INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is the most widely used and economic means of concentrating metal sulfide ores such as those containing copper, lead, zinc, nickel, molybdenum, and pyrite. Also recoverable are other metal species that are often associated with sulfide ores such as cobalt, platinum, gold, silver, etc. Froth flotation is a physico-chemical process for separating finely ground minerals from their associated gangue material. The process involves chemical treatment of a finely divided (ground) ore in a water pulp to create conditions favorable for the attachment of certain of the mineral particles to air bubbles. The air bubbles then carry the selected minerals, called valuable, to the surface of the pulp to form a stabilized froth which is removed and recovered. The unattached gangue material remains submerged in the pulp and is either discarded or reprocessed. To obtain the adherence of the desired mineral particles to the air bubbles, at least two specific steps must occur: a hydrophobic (water hating) surface film must be formed on the particles to be floated along with a hydrophillic (water wetting) film on all other particles; and a controlled bubble surface tension interface must be maintained, allowing for high particlelbubble collision frequency and efficient attachment or sticking of the particle to the bubble once collision has taken place. In most flotation applications, the above two steps are controlled by chemical flotation reagents. The collector is a chemical reagent which produces the hydrophobic film on the valuable mineral particle and is the primary driving force that initiates the flotation process. The frother is a chemical reagent which influences the collision frequency and attachment efficiency of hydrophobic particles and air bubbles. Thousands of research papers and books have been published on the chemical theory behind sulfide mineral collectors, e.g., Fuerstenau (1962), Fuerstenau (1976), Fuerstenau, et. al. (1985), King (1982), Leja (1982) and Moudgil and Somasundaran (1987), This article will only address and summarize some of the more practical aspects of collector usage. The industrial scale practice of froth flotation in sulfide mineral concentration has changed little since the 1950's. For example, of the approximately 80,000 metric tons of sulfide mineral collectors used commercially (1980) in the free world, almost 98% were known and manufactured in some form 25 years ago. A very interesting and informative history of collector development has been given by Crozier (1984). In addition, the industrial scale practice of froth flotation applied to sulfide ores has proceeded since the 1920's with often little direct (predictive) scientific explanation due to the extreme complexity of the flotation process. Empirical testing has been a mainstay of industrial flotation reagent development and use. Even today there is often strong disagreement between researchers as to the mechanisms of chemical flotation practices that have been performed successfully at an industrial scale for many years. As a result of the above environment which makes reagent cost/performance analysis difficult for new reagents, there is a strong tendency for the flotation operation to use, and reagent companies to supply, as cheap as possible raw materials and manufactured products that are quite general in application. In the last 20 years or so, there has been increasing technical effort to tailor make reagents for specific applications, but to date such work has had little commercial impact. It is clearly the hope of this author and others that this situation will change in future years as technology improves and pressure for improved flotation performance intensifies. This article is a condensation of collector usage trends quantified as part of a comprehensive industrially oriented applications program on froth flotation organized by Klimpel and coworkers (1979-1987) and as reported in various countries that participated in the program from 1978-1983. Since the mid 1970's, the science of remote sensing has invented and demonstrated sensors that hold unique promise for users that operate in the marine environment. Earlier, visible and infrared sensors provided images and temperature maps of surface conditions, but the 1970's introduced active (radars) and passive (radiometers) microwave sensors capable of penetrating clouds and operating day or night over the world's oceans. Space-based observation satellites permit these systems to span the globe many times each day, providing a view of the world's oceans and Arctic areas consistent with daily and, sometimes, hourly changes in the marine environment. Experimental satellites launched by NASA proved that such systems had great scientific merit, but, even more importantly, they could produce information valuable to marine transportation, fishing, and resource exploration and extraction. This latter subject includes the off-shore search and production of petroleum and natural gas resources and ocean mining as well. The El Soldado copper deposit occurs in volcanic rocks of alkaline affinity of Lower Cretaceous age. The orebodies are discordant and show strong structural and lithological control. The mineralizing event was accompanied by hydro- thermal alteration expressed as carbonatization, silicification, and chloritization. Individual orebodies contain bornite-chalcopyrite cores which are surrounded by haloes dominated by chalcopyrite and pyrite respectively. The sulfur isotope composition of copper sulfides strongly suggests the sulfur is of magmatic origin. Fluid inclusion studies show the mineralizing fluid to be a highly saline NaC1-CaC12, brine. No evidence of boiling was found. The deposit is most likely of epigenetic origin. Hydrothermal fluids were produced during crystallization of a sodium rich trachytic magma during the waning stages of an episode of alkaline magmatic activity. Similar copper deposits along the Chilean Coastal Range may also be associated with alkaline host rocks.

Peko Mines, a Division of Peko-Wallsend Operations Limited (PWOL) has operated several small underground mines in the Tennant Creek district of the Northern Territory supplying ore to a central treatment plant. The Argo Mine is the most recently developed by Peko Mines. A magnetic anomaly was identified from low level airborne magnetics in 1960 and drilling, which commenced on the site in 1969, was halted in 1974 and resumed in 1980 following the rise in the price of gold. By mid 1983 a resource of + 200 000 tonnes of 12 g/tonne Au had been outlined and a decision to develop the resource was taken following the drilling of three further diamond drill holes which did not significantly alter the value of the resource. The small size of the orebody could not support the full capital cost of two shafts and a single entry mine plan was developed to extract the ore at a rate of 15 000 tonnes per month and to provide all the safety features, ventilation systems and services of a two shaft mine. In December 1983 a contract was let to Allied Constructions Pty. Limited (Allied) to sink and equip a 4.8m shaft to a depth of 410m and to convert the headframe and winder, which are leased for the life of the mine by PWOL from Allied, from a sinking to a production configuration. Shaft equipment designed by Hardcastle & Richards Pty. Ltd. (H & R) in conjunction with PWOL includes a skip/cage, counter- weight, and an auxiliary cage on rope guides, a sealed ladderway and exhaust air ducts.

Kimberlite contains a unique assemblage of minerals and exhibits a characteristic pattern of spectral reflectance in the visible and near-infrared wavelength region. This spectral pattern is readily discerned in well exposed kimberlite outcrops, but becomes increasingly difficult to identify when outcrops are partially covered by vegetation or soils derived from nonkimberlitic materials. Detection of poorly exposed kimberlite diatremes is possible using multispectral imaging techniques where spectral bands are chosen to optimize contrast between the kimberlitic soils, nonkimberlitic soils, and vegetation. Careful processing of the multispectral data is essential to separate the spectral signature of kimberlite from the signatures of other components of the scene.

This paper describes the metallurgical aspects and properties of a duplex austenitic-ferritic steel SAF 2205. As well as having high yield strength and hardness, SAF 2205 combines the high resistance of ferritic stainless steels to chloride-induced stress-corrosion cracking and the excellent resistance of austenitic stainless steels to hydrogen-induced stress-corrosion cracking. Its alloying elements contribute to its mechanical and corrosion properties as follows: nitrogen increases its pitting potential and improves its strength, nickel increases its resistance to pitting and its toughness, chromium and molybdenum give improved resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. SAF 2205 has better resistance than steel types 316 Land 317 L both to pitting corrosion and to stress-corrosion. This makes it a very good material for pipes, tanks, and pumps in harsh environments such as those in petrochemical and desalination plants.

There have been significant changes in the Australian mineral sands industry in recent years due to changing supply and demand conditions, new product opportunities and opportunities for rationalisation of operations. Earnings within the industry have typically been volatile and this has been reflected in the share prices of listed mineral sands companies. Apart from the effects of variations in the state of the economy on the industry, share prices have also reflected the extent to which a company's earnings volatility is due to capital structure, the relative proportion of fixed costs to total costs and the nature of th'- sales mechanism. At the time of writing, the high prevailing share prices for industry participants and the current outlook for the industry would suggest that the time is opportune for raising equity capital. The immediate outlook for the industry and its various product segments appears favourable but beyond this the usual uncertainties remain. The new tax environment will cause most companies in the industry to have to rethink their dividend and capital structure policies. Most shareholders will now be concerned to maximize dividend receipts and minimise exposure to capital gains tax. Companies in the industry that have relied fairly strongly on earnings retention to help finance growth in the past will- need to look to increased equity raisings in the Future.

A computer program has been written to simulate ground vibrations induced by multiple- hole surface blasts. The program is an inexpensive and relatively easy to use tool for predicting the principal blast vibration characteristics that determine damage and annoyance potential: peak particle velocity, frequency content and pulse duration. The program generates a complete ground motion history by superposing, at any surface position, the vibrations induced by each individual explosive charge. It requires specification of (hence allows accounting for) the blast geometry, initiation sequence (including random delays), position with respect to blast, pulse characteristics induced by each charge, and propagation laws. A methodology is outlined to determine the necessary variables either on the basis of site investigations (e.g.,velocity, attenuation, single-hole input pulse), or by back-calculation from measured blast vibration records. The latter procedure has been applied to blasts from two coal strip mines. Main difficulties encountered are backcalculating individual input pulses, propagation (especially dispersion) parameters and delays. A normal distribution of delays, based on published results, has been shorn to influence the results and the response of a single degree of freedom structure significantly. Broadening of the wave types included, improved input pulse determination and propagation laws, and more detailed verifications with field results are required in order to make the program more directly applicable to practical situations.

The effect of dissolved ions present in plant water on the flotation of phosphate ore from central Florida was investigated. Of the three most abundant ions, namely Ca++, Mg++ and SO4--, calcium ions were the most detrimental in the flotation of phosphate with sodium oleate collector. In one feed, a 10 ppm concentration of Ca++ ions reduced the BPL recovery from 86% to 46% whereas in the other a 40 ppm concentration lowered the recovery from 90% to 52%. The effect of Na2C03, NaHC03, Zeolite and EDTA to remove ca++ ions from water and hence improve apatite flotation was also studied.

Consumption and intensity of use trends for twelve metals, by industrial end use, were estimated for 1972 through 198Z. The trends were then forecast through 1993 using standard statistical methods. The intensity of use measure selected is the quantity of metal consumed per constant dollar output of a specific industrial sector. The metals studied were aluminum, chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, manganese, nickel, the platinum-group metals, tin, titanium, tungsten, and zinc. Average annual growth rates for the following four of the twelve metal increased from 1972-82 as follows: aluminum, 1.00 percent; platinum-group metals (consisting of platinum, palladium, and iridium), 8.83 percent; titanium, 7.82 percent; and tungsten, 6.09 percent. Consumption. for the remaining eight metals decreased at average annual rates ranging from 0.58 percent (copper) to 5.37 percent (manganese).

In 1984, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted mineral surveys of the 20,508-acre Blue Lakes (NV-020-600) and 5,142-acre Alder Creek (NV-020-600D) Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs) in northwestern Humboldt County, Nevada. The WSAs are part of an upthrown, north-south trending fault block associated with the Basin and Range province. Both areas are predominantly underlain by the Cretaceous Duffer Peak pluton which intrudes Triassic metasediments and Jurassic plutonic rocks to the east and Permian Happy Creek volcanics to the south. In the Alder Creek WSA and in the southwest portion of the Blue Lakes WSA, Duffer Peak granodiorite and Happy Creek volcanics are overlain by Tertiary basalt. No active mines exist within the Blue Lakes WSA; but, several prospects, claims, and mineralized outcrops are in the south and northeast portions. No mineral resources were identified but samples from discontinuous, vein-type deposits contained anomalous amounts of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, antimony, and uranium. Very fine, residual gold was detected in nine alluvial samples collected from a small deposit in the southwest corner of the WSA; average gold value was $3.58 per cubic yard (at $350/ounce). Two mines, several prospects, and mineralized outcrops adjacent to the Blue Lakes WSA contain mineralized, irregular structures which do not appear to extend into the Blue Lakes study area.

Mineralogical analysis of a nickeliferous laterite from the Rockhampton region shows that the nickel is largely associated with the manganese wad and opaline silica. The laterite also contains an appreciable chromite content (about 12 per cent Cr2O,) although this tends to be poorly liberated.Leaching with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, at atmospheric pressure at the boiling point is non-selective with respect to iron dissolution.The degree of dissolution increases as the acid concentration and retention time are increased; cobalt dissolution requires less aggressive conditions than does the dissolution of an equivalent amount of nickel.Leaching with sulphuric acid at elevated temperatures and pressures leads to a minimum amount of iron dissolution, is rapid, and requires a reduced acid addition rate. Nickel and cobalt recovery from the clarified leachate would be simplified because of the leach selectivity.Pressure leaching appears to be the most practical route for treating the Rockhampton laterite. The economics of processing would be made more attractive by the recovery of a chromium concentrate from the leach residue. This would typically contain about 45 per cent Cr2O, and could be used as a source of chromium chemicals.

This paper presents an investigation of some alternatives, and improvements to timber posts and cribs. The purpose is to find a cheaper, better, easy to install, and effective means to replace or improve them. Selection of supports needs to take account of several factors. These factors include the mechanical behavior of the support, technical feasibility, and cost. In this paper a variety of supports are compared on these bases. Particular advantages and disadvantages of those supports have been determined through published material and a testing program. A broad evaluation of a number of specific groups of supports is presented. Included in this evaluation are timber posts and cribs, steel friction props and several, newer developments such as the Micon Yield Capsule and the Super Post. Another support that will be briefly discussed is steel-fiber-reinforced concrete. Particular emphasis will be placed on the Micon Yield Capsule and the Super Posts on which preliminary testing has been carried out. The testing results are presented in detail. The shortcomings of the test procedure are pointed out and some new ideas to improve the testing in the future are proposed.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the rate of uranium and molybdenum extraction from a flow reactor. Specific variables tested are fluid throughput and flow rate, lixiviant cation, and injected pH and carbonate concentration. The ore tested was from the Felder mine in southern Texas. It contained substantial quantities of marcasite and molybdenum disulfide that competed with the uranium ore for oxidant. Flow studies showed the oxidation of molybdenum disulfide under field conditions is mass transfer controlled, whereas the uranium oxidation is limited by surface reaction rate. The rate of uranium oxidation decreased with decreasing pH. The total carbonate levels, on the other hand, were unimportant. Ammonium carbonate appears to greatly decrease, if not completely halt, the reaction of marcasite with the oxygen. This effect was not found using either sodium or potassium carbonate.

To reduce front-end loader (FEL) collision accidents by detecting obstacles in the rear blind area. The Problem Federal regulations require an audible backup alarm to activate when an FEL is backing. Since the device is constantly being activated, the warning soon becomes a normal part of the mine environment and is less effective as a warning device. Also, when several machines are working together, it is difficult to detect by ear alone just which machine is backing. Approach The Bureau defined the location for hazard detection to include an area extending 15 to 20 ft behind the rear bumper of an FEL. Then, existing surveillance and detection technology was assembled, ruggedness, and applied to the FEL's rear blind area to form a new discriminating backup alarm system employing either infrared light, ultrasonics or radar

INTRODUCTION In the past decade, the international coal trade has been undergoing a period of gradual change. This change will continue through the remainder of this century until by the year 2000 the international coal industry will look very different from the industry which existed in the early 1970's. The industry which will emerge from the thirty year period of change (1970-2000) will be different in many ways. -The volumes of coal transported will be much larger. - The primary type of coal traded will be steam coal rather than metallurgical coal. - A much broader group of countries will be participating in the trade both as suppliers and as consumers. - The trade will be dominated by a relatively small number of large producing and trading companies. - The coal mined for international shipment will be primarily surface- mined. – The United States will play a decreasingly important role in international coal trade. In the course of this paper I propose to address three questions which are crucial to the formulation of an understanding of the changes outlined above : (1) Which supplier nations will be most successful in the international metallurgical and steam coal trade in the next decade and a half? (2) What emerging trends will shape the international coal trade in the 1980's and 19901s? (3) Where are U.S. producers likely to fit in this scheme of things? As a background to my remarks, I should note that what follows is based on five years of work in a consulting capacity on coal supply and demand issues worldwide. Although in the course of this work I have had occasion to develop mining and transportation cost figures for all of the countries discussed below--both my own and those obtained from coal producers--it is apparent that success in the marketplace can be determined in some instances by considerations other than costs. Nevertheless, my comments today about international competitiveness will be dominated by cost considerations; there are, after all, not many markets that reward the high-cost producer with success. Let us begin by establishing some criteria for success in the international coal market and then compare some of the producer nations to some of these criteria. The criteria are: - Low delivered cost, - Good quality coal, - The producer's partnership in a joint mining venture with an importer or a consumer of coal, - The producer's international business orientation and commitment to penetrating the market, - The producer's reliability as a supplier, and - Political pressure exerted by the producing country on consumers.

For all mineral resource-based companies, it is important to reach the right balance of investment between acquisition and exploration to allow the best chance of achieving long-term corporate goals. The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) provides an excellent example of success from generative exploration and supports the belief that exploration can be justified, not only in terms of investment criteria, but also because it is essential to a company wishing to build a dynamic profitable growth path based on world-class deposits as cheaply as possible. BHP was incorporated in 1885 to mine a lead/zinc/silver discovery at Broken Hill. The Company has since gone through a steel development phase (1911-1965) and is now in a major phase of growth partly based on exploration success. This third phase was marked by decisions taken in the 1950's to search actively for mineral and energy resources above and beyond the requirements of the steel industry. The commercial successes of this period have been Bass Strait oil and gas, Groote Eylandt manganese, Deepdale iron ore, Gregory coal and Carnilya East nickel. In total at least 22 new resource discoveries have been made in the last 25 years, of which 11 have been developed and several are undergoing feasibility studies. A financial analysis shows that the real value of the returns seeded by discovery covers the real exploration cost many times over. Moreover, the major discoveries have had a spectacular impact on the growth and development of the Company. BHP's present exploration effort is directed towards geological targets which most frequently meet attractive financial criteria and also promote diversification from steel-related earnings.

This paper reviews the state-of -the-art techniques for estimating the duration of post- mining subsidence arising from different mining techniques and evaluates existing post-mining liability systems in the United States and abroad. For each mining technique (room-and-pillar and longwall) the mechanism of subsidence development is examined and the critical factors influencing the duration of subsidence are evaluated. These are followed by a comprehensive summary of field data on the duration of subsidence movements collected in various parts of the world. Using this information, graphical charts are developed to depict the relationship between the time duration and critical controlling factors. Also included are any mathematical relationships that may exist between the different variables. Finally, a survey of current state, federal and foreign legislation on mine operator liability time spans is provided. These laws are evaluated for their applicability in light of the data on duration of residual subsidence. On the basis of this evaluation, guidelines are suggested for the establishment of the mine operator liability structure for the United States.

Permitted explosives in South Africa are those explosives approved by the relevant State authority for use in fiery coal mines. The main tests that an explosive must pass for this approval are the gallery tests derived from the Buxton (U.K.) classification. These tests are described briefly. In addition, the safety of permitted explosives is affected by their ability to deflagrate, and to produce a naked flame after blasting, rather than to detonate fully. Tests done on this phenomenon are discussed. A further potential hazard of explosives is after-blast fume. The testing and behaviour of several permitted explosives in this respect are covered, both in the laboratory and in the field. Performance testing of permitted explosives, specifically the double-pipe, underwater, and ballistic mortar tests, and their relationship to field use, are considered in some detail. The application of traditional and new tests to permitted explosives leads to guidelines for the safe and efficient formulation and use of these products.
