Dicha empresa introdujo el método Alimak para excavación de las chimeneas con su plataforma trepadora, la cual comprende la perforación circular desde la plataforma Alimak para el ensanche de chimeneas, la explotación en vetas Angostas - Vein Mining y preparación de galerías ( jumbos con martillos neumáticos e hidráulicos. Posteriormente se compra una variedad de equipos para jumbos, winches, soldadoras neumáticas, etc., para la minería.

El objetivo del texto es señalar el aprovechamiento de zonas mineralizadas, cuya explotación por métodos convencionales no tuvo resultados económicos, sino solo a través de un sistema racionalizado de minería sin rieles. En este sentido, la explotación de los block mineralizados se realiza a un nivel mínimo de producción de 150 a 160 T.C.S diarias, donde las rampas de acceso para la explotación de otras vetas se constituyen en una forma integral de explotación. Asimismo se considera el planeamiento operacional a corto, medio y largo plazo, se evalúan las condiciones operacionales, la explotación, método de minado, cargui, extracción, sostenimiento, relleno, las necesidades de personal y selección de equipos y los costos de producción e inversión.

En este sentido, el método aumenta el rendimiento mediante la utilización de un scoop y elimina el sostenimiento tradicional a través de la utilización del relave aumentado, ofreciendo confianza y seguridad al personal en operación.

The Australian metallurgical processing industry has shown great innovation and progressiveness over the past ten years. During the same period, exploration activity, particularly by Australian companies, has increased substantially in Indonesia. Following feasibility studies, the decision was made to establish a metallurgical laboratory and design facility in Indonesia. An Indonesian partner was selected, and legal and corporate matters were determined. The laboratory was established but proved far more difficult than a similar undertaking in Australia. Australian and Indonesian staff were recruited and training programs, including training of Indonesian staff in Australia, were implemented. Difficulties of operating in Indonesia included: ò language difficulties ò _ local pace of life ò culture ò communications. Rewards of the decision to establish the means to present the technology to Indonesia have included: ò a contribution to Australia's export of technology. ò an opportunity to expand Normet's client base. ò the opportunity to learn aspects of a foreign culture. ò the means to establish a sound long term investment. This export of technology from the Australian mining industry to Indonesia is an example of the initiatives and capabilities shown by the Australian mining service industry.

The United States has never been a large coal exporting nation, and normally such shipments, aside from those to Canada, have been relatively small. Since the first railroad was built across the Allegheny Mountains, the imports have been quite small also, although fairly large tonnages of Canadian coal have moved into the extreme northeastern and northwestern states at times. In Table 21 are shown all data available about these shipments from 1790 to 1939, inclusive.

Uncertainty quantification is a means of articulating the reliability of model estimations. Models of copper pyrometallurgical processes have been published for decades but discussion of their reliability has typically been terse and qualitative, mitigating understanding of their exact applicability to industrial situations. This presentation shows basic uncertainty propagation and Bayesian model calibration, two powerful uncertainty quantification tools, applied to a reduced order model of copper fire/anode refining. The implications of the uncertainty quantification analyses on the applicability of the model results to industrial practice are then discussed. Finally, other possible applications of uncertainty quantification to copper extractive metallurgy are explored. INTRODUCTION Modern copper production operations, including mining operations through wire drawing factories, are ubiquitously heavily instrumented. Most mine-sites and smelters have large repositories of historical data. That said, much of this data is not exploited to its maximum effect. This proceeding provides examples of using uncertainty quantification (UQ) to maximize the informational yield of the data collected from a fire-refining operation. Anode/Fire Refining is the final pyrometallurgical step in the production of copper anodes; it is an essential and universally employed processing step at smelters (Schlesinger, King, Sole, & Davenport, 2011). Much like the smelting and converting furnaces further up the process stream, anode furnaces are difficult to instrument due to their high temperature and the corrosive and/or caking quality of their offgas. This makes continuous and accurate measurement of the streams leaving the unit operation, e.g. liquid copper, slag, and offgas very difficult. As an example, offgas flowmeters, while providing continuous draft values, could miss the actual draft value by tens of percent due to caking or corrosion. UQ methods account for the uncertainty in process measurements and parameter values; they use a process model with measurements of performance indices to provide better and better estimations of process performance. This proceeding will first introduce a surrogate model for copper fire refining, made from a 1D, transient, reacting flow model of the process presented elsewhere in these proceedings (Mather & Krane, 2019). Discussion of the data used to make the surrogate model, as well as the creation of the surrogate model, will be included. Then, a Monte Carlo simulation will be performed, showing the expected soot production rate based on the surrogate model and assumptions about the uncertainty in the model’s parameters. Finally, the surrogate model parameters will be calibrated in a Bayesian way; this will tell what the actual uncertainty in the parameters are, given a set of observed industrial data and prior assumptions of the observations’ and parameters’ uncertainty.

Risk assessment in the mining industry is currently a topic of great interest with risk methodologies being increasingly applied beyond the traditional areas of finance and feasibility to analyses of risks due to various physical hazards including chemical, electrical, mechanical and geotechnical sources. The application of risk analysis and evaluation techniques to the management of personnel safety is being promoted by both industry and regulators but, particularly for geotechnical hazards, often there are inadequate databases for a meaningful quantitative calculation of risk. In Western Australia over the decade 1987 - 1997, the annual fatality rate for underground mining has averaged at approximately 1.3 in 1000 employees with rockfalls/rockbursts accounting for over half of these deaths (Prevention of Mining Fatalities Taskforce, 1997). Recent improvements have been made since this time, perhaps halving the annual fatality rate, mainly due to industry improving ground control measures and implementing various recommendations from the Prevention of Mining Fatalities Taskforce (1997). However there still remain a large number of unknowns when trying to address the complex area of geotechnical risk in mining. Risk calculations require information about the source of the hazard, the people or assets exposed to the hazard (the æelements at riskÆ) and the effects on these vulnerable elements if the hazard actually occurs (the potential consequences). To date, little information has been available on the exposure of mining personnel and equipment to underground hazards other than occupational safety studies on chemicals, heat, dust, etc. This paper concentrates on underground geotechnical risks and presents a data collection and rating system for the exposure of both the underground workforce and equipment to rockfalls and rockbursts. The methodology considers exposure times, personnel protection levels and hazard proximities to give exposure ratings for the major underground mining activities and hence rate different locations within a mine. This exposure methodology is then applied to the workforce and production/ development cycles in an actual WA underground mine, creating a snapshot map of differing levels of personnel exposure across the mine.

Libby, Montana is the site of a large vermiculite deposit that was mined between 1920 and 1990 to extract vermiculite for commercial applications such as insulation, gardening products, and construction materials. The Libby vermiculite deposit also contains amphibole minerals including tremolite, actinolite, richterite, and winchite. Historically, Libby mine workers experienced high exposures to amphibole structures, and, as a group, have experienced the health consequences of those occupational exposures. It has been suggested that Libby residents also have been and continue to be exposed to amphibole structures released during the vermiculite mining operations and therefore are at increased risk for disease. The Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR) conducted two epidemiological-type studies of residents living in Libby and the surrounding areas to assess these risks. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) collected and analyzed exposure data in Libby and used those data to project risks of asbestos-associated disease for Libby residents. The EPA has placed the Libby Asbestos Site, which includes the mine and the town of Libby, on its National Priority List of hazardous waste sites in need of clean up. This article presents a review of the exposure studies conducted in Libby and an analysis of health risks based on the data collected in those studies. Libby mine workers have experienced elevated levels of asbestos-associated disease as a consequence of their occupational exposures to amphibole structures. Libby residents? exposures typically are substantially lower than mine workers? historical exposures, and the health risk projections for residents are, accordingly, substantially lower. © 2007 Published by Elsevier Inc. In the past, health concerns in coal mines have primarily centered on those elements which have been essentially inherent to the mining environment. These would include respirable coal mine dust, respirable crystalline silica, excessive noise levels, and diesel exhaust particulates. Commercially-available chemical products are prevalent on mine property. These potentially toxic materials are chemical formulations that can degrease, clean, and lubricate metal parts, separate coal from rock in float/sink operations, and aid in roof consolidation, among other uses. As the general public has become more aware of the hazards of chemical exposures, miners have likewise become more concerned about working with an ever-expanding variety of chemical products on the job. Often, product or chemical specific hazard communication training is inadequate or ineffective, and miners do not know exactly what the ingredients are in the products they handle, or the health hazards involved with their use or misuse. Currently, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), by law, enforces 1972 Threshold Limit Values (TLV). MSHA is making preparations to adopt new personal exposure limits for enforcement. The values given throughout the article are 1994 TLV's and are not enforcement standards, but are used for discussion purposes. They reflect the current scientific thinking regarding personal exposure to these chemical agents. An overview of these products is presented, and the potential health hazards associated with their use are discussed. Controls needed to prevent overexposures, such as proper handling procedures and personal protective equipment, are covered. Methods used to collect and identify contaminants are presented.

INTRODUCTION The components of the radiological hazard in uranium mines are: 1. exposure to radon and its short-lived daughters 2. exposure to long-lived ore dust 3. external irradiation With usual ventilation rates, the dosimetry relative to the first component only requires to know each miner&apos;s exposure to a potential energy of short-lived radon daughters, (EXP[a]). Presently in France, (EXP [a]) is determined monthly from radon concentration measurements. This is an indirect method based on ambient monitoring. After technical improvements achieved during the last years it is now possible to measure (EXP [a] directly with an individual portable monitor developed by the CEA. The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare monitoring results obtained by these methods. DETERMINATION OF INDIVIDUAL MONTHLY EXPOSURES TO[ a] POTENTIAL ENERGY OF SHORT-LIVED RADON DAUGHTERS [(EXP a) amb, by ambient monitoring] In this case, it is necessary to know individual monthly exposures to radon, (EXP Rn). As mentioned by Pradel, J.,et al., 1976, (EXP Rn) is estimated for each worker from informations both on radon concentrations (CRn) measured as described by Pradel, J., 1962 and times (t) elapsed in the various workplaces. (EXP Rn) is obtained by summing up the elementary radon exposures CRn x t relative to all the workplaces where the miner was successively engaged during the month. (EXP Rn) values are then corrected by an average equilibrium factor of 0.17 deduced from many measurements and taken as representative for all the French mines. Finally: [ ] (EXP [a])ind are obtained directly with an individual portable instrument described by Chapuis, A.M., et al., 1972. Samples of the air breathed by the miners are pumped continuously and radioactive aerosols containing the short-lived radon daughters are trapped on a filter. The principle of the measurement lies on track-etch detection of the a particles emitted by the deposited material. The technical aspects have been described by Duport, P., et al., 1980a, Mouden, A., et al., 1980 and Chapuis, A.M., 1980. As mentioned by Duport, P., et al., 1980, fiability is good. Indications on measurement reproducibility are given by Pradel, J., et al., 1977. PRESENTATION OF THE STUDY The underground miner population of a French mine was followed during a period of 8 months (October 1978 - May 1979). Monthly exposure values for each miner determined either by ambient or individual monitoring, (EXP [a])amb or (EXP[ a])ind, had been previously collected by Le Gac, J., 1980, who had also defined miner categories according to the characteristics of the work performed. Four groups are considered here, the "whole mine" and three categories as described in table 1. Data on the individual monthly exposures,(EXP [a])ind and (EXP [a])amb, were taken again to analyze the individual cumulative exposures instead of the "month by month" values. The influence of the mean habits of each individual on its surveillance results is thus taken into account. Each miner has a cumulative exposure as an individual of the "whole mine" and as an individual of each category in which he has worked. The results obtained by ambient or individual monitoring were analyzed (characteristics and adjustements of the distributions) and then compared (description of the discrepancies observed). Obviously, such a study is possible only if all the exposures are cumulated on a same duration. As miners have not worked during the same number of months in the course of the data collecting period, one must considerer the individual average monthly exposures, [(EXP a)]amb and[ (EXP a)]ind, instead of the individual cumulative exposures, which is typically the same thing. To be sure that the exposure values of a given group (A, B, C or D) are representative, only those miners really present for at least 3 months in this group were taken into account. Finally, each individual of the "whole mine" and of the various work categories has a pair of average monthly exposure values : [(EXP a)amb] determined by ambient monitoring and[ (EXP a)ind] deduced from the track-etch recording of the individual portable monitor. THE importance of the size composition of coal is reflected in the differ-ence in price of the various sizes of the same coal and in the large number of primary sizes and mixtures of sizes produced by the modern preparation plant to meet the demands of a market that in late years has grown increasingly conscious of coal size. The importance of size in the indus-trial and domestic uses of coal has its counterpart in the role played by size composition in the laboratory examination of coal. Investigation of many of the physical properties of coal in their relation to its uses requires an evaluation of size composition. In fact, the Standards on Coal and Coke issued by the American Society for Testing Materials in 1936 contains 12 standard methods of testing that involve some use of size composition. The screen analysis is, of course, the standard method of determining size composition, whether the material is coarse run-of-mine coal or fine pulverized fuel. Customarily, the analysis is reported as the weight percentages retained on or passing each of a series of testing screens, the number of which may range from only two or three to as many as 20. When more than two or three sieves are used, which is usual, the number of weight percentages obtained is so great as to make the analysis difficult to comprehend. Direct comparison of analyses made on the same sieves is hard, and comparison of analyses covering the same range of sizes but made oil different sieves is next to impossible. Consequently, a frequent purpose of sizing tests-correlation of size with properties and charac-teristics related to size-is rendered difficult.

Improve underground long-hole drilling efficiency and safety by developing a lightweight, easily transportable drilling pust that can be adjusted to fit a range of mine opening heights. Background Standard one-piece commercially available steel posts weigh approximately 10 pounds per foot. Transporting these posts underground and carrying them over obstacles and through small mine doors is very difficult. Because the length of a one-piece post cannot be adjusted, variations in mine opening height at the drilling site must be accommodated. This is accomplished by stacking several wooden blocks to form a base for the post, resulting in a dangerously unstable drilling setup. The only alternative to this unstable setup is to obtain a longer post. There problems can be reduced by the use of a two-piece telescoping aluminum post having a 3-foot adjustment range in 6-inch increments. The two-piece extendable post will be easy to transport and carry underground. It will fit any opening height within its adjustment range. One large wooden block is used as a base and one cap block is used at the top to bear against the mine roof. This arrangement results in a stable, rigid setup.

Underground testing was carried out by Ingersoll-Rand, Inc., under contract to the Bureau of Mines to determine the effectiveness of a machine-mounted scrubber system for ventilating the face during an extended advance. A continuous miner equipped with an integral flooded-bed dust scrubber system was instrumented with methanometers and Real-time Aerosol Monitor (RAM) dust monitors. Methane and respirable dust data were collected at brattice setbacks of 7.5 m (current operating distance), 10.5 m, and 15 m (blowing ventilation) during production shifts. Results showed that a suitable machine-mounted scrubber system can adequately ventilate the face at brattice setbacks up to 15 m. No deterioration in ventilation performance was observed as brattice setbacks were increased from 7.5 m to 15 m. The scrubber system effectively controlled face methane levels at large setbacks, though respirable dust levels increased as much as 33 pct at the operator&apos;s cab at setbacks greater than 7.5 m.

The Lower Olentangy Tunnel (LOT) Project involves the construction of a 17,000 ft (5,200 m) long, 12 ft (3.65 m) internal diameter Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) tunnel. The tunnel is excavated by using an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machine designed to cope with soft ground, weak rocks and water pressure. The project is located in the city of Columbus, Ohio and the main geotechnical hazards are related to the heterogenous soils and the low overburden in an urban environment. This paper focuses on the performance of the EPB first drive and the comparison between the design assumptions and the actual TBM performance during construction.

Although haulage truck collisions account for only a small percentage of haulage accidents, the likelihood of severe injury, or even death is very high when such a collision does occur. Most rear-end collisions also result in considerable equipment damage, creating a need for expensive repairs. To improve collision protection, some southwestern surface mines have, for several years, been fabricating and using extended bumpers. In cooperation with these mines, the Bureau of Mines has worked to improve this technology by evaluating the structural requiremnts of extended bumpers. How Extended Bumpers Help The Bureau found that when one large rear-dump haulage truck collides with the rear of another an extended bumper protects the driver of the vehicle that is struck by dissipating the impact energy into the rear tires and pushing the whole vehicle forward. An extended bumper also prevents the box on the truck that is hit from penetrating the cab of the other truck-a typical and serious collision hazard. A further advantage derives from the wide design of the extended bumper which helps prevent damage to truck ladders, thereby minimizing any entry or exit problems. Extended bumpers also provide safe work platforms at the front of large haulage vehicles.

The ground control aspects and occupational safety concerns of extended depth-of-cut mining are presented in this U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report. The scope of extended cut use and typical face operations while extracting extended cuts is reported. A comparative review of roof fall fatalities and a statistical analysis of accidents and injuries for both extended and nonextended cut mining is included. The views and opinions on extended cutting from a series of interviews with mine workers in five states are summarized. In addition, some of the problems and safety concerns of this extraction system are mentioned.

Abstract- Approaches to mineral potential mapping based on weights of evidence generally use binary maps, whereas, real-world geospatial data are mostly multi-class in nature. The consequent reclassification of multi-class maps into binary maps is a simplification that might result in a loss of information. This paper describes results of using multi-class evidential maps in an extended weights-of-evidence model vis-à-vis results of using binary evidential maps in a simple-weights-ofevidence model. The study area in the south-central part of Aravalli province (western India) hosts a number of SEDEX-type base metal deposits in Proterozoic supracrustal rocks. Recognition criteria for base metal deposits were represented as both multi-class and binary evidential maps. The known mineral deposits were divided into two subsets, viz., the training and the validation subsets. The training subset was used to calculate, for the evidential maps, the weights, contrasts, and posterior probabilities and their variances. The distributions of expected frequencies of base metal deposits estimated from the posterior probabilities and the observed frequencies were compared using standard goodness-of-fit tests to verify conditional independence of the input evidential maps. The posterior probabilities from both the models were mapped and interpreted to classify the study area into zones favorable, permissive, and non-permissive for base metal deposit occurrence. As compared to the simple weights-of-evidence model, the extended weights-of-evidence model results in more robust and finely differentiated posterior probabilities in favorable and permissive zones and has a better prediction rate. The results also reveal that the statistical properties of the weights of evidence, the contrasts, and the posterior probabilities are not significantly degenerated by using multi-class evidential maps in weights-of-evidence modelling.
