"This paper provides a progress update on three tapblock monitoring technologies that Hatch has been developing with our clients for non-ferrous smelting furnaces.The Tapblock Diagnostic System (TDS) is an advanced on-line monitoring system that uses temperature data along with embedded thermal model results to evaluate the condition of a tapblock over its campaign life. Hatch recently installed a second Tapblock Diagnostic System, some details of which are provided in this paper.The Tap-hole Acoustic Monitoring (TAM) system is installed on water-cooled copper tapblocks and uses the noise from the tapping channel to provide a qualitative indication of wear and deterioration of the tapping channel refractory. In addition, TAM can be used to monitor drilling and lancing performance, and potentially could also be used in the future as a guide for automatic drilling and lancing systems (Sadri et al., 2008).The third technology is the use of fibre optic sensors to measure temperature on the hot face and in the tapping channel of a tapblock. Fibre optic technology allows installation of numerous sensors in key locations where they are very sensitive to tapblock condition and also provide more extensive spatial coverage than is possible with traditional instruments. This paper provides an update on our efforts to address issues with premature failure of the sensor cables due to corrosion, and also converting the vast amount of data from the sensor cable into information that can be used by furnace operators."

An advanced real-time monitoring system, called a "Tapblock Diagnostic System" is under development to help furnace operators manage the operation and maintenance of their tapblocks. The life of a water-cooled tap block in a smelting furnace ranges from several months to several years, depending on the operating conditions. Tapblocks are typically replaced at regular maintenance intervals; a strategy based largely on historical records and not on the actual condition of a particular tapblock. The Tapblock Diagnostic System monitors the tapblock throughout its life and accumulates probable wear events to help the operator assess the residual integrity of the tapblock. Benefits of this system include the ability to provide early warnings of tap block wear to provide improved safety and maintenance planning. Using cooling-water flow together with copper and water temperature measurements, the system performs calculations that compare the present tapblock performance with the expected operating envelope using a multivariate statistical method (Principle Component Analysis). The operating envelope is pre-calculated for a wide range of operating conditions using transient thermal modeling (Computational Fluid Dynamics). A state indicator in the form of a green, yellow and red light is used to inform operators of the tapblock performance and health status.

Matte tapping is one of the most critical operations of a matte smelter. Every smelter has developed particular matte tapping practices and tap-hole repair strategies that are often based on the experience of the smelter personnel. As a result, very little information has been published on these critical topics. This paper aims at providing the information gathered from a survey conducted in the PGM and Ni industries on matte tapping practices and tap-hole maintenance strategies for different PGM-Ni matte smelting operations.

"This article makes evident the shortcomings of the current operation of oxygen pipes as well as the damages they cause and why they cause them. When focusing on the causes and effects of these drawbacks, it was possible to develop a new family of thermal lances that could pierce a taphole with the precision of a drill but with the capacity to complete the whole operation. Although efforts have been made to replace oxygen pipes since they are annoying, dangerous and inefficient, nobody had worked to improve the way the traditional oxygen pipe taps/perforates the furnaces and reactors tapholes. In fact, developments made in drills and robotic arms, have failed to replace the oxygen pipe, which despite their negative side effects have been used for more than a century. Observation and theory were key to radically transform this humble tool into a dependable and efficient support in the operation. A good news that it is worthwhile to share for the benefit of all of us, passionate about the world of pyro metallurgy.INTRODUCTION Normally, reports and papers prepared for conventions, symposia or other technical events related to metallurgy aim to relevant topics in the operational field, probably because in them lay the scale economies every company pursues. We intend to give relevance to a matter normally disregarded in operations, but that unmistakably vital: if the furnace or reactor cannot be bled, the pyrometallurgical process will not be completed. Besides, if the tapping task is difficult or is long delayed, the availability of the furnace will be reduced. Consequently, there will be a waste of energy and workers will be exposed to dangerous levels of radiation as well as to work overload and physical injuries Apart from these basic effects, in tapping operations where oxygen pipes are used, we can see serious damages in the smelting furnace, especially in the taphole components such as refractory bricks, taphole jackets and water cooled plates. This paper intends to show that taking care of the tapping task can significantly upgrade not only to the tapping operation itself, but also the whole plant productivity."

Some aspects of kerosene penetration into tar sand have been investigated. The natural tar sand porosity was measured and used to analyze the performance of the hot water process. Subsequently, pretreatment experiments, using 20 kg tar sand samples (Asphalt Ridge and Whiterocks, Utah), and kerosene as a diluent were carried out at the expected summer temperature (26°C) and the expected winter temperature (-14°C). The natural tar sand porosity accessible by diluent has a crucial impact on the reduction of bitumen viscosity, and influences the penetration time required for successful bitumen separation from tar sand by hot water processing. Thus the tar sand porosity is an important variable which determines appropriate operating conditions. Experimental results indicate that diluent penetration into the Asphalt Ridge tar sand (high porosity) is almost complete after 30 min, whereas for the Whiterocks tar sand (low porosity) the penetration process is much slower, and still not complete after 15 hours regardless of the ambient temperature.

Using powerful database management software, nested-field analysis and microanalysis of narratives have been made of West Virginia accident data, resulting in a new approach for targeting and prioritizing safety interventions by county, mine size, specific mine, job title, type injury, etc. and combinations of these parameters. The analyses have been useful in focusing training and discussion sessions on specific work problems, trends, conditions, and situations for targeted groups of miners. Application of the technique will be presented in this paper, along with comparisons of various mine performance measures.

Demand by precious metals explorationists for cost effective means to target subsurface geologic structures worthy of evaluation by means of drilling has led to the use of the predictor-correlator technique. To locate polarizable targets, the predictor-a localized inhomogeneity in electrical properties-is placed at various locations in the computer-simulated subsurface region, and correlated with the potential distribution observed in the field. The correlation coefficient obtained is assigned to the subsurface location. IP targets are extracted by calculating a second correlation section based on higher-frequency illumination and subtracting it from the first. The locations of correlation difference correspond to the locations of polarizable mineralization.

"AbstractOver the past five years, tax rates in the Canadian mining industry have skyrocketed upward across Canada, as both federal and provincial governments have sought to increase their share of mining revenues.However, the past few years have not only brought high tax rates to the industry, but also a number of important new federal and provincial tax incentives.In large part, these incentives ~ special credits or reduction in tax for carrying out specific exploration, processing or other activities - have helped to moderate the adverse effects of the higher tax rates and have provided inducements for exploration and processing activities which might not otherwise have been undertaken.However, the effectiveness of certain of these incentives can be questioned: our over-all tax structure now consists in large part of punitively high marginal rates with some extraordinarily generous but capricious tax reductions for specific activities and may not be in the best long-term interest of either the industry or the nation.A rational tax structure, with moderate and stable tax rates, together with reasonable incentives confined to activities specifically requiring them, could be a more effective spur to investment than the present tax and incentive jungleIntroductionIN THE YEARS since federal tax reform, the mining industry in Canada has faced a continued escalation in its tax burdens as federal and provincial governments have leapfrogged each other in imposing new and higher taxes on the industry. Introduction The financial statement of the hypothetical Gold Mining Company, which forms the background of this survey, was designed for the Institute with the express abject of having it assessed in respect to Profits by the several taxing bodies representing the Federal and Provincial Governments, which comprise the Dominion of Canada. On the completion of the figures, copies were sent to the several Ministers of Mines, accompanied by a request that they be submitted to their taxing authorities and assessed accordingly. The response, while it was not general, was very favourable, and at all times we were treated with the utmost courtesy and patience, and what has been set forth in the compilation bears the authentication of the various government officials who are immediately concerned with taxation. The data itself constitutes a fairly comprehensive digest of taxation as it directly applies to gold mining profits in Canada. The Hypothetical Balance-Sheet (See Exhibit A) In the balance-sheet schedules 1 and 2 (Exhibit A), income is divided between taxable and non-taxable classifications, and here it should be noted that the division contemplates only the assessment for Dominion income tax. The same applies to the factors of exchange and depletion. Therefore, in making comparisons, it is to be borne in mind that the set-up for assessment to the Provinces, that is, Manitoba and Alberta, will stand as if the gross non-operating income is taxable, with the reservations as shown in the notes below the schedules.

LOCAL yearly taxes levied on bituminous coal lands in Pennsylvania have become a cost of first importance to the coal industry of the State. In Pennsylvania there is no State tax on real estate, but local taxation of real estate furnishes the greater part of the revenue necessary for the small governmental unit, as counties, townships, boroughs, and local school, road, and poor districts. Coal in place in the ground, whether or not title thereto has been severed from ownership of the surface, is assessed as real estate and on its supposed sale or market value. There are eight classes of counties in Pennsylvania, based on population; in populous counties of the first, second and third class, assessments are made by a county board appointed by the county commissioners and are fairly uniform throughout the county. In counties of the fourth to the eighth classes inclusive, property assessments are made by property assessors elected by and for each township within a county. In these counties the board of county commissioners acts as a board of equalization and review to hear appeals. In most counties, therefore, where there is a large unmined reserve of coal, assessments on that coal vary for each township, irrespective of the fact that the coal bed is continuous under many townships.

This paper has been written collaboratively by members of the International Mining VR Group. It is the first of a series of papers. Mining in the 21st century is a high technology industry that strives to reduce risk and improve safety through the use of improved processes and procedures. This risk reduction process is aligned with the innovative use of technologies often developed for other industries. Computer-based visualisation systems and their content are such innovative technologies, in particular the use of virtual environment systems and mixed reality. A primary objective of developing virtual environment systems and the mixed reality content displayed in them for the mining industry is to allow mine workers and operators to practice mine processes and demonstrate competency in tasks that will be encountered in day-to-day mining operations at mine sites. It is anticipated that providing easy access to virtual environment systems will facilitate the avoidance of high-risk situations through improved knowledge, skills, understanding and decision making. Via virtual environment systems mine workers will also be able to practice infrequent or emergency events and maintain preparedness for such events. Day-to-day mining practices can also be evaluated. The rapid pace of technology innovation and the decreasing cost of simulation hardware and software present a plethora of technology to the uninitiated. This can be confusing. In this paper taxonomy is presented that classifies hardware, what it can display and also content that can be included or displayed on the various computer-based visualisation systems. The taxonomy provides insight into where technology can and may be implemented in the future as virtual environments are a dynamic and evolving technology. The taxonomy should also assist in the decision making process when scoping or selecting technology for a particular purpose.

Planning and estimating progress rates and costs for tunnelling is always best done based on experience and historic precedent. Much precedent is available but the use of data monitoring, data mining and other retrieval techniques on modern TBM machines can enable this to be further expanded and refined. Advance rates can be related much more closely to rock types as can associated rock bolt and mesh/ shotcrete requirements. This in turn can lead to a further refinement in best likely combinations of equipment, such as shotcrete jumbos, better selected for the anticipated conditions, rather than the potential advance rates of the machine. Efficient and timely construction of the tunnel will also be linked to times needed for finishing work, such as contact and void grouting and to how this can be initiated while the TBM is still in operation, in order to save overall construction time. Indeed, this in turn may affect the most preferable layout and construction details of the permanent tunnel. Considerable experience has been gained in the use of two large diameter TBM tunnel drives through the Himalayas at the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project in Pakistan. All the above aspects will be discussed in the paper based on the considerable experience and data which came from that operation, including appropriate measures in highly stressed areas potentially subject to rock burst.

"The 17.4 meter (57 ft) diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM), the world’s largest at the time of her launch in 2012, locally referred to as “Bertha,” is stuck. Incapacitated due to mechanical failure approximately 36 meters (120 ft) beneath downtown Seattle, situated precariously between the deteriorating Alaskan Way Viaduct and the failing Seattle Seawall. Accessing Bertha with a vertical shaft provides the best approach to address all facets needed for repairs and will allow the full removal of Bertha’s cutter head and related inner workings. Limited area above the tunnel alignment and the physical restrictions of existing infrastructure, create significant challenges for the design of an otherwise symmetrical shaft, requiring special attention to design and layout. Consequently, the access/recovery shaft design required a combination of 3m, 2.5m, 2.2m, 1.5m and 1m diameter unreinforced drilled secant piles coupled with various ground improvement techniques and dewatering, to fully satisfy the shoring design requirements. This paper will describe the shaft installation procedures, equipment used and pitfalls encountered while undertaking access shaft construction of this magnitude.INTRODUCTIONTunneling on Seattle’s SR99 tunnel project began in July of 2013. After slowly mining through a 4.5 m (14.76 ft) thick fiber-reinforced concrete headwall and the first of three stabilized “safe havens,” Bertha would proceed along the proposed alignment through 122 meters (400 ft) of jet grout improved soil at a rate of slightly over 1.6 m (5.25 ft) per day. Once past the improved area, it was planned that “Bertha” – would be moving at a rate of about 11 m (36 ft) per day. By the end of October 2013, Bertha had mined roughly 131 m, (430 ft) averaging 1.4 m (4.6 ft) per day and had begun mining within native soils. By December 2013, tunneling had reached the 244 m mark and Bertha was averaging 3.6 m (11.8 ft) per day, achieving as much as 12.8 m (42 ft) of progress on given days. Unfortunately, on December 6th, 2013, Bertha began to stumble and all progress quickly came to a halt.It was initially reported that an obstruction had stopped Bertha in her tracks. The preliminary investigation involved installation of 10 deep dewatering wells to reduce the hydrostatic pressure around the TBM, and allow visual inspection of the cutter head from within the TBM, and also to investigate for the presence of obstructions at the face of the cutter head. During this inspection, fragments of steel pipe were discovered entangled in the cutter head. The fragments were apparently from an abandoned 254 mm (10 in.) diameter monitoring well casing, previously installed by WSDOT to monitor ground water conditions for the design and planning of this tunnel project. After the steel was removed from the cutter head and cleared from Bertha’s path, tunneling resumed. It was then discovered that Bertha was only able to generate a slow crawl."

Halfway through a 17,770-ft long stormwater tunnel, an 11-ft diameter TBM encountered a karst void below the Mississippi River in Missouri, resulting in significant inflow. It was decided that the TBM could not safely advance without external intervention. Low-mobility grout was pumped from the surface. A rescue shaft was constructed and a conventional tunnel with spiling support was mined back to the machine. The TBM was removed and a 14-ft diameter TBM equipped with probing drills was relaunched. Probing from the new TBM encountered one additional karst feature but the machine advanced after grouting and successfully completed the tunnel.

Long tunnels with only one access shaft pose many program problems for logistics, combine these with the requirement to drive directly out under the seabed for 10.2 km, and the program issues become even more challenging. The Musaimeer outfall tunnel was one such tunnel and to meet and eventually improve on the planned completion date required a complex and extensive management of all tunnel logistics required to support consistent tunneling for a two-year period. This technical paper will discuss the management issues and solutions implemented to meet the challenges of the Outfall tunnel construction.

The Burnaby Mountain Tunnel was an integral part of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. General Contractor, Kiewit Ledcor TMEP Partnership (KLTP), contracted with McNally Construction to build an underground tunnel between the Burnaby and Westridge Marine terminals under Burnaby Mountain. The pipeline was constructed within a 2.6-kilometre tunnel, eliminating the need to run the pipeline over the mountain and minimizing community impacts. The complexities of this Project led to multiple innovations, including the design of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) capable of excavating through mixed-faced conditions concurrently thus allowing the Project team to complete the tunnel with limited geotechnical information.

"The website www.economicevaluation.com.au, which had its origins at the Project Evaluation Conference 2009, provides a free way for industry professionals to teach themselves economic evaluation. At its core is a set of fast-moving modules and three worked examples.The website recognises that economic evaluation is a discipline with a hierarchy of three levels:decision-makingevaluating the project/businesshands-on modelling.There are a set of modules for each level that describe the concepts and activities in detail. These emphasise that the most important and rewarding work is the evaluation of Level 2. The economic model created in Level 3 is merely a working tool and should not become a sophisticated ‘trophy’ in Excel that only one or two people can comfortably use.Hands-on modelling contains three sets of practices designed to make any model rigorous and intuitive so that it can be easily understood and used by others in the project team. Even if the model develops into a long, detailed and complex workbook, it should remain easy to follow and be intuitive. The website advocates freedom to devise any architecture that best suits the project under study, but promotes rigour through the following practices:four cash streams and graphsthree architectures – concept, prefeasibility and feasibilitysix principles.The modules in the Level 2 evaluation use conversational language to describe in detail the broad range of activities needed to properly understand and characterise a project/business. APPLIED geophysics is the youngest child of that old branch of learning, that has been known from Aristotle's time as physics-the constitution and laws of nature. The mother science, with the help of mathematics, has given birth to many children, who, on becoming of age in the scientific sense, wedded more practical applications which later became known as electrical engineering, physical chemistry and acoustical engineering. Some vigorous sons still retain the family name, among which the most recent to take its place as a division of science is geophysics, which deals with the physics of the earth. Geophysics in its broad sense has many departments-meteorology, oceanography and seismology, to mention only three. Within the past 20 years, however, a special interest has arisen in the application of physical principles to, problems in geology, mining and civil engineering, with the consequent rapid growth of what has now been called "applied geophysics." Applied geophysics in this narrower sense is the application of experi-mental and theoretical physics to determine variations: and discontinuities in underground structures that cannot be ascertained from surface inspec-tion. It seems evident, then, that the physics department is the natural place in a university where the principles and methods involved should be taught and developed, for the physicist will also have had the requisite training in mathematics that the proper understanding of many methods now used will require. A knowledge of the procedure and principles, however, is not sufficient for the successful application of geophysical, methods. One may know the dynamics of flight of golf balls and of impact and yet not play a par game of golf ! The proper selection and use of the right club to suit the circumstances of the lay of the ball and an acquaintance with the possibilities and limitations of the strokes as well as the practical execution of the play is essential to a successful game. So, also, in the application of geophysical methods, it is important for the geophysicist to use the best device under the conditions presented, to know the limitations of the conclusions deduced from his physical measurements and to make the proper interpretation of the results.
