Application of Proposed Revised Standards 57.11-50 to Mines Surveyed 3.1 Subparagraph (a) 1 "Each mine shall have at least two separate and properly maintained escapeways from each working place to the surface which are so positioned that physical or environmental damage to one will not lessen the effective¬ness of the other, and which meet the requirements of travelways and man hoisting standards These escape¬ways shall reach to within 1000 feet horizontally or 300 feet vertically of each working place " 3. 1. 1 Discussion This section will deal with the 1000 and 300 feet distance requirements, Section 3. 5 will deal with the "environmental damage" provisions. During the course of the mine surveys, it became obvious that one mine's 1000 foot distance was nowhere near equal to another' s --not in the actual distance but in the time required to traverse that distance. This -Ls true for the 300-foot requirement as well. The most obvious example is that one could traverse down a 300-foot raise much faster than climbing up the same distance. The temptation is strong to recommend that the distance requirement be changed to travel times instead. However, this approach would unfortunately lead to a lot of subjective evaluations. Having a time requirement for an entire mine evacuation (Subparagraph 6) is one thing, time requirements and the requisite inspection proce¬dures for each working place are quite another.

In order to search for a more economical and effective roasting additive for extracting vanadium from stone coal and solve the question of the disposal of PVC waste, PVC waste was proposed as a novel roasting additive to enhance extraction of vanadium from stone coal and realize the comprehensive utilization of resources. By adding this roasting additive, the leaching rate of vanadium reached 94.5% under the conditions that the PVC waste addition was 10 wt%, the roasting temperature was 800 °C, the roasting time was 1 h, the sulfuric acid concentration was 15 vol%, the liquid-to-solid ratio was 1.5 cm3 /g, the leaching temperature was 95 °C, and leaching time was 4 h, which increased by 8.4% compared with that of blank roasting. The thermodynamics calculation showed that the decomposition reaction of mica was performed easier with the participation of HCl produced by pyrolysis of PVC. Meanwhile, The SEM-EDS and aperture test analyses demonstrated that more cracks and voids appeared in the roasted sample by roasting with PVC waste, which could facilitate the release and extraction of vanadium. Additionally, the TG-DSC analyses indicated that PVC could provide large amounts of heat for the roasting process to promote the decarbonization and roasting efficiency of stone coal because of its high calorific value.

RECENTLY the head burner at a brick. plant with over 40 years' experience said that he had burned brick by guess for over half his lifetime and had used pyrometers for 2 1/2 years but hoped that he would never have to burn kilns without pyrometers again. The ceramic engineer in making a special study of the burning of clay ware and the effect the heat of the kiln has on color and vitrification is also rapidly placing the burning of clay on a twentieth-century basis. Clay ware may be divided into various groups, brick and drain tile; sewer pipe; firebrick; and pottery, which, in turn may be subdivided into special classes. As nearly as the analysis of the clay type of kiln, etc., will allow, there are practically the same problems to solve in burning in all of the processes or operations. The underlying objective is the same, namely the production of the best grade of ware under the most efficient and economical manufacturing system. The principal problem in the production of clay ware is the burning off of the kilns. The most modern steam shovel may dig the clay and the most advanced types of pug mills and wire cut machines or molds of various kinds may be installed, but unless the drying and burning of the ware is successful, all of the previous operations will be useless. On this final operation depends the entire result of the plant. In reality, burning of all. clay ware is purely a heating proposition. The kilns, or furnaces, should be so designed as to give equal distribution of heat. Consequently, the problems of design and construction of kilns to produce equal distribution of heat require serious consideration, as do also the questions of heat control and draft control. IT is likely that among most races, owing to the ease of finding and working clay, the making of clay utensils was learned earlier than the molding of metal implements. The ancients made good pottery and durable brick in kilns that wasted fully one-half the heat and spoiled fully one-fourth of the ware; and, taking the clayworking industry as a whole, we are doing the same today. The chemical and physical changes involved in the burning of clay are so many and vary so much with the composition of the clay that it is not surprising that the rule-of-thumb methods so commonly employed fail to give uniform results. In its passage from plastic clay to the vitreous or stonelike character the mingled minerals and accidental organic impurities of which the clay is blended must pass through four stages, the second and third usually overlapping, and the fourth often beginning before the third is complete. These stages in their order with the rising temperature are drying, dehydration, oxidation, vitrification. In the first part of the drying stage, usually accomplished in part outside the kiln, the water mixed with clay is dried out at temperatures not much exceeding the boiling point of water. In the later part of this stage, within the kiln, the hygroscopic water, absorbed from the air is expelled at somewhat higher temperatures, this stage being known as watersmoking. Some clays are very sensitive to temperature during the drying stage and if the temperature exceeds 100°, the ware becomes checked. Other clays may be dried more rapidly without danger. In down-draft kilns, the draft is slight during the watersmoking stage and the water driven off from the top rows condenses on the ware in the bottom of the kiln, with the result that high temperatures are likely to be reached at the top of the kiln before the bottom is fully dry. The lag in temperature of the bottom persists to the second stage in spite of the better draft then prevailing.

THE manufacture of gas masks by the Chemical Warfare Service, U. S. A., required preparation of the carbon used in the canisters. The largest plant for the production of this carbon was situated at the works of the Astoria Light, Heat and Power Co., at Astoria, N. Y.; this paper will deal1 with the pyrometry equipment at that plant. Commercial charcoal was found unsuitable for use in gas masks because of its low power of absorption and its poor resistance to abrasion. The best raw material for the production of carbon was found to be coconut shells, but any kind of nut shells or fruit pits were used when sufficient quantities of coconut shells could not be obtained. The shells were first carbonized in retorts, the carbon was then crushed and screened between 8 and 16 mesh, and finally submitted to a special heat-treatment in air; steam treatment was later substituted for treatment in air. The production of gas-mask carbon on a commercial scale was begun at Astoria about Aug. 1, 1917. Temperature control was essential during the initial carbonization of the shells, as well as during the air or steam treatment, and pyrometers were installed for this purpose. The installation and maintenance of all pyrometry equipment was done by the pyrometry department, consisting of an officer in charge, an assistant, and two men. A special pyrometry laboratory was maintained in which all repairs were made.

(written discussion *).-This paper is particularly interesting to me, because it gives data on a much mooted question, viz., the serviceability of Le Chatelier (platinum-platinum-rhodium) thermocouples under severe industrial conditions. It has always been supposed that platinum-platinum-rhodium thermo-couples, used at high temperatures under strong reducing conditions, would not give long service and were subject to rapid volatilization. The fact, however, that the carefully kept records indicate that a little more than 3 gm. out of more than 830 gm. was lost over this considerable period, shows what kind of service can -be obtained from platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples,, when properly installed, and well cared for. While the writer has no actual figures on the loss of weight, etc. of platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples under service, he was told, by the man in charge of pyrometers at a large industrial plant in which over 400 platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples were installed in furnaces doing various kinds of heat-treating work, that the average maintenance cost, for materials alone, including platinum-platinum-rhodium wires and protecting tubes, was 27 c. per furnace, per month:

Microscope, electron microprobe and x-ray diffraction have been used to provide quantitative evaluation of products from the mill, smelter, refinery and other metallurgical processes. Phase compositions and their quantities are necessary for an adequate understanding of the various products obtained throughout an operation and in laboratory testing. By careful evaluation, important information can be gained in improving recoveries and increasing grades at various stages of processing. Four case histories are discussed in this paper. Quantitative microscopic counting techniques are applied to mill products to determine degrees of locking and liberation of the economic minerals. Rapid, but accurate evaluation aids the metallurgist to develop or improve the grinding and flotation circuits. In the smelter, the identification and quantification of the phases are important for predicting reaction mechanisms and kinetic trends. Mineralogic techniques have been applied to conventional smelter products, and to those obtained in laboratory tests for newly developed innovations to smelting. Small, but important, values of gold occurrences in ore are difficult to determine. Evaluation of gold usually requires special separations into various mineral concentrates, followed by assays and mineralogic determinations of the products. Numerous occurrences of solid solution constituents can be treated as by-products, but often they are deleterious to metallurgical treatment. Most solid solution problems can be unraveled by the mineralogist's tools.

The nature and distribution of radiation-induced defects (RIDs) in quartz from the Maw Zone, a yttrium- and rare-earth-element-enriched sandstone breccia complex exhibiting intense hydrothermal alteration, have been investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. EPR spectra show that detrital quartz in sandstone, from five diamond drill holes intersecting the Maw Zone and one above the crest of the so-called Quartzite Ridge, contain only background-level RIDs, indicating that Ubearing fluids were absent in this area. However, close to the sandstone-basement unconformity, in hole WR-194 immediately west of the Quartzite Ridge, the concentration of RIDs in detrital quartz is significantly above background but at least an order of magnitude lower than those at the Key Lake and McArthur River deposits. Widespread drusy quartz at the Maw Zone, which signifies intense hydrothermal alteration, is associated with hematite-, sulfide- and carbonate-bearing mineral assemblages, which exhibit complex crosscutting relationships. EPR spectra of drusy quartz in all three types of mineral assemblages are low in RIDs as well, supporting the EPR evidence that fluids at the Maw Zone did not carry significant U. These EPR results suggest that, in spite of intense hydrothermal alteration and favorable structural geology, the Maw Zone is unlikely to host any significant U mineralization. Moreover, this study shows that the EPR technique is potentially a useful exploration tool, capable of determining whether individual alteration zones in the Athabasca Basin were associated with U-bearing fluids or not.

"There are numerous analytical applications of scatter-emission and/or absorption spectroscopy applied to liquids and solids in the temperature range of 0 to 350°C. In this paper an all-silica fiberoptic probe is described which is useful for spectral analyses from 0 to 1600 K and can be used in harsh chemical environments. The probe has been used for Raman spectral analyses of many molten salt and solid material systems to 1000°C. It has applications for such studies at higher temperature ranges. The instrumentation required along with the demonstrated and proposed applications of the all-silica probe are presented and discussed.IntroductionThere are many kinds of scatter-emission spectroscopies that are of value for analytical measurements. Fluorescence, reflectance, arc or spark emission are descriptors for some of these. Raman scatter spectroscopy is also quite a useful technique for analytical measurements.In Figure 1, we give a simplified explanation of the Raman effect. If one shines monochromatic light into a sample, light may be absorbed, exciting the sample to some virtual state. We know from experience that almost all of the light is re-emitted in the same wavelength range. This is called Rayleigh or Mei scattering and is designated in the figure by the arrows in both examples that point up and down from the same lower energy state. A very small percentage (the order of 10-4%) of the monochromatic light is re-emitted leaving the sample at a vibrationally-excited state. Thus, this light is at a distinctly lower energy compared to the exciting radiation. This is called a Stokes shift and is represented in the left-hand example by an arrow descending to a more energetic vibrational state. If the sample is not at a temperature of absolute zero, some of this vibrationally excited state will be thermally populated. That portion of the sample still absorbs and re-emits exciting radiation as Rayleigh scattered light, but a small percentage of the exciting light is re-emitted as the sample relaxes to the lower vibrational state. The energy of this light is of higher energy and is called an anti-Stokes shift, depicted in the example to the right. Notice that the energy separation of the Stokes or anti-Stokes shifted emission from that of the exciting radiation is the same, and expressed in ~cm-I. The intensity of either shifted emission is a function of the population of the vibrational energy states; therefore, the ratio of the intensity of Stokes to anti-Stokes signal varies with absolute temperature. We will come back to this point later."

CONSIDERABLE attention has been directed in recent years to methods of electric prospecting other than the conventional direct-current tech-niques. It has been extensively recognized that electrical data of a more general nature than that possible by direct-current methods might be useful in geophysical studies. To this end, a number of different types of electric currents have been employed, such as single-frequency alter-nating currents, square-topped periodic current waves,4 periodic surges of a less specific nature,8 and suddenly applied direct current.1,2 Yet, to the author's knowledge, little analysis of these different types of driving currents has been made from the standpoint of network theory to determine just what type of currents would give the most useful data, and, most important of all, to determine the relation of the data taken by one method to those of another. Without touching on the actual theoretical problem of how currents flow in the earth under specified boundary conditions, some very useful information can be obtained from the study of the fundamental integral equations of electrical networks, throwing light on the problem not ordinarily appreciated by the field worker. Some manipulation of the standard network equations will be made, with the sole purpose in mind of developing expressions leading to practical results. Suppose that four points in the earth have been located and it is wished to obtain the most useful type of electrical data by inserting current into two of them and measuring the potential developed between the other two. The first problem that arises is that of which pair of the four shall be chosen as current grounds. In the direct-current case, where only steady potentials are measured, the selection is of little consequence, but as soon as currents varying with time are used at the current grounds, a new effect arises. The fact that a varying current is flowing in the current-carrying conductor between the current grounds means that magnetic and electric fields varying with time will be produced

"Geochemical stream-sediment reconnaissance can be a useful exploration tool from the point of view of rapidly and cheaply evaluating the mineral potential of an area. This is particularly true of rugged and mountainous areas such as are found in Gaspé. For the past two years, SOQUEM has been carrying out such surveys over favorable geological regions in the Appalachians of northern New Brunswick and Gaspe. To date, about 4,000 square miles of terrain has been systematically covered by reconnaissance geochemistry. Jeeps have been used as a means of transportation in the easily accessible areas and a helicopter equipped with a winch has been used to lower crews into the more difficult-to-reach regions. Such surveys have been successful in finding metallic mineralization which otherwise might not have been detected.Electronic computation of analytical information has been used to construct regional metal maps, rolling mean maps and residual metal maps. These maps have helped in evaluating anomalies, in relating the regional geo-chemistry to the regional geology and in comparing the distribution patterns of metals. To date, some 30,000 stream-sediment samples have been collected from the Gaspe region and analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn and Mn. These analyses are being subjected to computer analysis."

It is generally known and accepted that the efficiency of the blast furnace process, expressed by the symbols specific production and coke consumption, is influenced by a large number of variables connected to the type of burden, the alloy contents of the produced iron and the conditions of production as composition and preheating of the blast, the furnace heat losses and the possible use of fuels added on the tuyere level. It is furthermore obvious, that the coke consumption of the process will be influenced by specific production which could be said to be the result of two counter-acting influences. With high production, realized through intensive blowing, the passage time of the ore through the furnace is shortened leading to a decrease of the indirect reduction taking place in the upper part of the shaft within the temperature range of 300 to 1000°C. Simultaneously the external heat losses (constant in time) will be smaller calculated on each ton of iron and the resulting change in coke consumption will be the effect of both those influences. It is certainly of interest to be able to predetermine the effect of those variables before a change in the production practice is carried out.

"In a mining environment, high quality seismic event catalogs are often useful in interpreting local stress states and identifying areas with elevated ground control risk. Installation, operation, and maintenance of local/in-mine seismic networks, however, may be prohibitively expensive, and mine operators may not anticipate the need for seismic data until unusual mining conditions arise. If regional, generally public, seismic instrumentation could be used to reproduce the results generated by local/in-mine instrumentation to an acceptable degree of fidelity, it would be a valuable and inexpensive tool for mine planners and ground control engineers.In this study we apply subspace detection—a non-traditional seismic event detection technique—to data from a sparse, regional network. The process is employed to identify mining induced seismicity (MIS) from an underground coal district. The results are compared to a seismic event catalog produced by a local seismic array operating within the permit boundaries. Additionally, we analyze the performance of two different stations of the same sparse, regional network in identifying blasts at a surface coal mine for which we have a detailed blasting log. In both cases data from stations between 10 and 60 km away from mining activity are used. We also explore the trade-offs between the number of detections and the number of false positives, which is influenced heavily by detection thresholds and the number of stations used in the process.For the surface mine we are able to identify more than 90% of the production blasts documented in the blasting log. We also find that the detected blasts from each of the four active pits produce waveforms similar to one another. The results are not dependent on source-receiver distance, and by requiring detections to occur on both stations the number of sure false positives is reduced to zero. In the underground mining district we identify between 30% and 75% of the events detected by the local array, depending on the acceptable number of false positives and the source-receiver distance. We also find many events that were missed by the local array, showing that regional subspace detection can usefully augment traditional local catalogs. Moreover, subspace detection can provide an estimate on event location and classification using data from as little as one seismic station."

Corrosion and product contamination have been difficult problems for extractive metallurgy industries in the U.S. because of the highly active chemicals used. During the past twelve years, other industries, particularly the chemical and paper segments, began to combat this problem with some degree of success using newer materials of construction, including reinforced plastics. These materials are made by combining a corrosion resistant thermosetting resin with a glass fiber reinforcing material and are used to con¬struct hoods, stacks, blowers, tanks, towers, pipe, and equipment of the most complex configurations. For service in contact with aggressive chemicals, the equipment is most often fabricated with the bisphenol-A fumarate polyester resins because of their resistance to corrosive attack. Data from both laboratory work and case histories of field applications are presented-for many common chemicals found in extractive processes. Information is also presented concerning design standards and recommended construction procedures

"Basic theoretical grounds of the methods applied for crushing and grinding parameters determination according to international standards are given in this paper. Statistical data about crushability and grindability research are shown. The potential relationship between the values of Fred Bond Work indices and John Starkey indices (Crushing index, Ball mill index, Rod mill index and AG/SAG index) are discussed in this paper. In order to establish correlation between the crushability and grindability indices the analysis of over 2 500 tests for 165 deposits located in different parts of the world was performed. The relationships among different types of energy consumed for crushing and grinding were determined. A method for preliminary estimation of energy consumption in semiautogenous + ball mill grinding circuit is suggested for its application in preliminary technological solutions development and technical-and-economic assessment."

"An air dense medium fluidized bed separator is an efficient dry process for the removal of undesirable gangue material from run-of-mine coal. Its cleaning performance depends on a variety of operating parameters that are interrelated in unknown, complex ways. A literature review showed that these parameters' effects had been experimentally investigated using a traditional one-variable-at-a-time approach, which is highly inefficient and sometimes misleading because many of the parameters often interact with each other to alter the overall equipment performance. Also, it is realized that the interrelationship among these parameters can have a significant effect on equipment performance. Therefore, to correctly evaluate the effects of individual parameters as well as their interactional effects on the separation performance of an air dense medium fluidized bed, we conducted a scientific study based on response surface methodology. Empirical models for two key response variables, namely, product ash and combustible recovery, were developed and subsequently used for identifying an appropriate operating region to achieve optimum separation performance. Furthermore, the optimum performances predicted from the empirical models were validated against experimental data. Preliminary results show a strong interaction among the operating parameters investigated in this test program.IntroductionFluidization is widely applied in industry for its various useful features. In the coal industry, it is used in the air dense medium fluidized bed (ADMFB) separator for the beneficiation of run-of-mine coal. In this separator, a medium is created by suspending fine magnetite particles in an upward air flow, and this pseudo-fluid is used as the beneficiation medium, with the lighter coal particles floating to the medium’s surface while heavier particles sink to the bottom. This separation technique had been receiving a significant amount of attention worldwide in recent times for its specific advantages of low operating cost and less restriction for small capacities (Luo and Chen, 2001; Sahu et al., 2009; Dwari and Hanumantha Rao, 2007; Van Houwelingen and de Jong, 2004), but it is still not a well-established industrial practice because of the availability of efficient wet processing technology. However, with a revival of interest in the dry beneficiation of coal, in general, and ADMFB, in particular, there is once again a concerted effort to improve the efficiency of the ADMFB process, and successive improvements have been made to make this process a competitive and viable option. The existing literature reveals that most of these research efforts had been essentially focused on the identification of a single parameter that has a key influence on separation performance, without taking notice of parameter interactional effect. For example, Luo et al. (2004) proposed a pressure drop number to distinguish separation performance without considering the bed height and gas velocity, which are intimately related to this proposed pressure drop number."

It is known from earlier and recent research that mechanical properties of intact rock like uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Young's modulus (E) and Poisson's ratio (?) are influenced by shape deviations of test specimens as deviations from the ideal cylinder. That impact can be significant at certain level of inaccuracy of specimen preparing, and it should be objectively evaluated and controlled in testing. The effects of intact specimens side straightness, ends flatness, ends parallelism and perpendicularity to the specimen axis, on UCS, E, and ?, measured in several actual ways during laboratory compression tests, were determined by previous research on 90 homogeneous specimens of limestone. In this paper, we subject these new experimental results to Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to model the mentioned dependence, to identify significant connections of variables and to evaluate the conclusions obtained directly from experimental phase. This study indicates how the responses of the model (outputs) – parameters UCS/E/??of limestone rock depend on factors (inputs) – parameters of specimen shape deviations like flatness R, parallelism P and perpendicularity O, assuming modern test machines with spherically seated upper platen. Starting from general RSM model with three factors (R, P, and O), we investigated the multiple linear regression models of specific mechanical property (UCS, E, and ?). Using the NCSS program ("NCSS 2004 and PASS 2005") in several steps, final models with very high coefficients of determination were developed for properties with the most evident effects of specimen shape deviations: nine models for strength UCS and UCS50 (equivalent UCS for specimen with 50 mm diameter), and three models for ?L (Poisson's ratio calculated from axial deformations measured on the entire specimen length). These statistical models with their response surfaces further strengthen and confirm the results and conclusions from the experimental phase. The critical values of R, P, and O are established using an additional statistical analysis to determine the lower and upper engineering limits. These findings set the basis for the new eligibility criteria for specimens of limestone (and similar rock with UCS about 100-150 MPa) in further testing of strength and deformability.

Manipulation of pouring temperature is an efficient way to produce different microstructural features. In order to characterize the microstructure of rheocast billets due to different superheats of 615-695 °C, the parallel plate compression method was employed. Foundry 356 Al-Si alloy with different morphologies of primary a-Al particles were tested at different initial pressures of 4,8, 11,2 KPa, The resulted strain-time graphs were further treated mathematically to calculate viscosity of SSM billets. The interrelationships of viscosity, the microstructure and primary phase flow during compression are discussed, It is shown that the dendritic primary a-Al structure has the highest viscosity number which is almost three orders of magnitude greater than those for globular morphology, The current research have, for the first time, shown the validity and reliability of "parallel plate compression viscometry" method in characterizing microstructural evolution of Rheocast SSM billets.

Three conditions are required for a risk to be realized: (1) a source of risk (i.e., hazard) must exists (2) some process must take place which will lead to the exposure of people, animals, and/or the environment to the hazard: and (3) as a result of the expense, undesirable effects are produced on the people, animals, and/or the environment. A comprehensive risk assessment addresses all three of the conditions through the following four steps: (1) risk source (hazard) characterization, (2) exposure assessment, (3) dose-response assessment, and (4) risk estimation. Although the terminology may differ, the overall approach of financial, public health, and environmental risk assessments is the same (National Science Foundation, 1985).
