This report investigates whether it is tractable and thereupon reasonable to remove the booster influences when ranking the toxic fumes of non-cap-sensitive mining explosives. The hazard potential is represented by relative fume toxicity RFT, the resultant influence computed from a formulated rule with a restricted set (tally) of fume components and multiplying constants. The RFT result is compared to the rule criterion that represents the worst case tolerable toxicity stipulated by regulations or otherwise. The typical nonstoichiometric booster composition can render notable unwanted influence on the RFT ranking results. Historically, the remedy was to shoot the booster separately and reduce the trial concentrations by the relevant subtractions. Unreal negative concentration results were noted on rare occasions, revealing the faulty nature of the reduction procedure. With thermodynamic reaction chemistry codes TDRC, on the other hand, the booster ingredients can be retained in or removed from the reactant tabulation, yielding reduction factors taken as the concentration ratios for the two circumstances. The underlying presumption regarding reduction factors is that the ratios of component concentrations with and without the booster ingredients when resolved theoretically ought to equal those rendered experimentally, when tractable. Upon rearranging the presumed relationship, the unadjusted fume concentrations divided by theoretical reduction factors yield the wanted readjusted fume concentrations, thereby removing the booster influence without generating unreal negative concentrations. The work principle from thermodynamics restricted by the constraint of zero-net interaction loss is utilized in conjunction with the TDRC to resolve the wanted (Z-state) fume spectrum. This circumvents the recognized difficulty with traditional hydrodynamic detonation theory that is related to the nonideal reaction characteristics of typical mining explosives. The tacit characteristic of the Z-state resolved from the non-trajectory work principle is that it can not be remedied or tampered with, unlike the traditional trajectory techniques where the reaction products can be readjusted by changing formula representations, nullifying specific reactions or otherwise manipulating the thermodynamic trajectory process. Though the work principle theory is an unfinished formulation, the Z-state results prove worthy enough for rendering trends and comparisons and reaching otherwise useful conclusions. Further refinements should yield more reliable fume spectra and indicate explosive composition readjustments that would reduce toxic effects within underground mines and the wider world environment.

"When MacLean Engineering chairman and founder Don MacLean got the first question from a minesite about the possibility of addressing ventilation limits through incremental fleet electrification, he was intrigued. It was back in 2015, and the MacLean scissor bolter was already diesel-electric (jumbo trailing cable), so it made sense to him that if they could engineer a battery drive system for the unit’s tramming cycle, they would have the inaugural electric vehicle (EV) MacLean unit.At that time, there were not any entirely diesel-free hard rock mines in existence on the planet, and that remains the case to this day — although the Borden project in northern Ontario is progressing toward that goal (see page 33). This meant there was essentially zero market demand for battery electric vehicles as well as a complete lack of battery technology to address the battery electrification of heavy haulage. Heavy haulage is the part of a typical mine’s mobile fleet with the largest footprint when it comes to diesel particulate emissions, greenhouse gases and wasted energy in the form of heat.Three years later — the wave of battery electrification that is currently picking up speed across the mining industry promises to hit full swing by the early 2020s when a slew of new build, diesel-free mines will start construction. But this movement toward emissions-free mobile fleets is not a completely new phenomenon. Instead, it is an updating of mining technology from a previous generation. What is going on now is the re-electrification of mining. Up until the 1960s, early generations of battery technology (lead acid) and electric locomotive systems were the norm for material and ore haulage in Canada and elsewhere.The thought of a coming paradigm change in mining was particularly pertinent to Don MacLean back in 2015, as he had been part of the era that ushered in the first generation of rubber-tire diesel equipment, when he was a divisional foreman with Inco in Sudbury in the 1970s. He was part of the operating team that was tasked to build a rail loop on one extraction level of the mine. At that time, events on the ground overtook the project, as diesel-powered mobile equipment became a viable option. Once the first diesel scoop was introduced at Creighton #3 shaft, it was clear what the power, haulage capacity and mobility could do for operations and that era of electric rail haulage underground was effectively over."

"Separation removal of fluorite and calcite from scheelite is a difficult technical operation in current industrial practice with a heating process causing large energy consumption and high production costs. In this work, the floatation separation at room temperature were carried out using two types of skarn scheelite ores. The results showed that CaO and Na203 are better than NaOH as a regulator in pH value. In the rough floatation and first cleaning floatation, CaO (500g/t), Na203 (3000g/t) were used as a pH regulator, waterglass (4000g/t) was as a gangue depressant, oleic acid or sodium oleate were used as a collector. The degree of the obtained W03 concentrate was more than 65% (commercial product).IntroductionThe mainly gangue in scheelite are quartz, calcite, barite and some rare metal ores. There are three main types of scheelite for floatation: scheelite--quartz (silicate minerals) type, scheelite-calcite/ fluorite type, scheelite--calcite/fluorite/barite type. Generally speaking, scheelite--quartz type is separated easily, and others are difficult, on the contrary. The last two kinds of scheelite are always called scheelite--calcite/fluorite (barite) type, because there are similar floatation ability and floatation process between them. Scheelite, calcite and fluorite have same cation - Ca2+, it makes them have close floatation property [1]. Separation removal of fluorite and calcite from scheelite is a difficult technical operation in current industrial practice.The traditional separation method is a heating floatation process (Petrov's process) [2]. It can deal with many kinds of scheelite, and can be obtained stable quality ofW03 concentrate. On the other hand Petrov's process causes large energy consumption, high production costs and bad operational environments. Since 1980s, scheelite ambient temperature floatation has become the mainstream of study [3]. Nowadays more and more studies on scheelite floatation focus on complex reagent system [4, 5], rigid operating rules and at the same time development new regulator [1, 5]. Some research show there are new regulators can concentrate scheelite efficiently, but it may cause high costs, potential pollution and difficulty to spread. Oleic acid and sodium oleate used as collector have high adsorption capacity to scheelite, but same to calcite and fluorite[6]. So, it would not get ideal effect for separation of scheelite. In this work, the floatation separation at room temperature were carried out using two kinds of skarn scheelite ores. Calcium oxide and sodium carbonate was used as a pH value regulator, waterglass was used as a depressant and Oleic acid/sodium oleate was used as a collector. The result of experiment showed that the degree of the obtained W03 concentrate was more than 65% by one time ambient temperature roughing floatation, several times ambient temperature cleaning process."

"The inclusion of small amounts of silicon, phosphorus and sulphur in iron ores or concentrates can have a profound effect on the steel making process and thus on the final iron and steel products. In nature however, it is inevitable that iron deposits contain unwanted elements. Each element has its own distinct effect on the final steel product. The effect of high silicon is the formation of gray iron. Phosphorus mainly increases hardness and strength, lowers solidus temperature and increases fluidity and cold shortness. Finally sulphur contamination causes cracks in the iron texture when smelting and forms white iron when casting. Overall, the acceptable level of phosphorus, sulphur and silica in the iron concentrate should be less than 0.04%, 0.15 % and 1.5 % respectively.Scarcity of high grade iron ores necessitates using lower grade ores with higher amounts of impurities. The purpose of iron concentrators is to increase iron grades to an appropriate level suitable for steel making as well as removing impurities. Although many impurities can be traced in the ore, the most predominant impurities are limited to one or two elements. In this paper the beneficiation methods for removing SiO2, P and S are presented, including flotation, and the parameters that need to be considered in the design of beneficiation plants are discussed. Finally industrial cases are discussed along with their metallurgical performance.INTRODUCTIONIn metal sector, value of iron ores and concentrates is determined by iron percentage as well ascontent of:• Useful elements (Mn, Ni, Cr, V, Ti): natural alloying elements in steel• Deleterious impurities (S, P, As, Zn, Pb, K, Na): impair metal properties or complicate operational process in blast furnace• Fluxing components (Si, Ca, Mg,, Al)Sulphur and copper result in red-short, phosphorus is the cause of cold brittleness and arsenic and copper decrease welding characteristics. Sulphur should not exceed 0.15 in commercial ore. Acceptable sulphur content in ores and concentrates for producing sinter and pellets is 0.6%max, as sintering and heat hardening of pellets remove sulphur 60-90%. Phosphorous content in ores, sinter and pellets is limited to 0.07%-0.15%. 0.00.1% As max, 0.1-0.2% Zn max and up to 0.2% Cu are allowed in iron-ore part of the blast furnace burden for the production of standard conversion pig iron. Slag-forming components are divided into basic oxides (Ca, Mg) and acidic (Si, Al). Higher ratios of basic to acidic oxides are preferred since this reduces raw fluxing material."

Traditional in situ fan flow test methods under accepted standards require determinations to be made of both static pressures and total pressures during testing. This is to determine the resultant velocity pressures, which are vital in the accurate determination of the final fan airflow. These crucial velocity pressure (Vp) determinations are normally determined using simple manometric instrumentation such as an electronic manometer or an inclined liquid filled manometer. There is relatively little noise or fluctuation in the static pressure determinations and they can be quite easily and accurately recorded. There is almost always considerable fluctuation in the velocity pressure determinations though due to the highly turbulent and irregular velocity profile normally found in such in situ installations. This velocity turbulence means that the recording of such data is subject to random human error as the observer tries to average such fluctuations mentally during the observation period. Worse than this, and in the extreme, the recording of such velocity pressure data could actually easily be misreported if, for some reason, persons chose to do so.The author has devised a field method using highly accurate quartz crystal logging barometers to objectively record these velocity pressures. The method eliminates the ability to either mistakenly or intentionally misreport these crucial velocity pressures and is carried out in parallel with the recognised methodology, so result comparisons can be drawn. As such, a far greater level of confidence can be achieved in the final flow performance results than using the traditional more subjective method. Further to this it is difficult and almost impossible to refute the results using this ancillary substantiation method.The accurate determination of fan flows due to the impost of the carbon tax has taken on much more significance given the financial impacts in Australia at this time. The methodology detailed herein can be applied equally for both fan flow compliance testing and the verification of mine airflow data for greenhouse gas emission evaluations.The paper utilises the results of one 24-point pitot traverse to demonstrate the various findings. These include the very wide range of velocity pressures, which were logged at most of the measuring stations. It also illustrates how the method is utilised and compares the results derived from both this method and the more subjective traditional method along with the benefits of logging the velocity pressure results during the testing process.CITATION:Rowland, J A, 2013. The movement of iron ore, limestone and-coal on the great lakes involves an intricate transportation network between mine, dock, vessel, railroad and consumer. The system requires that stockpiling be performed at certain points in the pipeline because of the seasonal closing of the lakes, traditionally, this has been accomplished at origin and destination with a substantial cost. Impact to both the shipper and consumer, From the time that the raw material is removed from the ground, expeditious handling and movement to final destination is threatened by a series of potential delays. An initial movement from mine or processing plant to the upper lake port must be coordinated between rail equipment and dock facility, As each vessel is loaded, a schedule must be developed which routes the cargo to an unoccupied lower lake port. However, if the vessel is not delayed by unpredictable weather conditions on the lake, the boat may still arrive at a port congested with other vessels awaiting their turn to unload.

Rendering safe explosives in an urban environment presents a unique challenge due to the safety concerns and disruption to the general public. Potential damage to the surrounding homes, businesses, utilities and transportation infrastructure are some of the major concerns when planning the render-safe operation. Engineering controls to mitigate blast effects, such as damaging air over pressure levels, material ejection and ground borne vibration, need to be implemented as part of the operation. Monitoring of seismic and air overpressure during these operations are needed to protect against potential claims when controlled or unplanned detonations occur. Two recent render-safe operations conducted in and around urban environments dealt with deteriorated, sensitive dynamite and damaged blasting caps. Utilizing innovative neutralization chemicals and processes to render-safe the deteriorated dynamite, while protecting the general public, proved to be the safest, most environmentally responsible and cost-effective way to approach the problem. In both cases, the explosives, old dynamite and detonators were found in abandoned, unlocked magazines. The dynamite was in a significantly deteriorated state, which was evident due to the nitroglycerine found leaking in,around and under the dynamite cartridges. Iron wire permissible electric blasting caps were also found in a corroded condition with exposed explosives and un-shunted lead wires. With occupied buildings within 180 feet (54.86 meters) of the magazines, any procedure (e.g. transporting, countercharging, burning) that could potentially cause a detonation was not an option. In the event of an unplanned detonation during neutralization operations, several blast mitigation methods were employed to safeguard the site. This operation and a similar one with over 1,000 pounds of crushed and buried leaky dynamite were unique since all the explosives were rendered-safe and neutralized on site. The use of advanced neutralization products and filtering processes allowed for a safer, more environmentally responsible way to resolve the problem. The magazines and all residual solids and fluids were tested and confirmed by independent labs to have no explosives residues. The effluents were treated on site, tested and met safe levels, so they were disposed of at a local municipal wastewater facility.

Solar Hydrogen Energy Corporation (SHEC Labs) recently constructed a pilot-plant to demonstrate a Dry Fuel Hydrogen Generation System that is powered primarily by sunlight focusing-mirrors. The pilot-plant consists of: A Solar Mirror Array and Advanced Solar Concentrator and Shutter System; and two thermo-catalytic reactors to convert Methane, Carbon Dioxide, and Water into Hydrogen. Results from the pilot study show that Solar Hydrogen generation is feasible and cost-competitive with traditional Hydrogen production. More than 95% of Hydrogen commercially produced today is by the Steam Methane Reformation (SMR) of natural gas, a process that liberates Carbon Dioxide to the atmosphere. The SMR process provides a net energy loss of 30 to 35% when converting from Methane to Hydrogen. Solar Hydrogen production provides a 14% net energy gain when converting Methane into Hydrogen since the energy used to drive the process is from the sun. The environmental benefits of generating Hydrogen using renewable energy include significant greenhouse gas and criteria air contaminant reductions.

"This paper describes the work undertaken to renovate the Pipe Open Pit drainage system, incorporating measures to improve effluent quality. It describes the technical feat of drilling an l l-inch-diameter hole from the bottom of the open pit for a distance of 1100feet to intersect an underground drift. An innovative method of checking the inclination of this hole is also described. The paper outlines the construction required on the 1500-foot level of the underground mine to facilitate water impoundment and slime settling, as well as the instrumentation for control of water flows. IntroductionThe Manitoba Division of Inco Metals Company operates two mines-an underground mine at Thompson and an open pit at Pipe. The Pipe Open Pit is located 20 miles southwest of the City of Thompson, approximately 400 miles due north of Win nipeg(Fig. 1).Surface diamond drilling of the Pipe ore body was sta rted in 1959. In 1961, a shaft was sunk to a depth o f 1,570 feet to carry out further exploration work and obtain bulk ore samples for metallurgical testing. Site preparation to mine the upper portion of the orebody as an open pit was initiated in 1966 and by late 1967, the removal of silt and clay overburden was in progress. The contractor completed the dredging in the fall of 1969. Over 12 million cubic yards of muskeg, clay and silt was removed, which in some places was 150 feet deep over the orebody. Production began in early 1971, by which time the top three benches of rock had been excavated and the orebody exposed.The Pipe No. 2 Mine main shaft was started in 1970 and completed in 1973 at a depth of 3,160 feet. Development for exploration purposes was carried out on the 1500 and 2460 levels, and permanent pumping facilities were installed.The surface dimensions of the open pit are 2,200 by 1,600 feet, with the long axis striking northeast. The walls are designed with a 45- to 50-degree slope and the ultimate design depth is 720 feet. The present depth of the pit is 520 feet and production capacity is 6,800 tons of ore per mine day."

Due to the ongoing restructuring of the mining industry in central Europe with a continuous decline of the number of large underground mines and collieries, and a simultaneous decline of staff numbers in the remaining mines, the established mine rescue schemes are endangered to collapse. With the end of the mine rehabilitation at Wismut Uranium in 2014, the last remaining major mine rescue teams in Saxony, providing basic mine rescue services for all other mines in the region, will disappear. This will leave a large number of small mines and other underground operations without capable mine rescue support. Since none of these companies is able to set up a complete mines rescue unit on its own, new ways have to be found. Among others, a central mine rescue team for central Germany as well as the assistance by special trained professional fire fighters or mine rescue teams from abroad are discussed. Problems like location of the central rescue team, financing, communication and transport have to be solved. This paper provides an overview over the complexity of the problem as an example for other mining regions worldwide and will discuss national and cross-national strategies.

The following is a brief summary of the Bulli Colliery and its method of operation when Australian Iron and Steel Ltd. took control.Bulli Colliery is situated about a mile west of the village of Bulli and is some 10 mUes north of the Australian Iron and Steel Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.The mine is owned by Australian Iron and Steel Limited, who purchased it in 1936 from the liquidators of Bulli Colliery and Coke Works.It is one of the oldest working coal mines in Australia, having been opened about 1858 and has worked more or less continuously since that date.The seam worked is the No. 1, or Bulli, Seam, which outcrops along the escarpment of the Illawarra Range and is generally operated by tunnels, the portal at Bulli being some 440ft. above sea level.The colliery holding is fairly extensive, but the coal seam over a large portion of the area within two miles of the outcrop has been more or less destroyed by an intrusion of basalt.At present there is no coal being worked within a distance of about 21 miles from the surface, the farthest workings being about four miles from the tunnel mouth.The existing main haulage road, for the first two miles from the portal, is not straight; it is very narrow over fairly long stretches and has many changes of grade varying from 3% in favour of the load to 13% against the load.The dumping station and screens are situated close to the portal of the haulage tunnel, and at this point the coal is loaded into railway hopper waggons, which are then hauled by rope to the top of a self-acting incline. The waggons are lowered down the incline, a distance of approximately! mile, the ruling grade being about 18 %.From the bottom of the incline, waggons are hauled by Company's steam locomotive to exchange sidings from whence they are taken by New South Wales Government Railway engine to the Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.

A CORPORATION would go into bankruptcy if its affairs were conducted as are those of the state of New York, according to the Committee on New York State Government Reorganization of the American Engineering Council of the Federated American Engineering Societies, in a report to the chairman, of the Joint Judiciary Committees of the Senate and Assembly. The report, just made public, was signed by the three members of the committee who were appointed by Herbert Hoover. They were H. de-B. Parsons, chair- man, Paul G. Brown and Lewis B. Stillwell. Although the American Engineering Council is a national organization, it decided to aid in governmental reorganization in New York State because of the magnitude of the task. The Council's committee in its report urged the passage of three state reorganization amendments for consolidation of departments, an executive budget system, and a four-year term for the higher state officials. This is the problem of the reorganization of the Federal Government. The, inadequacy, the wastefulness, and the inefficiency of our federal organization was evident, enough under pre-war conditions. These inadequacies, these inefficiencies, these wastes were exhibited to the country during the war at the cost of millions. Congress has placed the problem in the hands of a very able Congressional Joint Committee, but if this Joint Committee succeeds in securing the imminently necessary results it will only be by full insistent support to it by public opinion. Many attempts have been made at reorganization before but all, of them have gone to the same crematory-the interminable differences in opinion among the executive and legislative officials over details.

Molten slag used in the secondary refining process (RH process) for the production of Ultra-Low C (ULC) steel is typically composed of CaO-Al2O3-MgOsat.-FetO with minor constituents. FetO in the RH slag is the main source of reoxidation of the molten ULC steel in the ladle by 2Al + 3(FetO) = (Al2O3) + 3Fe, thereby serving as the source of the alumina inclusions. On the other hand, FetO also enhances the fluidity of the slag, thereby increasing inclusion absorption capacity. Optimum slag chemistry design is therefore required to produce clear ULC steel. The reoxidation kinetics was investigated in the present study by employing high-temperature experiments and developing the reaction rate model. Initial compositions of slag ((% CaO)0/(% Al2O3)0 and (% FetO)0)) and reaction temperature were varied and change of [% Al] in the molten steel was measured. The rate-controlling step was analysed. It was found that the rate-controlling step in some cases changed during the reoxidation: from a mass transport of Al in the molten steel to a mixed transport including Al2O3 in the molten slag. The experimental data validated the reaction rate model based on the elucidated reaction mechanism and FactSage thermodynamic database. The model suggested that high (% CaO)0/(% Al2O3)0 suppresses the reoxidation only when (% FetO)0 is low (5 or lower in the present study).

With the aging infrastructure, there is a need to maintain and extend the service life of steel structures in general and steel piles in particular. Steel piles support not only vertical loads but also dynamic horizontal loads in onshore and offshore applications. In order to select the appropriate methods to repair corroded steel piles used in onshore and offshore application, corrosion mechanisms were investigated with the rate of corrosion in various environments. The corrosion rate of steel in soil, water and soil-water interface varied from 2 to 500 µm/year. Based on literature review and analyses, the repair methods can be broadly characterized as protective coating, electro-chemical methods, wrapping and encasement and partial replacement of steel. Also, methods to evaluate the repair materials and the repair configuration have been documented.

Many studies indicate that in the US alone, costs due to corrosion loss is more than $276 billion annually (Michiel et al., 2010). Corrosion is the major cause of deterioration of steel structures and components (MNC, 2005). Load bearing steel piles are used as foundations for various types of structures and hence corrosion is very much influenced by the environment such as soil, water and soil-water interface. Corrosion of steel pile foundations may result in reduced capacity in the axial and lateral directions. Hence, understanding the rate of pile corrosion is essential to select the appropriate repair methods to avoid excessive deflection and failure (Decker et al. 2008).To prevent the deterioration mechanisms that attack a pile, it is fundamental both to identify and understand the deterioration mechanism that has been the cause of damage. An 8-foot tall horseshoe adit tunnel located within an abutment of the Mount Morris Dam in Mount Morris, NY required repair of a failed reinforced concrete liner. The adit tunnel is entirely founded within highly weathered shale bedrock units, which induced unloading stress on the original tunnel liner. An epoxy-impregnated carbon fiber fabric wrap manufactured by Sika was chosen to repair the failed adit tunnel liner. Kilduff Underground Engineering completed the design of the tunnel repair utilizing both empirical and numerical methods. Merco Engineering Contractors completed the injection of chemical grout and repair liner installation.
