Precipitates consisting of amorphous ferrihydrite and crystalline goethite have been prepared by aging hydrolyzed Fe (III) solutions at room temperature. The precipitates have been characterized by x-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis. The amorphous ferrihydrite transforms to goethite with time. The ferrihydrite to goethite transformation is affected by the presence of small amounts of copper or nickel coprecipitated with the iron. .The addition of copper decreases the amount of goethite at a given aging time and increases the amount of coprecipitate which is initially dissolved in sulfuric acid, but it does not seem to affect the dissolution of the crystalline part'. It is proposed that adsorption of copper hydroxo species on goethite nuclei delays the ferrihydrite to goethite transformation. The effect of nickel is less dramatic than that of copper. Apparently a portion of the added nickel is adsorbed on the goethite crystallite surface rather than incorporated into the goethite lattice.

INTRODUCTION Uranium mine inspection in Canada forms one element of the enforcement of the Atomic Energy Control Act; it is under this Act that all Canadian uranium mines and mills are licensed to operate. Inspection duties are carried out by a small core staff of federal government inspectors (working for the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB)) largely supplemented by provincial mine inspectors working on behalf of the AECB. Unlike most resource extraction in Canada, uranium mining is under federal jurisdiction and consequently it was the AECB who decided in 1975 that changes in the Canadian uranium mining industry, particularly its expansion and the expanding role of the mine inspector in the limiting of exposures, warranted the offering of a special radiation protection training course. The Uranium Mine Inspector Training Course (UMITC) was first conducted in 1976 at the Elliot Lake Centre in Elliot Lake, Ontario. Subscription for the course was not limited to mine inspectors to enable union stewards, management personnel and provincial/federal labour inspectors to attend. This paper will present an outline of the course content, the format of its presentation and non-curriculum aspects of running a course of this type in uranium-producing community. The core lecturers for UMITC are drawn from the Radiation Protection and Uranium Mine Divisions of the AECB. In addition, guest lecturers are invited from universities and medical research centres together with industry professionals and government researchers. In all some twenty-four plus presentations are made over the first five days of lectures. The program topic areas, hazards, controls, measurements, record-keeping and health effects are preceded by an intensive half-day session on radiation fundamentals. TOPICS Hazards [Dust] A review of the dynamics of airborne particles including the effects of particle size, gravity and wake-turbulence on the behaviour of dust clouds. Associated topics are migrational aspects of dust particles and specific dust-generating mine operations. [Radiation] Canadian uranium mines are increasingly diverse in nature ranging from large scale low-grade underground operations in Elliot Lake to smaller high-grade open pits in Saskatchewan. Papers are presented on assessments of internal and external exposure, the metabolic pathways of ingested or inhaled radiation and the specifics of mine and mill hazards. Radiation hazards are further broken down into gamma surveys of uranium mines, radon daughter concentrations and problem areas. Controls The relationship between mining methods and the operating environment is critically important to ensuring safe working conditions. This refers to both the selection of machinery/devices, etc., and to engineering controls which are instituted to remedy problems created by new technology. UMITC examines a number of possible mining techniques, their criteria for selection and impact on the working environment. Control measures, ventilation practices and design, the need for continuous water misting and special open-pit precautions are presented. These lectures frequently conclude with suggestions for better operating guidelines for mine ventilation systems and the need for greater co-operation between the ventilation department and the underground crews. Measurements Uranium mining regulations stress the need for a high standard of exposure monitoring, statistical planning and record-keeping. [Statistics] Although many course participants are well versed in statistics, certain fundamentals are repeated and include, the concepts of mean, variance, standard deviation and standard deviation of the mean. Confidence levels, decision-making based on sample statistics and statistical records are also discussed. [Dust Measurement] Dust measurement is particularly critical in the mines where the high silica content of the ore body, such as those at Elliot Lake, results in the continuous generation of dust. Sampling practices, filtration, impaction, thermal impaction and electrostatic precipitation are explained together with the methods of counting samples to determine free silica. Konimetric and gravimetric techniques for dust sampling are compared and contrasted. [Radiation Measurements] Both collective and personal dosimetry systems are used in the Canadian uranium mining industry and lectures are presented on each. Techniques and possible sources of error are discussed for a variety of radon and radon daughter measurement methods - Lucas method, Tsivoglou and modified Tsivoglou, Kusnetz, Rolle. Instant working level meters and personal alpha dosimeters are explained in terms of calibration, maintenance, readout and estimation of accuracy. A lecture outlining dose estimation by means of bio-assay, whole-body counting and the use of TLD's concludes the topic. Record-Keeping An overview of the problems of changing limits,

The impact of surface coal mining on the geologic materials and ground water in different geologic settings is being investigated by the Illinois State. Geological Survey at three abandoned surface mines in Illinois. At a site near Ottawa in La Salle County, the overburden prior to mining consisted largely of pyritic shale; sand was the major component of the overburden and spoil at a mine near Coal City, Grundy County. Clays, lacustrine silts, and some shale and limestone were the dominant premining overburden materials at a mine near Harrisburg, in Saline County. Ground-water elevations at Coal City and Harrisburg are approximately at premining levels, whereas at Ottawa they are near the base of the spoil. Ground-water quality has deteriorated at all three sites, especially at Ottawa and Harrisburg.

Introduction Horizontal drilling in coal mines is a relatively new technology. The earliest recorded drilling in the United States was done in 1958 at the Humphrey mine of Consolidation Coal Co. for degasification of coal seams. Spindler and Poundstone experimented with vertical and horizontal holes for several years. They concluded in 1960 that horizontal drilling in advance of underground mining appeared to offer the most promising prospect (for degasification) but effective and extensive application would be dependent upon the ability to drill long holes, possibly 300 to 600 m, with reasonably precise directional control and within practical cost limits (Spindler and Poundstone, 1960). Mining Research Division of Conoco Inc., the parent company of Consolidation Coal Co., began a research program in the early 1970s to achieve the above objective. The technology needed to drill nearly 300 m in advance of working faces was developed by 1975 and experiments on advance degasification with such deep holes began in 1976. Preliminary results of this research have already been published (Thakur and Davis, 1977). To date nearly 4.5 km of horizontal holes have been drilled for advance degasification and earlier results were reconfirmed. In summary, these are: • The greatest impact of these boreholes was felt in the face area where methane concentrations were reduced to nearly 0.3% in course of two to three months from original values of nearly 0.95%. • The methane concentration in the section return reduced to 50% of its original value immediately after the boreholes were completed, indicating a capture ratio of 50%. • The total methane emission in the section (rib and face emission plus the borehole production) did not increase but rather gradually declined with time. • Initial production from 300 m deep boreholes in the Pittsburgh seam varied from 3 m3/min to 6 m3/min but then slowly declined as workings advanced inby of the drill site (well head) exposing a larger surface area parallel to the borehole. Encouraged by these results, it was decided to design a horizontal drilling system that would be mobile and compatible with other face equipment. A mobile horizontal drill can be divided into three subsystems: the drill rig, the drill bit guidance system, and borehole surveying instruments. The drill rig provides the thrust and torque necessary to drill 75- to 100-mm diam holes up to 600 m deep and contains the mud circulation and gas cuttings separation systems. The drill bit guidance system guides the bit up, down, left, or right as desired. Borehole surveying instruments measure the pitch, roll, and azimuth of the borehole assembly. Additionally, it also indicates the thickness of coal between the borehole and the roof or floor of the coal seam. Thus, it becomes a powerful tool for locating the presence of faults, clay veins, sand channels, and the thickness of coal seam in advance of mining. In recent years, many other potential uses of horizontal boreholes have come to light, such as in situ gasification, longwall blasting, improved auger mining, and oil and gas production from shallow deposits. The purpose of this paper is to describe the hardware and procedure for drilling deep horizontal holes. The Drilling Rig [Figures 1 and 2] show the two components of the mobile drilling rig: the drill unit and the auxiliary unit. The equipment (except for the chassis) was designed by Conoco Inc. and fabricated by J. H. Fletcher and Co. of Huntington, WV. The drill unit. It is mounted on a four-wheel drive chassis driven by two Staffa hydraulic motors with chains. The tires are 369 X 457 mm in size and provide a ground clearance of 305 mm. The prime mover is a 30-kw explosion-proof electric motor which is used only for tramming. Once the unit is Crammed to the drill site, electric power is disconnected and hydraulic power from the auxiliary unit is turned on. Four floor jacks are used to level the machine and raise the drill head to the desired level. Two 5-t telescopic hydraulic props, one on each side, anchor the drill unit to the roof. The drill unit houses the feed carriage, the drilling console, 300 m of 3-m-long NQ, drill rods, and the electric cable reel for instruments. The feed carriage is mounted more or less centrally, has a feed of 3.3 m, and can swing laterally by ± 17°. It can also sump forward by 1.2 m. The drill head has a "through" chuck such that drill pipes can be fed from the side or back end. General specifications of the feed carriage are: [ ] The auxiliary unit. The chassis for the auxiliary unit is identical to the drill unit but the prime movers are two 30-kW explosion proof electric motors. It is equipped with a methane detector- activated switch so that power will be cut off at a preset methane concentration in the air. No anchoring props are needed for this unit. The auxiliary unit houses the hydraulic power pack, the water (mud) circulating pump, control boxes for electric motors, a trailing cable spool, and a steel tank which serves for water storage and closed-loop separation of drill cuttings and gas.

A family of modified-sulfur cements has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for the preparation of construction materials with improved properties. Various types of sulfur cements were prepared by reacting sulfur with mixtures of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) and oligomers of cyclopentadiene (CPD). Durable cements were prepared with structural characteristics ranging from rigid to flexible. These cements were used to prepare corrosion-resistant materials for use in a wide variety of industrial applications where resistance to acidic and salt conditions is needed. These materials were prepared as rigid concretes, flexible pavings, spray coatings, and grouts. Production of modified-sulfur cements in a commercial-size plant was demonstrated.

This report describes the use of the sprayfan auxiliary ventilation system for methane and dust control on continuous miner sections to potential users. The sprayfan auxiliary ventilation system is a modified water spray system which directs intake air to and across the front of a continuous miner to prevent build up of methane gas and dust concentrations. This user's manual contains practical information concerning sprayfan: a. Description and capabilities b. Design c. Installation d. Operation e. Maintenance. Underground tests, independent laboratory tests, tests by MSHA, and independent installations by coal producers have confirmed the performance of the sprayfan system. There are currently 150 sprayfan systems in operation in underground coal mines.

The wetting of coal dust by aqueous solutions of surface active agents (surfactants) has been studied. Selected for study were thirty coals and typical surfactants selected from the typical classes of anionic, non ionic and cationics. Of these three classes the practical use of cationics in aqueous solutions has been eliminated due to the inherent negative Zeta potential charge of the representative coals studied. The wetting of the coals has been examined by column flow, contact angle, and settling rate measurements. Results indicated that both anionic and nonionic surfactants are to be considered viable for use; low critical micelle concentration values are also preferred for the surfactants. Study of native waters showed substantial variation in properties, i.e., pH, calcium ion concentration, and conductance. pH variations were also noted to affect the effectiveness of selected surfactants. Combinations of nonionic and anionic surfactants have, in certain instances, produced synergistic enhancement in the coal wetting superior to the effectiveness of each surfactant alone.

The rational and optimal determination of the design of a mining exploitation is a very intricate and difficult problem : the parameters are numerous, some technical, some economic or technico-economic which cannot be fully controlled; beside, deposits are estimated from very limited information and the choice criteria are not always quantitative, the economic context has to be anticipated by several years, and even the technological limits can change tomorrow. So, although very clever and performing numerical algorithms have been developed in recent years for open-pit design, we consider that this problem has not really been solved satisfactorily until now. The reasons are that people have concentrated their efforts on informatical algorithmical problems, and have assumed that the technical and economical data are well defined at the time of the study, which is generally not true. In particular, the mere fact of assigning dollar- values to blocks in order to maximize the total cash-flow is generally unrealistic because of the uncertainty of the data used. Consequently, the significance of the unique pit obtained as a result of these algorithms is questionable.

A comparison of analytical models used to describe deposition in the first generation of lung bifurcations is presented. In order to allow testing of the mathematical models, experimental data were obtained from radon daughter deposition in simplified lung bifurcations. The experimental data for particles deposited by diffusional mechanisms is best described by the assumption of a thin concentration boundary layer at the entrance of a right circular tube. Other more complex models do not accurately describe the deposition of submicron particles. The angle of bifurcation was found to have a minor effect on deposition.

The demand placed on the mining industry in the past 15 years for increased production, coupled with lower grade ore and higher cost capital, has resulted in a noticeable increase in grinding mill sizes. The pressure to increase mill size continues. During the mid sixty's and early seventy's, ?larger? conventional ball mills were in the range of 13 - 16-1/2 f t. diameter (4 - 5 m) increasing by the mid 70's to 18 ft. (5.5 m) diameter. At the same time, autogenous mills expanded from 24 - 32 ft. (7.3 - 9.1 m) to the present 34 and 36 ft. (10.b and 11.0 m) diameters. These size pioneers of 16-1/2, 18, and 36 ft. diameter mills from Allis-Chalmers have been free from structural problems, because they were analyzed, modeled, designed, and field tested to meet the challenge.

Since the early 1970's, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has carried out exploration geophysical research on non-basemetal strategic mineral commodities, including uranium, lithium, gold, potash, and chromite. The chromite study (largely completed) and the potash study (still going on) carried out during the past 4 years have not been aimed at the discovery of new ore reserves, but instead were designed to complement exploration by private mining companies. The USGS has carried out research not normally conducted by these companies, but which can be used by them in their efforts to increase production of strategic minerals. Results of the chromite and potash studies highlight the importance of: 1) a laboratory-research phase (petrophysical and petrographic studies) at the beginning of work on any new commodity; 2) an operative or functional ore-deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework, and the necessity to continually test, refine, and modify it during the study; 3) indirect geologic/geochemical indicators, secondary associations, and the use of multiple physical properties; and 4) the use of a systematic inverse-cost sequential-exploration (i.e. lowest resolution and lowest cost first) strategy to keen the exploration economically reasonable. The keystone to the success of the study is frequent and substantive dialogue among geologists, geophysicists, and geochemists.

The Trail Lake RARE II area comprises 1,300 acres (526 ha) in Lassen and Plumas Counties, California, adjacent to the Caribou wilderness. No mining claims, prospects, or quarries are reported within the study areas, and no evidence of potential mineral deposits was found during a field reconnaissance. Quaternary basaltic lava flows uniformly underlie the area. INTRODUCTION The Trail Lake (No. B5-095) RARE II further planning area occupies 1,300 acres (526 ha) adjacent to the Caribou Wilderness in Lassen and Plumas Counties, California. Susanville is about 30 mi (50 km) east and Chester is about 17 mi (27 km) south of the study area. Access from State Highways 44 and 36 is provided by well-maintained gravel roads.

INTRODUCTION-SYSTEM DESIGN The design of an underground mining operation requires the integration of transportation, ventilation, ground control, and mining methods to form a system which provides the highest possible degree of safety for mine personnel; the lowest cost per ton of product; the most suitable quality of final product, considering its intended use; the maximum percent recovery of the reserve, consistent with cost and subsidence rights ; and the minimum disturbance to the environment. The selection of mining method is generally the controlling factor in overall mine design. Some important considerations in the choice of mining method are : 1) Depth of cover over the coal seam. 2) Strength and thickness of rock strata in the overburden. 3) Characteristics of the coal seam, including thickness, nature and location of impurities or irregularities, dip (or pitch), nature and direction of cleavage, hardness, and structural strength of the coal. 4) Nature and strength of the immediate roof (top) over the coal seam. 5) Nature and strength of the floor (bottom) under the coal seam. 6) Presence and amount of explosive gas (methane). 7) Quantity of water likely to be encountered in the mining operation. 8) Any previous or concurrent mining in seams above or below the coal seam to be worked. 9) Any restrictions on recovery required for subsidence control. Topographical and geological reports and maps of the area are usually available from state and federal geological surveys, and contain excellent general information to guide more detailed investigations. Exploratory drilling, and the plotting and analysis of the information thus obtained, are essential steps in any development program, and aid in the correlation and evaluation of information gained by other means. Dr. Emrick, honored guests, distinguished speakers, ladies and gentlemen, I am Langan Swent, Vice President for Environmental Affairs and Occupational Safety and Health, of Homestake Mining Company. Today, I appear on behalf of the American Mining Congress, as chairman of its uranium mine health subcommittee. The American Mining Congress is a trade association of several hundred members, which include the producers of a large proportion of the nation's uranium. I've been asked to make a statement of principles for the uranium industry. There are two types of principles that apply to industry in general, and specifically to the uranium industry. Some have external origins and apply regardless of what industry does or thinks. Others are generated by industry itself and serve as goals for the industry. I'll discuss some of each type. I'll limit my statement to those principles related to the subject of this conference--radiation hazards in mining. I won't take your time trying to explain some of the unrelated principles that we must all contend with, such as Parkinson's Laws, Murphy's Law, and the Peter Principle. First and foremost, industry has a sincere interest in the well-being and health of its employees. There are two basic reasons for this. One is a basic respect for human lives, especially those of people we see and work with every day. No one in management wants to carry the lifelong burden of blame for a life lost due to poor working conditions. Most uranium and other mining is done in small communities. Production workers, maintenance workers, service workers, shift bosses, foremen, superintendents and managers all live in the same community. They attend the same churches. They serve together in civic activities. Their children go to the same schools. If one employee in such a community loses his life due to poor working conditions, those remaining know in a daily and intimate way the resulting personal tragedy, usually of a bereaved widow and fatherless children. This sad experience makes the community, including industry management, intensely sensitive to the need for maintaining good working conditions in the mines. But what about the segment of industry that does not live in the mining communities? Corporate and owner's offices are frequently hundreds of miles from the communities where the mining takes place. Many of these people are not personally acquainted with the workers, and there are few close personal ties between the two communities. The distant staff are, however, still human beings and motivated by the same basic human respect for life. Mr. Manuel Gomez of MSHA and a member of the planning committee for this conference summed this point up expressively when he told me: "No one group has a corner on compassion." In addition to compassion, there is another factor. In both communities the basic assignment to everyone is to produce profits. In carrying out this assignment, supervisory and management people are acutely aware of the high cost of illnesses and accidents. Their objective of maximizing profits is advanced significantly by minimizing illnesses and accidents at the mines. A business that has illnesses and accidents generally suffers from poor employee morale and high employee turnover, both of which detract from profits. Next, I would like to talk about what industry has done in the field that is the subject of this conference. We have worked at all sorts of methods to reduce exposure of employees since the exposure standards were first introduced and then lowered. Other speakers will go into details of technology, and I'll simply comment on exposure results. These are best shown in Table 1. The table shows the average WL to which miners in U.S. underground uranium mines have been exposed since 1937 through 1980. The trend of decreasing radon daughter concentrations throughout the period is obvious. Figure 1 presents this data graphically and shows the trend at a glance. This record begins in 1937 when uranium, as such, really wasn't being mined or sought. The concentrations given by the U.S. Public Health Service were for a few small vanadium mines which carried uranium as a by-product. A few years later, when the Manhattan project to develop the atomic bomb was begun, these mines became the first U.S. uranium mines and the vanadium became the by-product! The radiation hazard then also received attention and the average concentrations began to decline. As knowledge of the reality of the hazard spread, conditions improved. The search for uranium in the U.S. turned up new and larger ore bodies that had to be mined by large underground mines. These mines involved ventilation planning from the beginning, and when they came into production in the late 1950's they lowered the average concentrations greatly. Then in 1960 the American Standards Association adopted a standard setting 1 working level as a satisfactory condition, and several action levels up to 10WL, at which point removal of people from exposure was called for. As a result of the uranium producing states governors' conference in December 1960, state mine inspection agencies, in the early 1960's, began to adopt and enforce the ASA standards. As a result, average concentrations again declined. In 1967, the Federal Radiation Council recommended an annual limitation of 12 WLM per individual. This study is devoted to the improvement of the decision-making process in occupational protection of uranium miners in France. Its purpose is to apply the principles which are recommended by the I.C.R.P. in the field of radiation hazards. These principles, which have introduced the notion of "optimization" in standard setting, suggest the importance of applying cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis to this sector. The objectives here are twofold : to evaluate the present organization of radiation protection on the basis of a simulation model of polluted air flow in the mine (due to the decay of a radioactive gas, radon) and to develop cost-effectiveness analysis of the various radiation protection policies.

INTRODUCTION The Henderson mine utilizes a highly mechanized, continuous, panel-caving, mining system to extract ore from a deep, massive, molybdenite deposit. The mine is located 80.5 km (50 miles) west of Denver, Colorado. The mine surface facilities are located 3,170 m (10,400 feet) above sea level in a steep valley on the eastern side of the Continental Divide. Milling facilities are 24 km (15 miles) west on the western side of the divide at an elevation of 2,804 m (9,200 feet) above sea level. The ore- body is located approximately 3,000 feet south of the valley under Red Mountain. Access to the ore for men and materials is through a 915 m (3,000-foot) deep, 8.5 m (28-foot) diameter, vertical, concrete-lined, service shaft. Access from the mill is through a 15.5 km (9.6-mile) rail haulage tunnel. The mine is ventilated through an additional intake shaft and two exhaust shafts. Mine production at this time is 27,255 mtpd (30,000 stpd). The mine ventilation system supplies 1,038 cubic meters per second (2.2 million cfm) through approximately 60 miles of drifting or 2.7 tons of air per ton of ore mined. There are 130 fans in the mine in fixed locations and in vent lines with 6,900 connected horsepower in the mine. MINING METHOD AND LAYOUT The orebody is divided vertically into two major zones. The upper zone is the 8100-level production area. The bottom zone is the 7700- level production area which is in the early development stage. The rail haulage level at 7500 feet is common to both production zones. Each mine production zone consists of five associated sublevels. The cave undercut level is 16.8 m (55 feet) above the production level. Two boundary cutoff levels are located 44.2 m (145 feet) and 62.5 m (205 feet) respectively above the production level. The fresh-air level is positioned 15.2 m (50 feet) below the production level, and the exhaust vent level is 19.8 m (65 feet) below the production level. Horizontally, each production zone is divided into three panels each, 224 m (800 feet) wide. These panels are caved from south to north. As the caving in one panel nears completion, caving in the adjacent panel is initiated. Development for the caving panels is continuous so that the sublevels above the production level and the production level itself have a combination of development drifting and production-related activities. UNDERGROUND VENTILATION NETWORK The ventilation system is zoned in the same manner as the orebody itself. One major split of 600 cubic meters per second (1,270,000 cfm) ventilates the 8100-level production zone; one split of 100 cubic meters per second (210,000 cfm) ventilates the development of the 7700- level production zone; and one split of 165 cubic meters per second (350,000 cfm) ventilates the 7500 rail haulage level. The haulage tunnel requires an additional 188 cubic meters per second (400,000 cfm) of air. Development-drift ventilation is accomplished by hanging 1.0 m (3.5-foot) diameter steel ducting in the drifts with 40-horsepower, 0.96 m (38-inch) diameter fans supplying 9.4 cubic meters per second (20.000 cfm). The normal maximum length for these systems is 300 m (1,000 feet). The 8100-level production-area ventilation system is especially suited to a high level of mucking activity confined in a small area. Approximately 93 per cent of the mine's total production is transferred from the drawpoints to ore passes in 10 production drifts. The active area in each drift is 300 m (1,000 feet). Twelve 5-cubic-yard LHD units with Cat turbo- charged 170-horsepower engines are assigned to the area. Under these conditions, more than one LHD is assigned to a particular production drift. Adequate ventilation is maintained by making an air change every 97 m (320 feet) along the production drifts. Fresh air is brought into the production drifts from the fresh-air level through 1.37 m (4.5-foot) diameter raises. Air travels south along the production drift to the ore pass where it is exhausted down the ore pass to the exhaust level. The ore pass is followed by another intake which is followed by an ore-pass exhaust. At the south end of the production area, a series of exhaust fans maintain a southerly air- flow through the production level.

Future mineral processing developments will be of two types. There will be a continuation of the advances of the last 20 years including major increases in equipment capacities, the development of reliable on-line instrumenta- tion, the use of digital computers for automatic control, and the greatly expanded use of in-situ leaching techniques. However, there will also be a need for innovations as the industry faces a different set of problems to those involved in cost and extraction efficiency considerations. These new problems include those relating to energy usage, environmental pressures, and the further development of large low grade deposits and small, high grade metallurgic- ally complex deposits. Present technology does not appear adequate to solve many of these new demands. New treat- ment concepts will be required, and the immediate outlook in this regard is not encouraging. A major research and development task in mineral processing over the next 20 years will be to seek out new ideas and develop them, and this must be pursued with imagination and determination. Both the continuation of the present research pro- grammes and the development of new methods will require a steady supply of highly qualified technical personnel. These people are not being produced in the numbers required, and this situation must be urgently rectified.

Veins in the Pyramid district of northwestern Nevada occur along steep fractures in Oligocene and Miocene quartz latite tuffs. The vein mineralization is zoned from a central enargite-pyrite zone outward through a complex polymetallic pyrite-tetrahedrite-sphalerite-galena-chalcopyrite-bornite-chalcocite zone, and finally to an outer zone of pyrite and galena. Wall rock alteration includes advanced argillic and sericitic envelopes along veins superimposed on district-wide propylitization. The ore distribution and alteration patterns were probably produced by an increase in pH, a decrease in sulfur fugacity, along with cooling of the migrating hydrothermal fluid.

The Colorado Department of Highways awarded a contract to construct the Second Bore of the Eisenhower Tunnel in August, 1975. The contract was completed June 29, 1979, nine days ahead of schedule, with¬out major claims or delays. The tunneling involved complex construction through difficult ground conditions. The contract, plans and specifications were specifically planned to more equitably share the risks involved and to minimize adversary relationships. The Department produced a detailed tunnel design and maintained responsibility for the design. The contract employed some new provisions; e.g., a review board for settlement of claims and disputes; escrow documents (contractor's bid documents) to determine the contractor's basis of bid when determining adjustments. The tunnel contract, plans and administrative efforts employed by the owner and contractor were very successful in this project.
