Directly charging limestone into slag in BOF is a newly emerging technique which broke through the traditional BOF slagging principle. It is necessary to study the decomposition behavior of limestone in converter slag during BOF steelmaking. FeOx, SiO2, MnOx and pre-melting slags were mixed with limestone according to different quality proportion to simulate the environment of limestone in converter slag. TG-DTA results indicated that slag with individual component, including FeOx, SiO2 and MnOx, all had obvious effects on reducing the decomposition temperature of limestone. Pre-melting slags with multiple components had further reducing effects than individual component. XRD results showed converter slag component would react with decomposition product of CaCO3 and generate solid solution or oxide, reducing the activity of CaO and the decomposition temperature of CaCO3.

"Recently, vertical-type high-speed twin-roll casting (HSTRC) has been developed. The HSTRC shows extremely high cooling rates over 1,000 K/s even at the mid-thickness area. The fabricated strip has many metallurgical characteristics; super-saturation of alloying elements, fine solidified structure, and homogeneous distribution of fine constituent particles. In Al-Mn based alloys, the Mn alloying element can be supersaturated in the a-Al matrix and also form Mn-containing constituent particles during solidification. The Mn supersaturation and the distribution of primary/secondary particles in cast products affect the metallurgical behavior in the down-stream processing and can improve mechanical properties of the final products. In this study, Al-Mn based alloy strips were fabricated by HSTRC with various Mn contents. The solidified microstructure, constituent particles and its distribution, and Mn solubility were investigated in the as-cast condition. Due to the high cooling rate of HSTRC, fine constituent particles were homogeneously distributed, and coarse intermetallics were not observed. Mn solid solubility was estimated by electrical conductivity. The estimated Mn solubility was equivalent between strip surface and mid-thickness area.INTRODUCTION Al-Mn based alloys, as non-heat treatable wrought aluminum alloys, are widely used in packaging and heat exchanger for automobile industry. Besides Mn, Al-Mn based alloys often contain Fe and/or Si as alloying elements or natural impurities. During solidification, Mn can be super-saturated in the Al matrix, and also form Mn-containing constituent particles. Additionally, in the subsequent thermal-mechanical processes such as homogenization, rolling, and intermediate annealing, Mn in solid solution precipitates out of the Al matrix as secondary particles. The size, distribution, type, and the amount of dispersoids including constituent particles affect to texture evolution, recrystallization behavior, and final mechanical properties of wrought Al-Mn based alloys (Huang et al., 2016; Huang & Marthinsen, 2015; Engler et al., 1995; Muggerud et al., 2013). Therefore, controlling the initial level of Mn super-saturation and the distribution of constituent particles are important in the cast Al-Mn based alloys."

"2507 super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) has been widely applied in a marine environment, attributing to its excellent pitting corrosion resistance and mechanical properties which are particularly determined by the nitrogen precipitation behaviors and volume fraction of ferrite. In this paper, various cooling rates were obtained by applying four different moulds with the common gating system. By which the influence of cooling rates on nitrogen precipitation behaviors and the ferrite fraction in cast 2507 SDSS was comparatively investigated. The results showed that nitrogen porosity could easily precipitate in cast 2507 SDSS under standard atmospheric pressure. The number of nitrogen holes increased with decreasing the cooling rates, and the holes mainly distributed in three zones, i.e. the interface between the horizontal and vertical columnar grains, top vertical columnar grains and the final solidification region. Additionally, higher ferrite fraction was obtained with lower cooling rates.IntroductionDuplex stainless steels (DSS) have a dual-phase microstructure consisting of ferrite (d) and aus-tenite (?). Due to the combined advantageous properties of d and ? phase, their application rapid-ly increased in industry [1, 2]. Super duplex Stainless Steel (SDSS) is the third generation of du-plex stainless steels, of which the alloy elements Cr, Ni and N content are higher than the stand-ard 2205 DSS. Because it has high contents of alloy elements, the SDSS has better mechanical properties, and its pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) reached a point 43. Hence SDSS has been used in petroleum chemical industry, the marine equipment and harsh corrosion environments [3]. SDSS contains ferrite stabilizing elements, such as Cr, Mo and Si, and austenite stabilizing elements like Ni, Mn and N [4]. Many researchers have studied the effects of these elements on the stabilization of d and ? phase and the ratio of the two phases. High nitrogen con-tent is another prominent feature of SDSS. Nitrogen addition to SDSS is very effective for improving its mechanical properties [5] and corrosion resistance [6], such as pitting resistance in NOx environment. To increase the nitrogen content in steels, a lot of work had been done. N. Nakamura and S. Takaki [7] examined the behavior of nitrogen absorption in Fe-23Cr alloy powder by sintering in nitrogen gas atmosphere, they found nitrogen content easily up to 1.0 wt. %. Using devised NH3 gas injection system, W. Park et al. [8] successfully produced austenitic Fe–23.5Cr alloys containing over 3 wt. % of nitrogen. Further-more, W.P. Tong et al. [9] stated that nitrogen percent was extraordinary high (about 10 wt. %) in pure iron plate. However, the above methods are difficult to be applied to large-scale industrial production."

It is shown that dewatering of fine coal particles (D50 : 21 microns) is enhanced near the point of zero charge. The coal surface is modified by the addition of copper ions and adjusting pH to precipitate surface active metal hydroxy species which promote agglomeration and produce low moisture cakes. Filtration kinetics data are used in calculating filter cake parameters from an integrated form of Darcy's law. The influence of copper ions and pH on filter cake parameters and correlations among them are presented.

MUCH study has been given by engineers in general, and investigators in particular, to the concentration of stress which occurs under load in structural members having irregularities in section such as notches, shoulders, key ways, tool marks, etc. The result of the effect of both fresh and salt water corrosion upon the endurance properties of various metals and alloys has been ably determined and the general laws underlying these phenomena carefully pointed out by McAdam. From a practical standpoint, 'however, it is after all the endurance value of corroded, non-symmetrical sections which is most pertinent. In the experiments about to be described rotating cantilever specimens of nickel steel of the 3.5 per cent nickel ' 0.35 per cent carbon type have been used. These were machined from bars l 1/8. in. dia. and 9% in. long and were heat-treated by quenching in oil from 825 deg. C. followed by reheating to 650' C. and oil quenching. AMONG the many causes of that perplexing feature of mine-exploitation, the unequal distribution of the ore, the influence of the country-rock upon the vein-contents has long been accepted as an important factor in certain districts, but the general application of the theory has not been proved. It is now possible to obtain trustworthy data with which to test the theory, and either to confirm or to overthrow this time-honored tradition. By the searching methods of modern petrography and chemistry, rock-determinations are now scientifically made, while the examination of thin sections of ores supplements field- and laboratory-study, and affords conclusive evidence of the paragenesis of the ore-minerals. In the great mass of data regarding mineral deposits accumulated during the past century, there are some facts which stand the test as to reliability; but the greater part are not available for use in this discussion. Within the last 20 years, however, many able workers have contributed careful and accurate accounts of various ore-deposits; and it is by the facts given in such papers, and by personal experience, that. I have become convinced that there is in some districts a true relation between the country-rock and the mineral contents of the veins. My own interest in the subject arose from the observation of a number of striking instances of the variation of vein-contents with the nature of the inclosing rock. Having already recorded certain observations of this kind, I venture to present in this paper further notes, together with a few facts from the literature of the subject, which seem to prove the correctness of my view. Based on the analysis of properties of vanadium tailing (VT), the surface modification study was carried out as a polymer filler. The modification effects of the three kinds of coupling agents on VT and the mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP) composites with a modified vanadium tailing (MVT) were compared to determine the suitable surface modification agent and modification processes for VT. The results show that the best one is aluminate coupling agent DL-411. When the content is 1.2 wt% and the temperature was 100 °C, the activity index of modified vanadium tailing (MVT) is 95.53%. FTIR analysis shows that DL-411 has the strongest binding ability on VT. XRD analysis shows that VT has a heterogeneous nucleation on PP to induced b form formation, and DL-411 could enhance this nucleation. So the composites has higher strength and better toughness. When the content of MVT is 10 phr, the tensile strength, impact strength, flexural strength and flexural modulus of the composites are 47.51 MPa, 38.43 kJ/m2, 59.57 and 1654.36 MPa, respectively.

Six creep laws for salt, each fitted to the same laboratory data base, are used in a numerical model of the deformation of an opening in salt to determine the influence of creep law form on the predicted closures. Results show that predicted closures can be very sensitive to the functional form of the creep law chosen to model the laboratory data.

"Studies of the flow fields and particle impaction characteristics are more complicated in multi-nozzle impactors than in single-nozzle impactors, since the jets of air must penetrate cross-flowing air to impinge on the impaction plate. Results of heat and mass transfer analysis are employed to describe the cross-flow pattern in multi-nozzle impactors. A cross-flow parameter has been derived to predict the deflection of the air jet by the cross-flow. This parameter is expressed as a function of the geometric parameters for the multi-nozzle impactor. DnN 4D,, where N is the number of nozzles, Dn the nozzle diameter and D, the nozzle cluster diameter. Empirical particle collection data show that multi-nozzle impactors operate satisfactorily, if the cross-flow parameter is less than a critical value of 1.2. Impactors operating with a cross-flow parameter larger than this critical value are shown to possess poor particle collection characteristics.Inertial impactors of many designs have been used for sampling aerosol particles. Impactors can be single stage, consisting of a nozzle and an impaction plate, or a cascade impactor with several stages in series. The simplest design for a stage is a single nozzle with a flat impaction plate. However, many designs use stages with multiple nozzles of identical size, which allows for compact impactors to be designed at rather substantial flow rates and moderate pressure drops.Nearly all of the theoretical work, and much of the experimental work, has been performed on single-nozzle impactors. The results of single-nozzle impactor analysis are often applied to multiple-nozzle impactors, which are assumed to be a group of individual nozzles, each operating as though they were single nozzles. However, an important fact is often ignored: the interaction of flow from adjacent nozzles can change not only the fluid mechanics in the impaction region, but also the locations of the jet stagnation points, and the impaction characteristics of each nozzle.The effect of multiple nozzles on the particle collection characteristics of impactors has been studied by a few investigators. May (1964), Fletch et al. (1967), Friedrichs (1968), and Vaughan (1986) reported that the quantity of particles in deposits of nozzles in the first two stages of the Andersen multi-nozzle cascade impactor were not equal. The inner deposits appeared to contain fewer particles than the outer ones. However, Vaughan (1986) in addition showed that many of the deposits in the outer three rows were missing on the first stage, even though the outer deposits that were present were larger than the inner deposits.May (1964) conducted experiments and explained the phenomenon of smaller deposits near the center than near the edge. He noted that in Andersen cascade impactors the air issuing from the nozzles moves radially outward along the narrow channel between the nozzle plate and the impaction plate. This flow at 28.31min -1 created a pressure difference of about 1 mm water between the inner and outer sections of the channel. The effect was most pronounced in the first two stages, where the pressure drop across the nozzles was also about 1 mm water. Here, the flow velocities in the nozzles, and hence the deposits, were smallest at the center and increased toward the periphery of the impaction plate. since the pressure drop across the nozzles was the smallest at the center and a maximum at the periphery. This effect was negligible in the lower stages because of a larger pressure drop across the nozzles. According to May (1964), this effect could be eliminated by increasing the nozzle-to-impaction-plate distance to three nozzle diameters and improving the nozzle arrangement to allow air flow to escape to the periphery more easily."

"Mesoporous materials with large specific surface area, pore size, and pore volume have been widely used in many fields such as ion exchange, gas separation, adsorption, and catalysis. Mesoporous materials prepared using natural zeolite have the advantages of both acid and alkali resistance. In this work, mesoporous materials were prepared using natural zeolite as the starting material and diethylenetriamine (DETA) as a template. The resulting samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and N2 adsorption-desorption experiments. The influence of the crystallization temperature and crystallization time on the specific surface area, pore volume, pore size, and morphology of the resulting mesoporous materials are also discussed. Our results show that for an increase in both the crystallization temperature and time, the average pore size first increases then decreases, while the specific surface area first decreases then increases. Based on this work, we concluded that the optimal crystallization temperature was 2003 and the optimal crystallization time was 60 h. These conditions gave an average pore size of 17.93 nm, a pore volume of 0.048 cm3g-1, and a specific surface area of 16.48 m2g-1.INTRODUCTIONMesoporous zeolite, as the name implies, is a highly porous crystalline zeolite. This material is of interest due to its high hydrothermal stability, its adsorption and diffusion properties for macromolecules, and its excellent selectivity and activity as a catalyst. The lack of progress in controlling pulmonary diseases such as pneumoconiosis cases in recent years necessitates additional studies on dust generation and the characterization of airborne dust. Studies are underway by a NIOSH-sponsored project to observe the characteristics of the dust generated by pick cutters under various wear levels. This research performed a full-scale linear-cutting-test matrix on eight coal samples with various bit penetrations, spacing, and wear conditions. The specific energy and resulting PSD (particle size distribution) of airborne dust and material left at the cutting surface were measured and analyzed. The dust concentration was determined using the NMAM (NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods) 0600 method. For fines, the PSD was characterized using Laser Diffraction, measuring percent channel and aerodynamic diameter, while Imagej, a virtual sieving application, was used for larger particles. The results show that for a new bit, as the cutting depth and spacing increase, the specific energy and dust generation decrease. The size and shape of the dust particles have been analyzed, and the observed trends are discussed in this paper.

Roof falls are one of the greatest hazards in underground coal mines worldwide. Due to stringent safety measures and extensive support system development, roof falls have been reduced significantly but they still persist in many underground coal mines. Some of the roof falls initiate with cutter roof or guttering. In the past, many factors have been identified as being responsible for the development of cutters and roof fall. These responsible factors can be broadly classified as stress related or non-stress related. In this paper the finer details of mining technique have been taken into consideration for better understanding of cutter roof and roof fall problems. Three dimensional finite difference modeling has been used to explain the mechanism of cutter development. Strain softening material behavior has been used to realistically simulate the cutter formation, and common cutting sequences as implemented in the field have been simulated. This was done with an objective to determine whether the cutting sequence has really any significant control over cutter formation or not. In addition to cutting sequences, the effect of cut length is also studied. The effect of step cutting and turning of crosscut into and away from major and minor horizontal stresses is also examined to see its influence on cutter development.

The dissolution of Ag contained in metallurgical tailings was studied by adding ions Cu2+ and Zn2+ in S2O3 2- medium. Chemical analysis of mine tailings by cupellation revealed a Ag concentration of 71 g/ton. The XRF and XRD analysis confirmed the preponderance of SiO2 in the mineral matrix. The experimental dissolution process was conducted in alkaline solution using six concentrations of NaOH and five of S2O3 2-, at different temperatures, also using five concentrations of Cu2+ and Zn2+ as a catalyst. The results showed similar values for both systems (96.8% and 97.13%). The ion Cu2+ and Zn2+ increases the dissolution of Ag, and decrease the reaction time of dissolution. Under the conditions used, pH and stirring rate did not affect the dissolution of Ag.

The optimisation of mineral processing plants requires the evaluation of performance indices such as production rate, product quality, valuable mineral recovery and process efficiency. Decision to change operating conditions or equipment to improve plant performances rely on the significancy of the estimated performance indices. The better is the quality of the estimation, the better is the discrimination capability of the index and as a consequence the larger is the operation improvement. The reliability of performance calculation depends on the sensors nature, accuracy and location, on the data redundancy, on the correction method applied to raw data and finally on the propagation of measurement errors along the calculation of performance indices. To maximize the quality of the data collected for performance evaluation, the following techniques are presented, discussed and illustrated: redundancy and observability analysis, data filtering for mass conservation, variance analysis of performance calculation, and data acquisition strategy design.

Ground movements associated with high extraction underground coal mining, such as pillar retreat and longwall, are some- times large enough to disrupt the ground water regime as well as damage buildings and other surface structures. A U.S. Department of Energy Bureau of Mines- sponsored subsidence study at Kitt Energy Corporation's Kitt No. 1 Mine near Philippi (Barbour County) , West Virginia has provided an opportunity to monitor the ground water response above a mine panel during both developmental and pillar re- treat mining. Findings concerning ground water effects presented in this paper indicate that total extraction mining produced significant water level declines in deep-lying strata but had little effect on water levels at shallower depths. Post-mining values of hydraulic conductivity were typically somewhat higher than pre-mining values. Changes in water chemistry associated with mining were not sufficient to render the water unfit for human consumption.

"The influence of deformation on the properties of short-carbon-fiber reinforced 2024 alloy matrix composites was investigated in this study. It was found that the distribution of carbon fibers changed from the random state before deformation to the ordered state that carbon fibers arranged along the direction of rolling and extruding after deformation. Under the temperature range in control, the increase of rolling and extruding temperature would benefit to improve strength and elongation of composites, but was not conductive to improve the hardness of composites. With the increment of total deformation, all the strength and the hardness of composites became greater, nevertheless the elongation decreased. After being rolled and extruded, the strength and the hardness of composites were all bigger than those of composites before being rolled and extruded; moreover, the strength of extruded 2024 alloy matrix composites was higher than that of rolled 2024 alloy matrix composites under the same heat treatment conditions.IntroductionCarbon fibers have been reckoned as very important reinforcements due to the high specific strength, specific modulus, high thermal and electric conductivity, low expansion coefficient and good self-lubricant properties [1-4]. Light metal composites reinforced with carbon fibers, such as carbon fibers in an aluminum matrix, are widely used and studied. Some studies have concentrated on the interfacial characteristic of CF/Al composites in order to search for the way of improving the bonding between carbon fibers and the matrix alloy [5-8], and on the influence of the carbon fiber percent composition in the composites [9-11]. Some researchers began to take interest in the deforming characteristic and failure behavior of carbon fiber reinforced metal matrix composites [12-16]. However, the same with other metal materials, most of CF/AI composites were prepared by some single processes, such as powder metallurgy, extrusion casting and vacuum press infiltration, which caused that the composites products could not be manufactured directly. In order to cover the shortage of the mentioned above processes and get composites products with perfect mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy, the composites should be reworked by rolling, extruding or forging process. Compared with research about manufacturing process, the correlative investigation on the reworking of CF/Al composites was much less evidently, which restricted the application and the further development of CF/Al composites."

"The paper describes influence of desorbed species (DS) of a number of xanthates and higher dialkyldithiophosphates on the collective ability of these reagents. Adsorbed on mineral DS of the reagents in the form of products of non-stoichiometric interaction between xanthates and heavy metal salts can pass to the gas–liquid interface and remove liquid from the layer between mineral particle and water surface. A high-speed video recording displays the process of spreading of DS of xanthates and dialkyldithiophosphates over water at the moment of local rupture of the water layer. Expansion of “dry” spot on the mineral surface after DS of xanthate capture and displace liquid from the layer has been proved with video images. The comparative analysis of collecting ability and dynamic surface activity of dialkyldithiophosphates shows that these characteristics are in good correlation. The forces exerted by spreading film of the reagent’s DS on liquid in the water layer are evaluated, and the water flow rate from the layer is determined. The line of the reduction in thickness of the water layer behind the front of spreading film of DS of dialkyldithiophosphates and xanthates coincides with the line of the increase in their dynamic surface activity. Their force on the liquid volume in the water layer characterizes collecting ability of the DS film of xanthates and dialkyldithiophosphates. It has been supposed that the collecting ability of DS of a reagent is a part of its overall flotation activity, conditioned by surface tension of solution and, thus, defined by the structure of hydrocarbon fragment of the reagent.INTRODUCTIONIt is believed that collecting ability and selectivity of collecting reagents is mainly governed by adsorption of a reagent at the solid–liquid interface. A few studies have shown that activity of collecting reagents at the gas–liquid interface may have deep influence on their collecting capacity and selectivity. Experimental researches have revealed correlation between surface pressure in a carboxylic acid film on liquid’s free surface and floatability of useful components (Kulkarni & Somasundaran, 1975; 1980; Quast, 2006). According to Quast (2006), it is not always that surface pressure of a reagent film influences collecting ability of carboxylic acid. For instance, pH range of adsorption of tetradecanoic acid on hematite does not coincide with pH range of high surface pressure. So, surface properties of this acid contribute little to flotation efficiency.The correlation between reagent film surface pressure and mineral floatability has been reveled for quartz and cationic reagents, too (Bleier, Goddard, & Kulkarni, 1977). Finch & Smith (1973) showed that combination of adsorption of ion–molecular amine complexes on mineral surface and high surface tension of “fresh bubbles” was favorable for flotation performance. The use of bubbles with reduced surface tension resulted in a decrease in quartz floatability."

Drilled shafts are a popular type of foundation for transportation applications. They feature the advantages of providing high bearing capacity and generating low construction noise. Advancements in construction technology make it possible to construct drilled shaft with large diameters. In some transportation projects, the full structural loads are carried by a single large diameter drilled shaft; therefore accurately determining the bearing capacity of drilled shafts has important practical and safety implications. The increase of drilled shaft diameter combined with the structure properties of the surrounding soil play in an important role in their bearing capacity. The conventional methods for bearing capacity determination, which mostly come from experience with small diameter drilled shafts, may not work satisfactorily. This paper studies the influence of diameter on the bearing capacity of laterally loaded drilled shafts. Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the effects of pile diameter on the lateral bearing capacity, especially the influence of shaft diameter and its structural contributions.
