"Over the past twenty years there has been an increased emphasis on fine grinding in the minerals industry. This spurred the development of a range of new fine grinding equipment in the 1990s. At that time, the Knelson-Deswik mill was developed in South Africa for the pigments industry.Knelson Milling Solutions currently offers a wide range of laboratory, pilot and production scale mills. These mills bridge the gap between traditional low speed vertical mills and the high speed horizontal mills (tip speed < 3 and > 15 m/s respectively). They are designed to run at tip speeds between 10 and 12 m/s and are capable of operating with very dense grinding media. The result is a power intensity that is higher than the low speed mills and overlaps that of the high speed mills. This allows the mill to be customized for a wide range of grinding applications.A case study at Aquarius Platinum’s Kroondal Mine shows that the Knelson-Deswik technology can produce a consistent product size despite feed variations. It also shows that the throughput was proportional to the slurry density at Kroondal. The case study identified increasing the slurry density as a process change that can increase throughput and reduce the specific energy consumption.INTRODUCTIONThe increasing complexity and finer grain sizes of modern ore bodies have increased the importance of effective mineral liberation in obtaining acceptable grades and recoveries (Jankovic, Valery and La Rosa, 2003; Lichter and Davey, 2006; Napier-Munn, Morell, Morrison and Kojovic, 1996). This trend has increased the significance of fine grinding technology because the input energy increases exponentially as the required product size decreases from 100 to 10 microns (Gao and Weller, 1993a).The US Department of Energy recently provided the context for the potential energy savings in the US Mining Industry (BCS, 2007). They reported that grinding consumes approximately 494 TBtu/year. This was over double the consumption of the second highest equipment category, diesel materials handling systems (211 TBtu/yr). The proportion of grinding energy allocated to fine grinding can only be expected to increase as finer ore deposits are mined. It is therefore critical that fine grinding efficiency continue to improve through the selection of appropriate equipment and the development of best practices for existing applications."

Some view quantitative risk assessment (QRA) as difficult to understand and complicated to use. They are comfortable with the proven reliability of quantity distance (QD) and question the benefits of applying QRA principles to explosive safety. In response to such questions, a review of the history of the American Table of Distances (ATD) provides insight to the strengths and weaknesses of the concepts behind QD tables. Additionally, a closer look at QRA features that are available today will reveal stunning capabilities and improved user friendliness not available previously. This paper looks at the early days of explosive safety, the use and limitations of QD, the meaning of risk in the context of QRA and discusses recent developments that knock down barriers previously hindering acceptance of QRA among regulatory agencies.

"In this paper, an outline is given for a theory of intelligent control (IC) of manufacturing processes (MP) based upon what all of them have in common: all MP's can be represented as distributed networks of sequential/parallel elementary ""lumped"" models; all elementary models are organized by definite input-output conditions, and by the set of constraints; all elementary models incorporate not only well defined physical knowledge, but also assumed physical knowledge, expert knowledge, expected knowledge to be obtained during the process from sensors, etc. This creates a hierarchy of elementary controllers coordinated by local coordinators of different levels up to a global coordinator. The latter verifies the adequacy of MP by using a holistic image of the process: depictogram. The structure of knowledge based controller is introduced, and the analytical/linguistic tools of control are presented. The concept entails a number of perspectives which are discussed in the conclusions.1. Moreover, it is now accepted that manufacturing is the key to the creation of wealth from a socio-economic point of view. Mining professionals recognize the need to continuously evaluate and refine mine planning standards and scheduling. We must examine our current reality, and evaluate the following: •How well do our planning standards represent the actual mining process? •To what extent do they support the requirements of the downstream mining activities? •How we apply them to operational management and control? In most operations, mine-planning standards are global averages. Little differentiation is madein quantifying key planning variables. Often standards used in the long-term, are applied to the short-term, and the standards and scheduling precedents are only reviewed occasionally. Mine-planning standards applied to production schedules are often only focused on the management of functional mining performance, and play no role in managing the requirements of down stream processing. Many mining operations are characterized by high levels of fluctuation, and typically incorporate a wide range of factors and adjustments to compensate for deviations from performance targets, in mining operations as well as for the other business areas. The reason for using global averages is because of a lack of understanding of the causes of deviations that occur through the process, and the impact that they may have on the performance of the business as a whole. Average standards and factors are often used to quantify the variability in a system. From these average values, measurement standards and performance targets are derived for the planning and execution environments. During the execution of a plan/schedule there will be deviation in actual performance and the planned ‘average’ standards. In reality the ‘average’ conditions seldom occur and the impact of variability and interdependency are seldom constant or predictable. The predictability of variability and interdependency is further complicated by the fact that mining conditions have a role to play in the actual production performance, and they too are variable. By developing the throughput knowledge of our production systems, we can better understand the nature of variability and the interdependency within the systems as well as the impact of interdependency between the links in our production chains. With this knowledge, planning standards and scheduling precedents can be better defined and sensibly differentiated. This will improve planning and management of ore utilization, mining production and the effectiveness of processing. As a result the business will be more stable and predictable and business performance will be improved. The purpose of this paper is to describe: •At a high level, the scope for refining and differentiation in mine planning standards, and incorporating geological and plant parameters into mine scheduling. This will improve planning and scheduling and the overall performance of the mine. Given our current level of scientific knowledge and the technological tools at our disposal we should be able to plan and schedule production so that we can manage pro-actively and improve business performance. In doing so we can also improve reconciliation and value tracking through mining and processing •The flexibility and functionality of the XPAC planning and scheduling tool that will enable a throughput management approach.

"Engineering design involves, in addition to numerical calculations, considerable amount of expertise and judgement. The expertise and judgement is required to conceptualize and idealize the problem, select a suitable mathematical model for the problem and to interpret the model results in terms of stipulated design constraints. In recent years, knowledge based systems (KBS) have provided the capability to integrate the qualitative experiential and expert knowledge with ~he quantitative knowledge for improved analysis and design of systems. A possible KBS architecture for mine ventilation system design was discussed by Ramani and Prasad · (1987). The expert system (ES) component of the KBS supports the analysis and interpretation phases of the ventilation design process with an algorithmic program used for the solution of alternate designs. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the data and knowledge needs for developing such a system and a formal means of their representation on the computer. A number of ES shells were evaluated to explore possible development and delivery environments for the system. A brief summary of this evaluation is also provided.INTRODUCTIONLuxbacher and Ramani (1979) have discussed the design process of mine ventilation systems and have provided the interrelationships that exist between ventilation, strata control, drainage and material handling systems and mining methods. They have also outlined the importance of correct analysis of the problem, choice of the right solution method and a rigorous interpretation of the solutions. The expertise required for analysis and interpretation phases was identified as the key element in developing effective and efficient ventilation system designs. Such expertise is embedded in the right choice of questions to be asked of the user as well as in directing the user to a wide array of alternative methods that may satisfy the design requirements. With advances in artificial intelligence applications in recent years, particularly expert systems, the integration of expertise into traditional mine planning and design algorithms has been facilitated. These planning and design aids, employing the integration of numeric and symbolic logic and called coupled systems, are powerful tools for engineers to tap the benefits of experts (Kitzmiller and Kowalik, 1985; Fenves, 1985). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the means of representing knowledge for the design of mine ventilation systems through the use of a coupled system. The three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of as-built industrial plant models plays an important role in revamping planning, maintenance planning, and preparation for dismantling during the lifecycle of industrial plants. Recently, the 3D reconstruction of existing industrial plants was conducted using laserscan data to make surveying processes more efficient. However, the current 3D reconstruction process from laser-scan data is still limited due to the need for significant human assistance. Although a great deal of effort has been made to efficiently reconstruct 3D as-built industrial plant models, the presence of objects?such as equipment, pipelines, and valves of different sizes and shapes?in existing industrial plants significantly increases the complexity of laser-scan data and makes automating the reconstruction process more challenging in practice. The purpose of this study is to propose a knowledge-based approach for the 3D reconstruction of as-built industrial plant models from unstructured laser-scan data. First, pipelines were extracted from laser-scan data based on surface curvature information and knowledge about pipelines&apos; sizes from existing piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID). Once entire pipelines were extracted, they were modeled based on skeleton features. Then, the remaining objects were clustered and grouped separately via the region grouping process. Afterward, clustered objects were retrieved and modeled based on global feature-based matching from the 3D database. Finally, the resulting model was checked to ensure that it was well-reconstructed according to the information regarding the relationships among objects abstracted from the existing P&ID. The preliminary results on actual industrial plants show that integrating knowledge into the reconstruction steps played an important role in the proposed approach and that this approach obtained accurate as-built industrial plant models from unstructured laser-scan data. The proposed approach could be successfully utilized to assist in many applications during the lifecycle of industrial plants.

Knowledge based applications are becoming important to Associated Manganese for efficiently dispatching ore of appropriate grades to customers on time. The G2 expert system shell has been used to develop blending and scheduling applications using a combination of object-oriented rule based, procedural, and heuristic approaches. The blending application, for example uses a heuristic approach for creating blends from thousands of small stacks of manganese ore of various grades and sizes, to meet customer specifications while fully exploiting the available inventory. Data capture and data warehousing have become important issues, and the Internet shows strong potential for distribution of pre-processed information.

Carbonate rocks are widespread throughout Ontario and provide raw material for more uses than perhaps any other rock type. The principal carbonate rocks that are used by industry in Ontario are Paleozoic era limestone and dolostone. Limestone is a sedimentary rock that is composed mainly of the mineral calcite (CaCO,) while dolostone, also a sedimentary rock, is composed mostly of dolomite [CaMg (CO,),l. The majority of the province's limestone and dolostone extraction occurs from Paleozoic era rocks located in southern Ontario. Calcite and dolomite are also found in Precambrian marbles, calcite veins and carbonatites, however, utilization of these rocks by industry has been less common. Calcite and dolomite-rich rocks are utilized for a wide variety of uses including raw materials for cement and lime manufacture, chemical and metallurgical stone, fillers and construction aggregates (Derry, Michener, Booth and Wahl and OGS 1989a). For some uses chemical and physical requirements are very important. In the manufacture of glass, for instance, the chemical requirements of source materials are very important and very stringent. In other uses physical criteria such as whiteness may be more important. Although carbonate rocks are quite plentiful within the province, deposits that contain high concentrations of calcite or dolomite are somewhat limited. For that reason, this paper focuses on deposits that are known to, or may contain, a high percentage of calcite and/or dolomite. The paper emphasizes potential sedimentary limestone and dolostone resources, as these are the carbonate rocks most commonly utilized by industry in Ontario.

The Kocks Rotation Mill - KRM- is an innovative elongation method for seamless tube production up to 4.5’’ diameter at production levels up to150,000 TPY. Using the principle of cross roll elongation, the machine rotates four rolls around the workpiece. A retained mandrel sets the wall thickness to a precision that exceeds existing industry norms. The KRM process performance has been truly excellent. Attributes include high billet weights, elongation of up to 9.5 in one pass, and eccentricity at or below +/- 5.0%. The flexibility of the process allows a wide range of steel grades to be produced at any wall thickness with little or no mill down time. Surface quality and yield are also greatly improved. Based upon the small foot print of the KRM rotor as well as the simple mandrel manipulation system, the installation cost of the KRM is significantly lower compared to other elongation methods. The reasonable cost of the machine, combined with greatly reduced foundation requirements, reduced ceiling height as well as simple utility connections reduce the initial investment for a new or upgraded mill. Finally, lower roll and mandrel costs allow high quality production at greatly reduces cost/ton.

Some examples of the results of research projects, conducted in the KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology are presented. Special attention is paid to mining machines and equipment, and improving work safety and comfort of miners in underground workings. From numerous scientific and technical achievements of the KOMAG Institute within the last 2 years, a few design solutions have been selected for a presentation. Some results of European projects on innovative solutions are described as well, highlighting KOMAG?s role in the national and international research area.

With the theme of û æUnderground Ore Handling SystemÆ, Kopanang Mine completed an extensive project on a specific system with technologies for the handling of ore from a dedicated drawpoint to the shaft system. The intended rail haulage tramming system had to be capable of handling the shaft design and Life of Mine (LOM) requirements. Kopanang is an AngloGold Ashanti gold mine situated in the province of the Free State in South Africa. In the Sotho language the name æKopanangÆ means to come together as a team. ItÆs an appropriate name given that 25 companies worked on this project. The future focus at Kopanang is to establish four mining levels between 3 to 4 km south-west of the shaft and two mining levels to the west. The mine has an expected life of almost 20 years and capital was approved in order to access this reserve to establish the infrastructure to handle the ore, hence this exclusive rail haulage tramming system of close to R40 million (SA rands), which took three years to construct. Apart from the fact that this system had to be capable of handling 6500 t per shift at a depth of over 2 km over a length of 3.2 km, some of the major considering factors were: safety, economic factors with improved labour productivity, efficiency and reliability, risk termination, and ergonomics. The system comprises two 20 t locomotives operating in a double header configuration from a dedicated draw point to a dedicated tip area for the reef and waste ore. With the objective of handling high speed and high capacity, this 200 t payload train is capable of running at 35 km/h powered from a 500 volt ac overhead line. Each loco consists of two 90 kW dc motors with ac/dc power conversion on the locomotive. For the system to operate at this speed, the rail system is constructed with Class 1 rails over the entire hauling distance. The tipping mechanism is unique and the span of 11 hoppers each with a load of close to 20 t is capable of tipping the pay load of 200 t in about 20 seconds hands free.

In 2014 the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) awarded a Design-Build contract to the joint venture team consisting of Skanska which is the managing partner; Kiewit Corporation and Ecco III (SKE) and HNTB as the lead design firm. The design build team employed methods to provide schedule savings and commercial benefits to the owner NYSDOT. This paper presents the design approach and construction methods used to accelerate drilled shaft installation supporting the main span foundation for the cable stayed bridge. The drilled foundation contractor Underpinning and Foundation Skanska, a division of Skanska was responsible for assisting with design, budgeting and construction of the drilled shaft foundation construction. As part of the Request for Proposal (RFP) bid process, Alternate Technical Concepts (ATC) was encouraged by the NYSDOT. The JV team proposed an ATC which involved a scaled production shaft testing method to simulate the ultimate load level, commonly referred to as the “Chicago Method” was used in the rock socket employing the Osterberg Cell (O-Cell) testing procedures. To the authors knowledge this was the first NYSDOT project where this approach was utilized on a Demonstration/Production installation to validate construction procedures and load bearing capacities. Construction procedures, challenges and solutions are discussed in detail. Upon completion of successful drilled shaft construction, concrete integrity is verified using two methods – Cross Hole Sonic Logging (CSL) and Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP). A comparison from the contractor’s perspective is provided. Finally the drilled shaft rock socket is tested to ultimate end bearing values while rock socket side shear stresses are not exceeding the service level loading. Lateral load test was also a RFP requirement; the test arrangement and performance are discussed in detail as well. The Kosciuszko Bridge location poised unique geotechnical challenges on many levels shifting towards an extreme boundary of parameters encountered in New York City Area for drilled shaft construction. The JV team and specialty drilled shaft contractor actively participating in the shaft design and construction practice coordination and working with NYSDOT yielded a successful foundation solution which provided cost and schedule savings to the project.

BECAUSE of its magnitude, and the type of occurrence, the deposit of boron minerals in the Kramer district, Kern County, California, is unlike any other in the world. Discovery of this vast deposit has brought about many changes in the borax industry, so a discussion of the geology, and the occurrence, would not be complete without a brief history of the development of the borax industry. Until the discovery of boron minerals in the desert regions of California and Nevada some seventy years ago, borax was imported from Tibet and India, principally for medicinal purposes, at almost prohibitive prices. Following the discovery of commercial deposits of boron minerals in California and Nevada, and the subsequent development of new uses for borax and boric acid, the consumption has steadily increased until today borax is used in some form or other in every household.

This paper presents the details of the Kramer tunnel project in the Federal State of Bavaria, Germany. This road tunnel, which has been under construction since December 2019, is the key component of the western bypass of the town of GarmischPartenkirchen. Once completed, it will relieve the town’s central district from enormous volumes of traffic. The contractor is the joint venture named ARGE Kramertunnel consisting of BeMo Tunnelling and Subterra. The whole project will be completed and handed over to the project owner, Staatliches Bauamt Weilheim, in 2023. The opening of the entire bypass section including the tunnel to traffic is planned for 2024. The tunnel, with a total length of 3,609 m (2.24 miles) and an estimated cost of EUR 178 million (incl. VAT), is designed as a single-tube, double-lane structure with one traffic lane for each direction of travel. The safety issue that exists for single-tube tunnels is solved by a parallel escape tunnel passable for vehicles. All tunnels and ducts are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). In order to reduce the geological risk for the owner, the escape tunnel was supposed to be completed before the design process for the main tunnel ever began. The exploratory tunnel was awarded to a competitor with an separate contract.

This paper presents the construction of the ventilation shaft for the single-tube, doublelane Kramer tunnel. The project is located in the Federal State of Bavaria, Germany. This road tunnel, which has been under construction since December 2019, is the key component of the western bypass of the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Once completed, it will relieve the town’s central district from enormous volumes of traffic. The contractor is the joint venture named ARGE Kramertunnel consisting of BeMo Tunnelling and Subterra. The whole project will be completed and handed over to the project owner, Staatliches Bauamt Weilheim, in 2023. The opening of the entire bypass section including the tunnel to traffic is planned for 2024. The tunnel, with a total length of 3,609 m (2.24 miles) and an estimated cost of EUR 178 million incl. VAT (US-Dollar 201 million), is designed as a single-tube, double-lane structure with one traffic lane for each direction of travel. The safety issue that exists for singletube tunnels is solved by a parallel escape tunnel passable for vehicles. For tunnel ventilation, an intermediate shaft has been designed with a depth of approximately 90 m (295 feet) and an inner diameter of 4.5 m (14.8 feet). All tunnels and ducts are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). The geological and hydrogeological conditions, the change in the profile (from round to square geometry), and also the shaft being located at a high elevation presented a demanding technical and logistical challenge. The site arrangement with the pit bank was located in a cut, the slopes of which had to be stabilized with shotcrete and soil nails. This excavation was carried out from the fall of 2020 to the beginning of 2021 because construction operations had to be completed outside the nesting period of protected birds.

Not since 1917 has a foreign company developed a standalone, grass roots gold mine in Russia. With. Russia&apos;s political changes of the late 1980s, development of mineral prospects once again beckons foreign investors. In 1990, Cyprus Amax began aggressively searching for such an opportunity. Early in 1997, production will commence at the Kubaka gold project located in the Russian Far East, near the Arctic Circle. The Kubaka project is a 1,750-tonne per day open-pit operation that will produce more than 300,000 ounces of gold per year. This paper discusses the challenges of locating such a prospect, doing business in Russia, developing supply lines, identifying work force capabilities, gaining government approvals, securing financing, arranging for gold sales and ultimately building a facility in this arctic region.

ABSTRACT: The Kupol project, located in Far East Russia, treats a high-grade, free-milling ore containing 25.5 g/t Au, 298.3 g/t Ag, and 0.5% pyrite,with a P70of 53 microns. Most of the gold occurs as elec-trum and the silver is predominantly present in the forms of acanthite, stephanite, pyrargyrite, andproustite. The mill reached the design throughput of 3,000 tpd six months after start-up. AKnelson con-centratorrecovers10.4% gold and 0.5% silver. Leaching (14.5 hours pre-treatment and 116 hours cyanidation)of gravity tailings is performed with the CANMET Enhanced Leach Process (CELP),using only 490 ppm NaCN (cyanide consumption of 1.1 kg/t). The precious metals are recovered by counter-current decantation and the Merrill-Crowe process. Calcium hypochlorite destroyscyanide and thiocyanate. Overall, gold and silver recoveries for 2008 were 95.4% and 85.6%,respectively (2.8% and7.5% higher than targets). In the first eight months of 2009, gold and silver recoveries were 95.0% and82.6%, respectively. By August 2009, the mill processed 1.42 million tons of ore with production of 1.1 million ounces of gold and 11.3 million ounces of silver. CELP performance was not affected by changes in feed grade and ore mineralogy. Additional modifications to the leaching strategy allowed further reduction in cyanide consumption and effluent treatment costs.

Le but de l&apos;entreprise est de produire annuellement six millions (6 000 000) de tonnes de concentré d&apos;hématite (oxide de fer) titrant 66% Fe au concentrateur de Lac-Jeannine a partir d&apos;un minerai d&apos;une teneur moyenne de 33% Fe, extrait de la mine de Fire Lake. Ce concentré est ensuite achemine à Port-Cartier et alimente I&apos;usine de bouletage.Les installations minières de Sidbec-Normines sont situées a trois endroits différents : la mine à Fire Lake, le concentrateur à Lac-Jeannine et l&apos;usine de bouletage à Port-Cartier. La mine de Fire Lake se situe à 83 km de la ville de Gagnon et à 100 km du concentrateur de Lac-Jeannine. Une route provinciale relie la ville à la mine et au concentrateur. Le minerai est acheminé de la mine au concentrateur par chemin de fer et le concentré est transporté par train sur une distance de 309 km à l&apos;usine de bouletage de Port-Cartier."
