Because of increased pressure from Federal & State Regulatory Agencies, most acid flows will require some sort of treatment prior to being discharged to receiving streams. In many industries, the volumes of liquors are large and their acid content varied. Pressure to minimize costs of waste treatment equipment and land usage makes development of a treatment process incorporating these desires mandatory. "Standard" methods of acid neutralization with lime have been known for years, however, the volume and characteristics of the resultant precipitated solids can create a disposal problem. Also, when standard lime treatment is used, the settling characteristic of the precipitated solids is normally slow. In some instances, the necessity of added dissolved solids removal, (such as iron, needing aeration) add to the problem of concentrating neutralized solids. In a paper published in the September 1970 issue of "Coal Age," *the results of extensive test work by personnel of the Homer Research Laboratories of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Bethlehem Pa., were reported. This paper dealt specifically with development of a flow sheet to treat acid mine drainage (hereafter referred to as AMD) from coal mine operations. Measurement while drilling (MWD) is a subsurface exploration technique associated with real-time and continuous monitoring and recording of drilling data during the drilling process. This technique can be used for underground investigations to differentiate ground strata, detect the presence of fractures and voids, and evaluate geological features and mechanical properties of geomaterial. When MWD is used for geotechnical investigations, it can improve site characterization, identify variable conditions, improve design and construction, lead to shorter project delivery times, reduce the cost and risks associated with limited subsurface data and geotechnical uncertainties, and maximum return-on-investment. Given these benefits, MWD is gaining attention among transportation agencies and the geotechnical industry. Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA’s) innovation deployment program “Every Day Counts (EDC-5)” includes the implementation of Advanced Geotechnical Methods in Exploration (A-GaME), which aims to implement effective, underutilized subsurface exploration methods, including MWD, in U.S. practice. This paper provides an overview of the MWD technology for geotechnical site investigations and presents a case history where MWD was employed to design deep foundation for the construction of a building in Massachusetts. The advantages of this technology for risk reduction and project cost and time saving are also discussed.

Concurrently designing both the solvent extraction and the electrowinning processes of a copper SX EW project, in an integrated and consecutive approach, with one technology partner, will ensure continuity in the process flow and smooth execution of the engineering function with minimum duplication, time loss and errors, maximizing time efficiency resulting in excellent quality and quick and effective start-up of the plant. Projects will benefit significantly from the common technology partner approach as not only will the SX and EW processes be optimally efficient individually, but the overall process efficiency will be optimized eliminating the common problem of efficiency losses and integration difficulties when combining two consecutive processes which also require to circulate flows between them. Plant operation will also benefit from the fact that impurity control will be on a global basis, rather than concentrated on certain parts of the process, hence, better results and more efficient control. The operation of equipment will be more effective and efficient. Further, proprietary technological equipment that focuses on maximizing plant performance, such as Dispersion Depletor Gate (DDG) Fences and Outokumpu Cathodes, will be applied throughout the plant as the design philosophy will be to utilize technology to maximize production.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) DURING the year 1878-79, Anton Eilers, who was then interested in the lead smelting and refining business near Salt Lake City, Utah, made a somewhat radical departure from the regular practice at that time, which was to use but little lime in the slag, with a high percentage of iron. Lime was not only a cheaper flux than iron, but it enabled the metallurgist to make a more siliceous slag, an economical advantage in smelting where the smelting companies had to purchase either iron or lime to neutralize the excess silica, and penalize the ore shippers accordingly. The larger amount of both lime and silica in the slag also made it of lighter specific gravity, and a better separation of the metals and mattes was secured. This change in the formation of slags for lead smelting was brought about by Anton Eilers, prior to the Leadville mining excitement of 1879. We must also give Mr. Eilers credit for the general introduction of the hollow water-cooled cast-iron jacket for the blast furnace. Again referring to the use of more lime and less iron in the formation of slags,. there is no doubt but that it prevents the formation of a great many so-called "sows" in the lead crucible, such as were made in the early history of lead smelting in the Rocky Mountains; these sows consisted of lead, iron, arsenic, sulphur, copper, and other metals, including gold and silver, mixed with unconsumed fuel, and often, after vain attempts to cut them up or melt them to a suitable size for handling, were buried in the slag clumps to get them out of-sight. Another advantage derived from the adoption of high-lime slags. when smelting ore containing arsenic is the production of less speiss (a by-product heavier than matte, resulting from careless operation of the furnace, the lead being driven out of the crucible and sows built up). This speiss, while usually not as rich in precious metals as matte made at the same time, is too valuable to be thrown away; but it is difficult to treat, and it was thrown away or piled on the slag clumps in the pioneer clays of lead smelting in this country.

Discussion of the paper of S. E. BRETHERTON, presented at. the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1595 to1599. ANTON EILERS, Brooklyn, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*). While the advantages in the use of high-line siliceous slags in lead smelting which Mr. Bretherton discusses in this paper are obvious under certain economical conditions, he gives me credit for the introduction of such slags when it does not belong to me. It is true I did considerable experimental work, off and on, for the purpose of finding such slags, while at the Germania in 1877 and 1878, but I did not have occasion to introduce any such slags for regular work, because I had no ores which fitted the economical conditions for using high silica and high lime, except in isolated cases for very brief periods. On the contrary, the ores I had to treat were mostly very ferruginous and very low in silica, so that, economically, I was compelled to run nearly always on slags, which allowed me to use the abundant flux I had without cost. It was August Raht who first had occasion to establish and use for long periods a slag high in silica and line, and low in iron. This was when he was confronted with the task of smelting the. Horn-Silver ores at the smelting works at Franklin, Utah, with as little expenditure for fluxing material as possible. I was at that time in Leadville, Col., where, in the new works I had built, the Billings and Eilers smelters, I had occasion to use profitably many slags, but never anything as high in the earthy bases and in silica as Mr. Raht had to use.

The excavation process and equipment used for excavation join firmly each other. By changing the process or method, the construction of equipment may be altered essentially. It has been possible to develop a wholy new type of hydraulic boom for tunnelling, when only parallel drilling instead of V-cut is used. The utilization of controlled blasting has made small holes more desirable. So the controlled blasting has had an influence on the selection of drill steel equipment and in this way also influenced the construction of the equipment.

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is twofold. Firstly, to drawn attention to recommendations which have been accepted by the International Atomic Energy Agency concerning radiometric reporting methods and calibration in uranium exploration, and secondly to emphasize the benefits that- will stem from adopting them. These recommendations are contained in an IAEA Technical Report, No. 174, which has been prepared with the intention of serving as a general guide to the subject. The existence of this specialized report is likely to be unknown to most of those who can benefit unless it is given some publicity by an organization such as the CIM. The recommendations were prepared by a small international committee consisting of Dr, P. H. Dodd , U.S .A. , Dr. R. L. Grasty. Canada, Dr. L. Levborg, Denmark, Dr. M. Matolin, Czechoslovakia , Dr. S. D. Simov, Bulgaria, and the writer.The fact that there are standard scientific units of mass, distance and time is taken for granted, It is also accepted that the type of instrumentation used to measure one of these parameters is irrelevant to the way the measurement is reported. Geophysical parameters such as magnetic field strength and gravity have generally accepted units, the gamma and milligal, which are defined in SI terms. These units are employed irrespective of the operating principle, or manufacturer or organization involved in the measurement."

"The old conventional process to produce lithium raw material dates from 1954 (CA patent #504477A). This process produces low purity lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) only. To obtain battery-grade carbonate, another polishing process is needed. To further obtain lithium hydroxide, another chemical conversion process is needed. That is why historically, the value of lithium hydroxide has always been higher than that of the lithium carbonate precursor. With the old conventional process, the low quality lithium carbonate is precipitated from a lithium sulfate solution (Li2SO4) by adding soda ash (sodium carbonate and its impurities). The resulting reaction produces significant quantities of sodium sulfate (salt cake) as a by-product with amounts larger than the impure Li2CO3 recovered with part of the soda impurities. When this conventional process was invented, the salt cake by-product was not an issue: it was discarded in a river near the plant. This practice cannot be done today in North America. While looking to find a solution for salt cake, electrolytic salt splitting of Na2SO4 into NaOH and dilute sulfuric acid appears as a technically feasible solution to get a rid of the salt cake. However, the sodium sulfate salt splitting process has difficulties to economically compete with the chlor-alkali process, which produces millions of tons of NaOH from sodium chloride (NaCl) every year.In contrast, the process developed by Nemaska to directly produce LiOH by Li2SO4 salt splitting not only solves the environmental problems related to the conventional process to produce lithium carbonate raw material, it also produces very high purity lithium hydroxide monohydrate directly at very competitive OPEX cost in comparison with industry peers (Figure 1). It also drastically reduces the amount of reagent and the direct greenhouse gas emissions."

Research projects contain many stages of development from the conception of an idea to a fullscale commercial operation. The transition from laboratory-scale research to bench-scale roasting can represent a significant increase in complexity and cost, depending on how many variables are being evaluated. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) can simulate roasting conditions and produce a small sample for chemical analysis or materials characterization. A simultaneous thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry (TG–DSC) can identify endothermic and exothermic reaction temperatures. Using thermal analysis, some of the process variables can be tested and eliminated such as ore and reagent blends, retention times, operating temperatures, and some atmospheres.

AT the time flotation appeared upon the metallurgical horizon in Arizona, the writer, under the direction of Dr. Ricketts, was engaged in remodeling and enlarging the No. 6 Concentration Plant of the Arizona Copper Co. at Morenci, and the work had been in progress nearly a year before the Inspiration experiments with flotation had disclosed the revolution in concentration that was at that timè impending. The simplified flowsheet worked out for the remodeling of the Morenci plant had been based upon the removal of the freed metal in a minimum number of stages by treatment upon tables equipped with Butchart riffles, the latter being adapted to accomplish both classification of feed and removal of the metal at one operation, substantially as described in my previous paper.1 The scheme of treatment for the slime was based upon the well-known fact that after copper sulphides, such as chalcocite and chalcopyrite, etc., are reduced to a certain extremely fine state of comminution they are definitely beyond the reach of separation upon any of the concentrating devices then known. By using drag-belt classifiers (which served as conveyors as well as separators), the overflow would be of the usual "slimes" class. Experiment had shown that when these drag-belt overflows were, properly diluted (that is, to about 5 to 7 per cent. solids in the feed under treatment) . the very fine sand, and especially the very fine but still granular sulphide particle's, would, if given a short distance to fall, quickly settle out in prime condition to yield an excellent recovery on vanners; a further valuable feature would be that the very fine non-separable final overflow tonnage might be discharged direct to tailing, thus conserving space requirements so as to permit within the old building, without embarrass-ment, the increase of capacity required.

In any treatment process that requires a coarse feed material to be reduced to a fine size by crushing and/or grinding it must be determined whether a wet or dry comminution system should be utilized. All factors must be evaluated in reaching the decision. Among these factors are: 1) Ecology and Plant Environment: Unfortunately in many instances the decision on wet or dry is based on prejudice resulting from an unnecessary fear of dust. The writers submit that this fear, although once justified, is no longer valid because technology and equipment is now available to collect dust to meet any standard. When dry grinding is used it is very often possible to discard a portion of the waste product in a dry state. This will decrease the size of the tailing pond required. As pollution control standards increase it becomes increasingly difficult to clean up water from tailing ponds. 2) Operating Costs: Steel wear is often five or more times greater in wet grinding than in dry grinding. This is mainly due to corrosion. The evaluation of the economics of dry grinding must of course include the air system and dust collection; similarly in a wet grinding plant related pumping and material handling costs should be included. Pumping costs are often overlooked. This assumes water is made to flow for nothing. Pumping can account for 20 percent of the power consumption in the grinding plant. Large scale comparative tests were conducted in a wet and dry commercial plant in 1970. The same ore was used for both tests. With all factors included in both plants the dry system showed lower horsepower per ton.

"Gravitational forces have been found to be an important factor in defining the particle collection efficiency curve of inertial impactors for large particles. In general it was found that if the parameter G = gW /V 0 2 (g is the gravitational acceleration. w is the nozzle diameter and V 0 is the average fluid velocity at the nozzle throat) in greater than 10-3 the efficiency curve would shift to lower panicle sizes. No effect could be seen for lower values of G.IN'IRODUCTIONInertial impactors have long been used as classifiers for airborne particles. By proper design of the nozzles and flow rate it is possible to classify particles with a fairly sharp cut in the particle size range from approximately .02 µm to 50 µm. Because of inertial impactors wide usage they have been extensively studied calibrated and evaluated. Most of these studies have been experimental calibrations of single stages using monodisperse aerosol particles. However, due to impactor simplicity. i.e. a jet of particle laden air impinging upon a flat plate with large inertia particles crossing the streamlines and impacting upon the plate the impactor also lends itself to theoretical evaluation.The most comprehensive method for analyzing impactors theoretically is to use finite difference solutions to the Navier-Stokcs equations and solve for the velocity components and pressure at node points of a grid placed over the area of interest. Using iteration and relaxation techniques the value of the velocity vectors can be determined at these node points with good accuracy. Once the velocities arc known, theoretical particles of known size can be placed into the now field and their trajectories determined by analyzing their equation of motion using numerical methods.Rader and Marple (1985) have performed theoretical analysis on impactors and have included such factors as Ultra-Stoksian .drag and the physical diameter of the particle in their analysis. However, even with these· factors included, there appears to be discrepancy · between the experimental and theoretical results when the particle size is larger than approximately 4 or 5 µm. One possible reason for this discrepancy could be the effect of gravity on the particle as it passes through the impactor. Therefore, a program was initiated to study the effects of gravitational forces on the collection· efficiency of particles in impactors. The results of that study arc presented here."

"INTRODUCTIONThe Afton Mines property is located 180 air miles east-northeast of Vancouver and nine miles west of Kamloops, a city of 60,000 people in south central British Columbia. The deposit is located adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway at an elevation of 2,231 feet above sea level.Interest in the property dates back to 1898, when a 330 foot shaft was sunk on the Pothook claim immediately south of the existing operations. Since that time many companies and individuals have investigated the possibilities of the area but it was not until 1972 that Afton Mines Ltd. located a significant zone of copper mineralization. The feasibility study was completed in the period 1974-1975, by Teck Corporation Ltd., who control Afton through 50% direct ownership and 65% ownership of Isa Mines, who own a further 23%. Construction began in March, 1976. Ore production started in August, 1977, and the first ore was fed to the mill on December 8. This was the third mine to be brought into operation by Teck since 1975, the others being Newfoundland Zinc and Niobec.The orebody is a porphyry copper deposit which has undergone supergene alteration. It is 1,700 feet long in a west-northwest by east-southeast direction, 300 feet wide and dips at 55° to the south. The mineralization in the supergene zone, which accounts for two-thirds of the known deposit, is rather unusual in that the copper is present primarily as native copper and chalcocite. The grade is one percent with the distribution: 70% native, 25% chalcocite, and 5% chalcopyrite with bornite, covellite, and cuprite."

The issues facing graduate training in the mineral processing industry are not too different today from those that prompted the initiation of the Anglo American Platinum Graduate Development Programme (AGDP) in 2002. Graduate metallurgists in South Africa enter the industry from different undergraduate programmes at various tertiary institutions, and so the knowledge and skills of the young graduates varies. Further, the geographical expansion of the industry combined with the downsizing of business units means that there are fewer opportunities for young graduates to be mentored through their first few years on site. Anglo American Platinum chose to address these issues by implementing an intensive, structured graduate training programme for all their new metallurgical graduates, known as the AGDP. The first two years of experience of the AGDP, from the viewpoints of both graduates and lecturers, were presented to the mineral processing community at the IMPC in Turkey in 2006 (Sweet et al, 2006). From the beginning, the programme was structured in a modular fashion to include a basic technical ?toolbox? including statistics, the scientific method and sampling protocols, while the mineral processing content comprised advanced learning in comminution, classification and flotation (later extended to include hydrometallurgy). Technical communication ? both written and verbal ? was included from the start. The programme was focussed very strongly on site work (?learning by doing?), with a major integrated site campaign conducted and analysed by each cohort. In 2012 the AGDP will accept its ninth cohort into the programme. This paper describes how Anglo American Platinum and the University of Cape Town have developed and adapted the programme over the last few years, in response to the challenges of the global recession, skills retention, and the changing operational needs of the company. The programme, which was drawn up to accommodate around 15 concentrator-only graduates, now accommodates 35-40 concentrator, smelter and refinery graduates annually. The programme has also been modified to facilitate new graduates spending most of their first year on the operations. Reduced downtime and maximized availability of mining machines are the key factors in optimizing production rates. As technology moves industry towards an age of ?intelligent machines? it sets the foundation for change in mining equipment design, functionality, and maintenance. Recent mining machine designs are integrating more and more electronic components into the core functionality of individual piece of equipment due to regulatory and legislative requirements, such as TIER rating, as well as from a safety aspect such as personal detection systems. This paper describes the use of existing on-board electronic equipment to increase machine availability through automated maintenance planning and diagnostic fault-finding capability. The automated maintenance planning takes place on the machine itself in order to be independent of the mine?s infrastructure, while the diagnostic capabilities allow for reduced downtime. The paper also presents a concept to transfer operational data to surface to be able to optimize planning of maintenance and to reduce downtime. Case studies are presented where such systems have been commissioned and are currently in operation, the possibilities of this technology application for the future are examined.

1750 to 1850: The scene shifts westward across the Alleghenys to the young town of Pittsburgh; charcoal gives way to mineral coal as furnaces grow larger and the blast is heated; above all, Pennsylvania iron is adding strength to the new Nation and building an empire in the West. TWO names are inseparably associated with the Pittsburgh iron industry-those of George Anschutz and John Hayden. The iron ore deposits of southeastern Pennsylvania were found and developed early in the 18th century, and several forges and furnaces were built and operated. It was only after the revolution that the iron men crossed the Susquehanna River, built furnaces in the neighborhood of ore deposits of Franklin County, then along the Juniata River and its valley. Juniata Iron found a ready market in the Pittsburgh area. However, difficulty in transporting it across the Allegheny Mountains induced iron mas¬ters to seek ore and plant locations in the Pittsburgh district. One of the first to reach this area was George Anschutz, who migrated to America in 1789 at the age of 36, reaching Pittsburgh in the fall of 1790. Anschutz immediately set out to organize an iron company in Pittsburgh, and was able to interest some residents in his project. After being informed of an iron ore deposit located only three miles out of town (on the site of the present 26th St. and the Allegheny River) he decided to build there his blast furnace and foundry plant. Total cost of the installation was $300. When the furnace was put in operation, Anschutz, now known as Red George, found that the ore deposit was only an insignificant one and would last no more than a few weeks. A new deposit was found on Roaring Run, in the southeastern corner of Armstrong County. Anschutz transported some of this ore to the mouth of Two Mile Run, where it was loaded on horse wagons and transported to the furnace. It is known that the axial capacity of a displacement piles installed in clay varies with time. Consolidation theory suggests that dissipation of porewater pressure set-up during pile installation would lead to increased effective stress and hence higher pile resistance. In recent years a number of case histories have reported time dependent capacity increases for piles installed in sand. Although there is some debate regarding the physical mechanisms controlling this phenomenon, known as ageing, it is unrelated to pore pressure dissipation as piles in sand are installed in primarily drained conditions. A series of field tests designed to investigate ageing effects in soft clay are presented in this paper. Full-scale load tests on 6m long 250 mm square concrete piles, which were driven into soft clay are described. The piles were first tested approximately 100 days after installation, at which stage full equalization of the excess pore pressures had occurred. Static load tests were then performed up to 10 years after pile installation. The piles exhibited significant ageing, with their shaft resistance increasing by up to 66% over a 10 year period. Possible mechanisms for such aging characteristics are explored.

European Union's transition to a low-carbon and digital economy highly depends on securing the strategic autonomy of the Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) supply chain. This paper introduces a European Commission-funded research and innovation action, AGEMERA, which aims to create detailed geological and people's concerns maps to unlock the CRMs potential in Europe. Furthermore, the project will develop educational packages for schools and universities, publish online CRM-related games and news flashes, and arrange public events to ensure a basis for socially accepted and sustainable exploration and mining of CRMs in Europe. 1. IntroductionCritical Raw Materials (CRMs), crucial for shifting to a low-carbon and digital economy, should focus on maintaining Europe's overall supply-demand balance (Birol, 2022). Therefore, to proactively address the surge in demand and ensure the strategic autonomy of European industrial supply chains, the exploration and extraction of CRMs must be scaled out across the continent. Moreover, mobilizing Europe's domestic potential is vital for the EU to become more resilient and to establish open strategic autonomy as the demand for CRMs continues to increase quickly on a global scale (European Commission, 2021). Base metal extraction and mining have a long history in Europe. Nevertheless, CRMs mining projects have shown less success, although these have a lot of potential (Guzik et al., 2021). The main barriers are a lack of investment in mining and exploration, complicated and drawn-out national permitting processes, and low levels of public support (European Commission, 2020). It is necessary to have a vast amount of knowledge and intelligence about CRM's potential and market impact. Novel non-invasive geophysical survey techniques that enable sustainable exploration must be created and used to enhance mineral system models of ore deposits incorporating CRMs. The minerals policy framework significantly influences the mining industry's performance, stability, and sustainability. However, the EU Member States' mineral policy frameworks differ significantly (MINLEX, 2017). In addition, the Fraser Institute Annual Survey of Mining Companies offers concrete information on how managers and executives of mining companies view key policy areas that impact mining activities in the jurisdiction in which they operate or are familiar (Jackson & Green, 2015).

Discussion of the paper of William H. Emmons, presented at the Canal Zone meeting, November, 1910, and printed in Bulletin No. 46, October, 1910, pp. 767 to S37. CHARLES R,. KEYES, Des Moines, Ia. (communication to the Secretary*) :-It is not in a spirit of criticism that I offer a supplemental suggestion or two on the subjects covered by this valuable and highly instructive memoir. There are two points which, in my opinion, should have received greater emphasis in Mr. Emmons's excellent paper. One is the fundamental role played by the chlorides under certain conditions in ore-formation. The other is the possible establishment of geographic relationships among the four phenomena of (1) excessive chloridic content of mine-waters; (2) the abundance of chloridic compounds of the precious metals ; (3) the presence of. manganese oxides; and (4) the diminishing importance, in ore-genesis, of the metallic sulphates. Although Mr. Emmons's notes refer to gold alone, it may be pertinently asked whether the same principles do not hold good for silver and copper also, since these metals form, together with gold, a distinct and well-known chemical group. That the reactions involved apply equally well to the other two metals mentioned, is shown by a number of recent observations and discussions. Chloridic ores of silver are, as I have lately endeavored to show, mainly worked in. arid or desert regions only ; and the great deposits of disseminated copper-ores are similarly characteristic of such regions, in which both classes doubtless owe their formation to the abundance of saline materials derived from desert dusts, and to the .plentiful and almost universal presence of manganese oxide.
