Roadheaders have become widely used in underground mining and tunneling operations because they offer the flexibility to excavate soft- to medium-strength rock formations. A critical issue in successful roadheader application is the ability to develop accurate and reliable estimates of machine production capacity and the associated bit costs. Increased pressure to improve productivity and lower costs in the mining and civil construction industries has been the driving force behind the more wide- spread use of mechanical excavation systems. This has caused both industries to move away from the conventional drill and blast methods. Additional benefits of mechanical mining include improved safety, reduced ground support requirements and fewer personnel. These advantages, coupled with recent enhancements in machine performance and reliability, have resulted in mechanical miners taking a larger share of the rock excavation market. Roadheaders are the most widely used underground partial-face excavation machines for soft- to medium- strength rocks, particularly for sedimentary rocks. They are used for development and production in soft rock mining (main haulage drifts, roadways and crosscuts), particularly in coal, industrial minerals and evaporitic rocks. In civil construction, roadheaders are used to excavate railways, roadways, and sewer and diversion tunnels in soft ground conditions. They are also used to enlarge and rehabilitate underground structures. Their ability to excavate almost any profile opening also makes them attractive to those mining and civil construction projects where various opening sizes and profiles are needed. In addition to their high mobility and versatility roadheaders are generally low capital cost systems com- pared with most other mechanical excavators. Because of higher cutting-power density due to a smaller cutting drum, roadheaders can excavate rocks harder and more abrasive than continuous miners and borers.

Roadheaders offer a unique capability and flexibility for the excavation of soft to medium strength rock formations, therefore, are very attractive in underground mining and tunneling operations. This paper reviews the importance, technological developments and application limits of roadheaders based on the case histories, which are compiled in a database including different roadheaders in various geological conditions. The paper also discusses the database and empirical performance prediction studies regarding instantaneous cutting rates and bit consumption rates.

The White River Shale Oil Corporation (WRSOC) is developing a prototype oil shale facility on Federal Lease Tracts Ua and Ub located in northeastern Utah. This paper covers the successful driving of 1,525 m (5,000 ft) of dogleg downgrade decline with a 70-ton Paurat Roadheader mining machine and a conveyor muck-handling system. Ground support is with rock bolt and shotcrete; welded wire mesh is optional. The Upper Decline of 3.89 m by 8.69 m (12.75 ft by 28.5 ft) was mined through the Uinta Formation sandstones and shales in 210 days. The sandstones have a compressive strength in the 48 MPa (7,000 psi) range with a few bands of shale up to 137.8 MPa (20,000 psi). Green River Formation dolomitic marlstone with some sandstone lenses was mined in the Lower Decline 3.89 m by 5.64 m (12.75 ft by 18.5 ft) in 175 days. The Green River marlstones are tough massive formations ranging up to 206.8 MPa (30,000 psi). Roadheaders for use on steep slopes must be modified to accommodate the particular problems associated with mining downdip. The paper concentrates on the application of Roadheaders to steep slopes and the problems of mining tough materials such as marlstone. The paper also shows the advantage of using the method of excavation on long drives.

An extensive study involving laboratory testing and computer modeling has been performed to assess the technical and economic feasibility of utilizing the recently developed minidisc cutters on roadheaders for hard rock mining. The results show that heavy duty roadheaders fitted with minidiscs can excavate hard rock formations at acceptable production rates and cutter costs. This paper presents and discusses the results of this study together with the ongoing developmental efforts of this technology, which include laboratory testing of a roadheader cutting drum with minidiscs and full scale field testing of a machine in hard rock

Drift excavation by boom-type roadheaders in the San Manuel and Kalamazoo sulfide copper ore bodies has been successfully demonstrated. Geomechanical rock classification in conjunction with detailed geologic mapping has been necessary to assess roadheader performance, and to predict advance rates in the varied rock classes in the San Manuel block caving mine. Rapid excavation and less fractured ground are obvious advantages of roadheader drift excavation over conventional drill and blast techniques. The geomechanical system of Engineers International (1984) can be an effective roadheader performance and ground support tool.

The 4th bore of the Caldecott Tunnel is a 50-ft horseshoe shaped highway tunnel located in the hills east of Oakland, California. Tunnel excavation was mostly completed using one of the world?s largest commercially available roadheaders, a Wirth T3.20. The geologic profile included seven different geologic units, which displayed a range of different behavior with regard to excavation and initial support. Following a brief introduction to the excavation and support methods, this paper will discuss roadheader performance in the various geologic units encountered during excavation. Comments will also be made concerning the relationship between the roadheader method of excavation and observed ground convergence during excavation.

The Standley Lake Dam Rehabilitation Project in Colorado included the complete replacement of the outlet works. This required two 1.8m (6 ft) diameter microtunneled wet lake taps, 380m and 186m (1246 ft and 636 ft) long, a permanent valve shaft 12.2m(40 ft) wide and 32m (105 ft) deep, and a 3.5m (11.5 ft) diameter (962 foot long) outlet tunnel driven with a roadheader. The tunnels were driven in low-strength, expansive, and slickensided claystone. The paper addresses the site investigation, shaft construction, roadheader performance, shotcrete placement, tunnel convergence, long distance microtunneling, and wet lake taps.

Central Colliery was developed to exploit large underground reserves in the German Creek lease. It was planned from the outset as a retreating longwall operation and is the first longwall mine in Queensland. Longwall mining is not new to Australia but all previous experience has been confined to the coalfields of New South Wales. There was no precedent for longwall extraction in the markedly different geological setting of the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland. Various investigations were thus carried out during the initial development of Central Colliery, prior to the installation of the longwall, to ascertain the geotechnical characteristics of the coal seam and the adjacent strata and to predict the performance of the heading and pillar design as mining proceeds to depth. Laboratory tests showed the coal to be weak with an unconfined compressive strength of 9.6 MN/m2. Site inspection and geophysical correlation revealed a shear zone and extensive intraformational shear planes in the seam. The latter were found to exert a controlling influence on rib reaction in the headings. This behaviour was predicted by finite element modelling of the development headings which indicated that mining induced stresses in the coal would be relieved by block movement of the ribs. A chain pillar width versus depth curve was established for yielding pillar design based on empirical and computational methods. This gave pillar widths from 25m to 48m over the proposed depth range of 150m to 300m. Finite element modelling of the 25m pillars chosen for the first gateroads confirmed the overall stability of the design but suggested that rib spall could be significant in the adjacent tailgate. Reflective in-seam wave detection has the advantages of a far detection range and wide applicability. It has been successfully used in detection of many abnormal geological structures in work-faces, such as faults and collapse columns. However, a reflective in-seam wave is a dispersion wave. It has weak energy and is always covered by the direct in-seam wave. In the past, underground seismic explorations were not able to image the opposite roadway using reflective in-seam waves. To solve this problem, we propose a new method of reflective in-seam wave imaging based on adaptive dispersion filtering. This method processes the reflective in-seam wave using a filter with the parameter of transmission distance. The degree of similarity of the filtered and the explosion signal is used to estimate the transmission distance and image the reflective objects. We test and verify this method using real underground seismic data. This research is helpful for the detection of coal mine goafs and abandoned roadways in work-faces or in front of tunneling ends.

"In order to ensure the stability of roadways, Anglo American Metallurgical Coal (AAMC) has developed a roof support design methodology that integrates analytical, numerical and empirical modelling. This methodology currently is based on a deterministic approach (a single factor of safety against failure is calculated). However, an improved methodology, based on stochastic modelling technique, has also been developed and currently being evaluated. The main advantage of this methodology is that the design is based on the probability distributions of input parameters; thus the outcome is based on a distribution of factors of safety rather than a single factor of safety. An evaluation of factors of safety may also be used to determine the likelihood of failure, which in turn may be utilized to quantitatively determine and evaluate the associated risks in decision making process. This methodology has been evaluated at Grasstree and Moranbah North Coal Mines in the designs of roof support in various critical areas and has been proven to be successful and a better way of determining the roof support requirements.This paper demonstrates the application of this methodology in a design of an install road roof support at Moranbah North Mine, where the 1,750 tonne capacity ''world's highest rated longwall"" has recently been installed.INTRODUCTIONAnglo American Metallurgical Coal Australia (AAMC) operates three longwall (LW) mines located in Central Queensland. There is an increasing emphasis on the reliability at these operations, as the longwalls are getting deeper and facing more geologically challenging conditions. In addition, the Anglo American Vision is to achieve ""Zero Harm"" through the effective management of safety at all businesses and operations. In order to accomplish this vision, AAMC has developed a proactive ground control management system for a safe and efficient production of underground reserves.Proactive ground control management involves understanding the impacts of the geotechnical environment on likely ground behavior, and it consists of approximately 15 major elements. One of the most essential fundamentals of proactive ground control management is to utilize a roof support design methodology that considers different failure mechanisms and also takes into account all important elements. The design methodology becomes even more important when the area in question is a critical area, which is defined as a high risk roadway where any failure may cause increased levels of safety and financial risks to underground workforce and operations."

Strata management is a critical and now necessary requirement in the New South Wales underground coal mining industry. As a formal and structured process, strata management allows ground support and mining methods to be tailored to the anticipated and encountered geotechnical environment in a controlled manner. In its application, strata management therefore enables operators to identify and control geotechnical hazards and the risks they pose to the mining operation, including risks to personnel safety and mine production. The paper considers recent developments in strata management in the New South Wales underground coal mining industry. Points covered include the statutory requirements stipulated in the Coal Mine Health and Safety Regulations, Geotechnical Hazard Plans, tiered support plans, the Authority to Mine concept, Trigger Action Response Plans and monitoring. Several successful and unsuccessful case studies are included which make specific reference to roadway development and longwall retreat and in doing so, the unique demands imposed by these two different aspects of the mining operation on strata management.

The compressive strength of coal in Yanlong mine area of China is less than 3 MPa. Basically, it is powdery. The roof and floor rocks are mudstone. Therefore this coal seam is a typical ?three soft? coal seam. Roof bolting cannot be used due to the very soft strata. When the conventional U-steel support was used, roadways deformation exceeded 30% of its original dimensions in some sections one half month after development. The required repair work was huge, seriously affecting the daily mine production. This paper describes how to support the soft coal roadways. The deformation characteristics of soft coal roadway were investigated. The conventional U-steel support is not subjected to uniform load, so the whole supporting structure must be strengthened. In addition, drilling holes in the coal seam can transfer high stress from near the ribs to the deeper parts of the surrounding strata, which is beneficial to the stability of the roadway. This new support method is to combine the strengthened U-steel support with pressure-relieving drill holes, providing an economic and efficient way to support the very soft coal roadways.

THE Roan Antelope Smelter commenced operations in October, 1931. As originally designed, its equipment consisted of one reverberatory furnace, 120 X 25 ft, two Peirce-Smith converters 12 X 20 ft, and one straight line casting machine. Since that time the following additions have been made: One reverberatory furnace 120 ft X 28 ft (1934) One reverberatory furnace 95 ft X 28 ft (1943) Two 12 X 20 ft Peirce-Smith converters (1934 and 1938) One 13 X 30 ft holding furnace 6 (1938) One straight line casting machine and 2 ladle tilting quadrants (1934) The metallurgy of the smelting process is comparatively simple. However, there are several features of operation which are uncommon to most copper smelters: (1) The high grade of concentrate treated; this has always been about 50 pct copper. (2) The high flux burden on the charge. This is necessary because of the deficiency of bases'in the concentrate and the high alumina content of the concentrate. (3) The frequent necessity of adding coal to the furnace charge to control the matte grade. (4) The high grade of matte produced. This has led' to unusual converter problems. From the commencement of operations, the ore mined has come from the Roan Basin orebody. The concentrate produced from this ore consists mainly of chalcocite and shale with small proportions of other copper minerals. As mining operations extend to the Roan Extension orebody, the proportions of bornite and chalcopyrite in the concentrate will increase with a corresponding decrease in the copper content of the concentrate. Because of the concentrate grade the capacity of the reverberatory . furnaces in terms of tons of copper produced per ton of coal burned is high.. This ratio is usually over 2.2, and on especially favourable runs has reached 2.6. Reference to Table , shows that the iron content of the concentrate is unusually low. Only part of this iron is available for slag formation, the balance going to the matte. To make up this deficiency in bases, limerock is added to the furnace charge. This flux ensures a slag that is of the correct silicate degree, is sufficiently fluid, of low specific gravity, and it counteracts the thickening effect of the alumina present. An ample supply of flux is obtainable from Ndola, 2 2 miles distant by rail. Although the reverberatory slag has a high copper content, the slag fall is low and the copper loss in the slag now rarely exceeds 1.0 pct of the total copper charged. The blister copper shipped is of such purity that only one fire refining operation has been necessary to produce a wirebar with properties comparable to electrolytic copper. Bismuth has always been the most troublesome impurity and consequently the problem of its control in the finished product has been of prime importance. The rocks which cover the east flank of the South Mountain are chloritic schists typical in character. A specimen of this rock from near the Bechtel shaft, Hamilton Ban Township, Adams County, Pa., was selected and analyzed in my laboratory by Mr. C. Hanford Henderson, with the following results: Ignition,........2.740 CaO,..........7.040 SiO,,..........41.280 MgO,.......... 7.486 AI,O,,.........18.480 K,O,..........2.208 Fe,Os,.........9.440 Na,O,.........3.523 FeO,......... 8.200 100. As one penetrates the range by moving westvard, these schists are replaced either by epidotie quartz or by orthofelsite. In the former case, a belt of copper-bearing rock is traversed, but not in the latter case. Inasmuch as this junction of the chloritic schists on the southeast and orthofelsite on the northwest, separated by the epidotic quartz, is several times repeated, we find two or three copper belts arranged in general parallelism to the axis of the chain, because the copper horizon is generally at this junction. Thus, in going west from Fairfield, after entering the low spurs on the South Mountain, one is fairly within the chlorite measures. At the " Virginia Mills " a chlorite schist comes in with a dip of S. 1.5 E.-74 Half a mile up Middle Creek, large numbers of fragments of chlorite schist, decoruposed epidotic matter, and quartz are encountered. The former rock, where in place, dips E. 40" S.-57o. About 4000 feet west of the intersection of this road with the so-called Tape-Worm Railroad, near the house of one Singly, large masses of chloritie schist are found loose on the road. A hundred yards farther west, near a triangle in the road, the latter is less in quantity and much epidotic quartz appears, after which a very large display of orthofelsite succeeds on the left bank of Middle Creek. All these last-mentioned rocks, however, are in fragments. I HAVE to announce with great regret that our distinguished honorary member, Louis Gruner, died in Paris in March last. The Institute, in his death, has lost one of the first as well as one of the greatest of its honorary members. I speak with great feeling, as he was both my instructor and my friend ; and I am sure that if he could hear what I am about to say of him, lie would object to it. Mr. Gruner's modesty was such as even to prevent, except in his own Corps, the thorough appreciation of his work in his own country. I think be mas better appreciated by those who are familiar with his labor in almost any other country than his own. A just man, a thorough scholar, a great investigator, he was so unselfish that almost the last act of his life, and the last letter he signed, only a few hours before his death, had for its ohject to render a service to one of his former pupils. I think no one who mas ever associated with him could forget, in the greatness of his learning, the sincere and earnest friend, mho was always ready to render a service, where such service could be rendered even at great inconvenience to limself. His own motto, "Sein, nieht schein;" that is, "Be, not appear to be," was singularly descriptive of his character; and, what is more than all, he was one of the most earnest Christian men with whom it has ever been mv. good fortune to be thrown in contact. There are few such men. He was one of the greatest metallurgists that Europe has ever produced; a man the more remarkable because, though known to most of us as a metallnrgist, some of the best work of his life was in the domain of geology to which he contributed very important researches and memoirs, which will remain permanently among the valuable additions to the geology of his own country. He was, at the same time that he was the greatest metallurgist in Europe, a brilliant chemist, a thorough geologist, a distinguished professor, and an expert, practical miner, whose advice and methods had only only to be known to be followed. Mr. Gruner was born in Smitzerland in 1809, and graduated from the Polytechnic School of Paris in 1530 and entered the School of Mines, from which he graduated with distinction in the Corps of Government Engineers of Mines at an early age, and was immedi-

Members of the Institute who were present at the Amenia, N. Y., meeting, in October, 1877, will remember their visit to the hematite mines, just west of the village of Amenia, and some of them may perhaps recall the deposit of carbonate ore south of the opening made for the hematite. The smelting of this carbonate during the last few months, has produced an iron that seems worthy of being brought to your notice. A little more than a year ago, at the Wassaie Furnace, Dutchess County, N. Y., we made a few hundred tons of iron from a mixture of two-thirds ram carbonate and one-third Chateaugay ore, hoping that it would be suitable for steel purposes, but as the iron showed phosphorus 0.189 per cent., it, was not offered. This iron looked well and seemed quite strong, and gave good results in malleable castings; but no special tests of strength were made. About February 1st, of this year, we began using two-thirds roasted carbonate, and one-third Chateaugay, and noticing that the iron mas stronger than usual, we had two samples tested, which showed tensile strength of 32,014 and 34,176 pounds per square inch. After our stock of Chateaugay ore was exhausted, me put on one-third ram carbonate with the two-thirds of roasted carbonate, and the first test made of the iron, showed 40,008 pounds per square inch. The three tests given above were made by Mr. A. J. Copp and Mr. E. B. Manning, of the Phoenix Furnace, Millerton, N. Y., on a machine of Riehle Bros., Philadelphia. Since these tests were made, they have broken samples made with all carbonate ore as follows: 39,669, 40,816, 41,882, 42,281, 39,902, and 40,130 pounds per square inch. A test taken from the same bed of iron as the last-mentioned (40,130), was broken by Mr. A. Blass, at Irondale Furnace, showing 40,151 pounds per square inch. A sample broken on the Riehle Bros. machine, at Stevens Institute, under direction of Professor R. H. Thurston, showed 40,000 pounds per square inch. Another sample was broken by Professor Thurston on his torsion machine, and gave torsion 7", and tensile strength of 44,500 pounds. And

The following abstract of an unpublished treatise, prepared by me, on the geological formations and minerals of the State of Alabama, is deemed of interest to the Institute. This State, called after the river of the same name (which, formed by the junction of the Coosa and the Tallapoosa, waters, with its tributaries, more than half the State), is divided by its main watershed into a larger southern district, sloping south and southwest, and drained into the Gulf of Mexico, and a smaller northern district, sloping generally north and west, and drained into the Tennessee. Geologically the State may be divided (according to historical geology) according to the different formations it exhibits, among which I include the Azoic, the existence of which in Alabama has been doubted by some; or it may be divided (according to structural geology, as closely related to topography) into a north and northwestern, a middle, and a southern zone.

" If you could only get that motion into a machine," said a gentleman, as he watched the process of making a " van " on a shovel, and saw the copper roll up to the highest point, "it would beat the world for slime-dressing." This idea has led to many an effort to get into a machine that peculiar motion, called the " vanning motion;" and so cams, eccentrics, eccentric gears, levers, bell-cranks, togglejoints, links, springs, etc., have been brought into requisition, while a contribution has been laid upon all the conceivable motions, rolling, tumbling, swinging, jerking, tossing, dropping, tripping, intermittent, regular and irregular, or a combination of some of them, to which have been added percussion, concussion, and more discussion —all in a vain attempt to combine in a single machine the consecutive motions of the shovel, in washing, flowing, and tossing the van. The Patent Office Reports, and the various mills of the country, show, as a result of this, a lot of gimeracks, most of which never went beyond a first trial, finding their way to the scrap-heap. Others still running might as well be there; while some have considerable merit for dressing other and richer sands than copper. It does look tempting to see that clean edge of copper climbing up the shovel-blade; but those who have seen in it such visions of large fortunes have not considered the time it takes to make a van, compared with the small quantity treated upon the shovel; and this points to the reason for the failure of all that class of machines called " vanning machines," when used for dressing copper slimes, namely, a lack of capacity. The writer has come to this conclusion through an experience with the Rittinger side percussion-table of the most improved make, sent from Germany to the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, and with the Ellenbecker tables, used by the same company, both of which are good types of that class of machines. In both of these machines, the tables are suspendetl by rods which allow them to swing, and they can also be adjusted for the purpose of varying the inclination of the table. In the Rittinger machine, the motion of the table is at a right angle to the flow of the slime, being produced by a wiper-cam which throws the table against a spring, which throws it quickly back against a stop, the percussion throwing up the mineral.
