Due to the availability of user-friendly microcomputer based packages, the use of simulation is increasing.. Users have however encountered problems inherent to the structure of sequential-modular simulators. These are the difficulties associated with estimating parameters for arbitrary' models and the solution of design and optimization problems. The implementation of an optimization routine in the simulator MicroSim has facilitated the solution of such problems. The literature indicates that more efficient numerical techniques for solving optimization problems than those presently used in MicroSim are available. These techniques, together with user-interfaces which allow such problems to be specified easily by users, will result in the development of simulators much more powerful than existing ones.

Optimisation of many oxide gold processing facilities, in most cases, either does not really take place or if it does take place it happens too late or takes too long. This is unf01tunate as extra profits and early cash flows are lost, in new projects, and/or may not be realised at all in others. The situation is easily avoid­ed by ensuring that the plant optimisation happens immediately following commissioning or for an established operation simply 'biting the bullet' and making it happen immediately as a 'better late than never' decision. This type of optimisation requires intense undiluted focus on each and every problem or restriction that contributes to reduced plant performance or bottlenecks, without letting go, until the predetermined outcome is produced. Thus a dedicated person with specific quantative goals is required for these tasks. Methodology and strategies for optimi­sation are discussed and numerous examples presented. The secret of successful heap leaching is discussed.

A diverse patent portfolio and an effective intellectual property strategy are vital in today’s small business world. Not only does a diverse patent portfolio enable a company to secure a monopoly within the market, it greatly increases the value of a company’s intangible assets and keeps competitors at bay. An overview of the patenting process as it pertains specifically to the materials science-related start-ups will be given, together with a summary of some general patenting strategies and a review of some patenting errors to be avoided, such as premature disclosure of the invention to the public. Additionally, a review of new “green technology” initiatives recently adopted by Patent Offices around the world is also provided. These initiatives are expected to greatly benefit patent applicants in the fields of metallurgy and mining, where research efforts are often directed to environmentally-friendly products and processes. INTRODUCTION Patents are playing an increasingly significant role in the business world. A diverse patent portfolio can enable a company to secure a monopoly within the market, which can provide a competitive advantage over competitors. At the same time, patent portfolio of any size can greatly contribute to the total value of a company’s intangible assets. As an example, Nortel entertained bids in 2011 for its portfolio of about 4000 patents, a large portion of which were directed to 3G- and 4G-mobile communication technologies. The portfolio was eventually sold for $4.5 billion to a consortium including Apple, EMC, Ericsson, Microsoft, Research in Motion, and Sony. Copper mining, and indeed the global mining industry as a whole, is facing challenges. Ore deposits are increasingly low grade, complex, and deeper in the ground, rendering copper mining operations more difficult and costly. Production costs are increasing. According to one study, the cost of producing copper has increased by an average of 10% per year since 2005 (Cantallopts, 2017). To illustrate, the cost of producing a pound of copper in 2005 was 90 cents, but had increased to 217 cents by 2014.

Predictions of delayed environmental impacts from mining—degradation that won’t begin for hundreds of years, but will then continue for thousands—present new permitting challenges. Examples include evaporative concentration in pit lakes, which can eventually cause metals concentrations to exceed human and wildlife toxicity standards, and delayed degradation of groundwater by slow moisture percolation through acid-generating tailings and waste rock. Given the time-value of money, the present worth of such delayed impacts is insignificant, yet they are unacceptable undercurrent laws and cultural values. Long-term financial set-asides offer a possible solution, first funding infrequent, long-term monitoring, followed by more expensive mitigation when the set-aside has matured.

In this review, availability of germanium in primary and secondary resources and its recovery from these resources are presented. With nearly 40% germanium consumed in fiber optics and scarcity of resources, the global consumption outplays the primary production. Germanium exists as a substituted element in zinc sulfide matrix of lead–zinc sulfides and lignites. Nearly 60% of the germanium supply is met by zinc refining residues, and about 20–30% of germanium is produced from coal and its by-products. Germanium recovery from various resources such as zinc plant residues, coal and coal plant waste, spent optical fibers, and copper flue dust has been examined. Bioleaching was exploited by few researchers to extract germanium from zinc sulfides, sulfide tailings, jarosite, coal fly ash, and flue dust. This review covers the various work carried out by different chemical separation processes, viz., chemical precipitation, solvent extraction (SX), ion exchange (IX), and membrane processes, as well as biological approaches.

Biooxidation, and especially the BIOX® process, is a viable, economical and environmentally attractive process to liberate gold hosted in refractory sulfides by oxidatively leaching the sulfides as soluble sulfates. The moderate to high cyanide consumption during the subsequent cyanidiation of the washed biooxidation residue is probably caused by the retention on the solids of labile sulfur species formed during the multi-electron oxidation process of sulfide to sulfate. In this work the nature and mode of transport of the cyanicides in the products from the mesophile BIOX® process, as well as that of the combined mesophile and thermophile bioxidation process, were considered and strategies to reduce cyanide consumption evaluated. It was found that labile sulfur species were the major cyanide consumers in the mesophile biooxidation product, forming predominantly thiocyanate during cyanidation. The transfer of labile sulfur species was only marginally decreased by more intensive and thorough washing of the biooxidation products with warm and hot water, intense stirring and warm caustic leaching. A major reduction in cyanide consumption was however achieved by using a combined mesophile and thermophile biooxidation process. Experience indicates that rockbolting is the most efficient and cost effective means of supporting gateroads of retreating longwalls. However, gateroads supported solely by rockboltiug currently accounts for less than 16% of the 4500km of annual gatemad drivage in China According to a stated target of the Ministry of Coal Industry, this percentage should be at least 50% by the year 2000. Since the learning stage of the technology which is indicated by low drivage rates and frequent roof falls in rockbolted gateroads must be overcome , strategies for the application of rockbolting to gateroads have become the focus of discussions on this topic. This pap presents the recent development on longwall gateroad rockbolting technology in China The development work has concentrated on understanding the mechanism of rockbolting; establishing new design procedures of bolting parameters fix gateroad support upgrading the consumable; optimizing bolt installation procedures; adopting better roofbolting machines; and developing adequate secondary reinforcement technique. The authors believe that this development work together with the on-going wok in other aspects of gaterosd rockbolting, as discussed in this paper 9 represent the rational strategies for the application of rockbolting technology to a wider range of longwall gateroads in Chinese d mines .

INTRODUCTION The Control Problem The need for automatic control in flotation plants stems from frequent and randomly occurring disturbances to the feed slurry. Typical disturbances occur in the solids feedrate, the slurry percent sol ids, and the mineralogy and flotability of the gangue and valuable minerals. In plants where semi -autogenous grinding mills (SAG) are used, feedrate changes are very large and changes in feed percent solids of 1m or more are common. Mineralogy changes between valuable minerals are common, as are changes in the host gangue rock. As these changes occur, the operator can attempt to compensate for them by making adjustments to the flotation cell levels, the dosage rates of the collectors and frothers, the pH, and in some cases the aeration rate of the cells. This problem is sometimes complicated by the fact that different sections of the flotation plant will be processing different ore types at the same time. Potential Savings with Control Flotation control brings about savings or plant improvements in two areas; the first is in improved metallurgy and the second is in reagent savings. Improved metallurgy includes increases in the average plant recovery and achieves target concentrate grade level s more consistently. Average recovery increases between 1.0 and 5.0 percentage points have been widely reported (Paakkinen, 1979; Sutherland, 1984). Reagent savings of up to 40 percent have also been reported (Hales, 1985). VARIABLES OF IMPORTANCE Control led, Manipulated, and Disturbance Variables The initial step in the analysis of the flotation control problem is identification of important variables which can affect the efficiency of separation. The efficiency of separation is represented by a group of controlled variables which can quantify the performance of a flotation circuit. This group includes variables such as grade, recovery, tonnage through- put, and circulating loads. The efficiency of separation of a flotation circuit may generally be defined by a grade recovery map, where each point on this map re- presents a set of operating conditions (see Figure 1). However, the combination of operating conditions must be set to operate close to the economic optimum. This paper has addressed the issues that constitute major obstacles to the cost- effective and efficient operation of metallurgical vessels from the refractory standpoint. Refractories generally withstand severe conditions of high temperature reactions as well as physical loading/impingement and hence degenerate and need replacement. Scarcity of some refractory materials especially high alumina and magnesite ores in some places, the prohibitive cost and the frequency of replacement of damaged refractories threaten the continued support for metallurgical operations. Some of the causes, prevention and cure for refractory wear have been discussed and rational strategies (short and long term) have been recommended which if implemented should go a long way towards arresting the perennial problems they portend.

Significant economic deposits (> 4,000 ha) of heavy mineral sands (ilmenite, rutile and zircon) were discovered in the Atlantic Coastal Plain of Virginia and North Carolina in 1989. The majority of these lands support highly productive row crop agriculture, and the development of restoration protocols that would return these lands to agricultural use was deemed to be critical to the long-term sustainability of mining operations. Virginia Tech worked closely with all stakeholders to develop appropriate restoration protocols and to coordinate their implementation. Full-scale mining operations at the Old Hickory Project in Virginia were initiated in 1997 by Iluka Resources Inc., and restoration protocols have continued to evolve in response to a variety of economic, technical, and social issues. Return of these lands to agricultural row-crop production has been complicated by lateral variability in soil physical conditions in the reclaimed pits and limited topsoil return. Approximately 150 ha of land are in various phases of reclamation, and approximately 25 ha have been released back to landowners to date. Currently, the reclaimed pits are returned to pasture vegetation, but return to more intensive agricultural production practices may be possible as soil reconstruction procedures are improved over time.

"The aggressive industrialization of America, the development of powered tools which generated massive amounts of respirable-sized dust particles, a latency period which may mask the relationship between exposure and development of disease, inadequate (or perhaps even careless) understanding of the relationship between dust exposure and disease, and respiratory protection which has later proven to be inadequate have resulted in a series of epidemics of silicosis which have caused the premature death of many workers.1-11 Emphasis on the regulatory control of dust levels in the workplace has greatly reduced the development of pneumoconiosis in the United States and in other developed as well as underdeveloped countries, yet the prevention of silicosis or coal workers' pneumoconiosis has not come close to being accomplished. Despite the public health perspective that pneumoconiosis arc totally preventable illnesses, there appears to be little evidence that this is the case.Cases of pneumoconiosis continue despite aggressive enforcement policies by regulatory agencies, attempts at dissemination of very readable materials aimed at workers and management 12.13 and respiratory dust exposure standards which are in place and appear, for the most part, protectivc.14- 16 It is more than frustrating for all parties associated with advocating workers' health to see reports of workers with aggressive silicosis. On another level, both the physician and the affected worker are helpless when a diagnosis of silicosis or coal workers' pneumoconiosis is made. Both realize that there is no proven way to affect the natural history of these progressive inflammatory and fibrotic processes. Neither is there any ""compassionate use"" therapy. What must be developed, at the very least, is a ""salvage therapy"" which has the potential to reverse, or at least dramatically lessen, the aggressive natural history of silicosis which develops over relatively short time periods. Because of the aggressive nature of silicosis (compared to coal workers' pneumoconiosis) attempting to develop a therapy for this illness should be a priority."

India?s interest in the resources of the deep seabed particularly the manganese nodules in the Indian Ocean can be traced back to the Indian Ocean Expedition of 1960 ? 65. The collection of Manganese Nodule samples from the Indian Ocean in January 1981 aroused considerable interest within the scientific community. Following several surveying expeditions, the Central Indian Ocean was identified as the most promising area for exploitation. India was accorded ?Pioneer Investor? status and further research and development programs were launched to establish the techno-economic viability of deep seabed mining. India has also shown considerable progress in the field of development and testing of methods for processing the nodules. The Department of Ocean Development manages the program.

Mining-metallurgical complex is the base of any economics and influences directly on practically all branches of world economics. Therefore the task of estimation and selection of investment decisions in mining industry adequate to modern market conditions and the task of decreasing multidimensional alternatives selection uncertainty are very actual. An uncertainty of investment alternatives is explained by a number of reasons, main of which are a presence of several investors types, an unstable situation on the market and an absence of evident relations between appraisal criteria used. Maximum increasing of formalization and objectivity of information technologies applied for an estimation permits to reduce the uncertainty of investment variants estimation. A number of principled innovations, allowing to solve the task of decreasing of multidimensional alternatives selection uncertainty, are introduced into the information technology of estimating and selecting investment decisions in mining-metallurgical branch, developed by us. In the article the necessity of including a cognitive model into developed selection mechanism, which allows to take into consideration inter-influences of used critera, has been grounded. Besides, the forecasting model considering interconnected time rows has been applied for increasing the world conjuncture forecast quality. Further in the article main metrics types have been characterized and application of weighted Chebyshev’s metrics as the most compromised from all studied metrics for variants selecting has been proved, and also the developed procedure of directional search of effective compromise decisions has been described. Brief characteristic of designed instrumental means of multi-criteria variants estimation and selection finalizes the article. In conclusion expedience and efficiency of using the developed information technology for reduction of multidimensional alternatives selection uncertainty have been grounded.

"AMAG investigated different aspects to improve the resistance against grain coarsening in aerospace alloys during recrystallization and was successful in finding several opportunities to minimize this effect. The studies show that one aspect to counteract grain coarsening is the chemical composition and subsequently all phases that are formed during homogenization. Starting with a fine grain (~ 50 µm) can lead to a final grain size of few mm. On the other hand with a coarse initial grain size (approximately 150 µm) and the right chemical composition the grain size can stay almost constant despite different deformation steps. Additional we investigated different sequences for the component production to eliminate the problem of grain coarsening as a coarse grain has a detrimental effect on product performance.INTRODUCTION In the aircraft industry, aluminium sheets are most commonly deformed in their soft state, followed by solution heat treatment and natural or artificial aging. If the preceding deformation is in a critical amount, during the recrystallization at solution heat treatment grain coarsening can occur. A subsequent deformation to this condition leads to an orange peel surface, which requires additional polishing. Next to this extra effort the coarse grain size produces a drop in the mechanical properties, often below specification limits. If there is no subsequent deformation, this effect is not visible and without destructive testing there is no possibility to detect the error. As mentioned before, this effect occurs during recrystallization, which is a process that is driven by the stored energy in the microstructure. The two most important aspects for an increase of the stored energy are the increase of the grain boundaries fraction (smaller grain size) and the increase of the dislocation density caused by deformation. The increase in dislocation density during the deformation arise from trapping of existing dislocations and from the generation of new dislocations. Most orebodies have one or more boundaries which are gradational, where the decision to stop mining is based on an economic cut-off. To maximise profit, this cut-off grade must be chosen correctly. It is necessary to review cut-off grades regularly, as the optimum cut-off grade changes with time, and major changes are hard to implement in a working mine without disruption to production schedules.Whenever a cut-off grade is used, there will be errors in its application caused by errors in the estimation of block grade. These can be minimised by stringent quality control in sampling and by the use of kriging, which attempts to minimise the absolute errors in grade estimation. The kriging method used should produce the most accurate estimates of marginal grade blocks - this will not necessarily be the technique that gives the best overall prediction of head grades.

Escalating energy and electricity costs have become one of the biggest expenditure drivers in mining operations. During the last eight years, energy costs have trebled when expressed as a percentage of total running cost in South African mines. Power consumption on mines is controlled by three main strategies, namely load clipping where energy use is reduced for parts of the day, load shifting where energy use is shifted to other parts of the day, and energy efficiency where energy use is reduced permanently.To reduce the operating costs of ventilating and cooling underground mines continuously, system optimisation studies must be completed. A part of this paper describes methods that can be used to reduce energy usage by optimising cooling and ventilation systems during planning and in existing operations using network simulation models that accurately reflect the current and planned ventilation conditions. These models are used to examine various options for improving the overall ventilation and cooling efficiency. Furthermore, an overview of refrigeration and cooling practices, and ventilation strategies is presented.Ventilation-on-demand and cooling-on-demand strategies have the potential to reduce both the capital and operating costs associated with mine ventilation and cooling systems. In addition, it has been proven that modern strategies and energy-efficient tactics are technically feasible.It is also important that the correct equipment selection is made. This must be based on the best technology with the highest energy efficiency. Where equipment replacement is being considered, energy efficiency must be one of the key decision drivers.In this paper a number of studies were presented and from the experience and the data presented it is clear that a large financial benefit is possible through optimising ventilation and cooling during the planning of mines or within an existing operating mine.CITATION:du Plessis, J J L, 2015. Researchers at the University of Alabama in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed adaptive process control systems in which genetic algorithms (GAS) are used to augment fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs). GAS are search algorithms that rapidly locate near-optimum solutions to a wide spectrum of problems by mimicking the search procedures of natural genetics. FLCs are rule based systems that efficiently manipulate a problem environment by modeling the "rule-of-thumb" strategy used in human decision making. GAS and FLCs can be combined to produce powerful, efficient, and robust adaptive control systems. To perform efficiently, such control systems require a control element to manipulate the problem environment, an analysis element to recognize changes in the problem environment, and a learning element to adjust to the changes in the problem environment. I" this paper, the details of an ongoing research effort to develop and implement an adaptive process control system for a column flotation unit are discussed.

India ranks fourth in the world of iron ore production and exported 55% of the total iron ore production of 180.9 million tons in 2006-07. As per United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC), the total iron ore reserves in India is 25249 mt. This consists of about 14630 mt of Hematite ore and 10619 mt of Magnetite ore. While the deposits of magnetite iron ore are limited to the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, hematite ore is available in abundance in Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Goa. National Steel Policy, declared by government of India in 2005 envisages 110 million tons of steel production by 2020. This is likely to be revised upwards. Massive exploration work in iron ore is needed to convert the available resources of iron ore into reserve category. Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) produced more than 24.5 million tons of iron ore during 2006-07 and plans to produce 42.0 million tons per year by the year 2010-11 to meet the requirement for a hot metal production of 26.2 million tons. While processing iron ore, the challenge faced would be the reduction of the gangue materials ? alumina and silica. It is proposed to bring down alumina and silica in the iron ore to less than 2% each from the current level of 2.5%~3.5% each. Appropriate beneficiation schemes are being developed depending upon the mineralogical characteristics of iron ores at different mines in the country. The state-of-art beneficiation technologies like Hydro-cyclone, jigging, magnetic separation etc. will be incorporated. SAIL?s corporate plan envisages blast furnace burden of 15% iron ore lumps, 15% pellets and 70% sinter by 2010. This strategy opens up the opportunity of utilization of micro fines generated in the mining and beneficiation processes for pellet making. This also directs towards all together new technological approach to the beneficiation process. SAIL is planning to set-up three pelletisation plants of 2~3 mtpa capacity. Environmental issues like reduction in slime loss and utilization of dumped low-grade iron ore are very important. R&D Centre for Iron and Steel, SAIL has carried out extensive laboratory investigations in the above area. This will help in reducing the loss of valuable iron through slimes and also increase the iron ore resource base. Laboratory investigations indicate that low grade dumped ore fines with Fe: 55.5% can be upgraded to a product with Fe: 66.2% with about 48% recovery.

Mines in Canada and the United States are subject to regulations limiting ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels in mine effluents released into the environment. The primary source of these nitrogen compounds is typically explosive used in blasting operations, as ammonium nitrate (AN) remains a significant component of most explosives used in the mining industry. The amount of AN entering a local water drainage system is related to site conditions, explosives used, explosive handling and blast efficiency. Mining operators acknowledge AN loss to mine water from blasting operations. However, the mechanisms by which ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are entering the water drainage system, or the relative contribution of specific mechanisms, may not necessarily be assessed or monitored adequately. Characterization of these mechanisms, through systematic investigations, allows a mining operation to focus its efforts on reducing AN loss. This paper outlines a strategy for investigating the mechanisms through which AN enters the mine water drainage system and methods to mitigate this loss. This strategy includes collection and analysis of data to identify and quantify the AN loss mechanisms, design and implementation of tests to mitigate this loss, and assessment of the results. Such investigations are not intended to be a separate one-time project, but part of a long-term process of continual feedback and optimization that is related to the collection and reporting of AN levels for regulatory purposes. The implementation of the strategy must be tailored to each mine?s requirements and existing conditions.
