ARRANGEMENTS for the Annual Meeting of the Institute were well advanced at the end of December as the following program will show. Heretofore this has been printed separately, but its inclusion in the Annual Review issue of MINING AND METALLURGY will, it is hoped, make it more easily available for reference until the final program is issued, which will be distributed at the meeting. Added details will appear in the February issue. Last year's meeting drew a record crowd of over 2300 which should be exceeded this year. Early reservations at the headquarters hotel, the Waldorf-Astoria, or any other convenient hotel are desirable, as are prompt reservations for the Annual Dinner. No one need worry about too much speechmaking this year, for the honors will be awarded and accepted in a few words instead of a few paragraphs, in seconds rather than minutes.

THE American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers will hold its annual meeting in New York City, Feb. 9-12. The technical sessions, excepting the Sunday afternoon and evening sessions of the Mineral Industry Education Division (see the M.I.E.D. program) will be held in the Engineering Societies Building. The "All-Institute" luncheon on Monday will be at the Commodore Hotel; the Annual Banquet and President's Reception, the Smoker, and the Informal Dance will be at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The dinners of the Petroleum Division and the Institute of Metals Division will be at the Roosevelt Hotel.

AT the first meeting of the Institute, a paper was read by Mr. Rothwell, calling attention to the importance of at once considering the great waste of anthracite coal under the present system of mining and preparing that fuel for market, and a committee was appointed to examine and report upon the method now in use. About the time the committee were selected, a general resumption of work, after the long strike, took place in the coal regions, and the members of the committee have not in consequence had as much leisure to devote to the study of the question as its importance de¬mands. In the present preliminary report we shall merely sketch out the plan which we propose to pursue in our investigations, so that when our fellow-members are called upon to assist us in our work by fur¬nishing statistics, etc., they may understand more clearly for what object our inquiries will be made. As one of the most practicable methods of obtaining the informa¬tion requisite for an intelligent consideration of our subject, we pro¬pose to send, from time to time, to members and others interested in the mining of anthracite coal, printed sets of questions relating to points under consideration. We would here impress upon our fellow¬-members the importance of filling up these papers as far as they can from their own knowledge. We would, of course, wish each ques¬tion to be answered as fully as possible, but we do not expect every one to answer them all. BEHIND the contrasting liquid-fuel technologies of Germany and the United States lie the basic differences of scarcity and abundance. The chemists and engineers of each nation have developed processes that accommodate available raw materials. In the United States, processing is based on an abundant supply of petroleum, which is refined into a variety of fuels and lubricants. Germany has little indigenous petroleum but has a readily available supply of coal that can be converted into liquid fuels and lubricants. As a result, in Germany several basic processes have been developed for the conversion of coal into synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen). In turn, this gas is processed into products. As a normal function of its researches into petroleum processing, the petroleum industry in the United States has made careful studies of various conversion and synthesis techniques. A number of oil companies are carrying out independent development programs with the aim of synthesizing hydro- carbon products that can be marketed at a price that will compete with the price of refined petroleum products. American oil companies hope to perfect synthesis processes that will directly benefit the consumer. A good example of progress in these terms is the synthesis plant at Brownsville, Texas, which is based on the conversion of natural gas to synthetic fuels and other valuable products. When this plant is operated at near capacity, it is expected that the products will be able to compete favorably for the consumer dollar. The complete gasification of coal is a technique well rooted in history. As a controlled process on a small scale, it goes back centuries. As a practical technique on a commercial scale, it dates back to 1839, when "producer gas" appeared in Germany for limited industrial use. By 1873, "water gas," or "city gas" as it is sometimes called, was being manufactured commercially in the United States for use in heaters and stoves. The water-gas process was the cornerstone for modern synthesis. To older methods that were concerned only with carbon and oxygen reactions, it added hydrogen by means of steam. Thus far the goal of conversion was to produce gas for heating, lighting, industrial use, and cooking. The long step forward to synthesis was made in 1927, when Germany started to make gasoline from coal by means of the revolutionary Bergius hydrogenation process. Archean supracrustal rocks of the South Pass greenstone belt of western Wyoming have been the State's most prolific source of gold and iron ore. Actual gold production statistics are incomplete, but as much as 400 to 500 thousand ounces may have been mined with some silver and tungsten as a by-product. Iron ore was also mined from the greenstone belt for 22 years, and production totaled more than 90 million tons. Immediately south of the exposed greenstone belt in the Oregon Buttes area, Tertiary boulder conglomerate, which has been eroded from the granite-greenstone terrain, may contain a gold resource of 28.5 million ounces (Love and others, 1978). The amount of gold placered from stream alluvium derived from these Tertiary conglomerates is unknown.

A new method of recycling aluminum dross for preparation Al-Si-Ti alloy was studied in this paper. This was carried out in two processes. first the aluminum doss was pretreated by leaching and calcining process, the fine purity and phase of the intermediate oxide powder up to electrolysis demands, then, could be obtained when aluminum dross after washing have been leached for 2h at 100? in 20% hydrochloric acid and calcined for 2h at 1200?, which was treated by cryoite-based molten salt electrolysis. Finally, the Al-Si-Ti alloy was successfully obtained through electrochemical co-deposition in the cathode shows a typical as-cast microstructure. This new recycling method can produce high quality alloy and may bring remarkable economic and social benefits.

This work presents early results from the first study to optimize the hydrodynamics of a Plasma Lift Reactor (PLR). The PLR is designed to break down organic contaminants in aqueous solutions. New experimental results are presented for air/water tests and for plasma degradation of organic contaminants in Bayer liquor. In addition, a multiphase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model has been developed which predicts the hydrodynamic behavior in the PLR. These results of this work suggest the PLR is effective at reducing contaminants in the Bayer liquor and that the CFD model adequately describes the hydrodynamic flow.

"The benthic environmental impact experiment addresses environmental impacts at a specific site related to deep-sea mineral resource development. For such a purpose, since 2010 we have carried out essential environmental research at both the BIS and a preservation site. We have acquired several tens multi- or box core samples at 32 sites within the BIS especially between 2011 and 2013, aiming to examine the basic properties of surficial deep-sea sediment as the potential source for deep-water plumes.In this study, we present physical the properties such as water content, shear strength and also geochemical properties such as major elements, rare earth elements (REEs), heavy metal contents at the BIS. Such proxies vary distinctly according to the Facies association. The lithology of all core sediments in the BIS corresponds to both Association Ib (Unit I/Unit II) and Association IIIb (Unit I/Unit III) on the basis of the KORDI classification (KORDI, 2004); Unit I is watery mud and dark grayish brown (10YR4/2) to dark brown (10YR4/3). Unit II is highly bioturbated mud and brownish yellow (10YR6/6). Unit III is very dark brown (10YR3/2) to black (10YR2/1) mud. Physical properties of these sediment types show that Association Ib is distinct from Association IIIb. The vertical profile of water content changed more sharply in Association IIIb probably due to compaction; water contents varied from 230 to 300% in Association Ib and changed from 200 to 250% in Association IIIb. The vertical profiles of shear strength are also quite different between Associations; the profile curve in Association IIb is much more gentle due to bioturbation."

The University of Missouri-Rolla is currently researching the concept of using glass microspheres in explosives as taggants as part of a 3-year technical project funded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. These taggants are intended to provide two functions, first explosive detection and second post explosive event identification. The key priority is being able to detect explosives used in terrorist acts prior to detonation. The research on the use of microspheres includes the development of indicator taggants for the purpose of revealing the presence of hidden explosives, by either emitting radiation when bombarded with neutrons or emitting selective vapors, such as DMNB which may be readily “sniffed”. Of secondary importance, after an illegal explosion, the tags serve to identify the lot number, etc of the explosive. This information is to aid in the tracking, arrest, conviction and imprisonment of the perpetrators.

"Methane is a signifi cant greenhouse gas. Methane is released from coal seams during the mining process, both in surface and underground operations. This uncontrolled release is termed æfugitive emissionsÆ and in underground mines is transferred to the atmosphere in ventilation air, known as ventilation air methane (VAM). The global VAM emissions are over 369 Mt of CO2-e/a (Butler, 2011; US EPA, 2010). Coal mines may abate this VAM or consider abatement should there be a price on carbon. These fugitive emissions are heading towards ten per cent of AustraliaÆs emissions by 2020 (Department of Climate Change, 2011).There are safety issues involved in VAM destruction. Due to the nature of coal, and coalextraction, unpredicted methane spikes above the lower-explosive-limit (LEL) can occur in theventilation air; for example outburst events or ventilation failure. This could lead to a mine fi re ifthe mine ventilation air was connected to a VAM abatement plant and the risks are left unmitigated.CorkyÆs is working with the mining industry to directly address these safety issues. CorkyÆs calltheir technology VAM RAB, which stands for ventilation air methane regenerative afterburner(VAM RAB). VAM RAB utilises the principles of a thermal oxidiser.This paper discusses fi ve independent layers of protection (ILPs) to fi rst stop methane reachingthe thermal oxidiser and secondly prevent the fl ame front from burning away from the VAMRAB. The test work completed or contemplated includes safety integrity level (SIL) assignmentto various vents, barriers and door systems to prevent a fl ammable mixture reaching the VAMRAB, proven rapid response methane monitoring sourced from the petrochemical industry, anddefl agration experiments to test the eff ectiveness of the passive geometry and active engineeringcontrols. These experiments and SIL assessments indicate that it is possible to safely connect theVAM RAB to a working coal mine.Further work is required to upscale the pilot safety work. Refi nement to the design is possible;for example improvement to safety duct controls once trialled at demonstration scale plus thermalenergy capture for power generation or other applications to provide heat. Nevertheless, thispaper shows how safety issues can be managed by a multilayer of protection approach usingvents, barriers and doors, and appropriate thermal oxidiser geometry."

Horizontal and vertical air classification systems were tested individually and in simulated tandem use for the recovery of ferrous and nonferrous metals and of other noncombustible and combustible products from shredded urban refuse. The horizontal air system with a larger tonnage throughput was used to obtain preliminary separations, and a smaller capacity vertical system was used as a cleaning device. Air elutriation, magnetic separation, and screening of shredded minus 6-inch municipal refuse recovered 92 percent of the metal in a relatively clean iron product contaminated only by adhering coatings or entrapped materials, recovered 97 percent of the combustibles in a 97-percent combustible product, and rejected 88 percent of the nonmetal noncombustibles. Cleaning of the preliminary combustible fraction produced a 98-percent paper product while rejecting other combustibles (plastics, rubber, textiles, etc.) into a 94-percent combustible product. Retreatment of the preliminary noncombustible fraction produced a relatively clean glass product.

"Current industry practice for HPGR assessment and sizing relies on conducting a series of tests using pilot-scale machines with roll diameters of 700 mm to 1000 mm. Substantial amounts of sample are required for such pilot test programs, typically 1 to 10 tonnes of the sample is needed depending on the level of study and complexity of the resource. Collection of large quantities of representative samples during the early stage development is challenging and expensive, thus significantly hinders the HPGR technology from being incorporated into early-stage designs. A robust and reliable laboratory test is therefore needed to allow a fair consideration of HPGR for early stage projects. With support from the Canadian Mineral Industry Research Organization (CAMIRO), the NBK Institute of Mining Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC) developed a suite of Piston Press bench-scale tests that correlated to pilot and full scale HPGR operating information (Davaanyam, 2015; Davaanyam et al, 2015; McClintock, 2018). The Piston Press Tests (PPTs) are capable of assessing the HPGR technology at the scoping, pre-economic analysis (PEA), and pre-feasibility (PFS) stages of project development. This paper will briefly describe the theory on which the PPTs are based, and then presents a case study conducted for a copper deposit to show how the PPTs are being used for scoping and pre-feasibility level studies. Specifically, the PPTs are being used to provide information for preliminary sizing and selection of an HPGR and to assess the effect of ore variability on HPGR performance. The results are also applied to developing HPGR circuit designs and can be incorporated in simulation so that optimum design parameters can be selected.INTRODUCTION It is widely accepted that high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) offer a viable energy-efficient solution for the modern comminution flowsheet design. Table 1 summarizes selected examples of HPGR applications in the hard rock mining industry. The main benefits of HPGRs are energy savings which leads to lower operating costs, and its stable operating characteristics that can better cope with variations in ore hardness when compared to the conventional SAG mill-based comminution circuits."

UNLESS present in considerable proportion, metals of the precious-metal group-other than gold and silver-are not readily detected by the methods of fire assaying usually applied to ores and metallurgical products. Platinum, when present in small quantity, will ordinarily be reported as silver unless special methods of parting are used. Other elements occurring in the gold itself are all fluxed and slagged in the assay operation and if analyses are made on bullions the melting and slagging operations to which the bullion has been subjected may eliminate most of the associated elements. On the other hand, the analysis of precipi-tate from the cyanide treatment of gold ores may reveal the presence of many unexpected elements, such as tungsten and molybdenum. It is uncertain, however, whether many of the elements present in the pre-cipitate are derived from the ore gangue or from the gold itself. No very general survey of the distribution of metallic elements in gold seems to have been made. Rose and Newman,1 in connection with the composition of native gold, say in part as follows: Gold is occasionally found alloyed with copper and sometimes also with iron, bis-muth, lead, mercury, tin, antimony, palladium or rhodium. Rhodium gold from Mexico was found to be of the specific gravity 15.5 to 16.8 and contained 34 to 43 per cent of rhodium. The native alloy of palladium, gold, and silver from Porpez con-tains 85.98 per cent of gold, 9.85 per cent palladium and 4.17 per cent silver. Mal-donite, from Victoria, contains gold 64.5 per cent, bismuth 35.5 per cent (Louis). Dana' says that native gold is usually alloyed with silver in varying amounts, and that sometimes it also contains traces of copper and iron. Rare varieties contain palladium, rhodium and bismuth. Other authors, for instance Zeigler3 and Clark,4 give similar information. Most refer-ences on the subject agree that ordinary native golds contain, in common, the elements silver, copper and iron. After completion of the work of which this paper is a record, the conclusion is reached that all ordinary native gold probably does contain these elements and, although in certain cases other elements may be found to be present, that it is difficult to

This paper describes research conducted under the BuMines's Advancing Metal and Nonmetal Mining Technology Program, a major element being the application of new and improved technology to shaft design in deep underground vein-type mines. Two basic design parameters considered in shaft planning are configuration (shape) and ground support. The most common shapes are circular and rectangular. Ground support systems include concrete, timber sets, steel sets, rock bolts, and steel liners. The inherent advantages and/or disadvantages of various shaft designs such as ventilation and fire resistance, flexibility and ground support characteristics are well known. Circular concrete-lined shafts have minimal resistance to air flora and are virtually fireproof, an important consideration in deep hot mines. However, concrete does not yield significantly, and failure conditions and misalignment cannot be easily repaired. Timber-supported rectangular shafts predominate in the Coons d'Alene Mining District with its highly stressed and frequently heavy ground. The sets can be relieved and reblocked when out of alignment. However, the constant maintenance and repair requirements result in exposure to an inherently dangerous working environment combined with excessive operating costs. Obviously a dilemma exists--a circular, concrete-lined opening has many desirable features, provided it is strong enough to withstand the stresses involved. Rectangular, timber supported shafts have proven adequate in the Coeur d'Alenes; however, the implication of increased maintenance and repair requirements on ever-deepening shafts in this district and other similar areas will be an important design consideration in the future. This paper, then, presents shaft-configuration and ground-support guidelines to help remove some of the uncertainty concerning the stresses to be encountered in typical deep vein mining areas.

For this study, a sample of 5 g of copper powders obtained by grinding printed circuit boards of computers fixe to 50 mesh (270 μm) according Tyler® series was used. This sample was wholly characterized by XRD, SEM–EDS and AAS. The leaching medium used wasO2S2O3 2. From the evaluated variables it was obtained an apparent order of the reaction of n = 2.34 s−1, whereas according the effect of partial oxygen pressure it was obtained an apparent order of reaction of n = 0.9516 and the activation energy of system was of 6.5 kJ mol−1, the results so achieved suggest a transport control to the solid–liquid interface. Under certain work conditions such as: S2O3 2 ¼ 0:5M, 500 mL, 750 min−1, P/PO2 = 1 atm, 338 K, 5 g of sample and 9000 s of reaction time, it is possible get up to 97.35% of leached copper.

The Al-Sc Alloys show many advanced properties for a wide range of engineering applications. But the metal Sc must be added into the metal Al in the form of the Al-Sc master alloy, which is usually produced by the thermal reduction process. In this paper, the decomposition voltages of Sc2O3 and Al2O3 in Na3AlF6-K3AlF6-AlF3 melt were calculated based on the Nernst equation. And the Al-Sc master alloy was prepared in the melt at 950°C by electrolysis. The results show that the Al-Sc master alloy can be prepared by the co-deposition of Sc3+ and Al3+ at the cathode if the concentration ratio of Sc2O3 to Al2O3 in the melt is more than 2:1 under the condition of the aluminum electrolysis. SEM and ICP analysis of the product indicates that the Al-Sc master alloy is made of the phase Al and the phase Al3Sc.

High rate compressible media filter (CMF) tests produced exceptional total suspended solids (TSS) removal at hydraulic loading rates ranging from 97.8 to 122.2 m/h. The compressible media is manufactured from a robust resin fiber that can withstand low pH and temperatures up to 149 °C. The media porosity can be varied by applying compression onto the media. At 40% compression, the CMF can remove particles greater than 4 μ. Three synthetic test-samples were generated by Hazen Research Inc., (Golden, Colorado) to simulate the copper Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS), Raffinate and Electrolyte solutions used for the testwork conducted at their facility. The preliminary results showed that the CMF was very effective in removing TSS without the use of chemical conditioning from the above test-solutions with efficiencies of 98%, 97%, and 96%, respectively. Given the remarkably high hydraulic loading rates, the industrial equipment footprint would be minimized appreciably over conventional clarification and alternative filtration systems.

The cause of reduced workability and increased ageing of a blast furnace taphole clay was examined. The investigated taphole clay contained 60 mass% alumina, with phenol-formaldehyde resole resin and liquid pitch serving as the binder system. The workability and Marshall extrusion pressure of the as-manufactured clay samples were evaluated to assess the extent of ageing of the clay. The wettability of all the raw materials was investigated to confirm compatibility between the dry raw materials and both the resin and liquid pitch, while the dry raw materials were analysed using XRF, XRD, and SEM-EDS. The characterisation of the resin and liquid pitch, as well as an analysis of their interaction, was performed using viscosity measurements, Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The analyses confirmed a chemical interaction between the resole resin and liquid pitch, where the chemical structure of the resole resin changed when mixed with pitch, preventing the typical curing behaviour of the resin. Upon ageing of the resin-pitch mixtures, the resin underwent premature cross-linking, causing the curing process to initiate at lower temperatures, i.e., earlier onset of curing. This premature cross-linking was likely due to secondary amines present in the liquid pitch, which acted as a catalyst for the curing process of the resin. This reduction in curing temperature after ageing was confirmed by an increase in binder viscosity, which was identified as the primary cause of reduced workability, accelerated ageing, and increased Marshall extrusion pressure of the taphole clay.

A significant amount of energy exists in the waste generated by the coal and timber industries. In the coal industry, the energy loss is mainly due to the discharge of fine coal to the waste impoundment. Despite the fact that the fine coal has the greatest cleaning potential, dewatering, handling and transportation concerns prevent its use as product in many cases. Likewise, the sawdust generated from wood production has energy value and is used as industrial boiler fuel when the transportation distance is relative short. However, wood waste is often discarded into cumbersome landfills due to uneconomical transportation alternatives. Recent research found that these two waste materials can be combined to provide a high energy fuel of around 13000 btu/lb that can be easily handled and transported to end users.

PRIOR to June, 1937, the employees of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Ltd., at Timmins, Ontario, received medical care for themselves under a contract system developed through an agreement between the employer, employee, and a contract physician. This form of practice is common to the mining industry in Ontario. But with the improvement in mining methods and conditions of living, and through an increasing demand for provision of a complete medical care, it was not any surprise when the employees of the Hollinger mine approached organized medicine and indicated their desire for a plan to provide their families with a more or less complete medical service in addition to that supplied for themselves. In April, 1937, this approach was made, and on June 18th, 1937, the Hollinger Employees' Medical Services Association was formed and started to provide medical services. A review of five years' experience is now presented. The Association provides complete medical service for the employee, his wife and family, as well as those dependents who are the total responsibility of the employee. The employee membership is limited to employees at the Hollinger mine in Timmins who reside in the immediate vicinity. The employee is examined by a Company doctor on application for employment and is subject to further examination by a specialise in chest diseases under the direction of the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. The wife and family are not subject to examination but have to be registered when the employee is accepted for employment. The dependents, other than the immediate family, are subject to medical examination and approval after the employee has applied for such dependent or dependents to be admitted. Membership in the Association is obligatory when the employee is hired, but at the end of any Association year he may drop out if he so wishes.
