Non-electric systems, specifically shock tube, have become the pyrotechnic detonator of choice over electric due to their safety regarding accidental initiation from stray radio signals. Typically, the best practice when hooking up shock tube systems is to have direct contact to ensure initiation. When gaps are introduced to the explosives chain, there is potential for detonation to come to a halt. It is understood that direct coupling is required between the various elements in the explosive chain to ensure detonation. This holds true whether tying in non-electric detonators, loading holes in a mining related blast, or priming a block of C-4. Poor contact and gaps in the explosives chain can lead to detonators firing out sequence, leading to increased vibration, air overpressure, and other undesirable blast results. Furthering work conducted in previous experimentation, a new study was conducted at the Missouri University of Science and Technology’s Experimental Mine in Rolla, Missouri to observe the initiation potential of an air gap and fragmentation on non-electric shock tube. A series of small test blasts were conducted using 50 grain detonating cord and fragments from a blasting cap to initiate a non-electric shock tube across an air gap of varying distances. The data collected in the high-speed imagery was used to analyze the velocity of the pressure fronts and blasting cap fragments used to initiate non-electric shock tubes across an air gap. It was found that the shock tube was sensitive to 50 grain det cord at a 5cm (1.97in) distance while parallel and 10cm (3.94in) when perpendicular as well as sensitive to frag from the electric cap out to 2.4m (7.87ft).

A better understanding of the detonation performance of an explosive charge can be gained by directly measuring pressure, temperature and velocity of detonation (VOD). This is particularly important with explosives used in the mining industry because their performance is directly influenced by the degree of confinement given by the borehole diameter and the surrounding rock mass. A project funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) was initiated in early 2009 with the view to design and build cost-effective prototype instrumentation to measure the relative differences in detonation pressures and temperatures of commercial mining explosives. The project’s primary focus was on low-density explosives. Low-density (also referred to as low shock) explosives have been available in various forms for nearly 20 years. There have been significant advances in the availability, reliability and flexibility of these explosives, which now offer a range of densities and degrees of water resistance. Their detonation performance is not well understood and cannot be accurately predicted with current ideal and non-ideal detonation codes. It was therefore viewed as important to be able to directly measure pressure and temperature during the detonation process of these complex mixtures in production blastholes. Identifying the pressure release patterns of both conventional and low-density explosives under different geotechnical conditions should provide the necessary information to both validate detonation codes and better define input parameters for breakage and fragmentation models. This paper gives a general description of the prototype instrumentation developed and reports on the results obtained to date in full-scale conditions.

The high temperature and high pressure of an explosive detonation can be used for the production of nanomaterials. The controlled detonation of explosive compositions along with the collection and characterization of reaction products encompasses a process known as detonation synthesis. The primary advantage of the method of detonation synthesis is the possibility for producing monocrystalline nanoparticles with diameters of less than 10 nm. In order to successfully synthesize nanomaterials via the detonation process, it is necessary that the explosive detonation is conducted in a sealed environment. This environment when pulled to a vacuum or purged with inert gas such as argon will reduce the oxidation of detonation reaction products. Detonation synthesis testing is currently being conducted in a 1.8 cubic meters (m3) (64.3 cubic feet (ft3)) ellipsoidal pressure vessel consisting of two interlocking half shells. The testing involves the controlled detonation of cast mixtures of Cyclotrimethylene-trinitramine (RDX) and 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene (TNT) in conjunction with siliceous compounds to produce nanocrystalline diamond and silicon carbide. Alternative detonation environments including the presence of a cooling medium such as water or dry ice to absorb residual, post detonation, thermal energy and enhance the stability of the materials being produced have improved yield. Modifications to the explosive charge composition have an effect on the type and quantity of materials that can be produced. Doping of explosive charges with various organic and inorganic compounds has shown promise in the synthesis of materials that are difficult or uneconomical to produce through other methods. This paper outlines the process development of detonation synthesis facilities. Preparation of the pressure vessel to create a suitable detonation environment for the production of nanomaterials is examined. Formulation of explosive charge compositions and considerations involving test charge initiation are discussed in detail. Experimental results and analysis from initial testing as well as plans for future research are also evaluated.

The? use of hydrogen peroxide to detoxify gold mill waste waters containing cyanide and other toxic substances is already an established technology. Recent advances have extended the range of application of hydrogen peroxide treatment to include the removal of complex iron cyanides, the simultaneous removal of cyanide and toxic metals down to very low levels and treatment of barren bleeds, CIP' pulps and tailings pond discharges. Three treatment plants are described here. Each was installed at a gold mine in North America in 1987 and each illustrates a different application of hydrogen peroxide. The need for individual design of the detoxification plant to fit particular requirements is shown by the examples chosen.

The emphasis in the title of this paper should be placed on the world "Total", since the detoxification of cyanide in its free and weakly-complexed form with H202 has already found application in many areas, including the treatment of mining effluents. One of the most common forms of cyanide found in gold-mill effluents is hexacyanoferrate (usually ferrocyanide), which is included in measurements of total cyanide but is too stable to be oxidized by H202 or any other conventional oxidizing agent. This has led to the view that H202 cannot be used to detoxify effluents containing hexacyanoferrates, when a limit has been set on total cyanide. A process is described in this paper which does meet this requirement, and which has already been demonstated in two Canadian gold mills. Before describing the new process, the terms "free", "total" and "weakly-complexed" cyanide will be defined as they are used in this paper.

An extensive drilling and laboratory testing program indicates that diagenetic dolomitization of the Oligocene Sombrerito Fm. limestone, southwestern Dominican Republic, is detrimental to the usefulness and quality of the potential construction aggregate resource. The first part of this program was the collection, photographing, and geologic logging of diamond drill cores to allow lithologic subdivision of the strata into potential quarry layers. The primary lithostratigraphic units are: I (youngest) approximately 10 m of white, dense marine limestone; II, approximately 5 m of white, interbedded dense and chalky marine limestone; III, 2+ m of tan, chalky calcitic dolomite. Unit I has been often altered by lateritic weathering and/or dolomitization; Unit II is often altered by dolomitization. The quarry layers were individually crushed, by core, into coarse aggregate sizes for chemical and physical (specific gravity absorption, MgSO4 soundness, sand equivalent, and LA degradation) analyses. The non-weathered units decrease in coarse-aggregate yield and quality with depth and dolomitization. Dolomitization typically causes about 5% lower yield of coarse aggregate, a sand equivalent of about 20 units below the original value, an increase in absorption of about 3%, an increase in the LA of up to 13%, and a decrease in the average 5-cycle MgSO4 soundness by about 17%.

Detrital minerals of mantle origin have been found in the Green River Basin of Southwestern Wyoming (Figure 1). Pyrope, pyrope-almandine, and chrome-bearing clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene occur on the antmounds of Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis. These antmounds are a common sight throughout the western U.S., and were used by early paleontologists as fossil mammal collection sites. The mound is composed of two types of material; (1) soil excavated during the digging of the nest below the surface (maximum depth 3 meters) and (2) larger grains collected from the surface and placed on the mound, probably to prevent erosion. The selection of grains to armor the mound seems to be based largely on the mean diameter of the grain, with other factors such as weight, sphericity, roundness and composition in decreasing order of importance (Wheeler and Wheeler, 1963). The minerals of this study happen to fall within that mean diameter range. The garnets are found on the mounds as 3-6 mm diameter subrounded to subangular grains. The pyroxenes are also 3-6 mm in diameter and are most commonly subangular laths. The minerals themselves show evidence of abrasion, such as frosted surfaces and rounded edges. Orange peel texture is present on some of the grains, which suggests that kelyphitic rims were once present, but have been removed. Also, no similar minerals were found in sieved soil auger samples to depths of 2 to 6 meters taken near the antmounds. These observations imply a distal rather than proximal source for the minerals. Lamproitic rocks of upper mantle origin are found bordering the "Green River Basin. The best known are the Leucite Hills, a series of ultrapotassic volcanics found on the north flank of the Rock Springs Uplift (Carmichael, 1967). Minor occurrences of mica peridotite and ultrapotassic volcanics are also found on the western end of the Uinta Mountains in Utah (Best, et al, 1968). None of these rocks are known to contain minerals like those on the antmounds. The garnets are comprised of purple chrome pyrope, red chrome pyrope-almandine, and pink to orange low chrome pyrope/pyrope-almandine. Oxide statistics for these groups are summarized in Table 1. These three groups are distinct when their Cr203 values are plotted against magnesium number (Figure 2). The chrome pyropes are highest in Cr203 (1.28-2.66%) and have high, restricted Mg number values (0.781-0.826). The chrome pyrope almandines have similarly high Cr203 (1.29-2.62%) but a lower Mg number range. The low chrome pyrope/pyrope-almandines have the lowest Cr203 content (0.09-0.73) and the widest Mg number range (0.534-0.836). Using the classification scheme of Dawson and Stephens (1975) the chrome pyropes are most similar to garnets derived from kimberlite and from garnet lherzolite, websterite, and harzburgite xenoliths in kimberlite. The chrome pyrope-almandines and the low chrome pyrope/ pyrope almandines are similar to garnets derived from eclogite nodules (Figure 3).

At the New York meeting of the Institute of Metals Division in February, 1927, Jeffries and Tarasov presented a paper on Tungsten and Thoria,' in which the experimental facts were interpreted in accordance with the prevailing point of view that the thorium is present as the oxide, thoria. In discussing that paper the writer of this article stated that his own investigations, which had been unavailable to Messrs. Jeffries and Tarasov, showed that the so-called "thoriated" tungsten filament failed to disclose any sign of the oxide when subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis, but did give plenty of evidence of the presence of metallic thorium and, in certain cases, of a material believed to be an alloy of tungsten in thorium. Since these results were completely at variance with the results reported in the paper under discussion and with other papcrs which had preceded it from time to time in the past, it was felt that further discussion should be withheld until the new evidence could be presented adequately. Arrangc-mcnts were therefore made to present that evidence at this meeting. Material Examined The material exalllined was high-ernission filament such as is used in radio tubes, supposed to contain about 0.75 per cent. thoria. The actual analysis was not stated. Scope of the Investigation The investigation was undertaken because of a feeling that the thorium present in filamentary material of this type exists as metallic thorium or as an alloy of thorium and tungsten and not as the oxide. Attention was therefore directed to determining: 1. The minimum amount of thoria detectible in a mechanical mixture of thoria powder and finely divided tungsten. 2. The amount of t.horia detectible in the filament. 3. The condition of any thorium present in other form than as thoria. 4. The amount of thorium dissolved in the tungsten.

Although brasses and bronzes have been made for ages, a systematic study of their physical properties has been carried out only during the years of the present century. Among these properties may be included those which are to be detected by means of microscopic examination; in other words by the science of metallography. The earlier workers in this field, both in this country and abroad, gave their attention to steel. When the senior author explored the situation in 1902, there was little encouragement to be found in undertaking the study of the non-ferrous alloys. A start was made, and the metallography of the brasses and bronzes, as well as of the copper-nickel-zinc alloys developed materially under his direction. Annealing experiments were begun in 1902, and in the succeeding years the effect of temperature, and the influence of previous working, on the grain size of brass were studied. The conclusions so well known and widely published today were largely reached during those earlier years. In 1905 the first complete annealing series were made. By this it is meant that brass and copper sheet, 5 B & S Nos. hard, was machined into tensile test specimens, then annealed under accurate control for 30 min. at temperatures up to the melting point of the material. Various determinations were made, including tensile strength and elongation in 2 in. There rapidly followed similar series on all of the copper-zinc alloys from 100 to 60 per cent, copper, on the bronzes, cupronickels, and on copper-zinc-nickel alloys. At this point there was published by Grard, in October, 1909,' the very comprehensive and complete work on the tensile properties of cartridge brass, 90-10 copper-zinc, and electrolytic copper. The excellent photomicrographs in that paper illustrated the changes in structure produced by cold rolling as well as by annealing at different temperatures, but where Grard's work was confined to copper and to two alloys, the investigations in this laboratory have been over the entire fields of the commercial copper-zinc alloys, copper-tin alloys, representative copper-nickel and copper-nickel-zinc alloys as well as aluminum bronzes and others of a more special nature.

Those chemists (they are still greatly in the minority) who use the spectroscope, use it very often, and find it almost indispensable. As a means of detecting minute quantities of the metals it is unrivalled. A metal can be readily distinguished in the presence of any other element, compound, or mixture without the necessity of separation. The qualitative analysis of the metallic constituents of a substance, which the spectroscope gives so easily, is a sure basis for planning a chemical analysis. As the determination of each element proceeds the purity of precipitates may be checked as often as desired. If, possessing these advantages, the spectroscope has been neglected in general chemistry, it is not surprising that it was neglected in metallurgical chemistry; for many of the impurities which are of industrial interest, even when they are present in a metal or alloy in small quantities, are not then always easily detected by the examination of their visible spectrum. The history of the development of the art has been given in Bureau of Standards 19cientific Paper No. 444. The Development of Analysis by Spectrogbaphy Fig. 1 shows, by means of photographs taken with a quartz spectro-graph, what a valuable region of the spectrum is excluded if one has a visual instrument only. Wave length 4023 is about the end of the visible spectrum, the region from 3800 to 1854 being invisible. It is easy to understand then how it is that the vigorous resuscitation of spectrum analysis which has commenced in the last few years has been associated with the use of the quartz spectrograph; notwithstanding that the most useful instrument for the general inorganic chemist to have at his elbow, after the balance, is a good visual spectrometer.(1) 1 The revival of spectrum analysis is to be attributed chiefly to the work of W. The plastic deformation of slender single crystals of zinc has been described in some detail in the paper by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid,' which has become a classic, and also by one of the present authors in a somewhat shorter account. 2 The study of single-crystal zinc is termed classical because zinc single crystals offer, perhaps, the best material yet available for the study of atomic behavior during deformation and the effect known as "strengthening" in metals. A considerable amount of additional work has also been done on single-crystal zinc, but as it is not closely related to the present paper it will not be considered. Throughout all the former work, the mechanism of plastic deformation first described by Mark, Polanyi and Schmid has been assumed to hold. This may be said to offer the strongest confirmation of its correctness. Even so, the picture of the process has never been as completely portrayed as is desirable. The first object of the present paper is to describe work that has been done in this field, and which is even yet being carried on, in the hope that a more complete picture may be obtained. Mathewson and Phillips3 have recently described a new mechanism of the deformation of zinc based on their study of large rectangular crystals. One of their conclusions was that deformation produced twinning with a rotation of some of the basal planes into positions 94" removed from their original position; a position almost the same as that of the prismatic planes before twinning. A second conclusion was that fracture occurred along these basal planes in their new position, and, therefore that fractures previously regarded as prismatic were in reality basal. Such findings are of great significance and they raise a question as to the generality of such behavior. Professor Mathewson's opinion is that even the slender cylindrical single crystals behave in the same manner as his large rectangular crystals when strained by simple tension.

I. INTRODUCTION. THIS cavern was discovered Oct. 22, 1904, by Mr. Charles H. Deutschman, in company with whom I made, May 29 to June 3, 1905, at the request of Mr. Howard Douglas, Superintendent of the Canadian National Parks, the first exploration of it for the Canadian government. The results were stated in a paper, orally presented, with lantern-views from my photographs, at the British Columbia Meeting of the Institute, Victoria,, B. C., July 5, 1905.* The present paper embodies also the results of a second examination, made Oct. 25 to 29, 1905. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, will serve as a guide to the following description. II. LOCATION. The cavern is situated at snow-line, at the head-waters of Cougar creek, on the west slopes of the Selkirks, about 2 miles north from Ross Peak water-tank, and 5.5 miles west from Glacier House, on the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was then reached by an arduous climb from the water-tank, up the ravine of Cougar creek, for 8,000 ft. (2,000 ft. of altitude) over rock- and snow-slides, and through a thick tangle of alders. But an easy and very picturesque trail has, during the past summer, been opened by the government from Glacier House. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 represent views, not heretofore published, of the grand scenery of this region, so rapidly becoming the-object of attraction to thousands of tourists from all parts of the world. Chalcocite concentrate obtained by magnetic separation and flotation of Bessemer matte is processed in the Inca top blowing bottom stirring MK reactor into semi-blister copper. The semi-blister is then converted into blister copper in the multi-purpose vessels (MPV) by oxidation of iron, nickel and sulphur. High melting point NiO and Fe30 4 are formed inside the MPV s, which together with Cu20 and smaller amount of fayalite are the major constituents of the solid mush. The accumulation of solid mush and buildup requires periodic MPV cleaning by adding reductant and copper-nickel matte, a unique process called "washout". Various reductants and their combinations, such as pig-iron, 15%Si Ferro-silicon and 50%Si Ferro-silicon, have been used for the reduction of solid mush and buildup. The possibilities of using calcium carbide as a reductant and slagging flux were examined experimentally at the crucible scale. The rate of reduction of MPV buildup was determined by continuous measurement of CO and C02 contents in the offgas and the flowrate of argon carrier gas. The rate of the buildup reduction with calcium carbide was approximately five times faster than the rate of reduction with coke. Additionally, the formation of CaO results in the melting of reduced buildup and formation of a slag at 1300°C and higher temperatures. It was found that simultaneous silica addition enhanced the melting and slag formation. The results showed the strong dependence of the reduction rate on temperature. Activation energy is approximately 225 kJ/mol. Expected benefits of using calcium carbide are related to cost saving on reductant, significant acceleration of solid mush reduction, and reduced amount iron input from reductant.

At its Copper Cliff Smelter, bulk nickel and copper concentrate is processed in two Inca flash furnaces and Peirce Smith converters to produce Bessemer matte containing 0.6%Fe. After slow cooling and Matte Separation, Bessemer matte is converted into three main products using magnetic separation and flotation technology: (1) a nickel containing chalcocite concentrate (MK); (2) two types of copper containing nickel sulfide (ME and MR); (3) metallics (MYN). MK is further processed in the Inca top blowing bottom stirring MK Reactor to produce semi-blister copper containing ~4%Ni and ~3±1 %S. The semi-blister copper is then purified in the multi-purpose vessels (MPV) to produce blister copper by reducing Ni, Fe and S content through oxidation. High melting point NiO is formed inside the MPVs. The accumulation of solid NiO and other oxides requires periodic cleaning by adding reductant and furnace matte, a unique process called "washout" at Inca. For many years, the reductant used for the "washout" process has been 15%Si Ferro-silicon. With increasing cost and limited suppliers for 15%FeSi, alternative reductants were pursued. This paper summarizes the development and commercialization of new alternative reductants for MPV "washout".

There was a time when heavy-duty apron feeders were built to last almost forever. The machines were heavy and built to maintain certain expected longevity and reliability. Increasing emphasis on return on capital leads to cost-effective designs. Costs can be increased or decreased, depending on customer specifications and the design philosophy of the feeder manufacturer. Specifiers can make important contributions to cost effectiveness. To do so, this article describes what should be known about planning with a supplier for heavy-duty apron feeders. There are several factors that should be considered, including capacity, characteristics of material carried, length, method of feeder loading, degree of lift, hopper opening, pan construction, and type of drive. Today's apron feeders are built in various sizes and with a variety of components to handle heavy, lumpy, or abrasive materials that can ruin lighter feeders. Careful feeder selection is important if it is to provide a controlled feed rate, absorb huge impacts, be used with long hopper openings, and have a relatively low power-perton capacity. Variations in systems and materials demand that each feeder be designed for its application, drawing on a wide range of components. Therefore, certain factors must be considered before final specifications are drawn. Capacity The design and application of an apron feeder is based on how material passes through a given system over the feeder into processing machinery. The processing machinery's capacity governs other equipment and productivity of the flow. From this basic information, related sizes of upstream equipment can be determined. Of these, the apron feeder acts as the "mouth and neck of the bottle." No more will pass than the mouth and neck will accommodate. Everything in the apron feeder design, from dimensions to power, is based on processing machinery. Material Considerations Are Vital Just as the nature of materials to be crushed or screened affects capacity and productivity of a crusher or a grinding mill, so does it affect capacity and performance of a feeder. Lump size must be identified closely so the pan width can be selected to accommodate the maximum lump with room to spare. For example, a lump size of 760 mm (30 in.) indicates a pan width of 1.5 m (60 in.) While two times the maximum lump is considered minimum width, if the maximum lump

"Mineral texture is a critical factor which controls ore variability and is an important attribute in geometallurgy. In relation to downstream processes, it affects the fracture pattern during breakage, where rock strength is inherently a function of mineral texture. Because of the subjective nature of mineral texture, it has not been easy to quantify, especially in the context of a measurement suitable for use in geometallurgical programmes. The aim of this paper is to present the first steps in developing a 3D mineral texture quantification method for drill core and to assess its sensitivity to differences in rock strength using a case study. The methodology includes classifying the textural information using the 3D grey level co-occurrence matrices (GLCM) and X-ray computed tomography (XCT) coupled method. Rock strength tests were performed using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The case study investigates a heterogeneous polymetallic sulphide deposit and a homogeneous shale subdivided into three ’mineral textural types’. The variability is largely captured by the GLCM matrices, and preliminary trends can be observed where the shale is finer grained and has a higher yield strength in comparison with the coarser grained polymetallic sulphide ore. IntroductionModern mining requires the exploitation of lower grade and more complex, heterogeneous orebodies to address the growing industry demands. Historically, processing plants were designed and built based on average ore characteristics and therefore are relatively inflexible when facing the full spectrum of ore variability in heterogeneous orebodies (Lamberg, 2011; Lotter, 2011; Schouwstra et al., 2013). The practice of geometallurgy represents an opportunity to manage ore variability in the mining industry (Powell 2013; Baum, 2014; Yildirim et al., 2014; Nguyen, 2013). It focuses on quantifying the relationships between ore characteristics and their downstream mining and processing responses, often starting with small-scale laboratory testing. The purpose of geometallurgy is linked to maximizing the net present value (NPV) of an orebody by minimizing technical and operational risk – where ‘ore variability’ is considered one of the most significant technical risks."

This paper describes a collaborative project undertaken by Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest) and pitt&sherry to identify, develop and then implement global best practices to manage the exposure to inrush (dry and mud) hazards in underground mining operations. An extensive literature review was undertaken to identify past experience globally and the current state of knowledge and practice in managing inrush hazard. A key requirement of the literature review was the development of a list of guiding questions which would form a framework for approaching operators to discuss the topic, capture recent learnings and understand current operating practices to allow the development of a best practice solution. An initial cohort of 14 mines across four continents chose to contribute and detailed interviews were carried out by the project team. The outcome from the literature review, interviews with participating mines and various internal discussions was a comprehensive summary document detailing Basic versus Best Practice management of the inrush hazard. This document is being used as a gap analysis tool by Newcrest to assess and guide the management of inrush hazard at their existing and future operations. The summary document has also been provided to the participating mines for their consideration. The project is iterative and will continue to evolve as new experiences, knowledge and practices come to light.

"Productivity in openpit mines depends on the observation and adjustment of critical phases of operation. As one of the most expensive activities in openpit production, optimization of the load-haul-dump cycle becomes a critical aspect to address. Using simulation techniques and an ad hoc methodology for analyzing the key performance indicators (KPIs) involved in the production cycle, it is possible to compare actual performance and ideal operating conditions and develop an alert system when operating conditions are subpar with the expected production standards.Study objectivesThe purpose of this work is to implement a methodology for optimizing the haulage cycle by identifying and adjusting the factors that affect the cycle time performance. The methodology includes the implementation of an alert system emitting warning messages when one or several trucks are idle, or when the time of completing production tasks is falling outside a predefined value. This alert is compared with predefined KPIs and is used to determine corrective actions.The alert will:• Demonstrate the benefits of time analysis and how this affects the productivity results in the mining process.• Demonstrate the utility of KPIs in the extraction of ore and waste and how they help to identify equipment performance.• Develop software interfaces to visualize the alert system in order to increase awareness in the operations supervisor.• Make recommendations for future applications that can help improve the productive process of an openpit mine.Problem statementTransporting material in openpit mines may require the utilization of high capacity equipment, which also represents an elevated cost per hour. A supervisory system that controls the adequate distribution of trucks and shovels by providing the operational status of each unit shall contribute to increase productivity while subsequently reducing operational costs. Nevertheless, there is an issue with certain dead times such as queue trucks for loading, trucks waiting to be loaded and other delays. This creates inefficiencies in fuel consumption and energy utilization.For the identification of delays, a contextbased system could be required in order to help optimize the haulage cycle time by controlling delays in loading, haulage and dumping. After applying this methodology, efforts were focused in correcting out-of-standard performance values."
