SYNOPSIS A back-analysis procedure based upon 35 mm photography was developed on a laboratory scale for the pur¬pose of determining the percentage of oversize particles known to be present in heaps of fragmented rock. Eight simple blends of crushed stone containing varying percentages of oversize on a 1:40 modelled scale were examined. Simulated test conditions for the following were subjected to the photographic study: (1) a bench heap, (2) the surface exposure of a partially excavated heap, (3) a gravity-sorted surface as occurs on an apron dump, and (4) four quadrant views of an incrementally built conical heap of rock fragments. The best back-analysis determinations were obtained from (4), the cone, over all eight blends of fragments. The mean error was within -0,16 per cent of the true value, with a range of ± 1,872. This was for oversize contents of 5 to 20 per cent where a minimum 25 per cent of the photograph area was processed by digitizer. The worst results were from the apron dump at - 1,462 per cent for a mean error of ± 4,174 per cent. The intermediate results were from the undisturbed bench at -0,186 per cent with a mean error of ±2,862 per cent.

When explosives are detonated in the borehole where there is an air gap between the explosive charge and the borehole of inner wall, the shock cave in an air gap travelling ahead of the detonation front sill be generated. This shock wave is called the precursor air shock wave (PAS). The explosive is precompressed by the PAS, and as a result of that the detonation failure occur on occasion. This phenomenon is well known as channel effect.

Paper presented at conference and first published in preprint volume of: Risk assessment in the extractive industries, held in University of Exeter, 23-24 March 1994. London: IMM, 1994. Large, unpredicted ground movements resulting from open cast or underground mining present risks to the safety and economy of extractive industries. As large, sudden failures are usually preceded by small displacements at a much slower rate, the detection and monitoring of these minor changes to the ground surface provides a means of assessing the risks. It is recommended that a visual approach is often preferable to surveying or fixed instrumental measurements. An optical system has been devised, incorporating a 35 mm camera, which allows an immediate comparison on site between a colour transparency taken on a previous inspection and the scene it represents. The observer fuses the transparency stereoscopically with the directly viewed scene. The impression is close to that of normal vision except that differences in detail which have occurred since the transparency was taken are immediately obvious, enabling a qualitative assessment of changes to be made on site. If repeat photography is required it can be taken with exactly the same alignment and coverage. The two images are then available for office analysis using simple micro-photogrammetry

The prime objective of geophysical exploration is to promote the economical and rapid dis-covery of mineral or oil deposits of commercial value. To a few this concept as applied in min-ing may signify the direct discovery of ore-bodies, but to the geophysical engineer this latter Idea is one of the most insidious and detrimental misapprehensions which he has to combat. The destruction of this annoying obstacle to the progress of geophysical exploration reveals the kernel of truth behind it, that the exploration geophysicist has for the better part of two decades been concerned primarily with the discovery of mineral formations favorable to the occur-rence of commercial ore. There is a very real distinction here, since geophysical methods are capable of discovering certain mineral formations such as sulphide bodies or quartz veins, but are totally incompetent to predict whether or not they constitute ore; that is. whether or not they contain minerals of economic value in the amounts requisite to repay extraction. The art of geophysical exploration is now, however, rapidly outgrowing these early limita-tions. The rate of this growth will in large measure depend on the recognition by the mining industry of the fact that geophysics can play a role far wider and more important than it usual-ly does now, in guiding the future exploration and development of mineral deposits. It is my own firm conviction that as time marches on we will see the methods of applied geophysics turned more and more to the delineation of both minor and major structural features. The outlining of such features having a bearing on the probable loci of mineral deposition will be of inestimable value in guiding the development of a mining district. RECENT experiments in reflected sunlight photography in mine shaft's' and. slopes in the McAlester, Oklahoma, coal-mining district have been so satisfactory as to indicate that such a method has definite scientific value. The entrances to abandoned deep shafts and slopes on Choctaw and Chickasaw Indian coal lands in Oklahoma are being filled or bulk-headed by the U. S. Geological Survey under Public Works Project F. P. 63-C&C. Inasmuch as these mines may be reopened at some future time when there is a demand for coal, H. I. Smith, Chief of the Mining Division, suggested that photographs of deep shafts would be of value. Such photographs would show timber details and the general condition of the walls. Photographic records of the exact status of shafts when filled will facilitate operations in reopening.

"Cadmium sulfide (CdS) in the form of thin films is an interesting material because it has a large variety of applications ranging from photovoltaic to luminescent devices. N-type CdS is usually used as a window layer in the heterojunction CdS/CdTe thin film solar cells. A review of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra ofn-type CdS thin films prepared by different techniques was performed. The effects of different dopants and impurities and the effects of temperature and deposition parameters on the PL spectra were discussed. Annealing in different atmospheres causes the changes in material structure and phase change from cubic to hexagonal phase which can be detected through the variations in the PL spectra. CdCh heat treatment improves the cystallinity of the films and enhances the exciton peaks and the green band in the PL spectra.IntroductionThin CdS films deserve attention because their expected gap emission lies very close to the highest sensitivity of the human eye. Thus, one might assume that thin CdS films are an appealing host for photonic devices [ l]. They have been used in a lot of applications including electronic and optoelectronic devices [2]. Thin films ofn-type CdS are widely used as a window layer in heterojunction solar cells such as CdS/CdTe solar cells. Doped and undoped CdS thin films can be obtained by different techniques such as; spray pyrolysis (SP) [3], chemical bath deposition (CBD) [2, 4], pulsed laser deposition [5, 6, 7], laser ablation [l], thermal evaporation [8].Several experimental techniques have been used in order to study semiconductor defects. In particular, photoluminescence (PL) has been shown as a powerful and sensitive tool in examining the crystal quality of polycrystalline thin films. PL can be used in the detection of defects which are radiative active. These defects can also act as traps in the transport of carriers [9]. The photoluminescence (PL) of thin film CdS is strongly influenced by the unbalanced stoichiometry, which is typical for CdS and is in general evoked by a Cd surplus. With increasing Cd content, the emission spectra move far below the gap to the red spectral range. Besides stoichiometry problems, independent of the material deposited, the PL properties of thin films depend on surface features and the influence of the interface between the film material and the substrate [10]."

"Cadmium telluride (CdTe) is a very interesting material that has many applications. Thin films of p-type CdTe can be used as the absorber layer in the heterojunction CdS/CdTe thin film solar cells in which n-type cadmium sulfide (CdS) works as the window layer. A review of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra ofp-type CdTe thin films prepared by different techniques was performed. The presence of defects and impurities such as oxygen and chlorine influence the PL spectrum. Copper and other dopants change the PL spectra and enhance the defects band. Chemical-heat treatment especially with CdCh is known to improve the quality of CdTe thin films because it decreases the Cd vacancies and quenches deep traps, so it enhances the PL signal. A discussion of chemical-heat treatment especially with CdCh, the effect of the ambient atmosphere, and that of the measuring temperature is performed.IntroductionCadmium telluride (CdTe) is a II-VI compound semiconductor that has a cubic zincblende (sphalerite) structure with a lattice constant of 0 A4~11]. Other than all of II -VI semiconductors, CdTe can be made both n- and p-type. But due to self compensation it is not easy to get p-type CdTe films [2]. Polycrystalline CdTe thin films are interesting because they have a lot of applications. Most of the problems associated with the use of these films are attributed to inhomogeneity, self-compensation, and the difficulty of forming a stable and lowresistivity ohmic contact [3]. CdTe technology has been established for a large number of applications, including solar cells, optical and nuclear detectors, and thermal- and radiationimaging devices [3]. At present, the highest demonstrated conversion efficiency for a CdTe based heterojunction (ID), with CdS as a window layer, is 16.5% [4, 5]. CdTe thin films can be prepared by different experimental techniques, such as thermal evaporation [l], electrochemical deposition (ED) [3], close-spaced sublimation (CSS) [3, 4, 6], physical vapor deposition (PVD) [3], chemical molecular beam deposition (CMBD) [7], and close space vapor transport (CSVT) [8].The objective of this paper is to make a review of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra ofp-type CdTe thin films prepared by different techniques and discuss the factors that influence the PL spectra. The composition of the film is very interesting in determining its PL spectrum. Different kinds of defects, impurities and dopants have their finger prints in the PL spectrum. Deposition techniques and deposition parameters such as the deposition temperature and ambient atmosphere also have their influence. Heat and chemical treatments which are known to improve crystallization and reduce the defects change the PL spectrum."

"CdS/CdTe solar cells were built by depositing a 200 nm layer of Sn02:F on glass substrates by the spray pyrolysis (SP) technique, a 500 nm CdS:In layer by the same technique and a 1-1.5 µm CdTe layer by vacuum evaporation. The cells were CdCh heat-treated in nitrogen atmosphere for 30 minutes at 350 -.C. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra were measured at the CdS/CdTe interface for two cells with different values of the CdTe layer's thickness at temperature T = 60 K. A deconvolution peak fit was performed from which it is found that the peaks are characteristic of the solid solution CdSxTei-x· The parabolic relation that relates the bandgap energy with the composition was used to estimate x, where xis [S]/([Te]+[S]) and [Te], [S] are the concentrations of Te and S atoms respectively. The results show that the interface is smooth and the change of the bandgap occurs gradually.IntroductionCdS/CdTe heterojunctions represent a combination of materials promising various applications, and for solar energy conversion in the first place [1]. In photovoltaic cells the CdS material acts as a wide bandgap window. Direct bandgap CdTe with high optical absorption coefficient is used as an absorber [1]. Solar cells with efficiencies of 10 to 16% have been obtained with CdTe grown by close space sublimation, electrodeposition, vacuum evaporation and rf sputtering methods [2]. In this work the CdTe layer was prepared by vacuum evaporation because it results with films of minimum impurities, while the Sn02:F and CdS:In layers were deposited by the spray pyrolysis technique because it is a low cost method which enables intentional doping and large area thin films."

The main phosphate minerals, apatite and francolite, are characterized by intensive selective photoluminescence, connected with impurities of Eu2+, Ce3+, V4+, Mn2+ and (UO22+ ). The non-uniform distribution of phosphate minerals in lumps makes photoluminescence sorting possible. As result, an intermediate product is recovered which is enriched by P205 and has relatively small amounts of chert, dolomite, calcite, fluorite, etc. In the case of Zin Phosphate Plant coarse rejects, for example, it is possible to separate a product enriched by francolite, practically free of chert and with a lowered calcite content. This material is suitable for flotation, with a potential 6-7 % increase yield of concentrate.

The remediation of cyanide (CN-) and nitrate (NO)-) anions in mine and agricultural waters by various photolytic methods has been reviewed and investigated. Photolytic methods such as direct photolysis, homogenous photolysis, and heterogeneous photocatalysis are briefly described and compared. Results and discussions show that each method has certain advantages and disadvantages. For each method, Eh-pH diagrams prove useful for determining reaction mechanisms. Preliminary results obtained for cyanide oxidation and nitrate reduction show that homogeneous photolysis can be superior due to faster kinetics than the other methods. The photolytic methods were individually, not simultaneously, tested and compared. Differences in concentrations of products were obtained and attributed to differences in photoconversion efficiencies and other inherent characteristics of .the photolytic methods. Various reaction mechanisms are proposed in accordance with the literature as well as measurements obtained from solution analysis using ion selective electrodes and ion chromatography .

Introduction An apparatus that will measure the surface area of a few of the simple minerals with a high degree of accuracy has been described by J. W. Bell (1). His apparatus consisted essentially of a photometric device that would measure the turbidity of fine particle suspensions. Turbidity, in this case, was considered as a function of surface area. Bell's method of surface area determination seemed to offer possibilities of extension and improvement to the point where it might approach a general method of particle size measurement. Theoretical and Practical Considerations of the Photometric Method In order to illustrate how turbidity may be considered as a function of average particle size, and to indicate the type of results expected from a photometric method of particle size measurement involving turbidity, the following theory may be hypothecated. If a number of particles, considered as spheres of uniform diameter, are placed at random in the path of a beam of light, the following expression, which will give the change in light intensity as a function of the diameter of the particles, the specific gravity of the material, and the weight involved, can be formulated from the Beer-Lambert Law:

The operating principles and design of the Model 16 are discussed and a case study presented to demonstrate the use of sorters to process an industrial mineral. In addition, an economic study is presented, to highlight the benefits of ore sorting, by evaluating the increased revenue that can be achieved using an ore sorter to process a particular ore body.

It is now believed that this sorter and its progeny may be found suitable for a large proportion of all possible sorting applications. A laser-light source and sensitive photomultiplier are employed in a scanning system to detect light reflected from the surfaces of rocks passing through the sorting zone. Electronic circuitry then analyses the photomultiplier signal, which represents the varying intensity of the reflected light, and produces control signals to actuate the appropriate valves of an array of air-blast rejection devices to remove from the feed certain particles selected by the analysing process. Typical throughput per machine ranges from 50 t/h for a minus 60mm plus 30mm feed to 200 t/h for minus 150mm plus 70mm material.

It is now believed that this sorter and its progeny may be found suitable for a large proportion of all possible sorting applications. A laser light source and sensitive photomultiplier are employed in a scanning system to detect light reflected from the surfaces of rocks passing through the sorting zone. Electronic circuitry then analyzes the photomultiplier signal, which represents the varying intensity of the reflected light, and produces control signals to actuate the appropriate valves of an array of air blast rejection devices to remove from the feed certain particles selected by the analyzing process. Typical throughput per machine ranges from 50 tons/hour for a-2 ½? + 1 ¼? feed to 200 tons/hour for -6" +2 ¾ " material.
