INTRODUCTION IN the study of metallographic specimens in the electron microscope, there is need for a method of locating the same field in both the light microscope and the electron microscope. This need arises chiefly from the fact that in the electron microscope the magnification and degree of resolution are so much higher, and the field so much smaller than in the light microscope that it is often difficult, if not impossible, to identify positively what is being observed. The difficulty is increased by the fact that, because a transparent film replica of the metal surface must be used in the electron microscope, micro-constituents can be identified not by their color but only by their texture and contours. For these reasons it is desirable to obtain a series of photographs showing the same field in both microscopes in order that the appearance of common microstructures and micro-constituents in the electron microscope may be identified and catalogued for future reference. The need for a method of locating the same field in both microscopes arises also when it becomes desirable to enlarge in the electron microscope for more detailed study a particular interesting structure observed in the light microscope. Using the standard polystyrene-silica1,2 replica technique, in which the silica film replica is fished from the ethyl bromide on a 1/3 in. diam 200-mesh specimen screen, the possibilities of locating a particular area on the film in the electron microscope are rather remote. The desired structure may be obscured by the wires of the specimen screen or unrecognizable at the high magnification. A solution to the problem would be provided if a specially designed specimen screen, containing an opening which could be absolutely identified and quickly located in the electron microscope, could be fastened to the silica film replica in such a position that the desired field on the specimen would be located at the identifiable opening in the specimen screen. The design for such a specimen screen, a method for producing it, and a technique for fastening it to the silica film replica are described below. DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The Specimen Screen A simple design for a specimen screen containing an opening easy to identify and locate in the electron microscope is one with two lines of openings at right angles in the form of a cross. Such a screen is shown in Fig I. The opening at the center of the cross is identified easily and can be located quickly in the light microscope and in the objective image of the electron microscope. The specially designed specimen screens for this work were produced in quantity by electroforming. "Research has been conducted during the past year on a study to correlate respirable coal mine dust characteristics with worker positions and coal seams. The first characteristic of respirable coal mine dust which has been addressed in the correlation study is respirable dust mass concentration. In fulfillment of this objective, two mines operating in different coal seams have been selected for respirable dust mass sampling on both longwall panels and continuous mining sections. At present, sampling has been completed on the longwall panel operating in the first mine, and one half of the planned sampling has been accomplished on the continuous mining section.The first mine sampled is operating in the Pittsburgh coal seam. The average mining height is approximately 78"" with an average of 8"" of bottom shale being mined. The mine is primarily a longwall mine, and continuous mining machines are used to support the longwall.Figure 1 shows the layout of the longwall panel which was sampled. Intake air is coursed via the track heading up to the headgate area. The air splits at the headgate. Approximately 20,000-30,000 cubic feet of air per minute (CFM) is used to ventilate the longwall face and about 5,000-10,000 CFM is routed down the belt entry. Substantial leakage across the gob was noted during the sampling period. An average of 1800 CFM per 100 feet of face leaked through the shields into the gob from #1 shield to #112 shield. A substantial amount of leakage also occurred between the #1 shield and the solid rib of the headgate development panel. The path of the air used to ventilate the panel is shown with arrows in Figure 1. Direction of air flow was opposite to the coal moving direction on the armored face conveyor.A double-drum ranging shearer is used on the face to cut a 30-inch web of coal. Normal practice is to cut from the tailgate to headgate with the leading drum raised and the tail drum lowered for cutting bottom. After reaching the headgate, the shearer is reversed and both drums are lowered for a clean-up pass. The last 40 feet of face on the tailgate is cut on the clean-up pass.The shearer is equipped with 2 banks of 4 water sprays each and 2 large sprays on the headgate end and 1 bank of 4 sprays on the tailgate end. Additionally, sprays are located above bits on the cutting drums. Actual cutting speed was approximately 14-18 feet per minute, depending on conditions.The cross sectional area for air flow on the face was approximately 60 square feet before a pass was mined and 80 square feet after a pass was mined but before the shields were advanced. The cross sectional area at the shearer was about 35 square feet.The condition of both the tailgate and headgate of the panel was good with no signs of significant roof problems. The roof conditions along the face during the sampling period were variable. At times, as much as 3 feet of drawslate fell from the roof for a span of as much as 40 shields. Generally, however, relatively local areas of falling roof were encoun-tered, usually limited to a 10-20 shield span when appearing.Ten days were spent gathering respirable dust samples on the longwall panel. Mine Safety Appliance (MSA) sampling units equipped with 10-mm nylon cyclones, pre-weighed MSA PVC filters, and constant-flow DuPont pumps were used to obtain thesamples. The pumps were calibrated at a 2 liters-per-minute flow rate. The 10-mm cyclone was selected for classifying total dust into the desired respirable fraction in order to obtain ""legally defined"" respirable dust samples for detailed physical characterization."

Sonic travel time logging of exploration boreholes is routinely used in Australia to obtain estimates of coal mine roof rock strength. Because sonic velocity logs are relatively inexpensive and easy to obtain during exploration, the technique has provided Australian underground coal mines with an abundance of strength data for use in all aspects of ground control design. However, the technique depends upon reliable correlations between the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and the sonic velocity. This paper describes research recently conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) aimed at developing a correlation for use by the U.S. mining industry. At three coreholes in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and southern West Virginia, sonic velocity logs were compared with point load tests for a broad range of coal measure rock types. For the entire data set, the relationship between UCS and sonic travel time is expressed by the following equation, where UCS is in psi and t is the travel time of the P-wave in microsec/ft. UCS = 468,000 x e-0.054t (1) The r-squared value for this equation is 0.87, indicating that a strong correlation between sonic travel time and UCS can be achieved with this technique. The paper also addresses the steps that are necessary to ensure that high-quality sonic logs are obtained for use in estimating UCS.

EVIDENCE has been accumulating in recent years, in part from the work of the Coal Research Laboratory, that coals belong to a family of natural polymers and that even in complex reactions the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. This point of view leads to the expectation that if a series of coals were subjected to a closely controlled set of experimental conditions the results obtained should be related to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. The data accumulated over the past 10 years by the Bureau of Mines in its "Survey of Coke-, Gas-, and By-Product-Making Properties of American Coals," in what has come to be recognized as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) carbonization assay test,1-12 offer an unusual opportunity to check this conclusion. The present paper reports an analysis of the data on the first go coals and coal blends-including coals numbered I to 55b, inclusive -which have been carbonized according to a standard procedure at intervals of 100°C. from 500° to 1100° in either or both 13 or I8-in. cylindrical retorts." In Table I are given the name of the seam from which the sample was obtained, the analytical data used, and the reference to the original publication of the Bureau of Mines. The coals range in fixed carbon from 46.2 to 79.0 per cent, in volatile matter from 15.4 to 41.3 per cent, in ash; from 2.1 to 15.9 per cent, in moisture from o.8 to 19.7 per cent, and in total sulphur from 0.40 to 4.44 per cent; therefore the entire gamut of bituminous coals is represented. The petrographic nature of the individual coals is not considered in the following analysis, although both "normal" bright coals and splint coals are included in the samples studied. For information on the petrography of the coals and for further information characterizing the coals the original papers should be consulted. Although the coals that are included extend over the whole range of bituminous coals, they do not cover this range entirely adequately. In particular, only 13 of the go coals have moisture contents greater than 3 per cent. This concentration at low moisture values means that the effect of moisture, which is an important factor, cannot be determined with as much certainty as would be desirable. All the coals were not tested at every temperature and in both retort sizes. Only the first 30 coals were tested at 1100°, and only about 50 at the other temperatures, except at 900°, where nearly all of them were included. In the accompanying tables the actual number of observations entering into each correlation is given. In this study equations are given for calculating analyses, yields, and properties of coke and by-products from the coal analyses. To decide whether these equations are satisfactory it is necessary to know the accuracy with which these quantities were measured in the assay tests.

One of the most urgent needs in the field of coal combustion is the ability to predict the performance of a coal from knowledge gained from small-scale tests. Numerous types of analyses and tests are conducted on coal, including the proximate and ultimate analyses, heating value, varieties of sulphur, ash analysis, ash fusion temperatures, free swelling index, petrographic analysis, and Gieseler plasticity. The Illinois Geological Survey has made an intensive study of the value of these tests for judging the performance characteristics of the coal as actually utilized. To date, three reports 1 2 3 have been is- sued, and another is being prepared. The present paper briefly summarizes some of the results found in the studies.

Vertical magnetic surveys have been made over about 3, 150 miles of the crystalline area of east-central Alabama. A contour map (100-gamma interval) showing regional magnetic anomalies has been prepared (scale 1:250,000) from data points located at quarter-mile intervals on all public roads. Small one- and two-station anomalies were eliminated, leaving only areally extensive anomaly features associated with regional geology. The regional gradient was "filtered" from the basic data and the resulting magnetic configuration compared to the regional geology. Regional lines of vertical magnetic intensity trend northeast and follow the structural framework of the area. Correlations can be made between a large number of geologic and magnetic features. The strongest regional anomalies are associated with the Goat Rock, Bartletts Ferry, Towaliga, and Brevard fault structures. The Inner Piedmont area is characterized by a broad regional high. The magnetic values of the northern Alabama Piedmont grades gently northwestward, disrupted occasionally by elongate highs and lows associated with amphibolites or granites. Scattered throughout the Piedmont are anomalous areas of high magnetic intensity; some are related to magnetic-bearing rocks, and some Indicate possible mineralization. The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) has been studied for a long time as a non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technology for inspection of concrete structures. Currently, the most widely used technique for interpreting GPR data of concrete bridge decks is the one that based on the amplitudes measured at various interfaces such as asphalt-concrete, top rebar, or slab bottom. The assumption behind this technique is that a sound concrete deck should have the same reflection amplitude at these interfaces while any low number would indicate some sign of deterioration. Unfortunately, this assumption is not completely valid in most cases. As a consequence, the reported test results usually do not reflect real condition of concrete bridge decks in question. The main goal of this paper is therefore twofold: (1) to discuss the limitations of the amplitude analysis method, and (2) to propose a new model that interprets GPR data of concrete bridge decks. The model methodology is based on the comparison of GPR A-scans between two inspections, using the so-called correlation analysis. The results, indicated by the correlation coefficients, are then employed to develop a contour map that estimates different levels of deterioration. The model is then implemented to a case study in order to illustrate its methodology.

Based on relative CO2, N2, and 3He contents, geothermal systems of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, TVZ, can be subdivided into two major groups: arc-type systems, associated with andesitic magmatism along the eastern boundary of the TVZ, and rift-type systems over its western parts. The highly increased N2/3He, CO2/3He and CO2/Cl ratios of the former are ascribed to entrainment of large proportions of volatiles of subducted, marine sedimentary origin. The largely rhyolitic, rift-type magmas are assumed to have formed from volatile-depleted, residual melts. Correlations of Cl and CO2 with heat contents suggest that formation of the two types of source magmas involves mixing of two end member components: a low-volatile melt with a heat/Cl ratio of 25 Ml/mol (0.7 MJ/g), and a low Cl vapor with a heat/CO2 ratio of 5 Ml/mol. On the basis of these values, the heat associated with andesitic magmas is found to be carried in close to equal parts by both vapor and melt; for the rhyolitic melts the proportion contributed from the vapor is only about 2%. The heat/He ratios of the rhyolitic source magmas for the rift-type geothermal discharges from the TVZ of 0.12¦0.05 Ml/pmol is within the range of 0.05 to 0.2 Ml/pmol of the upper mantle. The higher heat/3He ratios for the arc-related magmas of 0.4¦0.2 Ml/pmol are likely to be due to the high proportions of heat carried in the form of a separate, low 3He vapor phase derived largely from subducted sediments.

Geotechnical monitoring plays an important role in the detection of operational safety issues in the slopes of open pits. Currently, monitoring companies offer several solutions involving robust technologies that boast highly reliable data and the ability to control risky conditions. The monitoring data must be processed and analysed so as to allow the results to be used for several purposes, thereby providing information that can be used to manage operational actions and optimize mining plans or engineering projects. In this work we analysed monitoring data (pore pressure and displacement) and its correlation with the tension and displacement of the mass of an established failure slope calculated using the finite element method. To optimize the back-analysis, a Python language routine was developed using input data (point coordinates, parameter matrix, and critical section) to use software with the rock mass parameters (cohesion, friction angle, Young’s modulus, and Poisson’s ratio). For the back-analysis, the Mohr-Coulomb criterion was applied with the shear strength reduction technique to obtain the strength reduction factor. The results were consistent with both the measured displacements and the maximum deformation contours, revealing the possible failure mechanism, allowing the strength parameters to be calibrated according to the slope failure conditions, and providing information about the contribution of each variable (parameter) to the slope failure in the study area.

When the Trelleborg Divisions of Boliden Allis and Mineral Processing Systems (MPSI) merged, a unique opportunity occurred for two independent mill fabricators to compare design pro¬cedures and the research upon which they were based. Several semiautogenuous (SAG) mill analyses are compared using Boliden Allis and MPSI methods. The differences and similarities are then used in a correlation of critical stress definitions and the acceptable design and inspection criteria. Given the opportunity to compare the total philosophies and methods of several companies involved in the design and fabrication of grinding mills, it was important to first develop the comparison method and ground rules. One option was to compare analytical methods by details such as numerical techniques and accuracies. However, this option was discarded in favor of a more general approach. The question that was finally posed was in two parts. Given an identical mill requirement: • What would be the difference in the analytical design result, and to what aspect of the analytical process could this difference be attributed? • What would be the difference in approaches to obtaining the final hardware in subcontracting, both in specifying and Quality Assurance surveillance? By using this comparative approach, questions of relative conservativeness and reliability would automatically be answered.

IT has long been accepted that blast-furnace practice varies to some degree with the coke used. While the qualities desirable in iron have been known for some time, the qualities in coke that produce such iron have not been established. There are no objective standards for blast-furnace coke, which is usually described in general terms, as good or bad. Many experienced operators believe that coke cannot be measured objectively except by using it in the furnace, noting the result, and labeling the coke according to furnace operations. This is admittedly unscientific, and besides is useless for the two main purposes for which a measure of coke quality is needed: (I) to produce the best possible coke from the coals and equipment on hand; (2) to test new coals and determine their value for blast-furnace coke. In seeking such an objective measure, much work has been done on tumbler tests, shatter tests, sizes of coke, porosity, specific gravity, reactivity or combustibility and other tests, but as yet very little has been published in which conclusive correlations have been established between such objective measures and furnace operation. In our study of the problem during the past 8 years we have developed no new measures of coke quality, but we have collected data that are presented here in the hope that they may assist in further work, so that at some future time there may be developed such positive measures. The purpose of this paper is to show that there are variations in coke and that such variations do influence the operation of blast furnaces. At the same time we must remember that there are variations in blast-furnace operation and it may be the blast furnace that is at fault. This correlation of coke properties with blast-furnace operation will be worked out in the following steps: I. Discussion of a period when a change in the coke resulted in an increase in efficiency on one furnace and a decrease in efficiency on another. 2. Adaptation of the inefficient furnace to the available coke so that normal efficiency was restored. 3. The use of radial distribution: a discussion of the effect of size of ore layer in adapting blast-furnace operation to the coke. 4. An example of a change in size of coke and the detrimental influence on the production of one furnace. 5. An example of a change in size of coke, together with manufacturing data, to show why it changed, the conclusion being that coke is a product with an optimum value. 6. Illustration of the fact that coke has different optimum values on two furnaces, with discussion on adaptation of operation so the optimum values will be the same. 7. Limitations of the use of screen tests as an objective measure of coke quality. 8. Importance of uniformity in coke. "Small-punch tests and determination of fracture toughness JIC were conducted at 4 and 77 K on new cryogenic JN1, JJ1 and JK2 austenitic stainless steels, after isothermal aging. Equivalent fracture strain ?qf determined by measuring the reduction of thickness in the small-punch test specimen. A linear dependence of JIC on ?qf was found in these new materials. Regression analysis of experimental data produced the following linear relation JIC = 1304.1 ?qf + 8.09 [kJm-2]. An analysis of present work relation was pursued on the basis of material properties and evaluation method of he. Results showed that the slope value has a strong dependence on material yield strength and JIC evaluation method. This linear relation is useful for the evaluation of fracture toughness JIC, measuring the equivalent fracture strain ?qf by means of small-punch test. Thus it can be useful for assessing the degradation of fracture toughness in small areas such as, the heat-affected zone in welded components.IntroductionCryogenic structural materials for superconducting magnets of fusion nuclear reactor are required to possess a good combination of strength and toughness. The mechanical properties are required beyond the capability of conventional austenitic stainless steels [1]. New cryogenic JN1, JJ1 and JK2 austenitic stainless steels were developed by the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) [1]. The structure of superconducting magnets is constructed by welding of 200 = thick plates of these steels, which are solution treated at high temperatures and then water-quenched to avoid intergranular precipitation. However, the welding process involves heating and cooling [2], which cause microstructural changes in both base metal and weld. In this heterogeneous microstructure, it is important to estimate the fracture toughness of these materials at cryogenic temperatures. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the effect of aging process on the fracture toughness behavior of these new steels. To determine the cryogenic fracture toughness, the elastic-plastic JIC value has been co=only used [2]; however, the specimen size is much larger than heat-affected zones in welded components. Small-punch (SP) testing method, employing miniature specimens, has permitted to evaluate the fracture toughness behavior at different temperatures in different nuclear reactor materials [3,4]. Mao et al. [5,6] and Misawa et al. [7] found a linear relation between JIC value and equivalent fracture strain ?qf, determined by SP method in non-ferrous alloys and ferritic steels at room temperature and austenitic stainless steels at 4 and 77 K, respectively. So that, this kind of correlation would be very useful to assess the fracture toughness JICe values by means of SP test in small zones of welded components."

A partir de corpos de prova de uma chapa de aço baixa liga NBR 6656 grau LNE 26, realizou-se a caracterização microestrutural, levantamento do perfil de dureza ao longo da espessura da chapa, ensaios de tração monotônicos, cíclicos de fadiga e análises fractográficas. Concluiu-se que, nas extremidades da espessura da amostra, o valor da dureza é maior, indicando que quando a chapa foi laminada as superfícies em contato com os rolos de laminação sofreram encruamento, aumentando a dureza nessa região. A microestrutura encontrada e o grau das inclusões presentes na amostra são compatíveis para o material, bem como as propriedades mecânicas monotônicas, que estão de acordo com a especificação. Por meio de ensaios de fadiga de baixo ciclo, encontrou-se uma boa correlação entre as propriedades monotônicas e cíclicas do material para a proposição da equação de Basquin, considerando-se dados seguros, quando utilizado os primeiros vinte ciclos do ensaio de fadiga para estabilização de cada corpo de prova. Verificando-se a seção transversal da fratura do corpo de prova, observa-se que o mecanismo de falha do material ocorreu a partir do aparecimento de trincas na interface ferrita-cementita com propagação transgranular até a fratura final.

Os controles dos processos de cominuição estão normalmente associados à redução de granulometria e geração de superfície específica, usualmente utiliza-se peneiramento para medição de granulometria e permeabilímetro de Blaine para superfície específica, estes métodos são largamente utilizados para este fim. O método on line por difratômetros a laser também pode ser empregado para estas medições na indústria, como se trata de uma tecnologia recentemente adaptada para ao processo de Pelotização, foi necessário validar o equipamento e determinar equações de correlação de leitura com os equipamentos existentes. O trabalho consistiu em realizar uma série de amostragens cujas amostras foram analisadas no equipamento industrial a laser, em seguida analisadas em laboratório. As equações de correlações obtidas foram inseridas no equipamento industrial de medição on line por laser tornando a leitura familiar aos obtidos pelas análises de laboratório, onde foi possível garantir confiabilidade para tomadas de decisões.

O estudo de ligas livres de Pb envolvendo o emprego de junções metálicas sob altas temperaturas tem recebido atenção especial, sendo desenvolvidas novas ligas com qualidade e desempenho adequados. Ligas Bi-Ag consistem em alternativas promissoras para a substituição das ligas de solda contendo Pb para tais aplicações, por isso devem ser melhor caracterizadas sob o aspecto de estruturas brutas de fusão. Assim, o presente trabalho objetiva investigar a liga hipoeutética Bi-1,5%Ag (%em peso) solidificada unidirecionalmente sob regime transitório de fluxo de calor. Será analisada a influência dos parâmetros térmicos de solidificação como velocidade de solidificação (VL), taxa de resfriamento (?) gradiente de temperatura (G) na microestrutura e na evolução de dureza da liga citada. Para determinação do perfil de dureza, foram realizados ensaios de dureza Vickers. Para obtenção e caracterização das microestruturas presentes no fundido Bi-1,5%Ag, fez-se o uso da microscopia ótica e da fluorescência de raios-x. Uma estrutura de dendritas facetadas de Bi circundadas pelo eutético Bi-Ag prevaleceu ao longo do lingote Bi-1,5%Ag. Verificou-se um aumento gradativo dos espaçamentos dendríticos primário (?1) e secundário (?2) à medida que a distância da base refrigerada foi aumentada. Em geral, os valores de dureza diminuíram para maiores valores de ?1 e ?2.

As fibras lignocelulósicas representam vantagens econômicas, técnicas e ambientais em comparação com as fibras sintéticas, como fibra de vidro por exemplo, quando se considera as alternativas de reforço aos compósitos. A fibra natural usada no presente trabalho é a fibra de eucalipto, que é largamente cultivada em território brasileiro. Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar uma análise estatística da correlação entre o diâmetro e a densidade da fibra de eucalipto. Para isso, foi aplicado o método de Weibull. O diâmetro foi obtido por meio de medições em projetor de perfil, enquanto a densidade utilizou determinações precisas da massa e do volume de fibras. Placas ósseas metálicas são componentes utilizados para correção ou cura de fraturas ósseas. Em se tratando de implantes ortopédicos, é fundamental conhecer o comportamento dos materiais quando submetidos a esforços mecânicos. Para isto ensaios são realizados baseados em normas técnicas, que no caso específico de placas ósseas, são utilizadas as normas ASTM F382 e ABNT NBR 15672-2. Na execução do ensaio para determinação da rigidez à flexão, de uma placa óssea, pode existir o efeito da flexibilidade do dispositivo de ensaio. Para verificar a magnitude desse efeito, foram realizados três ensaios de flexão estático e um ensaio de flexibilidade do dispositivo de ensaio, onde o ensaio foi interrompido ao final da fase elástica. As propriedades mecânicas da placa foram avaliadas, aplicando a correção da flexibilidade do dispositivo. "After the non-destructive testing is completed, the data must be compiled, evaluated, and interpreted. During this process, the data may indicate that there is an anomaly warranting further investigation, which may eventually be determined to be a flaw or defect. The definitions of an anomaly, flaw, and defect can be described as follows (after Amir, 2002):Anomaly - Any irregular feature identified in the NDT graphic results. An anomaly may be due to the testing instrumentation (such as noise), to the means used to perform the test (e.g. access tube debonding in CSL) or to the shaft itself. It is the responsibility of the NDT practitioner to gather and analyze all relevant data and try to resolve every anomaly before it is declared a flaw or defect.Flaw - Any deviation from the planned shape, size and/or material of the shaft.Defect - A flaw that, because of either size or location, may detract from the shaft’s intended performance or durability. The geotechnical engineer and the structural engineer are jointly responsible to decide which flaw comprises a defect.This section describes the process of evaluating the data, determining if an anomaly exists, and if so, deciding whether the anomaly is actually a flaw or a defect. If the anomaly is determined to be a defect, its effect on the performance of the shaft must be evaluated, and if necessary, the can be re-engineered, repaired, or replaced."

Corrosion is a chemical or electro-chemical attack on a metal by the surrounding medium, and it can be stated in general terms that a non-corrodible metal possesses that property either because there is no chemical action between it and the medium, or because the medium reacts quickly with the metal to produce a thin protective coating.When iron or steel is attacked by dilute mineral acids, for example, the products of the reaction are soluble and the formation of a protective film cannot take place; on the other hand, rusting produces a porous film which flakes away and offers little protection to the underlying metal. However, when chromium is alloyed with iron, its resistance to corrosion is improved because the films produced on such alloys become more adherent and tenacious as the proportion of chromium is increased.
