The main, though rarely mentioned advantage, is likely to be the standardisation of best practice and product. In a batch process conditions vary cyclically, but with a continuous process they would, at least ideally, remain the same for long periods of time. The other main advantages of continuous over batch processes are likely to be reduced operating and capital costs, the improved possibilities for automatic control, and more consistent product quality. Recent developments are surveyed for ironmaking and steelmaking with reference to blast furnaces; solid-product and molten-product direct reduction; the trough-type processes of Thring, Worner, the Japanese National Research Institute for Metals and Glinkov; basic-oxygen furnace (LD) variants; spray steelmaking; continuous casting and vacuum degassing; rolling; and coating. Encouragement in the devleopment of continuous processes may be drawn from the way unexpected difficulties, such as trouble with sulphur and refractories, were tackled and overcome to achieve the float glass process

The conditions of amine concentration and pH necessary for the concentration of fine haematite particles at the iso-octane-water interface have been determined. Results obtained from the related studies on the effect of pH and dodecylamine concentration on the adsorption density, electrokinetic potential, contact angle and concentration of various amine species in the system are included. A good correlation was obtained between these different variables. Mineral production in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland during the last ten years has been confined to the sporadic production of industrial minerals—for example marble, anorthosite, limestone, talc and silica. From 1962 onwards there has been an upsurge in mineral exploration in the Highlands, increasing in tempo from 1966 onwards due to the efforts of the Institute of Geological Sciences, the Highlands and Islands Development Board, and private and public companies. Geological, chemical and economic aspects of some of the more interesting mineral prospects are discussed: these include anorthosite, feldspar, magnetite, quartzite and brucite marble. Reference is made to a geochemical survey undertaken in the Rosehall district of Sutherland, the results obtained being summarised. Problems that affect the future of mineral exploration in the Highlands are stated.

The work has shown that packed-bed behaviour can be predicted from the results of single-particle experiments, total reaction times being predicted somewhat more accurately than gas and solid temperatures and gas compositions. A small laboratory packed-bed reactor was built and used to study the decomposition of beds of specially prepared CaCO3 spheres, steps being taken to minimise the effects exerted by the walls of the bed on processes occurring within the bed. Gas and solid temperatures and gas compositions were measured at various points in the bed and compared with theoretical predictions based on kinetic data determined in previous single-particle experiments. The measured solid temperatures and total reaction times agreed remarkably well with the values predicted theoretically. Gas and solid temperatures measured after the reaction had finished at any point in the bed did not agree with the theory. This was because solid temperatures in the bed rose very rapidly once the reaction was completed and the walls of the bed could not be heated at a sufficient rate for their temperatures to rise as rapidly; thus some loss of heat from the bed to the walls was inevitable, and this could not be accounted for in the theory. In addition, the theory did not allow for the conduction of heat within the bed, and this resulted in some further slight discrepancy between the measured and predicted values, particularly after the reaction was completed. Gas compositions measured in the bed were rather scattered, but, even so, they agreed moderately well with the predictions of the theory.

Two graphical techniques which are commonly used to assess batch separations are analysed in terms of reaction kinetics to provide a more powerful method of evaluation. An alternative and more general approach, based on the selection and application of suitable efficiency criteria, is also presented. The method proposed distinguishes between selection and collection efficiency in flotation and can be used to estimate the degree of liberation in the feed. Selective flocculation was investigated as a possible method of recovering values from mineral slimes which are too finely divided to be treated by conventional mineral processing methods. It has proved possible to flocculate selectively either haematite or a silicate from a stably dispersed mixture by varying the anionic character of the high-molecular-weight, partially hydrolysed polyacrylamide employed. Different separation methods have been developed for hard and soft water media. Electrokinetic and infrared techniques have been employed to elucidate the mechanism whereby selectivity has been attained in the different cases. The following influences on the various selective flocculation parameters have been investigated: (a) the level of the different reagent additions and (b) the shear conditions during and after flocculant addition. A feature of the particular system studied was the high solids content at which it was possible to achieve good selectivity. Probable reasons for this are advanced, and the possibilities and potentialities of the process are discussed.

The kinetics of the copper segregation process has been investigated. The experimental strategy used to isolate the rate-controlling reaction step is described. This step was found to be the chloridisation of the oxide copper minerals in the ore. The link between the rate of chloridisation and the overall rate of segregation is demonstrated experimentally. The influence on the kinetics of the various parameters in a TORCO system is examined and the implications are discussed

Measurements have been made of the activity of 'FeO' in 'Fe0'-Mn0-Ti02 melts at 1475 degrees C. The results obtained are discussed in terms of ideal mixing of titanates and in terms of a regular solution model. On the basis of the regular solution model activities of Ti02 and MnO in the Fe0-Mn0-Ti02 and Mn0-Ti02 systems have been derived. The data have been shown to be consistent with the liquidus lines in the phase systems. Examples are given of the application of the data to slag-metal equilibria, being used to derive slag-metal data between liquid iron and Fe0-Mn0-Ti02 slags

The low concentration of diamond in workable deposits requires very large samples for grade estimation, and results, even then, may be erratic and difficult to interpret. Although the Poisson probability distribution cannot accurately describe the occurrence of diamond, it is suggested that it gives a better estimate of grade than conventional methods, even from single samples. Examples illustrate the simple calculation required.

Since the various new techniques of automation and computing have enabled vast numbers of mineralogical observations of relatively small samples to be made cheaply and rapidly, the statistical assessment of these measurements has become of vital importance. Much of the theory and most of the procedures of sampling that are used in the mineral industry are based on Gaussian statistics, but modern measuring techniques show that many mineralogical parameters do not necessarily follow the Gaussian distribution function. Consequently, it has become necessary to examine the application of other, more suitable statistical methods in order to derive the maximum amount of useful information from the examination of mineralogical samples. Some of the errors that can be introduced by the use of incorrect distribution functions are discussed and the value of determining the function that is appropriate to the particular parameter that is being measured is shown. Examples are provided of non-Gaussian distribution functions in mineralogical materials that were encountered during prospecting and during mineral treatment operations: a Canadian uranium ore, a Thai tin ore, and gold ore tailings.

The leaching, with hydrochloric, sulphuric and perchloric acids, of suspensions and massive specimens of different haematite and goethite samples has been studied. Stream-sediment sampling undertaken to define the regional geochemistry of northern Scotland is described with particular reference to the errors involved. The region is underlain essentially by Moine schists, Caledonian granites and Old Red Sandstone sediments, which are generally characterized by low geochemical relief. Factors in the secondary environment obscure the relationship between trace-metal concentrations in stream sediments and bedrock geology. Investigation of sampling and sample preparation methods indicates that the -100-mesh material is the optimum size fraction for the regional survey of this area: it provides adequate geochemical contrast: it reduced the incidence of spurious high values in the samples investigated and it is available in amounts which are adequate for all the analyses required. Grinding samples improves precision and reduces the preferential volatilisation of metals coprecipitated with hydrous manganese and iron oxides for the optical emission spectroscopic method used initially. A study of the dispersion of metals in the drainage system of an area of Pb-Ba-Mo mineralisation and an area of U-Pb mineralisation, respectively, indicates that a sampling interval of 1 per 2 km2 based on second- or third-order streams is adequate to define anomalous metal concentrations. Regional variation can also be represented on the same interval. Modifications to the sampling procedure to reduce the effects of the secondary environment are complicated by the primary association of Mn and Fe with mineralisation in the area. The ratio of analytical and sampling error to regional variance shows that procedural precision is adequate to prepare regional geochemical maps of northern Scotland, with the exception of Cr, Cu at low concentrations and Pb.
