Cominco Ltd's Polaris Mine in Canada's High Arctic has been successfully mining zinc ore in permafrost since 1981. Mining methods using frozen backfill have been the key to success. The mine is now producing about 60 per cent of the ore from pillars while maintaining high productivities. Annual ore production is just over one million tonnes providing more than 200 000 tonnes of zinc concentrate each year. Cominco Ltd has adapted management and operating practices to suit the harsh environment and the isolated site, and has shown that a profitable development can be carried out in the tough Arctic conditions, with minimum impact on the environment.

The Central Extended Orebody is located within the Cracow Goldfield approximately 360 km northwest of Brisbane and approximately 220 km west of Bundaberg. It is an epithermal gold deposit hosted by the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian Camboon Andesite. The lode was mined by open cut methods and produced 170 458 tonnes of ore at 5.62 g/t gold.The geology of the rit is relatively simple, comprising two rock types, trachyandesite and rhyolite which have been sub-divided into several units. The trachyandesite is sub-divided into three rock types: brecciated trachyandesite which is the most widespread, hydraulically fractured trachyandesite hosts the mineralisation and the third sub-unit is chloritised hydraulically fractured trachyandesite and has no associated mineralisation. The mineralisation is confined to quartz veins in hydraulically fractured trachyandesite. Several phases of brecciation and subsequent quartz and quartz/adularia vein injection are evident although not all phases are mineralised. Two rhyolite dykes intrude the trachyandesite one is monolithic, the other is sub-divided into hydraulically fractured rhyolite (barren), silicified rhyolite and auto-brecciated rhyolite.

Ground control problems are an important factor affecting safety, production, and efficiency in underground coal mines. A major portion of ground control problems encountered in underground coal mines can be attributed to geologic features in the strata surrounding the extracted coal seam. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has compiled information from numerous sources on the geological features that contribute to ground control problems in underground coal mines. The compilation includes (1) sedimentary features such as paleochannels, crevasse splays, clastic dikes, mold-and-cast structures, concretions, and lithologic factors, and (2) structural features such as folds, fractures, joints, cleat, and faults. The compiled information will aid in identifying the features, predicting their occurrence in advance of mining, and controlling or minimizing roof failure when these features are encountered in an underground coal mine.

In the present study, from experimental results, a new concept of possibility of flotation separation of quartz from feldspar is presented. The effect of the nonionic surfactant Brij 58 on the flotation behaviour of quartz and feldspar has been investigated. The effect of the surfactant adsorption at the solid-liquid interface was also studied. The results demonstrate that maximum flotability of quartz occurred at low concentration of surfactant. Feldspar is not collected by this surfactant. Flotation tests with feldspar that had previously been subjected to leaching by hydrochloric acid yielded similar flotation response as that of quartz. The effect of removal of alkali cations from feldspar surface on its flotability was investigated. The effects of inorganic and organic additives on the flotation recovery of quartz are discussed in terms of the slating-out or salting-in properties of these additives. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the fundamentals of the flocculation process. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of various physico-chemical parameters such as shear rate, polymer dosage, and polymer concentration on floc growth and to determine the applicability of a model in predicting polymer flocculation behavior. A rapid in-line particle size analyzer was used to follow the progress of both the floc growth and the breakage as a function of time. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used to determine the unknown parameters in the model and to fit a curve to the experimental data. Results show that the model, using GA as a tool to determine the unknown parameters, reproduces the experimental data with only reasonable accuracy and was relatively insensitive to the parameters. Results of the flocculation study showed that increases in polymer dosage had greater effect on the time required to reach the maximum floc size than on the floc size itself. It was also determined that, given all the aforementioned parameters, the degree of slurry mixing during the flocculation process had the greatest bearing on the floc growth.

Coal has traditionally been an integral part of life in Kentucky. Coal mining produces a large part of revenue for the Commonwealth of Kentucky and provides a significant number of jobs to the residents of eastern (less in western) Kentucky. Recently, however, the coal industry of Kentucky has had to endure many hardships. The Clean Air Act set forth sulfur dioxide emission standards which have severely affected much of the coal mining industry in Kentucky, because much of the coal mined in Kentucky has a high sulfur content. In this paper, the background around the effects of Clean Air Act on the coal industry is introduced. The economic and social effects of the Clean Air Act on the Kentucky coal mining are addressed.

If one considers that prehistoric man's first house may have been a limestone cave, calcium carbonate may be the most timeless of all building materials. Fanciful history aside, CaCO3 has been used for countless applications in human habitats. After all, tine marble block and tiles have always been the hallmark of eloquents and style. Mortars and cements derived from limestone have held together the very blocks of our civilization. In modem times, synthetic polymers are blended with ground limestone to produce everything from pipe, floor tile, cultured marble and house siding. All of these miracles of our technology contain CacO3 of various sizes and in varying amounts. This paper will discuss some of the critical attributes of CaCO3 which make it suitable for the new building products that have helped increase our standard of living. The vehicle of discussion will be a residential, single family house.

When Matthew Flinders entered in his log `This land forms the South side of the large bight; and besides projecting beyond the coast line, and being a little higher than usual is remarkable for having some reddish cliffs in it, and deep water near the shore', he was commenting on the deposit of bauxite at a place now known as Weipa. This sighting took place on 9 November 1802, and probably represents the first direct entry in Australia acknowledging a potential mineral deposit. Flinders, of course, had no idea as to what he was looking at, nor did he land to determine its content. If he had, he probably would have had no idea of the substance, and even less knowledge of its use. Nothing further was done to this for about 150 years.

On the basis of the data known on formation, characteristics and stability of solute heavy non-ferrous metals under different temperature and pressure conditions and different concentrations of substances dissolved it is found to be possible to obtain a condition of mineral formation resulting in selective production of free-floating minerals. This process of forced mineral formation has been taken as a basis of new methods of refractory copper raw materials concentration, complex processing of lead dust from copper smelting plants, lead flotation tailings final concentration and of those of polymetallic ores concentration. This list of effective utilisation of the process is not exhaustive (Bekturganov Abishev and Shkodin, 1987; Bekturganov and Sim, 1987; Bekturganov, 1988; Abishev and Bekturganov, 1989; Bekturganov, 1989a). To understand the character of the sulphurising thermodynamic and kinetic examination have been done. Analysis of conditions of the newly formed mineral associations formation and stability facilitates the elaboration of methods of improvement of results of the valuable components selective separation.

The development of reliable and accurate solution sampling systems plus on-line atomic absorption spectrophotometers and voltammetric analysers at Pasminco Metals - EZ's (PMEZ) zinc refinery at Hobart, Tasmania, has led to extensive implementation of On-Stream Analysis (OSA) throughout the hydrometallurgical circuit. These systems complement industrial autotitrator and colorimetric analysers and with the comprehensive use of a powerful integrated Distributed Control System (DCS), provide extensive monitoring and control of all the important in solution' parameters for the plant. Samples can be left unaltered, or filtered or settled, to remove solids. They are then precision diluted and pneumatically transported to analyser shelters, where they are analysed for zinc, acid, copper, cadmium, lead, antimony, cobalt, nickel, mercury and ferrous, ferric and/or total iron. The range of analyses depends on the sample itself. The results are used for feed forward and/or feedback control of reagents where possible, or simple trend monitoring and out-of-specification alarming when closed loop control is not practical. The overall system reliability and accuracy is such that many daily composite plant samples are no longer analysed off-line. Operator sampling has also been reduced, and in two places, autotitrators with automatic sample pre-treatment have been installed for preparing and analysing samples collected by operators.

Cobalt behavior in pyrometallurgical processes is traditionally analyzed using slaglmatte distribution coefficients as functions of matte grades or matte iron contents. L(s/m) = (%Co) I [%Co] = f [%CuNi] or f [%Fe] The method is inconvenient to use in predictive mass balance work because of the interdependence of assays and mass quantities. An alternative procedure is proposed based on cobaltliron ratios for slags and mattes: Js = (%Co) / (%Fe), Jm = [%Co] / [%Fe], and J, = b + m [Jm]

The relationships between backfill-transportation parameters (solids concentration, velocity, and pipe diameter) and the wear rate of backfill-transportation pipelines is well understood. However, the degree of wear experienced by a pipeline depends not only on the transportation parameters, but also on the characteristics of the solids making up the backfill, i.e. the particle-size distribution, hardness, shape, and sharpness of the particles. Therefore, unless data corresponding to the specific wear rate of the solids are available, the determination of the wear rate for pipes transporting an uncharacterized backfill is largely guesswork. This paper describes an evaluation of particle characteristics with special reference to particle sharpness so that pipe wear rates can be correlated with solids of different size distributions and sharpnesses.

Open pit mines in the Yilgam Craton have unique hydrogeological characteristics resulting from a combination of geology, mineralisation and the complex and extended development of the regolith. The principal features of this geological relationship are:ò deep and complex multi-stage development of the weathering profile; ò steeply dipping rock layering;ò supergene enrichment; andò mining across the regolith/rock interface.These features result in large changes in permeability horizontally across rock layers; vertically through the weathering profile and along-strike in association with mineralisation and the mineralised Structure.

Pictured on these pages are the seven RMCMI Scholarship Award Winners for the 1992-93 year followed by a brief profile. All winners were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Beaver Creek, Colorado to receive recognition at the Institute Awards Luncheon Monday, June 28. 1993. Each state vice president served as the host for the collegiate winner. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Alan Czarnowsky, each winner receives $750 tuition credit for the coming academic year. As this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will receive another $750 for tuition credit in their senior year if they have maintained good academic standing and are recommended by their university. A resident from each of the eight RMCMI member states is selected from among Board approved institutions. Criteria for these awards to be made in the spring annually is (1) That the award be made to a sophomore student and used as tuition during the junior year. (2) That the recipient be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the member state. (3) That the recipient have good academic standing, be pursing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than those in the mining departments, but in engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Contributions to this worthy project are tax deductible to each individual RMCMI member or his firm. Through annual donations of $100 or more, the Patrons of the Institute fund the scholarship pro- gram and the various vice presidents contribute the travel expenses to convention for these outstanding young collegiates. During foundry sand reclamation process development, molds formed from reclaimed chromite sand showed a rapid decline in tensile strength during thermal cycling tests. Because this characteristic could limit reuse of chromite sand in the foundry, the sand was examined in detail. Scanning electron microscopy, x-ray mapping, magnetic susceptibility, and x-ray diffraction were utilized to evaluate processed chromite sand. It was found that process variables such as binder composition, reclamation temperature, and processing method had a significant effect on the chromite sand particle surface. X-ray diffraction indicated a crystallographic change in the processed sands. Magnetic susceptibility also increased after processing. Diffusion of iron to the particle surface and increased surface roughness were identified as potential causes of the decreased tensile strength in the molds.

After the Loma Prieta Earthquake, which caused major damage to viaducts in the Bay Area, the California Department of Transportation set up a test programme for foundation piles. Funderingstechnieken Verstraeten B.V., beter known as Fundex, was approached, since one of the piling systems of Fundex, named Tubex, is extremely suitable in areas sensitive to earthquakes and we were very much interested to prove the capabilities of this piling system. Equipment For the installation of Tubex and Tubex grout-injection piles special piling equipment is required. Since our company is not only a contractor, but also a designer and manufacturer of piling equipment, all special equipment for our range of foundation techniques is designed and built by our own piling equipment department. For the installation of both Tubex piles and Tubex grout-injection piles for the Caltrans test programme, the following pieces of equipment were selected: a) Fundex F12 piling rig b) Drill table c) Hydraulic powerpack d) Grout mixing unit and high pressure pump

An extensive laboratory campaign was conducted to find a suitable water soluble collector to replace diphenylguanidine (DPG) in the matte separation process. The examination of the collectors was done by measuring the rate of flotation and the best candidate collectors were selected on the basis of the rate parameters. As a result of this search mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) was selected for a plant trial. A plant trial of two weeks duration confirmed that MBT will produce separations at least as good as those obtained with DPG.

"There has been a major evolution of mineral processing technology in the past decade. The evolution has been driven by recognition of broad environmental changes which have impacted various areas of the world. Numerous government regulations have required many mining and mineral processing organizations to introduce changes to reduce the undesirable effects on the environment; many mining companies have voluntarily introduced new technologies and practices which surpass the limits imposed by the regulations. Surprisingly, some of the 'new' technologies are modifications of concepts developed decades earlier. Gravity separation technology is in this category.Mineral Deposits Limited, an Australian company, has been a world leader in the development of mining concepts, reclamation practices and equipment technology that is environmentally suited to today's requirements. This paper relates to equipment used for gravity concentration and electrostatic separation systems, including Reichert cones, spirals, and electrostatic separators. The basic devices and technologies were developed more than forty-five years ago, but use of the systems was quite limited until environmental and conservation practices were recognized and introduced. Spiral concentrators, for example, were patented in the mid-l940s by I.B. Humphreys in Denver , Colorado. The two types of spirals marketed (the Model 24A for minerals and the Model 24C for coal) remained essentially unchanged until expiration of the patents. During this early period most spirals were used in iron-ore wash plants on the Mesabi Range to recover fine iron which previously had been discarded. About the same time sand mining plants in Florida incorporated spirals to recover titanium minerals and zircon from lowgrade beach sands. The Labrador Trough opened new opportunities for spirals when hard-rock iron-ore deposits were developed; approximately 10 000 Model 24A Humphreys spirals were installed between 1958 and 1966. About 5000 spirals of this model are still operating in the same capacity, in spite of the fact that extensive improvements have since been made in gravity separation technology."
