THE West Edmond oil field, which covers parts of Oklahoma, Canadian, Kingfisher, and Logan Counties in the State of Oklahoma, is in geographical extent the largest single oil field found in the state. At the present time, its area of 26,800 acres is almost twice as large as the Oklahoma City field, which hitherto was the state's largest field. Many authorities believe that the West Edmond field is the most important oil pool found in the United States since Pearl Harbor. The discovery of the field without the help of geological, geophysical, or other recognized technical information, the fact that the oil and gas accumulated in a stratigraphic or wedge-type trap, and the rapid development of the productive area under wartime conditions are some of the interesting features of the field. The West Edmond field lies west of the Oklahoma City, Britton, and Edmond fields. The field is in an area that has been considered on the west flank of the Granite Ridge line of folding, on which a number of Central Oklahoma's most important oil fields are located. Over a period of years, especially since the discovery of the new pools such as Oklahoma City, Edmond, Britton, and Crescent, the general area of the West Edmond field has been explored intensively by geological and geophysical methods. This led at times to the drilling of a few dry Wilcox sand tests.

OVERVIEW Like many older metropolitan areas across the U.S., the Greater Cleveland area is served by a combination of separate sanitary sewers and combined sanitary-stormwater sewers. In 1966, a Master Plan was implemented by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (District) to minimize pollutant overflows into adjoining Lake Erie and its tributary rivers and streams, that would occur during wet weather events. One component of the Master Plan was to reduce the load on combined sewers by constructing new conveyances to intercept separate sanitary flows and convey them to upgraded regional waste water treatment plants for priority treatment. As part of a 15-year program to construct 74 km (46 miles) of new interceptors, the West Leg Interceptor (WLI) Project intercepts flows from four decommissioned waste water treatment plants (WWTPs), and conveys those flows to the new Southwest Interceptor (SWI), which conveys the flows to the Southerly Treatment Plant, a tertiary level treatment facility. The WLI Project was built in sections to permit decommissioning of the WWTPs as each segment of the interceptor system was completed and put into service. Flows from the first of the four WWTPs was converted to the WLI in November, 1992; the final connection was achieved in July 1994. The WLI comprises 9.1 km (5.7 miles) of 21 to 29 m (70 to 95 ft) deep mainline interceptor tunnel, four vortex drop structures, approximately 2 km (1.3 miles) of shallow tunneled connector sewer to the mainline, approximately 2.9 km (1.8 miles) of open cut connector sewers, five construction work shafts (not including one work shaft constructed under SWI Contract 6 at the north end of the WLI), and 15 access shafts.

Presently about 60% of the world's nickel resources are tied up with lateritic ores while about 25% of the world's nickel is produced from sulphides. Based on this the industry has to focus on improving lateritic nickel economics in order to maintain the high use of the metal worldwide. In 1997 three junior mining companies in Australia organised finance against all odds and commenced development of three separate nickel and cobalt extraction plants treating lateritic nickel ores. All three projects utilise similar pressure acid leaching (PAL) technologies while each has unique metal recovery technologies All projects have experienced numerous processing and maintenance related difficulties such that full ore throughput has been reached by only one operation after five years. This shortfall in performance has caused the owners considerable angst and financial pain. In 2000 Cawse went into receivership and was purchased by an international corporation. Recently, Bulong also went into receivership and has undergone an orderly shutdown, awaiting sale to a new buyer. Murrin Murrin has settled with its financiers and is in a position to operate as planned for many years forward. This paper will discuss a number of the technical difficulties that affect the ore preparation, PAL and solution treatment circuits of these plants. The objective is to identify the cause of some of the difficulties and propose possible solutions so that the next generation of lateritic operations can emerge as technically and, more importantly, economic successes. A number of these process improvements have been identified by the existing operators and in many instances have been or are being implemented into the existing operations.

"AbstractThe Sedimentary Basin area of Western Canada, which lies between the Precambrian Shield and the Cordilleran mountain area, covers approximately 800,000 square miles. Sediments ranging in age from Cambrian to Tertiary are present and, of these, horizons in the Upper and Lower Cretaceous, Jurassic, Mississippian, and Devonian have yielded commercial oil and gas flows. Producing horizons in the Cretaceous and Jurassic are sandstone, while all those of the Palaeozoic are carbonate rocks such as red limestone or dolomite (bioherms). Shows of oil and gas have been encountered also in the Cambrian and Triassic sediments.The broad structural features of this vast expanse of sedimentary rocks are the Moose Jaw syncline, the Sweet Grass-Battle River arch, the Alberta syncline, the Foothills belt, the Rocky and Mackenzie mountains, the Great Bear-Slave Lake basin, and the Mackenzie Delta Basin area.This contribution outlines the .stratigraphy and structure of the Basin area, and gives examples of present producing oilfield structures and stratigraphic traps.Part 1.-Regional StratigraphyIntroductionThe vast expanse of relatively undisturbed sedimentary rocks of western Canada has long been recognized as prospective territory to search for oil and/ or gas. This search in western Canada dates back before the turn of the century, but, considering the size of area to be explored and tested, the effort an<l money expended upon it, which, before the recent discovery of oil at Leduc, Alberta, appeared large and fruitless, now seems almost ridiculously small. A check-up of effort and money expended prior to and since the Leduc discovery would undoubtedly reveal that more wildcatting and development has taken place during the last two and a half years than during all previous years combined. The figures would astound not only the average citizen, but many within the industry itself."

"The Western Cape Mineral Processing Facility (WCMPF) is a collaborative educational initiative between the Departments of Chemical Engineering of the University of Cape Town, the University of Stellenbosch and the Cape Technikon. The primary objective of the WCMPF is to facilitate the education, development and graduation of suitably qualified engineering graduates and diplomates for the mining industry. The WCMPF consists of academics and Technical Officers in the Departments of Chemical Engineering of the three tertiary institutions. The Technical Officers are usually metallurgists, with several years of industrial experience. The main objective of the Technical Officers is to improve the practical education of mineral processing students. In addition, the Technical Officers are responsible for organising an annual mineral processing student field trip for students from all three tertiary educational institutions. In recent years the WCMPF has embarked on a number of additional initiatives aimed at improving the quality of mineral processing education. These include the development of several new pilot plant practicals, an initiative in pyrometallurgy, the introduction of novel ‘end to end’ or ‘integrated’ practicals and the use of mineral processing simulation packages to complement the practical training.The WCMPF has been functioning for well over a decade and, by virtue of this, might be considered a successful collaborative educational initiative. The WCMPF has played a key role in the education of over five hundred mineral processing graduates and diplomates. During this time period, the WCMPF has gained a body of internal knowledge which might be of benefit to other educational institutions, viz."

The Western Cape Mineral Processing Facility (WCMPF) is a collaborative educational initiative between the Departments of Chemical Engineering of the University of Cape Town, the University of Stellenbosch and the Cape Technikon. The WCMPF was established in 1989 with the aim of improving mineral processing education in the Western Cape. Since its inception the WCMPF has had a number of successes in this area, especially in improving the quality of mineral processing practical training. In addition, the WCMPF has played an important role in promoting liaison and interaction between tertiary educational institutions teaching mineral processing in the Western Cape. Over the past decade the WCMPF has played a key role in the education of over five hundred mineral processing graduates and diplomates. This paper presents an overview of the activities of the WCMPF and attempts to encapsulate the ‘lessons learned’ from over a decade of successful functioning as a collaborative educational initiative in mineral processing.

[Mr. Brown did not make his speech available for reprint.] Productivity is the Answer - Always Was; Always Will Be When Bill Balaz invited me to speak here this morning, he asked me to examine the three most important issues Consol will face over the coming decade. There are more than three. But the more I thought about that question, the more I realized all our issues come down to only one. As I reviewed the U.S. coal industry over the past ten years, and as I thought ahead into the year2000, one thing stood out. Not markets. Not government regulations. Not record tonnages. But productivity. The recent history of American coal is a tale of productivity improvement. It is a story that needs telling. And understanding. Not just for the good of the coal industry, but for the benefit of the American economy. Americans today do not appreciate the value of productivity growth. I don&apos;t say that lightly. As I review recent debate over American industrial competitiveness, as I look at certain legislative proposals, I see disturbing trends. It&apos;s not that anyone is against productivity per se. But many people seem to fear the very processes that enhance productivity. Twentieth century America enjoyed unprecedented growth in productivity. And in personal standards- of-living. Those two go together. This century has been one of change. Demographics. Education. And technology. Many new industries-cable television, computer services, telecommunications, for example-have grown from mere dreams to billion- dollar enterprises employing tens-of-thousands. And some older industries have declined. The nature of work has changed-from manual work to know- ledge work. From agriculture, to manufacturing, to services. In the mid-1960s. AT&T employed more than one million people. These were not high-paying jobs: telephone operators, linemen and equipment assemblers. Today, the successor Bell companies and their new competitors employ no more than a few hundred thousand. Because of automation. Because of enormous gains in employee productivity.

"DEFINITION OF THE REGION, ITS BOUNDARIES, AND PHYSICAL AND GE'OLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICSTHIS PAPER concerns the Western Cordilleran region, embracing most of British Columbia, the southern half of Yukon Territory and the southwestern most part of the District of MacKenzie. It excludes Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands, which are discussed in a background paper on the Pacific Continental Shelf. The region is bounded on the south by the northwestern United States, on the west by the continental shelf and Alaska, on the north by the front of the Ogilvie Mountains, on the northeast by the axis of the MacKenzie Mountains and on the east by the Rocky Mountain Trench.The region is dominated by two mountain chains that con tain icefields and glaciers: the St. Elias, Coast and Cascade Mountains in the west; the Selwyn, Pelly, Cassiar, Omineca and Columbia Mountains in the east. The Intermontane region between these mountain chains consists of lower mountains and plateaus. In the mountains, the region above the timberline and many of the steep valley-walls provide good exposures of rock, but these areas are subject to rockslides and landslides and in winter to snow avalanches. Much of the Western Cordillera was covered by ice-sheets at various times during the Pleistocene epoch. Consequently, the larger valleys in the mountains and much of the Intermontane region contain much glacial drift and alluvium and only limited exposures of rock. This same terrain in the Southern Cordillera, however, is the most favourable for agriculture. Parts of the region, particularly in the two mountain chains, are heavily forested. Elsewhere, the forest cover is less, with grassland prevailing in the south and tundra in the north."

THE Whale Lode occurs in the main range of the Rocky Mountains, Park County, Colorado Territory, at Hall Valley. It has been opened up and worked to some extent by the Whale Mine, situated some 11,300 feet above the level of the sea. The mine, with 700 feet of the lode on either side of the discovery shaft, is the property of the Hall Valley Silver-Lead Mining and Smelting Company. The adjacent country rock is a compact, fine-grained gneiss ; its general strike is about north and south, dipping steeply to the west. In the immediate vicinity of the mine, the strata are very nearly vertical. The gneiss incloses numberless veins of a reddish granite, in which the feldspar largely predominates over the quartz and mica, the latter oftentimes being scarcely perceptible. As a general rule these granitic veins seem to more frequently follow the lines of stratification of the gneiss than otherwise. They are of varying width, some large, some small; the larger are from 5 to 6 feet wide. Gash veins of feldspar and quartz are also of very fre¬quent occurrence. The general trend of the lode is about northeast and southwest, intersecting the country rock at about an angle of 45° to its stratification. It dips to the northwest at an angle of 65°. I am unable to state accurately how far this lode has been traced upon the surface, but it is at least well known to extend entirely through the mountain upon which the mine is situated, and is traceable over the ridge by a hollow extending for some distance along the surface, in which the lode crops out. This hollow in the surface rock has probably been formed through decomposition of the vein matter by atmospherical influences. The width of the crevice is variable, generally between 5 and 10 feet; the pay vein varies from an inch, or less, to 36 inches. The vein is generally accompanied both on foot and hanging walls by a whitish, semi-decomposed rock, composed of quartz and decomposed feldspar, and in some places-where the process of decomposition has not reached as advanced a stage-a light-greenish or black mica. This rock, therefore, is in places composed of all the constituents of gneiss, and is undoubtedly nothing more or less than the same in a decomposed condition. CONSIDERING the two great interests of to-day, in iron upon the one hand and steel upon the other, and recognizing with measurable distinctness the peculiar fitness of each for special services to which they are applied, the proposition to unite the two metals in combination, to bring into simultaneous use the peculiar advantages which each offers, has great attractions. The limited success which has been attained by trying to bring about such combinations of the two metals through the use of fluxes in welding, has led to the general adoption of the opinion that an effective union of the two metals is impracticable, or to the view that if practicable it would have but limited commercial value. Such opinions are, I think, premature and erroneous, and having gained some knowledge of the character and value of the "Wheeler process" for welding iron and steel without the use of fluxes, I submit the following observations and opinions of the matter for your information, with the hope of eliciting such a discussion of the subject as it may require. The principle of the invention is to bring the two metals simultaneously to a welding heat in one pile, and then to manipulate it.

THE White Knob copper-deposits are situated about three miles south of Mackay, on the Salmon River .branch of the Oregon Short Line Railroad, in Custer county, Idaho. An outline-map of this district is given in Fig. 1. The deposits have been known and spasmodically worked for many years, and a total of over 3.5 miles of tunnels, shafts and other workings has been driven with a view to their development. These extensive excavations have exposed the deposits sufficiently to permit a careful geological examination. The peculiar features which give special interest to this paper are the branching, free-like form of the ore-bodies; the absence of zones of secondary enrichment in the partly oxidized pyritic deposits, and the fact that while the deposits are associated in a general way with the contact of an eruptive rock with limestone, which it penetrates, the garnetization has taken place not in the limestone, as is the usual case, but in the igneous

White Pine Copper Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Copper Range Co. The property of White Pine is about 5 miles south of Lake Superior in Carp Lake Township, Ontonagon County, Mich. The new town of White Pine, adjacent to the company plant, is 18 miles south and west of the town of Ontonagon, and about 55 miles north and east of Ironwood, Mich. A diamond drilling program begun in 1937 to develop the orebody was carried on until 1950. During this period a test shaft, known as the Schacht shaft, was sunk on the orebody and approximately 8000 ft of development drift were driven. In an effort to solve the ore beneficiation problems, considerable metallurgical test work was done on ore extracted through the mine development. This work was conducted in a small pilot plant located in the mill of the Copper Range Co. at Freda, Mich.

THE Whitwell firebrick hot-blast stove, for furnace use, may be seen in its three, main stages of development in the accompanying drawings. Fig. 1 is the stove of 1869, the, year in which it was thoroughly tested at the Consett furnaces, England; Fig. 2, the stove of 1876 and 1877, in which it was intended to reduce the-cost by increasing the height; Fig. 3, the stove of 1880. Many modifications were made from time to time, generally in the direction of improvement, but the drawings illustrate the main features of progress. In the stove of 1869 the plan was to introduce the gas at A, and pass it up and down. between each alternate wall, the air in the reverse direction, passing in at B. The friction in this stove was so great, owing to the. restricted area of the passages and the many reversals of the gaseous current, that it was deemed imprudent to build the stoves higher than 28&apos; 6&apos;". Another reason was that the great importance of cleaning was carefully kept in view, and it was very difficult to operate any hand scraper even to this depth. For these reasons the 22&apos; X 28 1/2&apos; stove held the field for several years. A slight change made from this was to the 18&apos; X 40&apos; stove, where the height was increased, but the number of walls diminished. In this stove the friction was somewhat reduced, but so was the heating surface, and although it cost a little less it was not any better. The next important change, seen in Fig. 2, was by increasing the height to 60 feet and keeping the full number of walls in the stove. The heating surface and mass were much increased in proportion to the cost, and the friction decreased by alternating over and under two or more walls, instead of one, as formerly. This stove gave admirable satisfaction, but; although the proper doors were provided, it was very difficult to clean, owing to the long distance the scrapers had to traverse. THE following notes on the Whopper and adjoining mines in the Gunnison district of Colorado were made in the spring of this year. The time chosen for the author to visit the region was, unfortunately, the most unfavorable of an exceptionably unfavorable year. About the middle of May all the hill slopes, which at this period of the year are generally covered with pasture, were thickly covered with snow. The unusually large precipitation of this year caused local mountain torrents at every few hundred feet, which wore away the soft foothills into gulches, gouged great chasms out of the roads, and transformed miles of usually dry soil into dangerous quagmires. Travel was totally interrupted for weeks, except on horseback or afoot, and even then with great difficulty and some danger. The Whopper mine is situated on the Whopper Mountain, about two miles from the headwaters of Rock Creek, and on the right bank of that stream. The Whopper Creek flows into Rock Creek from the east, and, by a precipitous descent, offers excellent facilities for its utilization as a source of power. This stream, which pours past the picturesque Whopper Cabin .about thirty tons of water a minute, has a fall of 100 feet in 400 yards, and is said to be a stream of some size, even at the seasons of the year when-drought prevails. The Whopper claim extends down the bill a distance of about 250 feet to its intersection with the Whopper Creek (on the other side of which is a small tunnel on its extension called the "Teller ") and over the steep hill northwest to the limits of the claim about 1250 feet. The part of the mountain in which this mine is situated is remarkable for its splendid forest, the spruce, fir, and quaking asp covering the mountain-sides with a green growth of valuable timber. The distance from Gothic City to this mine is about eight miles along the valleys of East River and Rock Creek, and on the divide which separates them. The elevation of Gothic City is given from the engineer&apos;s notes as 9500 feet above sea-level, and the mean of several observations with a Beck watch-barometer made the elevation of Whopper Cabin (which is about fifteen feet above the floor of the Whopper upper tunnel) about 1250 feet above Skiles&apos;s Cabin in Gothic City. Those connected with mining, prospecting, or mining geology in northern Ontario are familiar with the fact that it is a comparatively unusual thing to have assayed a sample for which the assay report shows no gold. Values of 20 cents to 80 cents per ton, or even higher, are extremely common. Whilst contamination by fluxes, faulty manipulation, or a desire, on the part of the assayer, to sugar-coat the pill for the client, may account for 20 to 40 cent values at times, it is un1ikely that they would a1ways do so. Exonerating the assayer from being necessarily at fault, what can be the cause of such a widespread distribution of gold (and silver) in minute quantities- of a dissemination .that, in the writer&apos;s experience, and so far as he is? aware, is not met with on a simi1ar scale in other parts of the world? Explanations that suggest themselves are, that the dissemination is due: 1. To a very widespread auriferous minera1ization, post-dating (epigenetic) the formation of the rocks in which it occurs. 2. To a general syngenetic distribution of gold in the volcanic rocks of Keewatin age that form so large a part of the sections of northern Ontario that have been prospected.

"At a distance of 10 years from the first application of the Nazzano Method, the widening under traffic of a tube of an existing motorway tunnel was realized near Ancona, along the A14 Motorway in Italy. This paper describes the works for the enlargement with conventional method of the second tube, very close to that already widened under traffic.This enlargement was realized very fast, taking into account the advantages of some interesting technological improvements of the Final Design proved in the first tube.INTRODUCTION TO THE WIDENING OF EXISTING MOTORWAY TUNNELSThe widening of a twin-bore motorway tunnel usually considers the double option of creating a third bore as an alternative or closure to traffic of one of the two bores with the resulting reduction in the level of service for users.On the contrary, the extension in situ of a road, motorway, railway or underground tunnel in the presence of traffic, made possible by an inspired idea of Prof. Pietro Lunardi, enables the level of service of the infrastructure to be maintained without the need to resort to alternative routes to create new permanent or temporary bores, not always feasible because of the lack of the necessary space.This construction technique, known as the ‘Nazzano Method’, is part of the technologies refined and offered by the ADECO-RS approach to tunnel design and construction (Lunardi P., 2008) which is increasingly used in the world, leading to the industrialisation of tunnelling (meaning respect for the times and costs set out during detailed design) both in conventional and mechanised (through TBM) excavations.The first true experimentation of the ‘Nazzano Method’ was carried out between 2004 and 2007 to enlarge the two-bore ‘Nazzano’ tunnel (Italy, Milan-Rome A1 motorway) in the presence of traffic, widening it to house from two to four lanes in each direction (Lunardi P. et al., 2007). Following the success achieved in this first application, the Nazzano Method was strengthened considering all the possible suggestions arising from the previous experience and then taken up to enlarge the north bore of the ‘Montedomini’ two-bore tunnel (Italy, Bologna-Taranto A14 motorway), in situ and the presence of traffic."

This paper deals with an occurrence of radium ore near Wilberforce, Haliburton county, Ontario, upon which development work has recently been undertaken and which seems more likely to prove of commercial grade than any other deposit&apos; of radioactive minerals hitherto found in Canada. This occurrence is sometimes called the Richardson property, after Mr. W. M. Richardson, the discoverer, and will be so referred to in the present paper. Occurrences of radioactive minerals are not uncommon in eastern Canada, and a number are recorded in the literature. The earliest of such references is probably that in Geology of Canada, 1863, where is mentioned an occurrence of uraninite at Mamainse, on the east shore of lake Superior. The mineral was first described by J. L. Leconte, in 1847, under the name of coracite, and was said to occur in a two-inch vein at the contact of trap and syenite. Search for this locality in recent years has proved unsuccessful. Obalski, in 1894, mentions (1) the occurrence of uraninite at a mica mine near Murray Bay, Que. In 1903, Obalski records (2) tests made on this uraninite by Rutherford and the Curies and the determination in it of the then newly-discovered element radium. In 1901, he mentions (3) the occurrence of uraninite at the Villeneuve mica mine, on the Lievre river, and of samarskite at the Maisonneuve mica mine, in Berthier county.

Tuns truly remarkable machine was built on a preliminary scale in May, 1895. The first full-sized table was built by Mr. A. R. Wilfley, and was used in his own mill in Kokomo in May, 1896. The first table sold for installation was placed&apos; in the Puzzle mill, Breckinridge county, in August, 1896. The mill enthusiasts at first hailed it as the cure for all the ills that flesh is heir to in the milling line. A little later it was found to make losses which were serious, and on this account the table succeeded only to a limited extent in displacing the vanners of the gold-mills. Still later, mill-men in a number of districts throughout the country made special studies of the faults of the machine, and devised a number of ways of grouping supplementary machines to overcome as far as possible the losses, and at the same time retain the benefit of the extraordinarily large capacity accompanied by the production of clean concentrates for which the machine has become so justly famous. I hope to make an exhibit of some of these methods in an appendix to my book on ore-dressing which is now in preparation. These experimenters have not written up the subject, and if they possess all the facts they have not given them out for the benefit of the mining profession at large. The object of this paper is to obtain the facts and to pre¬sent them so clearly that their bearing can be seen by all. To this end two complete series-&apos;of tests have been planned. One (the present paper), to study concentration of galena in presence of quartz; the other (to follow shortly), to study concentration of chalcopyrite in presence of quartz. TAKEN in all its bearings there is, perhaps, no more interesting coal-field than that locally known and designated as " Wilmington," both on account of the superior qualities of its product as a house- hold and steam fuel, when compared with other Illinois coal, and its geological position. The territory underlaid with coal, to which this name was originally given, embraced a very small area, including only the south half of sections 31 and 32 (township 33 north, range 9 east) in Wilmington township, and sections 5, 6, 7, 8, 17, 18, 19, 30, and 31, with occasional outliers in sections 3, 4, and 9, and, possibly, in sections 20, 28, 29,30, and 32 (township 32 north, range 9 east) of Reed township, in Will County, comprising eleven square miles of workable coal within the known basin.
