is particularly stimulated by the challenge to become more competitive through enhanced performance. The improvement in the existing processes and new innovative technologies are introduced by the metal industry to gain better product quality, more efficiency in energy consumption, low throughput, yield and operating costs [1-3].There are many advantages that can be obtained by the direct casting of strip. The most prominence is the elimination of hot rolling. Beside that the high rate of heat extraction associated with strip casting offers the possibility of a finer, Jess segregated cast structure. The microstructure will result in the improvement of mechanical properties compared to conventional material, or alternatively the opportunity of using grades of metal outside the normal range for continuous casting.The concept of single-roll strip casting has been difficult to commercialize, because of the complex interactions between fluid flow, solidification, shrinkage, and stress, which lead to serious quality problems. Besides that, the quality and the thickness of the strip are affected by the thermal properties of the strip, roll cooling conditions, roll geometry, and other process parameters. To understand how these parameters affect the strip formation, some researchers have modeled the process [4]."
