The studies [1-3] have revealed that in case of electrically conducting media the influence of electromagnetic body forces on the liquid can be a rather effective mean of such a control. The current paper investigates some physical conformities governing the behaviour of binary liquid metal systems with a immiscibility region under electromagnetic processing designated to produce ingots with homogeneous structure.The main idea of the proposed method rests upon a concept that the electromagnetic forces in the melt are similar to gravity forces due to buoyancy effects in space and have a selective ability to influence the melt components dependent on their conductivity. In crossed electric E and magnetic B fields (fig.I) each component of the medium is influence by the force density f = jXB, where the current density j is determined by the conductivity a of the component j = -oE. When this force is directed parallel or non-parallel to the gravity vector, the buoyancy of suspended particles can be controlled accordingly.This phenomenon allows one to create a situation in binary system, when the sums of all mass forces (gravity and electromagnetic) affecting every component are equal, and two components are under conditions of equilibrium with respect to each other. These conditions are called quasiweightlessness, which is generated in the melt by the electromagnetic forces."

"This paper presents some results of the investigation of the steady magnetic field influence on hydrodynamics and heat/mass transfer in processes of semiconductor single crystal growth (Si, Ge, InSn). The investigation employed mathematical and physical simulation techniques of relevant processes and full-scale experiments on growth facilities. A number of additional MHD phenomena have been found generated in the melt due to the rearrangement of flow pattern, the formation of specific convective cells, and the origin of MHD boundary and shift layer.IntroductionMagnetohydrodynamic (MHD) means of creating forces by contact-free methods in liquid conducting media have been widely used in the production of volume semiconducting single crystals. The goal of this method is to control convective transfer processes in the melt volume and on the crystallization front [1-3]. This is due to the sufficiently high conductivity of semiconductor melts (s = 104 /106 O1m-1 ) and an obvious relationship between the hydrodynamics in the melt and at interfaces and the conditions of formation of single crystals and their quality [ 1].All types of MHD effects rest upon the generation of volume electromagnetic forces in the melt by various means as well as on the possibility to direct them arbitrary in space and to adjust easily their absolute values. Fig. l presents different means how to implement MHD phenomena during single crystal growth. It should be emphasized that in all the modifications given in Fig. l additional energy introduced into the melt cannot influence directly the crystallization process since it is incomparable to the energy of molecular forces. Both the influence and efficiency of MHD means are determined solely by the change of motion, heat and mass transfer characteristics."

Experiments and numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the properties of quasi-2D turbulence. A new mercury model experiment has been built and tested in a uniform magnetic field up to 6T, (Ha~ 1000), ensuring a better two-dimensional behaviour than earlier versions (Alboussiere et al., 1997), limited to 0.2T. The quality of the experimental results has been improved in order to get wave number spectra (instead of frequency spectra) and higher signal over noise ratio (due to the higher magnetic fields). In parallel, some two-dimensional "direct" numerical simulations were performed using a commercially available code to solve a 2-D motion equation involving a source term to model the Hartmann layer. This term is derived from the condition of closure of the electric current, which allows to transfer the Hartmann effect into the 2D-core flow without simulating the layer itself (Sommeria & Moreau, 1982). No subgrid scale modelling is needed in such a two-dimensional situation where most of the energy is carried by the large scales.

The oil embargo and increasing disillusionment with nu- clear power have put this country's abundant coal reserves in growing demand. Both the government and industry are looking toward increased coal mining, and with this goes an increased interest in new and advanced methods of coal utilization. One advanced coal system stands out among the rest-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Its high efficiency, strong probability of sulfur dioxide control, and limited consumption of cooling water place MHD in a unique position to help the power generation industry. Another point in MHD's favor is the capital costs of operation, which are lower than those of other advanced technologies. However, initial costs are higher and realization of a commercial MHD plant in this country may be more than a decade away.

THE story of Miami really is two stories. First, that of an excellent Porphyry Copper mine, ably managed as a business enterprise, and always among the leaders in technical progress. Concentrating its first ore in 1911, it had by 1925 paid dividends totaling $30,000,000 or $40 per share on stock that had cost the public $5 per share in March, 1908. The ore, containing 2.5 per cent copper at the start, had become progressively leaner but the recovery had tended to improve. Production costs had gone up during the World War and the early post-war period; and had come down again. In all these respects it had followed the norm. If the mine had been abandoned as exhausted and the company had been liquidated late in 1925 (a program that had been given earnest consideration in 1924), Miami would have gone down into history a first-rate mining venture; as an active and progressive participant in the great Porphyry achievement. But Miami was not liquidated in 1925; instead it started to write the record of its second and really amazing story. Near the old mine was a large body of low-grade ore containing, in place, less than 20 lb. of copper to the ton, and without, incident- ally, any considerable sweetening of gold and silver. Any method of underground mining that was cheap enough would certainly entail some dilution, so that ore as sent to the concentrator necessarily would average much less than 20 lb. As a matter of record, the average for 1929 was 16.6 lb., from which 11.726 lb. was recovered as concentrate. As already said, the exhaustion of the older orebody during 1925 was foreseen; but in 1924 the decision was reached to enlarge the concentrator and develop a new mine. ON FEBRUARY 13, 1953 the Miami Copper Company signed a contract with the United States Government, through the Defense Materials Procurement Agency, whereby it under- took, with a base price of 27.359 per lb (subject to escalation based on wage scales and wholesale-price indices), to exploit a new ore body in its mine in Gila County, Arizona. Recoverable ore was estimated at 23,000,000 tons, averaging about 0.677 per cent copper. Moreover, the proportion of oxidized copper, difficult to recover by flotation concentrating, was so high that an average net recovery of only ten pounds per ton (0.5 per cent) was expected. The company proposed to mine the ore by the underground method known as undercut block-caving. Unfortunately the ore body, as has been true of all Miami's ore bodies, lay so deeply buried that no possibility existed of adopting opencut mining as has been done in recent years at Miami's neighbors, Ray and Inspiration. Probably the most distinctive characteristic of Miami's operations has been the extent to which it has developed and improved methods and equipment for underground mining. True, necessity was a potent stimulant, because its available ores since 1926 have been exceptionally low-grade; so, if the enterprise were to survive, it was necessary to keep costs at the minimum. This fact does not detract, however, in any way from the remarkable achievements of Miami engineers in conducting efficient and low-cost underground mining.

ORE production from the property of the Miami Copper Co. began early in 1911. Until 1925 this ore came from the so-called high-grade orebodies, which contained a little over 2 per cent. copper. This ore was mined by the following methods. 1. Top slicing after mining the peaks by square setting, which produced 4,524,347 tons, including ore from square setting. 2. Shrinkage stoping with sublevel caving of the pillars, which produced 2,230,577 tons. 3. Undercut caving with hand tramming, which, produced 15,427,672 tons. Estimating December tonnage, the total ore mined to the end of 1929 will amount to slightly more than 43,000,000 tons. The first method was described by E. G. Deane1 and the second by D. B. Scott,1 and the third, together with a general, description of the mine, by J. H. Hensley, Jr.1 The geology of the district has been worked out by. Dr. F. L. Ransome.2

"The Mic Mac property comprises 994 acres held under mining concession and approximately 2,000 acres held under development licenses in Bousquet township, Abitibi county, western Quebec.Gold was first discovered in this locality by Tom Duval in June, 1936. In February, 1937, Cassels Duval Mines, Limited, was incorporated under Quebec charter to take over the property. In September, 1937, the property was examined by Agaura Explorations, Limited, and an option agreement was signed on October 6th, 1937. In June, 1938, an option for complete ownership was taken on adjoining claims belonging to Norgold Mines, Limited, and in September, 1938, a mining plant was installed and the sinking of a 3-compartment shaft begun. In June, 1939, an option was taken by Mic Mac Explorations, Limited, on seven claims of Mooshla Gold Mines Company, Limited, that adjoined the Norgold block to the east. In December, 1939, a new company, Mic Mac Mines, Limited, was formed, amalgamating the Cassels Duval, Norgold, and Mooshla claims, as well as two claim groups to the west of the mine known as the Vaughan and West Cassels groups."

The mineral mica, which has been known to man since ancient times, has played an impor¬tant role in the development of our modern industry. In the latter part of the 19th century sheet mica began finding use as a dielectric insulating material in the newly developing electrical industry. Later, when modern elec¬tronics began to develop, it became a vital insulating and dielectric material for use in electronic equipment. Both the electrical and electronic industries were greatly dependent on some form of natural mica. The manufacture of electric motors of varying sizes, electronic tubes, and other electronic items was dependent on an adequate supply of sheet mica. During World War II this material was so vital to national defense that special efforts were made to mine it in the United States as well as to obtain it from overseas mica-producing areas. However, advancing technology has successfully begun the progressive development of man-made mica-based and non-mica-based materials that can replace mica for many uses. In addition, developing technology has dictated changes that have made sheet mica unnecessary for some uses. As the demand for sheet mica declined, the demand for scrap and flake mica has continued to increase. In fact, today the domestic production and use of scrap and flake mica far outshadows the necessity for good¬quality sheet mica in this country. Historically the United States has always been dependent on foreign sources of material for good-quality sheet mica and imports practically its entire requirement. In the case of scrap and flake mica, the United States is the dominant world producer and consumer. End Uses Sheet mica (Chowdhury, 1941; Rajgarhia, 1951; Skow, 1962) is available in many com¬mercial forms, but these forms can be broadly classified into manufactured and unmanufac¬tured mica. Manufactured mica consists of mica that has been shaped, punched, or other¬wise processed into some form, suitable for a particular end use. Unmanufactured mica con¬sists of partially hand-trimmed or processed material that has not been prepared for any particular end use. Unmanufactured mica is broken into two commercial classes consisting of sheet mica and scrap and flake mica. These classes of mica differ greatly in their ultimate end uses and marketed forms. Sheet muscovite mica can be classified by color, degree of prep¬aration of the crude material, thickness, size, visual appearance, and electrical quality. In addition, phlogopite mica is also classified by its thermal stability. Scrap and flake mica consist of mine, trimming shop, and factory scrap that occurs as remnants from mining, processing, and manufacturing operations, and small particle size mica that is available from the beneficiation of pegmatites, clays, schists, or other mica-rich host rock. The end uses for sheet mica vary so greatly from those of scrap and flake mica that it is necessary to discuss them separately. Sheet Mica Sheet mica consists of relatively flat sheets of material which have been mined as naturally occurring books or runs of mica. These sheets are hand-trimmed to remove any imperfections and are punched or stamped into specified shapes for industrial use. Sheet mica can be further processed and is described or specified as block, film, or splittings based on thickness. Block mica is not less than 0.007 in. thick with a minimum usable cross-sectional area of 1 sq in. Film mica is split from the better quali¬ties of block mica to specified thickness groups ranging from 0.0012 to 0.004 in. MICA is a mineral that once was a familiar sight as fireproof windows in stove and furnace doors and as lamp chimneys and shades. Since 1878, the beginning of the electrical age, the use of mica for such purposes has gradually declined and its use in electrical equipment and appliances has developed to such an extent that the known sources of supply are scarcely equal to the demand. With the increasing capacity of electric generating units, the size of mica sheets found in nature was inadequate. However, in 1894, a process was developed whereby thin films or splittings cemented with shellac or other binders could be pressed into large sheets. 18 The introduction of radio in the early 1920s created such a heavy demand for the smaller sizes of mica that on March 22, 1938, mica was included among 23 commodities on the list of strategic materials approved by the United States Army and Navy Munitions Board. To be included in this list, the material must be one whereof the domestic supply is not sufficient to meet the demand. COMPOSITION Mica is a complex mineral composed principally of the silicates of potassium, aluminum, and magnesium. Less prevalent species contain, as essential components, lithium, vanadium, and chromium. Iron usually is present either as an essential component or as an impurity. The mica group comprises some nine different species, five of which, muscovite, phlogopite, vermiculite, lepidolite, and biotite, are widely used in industry. Lepidolite and zinnwaldite (lithium micas) and roscoelite (vanadium mica) are sources of lithium and vanadium. Muscovite, "white mica," is potassium mica. Theoretical formulas H2KAl3(SiO4)3. There are two varieties, distinguished as to color, known in industry as ruby and green. In crystals or "books," the colors each range through varying shades of red and green. However, when split into thin films, all micas, except biotite and phlogopite, are colorless and transparent. Muscovite frequently is stained red or black by thin films of iron oxide between the laminae. The staining usually is derived from magnetite, which sometimes is found as unaltered crystals.

Mica is a platy mineral occurring in a variety of complex hydrous aluminosilicate forms with differing chemical composition and physical properties. Principal minerals in the mica group include: Muscovite-potassium mica (colorless or pale green/ ruby) Phlogopite-magnesium mica (dark brown or amber) Biotite-magnesium-iron mica (black or dark green) Lepidolite-lithium mica (lilac) Selected properties are given in Table 1. Muscovite is most important commercially with phlogopite of lesser use. The laminated structure of mica enables it to be split into very thin films which are transparent and tough as well as having outstanding dielectric and insulating properties. Commercially, mica is used in a number of forms (Chowdbury, 1941; Rajgarhia, 1951; Skow, 1962). Sheet mica consists of flat sheets mined from naturally occurring books of mica, free from defects and capable of being punched or stamped into required shapes. Sheet mica is separately classified into blocks, films, or splittings according to thickness. Built-up mica, or micanite, is made by arranging overlapping splittings in layers , cemented with a binder and pressed together at high temperature. Reconstituted mica, or mica paper, is made by depositing fine flakes of high-quality scrap mica in a continuous film impregnated with binder. Scrap and flake mica are normally unsuitable in quality or size for making sheet mica. Originally the term scrap mica referred to the waste byproduct of mining and fabricating sheet mica, and distinct uses were developed for this material. Subsequently it became economically feasible to mine lower quality mica for these uses, and the term flake mica was introduced. Although the two terms are still used somewhat synonymously, it is considered better, at least in the United States, to use the term flake mica in referring to mica mined for uses other than as sheet mica; and to restrict the term scrap mica to mica mined for or with sheet mica, but which will not meet the specifications. Synthetic mica, such as fluorophlogopite, is produced by slow crystallization of a melted blend of pure raw materials. Mineralogy In the true sense the term mica does not relate to, a particular mineral, but to a group or family of minerals of similar chemical composition and to some extent similar physical properties. These minerals are predominantly potassium aluminum silicates with varying amounts of magnesium, iron, and lithium. The precise formulas and isomorphic relationships of the various group members have been studied, but general agreement has not been reached (Grimshaw, 1971; Hurlbut, 1952; Skow, 1962). The general formula describing the chemical composition of micas is [X2Y4-6Z8020(OH, F)4, where X is mainly K, Na, or Ca; Y is mainly Al, Mg, or Fe; Z is mainly Si or Al (Deer, et al., 1962).] These minerals have an internal structure of the layered lattice type where the silicon atoms are in the center of a tetrahedral grouping of oxygen atoms. The groups are linked together in a single plane by three oxygen atoms that lie within the common plane. Each of these oxygen atoms is shared by two tetrahedra. These linked tetrahedral groups, when continually extended, produce a hexagonal network within the plane. This internal structure of the mica has been used to explain the ex-

Mica can claim a considerably greater importance than would be assumed from its comparatively small dollar volume, which came to about $37,000,000 for the United States industry as a whole in 1957. Mica is one of the strategic minerals. We must depend on imports from distant sources for virtually all of our requirements of high grade block and all of our mica splittings. Mica is essential and indispensable for vacuum tubes and high-performance condensers, two electronic components which are vital military necessities besides being nearly indispensable to civilization today. Composition and Properties Mica is the general name for a group of some nine different minerals, two of which, muscovite and phlogopite, are the minerals used by the mica industry as its raw material. Several of the other varieties are commercially useful-vermiculite, * used for heat insulation in expanded form, and lepidolite, used as an ore of lithium while the others-biotite, roscoelite lepidomelane, paragonite and zinnwaldite have little or no commercial importance. Biotite frequently occurs as an undesirable impurity in muscovite. Table 1 lists various properties and other data concerning muscovite and phlogopite. Chemically, mica is a complex silicate of sodium, potassium and aluminum. Most varieties of muscovite are higher in sodium, and of phlogopite in magnesium. There are no important uses of mica where the chemical analysis is important, except that in some uses of ground mica, the content of iron oxide present as an impurity must be kept to a very low limit. Muscovite occurs in a range of color from the so-called India "ruby" which is more closely a pinkish brown, to light and dark green, with numerous other intermediate shades. Ruby color is usually preferred by industry, especially in the better qualities. When split very thin the color in most [ ] micas disappears. Muscovite mica is frequently found containing black and red "stain" as a homogeneous part of the books or sheets. In most cases this stain or impurity is magnetite

Mica is a generic term that applies to a group of complex aluminosilicate minerals that have a sheet or plate-like structure and with different chemical compositions and physical properties. All micas form flat six-sided monoclinic crystals with remarkable cleavage parallel to the direction of the large surfaces, which permits them to be split into optically flat films; as thin as 1µm in thickness in some cases (Rajgarhia, 1987). Some micas are more easily split than others. For example, muscovite mica found in pegmatites is more easily split into thin films than is phlogopite. Mica found in mica schist is not as easily delaminated as mica found in weathered pegmatites. According to Dawson (1 949), the commercially important mica minerals are: Muscovite-potassium mica (colorless to pale green and ruby) Biotite-magnesium-iron mica (dark brown to black) Phlogopite-magnesium mica (pale yellow to dark brown) Vermiculite-hydrated biotite or magnesium-iron-mica (bronze yellow flakes) Lepidolite-potassium-lithium mica (pale lilac to deep purple) Some micas of less importance are: Zinnwaldite-lithium-iron mica (gray to smoky brown) Roscoelite-vanadium-potassium-magnesium mica (various shades of green and brown) Mica, principally muscovite, is widely used for industrial applications because of its exceptional physical, chemical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties (Table 1). Phlogopite and vermiculite follow muscovite in importance. Biotite finds very little commercial application at the present time. Commercially, mica is used in a number of forms. These forms and their description follow: Sheet mica refers to books of mica either mined from hard rock (pegmatites) or from loosely consolidated clayey material formed from the weathering of pegmatites and alaskites. These books can be readily split into thin film or splittings with specific thicknesses ranging from 0.0031 to 0.10 mm (Davis, 1985). Quality sheet mica is graded into 10 quality classifications (Tables 2 and 3). Books of mica that are flawed with excess inclusions, cracks, or folds (A mica) are called scrap mica and are either ground into commercial products by a dry or wet process. Built-up mica was developed in 1894 as a result of the cost and scarcity of sheet mica, and because many satisfactory electrical parts could be made from it (Preston, 1971). This type mica is formed by layering pieces of mica splittings upon one another and binding them together with inorganic or organic binders. These sheets are then pressed together under high temperature. Mica for this process is produced from pieces of sheet mica too small to be punched into electrical parts (Davis, 1985). Reconstituted mica is mica paper produced by forming a mat of very thin delaminated flakes of scrap mica. This mat is usually impregnated with an organic binder, but is also available unimpregnated. It is dried at 110°C. The mica for this process is either produced from the trimmings of a sheet mica operation or from blocks of A type mica (Davis, 1985, Chapman, 1983). Ground mica constitutes by far the largest use of mica, both quantitatively and application wise. It is produced by grinding and sizing scrap mica (also mica concentrate) obtained from five sources, 1) trimming from sheet mica, 2) A type mica blocks, 3) as a byproduct of spodumene and feldspar mining, 4) weathered pegmatites and alaskites, and 5) metamorphic schists. Synthetic mica is produced by crystal growth in a slowly cooled melt of accurately proportioned chemical oxides. Extended cooling times at a specific viscosity result in larger crystals. Many different micas have been formed by this process; however, fluorophlogopite is the most common.

In South Africa and in the rest of the world, the two mica minerals that have the most important commercial value are muscovite and vermiculite. Muscovite has been making a comparatively small but steady contribution to South Africa's mineral exports since about 1960. Vermiculite mining and concentration were started by the late Or Hans Merensky at Phalaborwa during 1946. Vermiculite has enjoyed good overseas sales since then, and during the past four years has become an important earner of foreign currency for South Africa. The various aspects of the micas that could be of general interest are briefly reviewed, such as the history of their exploitation, their mineralogy and chemistry, and their mining, concentration, production, sales, and future

For the past several years, the Bureau of Mines has conducted laboratory and continuous process development work on weathered mica pegmatites and micaceous schist ores to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. The research has resulted in the development of two processes for flotadon of mica: an acid cationic method for recovery of coarse mica, and an alkaline anionic-cationic method for recovery of fine mica. The research indicated that the two processes may be effectively utilized separately or in combination for flotation of mica from weathered pegmatites and micaceous schists. Concentrates containing over 98 percent mica, with recoveries ranging from 77 to 92 percent, were obtained from the pegmatite ores. The micaceous schist ores yielded concentrates containing 95 to 98 percent mica, with recoveries ranging from 70 to 83 percent. Part 1 of this report summarizes the process development work and demonstrates the feasibility of producing commercial- grade mica concentrates. The report also includes details of commercial beneficiation and grinding of .mica.

THIS paper gives the author's personal idea of the general viewpoint of the world's largest mica consumer, the U. S. Army, toward the supply, uses, and conservation of mica. However, to cover so broad a subject in a brief paper will require the dismissal of many phases with little or no mention. For example, it will be necessary to omit further reference to phlogopite or amber mica, even though amber block and splittings for certain spark plugs and commutator segments present some supply problems. This paper will deal entirely with muscovite, or white mica. MUSCOVITE MICA Muscovite mica is available commercially in four general forms; namely, as block mica, as splittings, as washer punch, and as scrap mica.1 No strategic importance is attached to washer punch and scrap mica, even though scrap has found some use in military construction and in electrical ceramics. The use of washer punch as such has fallen off with the non-manufacture of household electrical appliances. Some qualities of block mica are also of little or no interest, but other qualities of block mica and all splittings are considered of vital importance. Army equipment requires large amounts of muscovite mica splittings in the form of built-up mica commutator segments and coil insulation in motors and generators. Other military items using significant amounts of muscovite splittings are transformers, switchboards, and blasting apparatus. Flexible mica tape, made from bookform or loose-dusted splittings cemented to paper, linen, glass cloth, and other backing, is widely used in coil insulation in heavy electrical equipment and in aircraft generators. All muscovite mica splittings come from India, principally because of the enormous amount of hand labor required in their preparation. In this emergency, the need for them was anticipated and large industry and government stocks were on hand, while shipments have continued to come by sea in spite of wartime hazards. With the possible exception of certain bookform splittings, no trouble is anticipated in supply. Accordingly, the remainder of this paper is devoted to block (or sheet) muscovite mica, including condenser film that is split from block. THE MICA PROBLEM Block muscovite mica is commercially classified into the following general qualities, beginning with the best quality: I. Clear and Slightly Stained (C & SS). 2. Fair Stained (FS). 3. Good Stained (GS). 4. Stained (S). 5. Heavy Stained (HS). 6. Black Spotted. Mica mining in the United States is confined largely to pegmatites and schists in a few well-defined areas. The largest region extends from central Virginia southward through western North and South Carolina, northern Georgia, and east-central Alabama. 1, 2, 3 Whereas in western North Carolina these pegmatite dikes are weathered to only a shallow depth, they are deeply weathered in the Carolina Piedmont and in Georgia and Alabama. Particularly in Georgia and Alabama, mica is found in the decomposed slates and schists adjacent to the pegmatites, and in deeply weathered granites. Most flake mica is obtained as the major marketable product by crushing and milling pegmatites.4 To a lesser extent, mica is produced as a byproduct of feldspars and spodumene.6 Past research by the Bureau of Mines has developed two methods for mica flotation. One method utilizes acid-cationic flotation for recovery of mica." This method requires thorough desliming of the ore with consequent fine mica losses. The other method utilizes an alkaline-anionic-cationic process for recovering fine size mica from pegmatite ores after desliming sufficiently to remove clay materials but not so drastically as to remove the fine mica. 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 The latter process has also been successfully applied to a micaceous schist ore from California.14 This report summarizes the results of these research studies. Both of the flotation processes developed by the Bureau of Mines have been adopted by the mica industry and are being commercially utilized separately and in combination for flotation of mica from weathered pegmatite ores.

The clays in Eastern Washington occur in a variety of forms and are extracted for uses in Face Brick, paper coatings, and aggregates. Not in large volumes in comparison to other areas, not even from impressive large mines. However, mans utilization of these clays has progressed from historical clay tablets to the present technically oriented manufactured products of today. White Face Brick, perhaps the whitest produced anywhere is the unique product produced by INTERPACE CORPORATION's Mica Plant from these unusual clays. It is this basic characteristic feature of the clay's in the Mica area that differentiate them from the other clay's in this belt. ORIGIN The significant properties of clay's used in Face Brick are plasticity, fired color, fired strength, dry and fired shrinkage, the PCE or Pyrometeric Cone Equivalent, and extrudability. Testing clay's for these properties is standard laboratory procedure. No two clays are alike, and seldom can one clay be substituted for another. Mica White Clays respond favorable to all these properties, but more especially, the Mica Clays fire to a brilliant white color, from almost the natural state. The geologic history of Eastern Washington is largely conjectural because of the absence of rocks representing segments of geologic time. The oldest rocks in this area are the argillaceous and arenaceous sedimentary rocks which have been slightly metamorphosed. These rocks have been correlated with the Belt Series of the Pre-Cambrian age, although some may be older.
